I

t’s that time of year again! Cue the Christmas cakes and mince pies. A season of money-spending and abandoning diets.

A season of scrambling and consolidating.

A season of closure. A time to look back. A time to look forward. A time to come to terms with being one year older and facing New Year’s Eve much sooner than last year. The 25th day of December pauses the mundane and ordinary.

It’s that momentous day of the year where those separated meet. Or those gone are missed. Or those present bring joy—while the presence of others brings strife. In the flurry of festivities, we’ll take a moment on Christmas Day—and a moment may be all that it is—to consider the past year of our lives.

Maybe our hearts will be heavy with grief. Or marred by many difficulties. Or lonely. Angry.

Fraught with relational angst. Maybe our hearts will be joyful and celebratory, marvelling at many blessings. Maybe simply content. Free.

Peace-filled. Whatever holds or takes up the most space in your heart, take some time to ponder. You may face this season alone or with those you love or dislike or, maybe, with those you have never met. We will cross paths with many people and each person carries a heart filled with much—just like yours.

In that moment, when we take stock, we’ll have a chance to make a choice. A choice to respond. Will we drown our darkness in drink, drugs, and debauchery? Will we try to win the affection and attention of our onlookers? Will we flamboyantly dish out flattery? Or revel in

rowdiness? Will we huddle together and feed on foolish talk and mouthfuls of gossip? Will we isolate ourselves and resist open, accepting arms? Will we soak in the sewer of resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness?

Or will we take a deep breath before we make our next move? Will we look beyond what we perceive and choose to “see” others? See them in their brokenness. See them in their pain. See beyond their façade and discover hidden hurts or longings. See the lost, the broken, the bitter, the “poor,” the “rich”. Will you choose to see those you make contact with for a moment, a minute, a morning or a month? The way we respond is a choice. Let go. Make amends. See the good. Love intentionally.

The walkway bridge into the centre is the perfect spot to take a few selfies with friends! Two restaurants face the MTB Park, Atasca, offering fine dining and a Portuguese menu; and Olive & Oil. Both have outdoor seating and are ideal for enjoying delicious food while soaking in the fresh air and sunshine. For the outdoor enthusiasts, sporting events are held at the MTB Park like the mountain biking XCO and XCC South African National Championship and several other cycling events.

The trails are also perfect for runners or walkers. Other events are held at the bottom of the MTB Park, which includes monthly outdoor movie nights, music and comedy events, and past food and wine

events. To supplement outdoor fitness, Virgin Active gym is located right next door to the Cascades centre and is a short saunter away, making fitness convenient for all. Apart from the fine dining at Atasca and Olive & Oil, there are a range of other restaurants and cafés to look out for, like Coffeeberry Café and Woolworths Café, both have seating facing the piazza area and are more casual. Spur, which welcomes the whole family and kids to play at their leisure; and Friendhouse, to satisfy that sushi craving or to try their delicious Asian menu.

The team at Cascades Lifestyle Centre also keeps active and loves charity work. They have several different drives aimed toward specific needs in or around the community.

Some of these include food, clothing, sanitary pads, and pet food drives, to name a few. They are currently doing a new or used toy drive to donate to organisations that will gift to children who would typically not get any toys on Christmas day.

The centre runs numerous competitions so look out for monthly shop and win with weekly draws where a charity of choice receives R4000 every week. There are exciting promotions every month, so keep an eye out for updates on the Facebook and Instagram pages. The Connect Kiosk with friendly staff is inside the centre just outside Royal Smokers where customers can learn more about upcoming competitions, apply for a Moms and Tots disk or simply ask a question. Gift cards are available at Centre Management.

Amenities include family toilets located inside the piazza and inside the centre.

Wheelchairs are available for customers who need them while shopping.

Additionally, with free Wi-Fi and a steady power supply, ample free, secured, covered, shaded, and disabled-friendly parking spaces, you can feel completely at ease spending as much time as you need at Cascades Lifestyle Centre.

Where a tennis court and swimming pool once stood, a dynamic playground has been created, designed to promote movement, motor skills, and imaginative play. The garden surrounding the house is home to three indigenous trees, which were transported from the main campus and are now thriving, providing shade and natural play areas for the girls.

Junior School Headmistress, Ms Wendy Laatz, says, “This is the home we envisioned for our Eaglets, and seeing it come to life has been truly magical.”

ou’ll never fall short of an adventure and scenic splendour here, from trail runs, and hikes, to vast fields, forests, and not to mention mountains!

There is plenty to choose from, but we have a few other spots to add to your next outing, such as the wonderful waterfalls scattered throughout. Here are a few you can choose from, from easy walks or more challenging hikes for diehard hikers.

Shelter Falls at Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve is the perfect entry-level hike.

It’s around one kilometre to the falls with only a few minor technical areas once you get closer to the falls, but nothing too serious. Also at Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve is the Cascades Falls. This is a suitable hike for the whole family. It’s short and can easily be combined with another hike. Or if you prefer to keep it short and sweet, stick around for a picnic and swim! Both hikes are R35pp and require light snacks, water, and a backpack. A more intermediate hike,

around four kilometres or less, is to the bottom of Howick Falls, also known as the Gorge Walk. Howick Falls is also named KwaNogqaza or “Place of the Tall One” due to its height, which measures 95 metres. A fun fact is that many people don’t know you can hike to the bottom of Howick Falls. While the top section is a bit messy to get through at first, beyond that is a gorgeous hiking trail and view waiting for you. This is best undertaken with a group. Entry is free. Did you know about the local legend at the bottom of Howick Falls? Many believe there’s a serpent-like creature called Inkanyamba. Sangomas often visit the site to pray and worship it.

For those looking for more of a challenge, the top of Grey Mares Tail Waterfall is a true hidden gem. The hike starts at Bushwillow Caravan Park in Karkloof. It’s around seven kilometres out and back. This is not suitable for beginners or those who are a bit on the unfit side, so discretion is advised. You will find some of the most fabulous views of the Karkloof and the water on the summit is clean and drinkable, a perfect refreshment after your hike! The entry fee is R50 at Bushwillow and things to pack include light snacks, water, sunscreen and a sunhat. It’s cautioned not to hike on rainy days as the trail can get slippery and muddy.

Once you’ve had your fill of the top of Grey Mares Tail waterfall, why not try the waterfall at the bottom? It’s a sixkilometre hike and easier than the hike up, however, be warned there are a lot of rocks to traverse before the waterfall.

The name of this waterfall originates from the way it flows and moves, which resembles a tail. This hike used to start at Shawswood Farm up the Karkloof road, but after a change of ownership, it’s advised to contact the owners beforehand.

WORDS KAI COATES Driven by their shared love for unconventional spaces and nostalgia, Jaqui and Jono are turning the Midlands into a vibrant street art destination through Jackal & Hide.

Making

Walls Talk J ackal & Hide founders, Jaqui Hiltermann and Jono Hornby, first met through family connections but only officially crossed paths three years ago, under what is now the BOOMTOWN Gallery. Though they had attempted to collaborate before, life had other plans. Following the civil unrest, Jaqui was struck by Jono’s proactive approach to getting things done, which resonated with her. Their shared passion for human geography and placemaking quickly bonded them. Initially, they aimed to keep their work separate, but collaboration felt natural, blending their lives and creative talents. Now, their work never stops - and neither does the fun.

Jaqui, what inspired you to move from academia to starting Jackal & Hide?

I fell in love with human geography through research on prison studies and Ivan Vladislavic’s writing. I always dreamed of doing a PhD, completing one in Media Studies, focusing on human geography and cultural studies. My nostalgia for place and memory is why I moved back to Hilton from Cape Town; these themes influence my writing and research. While I enjoyed lecturing, I wanted to pursue writing fulltime because that’s my passion. Through Jackal & Hide, Jono and I combine our skills and this allows me to have fun with writing. I have the best job in the world.

Jono, what was your first big “aha” moment when you realised that art could be more than just a personal passion?

I believe art and mark-making are innate in all of us—either encouraged or neglected

over time. For me, it was always clear that art was what I would do, and I would just find a way to make a living from it. Graffiti was my gateway drug into the subculture of public art and while I’ve worked in various creative fields, street art is where my heart is happiest.

It allows for beauty to exist in spite of neglect. It speaks to everyone, all at once, on a level playing field.

Why was it important for you to combine art with these unconventional, nostalgic spaces?

Nostalgia heightens every sense and gives places a story. Our role is to bring those stories to life through art and memory. The BOOMTOWN Gallery is special to us—it’s where we experienced our rebellious teenage years and where Jono began painting. We are obsessed with railway lines and tunnels and embrace the unconventional. The gallery celebrates women and their stories and shows that art belongs to everyone, not just in traditional galleries.

Street art, curated and displayed by artists for the public, has no price tag, and we aim to reveal hidden magic in everyday places.

How do you ensure that your projects and galleries resonate with people who may not traditionally engage with art galleries?

Art is for everyone, which is why street

art is so important. It’s not confined to private collections or galleries, and entrance is free. Street art reclaims public space from invasive advertising. Our projects tell stories about communities and individuals that resonate with locals and says, “We see you” and shows that your story matters. J. Edward Chamberlin’s quote, “If this is your land, where are your stories?” inspires us to create connections through place. Jackal & Hide add narrated stories via QR code to our murals, and our latest project, The BOOMTOWN Story Tour, brings these stories to life in the style of radio plays and podcasts.

What role has your community played in supporting your work, and how do you see Jackal & Hide giving back to those who’ve helped along the way?

Most of what we do is self-funded because we’re passionate about making the Midlands a global street art destination. For every street artist getting permission to paint walls is a bureaucratic mission, but we’re fortunate to have a supportive municipality. Matt Hogarty from Love Howick secured funds through the Lottoland’s Help ’n Dorp Competition, which helped start the BOOMTOWN Story Tour. Blake Kershaw (Hilton BuildIt) has donated very generous amounts of paint throughout the years. Scanning QR codes is a barrier to entry, as that’s how you access the stories, but we believe the BOOMTOWN

Story Tour will change that. We’re lucky to have Lelo Mncwango, Jono’s former mentee, as a support artist, while she expands and grows her career as a solo artist.

What message would you give to someone who doesn’t consider themselves an “art person” but might want to explore your work?

The magic of public art is that we all experience it differently as individuals. Art is about storytelling, and as storytellers, we are in service to the audience. We work hard to keep our work diverse and as far as possible, universal, always keeping our mantra front of mind. “Make it Nice”.

WEDGEWOOD Story, 25 years on

S

tarting from humble beginnings in a Midlands family kitchen, Wedgewood Nougat was an unlikely success story. In 1999, Gilly Walters was struggling to find purpose against a backdrop of her husband’s cancer diagnosis, and that was the year she stirred her first pot of soft honey nougat.

Ordinarily, Gilly was an exuberant force to be reckoned with, always quick to support others, generous to a fault, and ready to get her hands dirty. In the face of financial insecurity, Gilly’s tenacity of spirit was put to the test to pull her family through. In typical Gilly style, she rallied. With a strong sense of community and giving back, she held concerts at home to support a talented, concert pianist, Christopher Duigan, whom she had met at a local farmers’ market while she sold bread and cheese. Music Revival concerts became a regular occurrence at Wedgewood, the Walters’ family home. Gilly began feeding guests with innovative recipes that she had previously served at Touchwood Tea Garden, a little restaurant she created and ran on the family rose farm.

As the business grew, the small-batch production moved to its own stateof-the-art Makery on the Wedgewood Farm. Gilly’s sons united around her and helped grow her beloved nougat and biscuit recipes into the family business that it is today.

During the past 25 years, the Wedgewood team has grown, capturing the imagination of those who have joined it.

Sadly, Taffy passed away six years ago after 27 years of living with cancer. As Gilly says, “Taffy was the wings beneath my wings!”

Giving Back

After 25 years, there are some advantages to running a family business. Gilly’s son, Paul, continues to inject the family passion for conservation and community into the Wedgewood brand ethos.

“Wedgewood is more than just a cheque and balance sheet; it is our chance to give back to the planet and our community.”

For the past seven years, Wedgewood has been 100% plastic neutral, with a long-term goal of becoming an Earth Brand. Paul has created partnerships with sustainable bee-keepers and harvesters to ensure the finest, ethically sourced ingredients for Wedgewood’s handmade confectionery, biscuits, and ice-cream whilst supporting community initiatives, natural forestry, wildlife, and bee populations.

In 2019, Wedgewood launched their own Handmade Box Project which employs people from the local community who have conquered cognitive and physical challenges. With funds set aside through the 1% For the Planet initiative, Wedgewood supports various conservation projects through trusts such as Wildlife ACT.

The last of Gilly’s world first recipes was launched in 2019 at Piggly Wiggly, in the first Wedgewood’s Gifting & Hamper Emporium, showcasing her Nougat Ice-Cream; the world’s creamiest icecream. This month sees the launch of Wedgewood’s fifth Gifting & Hamper Emporium at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, adding to the existing ones in Parkhurst, Lourensford, Ballito, and Midlands.

The new stores, a vision of Gilly’s daughter-in-law, were imagined as a space for Wedgewood to share a moment of happiness with its customers through sampling and world-class service.

These stores capture Wedgewood’s personality and Gilly’s story through a visually immersive experience; from light fittings to cabinets, each feature has been designed in partnership with local carpenters and artisans to create a unique sensorial impact.

The stores have their own 180-degree floral wallpaper painting, denoting the rose farm and the bees that make Wedgewood’s distinctly South African honey.

Wedgewood shows no sign of slowing down … this coming month sees the launch of a new toasted nougat chocolate range, inspired by Gilly and designed by Wedgewood’s artisanal chefs on the farm. Gilly’s Toasted Nougat Chocolate will be available to sample at the Piggly Wiggly Emporium. Expect a chocolate experience that sidesteps convention in Gilly’s typical bravely experimentational confectionery style!

t’s no surprise the Midlands is a tightknit community, and its people are always aiming for the betterment of each other. We would like to shine the spotlight on and celebrate several local organisations for their drive and passion to keep the heart of our community beating.

Love Howick describes itself as a “catalyst for positive transformation”, serving as a platform for partnership between key community sectors to maximise social impact. Their community development strategy focuses on five key pillars: Place Development, Social Development, Skills Development, Economic Development, and Narrative Development. 2. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with coffee beans.

Festive Season Rum Punch INGREDIENTS • 1 cup Sugar Baron Single Estate White Rum • 1 x Bottle Sparkling Wine or Prosecco of Choice • 1 litre Sprite • 1 cup each of orange, pineapple, cranberry, and apple juice • 1 cup strawberries, sliced • 1 cup raspberries • orange slices • lemon and lime wedges • fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish • ice *Quantities can be adjusted according to the size of the punch bowl.

Watermelon & Mint Rum Cooler INGREDIENTS • 30ml Sugar Baron Single Estate White Rum • 150ml fresh watermelon juice • 25ml lime juice • soda water • mint leaves • watermelon wedge for garnish

METHOD 1. Muddle mint leaves with lime juice in a glass.

2. Add watermelon juice, White Rum and ice.

3. Top with soda water, and garnish with a watermelon wedge.

Cherry Jubilee INGREDIENTS • 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream • 60ml Sugar Baron Cherry Rum Liqueur • 30ml grenadine • 100ml soda water • cherries for garnish

METHOD 1. Place two scoops of ice cream in a highball glass.

Set aside.

2. Mix together Sugar Baron Cherry Rum Liqueur, grenadine, and soda water.

3. Pour the soda water, Cherry Rum Liqueur and grenadine mixture over the ice cream. Stir to combine, garnish with cherries and serve.

he Optimum Health Centre (OHC) recently opened its doors in Howick. It welcomes anyone in South Africa seeking to overcome persistent health concerns that conventional (Western) medical approaches cannot resolve.

He holds a Master’s in Counselling Psychology and a Master’s in Adult Education from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Master’s in Environmental Science at the Lund University in Sweden. Alistair is a scientist at heart, specialising in providing scientifically supported psychological/neurological interventions.

Helen Gatley - Occupational Therapist With over 18 years of experience, Helen holds her Master’s in Public Mental Health and a Certificate in Pain Management. She works with patients with CRPS, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune conditions like SLE, and other primary pain conditions.

Her area of expertise revolves around helping patients restore their normal day-to-day activities.

Dr Irwin Friedman - Medical Doctor Irwin, as he prefers to be called, holds an M.B.BCh degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and a postgraduate qualification in public health (Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health—UK). LOCAL Keri Strachan - Dietician Keri has almost 20 years of experience in private practice. She holds a Master’s from Stellenbosch University, a BSc in Dietetics, and a postgraduate diploma from University of KwaZulu-Natal. She worked in the UK for seven years gaining clinical experience. She specialises in sports nutrition and therapeutic carbohydrate restriction to manage metabolic disease.

Dr Stephan Vosloo - Functional Medical Practitioner Stephan is a qualified medical doctor who also trained through the Functional Medicine University. He specialises in helping individuals manage and improve conditions like Alzheimer's, dementia, hypertension, diabetes, fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety disorders, Hashimoto’s disease, and other chronic autoimmune illnesses.

Mandy Rawlins - Physiotherapist A practising physiotherapist for over 30 years, Mandy holds a BSc in Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town, an Honours in Psychology from UNISA, and she attended a Coaching for Development course through the UCT Business School and is registered with the ICF- International Coaching Federation. She specialises in sports injuries and orthopaedics. She also offers a more holistic approach as a stress and burnout coach.

Kathryn Millar- Health Coach Kathryn is a qualified health coach through the Health Coaches Academy in the UK. She specialises in helping women between the ages of 35 to 55, notably, women who exercise without visible results. Her experience includes working with pre-diabetic and Type-2 diabetes patients. Additionally, she can assist patients who would like to adopt a more plant-based diet.

Lisa Glaister - Health Coach Lisa holds a Science Honours degree in Environmental Geographical Science from the University of Cape Town. She is also a qualified Neuroscience Hardwires Interpretation Coach and a qualified Health Coach from the Health Coaches Academy in the UK. She specialises in whole-life balance, supporting clients in understanding their nutritional needs and how food affects the body and mind.

The team prioritises the identification of a client’s underlying root causes, such as chronic infections, nutrient deficiencies and chronic dysregulation in the nervous systems to understand exactly what is contributing to chronic health issues. Y

ou’re probably familiar with one of our local coffee shops, Coffeeberry. It is owned and run by fatherson duo Con and Mark Malherbe, who are going from strength to strength in building their legacy within the hospitality business. We wanted to know more about their successes, so we picked their brains about business. If you’re a business owner or want to start one, we hope this will inspire you. Our countryside is never short of inspirational people, you just need to find them. It all started almost 20 years ago. Con studied a hotel management course in the early 1980s and worked in the retail and hospitality industry running a few notable establishments, among them a SPAR supermarket in Richmond, and then a restaurant at Greys Hospital, which was called Chatters. He then ran and managed several catering establishments at the Royal and Garden Shows, which included Scott’s Restaurant and the Bull and Barrel Pub. He acquired the old Icy Cool site at Cascades Lifestyle Centre in 2005 and Coffeeberry was born. Other establishments where you may have enjoyed your daily coffee over the years followed, including their speciality coffee drive-through, CoffeeBox, at Athlone Circle and Maritzburg College and, yes, another Coffeeberry in Hilton, to name a few! Mark joined the family business around four years ago but has been no stranger to the hospitality industry, growing up around his dad’s expertise and knowledge, which undoubtedly inspired him throughout the years.

Running and managing several businesses in tandem for over 20 years is no easy feat and there have been many challenges, like building a brand from scratch to growing a team of committed staff members. At the heart of their ongoing success is a strong team, many of whom have over 10 years of service. “We’ve got general managers, assistant managers, supervisors, and an operations manager in place. So, it’s definitely about building the team and having the right people,” Con shared. Additionally, they stay on top of things with regular meetings, keeping by the book, and adhering to regular inspections. Thanks to Con’s wife, Sue, who is instrumental in ensuring that all the admin is meticulously kept up to date, this ensures they always know “exactly where the ship is going,” as Con shared. One of their biggest challenges was during COVID-19, but sound business relationships cultivated over the years helped during this trying time. “We got through that thanks to a good relationship with our bank, legal team, and ultimately our loyal customers who were quick to show their support as soon as we could resume trading,” shared Mark.

While pandemics are fortunately not regular upheavals, smaller challenges will always rear their heads in business. Some of the best ways to navigate these, as Mark shared, is “through consistent hard work and dedication to our businesses, week in and week out. Consistency and an even temperament are crucial in this regard.” And while challenges will always be there when building a business, with this, failure will inevitably throw

us curve balls too—we’ve all undoubtedly felt its sting in some areas of our lives. Having a business in any industry will be a risk, but as Con shared, it’s about taking “calculated risks” and not being reckless in business decisions. Failing numerous times over the years, has ultimately helped him to make better decisions. “Failure to me, is not consistently meeting the targets, across various categories, that we set out for each of our stores. We then focus on whichever aspect of the business needs attention/improvement and do whatever is required to rectify things,” shared Mark.

Keeping a business afloat is also an inside job. According to Con, it requires developing resilience and doing the best you can with what you have. “This includes developing qualities like confidence, patience, foresight, and an ability to spot opportunity in order to grow and drive your business forward,” shared Mark. “While failures can get us down, it’s important to remember that there are two sides to every coin. With failure comes success, but it’s easy to focus on our shortcomings or fall into the trap of believing we are victims or blaming others, which is why it’s so important to have a ‘victor mentality’,” shared Con, something he’s learned to develop over the years not only in business but also in health and wellness, which is key to staying balanced. To round it off, we would like to share some helpful advice that forms the bedrock of how Con and Mark have led their team and business over the years. “Just show up, you know, show up and give your best every day,” advised Con. “Be consistent and do the right thing for your business, not the easiest or cheapest thing. Keep focussed and don’t get too emotional, whether you’re dealing with success or failure. Surround yourself with good people and treat them with respect. Look after your suppliers, always. Be aware of what your competition is doing but ultimately focus on your offering and the results will speak for themselves.”

Trusting your ‘Mum Gut’ WORDS DR ROWENA FILLIS

W

ith the festive season upon us, and with most of us planning to take time out to travel or unwind at home, we all know too well that sometimes sickness is inevitable, and there is nothing worse than being on holiday with a sick child. The question is when to worry. Herewith are common signs and symptoms that children can present with and more importantly when do these signs become DANGER SIGNS and when to seek medical help.

Fever is defined as a body temperature of 37.5 °C or greater. Parents tend to press the panic button when kids have the slightest rise in body temperature, however, one can be reassured that it is a normal physiological response that facilitates and accelerates recovery.

Medical care should be sought when a fever is in the presence of the following: • Infants younger than three-months-old.

• Fever associated with a new skin rash.

• Temperature greater than 40 °C. • Febrile seizure.

• Recurrent fevers without any other symptoms for more than seven days.

Cough is a symptom that can be associated with upper respiratory and/or lower respiratory tract infections. Some coughs can persist up to six weeks post-viral illness.

Every parent generally cringes when their child is up and coughing throughout the night. Urgent medical care is required when a cough is associated with the following signs: • Fast breathing (more than 50 breaths per minute).

• Chest indrawing (which is the inward movement of the lower chest wall when the child breathes in).

• Nasal flaring (when a child’s nostrils widen when breathing).

• Noisy breathing.

Acute gastroenteritis (‘Gastro’) consists of either diarrhoea, vomiting or both. At most, the cause is related to an acute viral illness and is transient. Not all children with gastro require hospitalisation. The indications for a medical visit include: • If the child is less than six-months-old or weighs less than eight kilograms.

• Bloody stool or tarry black stools.

• Frequent vomiting and unable to tolerate any oral fluids.

• Unable to cry tears, dry mouth with fewer wet nappies.

• Sunken eyes or a sunken fontanelle.

• Lethargy.

Hopefully these tips on danger signs will put your mind at ease that not every cough, fever, nor gastro needs to be rushed to the Emergency Room this festive season.

Despite all the above-mentioned information, it is equally important to trust your ‘Mum Gut’.

The Rise of Padel WORDS TIM JOHNSON A big part of my childhood was spent on either a Tennis or Squash court. Some of my earliest and most special family memories revolved around the Umhlali Country Club and my grandparent’s Tennis Court. Wimbledon was our favourite time of the year, as it coincided with the Umhlali Tennis tournament which was a longstanding community event, and generally the only time of the year I got to attend a disco. What I remember so vividly was the sense of community, healthy competition, and camaraderie.

I loved spending time at the Tennis club and was fortunate to play at a decent level through school, culminating in a glittering farmer’s league career at Rhodes University.

Unfortunately, club Tennis and Squash have lost some of their popularity over the years, in more recent times, being eclipsed by arguably one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, Padel. As you can imagine, this hybrid racket sport caught my eye and my interest has only been supercharged by the development of a wonderful Padel facility over the road from my home, at the iconic Nottingham Road Hotel. It’s safe to say that the bug has bitten many people in an area far better known for its golf, clay shooting, and fly-fishing inhabitants. The real question is why this sport has become so popular and whether or not it is just a passing fad or here to stay?

Globally, there are more than 25 million active players from 110 countries with over 40,000 courts and a compounded growth of 26% annually. Padel was invented in Mexico in the 1960s but shortly after was introduced to Spain where it really took off.

There are now 22,000 courts in Spain alone with over 3.7 million players. Another example of this popularity is Sweden, where they have gone from less than 100 courts three years ago,

to over 800 courts and half a million players in 2024.

Notwithstanding the many health benefits of being active, there are a number of other factors that make the sport so popular. Firstly, many clubs prioritise a welcoming, inclusive environment for people of all ages, genders, and abilities. This makes the sport more accessible, less stuffy and easy to get into. No designated parking for the Club Captain I’m afraid.

In Notties, the covered courts are a perfect venue to escape the elements and allow for more play come rain, shine or the very rare scorcher. The cold beer on tap doesn’t do any harm to the experience either.

Another interesting facet of the sport is that the social aspect extends beyond the physical courts into the digital realm. Apps, such as Playtomic, have created a user-friendly online booking system and social media platform making it easier to connect with fellow players, book and pay for court time, load results, match with similar skilled players, enter leagues and competitions, and more. This has made the sport both convenient and appealing to a more modern, techsavvy generation.

The bottom line is that I’m a firm believer in supporting the significant investments being made into these types of community and club facilities. If anything else, they are an important reminder of the value of families and friends gathering over a shared love of sport and healthy activities.
