Sweet P,s

PA NTRY AND

Gold Coast a CAndy

Sweet P’s owners Orson Fournillier and Yaw Asare talk about their business.

How long have you been in business?

Gold Coast Candy was founded in 2019 with a focus on bringing highquality, handcrafted confections to market. In May 2023, we expanded by acquiring Sweet P’s Pantry from its founder, Sharon Pavich, blending its award-winning chocolates and toffees with our signature brittles. Today, we continue to build on both brand’s legacies, offering exceptional sweets that celebrate craftsmanship and tradition.

How did you get started?

Gold Coast Candy was born out of a love for traditional flavors and highquality confections. Sharay’s Ghana Style Brittle began in 2019 when Yaw Asare recreated a peanut brittle recipe from his childhood in Ghana. Meanwhile Sweet P’s Pantry has been perfecting handcrafted toffee, chocolates and caramels since 2013. In 2024, we brought both brands under one roof to offer a diverse range of treats, emphasizing premium quality and thoughtful gifting.

Yaw Asare, Kim Palmer, Orson Fournillier, owner.
Winner of 2023 Valetine’s gift giveaway in collaboration with Lake Country Family Fun.

What changes have you seen over the years?

We’ve seen a growing appreciation for high-quality, small-batch confections and a shift toward meaningful gifting. Our business has expanded from a local operation to being available in over 40 retail locations across Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois. In addition to our store, we serve corporate clients and online customers, ensuring that more people can experience our award-winning confections.

What do you most love about your industry?

Candy is more than just a treat—it’s a way to bring joy. Whether it’s a gift for a loved one or a personal indulgence, we love knowing that our products help create special moments. The creativity of our industry also excites us— blending flavors, refining recipes, and finding new ways to delight our customers keeps us inspired.   What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

One common myth is that brittle has to be rock-hard and sticky. Our Ghana Style Brittle is soft and easy to eat, made with a simple, clean recipe that highlights the natural flavors of caramelized nuts. Another misconception is that candy is just an impulse buy—our customers know that a well-chosen confection can be the perfect gift for any occasion.

What message would you most like to share with people?

We are a gifting company that makes candy. Whether you’re treating yourself, celebrating someone you love, or showing appreciation to a colleague, we help you “Gift the Sweet Moments.”

What would you like people to know about your business?

Our confections are handcrafted with care, and we take great pride in offering awardwinning sweets. Our products are available in-store, online, and through corporate gifting programs, making it easy to find the perfect treat for any occasion.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

Our customers often tell us how much they appreciate the service they receive at our store. We take pride in ensuring that every visitor leaves satisfied, whether they’ve found the perfect gift or discovered a new personal favorite. Creating a welcoming, enjoyable shopping experience is just as important to us as making great candy.

What are you most proud of?

We’re incredibly proud of our eight Wisconsin State Fair-winning confections, earned between 2016 and 2024:

n Toffees: Cashew Almond, Ruby Cherry Almond

n Nut Brittles: Peanut, Pistachio

n Candied Pecans: Rosemary Salt & Pepper, Margarita, Spiced Orange

n Caramels: Door County Cherry Caramel   These awards recognize our commitment to

quality and flavor, and we’re honored to share these exceptional treats with our customers.

How many employees/family members work with you?

We have a dedicated team of employees who help make and package our confections, provide excellent customer service, and support our growing retail and corporate business. Our team is comprised of long time employee with over 5 years tenure to recent additions over the last year. As a small, but growing company, we’re all deeply involved in every aspect of what we do.

What are you most grateful for?

We’re grateful for our incredible customers who continue to support and believe in what we do. We also appreciate our hardworking team and the family and friends who have encouraged us along the way.

To whom or what can you credit your success?

Too many people to mention! Our success is a testament to the dedication of our team, the support of our families, and the loyalty of our customers. Without them, none of this would be possible. ~

Featuring Gordon Phetteplace

For forty years Gordon Phetteplace was a professional theatrical scenic/ lighting designer and college professor. Growing up in rural Wisconsin, he loves the outdoors and has taken thousands of photographs. For years Gordon’s asspiration was to incorporate his photography with his passion for woodworking. After retirement, he investigated methods of transferring photos onto wood, leaving only the ink, eliminating the paper. The landscape photos are edited digitally, transferred onto the wood, then trees are carved around and in the photos. The carved trees are finished by hand painting. Phetteplace will be a featured artist at the West Vliet Street ART WALK, April 25th and 26th at Vista 59 Artisan Boutique & Gallery, located at 5901 West Vliet Street, Milwaukee, WI. Moe Chic

Barn Shops and the e

MoeChics owner Debbie Movroydis talks about her business.

How long have you been in business?

Opened Shop April 3, 2024. Is this your first business? what directed you to your present location?

Not my first business. I owned an interior commercial interior design and contracting business in the early to mid 90s.x

How did you get started?

I started doing stained glass in 2017 then got into glass fusing and soon my garage became my studio full of kilns, glass and equipment for glass art fabrication. I sold online and had glass art classes in my garage. I started to sell my items in a local shop for a short period and fell into an opportunity to open my own shop and it just blew up from there. I still create my art to sell, but now I represents many other artists. What changes have you seen over the time open?

Initially my intention was to have an Art Gallery, Women’s Apparel Boutique and Vintage Department. Now, in addition to those, I carry an extensive line of high-quality minerals, fossils and crystals as well as a Christmas department and a Tea Room. I want to always enhance the shop to offer the customers a variety to pique their interest.

What do you most Love about your Industry?

beauty. It brings me so much joy to see customers enjoy the shop.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

People think because I own a business that I have an extensive and expansive income. What message would you most like to share with people?

Customer service and accommodation are most important to us.

What would you like people to know about your business?

We focus on customer service first and foremost.

What type of classes take place at Moe Chic? how is the schedule determined?

Most of the classes available right now are glass fusing classes where a customer can create a piece in glass and pick it up after it has been fused in a kiln off site.

Price is determined on the amount of glass used in the project. We also offer wine glass painting classes.

Do you have any upcoming events at your location?

~ MoeChic first year anniversary is April 3, 2025. Throughout the month of April, we will offer specials throughout the shop.

~ A Makers Mart will be held on the property on May 10 and September 20, and we will participate in the events.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

That the shop has such unique, diversified and affordable items.

What are you most proud of?

The calm and artistic vibe that you get when you walk into the space.

How many employees/Family work with you?

The Corn Laws of the 1800s were tariffs the U.K. levied on all cereal grains, including wheat. Bread became so expensive only dignitaries could afford it. Later, the creation of carved decorative ‘bread platters’ displayed their boasted bread. In 1846 with the repeal of the tariffs bread was again affordable to the many. Demand increasxed for the breadboards and gifted like greeting cards-- adorned commonly with wheat or florals, along with a word or phrase, they came to symbolize both scarcity and abundance. This pivotal chapter of history not only affected the economy but the culture as well. You can purchase these authentic bread boards procured from the U.K. at Amy Renee’s Kreative Touch. 7219 W. Contined from page 28 Wednesdays and Fridays. Joan retired from owning her own art gallery “The Rivers End Gallery” for 19 years. Along with working at MoeChic 2 days a week Joan has been working more on her own art and has established notoriety in the art community along with having many of her pieces in the shop. What are you most grateful for?

The start of the shop was not a plan, it’s as if opportunities were placed in front of me. Such as meeting Joan. I am so grateful for these opportunities that have come my way and I want to do good with them.

Who/what can you credit your growth?

I think the growth is coming from advertising of course but most of all word of mouth from a good experience that a customer has had in the shop. That is my #1 goal: “give the customer a good experience.”  What plans do you have for your business’ future?
