A salute to the visionaries – image © Sue Chapman, story on page 4–5 Not so long ago, mass transit was transformed by a network of railways – only to suffer a thousand cuts in the Beeching era. More recently, the buses that brought our communities together were decimated by cuts to local government funding. The necklace of new highways at the heart of the latest schemes is to be weighted down (or financed – take your pick) by thousands of new homes. Must we have roads to secure the housing? Are they in the right place anyway? And is talk of bus and bike lanes merely window dressing? It would be good to think the planners are looking far enough ahead! 1
