Our Story
My husband and I met at work. We used to work together and started off as friends for three years before becoming a couple.
The Planning
The wedding talk casually started in December 2024, and by January, we started looking for venues. The real planning started when we went for couples therapy, and the therapist asked when the wedding would be, and if we had a date set. We realised we needed to start planning, and that's what we did! We first decided on date options and budget, then we went venue searching. Sharula Estate was the second venue we viewed, and we loved it, so we decided to book it. The initial date was April 2026, but we moved it to November 2025 because we were advised to by our pastors. We also just wanted to get married already!
Favourite Moment
Our whole wedding was our favourite, but if we had to pick specific moments, it would be the intimate morning photoshoot in our home, the vow exchange, the signing of our license, and seeing our family and friends enjoying themselves.
Our First Dance Song
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. The lyrics speak to us about what our love would be, growing old together.
A Special Touch
We had our traditional wedding the same morning as our white wedding. We also had our families exchange gifts in the same venue as our white wedding.
Our Story
George and I met on Instagram. I followed him because we had a few mutual friends, shortly after he slid into my DMs. We dated for two years, taking flights back and forth to visit each other as he lived in Ballito and I lived in Jo’burg. After two years of dating, I moved to Ballito, and two years after, we got engaged in Mauritius!
The Planning
I planned everything with help from my mom and mom-in-law. My dream venue, Stonehaven Castle Estate in Shongweni, is a real castle built over 100 years ago. I wanted to dress my bridesmaids in something they felt comfortable and beautiful in. They chose dresses from Forever New and my stunning wedding gown came from A'mour Bridal Boutique in Hillcrest. The décor was simple but elegant, and the florals were minimal as my husband is allergic to them! The Upper Highway Function Hire took care of our décor, florals, canapés and plated meals. We decided to do a cupcake tower with a small cake on top instead of a traditional cake. The ceremony took place at our Greek Orthodox Church in Durban North, canapés took place in the castle, and we hired a glass marquee next to the castle, where the reception took place. Our DJ, Alexi, brought all the vibes for our big fat Greek wedding, a dance floor that we could light on fire, and Greek plates for breaking. I made a menu for each of our guests, and customised their names with a wax seal.
A Special Touch
I cut the bottom of my dress so I could dance. I took it back to A'mour Bridal Boutique to turn it into a mini dress that I can wear every year on our anniversary! Something special my husband and I decided to do was to not get drunk on the day, so we could both remember and savour every moment.
Favourite Moment
Our first dance. Around the time of our wedding planning, we loved watching the Bridgerton series, so we decided to practise a Bridgerton dance. George and I would practise the steps in our living room during the evenings. This was a special time as my husband is not much of a dancer, and I love to dance, but we both thoroughly enjoyed it and had so much fun dancing to “Wildest Dreams (Bridgerton Version)” on our wedding day!

Our Story
We met each other at work about six years ago. It was actually my last day at that company and his first day. I then moved to Jo’burg for my new job, but whenever I came back home to Durban and met up with old colleagues, Jack was also there. We started chatting more and more like friends. Then we started dating after two years, and one year later, my job position moved to Durban. Not long after, he proposed on my birthday.
The Planning
Initially, we did not want to go big for the wedding or even have a wedding ceremony, but eventually made the decision to have a relatively casual one with our families and close friends. We started looking for a wedding planner and venue, and through our families and friends, we found Nicky Almeida. We discussed everything we wanted for our wedding in person with Nicky. Since the venue had to be booked in advance, and in our culture, the wedding date has to have a fortune number and a good date on the lunar calendar, we decided to have it at the Zimbali Country Club on 1 October, but this meant we had about two weeks left for the wedding, from the time of booking! We were all under intense pressure, but all decisions were made quickly. Luckily, we got Nicky, who is a professional in this field, she helped us put everything together on time and beautifully. Our ceremony venue was decorated with flowers on both sides; it was absolutely dreamy.
Favourite Moment
When I finally got to take off my high heels after the ring exchange, and when all the guests went upstairs for lunch.
Our First Dance Song
It was Ellie Goulding’s “How Long Will I Love You”. It was the dream wedding song for most girls back then. Wow, it was definitely mine.
As our area develops and transforms, we’ve also seen local icons receive facelifts to complement the changing landscape and aesthetic. Carefully considering every design change and tenant, Zimbali Oasis has worked hard to create a convenient and familyfriendly strip mall. Having all the essentials available in one place saves time and makes running errands much simpler, something we all find ourselves looking for. Looking for a quiet spot to get those final projects finished with fresh coffee and pastries, Seattle Coffee, with their friendly staff are ready to welcome you. To complement the courtyard setting in the centre, more foodie spots will be introduced, giving patrons more options when grabbing a snack between a busy day or settling down for a family dinner. Complemented by the kids’ play area, run by childminders, with more options coming soon to keep the little ones entertained and safe. What makes the Zimbali Oasis even greater is
that it doesn’t only cater to humans! More than just a car wash, Oasis Auto Spa treats every car and wash with care and attention to detail, with no rushed washes and no generic products. For your home, Jack’s Hardware, one of the long-time tenants, and newcomer U&G Lifestyle offer quality home maintenance and décor products.
With the posterior section of the centre still under construction and more office spaces coming soon, there is still excitement surrounding the potential Zimbali Oasis holds. Looking out for these new attractions and events coming soon!

February may be all about hearts and roses, but for Ballito couple Gabby and Travis Strydom, romance often shows up in a slightly different form - a shared sweat session, a set of pads, or simply walking into the gym side by side. Married for almost two years and together for eight, 27-yearold Travis Strydom and 26-year-old Gabby Strydom have built a relationship where movement is part of their DNA.
Although both train consistently, their routines are determined by their own passions and strengths. “My week is a mix of strength training, Pilates, boxing, and a long walk daily, with recovery work like sauna sessions, ice baths, and stretching,” says Gabby, who trains five to six days a week, depending on her workload and shoots.
“I split my week between callisthenics, strength training, and touch rugby,” Travis
explains. He also trains five to six days a week and has competed in several local touch rugby tournaments.
The pair often end up in the same gym, even if they aren’t doing the same workout. “Trav does his training, I do mine, but showing up together keeps us accountable and makes it much easier to stay consistent,” says Gabby.
Boxing is the sport that brings them together most naturally. “Trav started boxing for fun at a young age with his dad and brothers,” says Gabby. “I started boxing training at a gym in Cape Town in 2019 and fell in love with it, learning from personal trainers and doing one-on-one
photo HeatH tHistle
sessions.” Today, it’s one of their favourite shared activities. Whether they’re doing pad work or just “messing around,” as Gabby puts it, boxing has become a fun and playful outlet. “It’s a good way to laugh and destress.”
How Fitness Fuels Their Relationship
Movement has always been central to their lives; Travis with his rugby background and Gabby with her years as a competitive dancer. “We were both pretty active before we started dating. Movement always played a big role in both our lives,” says Gabby. “It was something we both valued in a partner, as it’s a
way of keeping your body healthy.”
Training together now adds a subtle but meaningful layer to their marriage. “It’s also a reset when life gets busy. You show up differently for your partner when you feel good physically,” says Travis.
And while many couples thrive on a little friendly rivalry, the Strydoms prefer cheering each other on. “We’re not really competitive with one another at all,” says Gabby. “We like to encourage each other in the various activities we do.”
The challenges they face are less about their different training styles and more about the dynamics of team sports.
Gabby laughs when talking about Padel: “I’m a dancer, so bat-andball sports aren’t my strength, which can make it tricky for Trav or anyone on my team when the level is high.” But they’ve learned how to keep things healthy. “We handle it by keeping things light, communicating, and not taking those moments too seriously,” she says. “Give each other space to be beginners, manage expectations, and choose activities that keep things fun rather than stressful.”
For couples wanting to get moving together, their advice is to start with something low-pressure that you both enjoy. “It’s also completely fine to train side by side but do different things,” Gabby says. What matters most is consistency, encouragement, and keeping the experience positive. “Let go of the idea that you need to be equally skilled. Let movement be something that strengthens your relationship, rather than adding stress to it.”

Vision for the Future
As an Ophthalmologist, Dr Bhavna Jugadoe provides comprehensive eye care with passion and clear communication. “If my patients are able to, they may complete an electronic patient information sheet before they come through for their appointment. Patients then undergo a pre-screening with an ophthalmic assistant before seeing me,” she explains.
A detailed history of the presenting complaint, past ophthalmic and medical history, a list of relevant medications, allergies, and family history is recorded. Eye pressure is taken at the slit lamp, with the patient’s pupils dilated with eyedrops to examine the retina thoroughly. If there are any concerns detected, it is discussed with the patient in detail. “Patient education about their condition is key to compliance with treatment, so I feel it is important to spend time educating my patients in
this regard,” Dr Jugadoe says. Scheduling regular eye tests and screening visits, especially if you have a family history of diabetes, glaucoma, or age-related macular degeneration, is highly recommended.
The internet and social media can be powerful tools for sharing knowledge, but can also spread quick-fix solutions or “hacks” that may lack scientific evidence. Blue light-blocking glasses have lenses designed to filter blue light from digital screens and LEDs, but according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, there is no strong scientific proof that they prevent eye damage or significantly reduce digital eye strain. Castor oil has been promoted for dry eyes and other benefits, but applying non-sterile, pure castor oil directly to your eyes is dangerous. Always consult an ophthalmologist before using any products in your eyes.
Personalised health Solutions
Dr Shannon Naidoo is a General Practitioner with a strong focus on preventative medicine, minor surgical procedures, and wellness therapies. Alongside routine GP consultations, his practice offers a range of IV drips, including antioxidant drips, vitamin infusions, anti-ageing support, and skin-brightening drips. He also provides medically supervised slimming injections and weight-management plans. Taking a holistic approach, his philosophy is to treat the whole patient, not just the symptom, creating a space where people feel heard and supported.
This year, Dr Naidoo encourages patients to return to the foundations of good health: balanced nutrition, regular movement, and proper sleep.
Simple habits like daily walking, hydrating well, and reducing highly processed foods make a difference. Routine screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and deficiencies remain essential. “I also remind patients that wellness therapy can support the immune system and overall vitality when used responsibly under medical supervision,” he explains.
Keeping things simple and practical, Dr Naidoo explains conditions and symptoms in plain language and makes sure patients understand what to monitor at home. “When patients understand the ‘why’ behind their health decisions, they feel confident and motivated to follow through,” he says.
A consultation is thorough but relaxed, beginning with an indepth intake form to understand your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors. “I then talk everything through with you and then perform a clinical examination and, if necessary, run blood tests on-site,” he explains. For patients interested in IV drips or slimming injections, he assesses suitability, explains the benefits and limitations, and tailors the treatment to the individual. When results come in, he explains them as clearly as possible and works with you on a customised plan.
Dr Naidoo’s practice is built around accessibility, personalised care, and a genuine commitment to longterm health. Patients can expect a doctor who listens, investigates, and values both medical treatment and preventative wellness.
With extended hours, urgent care support, IV drips, minor procedures, and safe, medically guided weight-management options, his goal is to help people feel healthier, stronger, and more confident.

At Kijk Optometrists, eye care is simple, practical, and personal. René takes time to listen to understand each patient’s needs, keeping eye care easy to follow and relevant to everyday life, keeping it honest and personal. From screen habits and eye drops to sun protection, they guide patients in caring for their eyes every day.
Digital eye strain is very real, and they’re seeing more tired eyes, dry eyes, and headaches than ever before - and screens are often the reason, even in children. While online “quick fixes” like miracle supplements, unexplained eye exercises, or cheap blue-light
glasses may sound appealing, they don’t replace a proper eye examination or advice tailored to your eyes and your lifestyle.
It’s also important not to underestimate the sun - especially in coastal areas, where we spend so much time outdoors. Sunglasses are essential for everyone, not just for fashion or prescription wearers. What truly matters is proper UV protection. Dark lenses alone don’t protect your eyes; it’s the UV filter that helps protect against cataracts, pterygium, and long-term eye damage. Good vision is a luxury. Healthy eyes are a necessity.

Horizon Medical Group, led by the husband-and-wife team of Dr D Kuerparsadh and Dr WW Manipersad, represents a renewed standard of patient-centred family medicine in Ballito. With over four years of private practice experience, Dr Manipersad, together with Dr Kuerparsadh, founded the practice in July 2025, united by a shared vision of thoughtful, relationshipdriven healthcare.
Their philosophy is grounded in personalised medicine, moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to care that is carefully tailored to each patient’s individual needs, circumstances, and family context.
Inspired by the principles of traditional small-town medicine, they prioritise continuity of care, trust, and meaningful doctorpatient relationships within a rapidly growing community.
“As both clinicians and parents, we provide comprehensive care across all ages, managing acute and chronic conditions with equal dedication,” they say. Having also experienced healthcare from the patient’s perspective, they bring a heightened understanding of what patients expect from their doctors, delivering care that is not only clinically excellent but deeply respectful and humane.
high-quality physiotherapy services. The practice helps patients return to activities they love, from running to surfing, with evidence-based care and modern methods.
Macquet Physiotherapy also has a practice at Northcare Medical
in Simbithi, working with a team of healthcare pros, including a skincare doctor, dietitians, an optometrist, and a homeopath, for a holistic approach.

Love in The Details
The most meaningful rings start with a conversation. A couple’s story - the moments, places, or values that define their relationship. These personal elements can be translated into subtle design details such as engravings, symbolic shapes, or even the choice of metal. The beauty lies in creating something deeply personal, often known only to the couple themselves.
A Good Foundation
A timeless design is a great start. From there, you can introduce modern elements, while ensuring the piece remains elegant and enduring. Personal touches are added thoughtfully, so the ring feels both current and classic. Ultimately, your ring should feel just as special decades from now as it does today.
There’s a clear shift toward individuality. Many couples are moving away from mass-produced designs and choosing custom-made rings that reflect their personal style. We're also seeing increased interest in mixed metals, softer diamond shapes, alternative gemstones, and understated elegance - designs
that feel personal rather than traditional. Custom jewellery should be accessible and transparent. From your first consultation, vision and budget should be discussed openly. Then go through your options and design refinements to achieve the best possible result within your budget - without compromising craftsmanship or quality.
Beyond the Look
Comfort and lifestyle are crucial. A ring is worn every day, so it must suit the wearer's lifestyle and work. Consider practical aspects such as durability, setting height, and metal choice, ensuring the ring is not only beautiful but also comfortable and long-lasting.
Telling Your Story
Some of the most special designs include hidden birthstones, hand-engravings, fingerprints engraved inside the band, or symbolic details visible only from certain angles, adding depth and meaning. Incorporating heirloom gold or stones is another beautiful way to honour family history while creating something new.
Each person’s style is unique, designing rings that complement one another rather than matching exactly can be linked through a shared detail such as your metal choice or finish. These quiet, personal elements often become the most treasured part of the ring - because they're deeply meaningful to the couple.
Heart Over Hype
Focus on meaning rather than trends. Trends change, but sentiment lasts a lifetime. So take your time to reflect on your story and what you want your ring to represent. Choose quality craftsmanship, timeless design, and personal details that resonate with you - that’s what transforms a ring into a lifelong symbol of love.

Arecently released shark documentary, Apex Alley, highlights some of the work done by Ballito-based marine scientist Dr Ryan Daly.
Written and directed by award-winning producer Julie Laurenz, the beautifully filmed piece follows several shark species as they move along one of the ocean’s most remarkable marine corridors - the Benguela Current - travelling from Mozambique’s warm breeding waters to the kelp forests around Cape Town. It sparked our interest to learn more about Dr Ryan’s work and why it matters. As a senior marine scientist at the
Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI), Dr Ryan has built his career studying sharks and tracking their movements using advanced acoustic tagging technology across the western Indian Ocean - from the Southern Ocean to the Seychelles. Because most sharks don’t surface, Dr Ryan explains, satellite tags are often ineffective. The team instead relies on acoustic telemetry, underwater tags attached to sharks that transmit a unique ID code to acoustic receivers. “Acoustic telemetry is the bread and butter of tracking sharks because they work on all sharks and they last for up to 10 years,” Dr Ryan says.
words JaCqueline Herbst | photos dr ryan daly
These tags are detected by a growing network of receivers along the South African and Mozambican coastlines. As more partners join, the array continues to expand. The data is collated and distributed by the Acoustic Tracking Array Platform (ATAP), based in Makhanda and hosted by the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB). “This has been a really effective way to understand the long-term migrations and habitat use of sharks.” Dr Ryan’s research centres on the spatial ecology of sharks: their preferred habitats, migration routes, timing, how far they travel, whether they return to the same sites annually, and what drives these patterns - environment, food or reproduction.
His work focuses on the western Indian Ocean, with current projects in the Seychelles, Mozambique and South Africa. A large collaborative French initiative may extend this research to the Comoros, Mayotte, and other French Indian Ocean territories. Central to the success of his work, Dr Ryan says, is building long-term relationships with marine protected area managers and maintaining consistent data collection. “Going back to the same places again and again, those long-term relationships and the long-term data collection are really what makes the difference. It takes a long time to collect data on these very long-lived species - some bull sharks mature at 20 years old. So, to really understand what they do and improve conservation for them, you’ve got to put the time in - 10, 20 years, and you start to scratch the surface.” Dr Ryan’s work matters because sharks and rays are South Africa’s most threatened animal groups - more so than any reptiles, frogs or mammals. Their vulnerability
comes down to biology: they live long lives, mature slowly and produce very few young. As he explains, many species have shifted into endangered or critically endangered categories within his career, and two local sawfish species have disappeared entirely in South Africa since the 1990s due to habitat loss and overfishing. He stresses that people need to understand how much shark and ray numbers have declined, recognise the importance of the refuges they rely on, and support conservation efforts. Mapping species behaviour and migration corridors is essential for better protection.
A major part of Dr Ryan’s research also highlights the interconnectedness of the western Indian Ocean region. Countries share the same shark populations - there are no fences at sea. A single shark might support artisanal fishing in Mozambique, attract dive tourism in South Africa, and encounter shark nets for bather safety in the same waters. “They’re all the same animals,” he says.
His findings show how far-ranging species like bull and tiger sharks link ecosystems across the region. As top predators and keystone species, protecting them is critical to maintaining the health of the entire marine environment.

Ten years ago, Clyde and Des-Marié
Victor tied the knot and decided to keep things local for their honeymoon. No exotic islands or international escapes - just two blissful weeks in the scenic Cape, where they got to explore, unwind, and get to know each other's quirks without the chaos of daily life. Little did they know, their adventure would be filled with laughter, mishaps, and unforgettable moments.
The newlyweds flew into Cape Town, checked into a cosy hotel by the V&A Waterfront, and headed out for lunch at the Cape Town Fish Market. It was at that moment that the honeymoon almost ended before it even began - Clyde realised he'd lost his wedding ring! DesMarié burst out laughing at the sight of his pale face; thankfully, they were able to laugh it off (and eventually find a solution). This was just the start of their unconventional honeymoon.
While exploring Cape Town, they discovered that they liked (and disliked) exactly the same things, from breathtaking hikes to indulging in local flavours, every moment was a new discovery. Des-Marié recalls
one of the highlights was their trip up the Table Mountain, while in the cable car, the operator asked her what she does for a living, then declared, "You don’t look like a skelm!" when he heard that she was a Used Car Sales Manager.
“Planning was a breeze thanks to our agent at Pentravel, who put together a flawless package with flights, a rental car, and daily excursions.
Our honeymoon experience has definitely impacted our relationship - we've learned to roll with the punches and appreciate the little moments. We laughed, we stressed, and we navigated setbacks together,
and we wouldn't change a thing (except maybe packing more Dramamine for the wine pairing),” said Des-Marié.
While the couple loved Cape Town, they are people who thrive on new experiences, so they’ll be heading somewhere new for their next getaway. In the end, their honeymoon was the perfect blend of adventure, laughter, and love.
If you're planning a honeymoon, go for it - embrace the mishaps, savour the moments, and make it yours.
Honeymoon Survival Guide
• Pack Smart: Important documents, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, a powerbank, and outfits for planned activities. Pack lightweight, multipurpose items to save space.
• Handle Logistics: Confirm bookings, arrange airport transfers, and have cash for tips/emergencies. Inform staff at hotels and flights that you're on your honeymoon for potential perks.
• Unplug & Reconnect: Limit screen time to focus on each other.
• Don't Overdo It: Schedule rest days; the goal is relaxation, not rushing through activities.
• Be Flexible: Leave room for spontaneity and unplanned adventures.
• Communicate & Be Patient: Travel can be stressful, so be understanding with each other.
• Secure Valuables: Take off your wedding ring during adventurous activities to avoid losing it.
• Document Memories: Take photos to capture moments.
• Craft Moments: Plan special activities like private dinners or couple's massages to make it memorable.

Where every appointment is tailored to your hair’s personality
words MarisKa Moodley
I’ve been rocking these curls since day one, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. Growing up with naturally curly hair wasn’t always easy, but I eventually learned to love and embrace the wild, curly chaos that is my hair! So, when I was given this hair review, of course, the first thing I did was research the pros and cons of hair Botox for my hair type.
As Amy and I walked into Miss May’s salon, we were instantly wowed by the cutest light pink chairs that set a fun, but luxurious vibe.
“Miss May” herself sat down with us for a personal consultation, digging deep into our hair goals, what we love about our current style, and what we wanted to achieve. Amy chose a more natural, lived-in look. May began by applying
a professional bleach mix to her hair, carefully monitoring the process to lift her colour just right for the desired shade. I opted for a hair Botox treatment to tame my stubborn frizz and add serious shine. While we waited for the chemistry to work its magic, May treated us like royalty, serving mimosas and cupcakes.
Nonku, her right-hand woman, started my service with a thorough wash using a clarifying shampoo to strip away all the product build-up in my hair. My hair was then rinsed with cold water to lock in the treatment’s benefits, followed by a professional blow-dry that smoothed the cuticles. May then infused my hair with the Botox treatment, leaving it in a bit longer because my curly texture and
existing products needed extra time for full penetration - the treatment sat for a full 20 minutes before being rinsed out. To seal the miracle in, she finished with a careful straightening pass that left the product locked into every strand. After rinsing Amy’s bleach, she applied a precise root toner to perfect her colour balance.
Amy’s finished look turned out flawless, with bouncy curls plus a fresh trim that lifted her whole vibe, and my hair now feels silky, soft, and smooth - the frizz is gone, and the shine is next-level. We walked out of the salon feeling like brand-new people, literally transformed.
Miss May also runs an exquisite nail studio in the same space. Her decision to move to Ballito and open a smaller, intimate salon is all about giving each client undivided quality time and personalised attention, ensuring every experience feels like a luxurious, self-care ritual.

Arecent talk by South Africa’s own garden guru, Tanya Visser, at the Umhlali Garden Club dazzled us with just the right amount of inspiration to bring you this fun piece on growing your own wedding flowers. Now, we are by no means suggesting industrialscale growing of cut flowers for a grand wedding reception, but rather combinations of plants you can gather and grow at home in hanging baskets and pots to lend a personal touch to an intimate summer garden wedding on the North Coast.
If you’re looking for a plant that blooms year-round and effortlessly does its thing, look no further than the Fuchsia ‘Sundancer’. With its beautiful single flowers, the Fuchsia ‘Sundancer’ is a tough plant that loves a combination of sun and shade and does wonderfully in pots. Combine it with sweet potato (black leaf - specifically bred for its foliage) and a few lovely cascading Everillo ornamental grasses for a dramatic effect that instantly lifts any area. Tanya calls hanging pots the biggest cheat in the world because they allow plants to thrive with minimal effort. Thanks to its ability to

summer colour. They’re wonderfully flexible: ideal for mixed beds, stunning in containers where their flowers spill over the rim, and great for adding a gentle touch around bold plants such as cordylines. They also pair well with other perennials in compact townhouse spaces.
handle the KZN rain, Tanya’s first recommendation here is Supertunia Compact, self-cleaning (it naturally drops its faded flowers) and producing an abundance of blooms, this vigorous, low-maintenance type of petunia gives instant colour and works well in a large pot.
Another winner that has transformed South African gardens is SunPatiens. This true perennial flourishes in pots and beds, loves full sun and comes in a range of vibrant colours. A true perennial that Tanya highly
recommends is the spectacular Begonia Big Red Green Leaf. Expect bold, oversized flowers on lush, nicely branched plants. If it’s trusses of flowers you’re after, then Medinilla magnifica (also called rose grape) is just the plant to add romantic floral magic to your wedding venue. With beautifully textured leaves and long, arching stems that hold large pink blossoms, Medinilla is a showstopper. When the blooms open, they reveal clusters of delicate, tiny pink flowers inside. If you are looking for a tough plant that can handle sun, poor soil (even sand) and that flowers for most of the year, Coreopsis ‘Bengal Tiger’ is your go-to. For dramatic effect, pair it with Angelonia angustifolia. With their relaxed, branching form and stems lined with dainty, snapdragon-like blooms, angelonias bring exceptional
Because every container is bound to need a filler here and there, Tanya recommends Alaska Nasturtiums or golden sage. Alaska Nasturtiumswith their distinctive white-marbled foliage and brightly coloured flowers - are not only easy to grow and guaranteed to add pops of colour to your wedding, but have edible leaves that are exceptionally high in vitamin C and are a popular choice for salads and garnishes.
With a little bit of planning, the right plant combinations, and Tanya’s tried-and-tested advice, creating your own homegrown wedding blooms becomes less of a challenge and more of a joyful, creative journey. These hardy, vibrant plants offer beauty, personality and a touch of North Coast charm, ensuring your special day feels as personal and memorable as the love being celebrated.

If you think you know waffles, think again! The Waffle Society is out to prove that waffles can be more than a delicious dessert. Serving savoury and sweet combinations, breakfast, dinner and everything inbetween, they’re taking the path less travelled to bring something unique to Ballito. The pink, candy-striped café sits, catching the best of the ocean breeze as the smell of freshly ground coffee wafts through the space.
Embracing the warm summer weather, we opted for cooler, healthy drinks: a cocktail from their signature menu, a chai frappé, and the mint smoothie from Propa. Starting off with the most important meal of the day, their breakfast selection balances decadence with healthy options. The Rise & Shine is a great example, with dark chocolate and coconut
granola, fresh banana, berry compote, lime syrup, peanut butter crémeaux, yoghurt, accompanied by blueberry waffle bites. If a waffle doesn’t fit your vibe on that occasion, you can swap it out for sourdough toast like we did with the Smashin’ Avo; smashed avo, crumbly feta, crispy onions and a drizzle of hot honey makes for a wholesome breakfast.
The concept of savoury waffles had never appealed to me until the Corn Star and The Durban Bowl changed the way I see them forever. The corn, coriander, and mozzarella-stuffed waffle is a great base topped with lime and avocado mousse, salsa, charred corn, corn riblets and tortilla chips. All the waffles are beautifully and creatively presented and we heard several exclamations of delight as waffles were brought to neighbouring tables. For those looking for some heat, The Durban bowl is a
medium chicken curry served with a spiced potato & coriander waffle, carrot salad and sambas; a creative fusion of Indian flavours. If you prefer, there are also gluten-free and vegan options so you can enjoy your waffle your way. It’s safe to say that their signature Death by Chocolate and Unicorn waffles were the showstoppers of the afternoon! A chocolate waffle, piled with triple chocolate brownies, chocolate mousse, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, ice-cream, a chocolate spring roll and a condensed milk syringe was a treat for the chocolate lovers. Bright and colourful with candy floss, sprinkles, mini marshmallows, sour ribbons and an upturned cone served on top of a multicoloured rainbow waffle, the Unicorn is impossible to miss and a firm favourite with the kids!
Waffles After Dark brings waffles to the fore as an evening meal with smaller tapas-style waffles elevated with adventurous toppings and sophisticated flavour combinations designed to pair with their cocktail menu and gorgeous wine list. Only available Thursday to Saturday from 5-9 p.m., we will definitely be back for one of their Thursday Ladies’ Nights!
Do you find yourself reminiscing about “the good old days”? When we had more “freedom” to play and just be kids? Perhaps I’m giving my age away now. Humour aside, no season is exempt from challenges. Raising children now is very different from the past, but every era has its own kind of pressure or challenge. Parenting is an incredibly rewarding journey, but it can also be stressful.
Life has thrown all of us some curveballs in the last five years. We list the events quite casually, almost as though the trauma and horror of the pandemic, looting, and then flooding are something we are now almost detached from.
For each person, those three major events still bring back a range of emotions. For some, there has been healing. For others, there still needs to be healing. Time is not the healer; rather what we do with our time. But how is this related to the courage to say yes or no? What I have observed is that these events were an opportunity to reassess what is important in life, in relationships, and how we parent our children. Each family unit is unique and has a different way of connecting and living. Life would not be colourful if we all dressed the same, looked the same, and never disagreed. Through healthy conversations and hearing different perspectives, we have the opportunity to learn and grow.
Today’s world is overflowing with opinions, especially with the constant influence of social media. It’s easy
to find ourselves following those with the strongest voices on parenting and other topics. Sometimes, these voices add pressure, making us feel as though there’s a set formula for being a “good parent”. Other times, saying “no” when everyone is saying “yes” can be difficult, especially if those choices don’t resonate with what we feel is right and what we know is right for our family. When in doubt, I like to ask myself: “What is right for my family, my children, and my relationships right now?” Because every “yes” to one thing is a “no” to something else - perhaps even to your own instincts or needs. Choosing to say “no” when everyone else says “yes” takes courage, but it’s essential to remember that we all see the world through different lenses.
My intention isn’t to create debate or division, but rather to encourage you to focus on what truly matters to you and your family before succumbing to external pressures or expectations. Take time to pause. Give yourself permission to listen to your gut instinct and weigh whether a decision aligns with your personal and family’s goals, values, and beliefs. It’s okay to step back, reflect, and be intentional with your choices. That is true courage!

As we move into 2026, the North Coast property market is showing a steady, quality-driven rebound, creating genuine opportunities for homeowners, buyers and visitors alike. Broader national indicators point to a market that remains stable and fundamentally healthy, responding to improved confidence and lower interest rates. Locally, the North Coast is punching above that average, powered by balanced demand, scarce single-family rental stock, and a renewed appetite for lifestyle living.
Seasonality is back with substance
The usual first-quarter sales peak has shifted from predictable to pronounced: properties that sat for long periods are now transacting, reducing visible stock, and tightening competition for well-presented homes. This is not a frantic, headline-driven sprint but a disciplined market: buyers arrive well-informed, with access to detailed sales data, and clear expectations. They will pay market-related prices for value, but they quickly dismiss listings that appear overpriced. For homeowners, the message is clear - price appropriately and present impeccably, and you will benefit.
Quality sells
Homes showing excellent maintenance, considered design and inviting living spaces are moving faster and achieving stronger prices. Buyers are prioritising turnkey properties - where good bones, modern layouts and low immediate maintenance needs save time and money - so investments in sensible upgrades and staging are paying dividends. This dynamic favours sellers who focus on presentation and highlighting lifestyle elements, indoor-outdoor flow, entertaining spaces, small gardens, and proximity to coastal amenities. Homes equipped with high-speed fibre, solar panels, premium inverters, batteries, and with ample standby water attract interest from discerning investors. Being off-grid is becoming the norm rather than the exception for most new higher-end homes.
Demand today is broad-based across price points High-end homes continue to attract attention from local and migrating buyers seeking lifestyle and space, while mid-range family homes are buoyed by families relocating for life-cycle reasons and proximity to schools and amenities. Holiday-home purchases are on the rise again as more people rediscover the Coast’s appeal for getaways - supporting both sales and the short-let market. Rental markets are diverging, creating distinct opportunities for homeowners, buyers and visitors alike. Singlefamily rental stock is extremely tight, pushing premium rents higher and making a buy-to-let argument in this segment more compelling. At the other end, a surge in apartment and townhouse supply - particularly in the R1m-R3m capital value band from new developmentshas increased rental inventory and softened rental growth for those units. Investors should therefore be selective: premium, well-located family homes and holiday-ready properties appear strongest for income and capital gains; high-volume sectional-title developments, however, require a more nuanced yield analysis.
Large greenfield projects and master-planned mega estates are delivering impressive sales, reinforcing confidence in long-term demand, and attracting new families choosing the North Coast lifestyle over inland cities. That inward movement, combined with improving affordability prospects nationally, suggests the region could sustain momentum into 2026. What this means for homeowners and visitors: the North Coast is offering genuine value across property classes. Sellers who price sensibly and showcase quality will find eager, knowledgeable buyers. Buyers who seek well-maintained, thoughtfully designed homes in good locations can secure properties that deliver lifestyle benefits now and resilience in value over time. For visitors considering a move or an investment, the region’s mix of lifestyle appeal, constrained family rental stock, and active master planned communities makes 2026 an opportune year to invest.
