Whether you’re unemployed or working but entertaining thoughts of moving on, finding a new job is an involved process that takes lots of commitment and hard work. Sifting through job openings can be akin to finding a needle in a haystack.

Searching through that proverbial haystack, however, is even more difficult when you’re forced to compete against hundreds of others doing exactly the same.

But finding a job, and doing so quickly, doesn’t need to be so difficult. The following tips should help cut down on the trials and tribulations of looking for work. · Network. Recognizing you’re not the only one looking for a job is essential to finding one you really want. Recruiters’ inboxes are overflowing with the resumes of potential applicants, so you need an edge. Where most job seekers find the most success is through word-of-mouth. Family, friends, former co-workers or anyone

else you have regular contact with outside of your current office can all be great sources of information when looking for a job. · Get organized. Keep track of your job-searching efforts. Finding a job can be a drawn out process, as recruiters typically must sift through large applicant pools before setting up any interviews. Keep a separate file on all jobs you’ve applied to, complete with a job description and copy of the cover letter and resume you sent to that particular job. Keep these files easily accessible and organized, as you never know when you might be contacted by a prospective employer. · Know what you have to offer. Examine your strengths and work on communicating those strengths. Effectively explaining what you do best is your best chance of landing that dream job, so practice illustrating how your skills apply to each position you’re seeking and how those skills can benefit the company.

While the official word that the country is in a recession has not been formally announced (even though signs certainly point to it), it is the wise person who takes precautions to ride out a period of time where the economy and the job market may be tumultuous.

Even though no career path is absolutely immune to economic fluctuations, there are those that can weather the ups and downs much better than others. Rather than find yourself on the unemployment line the next time government officials take to the airwaves with poor economic news, it could pay to get into a career that’s a bit more secure for the long haul.

Certain factors indicate that a career can ride out a recession. These include jobs that are in high demand, ones that require special skills, positions that continue to provide goods and services despite what is going on in the economy, and jobs offered by stable companies.

El Cinco de Mayo, conmemoración de la victoria del ejército mexicano contra el francés, no es sólo una excusa para beberse una margarita. También nos brinda la oportunidad de darles a los niños una dosis beneficiosa de cultura mexicana. Sin embargo, esta lección de Historia no tiene que ser excesivamente formal. Independientemente de que seas el padre, un amigo, pariente o maestro, siempre habrá formas divertidas de darles a los niños alguna información referente al Cinco de Mayo, al estilo mexicano.

• Enséñales a los niños a contar hasta 10 en español (uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve y diez).

• Organiza un juego a las escondidas, pero exígeles a los chicos que deben contar

hasta 10 en español. Y también pueden decir “¡Ya voy!” en vez de “Here I come”.

Whether you are a parent, friend, relative or teacher, here are some fun ways to teach children a little bit about the fifth of May,

• Play hide and seek, but kids must count to 10 in Spanish. And they can say, “¡Ya voy!” instead of, “Here I come.”

Contrariamente a la creencia popular, el Cinco de Mayo no es el Día de la Independencia de México. En realidad, es una festividad regional mexicana, celebraciones con fundamentalmente limitadas al estado de Puebla.

La conexión con Puebla está vinculada al significado verdadero festividad, la de la conmemora que sorprendente victoria del ejército mexicano contra las fuerzas francesas el 5 de mayo de 1862.

El estado mexicano contrajo una enorme deuda con Francia después de 1860, luego de lograr su independencia de España en 1821, se vio obligado a combatir contra un ejército francés empeñado en la expansión imperial, que utilizaba la deuda contraída por México como justificación para sus esfuerzos expansionistas.

Al reconocer las intenciones de los franceses, España e Inglaterra le retiraron su apoyo. Aunque el presidente Abraham

Independence Day (CL)

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day. In fact, Cinco de Mayo is actually a regional holiday in Mexico, with the celebrations primarily limited to the state of Puebla.

The connection to Puebla involves the true meaning of the holiday, which commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces on May 5, 1862. Heavily indebted to France by the 1860s after gaining its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico found itself fighting a French army that was intent on empire expansion, using Mexico’s debt to the French government as justification for invasion.

Upon realizing the intentions of the French, both Spain and England withdrew their support.

Although President Abraham Lincoln expressed America’s sympathy for the Mexican cause, he was unable to offer more than that, as his country was any busy fighting its own civil war at the time.

As a result, Mexico was forced to defend itself against a well outfitted French army. A poorly armed and heavily outnumbered militia, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, managed to defeat the French at Puebla, stopping the French invasion of Mexico in so doing.

A regional holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo actually bears more significance in the United States, where it is celebrated by Americans of Mexican ancestry, and is similar to the American celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day and the Chinese New Year.

During the second phase,

Business received Minority Enterprise Development awards Four businesses were presented with MED week awards on Friday, September 18 during the 27th Annual Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce Minority Economic Development (MED) Week awards ceremony. The awards luncheon, which was held at the Philander Smith College, featured keynote speaker Rodney Earl Slater who served as the 13th U.S. Secretary of Transportation.

Mayor Mark Stodola presented the following MED week awards: Little Rock Regional Minority Entrepreneurs of the Year: The Design Group – Myron Jackson, Telly Noel and Mark Parker.

¡Bilingüe significa el doble de diversión!

Una niña habla inglés mientras juega con sus amigos, pero se da vuelta y hace una pregunta en español a su madre. Una abuela canta en español una canción de contar números a su nieto; su madre le pide en inglés que se ponga su abrigo. El pequeño responde a ambos idiomas.

Es posible que usted haya visto escenas similares en la plaza de recreo, en la escuela de su hijo, en la tienda de comestibles, o incluso en su propia casa. Al día de hoy, uno de cada cinco niños en EE.UU. tiene ascendencia hispana; por lo que ser bilingüe es algo muy común.

Muchas madres latinas que recién llegan a EE.UU. desean mantener los lazos con sus países de origen o con su cultura, preservando su idioma y transmitiendo las tradiciones a sus hijos. Al mismo tiempo, las familias latinas saben que sus hijos deben poder hablar inglés para tener éxito en EE.UU. Los niños se sienten confortables con cualquier idioma. Aprendemos los idiomas más fácilmente durante la niñez, explica la Dra. Kathleen Alfano, Directora de Investigación Infantil en Fisher-Price. En efecto, cuanto mayor es el niño, más difícil resulta grabar en la memoria los sonidos, los ritmos y las estructuras gramaticales de otro idioma. Esto se debe a que el cerebro del niño no solamente es más sensible a los matices del sonido y el significado, sino que también tiene más posibilidad de retenerlos creando literalmente las vías necesarias para procesar la información, una capacidad que se diluye a medida que pasan los años.

Aún en los hogares donde sólo se habla un idioma, la exposición de un niño al sonido de otro idioma, a través de libros, cintas de vídeo, música y juguetes bilingües, puede ayudar a tender las vías necesarias para que el niño aprenda en el futuro ese idioma, u otros, a través de una educación más formal.

Este otoño, cuatro nuevos juguetes bilingües de Dora la Exploradora(TM) y Handy Manny(TM), fabricados por Fisher-Price y Mattel, abrirán las puertas a mundos de diversión y actividades para todos los niños.

Este mundo bilingüe online permite a las niñas influir y provocar cambios en las vidas de Dora y sus amigas.

El nuevo Taller de Reparaciones de Manny, de tamaño adecuado para los niños, presenta una enorme cantidad de proyectos que los niños pueden realizar, tal cual lo hace Manny, un bilingüe “arreglatodo” con sus herramientas parlantes en su programa de TV. “Los juguetes bilingües configuran el escenario para el futuro desarrollo del lenguaje mientras los niños se divierten”, afirma la Dra. A child speaks English while playing with her friends, but turns around and asks her mother a question in Spanish. A grandmother sings a Spanish-language counting song to her grandson; his mother tells him in English to put on his coat. The little boy responds to both languages.

You may have seen similar scenarios on the playground, in your child’s school, at the grocery store -- or even in your own household. Today, one in every five children in the U.S. is of Hispanic heritage; being bilingual is fairly common.

Many Hispanic moms new to the U.S. want to maintain ties to their countries of origin or to their culture by preserving their language and passing traditions on to their children. At the same time, Latino families know their children must be able to speak English to be successful in the U.S. The kids are comfortable either way! Why does it seem so natural for a child to be able to switch back and forth from English to Spanish, when adults often struggle to learn a new language?

We learn language most easily during early childhood, explains Dr. Kathleen Alfano, Director of Child Research at Fisher-Price. In fact, the older the child, the more difficult it is to imprint the sounds, rhythms, and grammatical structures of another language on the brain. That’s because the child’s brain is not only more sensitive to nuances of sound and meaning, but also more likely to retain them by literally creating the pathways necessary to process the information, an ability that fades with each passing year.

Most bilingual children are not confused by two sets of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation because they have the extra brain pathways to accommodate the learning process, Dr. Alfano says.

Even in homes where only one language is spoken, exposing a child to the sound of another language through books, tapes, music and bilingual toys can help lay down the pathways necessary for the child to learn that language, or others, through more formal education later.

This fall, four new bilingual Dora the Explorer(TM) and Handy Manny(TM) toys from Fisher-Price and Mattel open doors to worlds of fun and activities for all kids.

The bilingual online world empowers girls as they influence and change the lives of Dora and her friends.

The new kid-sized Manny’s Repair Shop features lots of projects that children can build, just like Manny, a bilingual Mr. Fix It, does with his talking tools on his TV show with English and Spanish phrases.

“Bilingual toys set the stage for future language development while children are having fun,” says Dr. Alfano. “Children’s play patterns are universal. They get so absorbed in what they are doing -- like drawing, playing music, stacking, or exploring a playset theme -- they don’t even realize they are speaking and playing in two languages!”
