Gone but not forgotten The centenary of the First World War is being marked by commemorative projects and events across the country. In Eynsham, the Royal British Legion is keen to capture memories of those who fell in more recent conflicts too. John Blakeman and Michael Cross have researched and written extensively about our War Memorial for the Eynsham Record. Michael remarks: “Having seen faded photographs of unknown men in uniform in my grandparents’ house, it is the men more than the events that interest me. Having grown older myself I can now see that those photographs were in fact of boys in uniform, but who were required to perform a man’s duties.”
Josie Smith (née Druce) who joined her ancestors in St Leonard’s churchyard last month. The District Council has expanded its arts and heritage scheme this year “to offer financial support to local communities who want to do something to mark this significant milestone in world history”. The committee is working (and walking) hard to complete the biennial spreadsheet of the parish rights of way, on which we record any problems we find on the paths. This will be sent to Oxfordshire County Council’s Countryside Service for action. We aim to finish by summer 2014 – the weather was not cooperative before! We have recently discovered that OCC regularly produces a list of unresolved path problems, so we are incorporating that into the spreadsheet to enable a more coordinated approach. There will soon be an update on the progress of our Path Modification Order application to restore the “lost” part of FP 206/10. Thanks to everyone who has helped by completing user evidence forms so far. Remember, you can report any footpath problems to me or to other committee members and we will do our very best to get them resolved as soon as possible. Keep walking – and enjoy the spring!
Oxfordshire County Council is asking for your views on its draft plans for dealing with minerals and waste up to 2030. Key changes from the earlier drafts are:

• Sharp sand and gravel will be dug closest to where it will be used and will therefore reflect the volumes needed north of the river Thames (Cherwell, West Oxfordshire and north Oxford) and south (Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire). That is estimated in the document as broadly equal. • The annual production target for Oxfordshire will be the ten year rolling average; currently that will be 811,600 tonnes and will vary every year. As the landbank (the extant gravel in the permissions granted) is required to be seven years, the effect of this reduction is significant over 15 years: currently the landbank is some 7.2 million tonnes (8.8 years).

In summary, though local deposits are acknowledged, West Oxfordshire is to relinquish its historic role as Oxfordshire’s major gravel producer while South Oxfordshire undertakes significant new operations to bring the average to 50:50.

Hire charges
However, I have always appreciated the benefits of living in a community that is connected at many levels. That people care so passionately about the place they live and are prepared to give time to run clubs, organise events, join committees and get involved gives me great hope for the future. The job of a Parish Clerk is delightfully varied but primarily it is about implementing the decisions the Council makes on behalf of the residents. I have found the parish councillors here to be dedicated, professional and enthusiastic about the village. I will be in and around the place much of the time and hope to get to know many of the local people.
Charges for the Bartholomew Room and Sports Pavilion will see a modest rise in April, though concessions for local and regular users remain significant – full details at Eynsham Online. The Council is also arranging for a bookings diary on the website, to show which dates are free.

Year 2013 review The Annual Meeting for the parish of Eynsham takes place on Tuesday 15 April at 19:30 in the Village Hall. The reports will be in the Library and at Eynsham Online the previous Friday. Taking my dog for a walk through the Fishponds recently, I was reminded what a picturesque village Eynsham is. I met my husband here over 20 years ago, sharing the same cottage on Acre End Street. We lived here a couple of years and found the village very friendly and welcoming. I now live in Woodstock with the same husband and our three children – two at secondary school and one at primary. I got involved in local government as a town centre manager and have been working for the last two years at Woodstock Town Council so I am now fully immersed in the public sector, though I haven’t forgotten that five years ago I had no idea of the difference between a parish, district or county council. It mattered that my bins were emptied, my children educated, my play parks safe to use and the roads passable but I didn’t much care who did it.

Having their say Ten students from Bartholomew School stole the show when Thames Valley Police joined forces with the district Community Safety Partnership for another youth ‘Have Your Say’. Each school was asked to produce practical ideas to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area. The winning team came up with an elaborate idea for a mobile phone app, to encourage responsible drinking as as young people ‘come of age’ to drink. The school won £150 in book tokens and the Community Safety Partnership will now investigate how to make their winning idea a reality.
Local heroes Ollie Hinchliffe, Tyler Walker and Nicky Wishart were the only members of the public to receive awards – with PCSO Helen Keen – at a police commendation ceremony in January. Supt Colin Paine, Commander for Cherwell & West Oxfordshire, said: “I wanted to... thank you personally for your efforts in attempting to rescue Arnold (‘Miles’) Gwilliam when he had fallen into the Chil brook on Oxford Road playing fields... You managed to lift him out and called 999 when he became unconscious. I believe you then took turns to perform CPR whilst waiting for the ambulance.” PCSO Keen who also arrived on the scene to assist has said... “you should be incredibly proud of yourself and this is a sentiment I echo. Also I believe Mrs Gwilliam has praised your actions and was extremely grateful that you were there in her husband’s hour of need.”

Road safety There’s a new 20mph speed limit on Witney Road, to help increase the safety of schoolchildren attending Bartholomew School. The limit is in force between 08:00–09:00 and 14:30–15:30 from Monday-Friday in term time only. Eynsham neighbourhood police team will be out with their Speed Indicator Device to remind drivers.

Eynsham skate park
School sports
The Parish Council had hoped to install a shelter near the skate park, as a natural place for teenagers to gather. Unfortunately the Oxford college which owns the field wants nothing that will encourage teenagers to use the area in the evenings, so has refused permission for the shelter. Perhaps this thoughtful response from Harry Hunt (age 14) will encourage dialogue eventually – and improvements in the meantime.
Recent highlights from Bartholomew School Head of PE Milly Clements – we hope to see regular updates. In the meantime, detailed reports appear in end-of-term newsletters on the school website. The new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) has been a great asset – enabling us to use the outside space much more effectively in the wetter/winter months. It helps us keep up with other schools with Astroturf in terms of developing our skills at hockey; and is also a great facility for football, netball, and tennis. So the MUGA is being used in lesson time, at lunchtime and after school. It is also available to the community from 17:00–21:00 weekdays and at weekends, as well as in school holidays – bookings via the Sports Centre. Last autumn we were lucky enough to have a Sportivate netball course for girls in years 9–11, led by Eynsham netball club’s coach, Emma Talmage. The six-week after-school course was well attended and it was amazing to see so much progress in the time. Eynsham Netball Club juniors now train on Wednesdays from 16:15–17:45 in the Sports Hall. Numbers have increased and the girls are enjoying some friendly matches before gearing up to enter a junior club in the league, which would be a fantastic opportunity to move into high quality club netball. A huge thanks to Emma for her time, and to all other members of the club who have helped run the junior sessions.
Eynsham skatepark is a great facility and there are always plenty of people using it from families with children and their scooters to trikes, BMX bikes and the skaters. It can be frustrating at times with all of us trying to get on the ramps at the same time, but we all enjoy being out, trying our new tricks and helping others with their tricks.
My skateboard friends and I would really like to improve our current facilities, it would be great to see more ramps, a bowl to practice in or half pipe would just be brilliant and more areas for skating. Some of the trees overhang the ramps which cause damp and means we cannot use those sections. And it is annoying that we do not have a shelter. When it rains we are forced to squeeze under one of the ramps as we are too far away from any house to run to. There are other skate parks around in Cuttleslow and Cowley Road but they involve someone driving us there and back so we would really like to expand the area we have in the village – it’s the last thing on our minds to be a nuisance. We are currently thinking of ways to raise some money, we might hold a BBQ and get together in the summer, a sponsored skate, or organise a petition. Please support this community project and help us improve our skate park.
Huge congratulations to Lucy Millington, Ethan Chapman and Callum Chapman, who have been selected for the England Hockey squad for their age groups. The whole school are tremendously proud of their success and we wish them all the best for their training and future matches. It is very rare for a state school to be represented in the England hockey squads, so to have three is amazing! Their passion, skill and commitment is quite inspiring. 11

Churchyard update How about making an effort to help commemorate the First World War Centenary? No special skills required and you’ll be guaranteed fresh air and exercise, plus a chance to meet new people.
Bartholomew School PTA is thinking of setting up a 200 Club, to help fund ‘extras’ that the school can’t provide. At present they only have two events – the quiz night and the fête – hence the shortfall in funds. A 200 Club is a form of lottery with a pre-set amount of numbered lottery tickets. This number can vary to suit the school size but they hope to reach 200 for Bartholomew School and so launch a 200 Club. Each month parents, teachers or friends of the school pay a fixed subscription for their number / s. Each numbered ticket is entered into a monthly draw and prizes are awarded. They anticipate a minimum fee of £1 each month, i.e. £12 annually. 50% of the funds will be given as lottery prizes and the remaining 50% will go to PTA funds. St Leonard’s monthly working parties are really making a difference in churchyard but we still rely on a handful of retired church members helping out. So much more could be achieved if some members of the wider village were to help. You will always be welcome on the last Saturday of each month from 9.30–12.30 but if another time is more convenient contact the Churchwarden Mike Sinfield on 01865 881171 or at 20 Falstaff Close and he can advise how any offers of help can best be used. On the downside, the church has received a number of complaints about dog fouling in the churchyard – sometimes on or next to a grave. Would all dog owners please ensure that their dogs are kept on a lead and that any dog mess is cleared up? Otherwise, unfortunately, St Leonard’s will have to consider banning dogs. 12
Good neighbours Eynsham Good Neighbour Network is now up and running. Since the autumn we have provided support to the many local people who have contacted us through our hotline: 07443 564 516.
Eynsham will have some of its beautiful gardens open to the public on the weekend of 28/29 June this year. We already have about 14 gardens lined up but if you know of one that you think should be opened, please let us know and we will try and persuade the owner to join in. All of us who are opening are aware that our gardens are less than perfect, so that should not put off anyone from joining in. We meet again on Tuesday 1 April in the Tolkien Room. Pat Atkins recalls her husband Brian Atkins 1937–2013; image © Oxford Mail 1985 After a Yorkshire upbringing and schooling, followed by national service, Brian came to Corpus Christi, Oxford to read Chemistry in 1957. After a year he switched to Geology, which determined his career. He married Pat in 1963, was awarded a PhD in 1965 and moved to Eynsham with a growing family in 1969 on appointment to a lectureship. His 28 years curating the mineral collection of the University Museum of Natural History restored a fine but neglected collection to one of the best in the country. Brian was closely involved in Eynsham affairs, with support for the emerging Eynsham Society (1972); for building the Sports Pavilion (1977); and fund-raising for restoration of St Leonard’s (1977-87) with his long-term friend Charles Caine. He also served as president and secretary to the Probus Club. However he will be chiefly remembered for his work with Eynsham History Group. He launched the
Abbey stones The recent collapse of the wall in Lombard Street and Church Street uncovered some stones from the Abbey. These large, strange shapes, unsuitable for rebuilding, have found a new home at St Peter’s Church, where they lie to the left of the Abbey panel, edging the flower bed. You can still pick up leaflets to the Archaeological Trail, in the grounds of St Peter’s and St Leonard’s, and to the longer Heritage Trail – including the Fishponds – just inside the side door of St Peter’s.

group journal, Eynsham Record, in 1983 and edited it for 30 years (well served by an eye for cliché and misplaced apostrophe). The long hours writing articles, revising submissions and setting everything out for the printer – including regular “Then and Now” photos, of which the modern were mostly his own – provided a legacy to the village and personal satisfaction. Brian played a major part in rescuing stones from Eynsham Abbey and later (2002) in creating the Heritage Trail around the abbey precinct, with cairns incorporating abbey stones and panels illustrating abbey life. Though frustrated by mobility problems recently, he still revelled in intellectual challenge – no crossword was too hard. Brian and Pat celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last July with all 3 children and 4 grandsons. His family and friends will miss him greatly.

Below, a summary for those who missed his illustrated talk to the History Group last autumn Each year on Maundy Thursday – the day before Good Friday – the Queen makes a personal gift to elderly people, in recognition of their work for the community and the church. She has visited a different diocese on 45 occasions. In 2013 the Royal Maundy Service came to Christ Church, Oxford, for the first time since 1643. Rev Michael Farthing, vicar of Wheatley, Forest Hill & Stanton St John 1982–1995 and now retired to Eynsham, was “surprised and honoured” to be invited to join a select total of 87 men and 87 women. Other West Oxfordshire representatives included Glyn WallaceLyon, who has worked at the cathedral for 25 years. The Maundy ceremony, rich in tradition and symbolism, is based on the “new commandment” – Latin mandatum – of Jesus as he washed his disciples’ feet. In England the practice of washing feet and giving alms on Holy Thursday goes back to the 13th century. The number of men and women invited, and of silver Maundy coins they each receive, has grown to match the sovereign’s age. The Queen’s own Yeoman Guard, who carry the famous red and white purses, was created in 1485 by Henry VII; and her Chapel Royal Choir which sings at the service was present on the battlefield of Agincourt. Times change, of course. Women were selected as well as men in the 18th century; and the washing of feet was replaced by a monetary gift, though the Lord High Almoner and his assistants are still girded with linen towels and carry nosegays of herbs to sweeten the air. The music has been updated too – all the way to Handel and Bach. And in the august surroundings of Christchurch dining hall the Maundy Menu offered a vegetarian alternative to salmon in the form of leek & Stilton filo tart. 15

Army Cadets
Harry Hunt reports from Eynsham Detachment I have been an army cadet for just over a year now and really recommend it. We spend lots of time outside on exercise, where we set up tactical camp sites, sleep out under shelters and cook our own food, learn camouflage techniques and ambushing other sections, as well as map reading skills and life saving first aid. We also take part in supervised target shooting with rifles, clay target shooting with shotguns, archery and paint balling.
African Children’s Fund established a monthly quiz at the The Talbot in April 2013 following an introduction from one of their fundraising partners.
Some of the best times are when we have camps which can either be for a weekend or we have a two week annual camp in the summer when we are kept busy from the moment we have to get up to when we go to bed. It has helped my fitness and gives us all a good structure and if you get promoted, can help your leadership abilities. Girls and boys can join from age 13 to 18, we meet on Monday at 19:30 in the Village Hall so come along and see what we get up to.
The Oxford Nursery was moved by the story of Quentin Junior Academy, a nursery school for up to 70 children in one of the slums of Kimara in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Many who attend the school are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS yet Quentin is determined to help them get the best possible start in life. In barely a year, the quizzes have raised over £1,000 – a staggering amount that goes such a long way to improving the nursery education of the children.

Community choir
Another update from Larry Poole – details of Eynsham Folk Weekend 27-29 June to follow. This latest addition to Eynsham music scene is ably led by Anne L Ryan, an established voice coach and performance artist. It is a ‘no auditions’ group but already Anne has licked everyone into shape to produce a very creditable sound. Currently 23 strong, the choir hopes for increasing numbers as it becomes better known. They sing all sorts – from African song to traditional carols, via Moon River, the Beatles and many more, but the emphasis is always on having fun.
