Run entirely by volunteers, the scheme provides support for anyone in need within the village.

That support could include collecting a prescription; minor household repairs; garden tidying; sewing on buttons; assisting with form-filling; local shopping; exchanging library books, reading aloud, or simply befriending a neighbour feeling isolated and in need of a little companionship.

The Eynsham Good Neighbour Network will be officially launched with a flourish at Eynsham Village Show on Saturday 21 September. Come and join us for a fun-packed afternoon of family entertainment.

At 2 pm, local folk group Strange Folk (www. annelryan.co.uk) will perform a live set outside the Village Hall, followed by dancing by Armaleggan, the wild Oxfordshire Border Morris side with added “grrr”. For children (and some bigger people too!),

Nearly one billion people go to bed hungry every night and three million children die from malnutrition every year. We’ve made progress in other areas, but hunger is still the great scandal of our age. All around the world, even in the UK, people are struggling to feed their families.

We have a special collection for the poor and starving in the world which we send via CAFOD (The Catholic Fund for Overseas Development).

Everyone is welcome to come and join us as we concentrate our prayer and our attention on those in need. We hold these days twice a year.

Do come and listen to our guest speaker from World Vision, one of the many organizations and charities supporting this campaign.

Verity Hughes – Chair, Fishponds Committee As you read this, the moat should have been dug out again. Six year ago the banks were taken back to the original profile of the Chilbrook before its diversion by the monks in early 11th century. Since then, the vegetation has slowly been encroaching and the open water diminishing. The silt that is left on the banks will soon reduce and by next spring will be green again.

Parish Council property on Oxford Road north and south playing fields – funded from council tax – was hit by a spate of vandalism over the summer. Police are running more patrol checks in the area but if you know anything about the culprits please ring 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The saga of the collapsed wall in Conduit Lane continues, though Linden Homes now seem aware of their responsibility. The Parish Council has pressed for a joint meeting of all interested parties and planned to raise the issue in public at County Hall on 10 September if nothing was arranged by then.

Plans for next winter were formulated at a recent committee meeting. Volunteers will be asked to help create a new route, particularly for wheelchair users, to access Monk’s Green from the car park. This will avoid the dips of the moat by starting along the Heritage path and diverting to the Chilbrook path, then back to the Green. Dates fixed are 19 January, 22 February and 9 March 2014 and others may be added. If you’d like to help please email verity.hughes@eynsham-pc. gov.uk Whilst discussing wheelchair access, a user commented about dog mess on the paths. Please, please pick up after your dogs; just think of people propelling themselves by hand in a wheelchair! There is a dog waste bin in the car park and another on the playing fields. It would be great to have more but they have to be near a road for WODC access to empty them.

Broadband

Paul Wilding – Parish Broadband Champion On 5 August Oxfordshire County Council awarded a contract to BT to bring superfast broadband to much of rural Oxfordshire. The program will see a total of £25m invested in updating the county’s broadband network. Although BT are still planning which parts will be upgraded, early indications are that the whole of Eynsham will be included, which will mean a much improved service for anyone accessing broadband through their phone line.

Superfast broadband is defined as a speed of more than 24 megabits per second (Mbps). This should be fast enough for video streaming, high quality photo sharing, fast download of large files and video conferencing applications such as Skype. The network upgrade does not guarantee that everyone can achieve this speed, as other factors affect performance, including your distance from the exchange, the speed of your computer and whether you share the connection with other devices (e.g. smart phones or games consoles). BT are expected to finalise the project plan by December 2013. Work is expected to commence in January 2014 and continue for two years.

Footpaths

Sue Osborne – Chair, Footpaths Committee On 22 June a group of artists, photographers, naturelovers and other interested parties met at Hazeldene Close for a “Walk & Talk” on the new art / heritage trail. Initial suggestions included making the B4449 crossing safer and tackling some rather ugly features on the first leg. OCC’s Countryside Service has already agreed to various improvements too. The route offers endless opportunities for artwork and interpretation as it skirts the allotments and follows an ancient salt route, then crosses the old railway embankment and Wharf Stream on the way to Eynsham Weir. Returning via The Talbot, discoveries were made (among us was a designer of mobile apps for walks), histories shared (one of us rode the very last goods train through

On the footpaths front, I’m pleased to note the fence blocking bridleway 206/13 (as shown in the last “News”) has been removed. More recently, overgrown parts of the Eynsham Mill walk (in particular footpath 206/32) and the Bitterell footpath have been reported to the Countryside Service for attention – and are in hand. Please get in touch if you notice other problems on your walks, as feedback really does pay off.

Richard Andrews – Chair, Play Area Committee Major refurbishments at the three play areas are complete and routine maintenance has begun. With a little extra money available from developments on Mill Street, we are looking for new smaller projects.

We propose new junior swings at Witney Road to replace ones that are tatty and no longer comply with modern standards. Other suggestions include proper swings at Oxford Road, an outdoor table-tennis table (popular on the Continent), and outdoor gym equipment but we are interested to hear what other people think.

It turns out that the ‘digger’ in the sand pit at Oxford Road is too heavy for use by children – we will be asking the suppliers what went wrong as these diggers are common and very popular elsewhere.

We were planning a teen shelter at Oxford Road but the new fence was torn down as a short cut to the skate park where it will be sited. We are reluctant to do any work until a vandal-proof fence is installed.

Planning

Dennis Stukenbroeker – Chair, Planning Committee A total of 26 new homes is planned for the centre of Eynsham. The former WS Supplies on Mill Street has been demolished in readiness for half of these: four new 3-bed and five 2-bed houses, plus four one-bed terraced houses in the listed barn on the site.

Next door, development at St Leonard’s House has planning consent. The former vicarage will be converted into seven flats with one or two bedrooms, while six one- or two-bed houses will be built in grounds to the rear. Two new units are to be rented to local key workers at 75% of the open market rent.

WS Supplies’ planning agreement provides for nearly £9,500 to be paid to the Parish Council for sport and recreation and enhancement and maintenance of play areas. The owners of St Leonard’s House have also promised £5,500 to the Parish Council for play areas and equipment or other village amenities.

Eynsham Park Estate proposes to build a solar park at Salutation Farm, west of Barnard Gate; an exhibition was held in Eynsham on 16 August. The site is expected to provide electricity for 4000 homes.

Introducing

I am very excited about taking over as headteacher of Eynsham Community Primary School and joining the Eynsham village community. Already I have been struck by the good community support for the school and am working to forge closer links with partners such as the Orchard Children’s Centre and local preschool.

ECPS is entering a new phase. I was drawn to applying for the headteacher vacancy by the vision of key stakeholders, commitment of staff, attitude of the pupils and the real potential for turning things around.

The school is in Special Measures, and everyone involved will be doing their utmost to make rapid improvements for the children in our care.

I have been working at Dunmore Primary School in Abingdon for six years and as Associate Head of John Blandy school in Southmoor from January to July this year. I am passionate about ensuring that every child receives a first-rate education whatever their circumstances; and keen to build a curriculum to equip our children for the 21st century within a caring ethos. I live in Witney with my wife and two young children and have written two books of poetry for children.

Sport for all

Allen Stevens writes The Cricket Club has been awarded a maximum of £35,000 from WODC and match funding up to £22,000 from the Parish Council. This great news means we can now think seriously about a new club and community building. Some form of building for the 2014 season is a real and viable target.

The priority is a solid foundation and platform, 1.2m above ground to avoid floodwater, before we can start to build. We also need an electricity supply to School Piece.

Much depends on input from club members and supporters.

The committee and members are working hard behind the scenes and remain grateful for your contributions and goodwill.

The new artificial turf pitch in the grounds of Bartholomew School opens for general community use on 23 September. The facility is suitable for a variety of sports, not just for football, and community use will be managed by Sports Centre staff.

Initial booking priority went to clubs based in Eynsham but the facility is now open for bookings both from outside groups and on a pay-and-play basis.

Hours available are Monday-Friday 17:00–21:00, Saturday 09:00-17:00, Sunday and bank holidays 10:00–17:00. The booking line is 01993 202020.

A further slot 16:00–17:00 on school days will be open to community use, with priority going to Eynsham groups. The school will also use this time for sports fixtures, if required. School holidays will be given over 09:00–16:00 to community bookings.

Prices will match other all-weather surfaces in West Oxfordshire.

Eynsham Area Waste Watchers are holding another Swap Shop on Saturday 28 September. These free community recycling events are a great way to get rid of things you no longer need and pick up things you do.

Some of us have taken part in clothes “up-cycling” – repairing and adapting old clothes. It is satisfying and creative, as well as saving resources.

We have also visited the food recycling facility near Cassington. The “waste” goes into huge vats, for fermenting into agricultural fertiliser; and methane collected in the process is converted into electricity.

The Talbot Inn:

We live on a small olive and fig farm in remote Extremadura, western Spain. We used to live in Eynsham and our lives are very different now! We have our own well and are responsible for making sure we do not pollute the land in any way, because we would only poison ourselves – there is no water company here to clean the water for us!

We have an ecological waste disposal system, consisting of a very large (covered) hole in the ground, into which all our waste (both toilet and kitchen sink) flows ... The ‘pozo negro’ (or black hole) is started off by throwing in a couple of dead chickens …

Thus begins a decomposition that keeps going indefinitely, dealing with all our waste in a natural way, provided you don’t add anything to upset the balance of the microbes that ensure the waste water is clean enough to soak down to the water table, where it will ultimately end up back in our well and in the kitchen tap. Being this close to possible pollution makes you very careful about what you put down the loo!

We also have to be very careful about what we clean with. Mass produced eco-friendly products are not so easy to come by in some areas of Spain so we often have to get creative. We cleaned the thousand litre water tank (which was very green and slimy) with a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice and when re-filled our fresh well water was sent for testing at the lab and came back with a huge thumbs up… safe enough for drinking! Who needs detergent?

We are still in the early stages but would like to provide accommodation for adventurous travellers and would definitely give a discount to anyone from Eynsham! Follow our blog at www.technobillies.net – at present we’re busy with a glut of figs but who knows what will come next?

Nick Hines writes from Chania, Crete 10 years ago Sue and I were on a Greek island, dining at a little taverna overlooking the sea. As the sun set over distant mountains, we agreed this was where we’d retire.

It took time to find the right place. We wanted to immerse ourselves in Greek culture, not to live as ex pats – Cyprus was out. We also wanted a working island, with shops and services (including airport) running all year round. Of over 700 Greek holiday islands, only a handful would do: the vast majority close down completely out of season. By 2008 the choice lay between Corfu and Crete and the last trip settled it. I remember sitting on the beach in Nea Hora, Crete on New Year’s Eve and the temperature at 28 degrees...

When Sue retired in 2008 I still had six years to work – then I was made redundant in 2009. After two years’ dithering we finally took the plunge.

Within weeks we’d sold our house and bought a flat in Eynsham. We handed the keys to Abbey Rentals and caught the next plane to Chania in Crete. We’ve now been here two years and don’t regret a minute.

Well, we do miss some things. Sue particularly enjoyed meeting people to chat with whenever she went to the shops. We are making friends here, though Sue finds the language difficult and my Greek is coming on slowly. I loved our garden and would spend hours tuned in to the wildlife. Here we have only a ground floor apartment with a tiny patio - though it does host lemon and mandarin trees. When we lived in Eynsham, I’d be off to a Spurs match regularly in the football season and to Essex County or Oxford University matches in the summer. The Greeks are mad on football so a bar screening a Spurs game is never far away. Cricket is another matter, though I watch a lot on the laptop! And the things we miss are far outweighed by the pleasure of living here: climate, diet, people and stunning scenery.

Flower Festival donations Yet another great year and the fragrance of lilies lingers on. Our community groups put on an amazing display and donations totalling £242.60 will be given to Olly Shaw for work at the Youth Centre at Bartholomew School. One of a kind Eynsham has had its share of charismatic characters who add a special spark to village life – and none more so than the late Keith Green. The fourth generation to run Greens Funeral Services, Keith died on 15 January aged 72, after a long and debilitating illness. He left his wife Tricia, children Annie and Ian, sister Rosemary and grandchildren Alana, Oscar and Senna.

As a Freemason and the first foreman of Eynsham Morris when they regrouped in 1979, he was a popular and active member of the community. Without Keith, the Morris would not be what it is today and we certainly wouldn’t have enjoyed a decorated tree in the Square every Christmas for the past 20 years. He made things happen. He also made us smile. Who but Keith

Christian Aid collection I’m delighted to report we raised nearly as much as in record-breaking 2012 – the total from the village came to £2,763 including £116.80 from the Christian Aid Week service. Thanks so much for all you have done to make it possible! We covered more streets than ever and nearly 40 collectors took part. The money will be much appreciated by Christian Aid, who will use it to help people in poverty and distress all over the world. Catherine Baker

would have turned up dressed as a chimney sweep, to hand a piece of lucky coal to Kitty Chapman on her wedding day? And who else could have created comic floats on topical themes for the carnival parade – 21 years in a row? The last float he built with his friend Stan Launchbury was a rockers’ reunion tour, so they called it their swansong.

His other great loves were cricket and scouting.

Between fund-raising and building the Cricket Pavilion, Bosses Night with the Scouts and “shouts” with the Fire Service, he never seemed to sit down.

His funeral couldn’t possibly have been a quiet, formal affair – and it wasn’t. It was the celebration of a man with a lilt in his voice and a twinkle in his eye, who added sunshine and laughter to the village all his life. At Keith’s request the hearse took a gentle tour of the village, with a last call at the Queen’s for the Morris, his escort to a church packed with 400 people.

He also organised the music to be played as the coffin was carried into church, choosing the catchy tune Auntie Mary had a Canary. Obviously that made everybody smile, particularly those who knew all the words. Those who didn’t smiled anyway, because Keith Green was a special sort of man and no one expected anything ordinary from him.

Something else The indefatigable members of Eynsham Country Market keep the village body and soul together all year round with Thursday morning offerings in St Leonard’s Hall but autumn is special. Cream teas and homemade cakes at the Village Show lead on to an array of seasonal items in the Bartholomew Room on 28 September, to support GreenTEA’s Fruit & Nut Festival – apple, plum and gooseberry tarts, preserves, cakes, patés etc.

If you can’t make Thursday mornings, here is your chance to stock up. If you’ve ever considered becoming a supplier, this may be the time for a chat.

What a brilliant day! Hard to believe after last year’s drenching but on 6 July the sun shone continuously.

The Committee agrees that 2013 exceeded expectations and we’re very grateful to everyone who joined the fun, both on the streets and later on the field. Over 3,500 people turned up and they certainly meant to enjoy themselves!

To all who took part in the Parade, Fancy Dress and Shirt Race – you were magnificent! There were more floats than recently, showing amazing feats of imagination, ingenuity and hard work. The fancy dress ranged from graceful to downright wacky – a kaleidoscope of colour and fun.

We’re determined to make 2014 even better.

Because so many people came this time, we can offset last year’s loss and improve some facilities, for example more shaded areas and extra seating. We can also make donations to our ‘Parent Bodies’ to fund their charitable activities, many of which benefit local families.

Some 45-50 people attended August Oasis, sustained by a hot two-course meal each day and homemade cake for tea. They enjoyed cupcake decoration and remedial self massage, talks on family history and fire safety and Gardeners’ Question Time. They were entertained by quizzes and games of ‘Countdown’ and a visit from Northumbrian pipers.

Window on the past

Arthur Green’s bookbinding workshops resume in the Bartholomew Room on 21 September: a beginner’s guide to the history of the craft, the different tools and the rich range of materials used.

This autumn’s sessions offer the chance to make a notebook with marbled paper covers and handprinted label; a leather journal imprinted with your own design; and a simple version of an historic Coptic binding.
