Eynsham’s annual celebrations begin with Eynsham Morris; get into full swing at Carnival, as you’ll read inside; and settle into autumn with a show.

This year’s Eynsham Village Show takes place on Saturday 21 September. EVS Chair, Fay Taylor, says: “There will be lots of the traditional classes that many of you enter with gusto each year and we’ve added some new ones just to keep you on your toes!

With so much TV interest in ‘traditional’ activities we hope that many of you have been bitten by the bugs of cooking, baking and sewing – as well as the other sections such as photography, flower arranging and vegetable growing.

“We have lots of classes in the children’s section so please encourage village youngsters to take part too. We look forward to seeing you.”

Eynsham’s thriving businesses and shops will be showcased at a special event on Saturday 13 July.

“Discover Eynsham”, our first-ever business and retail fair, has been arranged to highlight the huge range of goods, trades and services available in and around the village.

Traders exhibiting at the Village Hall from 10:00 to 15:00 will be offering free samples and consultations, discounted products and demonstrations; and participating village retailers will run special offers as part of the day. Every visitor will also receive a complimentary shopping bag with free samples and money-off vouchers to spend with local businesses.

At the Village Hall there will be the chance to sample a massage, pick up tips on home design and de-cluttering, get financial advice, and much more.

Activities to keep youngsters entertained will include music, dance and singing; and there will be free tea and coffee.

The event is the brainchild of new networking group Eynsham Women Entrepreneurs (EWEs).

Bees – the untold story

insecticide such as one of the neonicotinoids, they will use a spray. These usually have an additive which is meant to deter bees while the fields are being sprayed.

Farmers are encouraged to spray insecticides only when the bees are not around – very early in the morning or late at night – but a busy farmer may find it hard to keep to these requirements.

We are fortunate here in Eynsham that our bees have access both to an abundance of garden flowers and to field crops – rape and field beans predominate.

We also have a ready market for our honey, at the Thursday Country Market and at some of the local shops. We can all help our pollinating insects by reading carefully the labels of any chemicals we buy to treat our garden plants – many are harmful to bees – and by growing suitable plants as well. There are online lists of flowers and shrubs attractive to honeybees – and inspiration just along the road …

As you read this the tubs in Market Square and Mill Street should be spilling over with colourful (and tasty!) nasturtiums and marigolds. Eleanor Chance and other GreenTEA members have planted a staggering range of herbs to brighten the village, including bee-friendly golden thyme, lavender, lemon balm, rosemary and sage. You’ll find more details on the new notice board, with recipe ideas to follow. Why not take a leaf from the GreenTEA book and plant your own?

Image © Jennifer Harland as seen in the Eynsham Cookbook Oxfordshire Beekeepers’ Association had just 3 students on the beginners’ course when I went along in 1998. This year there are 65 or so – a fitting tribute to the role of the honeybee, both as a honey provider and pollinator. This was common knowledge in World War 2: my mother, like all beekeepers, had an extra ration of sugar to feed bees during the autumn. The honey extracted in summer was given to the Ministry of Food. Yes, given – there was a war on. But in a good year we could keep several jars for ourselves.

Big questions hang over insecticides – above all neonicotinoids. They have been much in the media recently, particularly since the European Commission decided to restrict their use.

The debate swings to and fro. On one hand it seems obvious that if seeds are coated with insecticide, then bees – an insect – will surely be affected. On the other, proof seems hard to come by. There are so many variables – weather, bee diseases, varroa mites that can transmit viruses, location of hives, skill of the beekeeper, differing anecdotal evidence etc.

Non-organic farmers point out that, to maximise crop production, they must control pests and diseases by some means or other. If they don’t use a systemic

Public services

Grants to groups The Parish Council will be considering grants to village groups and voluntary organisations at a Finance meeting on 8 October. Applications must satisfy the following conditions: • The grant is in the interests of, or will directly benefit, all or a portion of the parish and its inhabitants; • The organisation submitting the application is non-party political; • The application demonstrates local community need and support; • The applicant demonstrates a clear financial need for the grant.

Access improvements The Parish Council has arranged for an upgrade to the northern boundary of Oxford Road Playing Field, to improve the access from Hazeldene Close. The new stretch of bow-top fencing, with self-closing gate to match, will be complemented by mixed hedging later in the year.

All residents are reminded that dogs are banned from the north field.

Grants are not awarded to meet general salary costs – nor are they awarded retrospectively. Successful applicants may be required to submit a short report within 3 months of project completion.

Footpaths

I am thrilled to announce that Eynsham Parish Council has been successful in its bid for a TOE2 (Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment) grant to help with improvements to the proposed Heritage Trail, starting at Swinford Green. The money will be used for items such as gates, waymarker posts, seating and interpretation panels. Many thanks to all involved with the application, especially Heather McCulloch of WODC. We hope that work will begin on the trail this autumn.

Less happily, I received a complaint from an Eynsham resident last month about the gate blocking bridleway 206/13. As you can see from the photo, there’s a perfectly good kissing gate at the field boundary; but two barred gates / fences beyond it are tied firmly shut with twine. It’s impossible to get through without climbing over or cutting the twine and of course it would be impassable on a horse. This same problem was reported on our biennial footpaths spreadsheet last year. OCC Countryside Service are looking into it so let’s hope it’s sorted soon.

Planning

Dennis Stukenbroeker – Chair, Planning Committee St Leonard’s House on Mill Street may be turned into 13 new homes. The Grade II listed former vicarage, built around 1704, has been offices for several years.

Vacant since 2010, listed building consent was granted for improvements in 2011 but no commercial tenant has been found. Planning applications (13/0746/P/ FP and 13/0747/P/LB) have been submitted to divide the structure into seven one- and two-bed flats and build six one- and two-bed semi-detached and terraced houses in the rear garden.

The owner of 17 Cassington Road, who had consent to build two four-bed houses at the rear, has been granted further consent to increase these to five-bed dwellings.

The owner of Betty’s Meadow, on Oxford Road near the toll bridge, has applied (13/0527/P/OP) to erect four mobile homes on part of the property.

The proposed site is adjacent to Little Willow, also on Oxford Road, which has been granted permission to be a permanent gypsy or traveller site with three mobile homes. The Parish Council has objected to the application.

Bartholomew School has applied (13/0442/P/FP) to construct a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), with floodlighting, on the school grounds for use by both the school and the wider community. The Parish Council is assisting with £150,000 from the contribution paid by the developer of Swinford Green. The Primary School also has consent for a MUGA and has applied to OCC (R3.0044/14 - see OCC website) to proceed without the previous proposal for floodlights.

The derelict barns on the road to Stanton Harcourt have become a bit of a landmark, although planning consent was granted for conversion into a dwelling in 2010. A revised plan has recently been submitted (13/0466/P/FP). The site is surrounded on three sides by a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

This great event on Wednesday 31 July at Oxford Road Playing Field is is organised by Oxfordshire Play Association and supported by a Parish Council grant.

Activities for all ages and abilities include circus skills; climbing wall; craft & junk modelling; face painting; go karts; sensory bus; taster sports; youth area and more. Don’t miss it!

Thanks to a £17,000 award, the District Council will soon be rolling out new opportunities for young people to get involved in sports. Plans for Eynsham include basketball, football, street hockey, netball, tennis and street dance, under a rural sports initiative.

Sportivate is a £56m lottery programme run by Sport England, aimed at 14 to 25-year-olds who are not currently taking part in sports, or who do very little.

Parish Council Chairman Gordon Beach said: “The parish council is delighted this bid has been successful and looks forward to working with the District Council to provide a lasting legacy for the sports and participants who will benefit from these funds.”

Giving something back

This is a chance to look around your local fire station, meet some of the crew and talk about what it’s like to be a fire-fighter. It will also be an opportunity to see our brand new Incident Support Unit, a vehicle fully kitted out to provide support and carry out specialist tasks at incidents. The crew will be happy to answer any questions and give advice on home fire safety.

Primary focus

The Tuer

Mrs Vass, Headteacher of Eynsham Community Primary School since 2005, is retiring in July 2013.

Children, staff and other members of the school community wish her well for the future and thank her for many years of service to the school.

The school governing body has recently appointed Ian Moore as new Headteacher, after a rigorous selection process assisted by Local Authority officers.

Mr Moore is currently a Deputy Head at a large school in Abingdon and is well qualified to lead our school over the next phase of its improvement. He is looking forward to working at Eynsham Primary School and we look forward to welcoming him here in September.

New road markings have been placed in the Tuer, at the Parish Council’s request, following complaints from members of the public. Any obstruction of the Tuer will be enforced by Thames Valley Police.

It is an offence to wilfully cause obstruction to a public thoroughfare; this means if you park a vehicle in the Tuer, blocking the free flow of traffic, you commit an offence. This would initially result in a £30 ticket, possible removal of the vehicle at a cost of £150 and possible court appearance. Drivers are encouraged to use the free car park in Back Lane.

Stop press Bartholomew School has received planning consent for the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). Site development officer Mark Harrison, announcing the news, said:“Over the coming weeks and months we will be finalising contractors and getting construction under way. We hope that the facility will be up and running by September, with an agreement for community use similar to that operating in our Sports Centre at the moment.”

“I decided to raise money for DEBRA because my family is affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa -- which causes skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction – although in an extremely mild form.

“Many who suffer this genetic condition in its worst form have to endure life in pain. I have been able to live a full and happy life and not missed out on doing anything that my friends can do. Running 26.2 miles and enduring a few hours of pain (plus a few blisters) seemed a good way to help make life easier for someone who is not as lucky.

“My total as of 3 June is £2,385 which is worth over £2,800 with the gift aid pledges. I’m so pleased with this total, the generosity of my friends and customers of the shop has totally overwhelmed me.”

Pat Atkins reports that the collection from Eynsham in early May raised £520.77 and her collecting team have a smart certificate to acknowledge it. Many thanks to everyone who helped raise this great total.

Hannah Jago is collecting bras for Witney Wangers What’s the story? Against Breast Cancer funds ground-breaking research to improve detection and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis.

They are particularly focusing on ways to identify and treat secondary breast cancer earlier, faster and more effectively. Ultimately, their goal is to discover a vaccine against breast cancer.

Where do the bras go? Our recycling partner collects them, packs them up and ships them out to Africa. They are sold on village markets there, to ladies who could never afford our fancy western underwear.

Our recycling partner makes a donation to the charity based on the weight of bras collected. We receive £1,000 / tonne and there are people and organisations all over the country collecting bras for this scheme as well as me.

How do the collection points compare? I have 10-15 sites around the county and they vary as to how many bras they collect but Birdies, the bra shop in Witney, and Eynsham Medical Centre collect the most.

We have collected 8 bags from there since November 2012 – that’s around 600 bras – and are soon to collect another!

Why did you get involved? My partner does a lot of recycling for charities, communities, shops, etc. and he showed me the bra banks. I work with lots of women running house parties for my SagoJago jewellery and accessories business, so it seemed fitting to add that to the list of things I can offer. There was no personal reason for choosing ABC but it’s a local charity so I felt it appropriate. A family friend has recently lost her life to the disease so it’s even more important now to raise as much as we can. We are all affected.

Carnival is coming!

our mystery person who will open proceedings on the field.

On Carnival Field have a wonderful time! See the judging of all the floats and fancy dress categories, then prepare for an afternoon of spectacular events and acts in the arena and around the field. There are games and amusements for all ages, prizes to win from the raffle and bottle stall, special activities for small children and great selections of food and drink. Don’t forget to browse the huge Craft Fair marquee, where you will be amazed at the variety and quality of items on sale.

After Carnival Day the Carnival Queen, deputy and attendants, with members of the Carnival Committee, will be at the morning service in St Leonard’s Church. As the Flower Festival coincides with Carnival weekend, the church will be decked with floral arrangements from many clubs and organisations in the village. Across in the Bartholomew Room you’ll find the Arts Group summer show.

Be sure you’re around on 6 July for this annual day of anti-austerity jollity in the village! The Committee has been working hard to provide all the familiar favourite events, as well as new experiences, so we hope that Carnival 2013 will break all records for attendance and sunshine.

And finally… on a more serious note, anyone who was here last year will recall the difficulties presented by the torrential rain on Carnival day. We went ahead in spite of this – and hundreds of people had a great day out. We have done all we can to maintain this special day in the Eynsham year, but we’re all volunteers and need more help. Please turn out and support us, bring your family and friends; and join us on the Committee if you’d like the tradition continued. We look forward to seeing you!

Group updates Eynsham Country Market is saluting summer with free tastings of picnic fare in St Leonard’s hall on 4 July; and again on 6 July with a cake stall on Carnival field.
