In a few months from now, Lorinda and I will have been residents of Ballito for 20 years. We moved back to the coast after spending 10 years in Pretoria, but in all our time growing up in Durban we’d never been to Ballito. We thought we’d settle in Umhlanga, but a small school with good old-fashioned values, a growing shopping centre and Woolworths swayed us in favour of Ballito.

We did a couple of trips down to look at properties and figure out where we would call home. We looked at a couple of estates but I’ll never forget meeting Ed and Willie at the Simbithi sales office, a counter on a hill, and being loaded into the 4x4s to take a look around the estate. There were no roads there yet and only one or two of the dams were completed, but already most of the stands were sold out! I remember looking around trying to imagine how this was all going to transition into what Ed and Willie were pitching.

Fast forward 20 years and Simbithi is one of the flagship estates in the country. We’ve been blessed to work with them for almost all of those 20 years and have

been privy to how the team has grown and evolved, building on those that have laid the foundations, literally, before them. Simbithi is a stunning place to live. It has an exceptional ethos and set the tone for many of the other residential estates in the area.

What a milestone! The FabMags team congratulates Simbithi on their 20 th anniversary and we look forward to watching the next 20 years ahead.

Other local legends featured in this edition are none other than the Michielins. Brett and Lesley have really made their mark around Ballito and the inspiring duo literally feeds our community. Brett has also shown us how you can be an astute businessman and still have a great sense of humour, often sharing his antics online. Brett and Lesley are part of a strong restaurant community in Ballito and, along with their fellow restaurateurs, have set a food standard that is genuinely top-notch considering the size of our town.

How great is it that the place we live has grown and evolved, is full of variety and diversity and always has a little bit of added spice… and I’m not even talking about our local food scene! Here’s to loving Ballito and all that it offers.

Enjoy this edition and we look forward to connecting again soon.

God bless.

After picking the Sauvignon Blanc grapes, they were crushed and the juice was settled at 8°C before being racked and cold fermented at 13°C in stainless steel tanks to retain the wine’s freshness and aromatics. After fermentation, a conservative amount of Shiraz was added to get a nice light salmon colour and a fresh, attractive palate. GREAT PRETENDER

Let your thoughts loose and take a stroll with me. Think about how often you can relate to a story from a friend when they reveal the struggles they are facing. Do you hear and meet their struggle with your vulnerability and struggles?

Think about all the different areas in your own life: family, work, rest, finance, exercise, spiritual life, friendships and mental health. Are there any areas that you feel “the struggle is real”? Do you let anyone see into your struggles? Or do you play the “Great Pretender” as if you have it all under control? Is it because we have become so disconnected from showing our real selves to the world or the tears that well up in our eyes when things get tough, and then push them away with the thought of “I must be strong”? Here is a new thought: letting our tears flow shows greater strength than holding them in.

As South Africans, we find a way to take the lemons life gives us and instantly turn them into a Bakers Lemon Cream biscuit! We have all the knowledge we could ask for at our fingertips but nothing beats the answer we trust, which starts with “ME TOO”. It gives the feeling of “I'm not alone in my struggles”. This is what community and friendships are built on: hearing and seeing the weakness and fixing it together - not covering it up and hoping it will disappear.

Our Western society is driven by celebrity lifestyles where we reward the 'pretenders' and then devour any rumours and news about them that reveal what we already know: that they are normal!

Look out in your next conversation for a "ME TOO" moment and see how it changes you. It's probably the most freeing emotion out there. It does so much for the human soul to hear it out loud from someone else - that their family also has disagreements and that we all cheated somewhere in life, lied, hated, taken someone else's turn, felt frustrated, depressed and at some stage want to give up and run away. At the end of the day, it helps to know that, yes, you aren't alone!

If you think you are the only one who's suffered a failure, embarrassment, rejection or exclusion, I am here to tell you ME TOO! We are all mistake-makers and imperfect. You are in a community of humans all living and feeling these emotions throughout life's ups and downs.

Say no to the Great Pretender and yes to the "ME TOO" moments. It will change you.

AS SOUTH AFRICANS, WE ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO TAKE THE LEMONS LIFE GIVES US AND INSTANTLY TURN THEM INTO A BAKERS LEMON CREAM BISCUIT

COVER STORY

Food is a big part of our Ballito community, with so many incredible restaurants where people can come together, creating long-lasting memories over a great meal.

Meet Brett and Lesely Michielin, two restaurantier pillars in our town whose food is loved far and wide by not just locals but annual holidaymakers as well.

Brett, who is originally from Durban, was previously living in Johannesburg and wanted to return to the coast. In 2007, he decided to make the move, and choosing Ballito was a no-brainer.

Born in South Africa, Lesley grew up in Botswana, living there for 23 years with her parents. She then moved to Johannesburg after finishing her studies, where she started working in restaurants. “Hospitality eventually led me to our beautiful coastal town, where I met Brett,” Lesley reminisces. The happy couple then got married in May 2017 and soon after gave birth to their son, James.

Brett runs the Mozambik Restaurant Group. The decked-out Mozambik Restaurant in Ballito Village is his prized possession, staying true to the Porto Afro-style food and ambience of Mozambique. They offer a delicious variety from prawns and pregos to peri-peri flat chicken and so much more. Lesley is the proud owner of Burnedale Bistro Restaurant & Venue in Umhlali. This enchanting space has a wide menu offering burgers, steaks, fish, prawns, savoury and sweet waffles and the most delicious, freshly made cakes and treats.

So, how did this amazing, busy couple get into the local food industry? “In 2007, I bought shares into the first Mozambik in Ballito. In 2009, I bought my partner out and we opened our second store in Benoni in 2010. It took some time for the brand to take off, but when it did, it rocketed. COVID was a turning point and we expanded into Southern Africa. We have tripled the group since 2020,” Brett says proudly. For Lesley, after running a few restaurants and function venues, an opportunity arose in August 2020 to be an owner and partner in the now Burnedale Bistro.

| 21 WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

Nothing makes Brett happier than cooking. “I love the Ballito community. It takes a village to raise a child (and a restaurant!)… that village is Ballito!” Lesley’s childhood love for baking was passed down from her mum, which reignited as she grew older. Sharing her timeless family recipes with guests brings her immense joy.

She thrives on the challenge of creating new dishes, seeing it as a canvas for flavour exploration.

As a family of foodies, Brett, Lesley and James enjoy exploring eateries, supporting local flavours and creating memorable dining experiences at their restaurants. “We strive to offer a warm welcome, delicious food and excellent service,

fostering a sense of community where lasting friendships are forged over meals,” Lesley adds.

Their family circle extends past their home to their amazing staff and teams. “Without them, we wouldn't have the restaurants. They are beside us every day and we strive to support them with all that we do. They are the beating hearts of our restaurants.”

As a couple who are both in the same industry and run their own restaurants,

22 | WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
“There's something magical about seeing people be transported back in time with each bite. Hospitality creates a fire in me. It's extremely exciting and never the same every day.”

you may wonder whether they work well together or if it’s best to keep everything separate. “We support each other as much as we can, but I think I'm the stubborn one and Brett says I don't listen (haha!). His famous saying is ‘I think I've won!’ (I do let him win sometimes),” Lesley says. However, for Lesley, Brett is her pillar of strength and a great mentor. “He is a brilliant restauranteur with a huge heart of gold for us as a family as well as this incredible community we live in.”

With daily motivation, their passion for food and the most important ingredient, love, this family continues to contribute to the fantastic foodie scene on the North Coast.

One Place, Many Tastes

Every weekend and public holiday from 8 a.m. till 3 p.m., you can indulge all your senses at an amazing outdoor space filled to the brim with vendors bringing you a shopping and eating experience like no other. Ballito Farmers Market is a vibrant and bustling market with various food vendors for you to choose from, making it the perfect spot for an out-of-this-world food safari, enjoying several meals from various spots. Come along with us on our recent foodie journey!

We started the day off with breakfast, choosing different options from a few vendors. At The Orange Tree, we grabbed their popular Fancy Bacon Roll filled with a fried egg, crispy bacon, caramelised onions, chilli jam and hollandaise mayo - as well as a chicken and mayo jaffle (a round, sealed toasted sandwich) from 3 Gen Jafflesperfect for an easy breakfast. A must-have is Yoli’s Breakfast Bun, served on a brioche bun and filled with crispy bacon bits, a fried egg, delicious herbed butter and sauce. We grabbed creamy iced coffees from Science of Coffee and feasted on the delicious start to our adventure.

After a much-needed digestive break and some time spent browsing the various stalls offering clothing, toys, beauty products and other goodies, we headed back to eye out what was for lunch. A crispy chicken wrap is always a great go-to and Oak provides

to a greater community with their Halaal certification. The most exciting part of any market is finding unique food dishesenter The Smokin’ Barrel! From a cleverly titled menu, we were intrigued to try their Bangin’ Brisket Burger, slow-cooked pulled beef brisket on a bed of tangy slaw with smoky BBQ sauce, served on a brioche bun. Chef Rum knows exactly how to satisfy vegans and vegetarians with their fresh falafel salads (or you can take it as a wrap) with handmade falafels and artisanal tahini sauce with a drizzle of mild chilli.

Whether you visit the market for breakfast or lunch, you can also find so many spots with great snacks to enjoy while you browse the retail spaces. Offering sweet and savoury bites, A Taste of Portugal will have what you crave. You must try their mouth-watering prawn, chicken, sweet corn or spinach and feta Rissois - these are their top sellers so get them while they are hot! You can also nibble on traditional Portuguese treats, from pasteis de nata and pasteis de coco to farturas (churros), cavacas and so much more.

What’s next to drink? Bubble, bubble, pop! Ballito Farmers Market has many vendors pouring the most refreshing beverages, but we had to try a Watermelon High from Bobar, a fizzy bubble tea with bursting boba. If you’re not looking for fizz, then the Strawberry and Peach Iced Tea Bubble Tea from Bamboo Bar will quench your thirst.

| 25 WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

For something even more unique, there’s Sugarcane Juice Bar. That’s right, sugarcane juice! Fresh sugarcane pressed through a juicer with a few slices of lime to create a drink every sweet tooth will love. For our healthy locals, Vovo’s has you covered. I sipped on a healthy juice to aid my immune system, especially after the day's food escapade.

If you’re over 18 and want something boozy, The Pumphouse is the place to start. We could not say no to their classic Aperol Spritz and Scarlet G&T to cool down while enjoying the music. You can also be adventurous and try their draughts of local beers and ciders!

Final stop… dessert! We started ‘stark’ (strong) with Bavarian Nut Works and their tantalising vanilla, cinnamon and sugar-roasted glazed nuts. At Spritz4U, we indulged in their irresistible Spritzkuchen - soft puffs in their original glaze, cinnamondipped, coconut-dusted or coffee-drenched. You can’t leave without a bag of their oldfashioned, handmade cookies to pair with your morning coffee - you won’t regret it!

A HUGE thank you to the Ballito Farmers Market and its amazing vendors for coming together to create this foodtastic adventure for our April edition!

Next door, you’ll find a child’s dreams, J’s Temptation, adorned with fun sugar cookies, colourful macarons, baked treats and a classic favourite, pancakes! We had to get their milk tart and banoffee pancakes, and my, oh, my, what a treat! A new edition to the market is Choux Eclairs. From classic chocolate eclairs to their signature flavours, you’re in for a surprise. A must-try is their Paris Brest, an eclair made in honour of the Tour de France in the shape of a wheel. On a hot day, nothing is better than gelato! Grab an irresistible scoop or two from Salt Rock Gelato to hit that sweet spot and dream about a summer day in Italy.

And just like that, we munched our way through Ballito Farmers Market from breakfast and lunch to dessert and everything in between! I hope this inspires you to head down to the market soon and indulge in all their delicious delights.

Eco Estate
Simbithi
NORTH COAST A bespoke property service for discerning homeowners
Zimbali Lakes

SIMBITHI TURNS 20

Locals, old and new, will undoubtedly agree that there is no Ballito without Simbithi Eco-Estate. Launched in April 2004, this innovative Estate has grown alongside our hometown, firmly planting its roots as a pioneer in eco-estate living and a consistent market leader. Now, 20 years later, Simbithi celebrates an impressive milestone with its thriving community of residents, to recognise how far it’s come.

Where were you in 2004? Simbithi’s developers were looking out over fields of sugarcane and dreaming of

the unprecedented Estate they were planning to create. “One of our earliest homeowners said to me that they used to stand on their cars to see over the sugarcane!” says Jodi Chetty, Simbithi’s Marketing and Communications CoOrdinator. “But, the developers and original board members had a vision.”

Today, Simbithi is 430 hectares of lush greenery, stunning homes, glistening dams, community centres and an 18-hole golf course, with roughly 8000 residents calling it home. Although 20 years may be considered ‘old’ in some circles, the Simbithi team prefers

28 | WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

the word ‘wise’. “Our age is a strength, not a weakness, because it means we have wisdom and experience. We’ve made mistakes and we’ve learnt from them,” adds Jodi. “There are people still living in Simbithi who moved in 20 years ago, and some of our staff have been working here for over 15 years. We’re clearly doing something right.”

That something is definitely the community-centric ethos of the Estate. Simbithi believes in building and bringing together. Everyone knows their neighbours, guards greet residents by name, and children play together in the parks. It’s these friendly elements that make the Estate special. Whole generations of families have chosen to make Simbithi their home, highlighting that there is a place for everyone within this Estate.

And, despite the immense growth in residents over the last two decades, they have still managed to keep the community

close-knit. Most streets end in a culde-sac, encouraging neighbourhoods to create their own ‘little communities’ that interact with each other. “What also makes Simbithi unique is our five community centres,” adds Jodi. “Wherever you live, there is one close by. Residents are bound to see someone they know at their ‘local’ centre!”

The regular events that have taken place over the years have also played a large role in bringing people together. Whether it’s the annual Easter Egg Hunt or Friday night live music at the Country Club, the Simbithi team is deliberate about building community. “You have the tranquillity and privacy, but it’s difficult not to get swept up in the magic of the Simbithi community,” Jodi says proudly.

This is the beautiful legacy Simbithi EcoEstate has built over 20 years. Residents and the HOA (SEEHOA) work together

to curate a welcoming environment and keep evolving the Estate so it only gets better and better. #SimbithiStrong

Naturally, Simbithi will be marking the occasion with those who call it home. A whole weekend of celebrations is planned with 2000s-themed events, including a Lumo-MTV Disco and Shrek and Incredibles movie screenings for the kids. On 7 April, the Estate honours their ‘official’ birthday with a range of festivities, ending off with cutting the birthday cake.

Although this incredible Estate is recognising this momentous achievement, this is only one part of the Simbithi story, with many milestones on the way as it grows and evolves. Within the last year, Simbithi has inculcated its strategy, undergirded by a mission for pre-eminence as a residential eco-estate in Southern Africa. In addition, all the Estate does is geared towards a vision of guaranteeing its sustainability along the values of integrity, commitment, accountability, respect and excellence.

TIMELESS, CLASSIC DESIGN NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE

Understated, traditional design interiors never go out of style. By mixing classical design with a neutral colour palette, some key pieces, and a fantastically functional layout that considers the architectural style of your home, you are on your way to timeless spaces.

Stay away from ‘being fashionable’. There is nothing wrong with experimenting with new trends or fads, but one way of effortlessly updating your classic design is to layer, layer, layer! Having a neutral, simplistic foundational design scheme allows you to introduce trends into your space.

Whether you want to change up the mood, have a seasonal aesthetic or add a new trend you just love, bring your scheme subtly up to date with accessories and accents.

Consider wallpaper, different fabrics, soft furnishings and lighting – all these can be cleverly introduced without overpowering your original classic theme.

Texture: Textured walls and soft furnishings add interest and character to a space.

Metallics: These never go out of style, particularly when used sparingly or to offset traditional forms or furniture.

Velvets: Lush, plush and luxurious!

Natural, Sustainable Materials: Add warmth by incorporating glass, bamboo and sustainable woods into your space. These are naturally built to last.

Timeless design is, at its core, a creation that remains eternally relevant. Defy trends and remain aesthetically and functionally enduring!

With 30 years of good standing in the interior design world, the OLALA INTERIORS team celebrates their journey with responsive and mindful design. Their attention to detail and luxury design expertise allow them to create the perfect habitat for discerning clients.

Decadent, delicious and gourmet - The Cookie Collab creates mouth-watering ‘cookies with attitude’ with only the best ingredients. We chat with founders Chris and Clarissa about their unique business and sweet creations.

TELL US WHAT THE COOKIE COLLAB IS ALL ABOUT

The Cookie Collab is a cookie company nestled in the heart of Ballito that specialises in giant gourmet cookies. We offer a wide range of flavours and fillings to create the ultimate cookie experience for our customers.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND STARTING THE COOKIE COLLAB?

Having both spent some time overseas and being lovers of all things sweet, we were inspired by the traditional New York cookie that is so loved by the locals in America. We stumbled across a company that made over-thetop, gourmet, stuffed cookies and decided we needed to bring that same

36 | WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA

TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE TEAM BEHIND YOUR INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS COOKIES

The Cookie Collab was founded by a husband and wife team with very different career backgrounds and an entrepreneurial spirit. As a small business, we handle everything from product development to production and logistics between the two of us. Chris is responsible for day-to-day operations and sales, while Clarissa is focused more on marketing and finance.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AND YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Not eating all the cookies! On a serious note, our biggest challenge has been learning how to manage a work-life balance. Time management has been of the utmost importance for us because, apart from the cookie business, we also run another business, and one of us actually has a full-time job.

As far as our biggest achievement goes, I think the business in itself is a huge achievement for us. We started it during COVID when many other businesses around us were struggling to stay afloat. On top of that, neither of us had ever even baked a cookie before we decided to start this venture! We’ve had to learn every aspect of what we do along the way, and we’re proud of how far we’ve come.

WHICH FLAVOUR COOKIE IS THE FIRST YOU EVER CREATED, AND WHICH FLAVOUR IS THE MOST POPULAR TODAY?

The OG cookie is our Pecan Nutella cookie, which is still a popular choice among our customers today. We based this off the traditional choc chip cookie and added a Nutella twist. This cookie is the perfect combination of crispy and chewy, loaded with a creamy, sweet Nutella centre. Currently, our most popular cookie is definitely our Salted Caramel Brownie cookie, which is a decadent

chocolate cookie, filled with chocolate chunks, with a gooey brownie centre drizzled with salted caramel.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER ENTREPRENEURS LOOKING TO START A BUSINESS, ESPECIALLY IN THE FOODIE INDUSTRY?

Just give it a go! You never really know what you’re capable of until you try, so if there’s something in your heart that you’d love to do, go for it! Before starting The Cookie Collab, we would never have imagined that we would end up where we are now. You don’t need to have all the answers upfront, but with enough hard work and dedication, you’ll figure it all out.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE COOKIE COLLAB?

2024 is going to be a big year for us. We’re working on expanding our current offering, as well as growing our team. We also have something super exciting in the pipeline which we can’t share just yet, but be sure to keep an eye on our social media for the big announcement!

| 41 WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA Join us as we visit the stylish new section of Ballito Junction Regional Mall and the delectable food options it offers.

Last year, Ballito Junction Regional Mall completed an impressive refresh, providing us with a whole new section of the mall to enjoy. With the modern design bringing in new tenants and highlighting the well-known ones who have been there for years, we explore the inspired piazza of Ballito Junction.

Walking through the renovated area, you will notice the expanse of glass separating the indoor and outdoor sections, still allowing for those on the inside to enjoy the view outside. This area was designed with multi-purpose use in mind. The team aimed to create a space where business and leisure could co-exist.

With the inclusion of Workshop17, a flexible working space that is the first branch for KwaZulu-Natal, people can work, eat and shop all in one place!

The attractive space invites you to explore and indulge in the delicious offerings enclosed within the centre’s revitalised design, inspired by the rest of the mall. Modern lines and glass create an enclosed space that is welcoming to young and old, busy and relaxed. The outdoor seating area offers room to pause, enjoy the beautiful Ballito sunshine, snack on treats and engage with friends.

Walking around the piazza, you are greeted by restaurant classics RocoMamas and Nando’s, national and beloved brands known for their family-friendly atmospheres and familiar dishes.

Joining the host of foodie options on the outside is the ever-popular coffee brand Starbucks (the first one in Ballito) bringing its iconic selection to our community. You can grab a cup of their world-class coffee and a little snack to go with it while taking in the laid-back atmosphere and elegant interior. Booba Beautea, characterised by its signature pink floral decor, brings flavourful boba tea drinks to you. Every drink is made fresh and comes in adorable takeaway cups! They also have sweet treats like mochi and cake available.

For those with a sweet tooth, there’s the vibrant Krispy Kreme store. They have their almost irresistible range of doughnuts on display ready to tempt on your next cheat day! Whether it’s their signature or limited edition doughnut, they bring the glazed

goodness. If you’re looking for some fresh bakes or artisan bread, Tip Top Bakery has got you covered. With an Italian background, they make sure every item is of top quality and the proof is certainly in the pudding. Grab a slice of cake to reward yourself or a sandwich made with fresh whole wheat bread to keep up the energy on the go.

Previously known as Piccadilly Cafe, Catia’s is certainly a highlight of the piazza. This beautiful eatery brings the same quality of food well-known

in Ballito with a new look. From freshly brewed coffee, scrumptious breakfasts, wholesome lunches and hearty dinners, every meal is phenomenal. Settle in and savour the attention to detail in the decor and lighting - no moment is anything less than amazing.

With all of these great foodie options, and more on the way, the piazza at Ballito Junction has something for everyone.

Day in the Life of a Working in ballito Private Chef

As someone who doesn’t like to spend time in the kitchen, having someone cook delicious, nutritious meals for me three times a day would be a dream come true. Private chef Zazi Gwagwa does exactly that, translating her passion for food into cooking out-of-this-world dishes for people in the comfort of their own homes.

Durban-born Zazi is currently Joburgbased but often travels nationwide for various jobs. This last December, she landed a gig as a private chef in Ballito for a local family. We had to get the rundown of her experience and day-to-day life in our hometown!

“My culinary pursuits began with loving food as a child. As a Food Network fanatic, I embraced all things culinary, borrowing cookbooks from my school library and trying different recipes out in our family home,” says Zazi. After catering for family events, she decided to pursue the career professionally. She now runs a catering company with her sister concurrently with her private chef gigs.

The Ballito job entailed cooking daily meals for the family: breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between. “I would buy groceries based on the menu I curated. My client hosted friends and family quite regularly so I was able to have a lot of fun experimenting in the kitchen,” she adds.

So what does a day in the life of a private chef in Ballito look like? Zazi woke up at 6 a.m. to get ready and prepare the daily menu. At 7 a.m., she started with

44 | WWW.THEBALLITOMAGAZINE.CO.ZA
WORDS JORDYN TROLLIP

breakfast, which could be anything from smoothies to a full warm breakfast.

After the first meal of the day was served, she headed to the shops to get extra ingredients for lunch, dinner, snacks and the next day’s breakfast (you may have spotted her at our local Woolies!).

When 11 a.m. rolled around, it was time to start with lunch, followed by a short break. She started with preparations for dinner at 3 p.m., serving it at around 7 p.m. She then tended to last-minute requests, from a scoop of ice cream and hot tea to a snack platter, and clocked out at 10 p.m. Talk about a long day!

Despite it being long hours, she loved that she got to cook every day. “As a caterer, I never really get the opportunity to execute my own menus every single day, and this job allowed me to do that. It pushed my creativity because I have a distinctive cooking style but was often challenged to consider things like dietary restrictions which forced me to think outside the box.”

Luckily in the modern world we live in, there is no shortage of inspiration! Zazi often gets innovative ideas for meals from other chefs on social media. “Ballito is also so gorgeous. I was often inspired by my beautiful surroundings to craft easy-breezy, healthy meals,” she explains.

As any foodie would, Zazi also made time to explore the North Coast’s food scene during her time here, and she was blown away. “Ballito is a foodie’s dream! From eclectic cafes to trendy and sophisticated restaurants, there’s no craving one can’t fulfil.” Some of her highlights were grabbing an after-work drink at The Barrel, popping into Coffee LAB for a quick pick-me-up latte, and an incredible dinner at Yori Oki, which has since become her favourite restaurant in South Africa!

Although it was hard work, Zazi loved her time in Ballito and will be back soon, cooking up memorable meals for her local clients. Check out her Instagram to keep updated on all her culinary expeditions!

With so many amazing food spots known for their fries in Ballito, we decided to try out a variety of fries that we have all over town. From classic skinny fries to zucchini fries, we have them all!

Spud-Tacular

Located in Beach Wood Boutique Hotel and Resort, Skippies Restaurant and Bar is well-known for its great food, creative drinks and relaxed atmosphere. Their fresh potato skinny fries definitely match the vibe. They’re light, crispy and well-seasoned, and there’s a satisfying crunch with every bite. Great for accompanying your meal or for being snacked on while sipping on a refreshing drink and enjoying the view. Grab a bowl or basket - they’re worth it!

Sweet & Savoury

Sweet potato fries have been my favourite form of fried goodness for a while now, and Toast’s skin-on sweet potato fries are a great balance of sweet and tangy. They’re fresh and delicious, served with seasoning on the side, promoting a lower sodium intake. Don’t forget about the creamy aioli, made in-house with a special recipe, which is a great dipping companion and super addictive! If sweet potato fries aren’t your thing, they also have chunky-cut potato fries available which just make you feel warm and fuzzy inside!

Say “Cheese”!

I’m always blown away by how creative people can be with food. Street Food, in The Market, makes halloumi fries that are out of this world. Crumbed, deep fried and served in the iconic enamel mugs with a herby mayonnaise dip, you’ll find yourself fighting over the last one. While it’s crunchy on the outside, it’s wonderfully smooth and soft on the inside. With or without the dip, I could munch on them forever! The blend of salty and tangy flavours works together to create a tasty experience.

Fully Loaded

You gotta love those classic, hand-cut potato chips, but Big D’s Burgers, a takeaway in Ballito Village, puts their own delicious twist on your favourite fries. They have four variations of ‘loaded fries’ to choose from: chicken, beef, beef and jalapeno and bacon - all of them served with a signature cheese sauce! The bacon variation, a local favourite, is made with fresh chips and crispy bacon pieces. The tantalising aroma greets you and stays with you as you enjoy each chip!

Big D’s Burgers

Zesty Zucchini

Taso’s Bar and Grill Ballito knows good food and memorable experiences like the back of their hand. And their zucchini (aka baby marrow or courgette) fries are no exception. Made in two styles, a softer variation or a crispier option, and served with three dipping sauces (mayo, tempura and chilli), you can enjoy the fries on their own or with their accompanying condiments. Coated in Taso’s special blend of spices, these zucchini fries hit the spot every time.

To long-time locals, it comes as no surprise that things have changed on the North Coast. Over the last two decades, we’ve gone from fields of sugarcane decorating our hills to magnificent complexes, estates and retail spaces. Rainmaker Marketing delves into the specifics of this growth and the stats behind it.

Ballito and Salt Rock, nestled along the picturesque North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, have undergone a profound evolution over the past two decades. What were once serene coastal villages, have blossomed into vibrant residential suburbs and sought-after holiday destinations, captivating both residents and visitors alike with their exceptional lifestyle offerings. Stefan Botha, Director

of Rainmaker Marketing, believes this journey of growth and development solidifies their status as some of South Africa’s best-performing suburbs.

The burgeoning Ballito and adjacent Salt Rock areas’ increasing popularity comes down to several factors, including their desirable infrastructure and amenities.

The influx of people to the North Coast is mostly driven by quality schooling options,

prime healthcare facilities, multiple retail malls and centres and the management of urban precincts. Moreover, Ballito and Salt Rock boast Blue Flag beaches at Blythedale, Willard and Thompson’s Bay, adding to their allure as a premier coastal destination.

POPULATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

In tandem with its rising reputation,

Ballito and Salt Rock have experienced exponential population and economic growth, with approximately 102 adults moving into the area each month, equivalent to around 41 families per month. Property values have surged over the past decade, with both residential and visitor populations doubling in size.

Across all property types, an average of 858 sales per year have been recorded over four years since August 2020, reflecting robust growth and sustained demand in Ballito’s real estate sector. According to Rainmaker Marketing’s recent North Coast Property report, estates hold a significant share of the market, constituting 44% of Ballito’s 8927 homes, with 57% of Salt Rock homes being within an estate. Topperforming estates include Brettenwood Coastal Estate, Dunkirk Estate, Ballito Groves, Ballito Hills, Simbithi Eco Estate, Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate and Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate - among others, have been instrumental in driving this surge, being developed within the last 20 years.

The diversity of housing options is striking, with freehold properties making up 39% of properties. According to Rainmaker Marketing data, the average price of a sectional title unit within an estate exceeds those outside of estates by 48%, indicating a growing demand for secure addresses with lifestyle amenities. Sales of freehold properties within estates have surged by an impressive 144%, highlighting the appeal of these communities.

PROPERTY MARKET

The real estate market in KZN’s North Coast has seen remarkable activity, such as with Phase 1 of Bliss Ballito achieving a 100% sell-out within three months of its launch. Developers like True North, Balwin Properties, IFA and Collins Residential Group among others have played a significant role in shaping the real estate landscape along the North Coast, attracting keen interest from investors and potential residents - more especially with new developments such as Zimbali Lakes Resort, Lalela Estate and Seaton Estate adding value to the Ballito and Salt Rock nodes.

The climbing property figures are indicative of a positive trajectory and continued growth in Ballito and Salt Rock’s property sectors. This growth is not only beneficial for investors but also for residents who witness the enhancement of their community and lifestyle offerings.

INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The growth of Ballito and Salt Rock extends beyond its property market to its burgeoning community and infrastructure. Privately managed water supplies, efficient urban management and quality lifestyle amenities have enhanced the areas’ appeal. Sustainable initiatives, supported by a strong business community and a thriving chamber of commerce, are expected to fuel further growth, solidifying the North Coast as a thriving economic hub.

INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT

Substantial international investment within the North Coast node has offered a

diverse range of products across various affordability brackets. The collaboration between Club Med and Collins Residential Consortium has ignited significant growth. The R2.2 billion investment in Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari is poised to contribute to significant job creation, attract international visitors, and enhance infrastructure. Additionally, upcoming interchange upgrades, such as the Sheffield Beach project, signify a commitment to ongoing development and upliftment in the area.

As Ballito and Salt Rock continue to evolve and thrive, they solidify their position as premier destinations for residents and investors alike. With sustainable initiatives, robust infrastructure development and a thriving business community, I believe the North Coast is poised to remain a resilient, growing area with much to offer.

MAHINDRA ARRIVES IN BALLITO

Part of the CMH offering found in Moffat Drive, the local dealership is now able to service Mahindra’s loyal North Coast customers as well as competitively compete in what has been a unique shift in demand in the local SUV market, where Mahindra is already a top contender.

The dealership offered me the new XUV700 to test drive and review, which is a stunning vehicle and another significant improvement for Mahindra, once again raising the level of build quality, refinement and comfort to the range. I’ve been interested in the players who’ve been offering “far more car at far more affordable prices”, and I have to say my time behind the wheel of this 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol vehicle left me very impressed.

I’m not going to unpack the deep technical specs of the XUV700 - that’s why Ryan and his team are there - but I will cover its overall performance, comfort and some of its key features all in the context of driving in and around the North Coast. Performance-wise, the XUV700 ticks the boxes, and easily so. The automatic gearbox is smooth and transitions well, getting the balance of hold and switch just right. That’s

important when driving around town as we navigate interesting switches between traffic circles, speed bumps, potholes and an array of lane merges with taxis in traffic hour! The XUV700 delivers the power needed for quick, sharp overtaking to get around trucks and taxis but also serves up a really elegant, comfortable and smooth ride when you get to open it up a little on the freeway.

Internally, there is so much on offer. The seat quality is amazing with stylish trim and loads of comfort. Legroom is always important in a family car for drop-off-and-go or loading up for sports matches - here there are no hassles. The XUV700 is a configurable seven-seater, with two folding seats in the boot. We kept the car in the five-seat configuration which gives you ample storage space to handle suitcases, shopping and golf bags… combined! If you were ever worried about the Mahindra finishes, don’t be. We could not fault the interior at all and felt that it punched way above its class and price point. The 2.0T AX7 L comes with a gorgeous panoramic roof, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and almost full dash digital displays. The two USB ports and wireless charging pad help keep fighting at bay when it comes to charging.

I enjoyed, and properly tested out, all 12 speakers of the Sony audio system. The feature list goes on with keyless entry and start, reach adjustment for the steering column, wireless charging pad, 360-degree cameras and additional safety equipment, including a knee airbag, blind-spot monitor and adaptive cruise control system, just to name a few.

Summary, you ask? Mahindra is definitely a contender and with exceptional build quality, loads of features on offer and a slick, modern design style, I believe it's claiming its positioning at the front of the pack for alternative SUV brands. Plus, it’s right here in Ballito, so if you want to try one out you simply need to head on down to CMH Mahindra.

Small Steps for Big Changes

With the new year starting at a blurringly fast rate, here we are, with Easter and Mother’s Day on our calendars. At the beginning of a new year or a new chapter, we often reflect and set our intentions for what is to come. Some of us may feel like we have missed that opportunity and already settled back into our old ways again.

Fear not! Easter also signifies new beginnings, and Mother’s Day reminds us of who and what is really important in our lives. Each new day offers us the opportunity to choose differently than we typically do.

These intentions, resolutions or goals are often focused on health or fitness. Let it be known that a small, sustainable change can have a big effect in the long term - much more so than a drastic change that only lasts a short few days or weeks.

Perhaps it looks like taking a walk with your family to go searching for the Easter bunny. Weight-bearing

exercise is beneficial for bone density, yet walking is low-impact and thus joint-friendly. Or, how about going for a swim with your mom? The water offers a welcome relief not only from the heat but also from gravity. Buoyancy provides a wonderful feeling of weightlessness, while the water gives gentle resistance to the muscles which can aid in strengthening. Not to mention, keeping your breath underwater is a wonderful workout for your lungs, too. Or perhaps you have a young family who enjoys cycling or padel – an afternoon outdoors will ensure wonderful vitamin D from the sunlight, as well as memories made.

Exercise is medicine. Motion is lotion. These are a few of the catchphrases you may have seen or heard in the media. But it is so true. No longer is bed rest prescribed. Instead, mobility is encouraged, even in a case of injury or even post-surgery. Moving about has all sorts of benefits from circulation and metabolism to an improved mental state.

So go for it! Make that choice – whether prompted by a significant event or a sunrise – you have the choice to move more than yesterday. If your day didn’t start out right, you can still choose to make the rest of it much better. It’s all about those small, sustainable steps. physiostella@yahoo.com

IV DRIP ZONE SALT ROCK

In recent times, individuals have increasingly prioritised self-care across various aspects of their well-being, encompassing both physical appearance and internal health. The most recent trend in our town is IV (intravenous) drips, a minimally invasive procedure offering a diverse array of nutrients and benefits for overall health and revitalisation. By delivering nutrients and fluids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system, IV drips enable rapid and effective absorption, ensuring targeted nourishment.

Seeking a rejuvenating experience, we visited IV Drip Zone Salt Rock. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by two nurses who provided health forms for us to complete. Seated in comfortable armchairs amidst a tranquil atmosphere filled with soothing instrumental music, each of us selected a drip tailored to our specific needs. Amy and Natasha opted for the Jet Fuel (All-inOne) drip, a comprehensive infusion designed to enhance energy, mood, immune function, performance and skin tone, while also facilitating detoxification and hydration.

Cristina, feeling slightly under the weather, chose the Detox drip, which

aimed at removing toxins, combating infections, alleviating stress, aiding weight loss, clearing excess mucus and enhancing overall well-being. I selected the Energy Booster drip to boost energy levels and rehydrate my body, optimising my overall health by balancing fluids and electrolytes. The nurses recommended the one-litre option for a 45-minute session to maximise hydration benefits.

For those who aren’t a fan of needles, this procedure is completely painless. The friendly nurses were careful and ensured we were comfortable throughout the process, even offering refreshments. Then it was time to sit back, relax, and let the drip do its magic!

We all experienced noticeable benefits in the days following the session. I was more energised throughout the day, beating that afternoon slump, while Amy and Tash saw noticeable differences in their skin hydration and moods. Arguably, Cristina got the best result out of the experience as she was completely released from whatever flu she was catching! All of our drips achieved exactly what they promised.

Thank you to IV Drip Zone for a unique experience. If you're contemplating trying an IV drip, consider this your sign to give it a go!

THE ART OF MAKING DECISIONS

Something we are exposed to on a daily basis in the real estate profession is the complicated and emotive process of decision-making. Families moving between areas have a lot to consider and many questions to answer. Like our clients, I too was faced with a huge decision post-lockdown in 2020 and ultimately moved the family to Nottingham Road in the KZN Midlands. In hindsight, it was the easiest ‘difficult’ decision we’ve made.

Since then, we’ve been faced with a number of other big decisions and opportunities. Firstly, I left the relative security of a national real estate brand to create an independent one with a view to grow. This decision has paid off with the establishment of the Local Real Estate brand on the North Coast, KZN Midlands and St Francis in the Eastern Cape. In 2022, we also made a huge decision to start our own independent school in Nottingham Road, Carlyle College. The school is in its second year and things are going very well.

To many people, making even one of these decisions would be big, let alone all of them in under two years. So what got into us? Were we throwing caution to the wind, relying on a higher power, or do we have it all figured out?

The answer is more straightforward. It’s called being decisive, and it’s something I have consciously worked on over the years. The word ‘decisive’ comes from a Latin derivative meaning ‘determined’, which I think is very meaningful, especially when describing making big decisions. Decisiveness is a learned skill, crafted over time using life experiences to guide you. It is about being

far more self-aware and in touch with how you feel about things, not necessarily what you think. Trusting your gut as some might say. However, you need to understand how and why we either make decisions or we don’t.

Our brains, particularly an area called our limbic system, are responsible for processing emotions and behaviour, providing us with a built-in protection system. Knowing the answers to our questions triggers a sense of reward, whereas uncertainty creates pain and puts our body on alert. This is why negative emotional experiences are two times as intense as positive gains. The threat response is therefore hardwired, so by acknowledging these built-in barriers, it becomes easier to make a choice and keep moving.

It doesn’t mean to say you shouldn’t feel anxious about a decision; it’s just that you need to accept that this feeling is perfectly normal. If you’re willing to feel anxious and make a decision anyway, you’re training your brain to see the anxiety that goes along with making decisions as no big deal. This will make you feel increasingly confident when making future decisions and avoid you getting stuck in a cycle of indecision and stagnation.

Being decisive doesn’t, however, mean that you have it all figured out. It’s about pursuing growth, not perfection. It’s about embracing uncertainty and trusting that your competence and life experiences will help you bounce back from failures or setbacks. It’s about identifying what you really want and setting things in motion in pursuit of these goals, but being open and bold enough to take other opportunities if and when they present themselves.

Decisiveness is a learned skill, crafted over time using life experiences to guide you
