TO OUR SROS

HIGHLIGHTING OUR FABULOUS SRO’S Officer Scott Teien

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a resource for Carroll Elementary faculty and staff in crime prevention and the development of security measures to make campuses safer. Meet

our profiled Officer, Scott Teien, from Carroll Elementary.

CAN YOU SHARE THE PATH THAT BROUGHT YOU TO BEING AN SRO?

I was getting ready to retire from the Irving Police Department after almost 32 years, and my old Criminal Investigations Division Burglary Detective partner, now the Chief of Police for the Red Oak ISD

WORDS JENNIFER CASEY

Police Department, asked me to come work for him at an elementary school. I worked at Schupmann Elementary School for three years and then saw an opportunity to come to Carroll Elementary. This is my second year at Southlake Carroll and Carroll Elementary School.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STORY YOU

CAN SHARE? I love it when I get letters from the students saying that they feel safe!

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON OR FUNNY QUESTION ASKED BY A STUDENT?

The most common question I get from teachers and students is: “Can you arrest me?” I give them a little smile and tell them, “Nope! You can’t get out of school that easily.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING

AN SRO? The kiddos! I love interacting with the students, letting them get to know me and me getting to know them. I am like a “papa bear”, kind and protective when it comes to my students, parents, and teachers.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO

MENTION/ADD? I used to coach traveling ice hockey goalies from the lowest level to the highest level. I was also the assistant coach to an AAA hockey team.

Our SROs in Southlake are true heroes, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the important work they do for our local schools. They put smiles on our children’s faces, make sure they feel safe, and are fi erce protectors.

Here are just a few words of appreciation from the community on the Southlake DPS Facebook page.

“We are so very grateful for each one of our SROs and offi cers in Southlake. Thank you for everything you do. You are so appreciated.” - Kristine Kemp

“We have the best police department and SROs in the world. So thankful for all of you!” - Mal Danielle

“Thank you to our SLPD SROs. Our kids hero-worship you for the purest reasons - kindness, cool uniform, always helping everywhere (the crosswalk, the flagpole, helping friends in the hall get to class), without ever a thought of a day like today in Uvalde. Thank you for all you do, and most importantly, all you are WILLING to do for our kids.” - Janet Bassingthwaite

“Thank you SROs for reporting to the schools each morning believing the day will hold smiles and silliness, but always being prepared for the what if. It makes it a small bit easier to send our babies to school knowing you are there.”- Amanda Nied

“We appreciate all of our brave SROs! Thank you for your commitment to the safety of our Dragons and their teachers.” - Lesley Walker

“We are so thankful for our amazing SROs and I hope I speak for many in our community when I say we love everything about you all. The fact that our kids see you having fun and being engaged, the fact that you make yourselves available and present so the kids know you’re there and they’re safe, and most importantly that you all are willing to sacrifi ce so much for our kids. Thank you seems so inadequate.” - Steph Richardson

“I am so thankful for our SROs! It gives me so much peace knowing each campus has someone watching over our most precious and our admin, teachers and staff. Thank you!” - Trina Gwynn

“There aren’t words to express the gratitude we feel for our SROs. They get to know our babies and are truly present. I can’t even wrap my head around such a tragedy. Praying for the families facing the unthinkable and the fi rst responders.” - Christine Ramano

“We are so fortunate to live in a town where our children have so much protection! In other areas where this is not an option, I truly wish they would offer regular patrol positions to Veterans that need work and they would also be willing to do anything to protect our children. May God wrap his arms around these families.” - Heather Taylor
