Doing Membership Right! By Byron Todd, AFC President

he heart and soul of any organization is its membership and that is true for this Association. We strive because of the great people that have made AFC what it was in the past, what it is today, and what it will be in the future. We are only as strong as our weakest chapter in this Association. We are on a mission, and that mission is to reach the magical number of 10,000 members. We have a plan to reach this goal and it was displayed during the Membership Development Conference. The Membership Development Conference provided leaders that attended with recipes from the AFC Membership Cookbook, allowing each of the chapters to increase its membership. Recipes for success are a part of this cookbook. I can truly say that this was one of the best Membership Workshops that I have attended in my 18 years in the Association. Ask someone who attended the conference what you missed and what recipes you can use to make the membership at your chapter a meal that everyone can enjoy. I want to thank the members of the Membership Development Committee for their hard work 3 I CURRENT August 2013

and congratulate them for a great time in Cape Coral. Special thanks go out to Edison State College for the support they gave the conference. The faces of the Association are changing. Many of the leaders who were here when I first joined AFC are retiring. With this retirement is a wealth of knowledge about the Florida College System and the Association that will be leaving us. We will miss them and wish them well as they start a new chapter in their lives. We want them to know that there is still a need for them to help the Association. Professional development continues to be a major focus of the Association. We want to provide our entire membership the type of training that they can use on their campus. As I have traveled around the state this year, we made it a point to display great training at each of the events. We want to showcase the best practices at each of our campuses. Sharing what we do with each other helps improve the quality of service on our campuses. As the members of our Association get better, the Association also gets better. We

were once thought of as a party organization and that image has gone away and we plan to keep it away. We still face budget cuts at our schools and a declining enrollment but the mission to support an education for our students does not change. The past legislative session brought about changes that are very challenging for us. We do not think that the climate will change anytime in the future. To combat this, we need to increase our membership to show that we are an important organization. I encourage you to get out and tell the story of what AFC means to you and what the benefits are for our members. We are looking forward to the fall convention. Remember it has been moved from SanDestin to the Caribe Royale in Orlando. Go ahead and get registered to attend. If you are one of the first 50, you will have an opportunity to win a special prize. Let’s get ready to have a great experience in Orlando; and the best is yet to come for the AFC.

Membership Is About Your Desire Reaching our 10,000 member goal is about your Will. By Michael Brawer, AFC Executive Director/CEO

013 AFC President Byron Todd set the tone for his year early on. He wanted to continue Past-President Gary Sligh’s goal of reaching 10,000 members. From his experience as a longtime AFC member, officer, and overall involved guy in association business, he knows that choosing membership is a very personal decision. It is a choice governed by one’s desire. Each person has to find something in the organization that is for him or her. Thus, he conceived his theme for the year that I have found to be most appropriate, “What is your desire? We’ve got it.” This builds on the idea that in the AFC, there is something for everyone. During our recent 2013 Membership Development Conference a core group of very active AFC members cooked up a very real smorgasbord of the potential desires one may have for joining this association. As I moved about the room while various AFC chapter leaders were designing their own member recruitment plans and strategies, I heard that some very vivid desires were being satisfied. “I like the meetings.” “I really enjoy having friends all over the state.” “It gives me chance to travel.” “I get a nice break from my daily routine when I do AFC stuff.” “The connections have helped me do my job better.” “It’s so great to be able to learn from everyone.” “It’s just fun.” “It’s worth it just to be able to go to the convention.” “I get all sorts of information about what’s going on in Tallahassee.” A variety of desires is indeed being satisfied through the AFC and they are very personal. In this business, for a state-level Association, 10,000 members is the Holy Grail. At that level of membership you command respect, you get 5 I CURRENT June 2013

noticed, you get the big dog treatment among your peers. Most significantly is that you gain political clout. “Hello Senator. I am the CEO of the Association of Florida Colleges and I am here today to speak with you about some issues that affect our 28 colleges and more than 10,000 members.” Some associations can never get there because they lack the potential market. I used to work as CEO for the Florida Psychological Association. We had 2,000 members when I left them at the end of 2003, up from 1,500 in 2001. At the time, there were a little over 4,000 licensed psychologists in the state that were eligible for membership. We had a good market penetration at close to 50%, but we would never reach the Holy Grail. That’s not the case for us among the Florida colleges. We have the 10,000 member market potential with close to 25,000 full-time college employees in the system. Add in part-timers and adjuncts and we are closer to a 40,000 market potential. Moreover, every one of them is eligible to join. Yet, we have been hovering about 8,000 members for a couple years now after a strong period of growth in 2010-11. My staff is doing all it can to get the word out. I am asking for you to dig down deep into your will and help us get there. All we need is 2,000 currently active members to will us one new member each, to share what you desired, and bring someone new into the fold. Sounds simple, no? So step back and think for minute who that one person could be, walk up to her or him for a chat or sit down for a cup of coffee and ask, “What is your desire?” because guess what? We got it! FC celebrated its own form of Top Chef during its annual Membership Development Conference last month in Cape Coral. With “Top Chef ~Doing Membership Right” as its theme, the conference kicked off with opening ceremonies and greetings from Edison State College President, Dr. Jeff Allbritten. Dr. Allbritten reflected on the importance of the AFC to the Florida College System and the advocacy efforts that assist in telling the stories of each institution. He encouraged everyone to step up their efforts to increase membership and reminded them that dues assist in the system’s advocacy efforts impacting retirement, continuing contracts, and budgets. The AFC Membership Development Committee led by Stephanie Campbell provided conference attendees with strategies for overcoming objections and obstacles, the role of commissions, and strategies for sustaining and increasing membership at the chapter, region, and commission level. The Committee also held a recipe exchange to share best membership practices. fs a new member of AFC Region IV, I attended the July Membership Development conference in Cape Coral. I had only one goal; to obtain ideas to generate new memberships and interest in our revitalized Edison State College chapter. Instead, I received so much more. Fantastic ideas for member activities and fundraising events, making new friends and getting to know my colleagues better, being able to assist a peer at another AFC chapter with technical expertise needed, and, of course, ideas to help our chapter formulate a plan to grow our membership and strengthen AFC. The venue was beautiful… the atmosphere energetic…and creativity plentiful. A big thank you to the committee who committed so much time and effort in putting this conference together. Well done everyone!

Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida The Service Project Committee selected the Early Coalition of Southwest Florida as our service project for the 2013 Membership Conference. Susan Block, Chief Executive Office of the ELC, and her staff, were in need of new picture books appropriate for children from birth through age 5, which they distribute them to families in need that attend the center. The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida serves the families of Collier, Glades Hendry and Lee Counties. Their goal is to make certain that children ages birth to five and beyond, have access to high quality early education experiences to cultivate their natural enthusiasm for learning.

CHAPTER HEADLINES college of central florida April showcased a Krispy Kreme fundraiser which provided financial support for the March of Dimes. Michael Brawer, Executive Director/CEO of AFC, was the guest speaker of our April general AFC meeting and provided great information from the state level. May was filled with activities. On May 16, a Retirees and Associates dinner was sponsored by the CF Chapter. Susan Dagg and Suzette Wallace represented AFC at the dinner and encouraged CF retirees to participate in upcoming events. CF Retirees’ President and Steering Committee approved giving $150 to CF’s AFC Endowed Scholarship Fund.

State Representative Jimmie T. Smith was guest speaker of the May general AFC meeting hosted on the Citrus Campus. He provided information pertinent to State Colleges. Twelve CF Chapter members attended the Student Development Conference. June featured CF President Henningsen presiding over the installation of our AFC Executive Board during the June general AFC meeting. CF Chapter Membership Co-Chairs Henri Benlolo and Carol Smith spearheaded this year’s membership drive with a “Call ‘Em” activity. A list of potential members was obtained from Human Resources and initial calls resulted in Carol Smith and Henri Benlolo, eight new members. Florida gateway COLLEGE Florida Gateway College’s chapter of AFC recently began its Professional Development Series. Our first event featured a special presentation on BodyViz, a 3D anatomy system that allows the users to “travel” under the skin, past bones, through arteries, blood vessels and organs and literally fly through patients’ bodies to get a better view of human anatomy. FGC is excited to have this incredible piece of innovative technology as a teaching tool for students. In May, Carl Romano, Coordinator of Occupational Programs, invited AFC members for a tour of the Welding lab and gave us an update on the exciting new changes that have taken effect. AFC members were given an interactive demonstration of the college’s new Virtual Reality Welder. The VRW is a machine that offers a 3-D simulation allowing students

to safely and efficiently improve welding skills before proceeding to the shop to perform the tasks. The Florida Gateway College AFC chapter has been working hard this year, hosting fundraisers to benefit charities as well as our own scholarship fund. In March, AFC raised $158 to benefit the March of Dimes. In April, AFC participated in the Annual Relay for Life and was able to raise $2,600 to help fight cancer. During the commencement ceremonies on May 3, 2013, AFC sold rose bouquets raising approximately $500. FGC AFC is excited to announce that we are less than $300 from having our scholarship endowed. Additional fundraisers are planned for the month of August and all proceeds will be used to cover the remaining balance needed for our scholarship fund.

COMMISSION HEADLINES Student development commission The Student Development Commission (SDC) is off to a great start in 2013! Our 16-member Executive Board, representing 11 colleges in the Florida College System, and an 8-member PHCC Conference Planning Team worked together to host the “wildly successful” 46th SDC Annual Spring Conference at Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey, May 14-16. The conference theme was “Developing Tomorrow’s Possibilities… Today” and Dr. Katherine Johnson, President of Pasco-Hernando Community College was our Keynote Speaker. KUDOS CONGRATS Mullowney Elected NACUA Board Chair Valencia College Vice President for Policy and General Counsel William J. (Bill) Mullowney has been elected chair of the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), which is considered the primary source of higher-education law programming and information for its members and the higher-education community. He was named chair at NACUA’s annual conference held in June in Philadelphia. The association serves more than 4,000 attorneys representing 800 higher education institutions on over 1,800 campuses throughout the U.S. and in 12 other countries. Bill Mullowney A member of NACUA since 1985, this is Mullowney’s third term of service on the NACUA Board, serving in the past from 2001-2005, and again on its Executive Committee as secretary from 20072010. “NACUA has emerged as a reliable and essential legal resource for higher education attorneys, other higher education associations, and key governmental agencies,” Mullowney said. “I am proud and honored to serve my colleagues in support of NACUA’s

mission to advance the effective practice of higher education attorneys for the benefit of the colleges and universities they serve.” Other elected officers include Chair-Elect Tom Cline, Vice President And General Counsel at Northwestern University; Treasurer Deborah Zumwalt, Vice President And General Counsel at Stanford University; and Secretary Jerry Blakemore, Vice President and General Counsel for Northern Illinois University. In addition to his NACUA leadership and service, Mullowney also serves on the Board of the Association of Florida Colleges, is a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in Education Law and serves on its Education Law Committee, and serves as Program Chair for the Community College Conference on Legal Issues, now in its eighth year. Mullowney joined Valencia in 1994. He counsels the District Board of Trustees and advises the president, faculty and staff on a wide range of legal, policy and legislative issues. He received his B.B.A. degree from the University of Miami School of Business, and his J.D. and LL.M. degrees from the University of Miami School of Law. He is licensed to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, the Florida Supreme Court and the California Supreme Court.

KINER TO SIT ON FSAE BOARD OF DIRECTORS The elections for the 2013-14 Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE) Board of Directors and Foundation Board of Trustees are complete and AFC’s Marsha Kiner will serve on both. Kiner will also serve as the 2013-2014 membership committee chair. With over 700 members, the Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE) represents association industry professionals who are CEO’s, senior management, meeting planners, membership staff, marketing staff, the receptionists and anyone in between. FSAE is the gateway to and for association professionals in Florida. “We are very proud of Marsha Kiner’s selection as a board member to the FASE Board. Marsha is a very dedicated and loyalty Associate Director of AFC. She has the ability to make things happen. She is a very positive person that will add a wealth of knowledge to the board,” AFC President Byron Todd said.

f you asked me today about myself I would say, hi, my name is Angela Salmon; I have been a librarian assistant for six years and in five of those years I have worked at Florida State College at Jacksonville. I have been an Association of Florida Colleges member for almost a year and currently am my Chapter’s Historian and Downtown Campus Representative. Eventually, I will play an active role on an AFC commission. However, if you had asked me a year ago about whom I was or what I did, I would tell you, “Hi, I’m Angela and am a librarian assistant one,” and that would be it. So, what is different about me today from a year ago? Well, a lot! With much support from my colleagues and association members I have sought out and tossed myself into a whirlwind of professional development, networking opportunities, and any leadership event that crossed my path. Over the past year I have been involved with my AFC Chapter, attended the 63rd Annual AFC Convention, the 2013 AFC Leadership Conference,

and recently the 2013 AFC Joint Commission Conference. With that being said I was a ‘first-timer’ to a lot of events this past year and if you are like me you might consider all unchartered waters overwhelming at first. However, I would like to be the first to reassure any AFC newbies reading this article that there is nothing to squirm over when getting involved with your Association of Florida Colleges Chapter, Region, or overall State. Any and all members of this association are positive, encouraging, and will even break out a compass to help you charter the unknown. So in regards to breaking out a compass and chartering the unknown here are some tips from a once AFC newbie. When attending any AFC functions for the first time I found it helpful to have a few of the following items: a conference agenda, your business cards, something to jot notes down, and caffeine (which is optional) Also, if possible, you may want to highlight or circle on the agenda which presentations you would like to view before arriving

at your AFC event of choice. Furthermore, don’t be afraid to latch onto an AFC veteran who can help you with the ins and outs of an association function. You will be learning tons of information and meeting so many new people that having a go-to person for questions can be helpful. During certain functions you may also want to consider your choice of commission. There are a wide variety of commissions for members to choose from and to explore. Dr. Jeff Allbritten, President, Edison State College Dr. Allbritten holds a Doctor of Arts degree in chemistry from Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, a Master of Science degree in mathematics from Murray State University, Murray, KY, and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, also conferred by Murray State University. He has been an Associate Professor, a faculty member, an Associate Dean, a Campus President and today, President, Edison State College. What is the latest book you have read? Tom Clancy’s Red Rabbit. What is on your playlist? Songs by Journey, Def Leppard, Queen, Dixie Chicks, Andrea Bocelli, ABBA, New England and Don Henley. What advice would you give your 17 year-old self? Enjoy your youth; play more music and backpack through Europe. What is the best advice you have received? Dr. Jim Hindman was the Provost at Middle Tennessee State University. It was the summer of 1991 and I had just finished my doctorate and was preparing to come to Florida. He told me I had a good thing here and to stay for greater opportunities. By gaining that experience of different roles and responsibilities at the university, it helped catapult me to where I am today. What will AFC look like in 2020? I think there will be a broader participation base and that the organization as a whole will have a greater impact and influence on legislative issues. READY. SET. pick a commission that pertains only to your job but can pick a commission that strikes your interest. Instead of working in the library maybe one day you will decide to move towards a career in marketing and communications. That’s only one of the many beauties of being associated with this group. People will assist you in your goals as long as you give the time and show initiative. When present at the many informative sessions, meetings, and workshops I would also suggest inquiring about AFC’s Certified College Professionals program. Even if you do not plan to lead anytime soon having leadership skills will assist you in the way you conduct projects and how to tackle changes within your 15 I CURRENT August 2013

institution. Leadership training is like the Swiss army knife (… or Duct tape, whichever you prefer) of tools, it is multi-purpose and comes in handy at random moments. Overall, events with the Association of Florida Colleges are high energy life experiences that should be taken in one moment at a time. Every conversation you have, every session you attend, and every laugh you chuckle, just try to be in the moment. Certified College Professional Program The Certified College Professional (CCP) Program will provide AFC member with the opportunity to earn a designation related to their work as a college professional, and expose them to content and experience they may not be able to obtain elsewhere. The CCP program provides significant value-added benefits for membership in the AFC and enhances the AFC’s role as the primary professional development provider for the Florida College System.

Commission End of the Year Report

Region End of the Year Report

Reporting Period is October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013. All nominations must be received by October 28, 2013.

The Commission End of the Year Report will now be used in the judging process for the Outstanding Commission of the Year. In the hopes of soliciting more participation in the awards program, the report has been streamlined. The purpose of the report is still to offer Commission chairs a measurable tool to use in planning and implementing a successful year in compliance with the Commission Vitality Report found in the AFC Bylaws, Article VIII, Section 2.

Honorary Life Membership Award

All nominations must be received by September 9, 2013 The Honorary Life Membership Award is the highest honor that the Association of Florida Colleges can bestow on an individual. It is an award of appreciation for significant, long-term contribution to AFC and/or the state college system. It is the crowning achievement that recognizes long-term dedication.

Distinguished Service Member Award All nominations must be received by September 9, 2013

Distinguished Service Member Award is awarded to members of the Association of Florida Colleges for an exceptional achievement at the chapter, region, commission and/or state level. This award may be awarded more than once to any member for outstanding service or achievement.
