NOTE

here is something about weddings that has always held my attention.

Not just the celebration, but the intention behind it. The decision to gather people, to mark a moment, to say this matters. Over the past two years, that appreciation has grown into something deeply personal. I have been fortunate to be part of two weddings within our own clan, and with close family friends included, seven weddings in total are unfolding around us.

Four have already been celebrated, with more still to come. It has been a season of love in motion.

What makes this period even more meaningful is that each of these weddings has, in one way or another, found its way into editions of The Midlands magazine.

These are not distant features or styled shoots. They are stories we know. Stories of love that we have watched evolve. They are grounded in legacy and continuity, in families where parents have been married for over thirty years, met at school and nurtured families. While this is our story, I am sure many of you have your own unique love story.

Every love story is different, yet there is far more that binds them than separates them.

Commitment. Hope. The quiet courage to choose one another, again and again.

There is something powerful about seeing these stories told on paper, but nothing compares to turning the pages and being reminded of a wedding of your own son and new daughter-in-law. In that moment, the magazine becomes something else entirely.

It becomes a marker of time, pride, and gratitude held in print.

What makes the Midlands so special is that it has been the backdrop for so many of these celebrations, and it is easy to see why. This is a region that offers open spaces without feeling remote, beauty without being overworked, and venues that allow couples to create weddings that feel considered rather than formulaic. From heritage estates and working farms to forest lodges and modern country venues, the Midlands offers a depth of choice that few others can match.

Staying on site, gathering guests for an entire weekend, or booking nearby accommodation and making a celebration of the surroundings has become part of the Midlands wedding experience. Weddings here extend beyond a single day. They become shared time. Slow mornings, long tables, fires, views and conversations that continue well after the ceremony itself.

This edition is our celebration of that. Of love, commitment and the places that hold these moments so beautifully. The Midlands does not simply host weddings. It holds them long after the last song is played.

Springbok Spirit Howick Bokke fans flocked to the Springbok Fan Park at Stockowners Outdoor Park to watch the match on the big screen with food, music, and a relaxed outdoor atmosphere.

Undeterred by light rain, the evening went ahead with plenty of energy as guests arrived early to enjoy the vibe before kick-off.

s another year begins, there’s a hush that lingers beneath the noise of resolutions and reinvention - a quieter question that asks: Who have I become through it all? Because if we’re honest, most of us didn’t glide through last year. Plans shifted. Certainties fell away. The lessons arrived uninvited, but perhaps just on time. I’ve learned that growth rarely feels like blooming. More often, it feels like breaking.

The Year That Didn’t Go to Plan Life has a way of rewriting our carefully drawn maps. It whispers, “Not this way …

I have another way in mind.” And when that happens, healing becomes less about “moving on” and more about learning to move with. Some days we feel strong and sure-footed; other days, we’re undone by exhaustion or memory. But it’s in those tender days that gentleness becomes our greatest teacher - the kind that reminds us to rest, to breathe, to be simply.

Redefining Strength For years, I mistook strength for endurance - the ability to keep smiling, keep pushing, keep holding it all together. Now I know better. Strength isn’t about how much you carry. CEAGAN & COURTNEY SCOTT Our Story

We met back in 2016 during our Matric Rage festival. We didn’t go to the same school, but we both lived in Ballito and had close mutual friends, so I guess it was inevitable that we’d meet eventually. We became great friends from the start. I (Courtney) spent a year in America, but when I came back home in 2018, we met again and started hanging out almost every day, and officially started dating in January 2019. We got engaged in 2023 and then married in July 2025.

We really did take the whole “marry your best friend” advice literally, as we’re going on almost a decade of friendship now!

The Venue

From the moment we set foot at Brahman Hills in the Midlands, Ceags and I looked at each other wideeyed and instantly read each other’s minds; this was where we wanted to get married.

Why the Midlands?

It has a picturesque, misty mountain beauty. It’s a peaceful place to visit, let alone the perfect place to celebrate an occasion such as a wedding. The scenery effortlessly provides the most amazing backdrop for photos, too.

The Décor

We chose emerald green, black, grey and white for the décor colour palette, incorporating these colours through quirky vases, ribbons, and candles. To stick with our palette, we mainly used white flowers, cream pampas grass, and some greenery,

including pops of black. Across the chapel and reception venue, we used baby’s breath, potted orchids, snapdragons, pampas grass, roses, and silver dollars.

The Dress

From the moment we got engaged, I started browsing for dresses, and

by December 2023, I had decided on my design and paid the deposit!

I found a style that resonated with me so much I just couldn’t convince myself of anything otherwise. Ché from Ché Couture added the requested details, like the type of lace and sleeve design, to the base dress.

The Tux

I chose my suit based on two factors. One, it seemed to be what was trending at the time, and two, I had read somewhere that the groom should always be the best-dressed male at the wedding. I chose to go with the top formal dress code for a man, being a white blazer and a white bow tie, to create the ultimate white tux look.

Favourite Moment of the Day, Bride?

The quiet moment we shared in the wine cellar, sipping on tea and eating some pork belly squares and macaroni cheese balls in between our photoshoot - having that alone time to fully comprehend and appreciate everything and each other was so special.

Favourite Moment of the Day, Groom?

A standout moment for me would have to be the moment we went into the underground bar area to retreat.

We got to sit down, have some tea and snacks, and be in the moment, just the two of us.

Advice for Future Brides

We had two years to plan our wedding, but honestly, we had all the big things done after getting engaged, and at times, we found ourselves with nothing to plan or do. It’s NEVER too early to start prepping. ALSO - lean on your friends and family! We got so much good advice from those who had already done the wedding thing, and it saved us hours of brainwork.

CADE & NATASCHA FOSTER Our Story

Cade and I met on our first date in January 2023, just before I left KZN to complete my honours in the Western Cape. One date quickly became many, and we fell deeply in love while navigating long distance. After I completed my studies and returned home, everything unfolded naturally.

Cade proposed in December 2024, and we got married on 18 October 2025; it was the most magical day.

The Venue

We visited five wedding venues in a single day, and Fordoun was the first on our list. From the moment we arrived, we were completely captivated.

Why the Midlands?

As a teenager, I spent many Saturdays assisting at weddings across KZN, and the Midlands’ weddings always had something special about them. It has been my dream wedding location for a long time. We both love the countryside charm and often escape to the Midlands for a weekend of connection and relaxation.

The Décor

The overall theme we wanted to achieve for our wedding day was ‘elegant, timeless, and genuine’. Our colour scheme was forest green, white, and a touch of champagne.

For our floral arrangement, Glynnis from Wild Poppy Studio captured our vision perfectly. She used classic white roses and deep green foliage, adding softness and texture to the bouquets, ceremony arrangements, and reception tables with a variety of in-season, locally sourced white blooms, including snapdragons.

The Dress

I wanted a gown that matched our theme, but most importantly, one that felt like I was wearing the dress, not the other way around. I chose an elegant, fitted gown with a halter neckline, keyhole back, and a beautiful train from A'mour Bridal Boutique. The cathedral-style veil and touches of lace added the perfect “wow” factor to its simple, refined silhouette.

The Tux

Cade looked incredibly dapper in a custom-made tuxedo from Armitage Mens Outfitters. The service he received from Neval was exceptional, transforming what can sometimes be a cookie-cutter experience for grooms into something truly luxurious and unforgettable.

Favourite Moment of the Day, Bride?

It is impossible to pinpoint a single favourite moment from our wedding day. Everything felt so incredibly special and perfect. I cherished the quality time spent with my best friends, my mom, and my sister as we enjoyed hair and makeup while sipping mimosas. I felt butterflies standing with my dad behind the

chapel doors, moments before walking down the aisle. I loved dancing with my new husband, our friends, and even my 90-year-old granny.

Favourite Moment of the Day, Groom?

My favourite moment was definitely the build-up to seeing my bride walk down the aisle. You wait your entire life for that moment, and when it finally happens, it is breathtaking, and over in the blink of an eye.

Advice for Future Brides

If you’re not hiring a wedding planner, set up a shareable Google Sheet to track bookings, vendors, tasks, and your budget. Sharing the document with your wedding party ensures everyone stays in the loop.

TRENT & PAIGE STRYDOM Our Story

It all began at Ashton International College in Ballito, where we fell in love at age 16. We grew up together through our years at Stellenbosch University and eventually settled in Cape Town. To mark eight years, Trent planned eight surprises, ending with the biggest one of all: an engagement ring. One year later, we said “I do”.

The Venue

We visited Netherwood Farm exactly one year before our wedding, and instantly fell in love with the green forest, the glass chapel, and the reception venue overlooking the dam.

The beautiful 20-sleeper house made it feel like a true family celebration.

After a full day of viewing, snow began to fall - our final sign that this was where we were meant to get married.

my sister, Tanielle, they created the most beautiful floral arch, filled with soft greenery and white blooms. My bouquet was made of full, luscious peony roses, while my bridesmaids carried timeless white roses.

From the very beginning, my dream as a bride was simple - I wanted to feel like a princess. Just like the theme of our wedding, I wanted a dress I could look back on in 50 years and still be completely in love with. My dress was made in Cape Town by Molteno Couture. The fitted corset and full ballgown skirt were everything I ever imagined.

The Tux

Trent chose a black tuxedo with a waistcoat and a black bow tie. Very smart, fitted and classy.

Saying our personal vows to each other. Even though we were standing in a room with 130 people, it felt like we were in our own little bubble.

After a whole morning of anticipation and waiting, finally seeing her and being reunited was undeniably the highlight of everything.

Advice for Future Brides

Plan as much as you can in those first few months so that when the weeks leading up to your wedding arrive, you can be fully present and soak up every moment. The day goes by so quickly, so don’t stress about the tiny details they won’t matter in the bigger picture.

Why the Midlands?

It was the perfect middle ground between Ballito and Jo’burg for our family and friends to travel to. The forests, farmlands, and untouched nature have a unique beauty.

​The Décor

We chose a blend of soft nudes and whites, single-stem vases, candlecovered tables and fairy lights draped across the room. Behind us, a glowing flower arch framed our sweetheart table. Our flowers were extra special because they were lovingly done by my granny, Elmarie. She’s part of a flower club in Ballito and, as her wedding gift, she insisted on arranging and gifting all of our florals. With the help of

n the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, schools shape more than academics; they create shared memories, enduring relationships, and a lasting sense of belonging. For many families, these schools are woven into their history, with generations returning because the schools are part of their identity and family life.

Some can trace three generations through the same classrooms. Others move back to their hometown so their children can experience the same rites of passage they once lived.

Whether it is the smell of polish on dining-hall floors, a “war story” told by a parent about life in their day, or the echo of a school song, these are the threads that tie one generation to the next.

The legacy of time is not just nostalgia; it is the recognition that what was built decades ago still has relevance today, preparing young people to meet challenges and to value hard work.

Time

It connects the sepia photographs hanging in a common room to the teenagers who lounge there today.

For families whose children and grandchildren return to the same schools they once attended, the small continuities mean the most.

Some things, however, have changed.

Georgie Makris recalls her father’s tales of boarding school life: “My grandpa only had cold water, no hot showers.” Simple toilets, no luxuries; many boys were involved in constructing school buildings around this time, but those conditions shaped character.

At St John’s DSG, Merryn, Shellaine, and others remember an Afrikaans teacher, Mev Harris, who played cassette tapes during class and let them out five minutes early for lunch because everyone loved her so much.

Decades later, their daughters were taught by the same teacher, who now used YouTube to play Afrikaans music in class. One of them saw Mev in a doctor’s office recently, and she immediately recognised them. That small recognition and triggering of a happy memory made both women’s days.

Ongoing family participation and involvement in school life reinforces

Roger Don-Wauchope tells his grandchildren about a boy from his day who used to do handstands on Pinnacles, a rocky outcrop on the Hilton College Estate. Roger never had a head for heights and never climbed it himself. Imagine his delight when, at 87, he received a card from the school: a pencil drawing of boys on Pinnacles, and one of them was his grandson.

These are not stories about buildings or schedules, but about people carrying memories forward and the sense of continuity they create.

Bruce Peattie, says, “The estate on our school campus was a common thread to all three generations of our family and a place where we found solace and peace. Our farm on the valley below Hilton, was visible from the classroom block and lured all three generations to the trek down the valley. The paths to run home on a Sunday may have differed, but the destination was always the same. This time at home was always well received, but I was often a bit stressed on the ten-kilometre run back up the hill to make it on time for chapel.”

House gates. In this time, the values and beliefs of Cowan House have not wavered. Since its foundation by David Black in 1948, the school has moved premises, survived a devastating fire and successfully introduced girls, and it continues to adjust today to an everchanging educational landscape.”

Family

The true legacy of Midlands schooling is not its ivy-covered buildings or history books, but the laughter at the breakfast table on match-day mornings, the nerves before exams, and the same misty drives to school year after year.

Some families see their children follow in their footsteps; for others, friendships and shared values endure across decades.

Members of the Don-Wauchope family have a ritual passed down from grandparents to grandchildren: “In our family, we still recite the school grace, especially when my dad is with us.

It was recited at the school when his grandchildren attended, and hopefully will still be recited when his great-grandchildren attend.”

Why Legacy Matters?

a sense of belonging - a sense that they are part of something much bigger, rooted in purpose, community, and shared values (values which define South Africans across the world). I have heard many stories about South Africans in other countries impressing with an offer of help to carry a stranger’s boxes, helping the elderly or standing to welcome someone new to the table.

The Beginning I started baking as a part-time hobby in 2020 while I was still working in finance. In 2021, I made the leap to pursue baking full-time. What truly inspires me is seeing the joy a cake can bring to someone’s special day.

Every smile, every “wow” moment, makes all the hard work completely worth it.

Cake Trends Over the last two years, vintage-style cakes have definitely become one of the biggest trends. That said, many couples still love the timeless elegance of a classic white cake decorated with flowers that match their wedding blooms. I’ve also noticed fruit cakes making a small comeback - not quite as popular as they once were, but they’re slowly returning.

How have dietary preferences influenced wedding cakes?

of a consideration in recent years. I often suggest incorporating a smaller gluten-free or vegan tier, or offering cupcakes in those options, so everyone can enjoy a slice without compromising on taste or style.

I think wedding cakes will continue to become more personal and creative.

Couples are moving away from traditional “cookie-cutter” designs and are choosing cakes that reflect their own style and story. I also think we’ll see more modern shapes, textures, and interactive cake ideas, like the long rectangular cakes that guests can help cut. I’m really excited about a few new trends that are emerging for 2026 weddings. Pavlova cakes and croquembouche-style cakes are definitely gaining attention - they’re such creative and elegant alternatives to traditional wedding cakes.

The Beginning It all started in 2015 with the encouragement from my amazing friends! I started baking for my own kids' parties, and soon after, my friends were asking me to bake for them. One particular friend asked if I was interested in making wedding cakes - because she would send all her brides my way. The thought grew on me, and eventually I joined a cake decorating course in Durban.

After the course, I felt confident enough to start advertising. From the first week of advertising, I got two orders. The second week brought me three orders. I have been swamped ever since!

Advice for anyone planning their wedding cake right now?

Start planning early. Book your baker well in advance! Set a clear budget.

Cake Trends Most wedding cakes reflect the couple's personality. Semi-naked cakes took first place not too long ago, but couples were still playful with flavours and flowers. Vintagestyle cakes like Lambeth piping have made a big comeback. Couples are also re-embracing pressed flowers, bold colours, and different textures.

I am definitely seeing a trend where couples are moving away from the minimalistic look toward more bold statement pieces.

Couples will often ask for one tier or a separate cake to be either vegan or gluten-free.

What do you foresee for wedding cakes in 2026?

I think we'll see more traditional styles making a comeback. I also think a blend of bold artistry and thoughtful minimalism will take centre stage, with a strong focus on personalisation.

What wedding cake trend are you most excited about right now?

I absolutely love the old-school or Lambeth-style cakes. There is just something so satisfying about piping décor onto a cake. It's a challenge as well as a skill to get it done tastefully, with a very satisfying final look.

How much do the bride and groom's dress styles and the venue's decorations influence the cake’s design?

The cake styles are hardly ever influenced by the venue décor or the dress. It is a matter of the personality of the bridal couple.

How have dietary preferences influenced wedding cakes?

Many couples are choosing different flavours for each tier to satisfy diverse guest preferences. We do not recommend stacking for vegan, eggless, sugar-free and lactose-free cakes as they are often unstable and compromise the stability of the cake.

What do you foresee for wedding cakes in 2026?

They have changed a lot, and designs have become more exciting and interesting to work with. Challenges with the designs are frequent, but we thrive on this and are always up for conquering new designs.

Jarryd Sunkel Starting out At the age of 10, I DJ’d at my mom’s 40th birthday with a pair of tape decks and an old antiquated amplifier. I’ve always had a deep love for music, which naturally led me to DJing. At age 16, I started out playing at smaller events and private parties, but weddings quickly captured my heart.

Why weddings?

They are special because every moment tells a story, from the first dance to the last song of the night.

Unlike other events, a wedding is filled with emotion, love, and connection, and music has the power to amplify that. I love seeing the dance floor come alive, watching guests of all ages let loose, and being part of memories that couples will cherish forever.

Starting out Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was 15 years old, I was DJing house parties, playing on whatever sound equipment I could get my hands on. As the years went on, the events became more formal, and eventually I found myself booked for weddings.

Why weddings?

They have a magic you cannot fake.

The emotional side is what pulls me in every time. Seeing a groom burst into tears when he sees his bride, or watching a couple hold each other during their first dance, reminds me how powerful music can be.

Choosing music for a wedding can feel overwhelming at first, so I try to make the process simple, relaxed and enjoyable. I start by getting to know the couple, their personalities, the atmosphere they want and the type of day they imagine from start to finish.

I encourage them to share any music they love. A do-not-play list is just as important.

Most requested songs There are definitely songs that used to be almost guaranteed choices for certain moments. For a long time, songs like “Canon in D” by Pachelbel and “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri were the go-to options for ceremonies.

Music trends at weddings There has been a strong rise in nostalgia over the last few years.

Songs from the late 1990s and early 2000s are popping up everywhere, and they create huge reactions because people grew up with them.

Couples are also choosing more personalised ceremony music, often acoustic or modern tracks that hold special meaning for them.

Advice for couples Communication is the most important part of choosing the right music. Talk openly with your DJ about what you love and what you don’t like. Share playlists, favourite songs, special moments and even guilty pleasures. My advice is to choose music that feels like you, not what you think you should pick.

A special musical moment from a wedding that stood out to you One of the most memorable moments I have experienced was at Haycroft Farm last year. For the couple’s first dance, we created a low fog effect across the floor. The coordinator set up helium balloons with mini balloons inside, which were released during a specific moment in the song.

I have done a thousand first dances, but this one felt magical.

Ché Couture began when Cheline Redelinghuys could not afford her dream dress for her matric prom, so she made it herself. That spark ignited a passion that led to sewing hundreds of garments by the end of her schooling career, winning the prestigious Gert Johann Coetzee Bursary, and eventually opening Ché Couture in 2022. Her studio now thrives in the Creative Studio - a collaborative hub with other wedding vendors providing brides a one-stop destination for planning their perfect day.

Over the next five years, Ché Couture aims to expand into dress rental services, ready-made bridal collections, and an elevated, exclusive couture line while continuing to craft signature statement pieces and novelty designs.

Wedding dresses are special because they’re a symbol of who you are as a person. They are made up of years of dreams from childhood leading up to your big day, an investment that represents the most important day of your life. Reflecting your personal style and personality - a wedding gown is an extension of the bride’s story; it is meant to be lived in, felt, and remembered for a lifetime.

What do you love about what you do?

I love the confidence and the outcomes of the work we create.

Seeing a woman’s face light up and watching her feel her best after creating a beautiful piece is the highlight for me. Each bride’s moment is unique, and being part of that experience is incredibly rewarding.

My love for sewing wedding dresses began at age nine. A gown is something you feel with your whole being; it’s a story, an heirloom, a celebration of beauty and femininity.

Each gown tells the story of the bride and my own journey in creating it.

There is an unspoken magic in seeing a bride step into a dress and light up with confidence and joy.

Maryke’s journey began with sewing as a child, selling handmade items at 10, and creating her first bridal gown at 19. By age 21 (2001), she had launched her business, Bespoke

by Maryke, long before social media and smartphones redefined marketing and outreach. Today, she operates from her home studio with three full-time employees, producing bespoke gowns and her wedding dress collection, including Curves Collection, designed for

sizes 30-22. She also caters to long-distance brides from across South Africa and abroad. After experiencing severe burnout, Maryke’s five-year plan focuses on intentional, meaningful couture experiences, prioritising time and quality over scale. She aims to expand her Curves Collection and reintroduce seasonal summer dresses while maintaining intimate, personal experiences for each client.

Why couture?

Couture embraces authenticity and individuality. It values skill, time, and intention, allowing both the bride and me to fully express ourselves.

Every stage of creation - from initial sketches to fittings and final reveals is built on trust and connection.

What is the weirdest/most interesting item you’ve ever made?

I once hand-painted guipure lace for a bride who wanted autumn shades of brown and bronze. The result was a one-of-a-kind gown, and attending her wedding to see it come alive was unforgettable.

Refined, Modern & Precise Hanrie completed her three-year fashion and design course in 2005, which was also incidentally when she made her very first wedding gown.

Since then, she has gone on to work in the fashion industry designing daywear, matric dance gowns and other various garments for clients. But in 2014 she launched her flagship couture studio in DBN North, focusing exclusively on bridal gown design. Since then Hanrie and her team have created over 500 bridal gowns for brides all over the world.

Hanrie Lues Bridal specialises in bespoke couture gowns and demicouture off-the-rail styles. Her work

blends technical mastery with personal, heartfelt service. Each gown is drafted, cut, and fitted under her supervision, ensuring every client’s vision is realised. Her five-year focus is to maintain the integrity of her couture work, providing highquality, individualised gowns while continuing to celebrate each bride’s uniqueness and personal narrative.

Peak Perfection

A Two-Day Refuel at Cathedral Peak Hotel WORDS LORINDA SCOTT

Arrival After a four-ish hour drive from Ballito to Cathedral Peak Hotel, we were literally blown away by the visual change the short trip could bring, from the hustle and bustle of a seaside town to the serene and quiet mountains! This is a true sea-to-berg trip! Check-in was fast and friendly, and our weekend getaway had begun!

We took a walk to our room and were greeted by the most spectacular view of the peaks! Our room was beautiful, there was a huge bed and a comfortable sitting area, but what you see outside is truly fabulous.

We decided to just hang out in the room after the drive, and take in the quiet! We sat outside looking at the mountains, hearing the river gushing past, and listening to the birds

chirping. As the evening started, we moved into the lounge area, sipped on some sherry, and decided on our next move. A quick shower and then off to dinner!

Dinner Cathedral Peak Hotel is full board, so we loved that for the next couple of days, all we had to do was arrive for our meals. Dinner is buffet style with starters, mains, and desserts galore! (We basically decided on all our dinners on night one.) We started with a light starter; grilled calamari.

For our mains, we both went for the roast - beef, lamb, potatoes, veggies, green beans and a side salad! Yummy!

The huge stir fry and curry section was left for night two! For dessert, Justin chose the crème caramel, and I had the chocolate mousse. We ended

the evening with a cappuccino (and, of course, I had to have a small plate of cheese and biscuits!).

By 8:45 p.m., we were done with dinner and decided to take the longest route back to our room to ensure we burned off some dinner calories before winding down. We climbed into bed, leaving the curtains wide open to the Mountain View, watched Grand Designs and fell asleep (early for us) to the gentle sounds of thunder and rain!

Adventures After Breakfast We woke up early to a mist-covered mountain. It was interesting to have no visibility in front of us. Coffee was calling, and off we went to the fabulous

buffet breakfast! Here, again, was a smorgasbord of cereals, hot porridge, pastries and then all the hot breakfast options. As one of the guests told us, “You just have to ‘pace’ yourself.” No truer words have been spoken. With the mist clearing up around 10:00 a.m., we sat in the comfortable lounge area, facing the mountains, sipping on a second cup of coffee! The views here are everything, never will I have my back to this view.

Cathedral Peak offers a huge variety of activities for young and old!

From horse riding and quad biking to guided hikes ranging from 1 hour 30 minutes to the full 10-hour mountain hike option. The pools are also for those who just want to relax! Lunch was simple but had more than enough variety to choose from! I enjoyed a crumbed mushroom starter, followed by a light salad, chips, and a mini sausage roll. By this time, it felt like all we had done was eat; let’s not even worry about the two tea times with treats.

History, Hotel & Hikes The hotel is steeped in over 85 years of heritage and tradition! There are guests who have been coming here for 50 years! We took some time to look around the hotel, soaking in all the history on the walls and getting a real feel for the reason behind all that they do. It was super cool to see the origins of the hotel and the area!

While the unspoilt and unequivocally gorgeous surroundings keep drawing new people, too! The hotel caters for weddings, their guests, and families with kids. Their play areas outside and inside, and with daily activities planned to keep the kids happy and busy! Couples are also catered for with

private spaces to chill, and Harry’s bar is for adults only. This hotel has it all.

Cathedral Peak is well known for its gorgeous hikes. We chatted to one of the guides, who is super passionate about the area and all that it has to offer; they truly love taking people up and down the mountain.

With a beautiful sunny day and clear views on our last morning, we saw the hotel (and the Berg) in all kinds of moods! We left feeling relaxed, renewed, and refreshed - ready for our week of chicken and broccoli diet!

A Harvest of Fun and Friendly Competition!

ames and Beth Kelly are the founders of the annual Cabbage Competition hosted at Midlands Fable in Curry’s Post. The competition’s second year was celebrated on 13 December 2025, filled with farming fun, food, and the search for the Midlands’ mightiest cabbage! “We thought it would be a fun way to bring the community together for a bit of friendly competition (and maybe some bragging rights), while shining a light on local farming and produce,” shared Beth.

The competition welcomed local growers from Curry’s Post, Nottingham Road, Howick, Hilton, and Pietermaritzburg. Each participant received free seedlings, donated by CPS Seedlings. Once the cabbages were harvested, there was a Farmer’s Day Weigh-In. There were various cash prizes for first, second, and third place, and fun prizes for children who participated. “The results were incredible, proof that a bit of care and effort really does grow great things! We especially loved seeing the kids get involved, proudly showing off their homegrown cabbages,” said Beth. Last year’s competition also introduced the “Non-Farmer Award” to encourage more people to join in on the fun of growing their own produce.

he start of a new school year is exciting, but it can also bring big changes for children, and with change often comes challenges. New teachers, routines, and expectations can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially after a long holiday break.

For some children, the transition is smooth. For others, the shift can highlight areas where they might need extra support. This is why back-toschool time is such a valuable window for parents to notice how their child is coping, and to step in early if something doesn’t seem quite right.

Why early intervention matters We know that children’s brains are rapidly developing in the foundation years. If a child is struggling with attention, regulation, or learning skills, early support can make a lasting difference.

By noticing challenges sooner rather than later, we give children the best chance to develop the skills they need for confidence and success at school.

Tips to ease the transition Here are a few simple ways parents can support their children during this adjustment period: 1. Create predictable routines: Consistent sleep, wake-up, and homework times help children feel secure and ready for learning.

2. Practise separation: For younger children, small moments of separation (like playdates without parents) can help them adjust to time away from home.

3. Talk about feelings: Invite your child to share what they are excited about and what might worry them.

Naming emotions helps children manage them.

4. Offer sensory breaks: Some children need movement, deep pressure hugs, or quiet corners to calm and focus. Watch for your child’s preferences and build them into the day.

5. Celebrate effort, not just outcome: Praise your child’s persistence and problem-solving rather than focusing only on achievements.

When to seek help If you notice ongoing difficulties, such as a child who is very anxious, struggles to follow routines, or has trouble keeping up with peers, it may be helpful to consult an occupational therapist, speech therapist, or educational psychologist. Early intervention can give your child the skills and confidence they need to thrive.

The Future of Midlands Living WORDS TIM JOHNSON

O

ne of the most fascinating things about living in the Midlands at the moment is watching how the area continues to grow while still trying to hold onto its rural heart. As someone involved in tourism, education and the property space, I’ve had countless conversations with locals, farmers and developers about where the Midlands is heading. And while development is certainly on the rise with new homes, retail pockets and commercial nodes, I’m increasingly convinced that the region will never become overdeveloped in the way we’ve seen further down the North Coast.

Why? Because in the Midlands, farmland isn’t just land. It’s heritage, livelihood and, quite frankly, too valuable to simply convert into housing.

Much of the Midlands’ agricultural land is exceptionally productive, with dairy, beef, timber, and crops forming the backbone of our local economy. Farmers here aren’t sitting on unused soil. They have successful, generational operations. Converting this kind of land into residential estates is, in many cases, neither practical nor desirable.

Add to that the patchwork of conservancies, wetlands, river corridors, hiking trails, golf courses, schools and recreational pockets that form natural buffers, and it becomes clear that the Midlands landscape has built-in protection against the kind of rapid urban sprawl we’ve witnessed elsewhere.

Nottingham Road, in particular, is surrounded by high-value farmland. This creates a natural boundary that limits large-scale expansion.

The village might fill in and densify modestly over time, but it will never stretch endlessly outward.

That’s not to say development isn’t happening; it absolutely is, but it’s happening where it

makes the most sense. Towns like Hilton and Howick are already seeing more significant urbanisation.

The Hilton College Road corridor from the N3 is transforming quickly, with estates, schools, religious, and health-related developments taking shape.

Similarly, the stretch between Howick and Karkloof is evolving into a more integrated residential and recreational precinct.

These areas sit close to major transport routes, have larger populations, and offer logical points for expansion. The growth fills a need, and the infrastructure is better placed for it. Of course, there are still servicing and infrastructural challenges to be considered, such as water, electricity, refuse and roads, but as with many other regions, these are likely to be resolved over time.

The Midlands will therefore continue to attract new residents due to the strength of its lifestyle metrics.

Access to excellent healthcare, strong schooling options, good transport links and an increasingly entrepreneurial commercial environment make the region extremely appealing. People aren’t only looking for homes, they’re looking for community, nature, safety, and a more intentional way of living.

The Midlands offers that in abundance, and as long as development is done thoughtfully and without compromising the true nature and value of what makes the area so special, we will continue to live in a wonderful place, albeit with access to a few more of the conveniences enjoyed by larger urban centres.
