Project Independence

Project Independence is designed to help patients in financial need due to catastrophic crises. Established and sustained by the William E. Simon Foundation, charitable giving allowed this relief fund, unique to Morristown Medical Center, to help 60 patients last year with mortgage bills, medical expenses, transportation costs and managing food insecurity. A total of 2,644 patients have received assistance since the start of Project Independence. The continued success of the program was made possible in part by $1 million in funding from a new boarddesignated endowment in 2023 and from gifts from the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center, the Crimi Family Foundation, Inc., and others.

Atlantic Health System’s Cardiovascular Rescue and Recovery Program expands Morristown Medical Center’s ability to provide 24/7/365 multidisciplinary care to our most critically ill heart patients with access to world-renowned specialists and life-saving treatments through Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute.

Established in September 2021 with help from the Foundation’s community of donors, it is the first-and-only program of its kind in the state. Thanks to support from donors like the late Gar-Wood N. Burwell, Frank and Mary Walsh and James and Grace Woo in 2024, the program has continued to grow, with the Cardiogenic Shock Program serving a record number of patients and facilitating positive outcomes.

Led by Lillian Aldaia, MD, the Cardiology Fellowship Program at Morristown Medical Center’s Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute provides intensive training in the full scope of cardiovascular medicine and spans a range of inherited and acquired cardiovascular diseases.

Fellows are trained over three years in advanced imaging, electrophysiology, heart failure treatment and interventional cardiology.

Fellows have presented research at the Heart Rhythm Society meeting, the American College of Cardiology national meeting, American College of Chest Physicians, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, and others. The Pester Family Fellow Endowment Fund ensures the continued success of the program.

Women’s Heart Program

The Women’s Heart Program is committed to preventing cardiovascular disease in women through all stages of life thanks to support from donors like Paul E. Cain and Catherine M. George, Barbara and Bob Luciano and others. This comprehensive program educates, screens and treats women experiencing cardiovascular symptoms or with known heart conditions. The Women’s Heart Program team will present at the leading annual conference in the field of Cardio-Obstetrics in 2025 — the Ninth International Congress on Cardiac Problems in Pregnancy.

Patient Spotlight

Donor contributions support vital programs like the Women’s Heart Program, which played an important role in Maura Sommer’s diagnosis and recovery from a rare heart condition.

Maura, a lawyer and mother of three, had two heart attacks by age 48 before she was referred to Amy Ahnert, MD, who meticulously investigated her health history and ran the correct tests to uncover the rare, but manageable, heart condition Maura had been living with undiagnosed. Today, Maura is confident in her health thanks to the diligent care she received.

Donations will also help provide an Advanced Practice Nurse to manage research projects and a geneticist who can help patients with HCM and other heart abnormalities navigate treatment options. Matthew Martinez, MD, continues to represent the program on a national stage through his expertise and treatment of conditions of high-profile athletes and innovative research.

Additionally, this fellow often serves as the point person for acute myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock cases, and is often one of the first physicians to see and evaluate critically ill patients who require life-saving interventional therapies.

Advanced Fellowship in Echocardiography

The Advanced Fellowship in Echocardiography, made possible through philanthropy from Robert and Carol Henry and other generous contributors, trains cardiologists in advanced cardiovascular imaging techniques.

SPOTLIGHT: D’AMATO FAMILY

Long-time Morristown Medical Center volunteers and donors Robert and Gina D’Amato are supporting a hospital initiative that helps young patients with serious illnesses and their families.

Robert experienced first-hand the effects that chronic illnesses have on young people and their families when his brother was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition in college. This inspired the D’Amato family to help expand a vital pediatric palliative care program at Morristown Medical Center that keeps patients and their families at the heart of individualized care plans. The program will grow to include a new board-certified physician specializing in pediatric and adult palliative medicine, a social worker who can provide support for patients and family members in addition to helping to navigate resources, and an administrative team member who will meet the needs that increased patient volumes generate.

Pediatric cancer can be very complex to treat. Donors have responded to the need to create a pediatric hematology and oncology pharmacy service dedicated exclusively to young cancer patients. Funding supports a board-certified pediatric oncology pharmacist specially trained to identify the proper therapy and optimal dosage for each patient, reduce side effects and minimize the late effects of treatment. This pharmacist will hold bedside consultations and maintain open communication with children and their families during every step of treatment.

Child Development and Autism Center

Last year, donor funding helped support several vital programs at the Child Development and Autism Center:

Child Development/Autism Center Social Skills Group

Children and teens with autism and related developmental disabilities often struggle with making friends, maintaining friendships, understanding social rules and cues, taking others' perspectives, and conversing with others. Social skills groups are designed to assist these patients in learning the rules of social situations and practice them in a supportive environment.

Child Life Activity/Equipment Fund

Child Life Specialists focus on keeping young patients calm and distracted during their stay. Donor support helps to purchase stress balls, playing cards, crayons, educational toys, Xboxes, games and Netflix streaming accounts for each patient room, providing many hours of fun and distraction critical to their quality of life during treatment and recovery.

Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

Seeded by more than $2.24 million in donor contributions, the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program at Morristown Medical Center trains the next generation of pediatric sub-specialists to care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients.

This rigorous ACGME-accredited fellowship program includes three fellow positions – one for each training year. Over three years, fellows gain expertise and skills in clinical care, medical education and research.

Josephine Miller, MD, was selected as the first fellow in the program and has been named the Larry Skolnick Fellow in honor of Lawrence M. Skolnick, MD, the first director of Neonatology for Morristown Medical Center. The program continues to receive annual support from a generous endowment in his name.

Calling All Kids

Philanthropy has played a significant role in the incredible growth and popularity of the Calling All Kids Storytime® Network at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, a premier healing service of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC). By enabling new content and programs and helping pediatric patients find laughter and distraction with each other through creating television shows and other mixed media arts projects, children needing services at Goryeb Children’s Hospital can find a way back to being kids again. The program receives ongoing support from WAMMC’s Calling All Grandparents Endowment which is supported by Kathleen E. Christie, among other donors.

In September 2024, the Maoli Charitable Foundation hosted a Celebrity Classic Car Show to benefit Calling All Kids Storytime® Network, raising $250,000. This generous donation is helping Calling All Kids continue to bring smiles to children and families who rely on Goryeb Children’s Hospital for their care.

— U.S. News & World Report

America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Joint Replacement Award™

Among Top 100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Orthopedic Programs

— Becker’s Hospital Review

Morristown Medical Center is among the best hospitals in the nation for orthopedics, with notable awards and recognition for knee and joint replacement that reflect its commitment to excellence and innovation.

Thanks to the donor community, our team can remain focused on our patients and their families during challenging times of treatment and surgery. We take pride in communicating with patients every step of the way to provide the best outcomes and to ensure that patients feel empathy and excellence in the care they receive.”

EQUIPMENT HIGHLIGHT

Low-dose Imaging System

In 2024, a generous pledge from the Douglas M. Noble Family Foundation was completed to help purchase a low-dose imaging system that allows pediatric patients to undergo diagnostic imaging in less than 20 seconds, while remaining standing. This innovative technology will provide highly detailed images of the spine, hips and legs and deliver two to three times less radiation than a computed X-ray and 20 times less than a standard CT. Reducing radiation exposure is critical, especially for children with orthopedic cancer or spinal deformities like scoliosis who receive numerous X-rays to monitor disease progression.

The addition of this leading-edge technology will make Goryeb Children’s Hospital and Morristown Medical Center one of few locations in the Tri-state area to make the EOS Imaging System available to patients.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

Christie Family Orthopedic Residency Program

Formally established in 2023 through a transformational donation from Kathy Christie, this program produces physicians that are clinically expert in the field of orthopedic surgery and possess habits of lifelong learning to build upon their knowledge, skills and professionalism.

The second class of Christie Family Orthopedic Residents started in July 2024 and are benefitting from a comprehensive teaching schedule with weekly didactic learning, conferences and visiting professor rotations.

Behavioral Health

With a team of highly-trained psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and licensed clinicians, Atlantic Behavioral Health at Morristown Medical Center provides a collaborative and comprehensive treatment approach that addresses health holistically.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our high-performing behavioral health team is able to expand vital resources for patients facing mental health challenges. The comprehensive, evidence-based, and team-based care we provide ensures that all patients receive personalized attention to meet their specific needs.”

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

Behavioral Health Assessment Center

Thanks to generous donor support from the Gagnon Family Foundation and others, the newly relocated and expanded Behavioral Health Assessment Center at Morristown Medical Center will open at 65 Madison Avenue in 2025.

This larger facility continues to provide patients with essential access to same-day or next-day mental health services, with enhanced privacy and convenience.

Art Therapy in the Psychiatric Emergency Department

Morristown Medical Center's art therapist works with patients in the Sameth Emergency Department's Behavioral Health Unit to help manage agitation, alleviate anxiety and prevent escalating behaviors through artmaking.

This approach complements traditional medical treatments, making patients in acute distress more open to care. The program relies entirely on philanthropy for support.

Collaborative Care

In the Collaborative Care model, adult and pediatric patients are screened for depression and anxiety by a behavioral health clinician during their appointment with an Atlantic Medical Group primary care physician. If a patient tests positive for these conditions, they have access to various services provided by a behavioral health specialist on-site during their visit. This innovative care model is currently available in six Atlantic Medical Group practices and will expand to additional locations.

True North Veteran’s Support Fund

Atlantic Health System’s True North initiative offers mental health outreach services for at-risk veterans in northern New Jersey.

Established in 2017, the program is made possible by the support of donors, including the Nicholas J. and Anna K. Bouras Foundation. This unique care program integrates behavioral health interventions with other therapies to assess, treat, and support the psychosocial needs of veterans in our communities.

Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP)

HELP is a program designed to address delirium that often occurs in hospitalized older patients. Delirium is characterized by significant confusion, inattention and a decline in functioning. Fortunately, this condition can be prevented or mitigated through protocols like HELP, which offers bedside interventions to keep older patients mentally and functionally engaged.

HELP was implemented at Morristown Medical Center thanks to a generous seed grant from the Marion E. C. Walls Trust, which continues to support the program, along with other kind donors and an endowment fund. The program is available throughout the hospital and provided over 1,400 patient interventions in 2024.

1,400+ patient interventions through HELP in 2024

Inpatient Alcohol and Substance Abuse Fund

In 2017, Morristown Medical Center launched this vital inpatient program with seed funding from the Walls Trust, which continues to support it.

Under this protocol, an advanced practice nurse and consulting psychiatrist screen medical and surgical inpatients for substance misuse, assess the severity, initiate treatment and coordinate care before discharge.

A significant enhancement has been the Benzo-Sparing Protocol for alcohol withdrawal, which reduces reliance on benzodiazepines — traditionally used for this purpose — by using gabapentin instead. Gabapentin manages withdrawal more effectively and reduces cravings.
