Q&A with Sasha Bikoff
What was the inspiration behind S. Harris x Sasha Bikoff?
The collection was initially inspired by fashion, drawing from runway collections from the Y2K era to the present. This inspiration grew and intensified with my immersion in the TV series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” and my return to my native Upper East Side of Manhattan. I became fascinated by the chic, fashionable women of Manhattan, their personalities, and their lifestyles, and how these elements could be translated into fabrics. The collection balances classical elements with boldness and a modern sensibility, featuring colors ranging from soft to bright and a variety of rich, luxurious textures.
How did the collection come together?
My design process always begins with extensive research, which evolves into a story that portrays various lifestyles for different home settings. This collection offers something for everyone. For example, the lace was inspired by Marc Jacobs’s collection with Louis Vuitton and Marella Agnelli’s lace bedroom. Capote
Check evokes the classical checks of the 1980s Upper East Side, while the Chain Mail trimming pays homage to Donatella Versace. The Moneta Antica trimming is an homage to Bvlgari and ancient Roman coins, while Rue Cambon is a Chanelinspired tweed.
Did you put any of yourself into these designs?
Yes, this collection reflects my aesthetic, particularly my love for whimsy, color, and fashion. I approach designing a room as I would dressing myself.
How can we see your experience as a designer shine through in the collection?
My experience in interior design allows me to identify gaps in the market and to forecast trends from art and pop culture and apply them to the design world.
