Q&A:

Carl J. Goldberg assumes role as board chair with a mission in mind Some of Carl Goldberg’s fondest memories are of his grandmother.

Speaking to him only in Yiddish, she instilled in him the Jewish concept of “Tikkun Olam” — repairing the world. As a father, husband, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Carl has made improving the lives of others a priority.

After nearly twelve years as a Foundation for Morristown Medical Center trustee, Carl became chair of the board in January 2025. Now, Carl has turned his passion for making the world a better place to the Foundation board – leading with purpose to advance exceptional health care at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.

Q: How did you become involved with Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center?

Q: What is your vision for the Board of Trustees’ work over the next few years?

A: In 2009, my wife, Mary Ellen, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and we decided that she should have her treatment here at Morristown Medical Center. Although the outcome was tragic — my wife passed away in 2012 — the level of care that she received at the hospital was extraordinarily compassionate.

A: I’m tremendously excited to see proton therapy come to the hospital because it continues to elevate Morristown Medical Center as a world-class health care facility, not only serving the surrounding community, but really the entire region.

As someone whose life has been touched forever by cancer, I know how important this is to our community.

My family decided to support the integrative oncology program at Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, which focuses on holistic approaches to cancer treatment.

Mary Ellen found this program comforting and got so much solace from it. We were very honored, as a family, to be able to contribute.

In 2023, I was approached about becoming the chair of the board and enthusiastically agreed.

It was uplifting and motivating to see the 2024 philanthropic goal for this technology exceeded — more than $12.5 million was raised to bring the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™ to the medical center. We look forward to continuing to raise funds to advance the project alongside the Foundation.

CHAPLAIN RESIDENTS served patients through the Spiritual Care Department at the medical center in 2024

In 2024, five chaplain residents, thirteen chaplain interns and more than thirty Spiritual Care volunteers like Paul served patients at the medical center. Religious outreach — which includes praying together, Ash Wednesday services, Passover Seder kits and Ramadan Iftars, to name just a few services — is available 24/7/365.

As patient volumes rise, so do the emotional and spiritual needs of those who give and receive care.

Thanks to Paul and Katy, the Spiritual Care team has hired the new Cain Family Oncology Chaplain for Atlantic Health Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center to serve inpatients, outpatients and team members there and across the hospital.

The position, which is endowed in perpetuity, ensures that the team can

continue helping people face unexpected challenges that surface when medical events occur. Navigating life’s unexpected and surprising pathways is something that both Katy and Paul experienced on their journeys as Morristown Medical Center supporters.

A lifelong Catholic parishioner, Paul never imagined he would become a Spiritual Care volunteer — or a deacon.

He connected with the Foundation through his parish community, and while studying for the diaconate, was asked to find a ministry beyond the walls of the church. His experience with the Foundation led him to the Spiritual Care Department.

Every Thursday morning, Paul receives a list of 20 to 30 patients to visit at the medical center.

As he walks the hospital’s hallways, he feels he’s just scratched the surface of what spiritual care offers. “It’s been the highlight of my week,” Paul says, noting that patients he sees are often vulnerable and are grateful for a visit with someone who can bring the comfort of their faith traditions directly to their bedsides.

Katy also learned about the Foundation through her community and was moved by the care that her friends received at the hospital. Living on the east coast and working on the west coast, she is no stranger to maneuvering the demands of a busy schedule, but supporting spiritual care keeps her connected to her values, faith and community at home.

Inspired by Paul’s stories and her own experience at another hospital when her mother faced a health crisis, Katy says she “gained a new level of respect for and understanding of what happens in hospitals.”

When she and Paul learned about the opportunity to endow a chaplain position, they were eager to help.

“We both thought this would be a great opportunity to support the hospital in a way that was meaningful to us,” Paul explains, adding that it was “good timing.”

The couple was looking to get more involved, and spiritual care continues to be in demand.

That memorable Thursday morning volunteer shift — when a young woman teared up at the end of the Lord’s Prayer, an older patient requested anointing and Paul found a priest coming down the hall at that very moment, and a woman found strength to receive the Eucharist — was a reminder that the timing was, indeed, good.

Morristown Medical Center’s patients are fortunate to have Katy and Paul’s empathetic devotion to seeing that the spiritual care they receive is just as transformative as the medical care for which the hospital is celebrated.

For Brian and his wife, Mary Murphy, that moment arrived in December 2024, when they made a substantial donation of more than $1 million to Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.

The Murphys’ relationship with Morristown Medical Center has long been rooted in personal connection. Over the years, they’ve supported the hospital in various ways, but the past year marked a turning point from general support to purposeful impact.

After learning about opportunities to elevate care in neurology and neurosurgery and witnessing friends struggle with neurological conditions, they felt compelled to act.

Their decision to fund cutting-edge equipment wasn’t just philanthropic — it was personal, and a reflection of their desire to invest in the health and future of their community.

By enabling these technologies, the Murphys have helped empower clinicians to deliver the highest-quality care to countless patients.

Their impact became tangible during a visit to the hospital, where clinicians personally demonstrated the equipment and shared stories of how it’s transforming patient care. “It’s not often that you get to directly see the benefits of what you contribute,” Mary reflected.

Watching their gift in action underscored the power of purposeful giving and strengthened their commitment to the hospital’s mission.

Mary further deepened her involvement through volunteerism this spring. In the lead-up to Mansion in May at Wildfair, she joined the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center, taking on the role of Landscape Co-Chair for the month-long fundraiser benefiting

the Proton Therapy Center. Though it was her first time working with the group, she brought her marketing and communications expertise to the table and both she and Brian were inspired by the Women’s Association’s energy and the scale of the event. This became another facet of their personal connection to the hospital that led to the significant contributions of time and talent.

The idea that the hospital is a place of profound experiences continues to drive their sense of connection and desire to be involved.

The D’Amatos lived the challenges of chronic illness, now they’re building a legacy of patient-centered palliative care When Rob D’Amato’s brother, Anthony, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease as a freshman in college, his family embarked on a years-long journey navigating medical care and the challenges of treatment. These experiences stayed with Rob and inspired his family’s volunteerism and philanthropy at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.

Rob and his wife, Gina, have a longstanding relationship with the medical center that began on the simplest terms — geography. After graduating from college, Rob commuted to Morristown from Staten Island, NY, for work, but soon moved to Basking Ridge, NJ, sharing a condo with Anthony. In the years that followed, Rob stayed in Basking Ridge and occasionally turned to Morristown Medical Center for care when his kids were injured or when his parents needed treatment.

Through these interactions, he came to know the hospital as a “great place to receive care” and was grateful that it was close to home.

As Anthony continued to receive treatment primarily at Overlook Medical Center with a few visits to Morristown Medical Center, the D’Amato family wanted to get more involved. They were introduced to Foundation Officer, Gerri Kling, who told them about Kids4Kids, the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center’s youth philanthropy committee to benefit Goryeb Children’s Hospital.

Kids4Kids contributes to fundraising through hands-on projects and group activities for kids ages 10 through 18, and was a fun way for the three D’Amato kids to join in. Through volunteering and philanthropy, the D’Amato family saw first-hand how the hospital’s surrounding communities rely on and support the hospital’s remarkable care and innovation.

When his father, Tony, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer originating in the lymphatic system, Rob accompanied him to chemotherapy treatments and was struck by the “unbelievable level of care and understanding” the oncology team offered.

The fact that the hospital is nationallyranked in multiple service lines impressed Rob and the proximity of treatments provided accessibility during a stressful time. The impact of the D’Amato family’s experiences with the medical center stayed with them over the years and informed their compassionate response to a tragic turn of events when Rob’s brother passed away in January 2024.

Nancy and Skippy Weinstein Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center to celebrate 10 years offering comprehensive care for patients with longlasting illnesses

After Anthony’s passing, the D’Amato family turned to philanthropy to honor him.

They wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and families facing serious illnesses and Rob’s perspective as a certified financial planner guided their decision to give a planned gift that was part-donation and part-beneficial interest from an individual retirement account (IRA). Rob knew he could maximize the impact of his family’s donation by contributing a blended gift to expand the pediatric focus in Morristown Medical Center’s palliative care program in a way that keeps patients and their families at the heart of individualized care plans.

With the help of the D’Amato family, the palliative care program has grown to include a new board-certified physician specializing in pediatric and adult palliative medicine, a social worker who provides support for patients and family members in addition to helping navigate resources, and an administrative team member who helps the program meet the needs of increasing patient volumes.

Given their experience with Anthony’s illness, the D’Amatos wanted to support this holistic approach that offers help to

both patients and their families. “It fit so perfectly with what I hoped to be able to support,” Rob said, noting that giving from the emotional place of having just lost his brother shaped the drive behind and the direction of the gift.

December 2025 marks 10 years since veteran hospice nurse, Nancy Weinstein, and her husband, Stephen “Skippy” Weinstein, generously donated funds to create a hospice and palliative care center at Morristown Medical Center.

Building on Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center’s continued commitment to this vulnerable patient population, last year, donors like Guy and Denise Apicella, the Caruso Family Foundation, Inc., Robert and Gina D’Amato, Donald and Frances MacMaster and others contributed more than $1.17 million to expand palliative care specific to pediatric patients’ needs.

As Morristown Medical Center’s focus on hospice and palliative care continues to grow, the Foundation for Morristown remains committed to supporting this critical resource.

EVERYDAY TRANSFORMATIONS IN HEART CARE GOAL: $9 MILLION

Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute to add new facilities, accommodating more diagnostic and therapeutic procedures For more than 30 years, Neil and Lois Gagnon have played an important role in shaping cardiovascular care at Morristown Medical Center. Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, which was dedicated in 2008, has grown significantly since then thanks to the tireless efforts of the talented team members in cardiology and passionate philanthropists like the Gagnons.

“We have been fortunate to be involved with Morristown Medical Center for many decades,” Neil and Lois expressed.

“Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute’s reputation has grown to the point that patients outside our community are seeking its services” — an honor and a challenge for which the medical center and the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center are mobilizing.

Morristown Medical Center is now top 50 in the nation for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery according to U.S. News & World Report. Healthgrades deemed the hospital to be in the top five percent of the nation for overall cardiac services and for coronary interventional procedures.

These accolades reflect the expertise and devotion of highly-skilled clinicians in addition to the medical center’s ability to meet the demands of a continually growing community whose health journeys require innovative treatments.

Keeping pace with community needs Philanthropy will be key to helping Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute continue meeting these needs. The project will include an expansion that consists of the addition of two new cardiac catheterization labs, two new electrophysiology (EP) labs and an additional dedicated recovery unit for ambulatory patients before and after procedures.

The institute is home to one of the nation’s largest cardiac catheterization programs, having performed more than 10,500 procedures in 2024 and 2,500 EP procedures. Cardiac catheterization provides important details about the heart structures that assist with diagnosis, while EP labs are equipped to evaluate and treat heart rhythm disorders.

The Gagnon Family Foundation is pleased to be a lead donor in supporting the expanded services planned through the Gagnon Cardiovascular Center’s new campaign. As patients from across the country turn to Morristown Medical Center for cardiovascular care and the demand for cardiovascular procedures and anticipated growth in structural heart and EP procedures rises, the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center and the hospital’s communities will work together once again to meet vital needs.

Women’s Heart Program Spotlight: Maura Sommer Donor contributions support specialized programs like the Women’s Heart Program, which played an important role in Maura Sommer’s diagnosis and recovery from a rare heart condition.

Maura, a lawyer and mother of three, had two heart attacks by age 48 before she was referred to Amy Ahnert, MD, who meticulously investigated her health history and ran the correct tests to uncover the rare, but manageable, heart condition Maura had been living with undiagnosed. Today, Maura is confident in her health thanks to the diligent care she received.

Deskovick Maternity Center expansion and modernization The Deskovick Maternity Center at Morristown Medical Center, delivering 5,727 babies last year, must expand to handle growing patient volumes while improving operational efficiency and enhancing the patient experience to guarantee that all new parents receive the support and care they need during one of the most precious and memorable times of their lives.

best maternity hospitals in 2025 and Money Magazine ranked the hospital in the top 10 in the U.S. and number one in New Jersey for maternity care.

The surrounding community’s trust has also bestowed increasing numbers of obstetric patients upon Morristown Medical Center.

The Foundation for Morristown Medical Center will work with donors to build on past support from the late Robert “Dick” Deskovick and his wife, Louise “Jackie” Deskovick who contributed $5 million in 2014 to complete the previous renovation.

The level of individualized care that mother-baby team members provide at the Deskovick Maternity Center and generous donor support over the years has garnered the center accolades that reflect the breadth and depth of its excellence. The center is ranked high performing in maternity care for 2024-25 according to U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek named it one of America’s

Construction plans include a maternity assessment unit to increase triage space, an induction suite for patients awaiting C-sections, a mother-baby unit with more postpartum

patient rooms, on-call sleeping rooms for clinicians, a men’s locker room next to the women’s locker room to accommodate clinicians and office space for administrative team members.

The project also includes equipment replacement and upgrades for the Labor and Delivery and NICU teams, including incubators, omnibeds for premature or critically-ill infants, warmers for newborns and a portable ultrasound machine that can provide bedside imaging.

The ability to expand will rely upon philanthropy, which will enable the medical center to improve patient flow, accommodate up to 6,300 deliveries and enhance the patient experience.

Building a New Proton Therapy Center Ongoing community support will advance the addition of the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™ at Morristown Medical Center. This state-of-the-art technology allows for precise targeting that significantly enhances patient comfort and treatment outcomes. Proton therapy is particularly beneficial for patients with head and neck cancer, brain tumors, liver and lung cancer and tumors in children, as it reduces collateral damage to surrounding structures.

On October 14, 2025, Morristown Medical Center held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the upcoming installation of the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™ for the new Proton Therapy Center at Carol G. Simon Cancer Center.

Morristown Medical Center will be the first in New Jersey and among only four institutions in the country to offer this advanced proton therapy, with the technology expected to be operational at the facility in 2026. This milestone was made possible by more than $12.5 million in donor support.

Atlantic Health, Morristown Medical Center and Delta Dental of New Jersey, Inc., leadership celebrate the new Delta Dental Center at Morristown Medical Center.

New Delta Dental Center endows equitable dental care for vulnerable patients A generous endowment from Delta Dental of New Jersey, Inc. is expanding dental services at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.

The newly-named Delta Dental Center is a busy hub of care for patients, accommodating nearly 8,000 visits annually. The center is a critical resource for seniors, at-risk children and developmentally disabled patients, providing care ranging from routine dental work to reconstructive surgery and dental health education.

The new center, which opened in March 2025, has been an essential resource for

underserved communities through crucial programs like Senior Smiles, the Developmental Disabilities program, which offers highlyspecialized care, and the Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children program, which serves low-income, at-risk children. The endowment supports direct patient care and provides the program with long-term funding to continue this important work.

Delta Dental Center is a larger space with increased capacity to care for more inpatients, outpatients and Sameth Emergency Department patients. Two new clinical spaces offer more room to accommodate wheelchairs and gurneys, which is critical for patients with a variety of special conditions. Upgrades also include a spacious, comfortable patient reception and waiting area, staff areas

has created an indelible legacy that furthers community reach and invests in surrounding communities that depend on top-notch care. In addition to outpatient care, the center also serves the medical center’s inpatient population, performing pre-operation examinations and extractions to clear patients for surgeries and minimize risk for infection.

Delta Dental Center accommodates nearly 8,000 visits annually and supply rooms with vital equipment and new staff offices, which also provide space for visiting dentists who volunteer their time and expertise.

For more than 20 years, Delta Dental of New Jersey, Inc. has provided grant funds to support Morristown’s dental program and this next step in their relationship with the medical center

The endowment will also ensure that resources educate the next generation of dentists, many of whom return as volunteers. Staff training and educational lectures will help to bring more community dentists and students interested in dental careers to the facility, effectively carrying forward equitable dental care into the future.

F. M. Kirby Foundation: Celebrating 76 Years of Giving For more than 76 years, the F. M. Kirby Foundation has been a devoted partner in advancing exceptional health care at Morristown Medical Center. The foundation, which has given an astounding 64 grants to the medical center to date, was established by Fred Morgan Kirby in 1931 to support an array of education, health, environmental, arts, religious, public affairs and human service organizations.

In 1949, the foundation contributed its first grant to Morristown Medical Center’s Building Fund for $25,000 and has remained committed to philanthropy that promotes healthier communities. Its well-established legacy of championing high-quality patient care and innovation in health care is evident in its most recent grant supporting the purchase of a Zeiss Kinevo® 900 Robotic Visualization System.

$2 million raised for Proton Therapy Center

Design with purpose Mansion in May funds enable Women’s Association to fulfill $2 million pledge for Proton Therapy Center

Despite experiencing no fewer than 18 rainy days in May 2025, the Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens at Wildfair was a remarkable success.

The event raised funds for the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center’s ambitious $2 million pledge in support of the new Proton Therapy Center at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center.

Drawing 24,000 visitors, the event showcased the talents of interior designers and landscape artists who transformed the 220-year-old estate into a breathtaking experience.

Originally a working farm and gristmill, the Chester Township property evolved

into a Colonial-style estate in 1934, with significant enhancements in the 1990s that shaped its current charm.

Since 1974, the Women’s Association has hosted 21 Mansion in May events, raising more than $16 million for vital hospital initiatives. This year’s proceeds will help bring the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™ to Morristown Medical Center, offering cutting-edge, precise cancer treatment. With more than 400 members and the support of 1,000 Mansion in May volunteers, the Women’s Association continues its mission to help the medical center meet the evolving health needs of the community.
