President’s Message

Relief after Hurricane Irma

A

s I began putting my thoughts into words for this edition of CURRENT, the images of a powerful hurricane wreaking havoc across our state earlier this month came to the forefront. As we all kept an eye on that storm in the Atlantic, watching it grow larger and larger, the questions, “Will it turn east?”, “Will it turn west?”, and, “Will it keep strengthening?” gave us all anxiety. We started preparing for nature’s fury, some of us evacuating, not knowing if we may have a home to come back to. Worrying not only for ourselves, our families, and our friends, but the entire state. I was with our Executive Director and CEO Michael Brawer at the Pensacola Chapter meeting on September 6th and I must admit, I was worried for my family, my friends, my colleagues, and the students at my college as to what may happen if that hurricane kept heading our way.

Seeing the devastating photos and news coverage of all the areas impacted across the state is heartbreaking. But we are recovering, rebuilding, and growing stronger. It was reassuring that our colleges had plans ready to put into place to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff. I would like to recognize the important role provided by the colleges used as shelters and fuel stations. Most of our colleges have since reopened and are handling repairs. It will take a while to get “back-to-normal”, but we will continue to Empower Leaders and Transform Lives. I am so proud to be part of an Association that automatically established a relief fund to those AFC families who are suffering through this tragic occurrence. It is just another way we truly are the Great 28.

Hurricane Irma has marked its place in our history, but it will not define us.

AFC members have a lot to celebrate at this year’s Annual Meeting and Conference in November. I look forward to seeing all of you there where we will gain helpful and educational tips from our sessions, celebrate member accomplishments, but most of all, come together as a stronger, unified Florida College System.

AFC MEMBER FAMILIES HURRICANE RELIEF FUND ESTABLISHED

The Association of Florida Colleges Foundation, Inc. and the Association of Florida Colleges have combined resources of $20,000 to provide financial support up to $500 to AFC members who experienced extensive loss to personal property and possessions during Hurricane Irma.

Funds may be used for any tangible need such as temporary housing, transportation, clothing, food, child care, medical, and repairs. Funds will be provided directly to the eligible applicant.

W

e’ve all learned a lot about giving lately. One thing you can say about Americans is that when crisis strikes, divisions amongst us fade. Suddenly we are not a populous of differences vying for position on the great ladder of society. We help, we assist, we share, we sweat, we struggle, and we bond together to overcome any adversity.

Hurricane Irma gave us plenty reason to bond. For several weeks, we watched it move and grow as it headed towards us. We worried with colleagues at work, with family and friends at home, with partners at the gym, with shoppers at the stores, and with congregants at church or synagogue. We shared preparation ideas and how-tos. Each of us had something to offer that could help another.

Here at the AFC, we made a plan to do our little part to give. We decided to give back to you, the members who were hurt the most, who lost the most, and who it cost the most. It wasn’t a hard decision. And it didn’t take long for the AFC leadership to give me the green light to establish the AFC Families Hurricane Assistance Fund. It didn’t take much to convince the AFC Foundation we needed to do this under its name. I told them we didn’t have the money, but we will find it and, we will raise it. We did and we are.

We have no choice. You are us. What we get from you makes us. We plan to continue giving back to you until we have helped as many members as possible with the funds we have available. It’s a big part of what this association is about - service, camaraderie, trust, and strength. You are there for us; we are here for you.

AFC Foundation, Inc. Professional Development Scholarship Deadline November 1st!

What is the AFC Professional Development Scholarship?

The AFC Professional Development Scholarship is offered by the AFC Foundation, Inc. to members who can demonstrate an effective professional development plan to advance their knowledge and skills as a college professional.

Any AFC member may apply for the scholarship.

How can the scholarship funds be used?

The scholarship funds provided are to support member participation in any AFC Professional Development Program. These include: • AFC Leadership Conference • AFC Annual Conference • AFC Certified College Professional Program • AFC Commission Conference • AFC Regional Conference How many scholarships will be awarded?

Up to ten (10) scholarships will be awarded annually. Award amounts will range from $300 $500 each. Funds may be used to cover costs of registration or enrollment, travel, and materials to any of the events listed above.

Priority will be given to those who have not previously received a scholarship.

Our summer 2017 enrollment was up eight percent and that trend is continuing this fall.” She continued, “It has been the highest honor and privilege of my life to work with our talented faculty, staff, students, and community colleagues as we have propelled this amazing College forward, but it is time to transition to my successor who can build on this foundation and raise the College to an even higher level of performance.” Dr. McGee will

“Officer Baxter’s death is a terrible tragedy for all of us at Eastern Florida,”

said college President Dr. Jim Richey. “He was an outstanding young man dedicated to his family and profession, and who was striving to improve the community where he lived. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Detective Sadia Baxter, and their four children. He was a three-year veteran of the department. Police say Baxter and Howard were slain during a routine stop when Miller opened fire on them about 9:30 p.m. They didn’t have a chance to fire back. “It looked like they were surprised,” Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell told the Orlando Sentinel. Baxter died shortly after the shooting. Howard died of his wounds Saturday.

WORKSHOP 2: LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE: MAKING THE MOVE FROM PROFESSOR TO ADMINISTRATOR - IS IT FOR YOU? Presenters:

Gardner Institute for Excellent in Undergraduate Education This pre-conference workshop will bring two higher education thought leaders who are leading a national campaign to improve the currently abysmal performance in gateway courses. For purposes of the movement, gateway courses are defined as developmental and/or college creditbearing courses with high enrollment within or across sections and unacceptably high rates of D, F, W (for withdrawal) and I (for incomplete) grades (DFWI rates). These courses serve as gateways to all “guided pathways,” general education “cores,” and majors – areas of study in which colleges and universities across the nation, especially community and state colleges, are realizing deplorable DWFI rates. Contrary to the tenets of social Darwinism, it doesn’t’ have to be this way. This workshop is designed for college faculty who teach gateway courses and who would like to improve student learning and outcomes therein, for their department chairs, deans and chief academic officers. The presenters will explore the many facets of this challenge, how these courses correlate with attrition, and lack of social justice and equity, and most importantly, what can be done to improve these outcomes. This event will be didactic and interactive, motivational, inspirational, informational, and surely provocative!

The Jumping the Fence into Administrative Affairs Leadership Experience will provide faculty the foundation for middle management administrative leadership growth and development. The Leadership Experience is for faculty considering administrative roles. The University of Florida’s Institute of Higher Education has developed a 21st Century Work Profile that identifies the significant leadership attributes, characteristics, and competencies that are essential for leadership success. Through integrated exercises and examination of cases participants will learn role-transitioning techniques from national experts and practitioners.

This is a cohort registered Leadership Experience with the pre-conference requirement of each attendee completing the WAVE Assessment. Participants will be charged a fee of $250, which includes pre-and post-WAVE Assessments, interactive Leadership Experience conducted by national experts, and six months of executive coaching to produce a Professional Development Personalized Learning Plan. Participants will have the option to register for Graduate Credit with additional learning activities for an additional registration fee (to be paid on-site).

WAVE Feedback & "Professional Development Personalized Learning Plan" Tuesday, April 3rd from 9 – Noon The Leadership Experience Cohort will have a feedback session regarding the results of theirpersonal WAVE Assessment. The 21st Century Leadership profile will be reviewed regarding the leadership characteristics, competences and attributes identified to effectively serve institutions of higher education. Attendees will then be introduced to the individualized creation of a "Professional Development Personalized Learning Plan."

Noon – 1:00pm – Working Lunch Leadership Experience case studies will be sequenced by topic and presenters for learning key leadership theories and practical models that will support Leading Your Institution into the Future.

Chapters CHIPOLA COLLEGE

PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE

The Chipola College chapter recently hosted the college’s annual Back to School Luncheon. Chapter President Joc Calloway addressed the assembly about the benefits of joining ACF which included community service, raising money for Chipola AFC Scholarships, and working with members within our college as well as others within the state. During the event, the chapter accepted donations for the Chipola Ministries Food Bank. The group collected over fifty pounds of food and $333.25 to donate to those in need in the local Chipola area.

Summer 2017 was a hot, but productive season for the Pensacola State College (PSC) chapter. Members attended conferences, held a back-to-school supply drive, held a recruitment drive during new employee orientation, as well as other activities. Chapter member Mel Miner and others provided Hawaiian-style refreshments for the college’s July 18th Board of Trustees meeting. Chapter members Sheila Nichols, PSC Marketing Director, and Mary Mabins, PSC Marketing and Information Coordinator, attended the Communications and Marketing Commission Conference held July 19-21 in Fort Myers. The chapter provided refreshments and conducted a membership recruitment drive during new faculty and staff orientation on August 15. The chapter also participated in “Cram the Van,” a school supplies drive on the college’s Pensacola, Milton, and Warrington campuses. The supplies were donated to the local United Way for needy children of Escambia County for the 2017-2018 school year.

The Seminole State Chapter of AFC has been very busy the past couple of months. Board members gave presentations on the AFC during New Employee Orientation June 7th, July 6th, and August 3rd. The past president spoke at the College Advisory Council’s meeting on July 25th. Chapter members attended the Membership Development Workshop on June 28th at the College of Central Florida, the Campus Safety Symposium also held at the College of Central Florida, where Adam Stark presented “Information Security”. The Chapter had a table at the Faculty Welcome Back Meet and Greet and sponsored a table at the Adjunct Faculty Fair on August 16th.

Kudos MIAMI-DADE COLLEGE RECOGNIZED BY THE U.S. DEPT. OF EDUCATION AS ONE OF THE LEADING INSTITUTIONS FOR HISPANICS IN THE UNITED STATES. The accomplishment is highlighted in the August issue of Hispanic Outlook (HO) magazine. Every year HO magazine releases a Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics issue, which consists of several lists from the Dept. of Education. This year’s lists include: Total Bachelor’s Degrees Granted to Hispanics; Most Master’s Degrees Granted to Hispanics; and Total Enrollment – Most Hispanics. The Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics issue also features special top 10 lists from the Department of Education for “What Schools Are Granting Most Degrees to Hispanics in Specific Areas of Study” ranging from osteopathic medicine and dentistry to education and public relations.
