often wonder what it must have felt like to live in the late 17th or 18th centuries, navigating a world shifting in ways both thrilling and unsettling. Though I haven’t personally read letters from that time, I imagine their sentiments would echo our own—grappling with rapid change, new technologies, and challenges that sometimes seem too vast to comprehend. The world has always been evolving, yet some things remain constant: our need for connection, a sense of belonging, and moments of tranquillity amidst the chaos.
The Midlands feels like that sanctuary. Not without its own challenges, but in an era where the global conversation is loud and often overwhelming, finding peace in our surroundings and anchoring ourselves in the community has never been more important—or more possible—than it is here. There is something cathartic about focussing on what is close to us— our homes, our neighbours, and our landscapes. We may not have the power to change the world overnight, but we can nurture and strengthen the spaces we inhabit and the people we share them with.
This edition of The Midlands magazine is a celebration of exactly that. We meet the Manley family, who have lovingly restored The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, blending history with hospitality. We also highlight
conservation pioneer David Cook, whose lifelong commitment to protecting wildlife is a reminder of the profound impact a single individual can have. And in our cover feature, we explore the newly established Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve—a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites with a shared purpose.
As we mark our 30th edition, I’m reminded of one of my favourite quotes from Tony Robbins: “Repetition is the mother of all skill.” Over the past 30 editions, we have put together and distributed 300,000 copies of this magazine, each one carrying stories of the Midlands—its people, its places, its traditions, and its evolving identity. It is a privilege to share these stories with you, and we are deeply grateful for your support as you have joined us and embraced The Midlands magazine.
I hope you enjoy this edition and its stories, whether you’re reading it with a cup of coffee on a misty Midlands morning or flipping through it while taking a break from the bustle of daily life. Here’s to many more editions, many more stories, and many more moments of connection.

Fable Eatery. I spent a couple of weeks in Napoli, Italy when I swam my third World Student Games and fell in love with Neapolitan Style Pizza. Fable just makes me feel like I’m back there.
TELL US ABOUT A HIDDEN GEM.
I’m not sure if it’s a hidden gem, but my girlfriend and I have a thing: if we are ever driving up the Meander, we stop at Treatery, Yard 41 for a peanut butter and honey milkshake. It’s not on the menu so you didn’t hear it from me.

The Power of Play
It is often understood that the simplest of activities could have the most profound impact. One such activity—play—is not only a source of joy but an essential part of emotional healing and personal growth, no matter our age. This is a truth that many people, young and old, are beginning to discover: play holds the power to heal, connect, and nurture.
For children, play can be more than just an enjoyable pastime. It can be a vital tool for emotional expression and processing. Whether through creative activities, roleplaying, or engagement, play allows children to explore their inner world in a way that words alone often cannot. It can offer a safe space to work through life’s challenges, build resilience, and develop social skills.
Play is equally important for adults. As we grow older, responsibilities and stress can sometimes cause us to forget the joy that play brings. When we engage in playful activities, we can connect to a sense of well-being. It is often through play that we rediscover the lightness and joy that can help us navigate the most challenging times.
The power of play is beautifully illustrated through Obie’s story, a therapeutic companion at Happy Hearts who has become a symbol of resilience and healing. Obie’s journey is a testament to the importance of play in recovery. After suffering a traumatic brain injury that left him in a coma for three days
as a young puppy, his path to recovery was uncertain. In spite of the encouragement for rest and limited activity, Obie’s recovery was largely driven by play.
Obie’s natural instinct for play, both with his siblings and later with people, became an essential part of his healing. His recovery journey was largely thanks to his ability to engage in play. It gave him the strength, motivation, and confidence to overcome the odds.
Today, Obie works with children at Happy Hearts, and his story continues to inspire. He has an innate ability to offer comfort and healing, bringing joy and empathy to those around him. It teaches us not only how to overcome obstacles but also how to thrive in the face of adversity.
Obie’s story, and the healing power of play, reminds us all that recovery—whether from injury, trauma, or life’s daily struggles—requires more than just patience and time. It requires play, creativity, and connection. Through these playful moments, we too could find the strength to heal and grow.
When we engage in playful activities, we can connect to a sense of well-being

THE SOURCE OF LIFE
Only a short distance from The Midlands, discover the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve; with a commitment to community development and socio-economic upliftment and fabulous places to stay and relax and enjoy nature right on your doorstep.
WORDS LIAM KING
In 2018, a few neighbours in the Putterill Valley came up with a dream of combining their properties into a joint nature reserve. That dream evolved from an idea to a plan, and finally, as of the 18th of April 2024, a reality. Comprising 6,500 hectares, the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve (NDNR) is KwaZulu-Natal’s newest nature reserve, with The Cavern, Montusi Mountain Lodge and Sungubala Eco Camp as founding members, marking a significant conservation achievement across southern Africa. The establishment of the NDNR is a truly collaborative effort, representing the sweat and toil of various actors, ranging from small private landowners all the way to the World Wildlife Fund. It also represents a giant leap ahead in the consolidation of various tracts of the Drakensberg into a single conservation corridor, linking Sterkfontein Nature Reserve in the Free State with the MalotiDrakensberg Park in KwaZulu-Natal, the latter also being a World Heritage Site.
The NDNR has four primary objectives; conserve animal species and habitats, enhance regional water security, preserve the area’s rich cultural heritage, and to further socio-economic upliftment in the local community. On the conservation front, the NDNR is home to several species of antelope, including the majestic Eland, as well as other mammals, a rich diversity of bird life (including the extremely rare bearded vulture), and predators like the spotted hyena and the elusive leopard. The story of the region’s Eland population is particularly symbolic. The “last Eland” in the area was supposedly shot in the late 1940s because the old bull had become a nuisance on the nearby Tugela Gorge walking path. Years later, the species was reintroduced in the Sterkfontein Nature
Reserve, and has since made a steady recovery. Today, free-roaming herds of over 150 Eland can be seen in the NDNR. That is the power of conservation. It is also the reason the members of the NDNR chose this majestic creature as the reserve’s logo, inspired by the original bushman painting of an Eland found in Cannibal Cavern, situated within the reserve. The painting itself, like the bushmen culture that produced it, has unfortunately faded away over time. As it does so, it reminds us of the importance of preserving and conserving.
The reserve encompasses sweeping mountain ranges (in fact, it is one of the largest Mountain Protected Areas in southern Africa), lush grasslands, crystalclear streams, and rivers. Grasslands across South Africa are under threat, with fewer than 3% of grassland biomes in the country currently being under formal conservation. These grasslands are vital for biodiversity and also serve to absorb the high levels of rainfall that the eastern part of South Africa enjoys. The Drakensberg region is the primary source of water in southern Africa, making conservation of this precious resource crucial for the continent’s habitability. The NDNR aims to place an emphasis on water security, as most of the water which flows through the reserve eventually feeds the Tugela River, the vein of KwaZulu-Natal, carrying life to millions of people across the province.
Unique to the NDNR is its fusion of natural beauty and conservation goals with its rich historical and cultural significance. Ancient human settlement in the area is evinced by bushman rock art to be found within the NDNR. Although some Drakensberg rock art is modern (dating only back to
the 19th century), there is also rock art in the region which dates back over 3000 years. Conserving this space therefore also entails conserving one of South Africa’s (and the world’s) rich sources of ancient art and spirituality. As a major tourist destination in the area, members of the NDNR constitute key actors in employment and socio-economic upliftment for an otherwise poor part of the country.
Members of the local community can look forward not only to jobs and incomes but also to being part of a collaborative conservation initiative, having the opportunity to provide input which will filter into the management and running of the reserve itself. Their three accommodation offerings within this area include The Cavern, Montusi Mountain Lodge, and Sungubala Eco Camp, all of which enhance the local community and attract visitors from near and far.
Like the dirt roads of the Northern Drakensberg, the road ahead for the NDNR also has its bumps and potholes. Poaching of game (especially of species recognised as endangered) poses a major challenge, as does arson, soil erosion, and alien vegetation control. However, as with those testy dirt tracks, with enough determination the destination can still be reached. And what is that destination? The preservation of the natural, cultural, and economic resources in this pristine part of the country in perpetuity, not only for the enjoyment and upliftment of ourselves but for all generations to come.

Manley Family the Meet
Hospitality and Heart at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm
PLESSIS
Originally from Johannesburg, the Manley family moved to Winterskloof, Hilton, at the end of 2001, when Mark Manley started work in Pietermaritzburg. Mark and his wife Lindy fell in love with The Knoll when they were scouting properties in the area and bought it. At that time, it had stood in a state of disrepair and dereliction for many years.
“There were sawmills on the front verandah and down in the stone barn, and there were just piles of rubbish and all that sort of stuff, and goats and cows in the main house, rotten floorboards, leaking roofs, and no electricity. It was chaos,” explained Chris, Mark’s son, who now runs the guesthouse and farm, “But my parents saw the potential of what it could be for a family home.” The family slowly built it up over the years, from living in one of the rooms to hosting friends from near and far. They eventually converted one of the outbuildings, now called Creamery Cottage, as the first available accommodation around 2005/2006. Several other accommodation suites followed suit from
existing buildings on the farm, and soon the guesthouse started offering more, from music events, like MiTH (Music in the Hills) to weddings, and a restaurant from 2020-2024.
Did you know The Knoll Historic Guest Farm dates back to the 1830s? It had several owners over the centuries and served as a family home, school, hotel, country estate, and a hunting lodge. The original farm, Groenekloof, was owned by John Philip Zietsman, the Landros of the republic. To settle a debt, he divided up the farm and sold portions of it. The remaining 250 acres, including the farmhouse, was bought by John Ireland and renamed Bloomfield Height after his mother. At this time it was a trading post and hotel for transport riders until 1898, the year John Ireland passed on.
The next owner was Mrs Augusta Boden, who lived there until 1925 and converted it into St Peters School from around 1915 to 1918. Mrs Boden continued to live there with her daughter Gwen and eventually moved to England. Somewhere during this time, the farm was named The Knoll.
David Hendrie was the next owner. He was originally from Scotland and immigrated to South Africa, Natal in 1902. He worked for the Natal Government Railways and was a prestigious railway engineer. Interestingly, during this time, Jan Smuts stayed at The Knoll on several occasions when he travelled via the White Train that would stop over at Hilton Station. Hendrie’s children reportedly lived on the farm and built a Scottish-style farmhouse named “Inverknoll”. The property had gone from owner to owner without much maintenance in-between and it got to the point where it was just used for the space to run a sawmill.
Thanks to the Manley family, The Knoll and its history were revived, restored, and

remade into a working home that continues to stand today. Each family member brings their skills and passions to The Knoll, contributing their expertise to keep it running smoothly and graciously, with visits from modern-day thinkers, politicians, and artists. Before Chris became the general manager, he moved overseas for several years after varsity and returned in 2019 with his wife Melissa, who also grew up in the Midlands. They have two sons and are happily settled here. Chris runs the day-to-day aspects of The Knoll, including general maintenance, staffing, and events. Melissa is in charge of the marketing and social media, including helping with catering and recipe development for the events and functions.
Joshua Manley is a professional cricketer and lives overseas with his wife Abbi. He offers advice remotely on projects and strategies and gets involved in the farm whenever he visits. Megan Manley is a lawyer in Cape Town and she takes care of the legal aspects of The Knoll.
Chris’ parents still live on the property and are also involved. Lindy, who is now retired from teaching Zulu at Laddsworth Primary School, loves contributing to the maintenance and splendour of the gardens, including freshening up the rooms to make sure it’s spick and span for guests.
All family members are very involved with the decisions and directions the business takes, trying to find a brand balance of maintaining a down-to-earth, homely place for their guests, friends, and family while running a small business that satisfies needs, provides employment, and serves the community. They always focus on expanding their offerings and improving their guests’ experiences whether it’s upgrading their accommodations and facilities, upskilling their staff so they can have positive interactions and always be on the same page, or offering various events. While they no longer have a restaurant, in its place is a wedding and events venue, bar and basic food options, like sourdough pizza, Barn Burgers, butter chicken and more, all on offer for events like MiTH, dinner tribute shows, Friday sundowners, themed events, and private birthday parties.
The Knoll is like a home away from home for those who want to explore the Midlands and get a feel of what the countryside offers. Whether it’s a longterm stay or a day visit, there are activities available for everyone, from the exciting five-kilometre trail, enjoyed by walkers, runners, and mountain bikers, to the wide variety of bird life, the beautiful natural scenery, and so much more. Furthermore, guests can be transported back in time by having a historical stay at The Knoll, standing in the footsteps of those who came before.

Meet the
Chef
This Easter, indulge in a culinary adventure with our local chef JJ Pretorius! He shares two delectable dishes to make at home, and don’t worry, there is something sweet in the mix too!
You’re probably familiar with the esteemed Fordoun Farm in Nottingham Road. It had humble beginnings as a dairy farm in the mid-1800s and was converted into a hotel and spa, successfully run and managed by the Bates family for over 20 years. Part of the hotel is its fine dining restaurant, Skye Bistro, which caters to the whole family and accommodates various dietary needs and desires. Whether you’re having a big lunch or something simple, we asked Chef JJ Pretorius, what he thinks about Easter dining. He started at Skye Bistro in July 2024 and has been in the food industry since
1986, but his passion for food started well before then from his mother, a pastry chef, who taught him a lot of tips and tricks in the kitchen. He studied at Apex School of Professional Cookery through Sun International and received an International Certificate for Professional Cookery in 1993. He continued working for them for three years and after that various establishments throughout South Africa, including abroad in the cruise industry. He believes in good food that’s value for money, strives to stay on top of trends, and enjoys creating his own methods with the assistance of his dynamic team who are like family.
He shared, “It’s the first big gathering of the year since Christmas for most families and it’s an important time of the year in most kitchens where it can often get heated as all family members want to have their say as to what should be made and by whom. It’s great family interaction and the result is always rewarding as it reflects the true family spirit. Whether it would be brunch or lunch or dinner, it’s an important family affair, and it’s treated as such.”

Fordoun Kingklip Beurre Blanc
INGREDIENTS:
Fish:
• 250gm Kingklip fillet portion
• flour for dusting
• 15gm fish spice
• salt to taste
• black pepper to taste
• 25ml oil for grilling
• 20gm butter for grilling
• lemon wedge
• micro greens for garnish
Lemon Beurre Blanc Sauce:
• 125ml white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc)
• 20ml lemon juice
• 30ml heavy cream
• 2g shallots (finely minced)
• 112g cold unsalted butter (cut into 1-inch cubes)
• 1 pinch cayenne pepper
• salt to taste
Herbed Mash:
• 1 large potato boiled very soft +-200g
• 25g soft butter
• 10g chopped fresh thyme
• ground black pepper to taste
• salt to taste
• pinch of nutmeg
Seasonal Vegetables:
• whole baby carrot, peeled
• broccoli, cut into florets
• baby marrow, cut into round slices
• baby corn, cut in half lengthways
• 25g butter
• salt and pepper to taste
• veggie seasoning to taste
• 25g butter for sautéing
METHOD:
For the Fish:
1. Rinse the fish under cold clean running water, remove and pat dry with a paper towel. Season with spices of choice and dust lightly in flour. In a pan add the oil and butter and place on high heat on the stove. Add the fish and sear liberally on both sides, getting a nice nutty colour. Remove from the pan and place on an oven dish and put it in the oven at 180°C for about 12 minutes till cooked through.
For the Lemon Beurre Blanc:
1. Place wine, lemon juice, cream, and shallots in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer until liquid is reduced by about 75%, 4 to 5 minutes.
2. Reduce heat to the lowest setting and whisk in two cubes of butter. Keep butter moving until it completely melts. Add a few more cubes, whisking continuously so butter emulsifies into wine-lemon juice mixture.
3. Continue to add remaining butter, a few cubes at a time, until sauce has a thick, luxurious texture, 4 to 6 minutes.
4. Remove the saucepan from heat. Season with cayenne pepper and salt.
Herbed Mash:
1. Peel and boil the potato until soft.
2. Pour off excess water and mash the potato in the same skillet, add in the butter, season to taste, and add in the fresh chopped herbs. Set aside.
Seasonal Vegetables:
1. In a skillet, bring water to the boil and quickly blanch your vegetables for about two minutes till just al dente.
2. Remove from boiling water and rinse in ice water to stop the cooking process.
3. In a separate pan, melt the butter and when it’s bubbling add the blanched vegetables, keep tossing in the hot butter till it starts to brown, season with salt, pepper, and veggie seasoning.
Plating:
1. On a hot plate of choice, add a generous dollop of the herbed mash, and a generous portion of the seasonal vegetables.
2. Top the mash with the brilled/baked Kingklip, garnish with the lemon wedge and the Lemon Beurre Blanc.
3. Finish with the micro herbs and enjoy.
A note from the chef:
Chocolate Fondant
INGREDIENTS:
• 50g melted butter, for brushing
• cocoa powder, for dusting
• 200g good-quality dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces
• 200g butter, in small pieces
• 200g golden caster sugar
• 4 eggs and 4 yolks
• 200g plain flour
METHOD:
1. First, get your moulds ready. Using upward strokes, heavily brush melted butter (use 50g in total) all over the inside of the pudding moulds. Place the mould in the fridge or freezer. Brush more melted butter over the chilled butter, then add a good spoonful of cocoa powder into the mould. Tip the mould so the powder completely coats the butter. Tap any excess cocoa back into the jar, then repeat with the next mould.
2. Place a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, then slowly melt 200g good-quality dark chocolate and 200g butter, both chopped into small pieces, together. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for about 10 minutes.
3. In a separate bowl whisk four eggs and four egg yolks together with 200g golden caster sugar until thick and pale and the whisk leaves a trail; use an electric whisk if you want. Sift 200g plain flour into the eggs, then beat together.
4. Pour the melted chocolate into the egg mixture in thirds, beating well between each addition, until all the chocolate is added and the mixture is completely combined to a loose cake batter.
5. Tip the fondant batter into a jug, then evenly divide between the moulds. The fondants can now be frozen for up to a month and cooked from frozen. Chill for at least 20 minutes or up to the night before. To bake from frozen, simply carry on as stated, adding five minutes more to the cooking time.
6. Heat oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Place the fondants on a baking tray,
then cook for 10-12 minutes until the tops have formed a crust and they are starting to come away from the sides of their moulds. Remove from the oven, then leave to sit for one minute before turning out.
7. Loosen the fondants by moving the tops very gently so they come away from the sides, easing them out of the moulds. Tip each fondant slightly onto your hand so you know it has come away, then tip back into the mould ready to plate up.
8. Starting from the middle of each plate, squeeze a spiral of caramel sauce—do all the plates you need before you go on to the next stage.
9. Sit a fondant in the middle of each plate. Using a large spoon dipped in hot water, scoop a ‘quenelle’ of ice cream.
10. Carefully place the ice cream on top of the fondant, then serve immediately. Repeat with the rest of the fondants.

A Spotlight on Inspiring Schools Shaping Future Leaders
Faith Compassion Courage
As Epworth embarks on its 127th year, it takes pride in its rich heritage, deeply rooted in its Christian, Methodist ethos and inspired by its motto: Faith Compassion Courage.
Over the years, the school and its pupils have achieved significant growth, excelling in all areas: academics, sport and performing arts. However, Epworth’s greatest accomplishment lies in
empowering its pupils to live meaningful, well-balanced lives, equipping them to confidently face future challenges.
This year, Epworth looks forward to utilising its new heated training swimming pool, an additional swimming facility designed to strengthen its competitive swimming programme and ensure that all pupils are water safe. In the high school, Epworth is celebrating 25 years of dance,
proudly marking its legacy as the first girls’ school to establish a dance company in 2000.
The recent upgrades to the school’s boarding facilities, coupled with the introduction of prep school boarding, set a positive tone for the year ahead.
60 Years of Opportunities
Treverton proudly celebrates 60 years of faith, adventure, education and opportunities. Staying true to our foundation, we still offer the same “allrounded, balanced, quality education based on a strong Christian foundation”.
We are a school that encourages resilience through trying, failing and trying again, creating a future generation that will thrive in the changing landscape of career choices. A school comprised of families from near and far who value the development of soft and hard skills in a safe, healthy, natural environment without the pressures of the city. A school where nurturing of the children in our care by our dedicated staff to find their own paths and passions at their own pace, building self-confidence and taking children out of their shells.
A school deeply founded on the Christian faith lived out daily and visible in how we steward our resources and select our partners. A school where opportunities exist in every facet, around every corner,
on every page and in every encounter. Through 2024 and 2025 our staff and students have lived out these mantra’s, showing success in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage and beyond, a quick look over our social media channels will attest to this.
Treverton has rounded off 60 years of education on a positive note with not only a 100% pass rate, 88% of our Matric Group achieved a Bachelor’s Pass. We are able to celebrate with a number of our students who have achieved provincial and national representations in non-traditional sporting codes including equestrian, triathlon, motor-cross, and angling. Other stand out achievements include a 1st place overall by a Grade 11 student in Toastmasters and a 5th place in a national coding Olympiad.
We are returning more and more towards our traditions and rekindling our spirit of what it means to be a Trevertonian. We have initiatives in place to host more of our Old Trevertonians, reconnecting them with the school and each other. We have
become known to be good hosts, and as a result, we have been chosen as the venue for the 2025 Spar Ladies Hockey Tournament. In addition, we have other opportunities we would like to invite you to our campus for, including our Open Day Sleepover (Grade 6 & 7) on 7-8 March, our Founders Day on 17 May, Golf Day on 20 August (Gowrie Golf Club), and Challenge Camp (Grade 6) on 25-26 October.
Come and see what opportunities Treverton has for you and your family.

Growth with Purpose, Education with Impact
In just two years, Carlyle College has evolved from a promising educational vision into a thriving independent school redefining learning in the KZN Midlands. Since 2023, our growth has been remarkable—not just in student numbers but in the depth of our academic offering, co-curricular opportunities, and forwardthinking approach to education.
One of our most exciting milestones has been the expansion into dedicated classrooms for every grade. This achievement is a testament to the increasing demand for a progressive education that balances academics with real-world relevance. We’ve also welcomed a significant number of new educators, forming a 2025 team with a wealth of experience, ready to challenge outdated curricula with innovation and passion.
Beyond academics, Carlyle College has been making a name for itself in sport and co-curricular activities. With the arrival of Colin Hulett, our Head of Sport and Co-Curricular, we’ve begun implementing a fresh, dynamic sports strategy that not only benefits our students but also extends into the wider Nottingham Road community. Colin has been consulting with us from the UK and will be relocating to Nottingham Road in the second term.
Our boarding offering, set to open in 2026, is already attracting interest from families
who value both our nurturing environment and the unparalleled opportunity for young students to develop independence and resilience. Meanwhile, new educational initiatives are providing students with real-world exposure to environmental conservation, aviation, and entrepreneurial thinking—ensuring that learning extends beyond the classroom and into meaningful, practical experiences.
We are actively forging relationships with industry leaders and businesses, giving students valuable exposure and opening doors to a world of opportunity. By the time they leave our gates, they will have
the skills and confidence to pursue their passions with purpose.
Carlyle College’s growth isn’t just about numbers—it’s about impact. We’re not simply expanding; we’re moving forward with purpose, ensuring that the education here is always relevant, engaging, and designed for the future.

All About Heart
St John’s Diocesan School for Girls is an independent day and boarding school situated in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, for girls from Grade RR to Grade 12. At St John’s D.S.G., our difference is all about heart. Individually and collectively, our girls grow to become kind, courageous and well-rounded. We believe in providing an enriching, balanced education, anchored in God, that empowers our girls to flourish. Our safe, nurturing environment gives them the love and encouragement they need to become resilient and emotionally intelligent women.
Five years ago, we recognised the need for a transformative space in our Junior School to support our evolving teaching methods, including IBL (inquiry-based learning), coding and robotics. After careful planning and consultation with professionals and schools nationwide, we set work to designing and implementing our Innovation Centre which will officially open at the start of Term 2, 2025.
Previously housing the Grade R, RR, Robotics, and Multipurpose classrooms, this area is being transformed into a cutting-edge learning hub, which will include:
Robotics Lab: A dedicated space for coding, robotics, and hands-on STEM activities. Computer Lab: Upgraded facilities to enhance digital learning.
Library: A modern, flexible learning environment fostering research and reading.
Makerspace: Featuring a fully functional kitchen for experiments and cooking, alongside tools for creative projects.
The centre is designed with collaborative zones and mobile furniture to support flexible learning setups. This is what the future of education looks like—a place where girls can innovate, imagine, investigate, and invent.
While we embrace innovation, our core remains steadfast: our anchor in Christ, our school values, and our focus on realising the holistic potential of every girl.

129 Years Dedicated to Holism
In an era marked by an educational focus on a single area of endeavour—academic, sporting, or cultural—Michaelhouse remains committed to its founder’s vision: to make not accountants, not clerks, not clergymen, but men; men of understanding, thought and culture.
2024 was a memorable year with members of the school’s innovative Grade 9 Future Fit Programme taking the honours in the Economist’s global Leadership for Change competition, and our Class of 2024 achieving a 100% Bachelor’s Pass rate being highlights of the academic calendar. Michaelhouse boys continued to attract the attention of the best universities in South Africa and internationally with Luke Kaufmann, our Second Prefect of 2024, earning a place at the University of Cambridge to read History and Politics.
On the playing fields, Michaelhouse’s renowned culture of participation continued to ensure that more sports teams were fielded than most schools in the province with many athletes plying their skills at provincial and national levels. Old Boys Pierre and Jean van der Westhuyzen lead the charge with a haul of medals at the Paris Olympics. An ethos of community service remains a cornerstone of the Michaelhouse education with many boys demonstrating sensitivity and activism in
response to a raft of social plights. The Arts were in the spotlight on stages and arenas where our debaters, actors, and musicians wowed audiences across the country.
To round off a spectacular year, Michaelhouse was named the only South African school to be included in Londonbased Spear’s Magazine “Top 100 Schools in the World” index.
Looking forward to the future, 2025 will mark the completion of the significant project of extending the school’s chapel. Mr Bart Wielenga who has accumulated a wealth of experience in school leadership and who currently holds the position of
of Blundell’s school in the United Kingdom, will be returning to South Africa in June of 2026 to assume the mantle of Rector.
It has always been our belief that a boy’s time at senior school is as much about discovering his niche in life as having the freedom, opportunity, and encouragement to explore it and become the best that he can be, and Michaelhouse remains committed to providing world-class facilities and pastoral care to ensure these ideals of holism.

Mom and daughter team Fay and Megan have built Image Insured to empower people to look their best, which in turn, brings a new sense of self-worth and healthy selfesteem.
The business was established 40 years ago, when Fay trained as an Image Consultant with an international Canadian company called Colours in Harmony, and Megan was just a baby. As the youngest of five girls and growing up on a farm, Fay acknowledged that she had absolutely no idea how to look good. Then one day, she had her colours done and said she started getting compliments for the first time in her life!
After Megan completed her marketing degree, she went on to win Miss South Africa in 2006, and then joined her mom in business and together they started Image Insured. The business
has grown from strength to strength over the years and they now have a dynamic team of staff that help them run their online store and their beautiful shop in Kloof.
"We offer online consults to our clients all over the world, and we also have clients who fly to us from all over South Africa on a weekly basis, because we really do offer one of the best services out there!" says Megan.
“For most of us trying to look good is simply ‘guesswork’, and we have found that most people spend a fortune on wrong colour clothing, hair and makeup, wasting a lot of money,” says Fay.
"A consultation with us is simply the price of one bad mistake and you’re on track forever!"
Finding out what colour your hair should be is one of the main reasons clients book to see Image Insured. For most people it is just guesswork, but after a Colour Analysis, you will find out exactly what colour and style your hair should be to suit your unique skin tone and face shape. It is life changing and can take years off of your look simply by tweaking one or two things.
"Most people just wear the colours they like, but sadly we have found that about 80% of the time, colours that people ‘like’ don't actually suit them and you have to train yourself to like the colours that work for you," Megan explains. Finding out your seasonal colour palette is all dependent on the undertone to your skin and your eye colour.
After Before
Image Insured helps each client find out the exact niche of colours that suits them without overpowering them or washing them out. They also offer a figure analysis where they teach you the correct styles to wear for your particular body shape plus a wardrobe analysis and shopping spree option for those clients who want a complete wardrobe overhaul.
Once you have had a life changing consultation with Image Insured, you can then shop your 'season' in their beautiful shop in Kloof or online. Each item of clothing is carefully designed by Fay and Megan and produced locally in Durban. It is the first colour coordinated clothing range in the country where each style is produced in a colour to suit each different season.
The best news is—a consultation is not as expensive as you would think!
Celebrating 30 Editions Celebrating 30 Editions
Every business has a story—and how this magazine came about is no different! FabMags, a KZN proud magazine publishing business started in 2006—not long after that a young girl with a big spunk joined our sales team—she later got married and was pregnant with her first child when she left us.
10 years later—after many years of keeping in touch—Brita popped me an email over the Christmas period, if I remember correctly, and struck up a wild
conversation/thought, and said “Hey, I have moved to the Midlands and would love to start a magazine here”—unbeknownst to her, Justin and I had been speaking about doing exactly that but wanted to find the right person “on the ground” to join us and launch it. Right there with that one email, our prayers were answered. The Midlands magazine was launched and by September 2019 the first magazine was out.
And here we are 30 editions later and still telling fantastic stories about the people and business! Our son Ceagan has joined
the family business and took over the Midlands area from Brita when she went full-time into all things schooling at Carlyle College. We love what we do—it takes a village and a great team to produce the amount of magazines that we do, that covers Ballito, Umhlanga, South Coast, Hillcrest right up to, yes, you guessed it, the fabulous Midlands area. An area absolutely unique to KZN, with so much history, the only place that we can really say “gets cold” and with a wonderful mix of farming, business, and amazing people! We love being a part of it!

Thonga Beach UnpARALLELED
WORDS LORINDA SCOTT
One word: SPECTACULAR! This unique destination is more than worth the drive to get there. The journey to Thonga isn’t easy as the last 1.5 hours drive is on a sandy, bumpy road at a slow speed. The hotel is the only lodging for miles and miles in a protected area. The location is truly unique, with only 12 thatched rooms for guests, so the privacy is unparalleled. (At arrival, we changed our booking from a twonight to a three-night stay.)
The rooms are gorgeous with modern, lovely bathrooms, and housekeeping is done twice daily. There are two medium-sized pools with loungers and chairs, and a wooden sun deck just above the beach, which has wonderful views. You cannot view the sea from the dining areas or the pools, but we could glimpse it from our room. This is because the forest isn’t cut back and you can hardly
see any of the lodge from the beach. It’s a remarkable place. The food is simply superb, so fresh, tasty, there are daily menus to choose from and a wide range of options, as always, too much food, but what I do love is that meals are generous but healthy, a good variety and not excessive in size (think a light starter, main and dessert for each meal type) and best of all it is fully included in the cost. The beach, which runs all the way to Mozambique, is stunning. We loved walking along the seemingly endless beach each day and rarely bumped into another guest.
There are daily activities offered, like snorkelling and SCUBA diving, turtle tracking, kayaking, birding, whale watching, dolphins, forest walks, swimming, and watching iconic sunsets with a sundowner. They even have a beach centre with all kinds of beach stuff you can borrow during your stay. Unfortunately, we were on a tight
schedule of relaxation during our stay, so we didn’t have a lot of time to enjoy all of these activities. We booked the ‘turtle experience’ and were lucky enough to sit with three Loggerhead turtles while they lay eggs, we also saw one coming out of the water and another going in, so all in all a ‘busy’ night. This experience again is a profound one, seeing a water animal drag its now heavy body through sand and then dig a deep hole for about 30 minutes before laying 80-100 eggs, pure exhaustion and then drag itself back into the water, ABSOLUTELY worth the money and getting back after 11 p.m. Sadly, we did not get a glimpse of the huge and wondrous Leatherback turtle! (Maybe next time.)
The very best part of the lodge is the extremely professional, helpful,
knowledgeable, and delightful staff, most of which come from the local community, they bend over backwards to accommodate requests and make each experience the best it can be. The staff arranged a candle-lit dinner on the deck for us one evening, it was incredible.
There is no evening entertainment, no TV, and limited connection, creating the perfect escape. Oh, I forgot the spa! One of the best massages I’ve had and they offer a variety of services, with no reservations necessary in advance of your stay.
Finally, the conservation and community work done by this lodge and its associated Isibindi Foundation is impressive and is making a profound impact on the local community and the broader ecosystem. We loved our stay here and hope to visit again someday.

his incredible journey to life. In its pages, he takes readers from his childhood in wartime Pietermaritzburg to his school days at Maritzburg College, his army service in the Royal Natal Carbineers, and his explorations of Southern Africa’s most treasured game reserves and parks.
With 30 years of service in the Natal Parks Board, he held various positions in both the Drakensberg and Zululand, ultimately rising to the rank of Deputy Director. Retirement, however, was only a technicality. A move to Tulbagh in the Cape saw him and his wife, Julie, run a private safari business and a charming B&B. Eventually, Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal called him home, where he continued leading safaris into Zululand.
Perhaps one of his most significant chapters unfolded during his nine years working alongside his old friend and mentor, Dr Ian Player. Together, they and a small group of dedicated conservationists formed The Conservation Imperative, an initiative aimed at combating the rampant poaching of white rhinos. His passion for conservation remains undiminished, and he firmly believes that South Africa must adopt a far more radical approach to saving its wildlife heritage before it is too late.

Adventure awaits at Land Rover Pietermaritzburg.
he more time we spend with the Land Rover Defender, the more we realise that this is one of the most versatile, familyfocussed vehicles around. I’ve always said that the Defender seems to take every activity in its stride, enthusiastically and comfortably, but to call this a jack-of-all-trades undermines the exceptional character of this handsome SUV.
So it was good day when the new dealer principal of Land Rover Pietermaritzburg, Bradley Samuel invited me to visit the dealership to look at their new range of Defenders including the majestic 130.
Having spent a fair amount of time with both the 90 & 110 Defender, the sheer size of the 130 surprises me every time. At over 5300mm long and almost 2m wide, this Defender makes your family sized SUV seem almost comical. But spend the day with it and you’ll be astonished at how easy it is to live with this imposing 8 seater.
What I love most about the Defender is that the interior echoes the rugged durability of the exterior. This is seen so clearly in the multitude of pre-owned Defenders at Land Rover Pietermaritzburg, all with interiors that look as good as new, showcasing the level of thought given to the quality of components and materials.
Spending some time in the dealership, you start to see and feel the energy that Bradley has brought to this well established facility. It genuinely feels like the sort of dealership that is proud to showcase an iconic brand like Land Rover. Bradley spoke briefly about the plans for the dealership and how he wants to bring the SMG & Land Rover brands to places like the Midlands and northern KZN.
The Land Rover Defender is the ultimate vehicle for adventure whether you like the dusty roads of the African bush or the chilly highlands of the Drakensberg.
After sales support is also high on his agenda, with a total restructure of the service department and a desire to become the more service orientated dealership in the network.
With a host of national awards behind his back, Bradley has certainly injected a sense of pride and enthusiasm into the dealership and this shows in the energy and smiles of the experienced team of sales and service specialists.
2025 Looks to be an exciting year for the Land Rover brand and a very productive one for the Pietermaritzburg dealership in particular. With a host of new models on the horizon and some tailormade offers for existing models like the Defender, Bradley and his team are ready to make waves in the KZN interior bringing the level of professionalism that this iconic brand deserves.
Much like the Defender, Land Rover Pietermaritzburg is so much more than a jack-of-all-trades. They believe in being nothing less that exceptional in every department. With that level of passion and the heritage of the Land Rover brand behind them, this is definitely a dealership to take seriously.
You can visit the dealership at the Bird Sanctuary, 9 Armitage Road in Pietermaritzburg or call them on 033 897 8860.

The Curse of the Rushing Woman
WORDS KERI STRACHAN
One in three South African women are in the menopause transition, at any given time dealing with between 10 and 12 symptoms impacting their well-being—hot flushes, joint pain, headaches, mood swings, anxiety, irritability, tiredness, insomnia, and brain fog. But what if we are just living in an environment that is a mismatch to what was intended, and what if in the right environment, women would be free of these symptoms entirely?
Our modern environment includes chronic stress, poor sleep, artificial light at night, EMFs from Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, processed foods, and endocrine disruptors and toxins like pesticides, phthalates, and plastics. All of which impact our mitochondrial health; we have lost our metabolic flexibility.
We think we are managing just fine, but actually we are metabolically dysfunctional. We should mostly burn fat, and easily switch between burning carbs and fat, fuelling the entire body with a steady flow of energy. Instead, we are locked into carb burning, which increases our cravings, driving us to eat more often and eat to improve energy levels. Metabolic flexibility impacts every part of our bodies, gut health, immunity, heart, liver, and every cell of our body contains mitochondria, and these powerhouses are the solution to our metabolic health.
What we are missing while enduring these symptoms is that there is a superpower to menopause. During this transition, there is a downregulation of the amygdala which creates less reactivity, more emotional stability, greater confidence and greater inner peace. Many women find greater life contentment and increased empathy post-menopause.
The Rushing Woman syndrome explains that we are caught in fight or flight mode, with chronically high cortisol (leading to belly fat, increased blood glucose and waking at 2-3 am), which leads to high insulin levels, hence the common weight loss struggle. It’s definitely not anything to do with calories in versus calories out!
A lifestyle approach is needed to manage the hormones at play, a good place to start is with one of the following:
• Good quality sleep.
• Stress management.
• Avoiding processed foods and focusing on real foods with fibre, phytonutrients, and omega-3 fats.
• Support for gut health.
• Incorporating a fasting regime (i.e. eating less often) to produce ketones as a more favourable fuel, particularly for the brain and cognitive function.
• Strength training to increase muscle mass.
• Eating enough protein is VITAL.
• Including generous amounts of healthy Mediterranean fats, for example, extra virgin olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds.
• Getting healthy sun exposure to ensure optimal vitamin D levels.
This decline in hormones is a natural process and marks the next phase of our lives. It needs to be viewed as a moment of evolution and positive change where women can feel more attuned with their bodies than ever before, and to focus more on self-care, embracing the new season of life.

Why Thinking for Yourself Is In
WORDS TIM JOHNSON
Ever feel like you’re stuck on autopilot?
Simply going about your daily life with little conscious thought or deliberate decisionmaking? If so, you’re certainly not alone, but when routines, habits and even deep-seated paradigms take over our lives, they leave little room for introspection and intentional action. As a result, we often find ourselves making big decisions, like where to live, what school to send our children to, which career path to follow, or even which political party to support, simply because everyone else seems to be doing it.
When you make choices based on your own reasoning rather than following the crowd, you’re more likely to create a life that genuinely suits you. History is full of rebels who dared to think differently. Over the course of our history, countless philosophers, scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs, educators and more, have risked it all on ideas that defied conventional wisdom. Now, let’s be honest, thinking for yourself isn’t always a walk in the park.
Our brains are hardwired for social conformity, making it tempting to follow the herd or listen to the loudest naysayers. In school, when every classmate seems to be choosing the same major, it can feel risky to chart your own course. When buying a property, getting everyone’s often unsolicited opinion about what kind of lifestyle you should be living, can be confusing and counterproductive. Add to that our cognitive biases, like confirmation bias, which makes us favour information that already fits our beliefs, and it’s like being stuck on a never-ending loop of the same song. It’s familiar, but not necessarily the best soundtrack for your life. The truth, in my opinion, is that the path less
travelled can be unexpectedly rewarding. Venturing into the unknown might feel like stepping onto a stage without a script, but every misstep is an opportunity to learn. Your unique perspective could be the missing ingredient that turns an ordinary decision into a brilliant breakthrough.
So how can you start embracing your inner maverick? Firstly, question everything. If you find yourself following a decision just because “everyone’s doing it,” pause and ask, “Who really benefits from this?” Next, diversify your information sources. Avoid the echo chamber by reading widely and chatting with people who see the world differently. A little variety in your input is like adding spice to an otherwise bland recipe. When it comes to trusting your instincts, go ahead and listen, but don’t forget to verify. Your gut feelings can be a great guide, yet they work best when backed by reliable information and data. Finally, be prepared to stand alone sometimes. Sure, it might feel lonely at first, but remember, every great innovator was once an outsider. It’s better to be a bold original than a carbon copy of someone else’s success.
In a nutshell, independent thinking isn’t just about being contrarian for the sake of it, it’s about making decisions that align with your true self. So next time you’re faced with a big life choice, trust your instincts, do your homework, and dare to march to the beat of your own drum. After all, who wants to be just another face in the crowd when you can be the life of your own party?
The path less travelled can be unexpectedly rewarding.
