elcome to the second edition of The Hill. When we launched the first issue, we hoped it would find a place in the community. What we didn’t expect was how warmly you’d welcome it. The response went well beyond anything we imagined, and we’re truly grateful. To be publishing this second edition, backed by readers and clients who’ve embraced what we’re building, is a genuine delight.

I’ve been reminded of that same warmth these past weeks, a long way from home.

A few weeks ago, we were in Bali for a family wedding, mixing celebration with a proper holiday. What stayed with me wasn’t the beaches or the food, though both were exceptional; it was the people, the warmth of the Balinese and the feeling of a place that puts connection first. We also got to see Ceagan and Courtney, who flew in from China for the wedding and their own holiday. Stealing a few days with them and sneaking in a cigar with Ceagan again after way too long was a special gift.

Now we’re in Amsterdam with Roxy and Warren, waiting on the birth of our first grandchild. Another season, another reason to be somewhere that matters.

The travelling has given me time to reflect, and reading this edition sharpened the thought: life isn’t about slowing down. It’s about focus, choosing where your time goes and giving it fully, whether it’s work, family, health or a wedding halfway across the world. In fact, I’ve never felt more energised or driven.

That’s the thread I kept finding as I read this second edition. Bettina and Gerbrant could have bought a finished house.

Instead, they chose a 1920s stone villa and are uncovering it one chisel mark at

a time, refusing the cookie-cutter option.

That’s not slow; it’s deliberate. Bongani KaBhungane builds his art fibre by fibre, story by story, turning cotton and thread into a record of who we are and where we come from, focus made visible. Jo Thornton took the hardest season of her life and built something that now helps other people find their strength. She didn’t do more; she did what mattered.

And the Highbury Class of 2001 reminded us that the things worth keeping aren’t the grand ones; they’re the nicknames, the scribbled notes, the people who show up: a grandmother attending on her grandson’s behalf. That’s the quiet lesson of this edition. The good life up here isn’t measured by how much we accumulate; it’s measured by what we choose to give our attention to, and who we choose to give it to. The people in these pages made good choices about their time. So did the venues, the makers, the coaches and the families we’ve featured. Wherever this magazine finds you, at home in Hillcrest or somewhere further afield, I hope it reminds you to spend your time on what counts: the work worth doing and the people worth showing up for.

F

or a long time, I thought that growth was about moving forward.

As a speaker, author, and mother of three who heads up an NGO, my life is often measured by deadlines, school calendars, market days, appointments and endless to-do lists. Like many women, I know what it feels like to juggle many balls at once, constantly trying to be fully present whilst quietly wondering if I’m succeeding anywhere at all.

Last year, my word for the year was “behold: to pause long enough to actually see”. This year, my words are “slow and steady”. My time split between working in the beautiful depths of the Valley of a Thousand Hills and raising kids in the leafy Upper Highway has taught me that some of life’s greatest lessons are not found in moving faster but in slowing down long enough to really and truly see.

In the crazy, rat-raced, westernised world we find ourselves in, I cannot help but be struck by the realisation that often the people with the least seem to carry the greatest capacity for connection. The nanny I run past whilst on my morning jog, who greets me with genuine warmth despite carrying burdens I can hardly begin to imagine.

The child who wears holey underwear to school but whose joy is untouched by the absence of things. The elderly Gogo, who still has time for a conversation even as her taxi fills up, and may not have space for her.

These moments remind me that personal growth is not merely becoming a better version of ourselves through courses or academia. Personal growth, as a KZN-er, may simply mean slowing down often enough that we notice the range of people around us each day, and the gold that sits within each of them.

As a mom, these are the lessons I most hope to pass on to my three children. Not simply that they would gain an excellent education or win their crosscountry league run, but that they would see more clearly. That they would understand that every person carries a story, a struggle, and a dignity that deserves to be honoured. As a South African, this is one of our greatest privileges, and as a Hillcrest-er our communities are so intertwined that it’s about time that we let go of an “us and them” mentality and embrace our connectedness.

Personally, the older I get, the more I realise that success is a poor substitute for significance; it is rarely found in what we accomplish. More often than not, significance is found in the lives we touch along the way.

hat makes a wedding truly special? At its heart, it’s a gathering of a couple’s favourite people, brought together to celebrate the beginning of a shared life. It is a day filled with hope, joy and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. Now, imagine that celebration unfolding beneath the soaring peaks of the Northern Drakensberg. Their approach is clear: almost everything in their lovingly restored, old home is intentionally second-hand, from furniture to appliances to one-off vintage art pieces. It’s part sustainability, aesthetics, and philosophy.

n Italian(-ish) villa tucked into the Shongweni Valley is slowly being brought back to life

by Bettina Schneider and her husband, Gerbrandt. They are a young couple documenting their restoration journey as both a lived experience and a digital record of discovery.

Set in one of the valley’s pockets of historic stone architecture, the home is believed to date back to the period when Italian engineers were involved in constructing

the Shongweni Dam in the 1920s. Because definitive documentation has yet to surface, it exists, in many ways, between recorded history and oral memory. It is part of a small cluster of stone buildings in the area, alongside landmarks such as Stonehaven Castle Estate, that together hint at a layered and still partly undocumented local history.

When Bettina and her husband first began looking for a home last year, they were not even W W W. T H E H I L L M A G A Z I N E . C O . Z A | 21

home, layers of alteration and time are being carefully peeled back rather than erased. Over the years, the house has been modified repeatedly, with original features covered, reshaped or forgotten entirely.

One of the earliest discoveries came almost by instinct. Before moving in, Bettina suspected that stonework had been hidden beneath cemented living room pillars. Despite being told by previous owners that nothing lay beneath, she arrived armed with a small chisel. Her instinct was right.

Since then, uncovering hidden structure has become almost routine. “We constantly play this game of ‘Is there stone behind this?’ because it’s usually a 50/50 chance,” she says.

Their Instagram account reflects the same curiosity: images of demolition, exposed stone, salvaged pieces and half-finished spaces that sit somewhere between ruin and restoration. One caption describes it as “Old is Gold”, a phrase that captures the tone of the entire project: equal parts humour, grit and affection for imperfection.

They had been exploring opportunities abroad and at the ‘last minute’ they opened Property24 one Saturday evening. The first listing they viewed would become the one they eventually bought. “On Monday morning, we viewed it. We were here for three hours,” Bettina recalls. “We got in the car and looked at each other and thought, ‘Should we put in an offer right now?’”

Although other higher offers came in, the couple were chosen by the sellers because they aligned with the long-term vision for the property.

as well as privately, not only through renovation but through their Instagram account, which has become a behind-the-scenes log of sweat equity, salvage finds and second-hand sourcing. “Everything pictured has been sourced and bought second-hand,” one post notes.

“We try our hardest to only buy second-hand. It’s not only sustainable and has saved us thousands, but it’s worth it for a multitude of reasons … we are never going back.” It is a mindset that has shaped the renovation as much as the architecture itself. Inside the

ong before Bongani “Nattydread” KaBhungane was teaching yoga or exhibiting artwork, he was a young man from Mount Fletcher with a pencil in his hand and a growing curiosity about where people come from, and what they carry with them through life.

Today, his work explores identity, ancestry and movement across Africa, but the path that led him there has been anything but straightforward. “There was a time when my life looked very different,” Bongani says. After years spent navigating the distractions and temptations of youth, a nearfatal shooting became a moment of reckoning, one that ultimately redirected his life toward creativity, spirituality and self-discovery. It is perhaps this understanding of transformation that runs through so much of his work today.

Born in Matatiele and raised in Mount Fletcher, Bongani later worked in a sugar factory before moving to Durban to study Fine Art and Jewellery Design at Durban University of Technology (DUT).

There he encountered textile design, a discipline that would shape the direction of his artistic life.

At first glance, cotton may seem an unusual material to become fascinated by. Yet for Bongani, cotton is a storyteller. His research traces cotton’s journey through different African societies and ancient civilisations, examining how people, traditions and knowledge moved across borders long before modern maps existed. In his work, cotton becomes a symbol of connection, a thread linking communities separated by geography but connected through shared histories.

The process itself is slow and deliberate. Rather than relying

solely on paint, Bongani builds his various works through layers of cloth, stitching, embroidery and mixed media. The art develops gradually, needles and thread become drawing tools, and fabric becomes a surface for memory. In some pieces, the stitched marks feel almost like scars, while in others they resemble pathways or family lines stretching across generations.

What emerges is work that asks viewers to think differently about heritage. Not as something fixed in the past, but as something living that continues to shape who we are.

Alongside his visual art, Bongani teaches yoga and practises martial arts, both of which emphasise mindfulness and presence. That same patience is visible in his creative process. Nothing feels rushed.

Every layer, every stitch and every mark is considered.

For visitors encountering his work, the takeaway is not necessarily an understanding of a specific historical event or cultural reference; it is something more personal. His art encourages us to reflect on our own threads of connection: the stories handed down to us, the journeys that brought our families here, and the traditions we choose to carry forward with our own creative endeavours.

In a fast-moving world, Bongani's work is a reminder that identity is rarely created overnight. Like cotton woven into cloth, it is built fibre by fibre, story by story.

T

here are moments in life when time folds in on itself … For old boy Kurt Duvel, now living in London, the opening of Highbury Preparatory School’s Class of 2001’s time capsule earlier this year prompted reflections on memories and how ordinary moments quietly become history.

“I don’t recall exactly what we put into the time capsule a quarter of a century ago,” he says. “But perhaps that is what makes it so special now. At 12 or 13, you don’t really understand that the ordinary

details of your school life may one day become history.” Inside were newspapers, coins, stamps, school programmes, a model of the chapel, and even CDs. Sealed by Grade 7 boys 25 years earlier, the capsule had preserved not only objects from a different era, but the everyday texture of school life in 2001. The opening, held on Founders’ Day this year in Highbury’s Centenary Hall, brought together old boys, parents and former staff to reflect on time and the school’s legacy. Beyond the capsule, the gathering reminded attendees

of the communities that schools create long after pupils leave. Old boys, parents and grandparents came together to reminisce and reconnect, some meeting for the first time, others rediscovering faded connections.

Bound by a shared Highbury experience, many found themselves part of a community they had perhaps always belonged to but temporarily forgotten. “What struck me afterwards was how the capsule preserved the texture of 2001, not only through the expected items like class photographs, school programmes, newspapers,

Those details feel especially poignant in an age before smartphones and social media, when memories were captured on disposable cameras, notes passed by hand, and CDs were cutting-edge technology. Twenty-five years later, those everyday objects have become artefacts. The timing added another layer. Kurt’s class left Highbury just before the school’s centenary celebrations in 2003 and before the construction of the Centenary Hall. “It feels like a bridge between the Highbury we knew as boys and the Highbury that came after us,” he reflects. The occasion also highlighted that a school’s influence often extends far beyond its gates. Highbury’s reflections

spoke of lifelong friendships and each generation’s role in shaping its story.

For Kurt, one moment stood out.

His grandmother, Sheila, who still lives near the school, attended and was welcomed with open arms.

“The most meaningful part for me was that she could attend on my behalf and be so warmly welcomed by the school that helped shape me into who I am today.” Beyond the capsule itself, the gathering served as a reminder of the relationships and bonds schools create long after pupils leave their classrooms. Old boys, parents and grandparents came

together to reminisce, reconnect and share stories spanning decades.

Perhaps that is why time capsules continue to capture the imagination.

Whether created by schools, families or individuals, they offer a rare chance to speak to the future while preserving the present.

i, my name is Joanne Thornton, but most people know me as “Jo”.

I’m 27 years old and the founder of Thornton Physiques Online Coaching. If you spend any time in Hillcrest, there’s a good chance you’ve seen me grabbing a coffee with my cream dachshund, Ollie.

One of the things I’ve grown to love most is weight training and what it does for both the body and mind.

Yes, it helps you build strength and improve your physique, but the benefits go far beyond that. It improves posture, supports longterm health, boosts confidence and builds discipline in a way that carries into every area of life.

My love for fitness and health started over 10 years ago. Back then, I walked into the gym feeling intimidated and unsure of where to start, but deep down, I knew it was where I was meant to be. Fitness gave me confidence, purpose, community and healing. My goal is to help other people discover what movement can do for them beyond just physical results.

Over the years, fitness has become so much more than just exercise. I developed a passion for lifting weights, building my body and learning everything I could about health and nutrition. At one point in my life, I felt stuck and uncomfortable in my own body. I know firsthand what it feels like to lack confidence and not know where to begin. That experience sparked something in me.

I spent countless hours researching, learning and eventually became a certified nutrition coach. What started as a journey to understand my body became a purpose-driven path to helping others transform theirs too.

For me, the gym has never just been about aesthetics. It became a place where I found peace. On stressful days, I would walk into the gym and leave feeling lighter, calmer and refreshed.

When I lost my twin brother almost a year ago, that space became even more meaningful. It gave me something to hold onto during one of the most difficult seasons of my life, helping me process grief, clear my mind and keep moving forward one day at a time.

Looking back, I truly believe fitness carried me through that loss mentally and emotionally and continues to do so.

and do more of it. My approach is built around sustainability. I believe fitness should enhance your life, not consume it. Rather than quick fixes, I focus on education, accountability and building habits that last long after a programme ends. Real life includes family dinners, holidays and busy schedules, and I teach my clients how to make progress while still enjoying those special moments. Balance is important.

If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: stop focusing so much on changing your body and start focusing on what your body can do. Our body is a gift. The confidence, strength and resilience you gain along the way will always be worth far more than any number on a scale.

Starting your fitness journey doesn’t need to be complicated.

Keep it simple and focus on consistency.

Another thing I love about the fitness industry is the people. There’s something special about it. Strangers become familiar faces, you start to greet people you’ve never spoken to before, and over time it feels like a community all quietly working on becoming better versions of themselves.

These days I’m proudly a 5 a.m. club girly. You’ll usually find me waking up before sunrise, having my almond milk coffee and heading to the gym to start my day doing something I genuinely love. Moving my body first thing in the morning sets the tone for everything that follows. I know not everyone loves the gym, and that’s okay. My biggest piece of advice is to find movement that works for you. Exercise should never feel like punishment. Whether it’s lifting weights, running, dancing, swimming, hiking or simply going for a walk outside in fresh air, find something that makes you feel good

1. Master the basics: You don’t need a perfect plan; start by building simple, repeatable habits first.

2. Move daily: Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement a day, whether that’s walking, training, stretching or anything else that gets you active.

3. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water daily supports energy, performance, recovery and overall wellbeing.

4. Prioritise balanced nutrition: Focus on protein, carbs and veggies.

Protein supports muscle repair and keeps you fuller for longer, carbs fuel your training and daily energy and vegetables provide key vitamins, minerals and fibre.

5. Listen to your body: Rest is part of progress. If you need a recovery day, take it without guilt.

Winter Wellness Treats One thing helping me get through the colder mornings lately is my current obsession: chocolate baked oats. They’re warm, packed with protein and honestly feel like dessert for breakfast (I have a big sweet tooth).

Ingredients • 30g oats • Pinch of salt • 1 tsp cocoa powder • 1 tsp baking powder • 30g NPL Whey Platinum Plus • 5g honey • 80ml almond/low-fat milk • Cinnamon Method 1. Mix all the ingredients together and pour into an oven-safe dish.

2. Bake at 180°C for 20 minutes.

n a chilly afternoon, we headed down to Compensation Beach Road in Ballito, where the cutest restaurant sits on a cosy corner. Its vibrant red and pink stripes let you know instantly that a wonderful time awaits! The Waffle Society is a family- and pet-friendly spot serving up creative, reimagined waffles and good vibes.

As we entered, the friendly staff greeted us with warm smiles and showed us to our table. We loved the lively space, the vibey music, and the stunning mural by local artist Minnette, which really set the tone for a beautiful lunch. We started with drinks while we took our time looking through the extensive menu: a well-spiced chai frappe, a vibrant bubblegum milkshake, a Hot Society cocktail with just the right amount of zing, and a creamy cappuccino.

After much consideration, as there were so many mouthwatering options, we finally decided what to order. Starting with savoury waffles, we chose The Wafflin’ Chicken, a mozzarella-and-thyme-stuffed

waffle stacked with buttermilk-fried chicken, roasted tomatoes, fresh leaves, pickles, garlic aioli, and hot honey. The fried chicken was crispy, golden, and succulent. It can be ordered as a side dish or swapped for aubergine if you’re looking for a veg option; either way, both are delicious!

From the all-day breakfast menu, we chose the Hallou’ Me, a spinach-andcheese-stuffed waffle topped with grilled halloumi, two poached eggs (cooked your way), grilled mushrooms, roast tomatoes, sliced avo and pesto mayo. If these waffles sound like they’re loaded, it’s because they are! Come here hungry because you will definitely leave full.

Gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free and vegan waffles are available. Waffles can also be swapped for toasted sourdough bread or salad leaves for lighter alternatives.

Sweet-toothed folks will be spoilt for choice. We had the Mint to Be, a toasted coconut waffle topped with homemade salted caramel sauce, whipped cream, a Tennis biscuit ‘sandwich’ and plenty of Peppermint Crisp chocolate. The Milk Tart Magic – a cinnamon waffle served

two ways – half classic, half as waffle bites, with homemade milk tart crème for dipping, sharing, or keeping to yourself – is a fresh spin on traditional South African flavours. If you’re visiting Ballito for the Heritage Day long weekend, these waffles are a great way to celebrate.

From Thursday to Saturday between 17:00 and 21:00, you can enjoy tapas-style waffles from their Waffles After Dark menu – think elevated and unexpected flavour combinations perfectly paired with their bespoke cocktail and wine list – ideal for sharing on a girls’ night out.

W

e live in an age of unprecedented connection. With a device in our pockets, we can reach and be reached by almost anyone, at any time, from almost anywhere. Yet despite this remarkable connectivity, many people report feeling increasingly disconnected from themselves, from others, and from a sense of meaning.

Perhaps this is one of the paradoxes of modern life: hyper-connectivity can sometimes leave us feeling disconnected. We may be the first generation in history expected to be aware of the world’s problems in real time while simultaneously managing the ordinary demands of daily life.

Global crises, political upheaval, economic uncertainty, and a constant stream of information arrive alongside emails, family responsibilities, and personal challenges. It is unsurprising that so many people feel overwhelmed.

Social media adds another layer of complexity.

We are exposed to carefully curated snapshots of other people’s lives, often creating the illusion that everyone else is coping, succeeding, or thriving more than we are. Constant comparison can leave us feeling inadequate, anxious, or as though we are somehow falling behind.

News alerts, messages, notifications, and endless scrolling leave little room for reflection or rest.

At the same time, our attention has become increasingly fragmented, and many of us lose touch with our own authentic thoughts, emotions and needs. When our focus is divided across multiple demands, we may find ourselves physically present but mentally elsewhere.

We communicate constantly and have an ambient awareness of hundreds of lives, yet a meaningful connection requires more: presence, attention, and time. We can know more about people’s lives while spending less meaningful time with them.

We know what old school friends ate for breakfast, what distant relatives think about politics and what acquaintances did on holiday, but very little about the emotional weather of their lives.

Addressing this paradox of hyper-connectivity begins with recognising our limits. Just as we’re instructed to secure our own oxygen mask before helping others on an aircraft, we need to prioritise our own wellbeing before attempting to carry the weight of the world.

This might mean setting boundaries around technology use, limiting exposure to distressing news, seeking support from a mental health professional, or intentionally creating space for activities that reconnect us with ourselves and the present moment.

Practices such as meditation, yoga, spending time in nature, or simply taking a walk without our phones can help restore a sense of balance. In an era of constant connection, protecting our attention may be one of the most important acts of self-care.
