Dear Guests, Friends & Sponsors Welcome to the 23rd Showhouse for a Cure. It is very exciting to have a Showhouse again and to work with many of our old friends and welcome many new friends.

We hope you enjoy this year’s Showhouse. Our generous homeowner, Andy Nunemaker, is known for his community spirit and his giving nature. We are indebted to him for sharing his magnificent home.

This year’s Showhouse is not like most of our homes. Starting as the home of a Milwaukee financier and his family, it later became a women’s dormitory, and most recently, was the UWM Alumni House. Now it is back at the beginning, a private home. Even the pool has had several lives – largest pool in Wisconsin when it was built, pool for the students, and then filled with soil for 67 years, its outline just visible, and now a rebirth as a fountain. What a wonderful addition this home is to the neighborhood and Milwaukee.

Andy’s support of WBCS started in 2012 with his home on Terrace Avenue. He continues to support the WBCS mission of investing in breast cancer and prostate cancer research. A cancer diagnosis does not affect just the individual, but everyone in that person’s life. Each of us has our own reason of why we do what we do. Whether it is personal, such as the suffering of a family member or a dear friend, or a sense of connection with those we share this time and space with, what we do matters. It matters now, and it will matter many years from now. By being here and visiting the Showhouse, you too are supporting the WBCS mission and helping to move research ahead.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating this wonderful home and its magnificent setting, while supporting the WBCS mission of investing in research that is leading to better treatments now and to cures in the future.

The Showhouse could not happen without the help of legions of generous, gracious, determined individuals and organizations.

There are too many to mention individually, but I would like to give you a sense of just what it takes to create a Showhouse.

First, we need the homeowner, followed by the designers who imagine what could be, secure furniture and accessories to make it so, install their vision, only to reverse the process and remove everything two weeks later. They are also responsible for financing their design space.

There are house sitters, contractors–many of whom donate their time and materials, and the Showhouse docents and all of the planning committees who work to make the whole event run smoothly.

Finally, there are supporters and donors–those individuals who give their time and financial support to WBCS to help fund the scientists in their work. Thank you to the corporations, large and small, who support WBCS and the researchers. Thank you to the foundations that recognize the importance of philanthropy in research and so generously support the WBCS mission.

2022 Showhouse For A Cure Did You Know?

WBCS is an all-volunteer philanthropic organization that invests in promising breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Interior designers, accountants, architects, graphic designers, landscape designers, lawyers, planners, your neighbors and hundreds of others volunteer their time to work together to create our annual events: n Showhouse for a Cure n Raise a Glass to Hope Gala n Tee Up for a Cure Golf Outing and Gala n Pinktacular Luncheon, Fashion Show and Bazaar. Fashions are modeled by breast cancer and prostate cancer survivors.

In addition to these WBCS events, WBCS is supported by others in the greater Milwaukee community. In the past year, Lucky Lanes, Slim McGinn’s, Carroll University Blaze Dance Team & Dr. Julie Rapps and Susie and Bob Fono/Barnes & Noble have each generously supported WBCS by sponsoring events that engaged their customers, clients and local community.

Each year, generous homeowners vacate their residence for three months or longer, giving their home over to 25 or more designers.

Donations to WBCS and revenue from purchased tickets and events are NOT used to decorate the Showhouse. All work done for the annual Showhouse for a Cure is underwritten by the interior designers. They are supported by their firms, suppliers, contractors, friends and families.

WBCS is the largest annual philanthropic donor for adult cancer research to the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

Since its 1998 inception, with the help and generosity of the greater Milwaukee community, WBCS has invested $6.8 million for cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).

Researchers we support have secured an additional $75.9 million in extramural grants to continue the promising research initially funded by WBCS. All research proposals are ranked competitively by peer scientists and the WBCS Scientific Review Committee. This committee recommends only the most promising proposals that fall within the WBCS mission. The WBCS Board of Directors then makes the final decisions, awarding grants to those proposals with the most promising ideas.

2022 Research for a Cure Scientific Review Commitee WBCS, Inc. is making a significant contribution to advancing breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center (MCWCC). The cumulative research investment by WBCS since the 501(c)(3) charitable organization’s founding in 1998 is $7.09 million. By 2022, WBCS research awardees had secured an additional $90.6 million in external funding based on WBCS support, bringing the all-volunteer charity’s measurable research impact to $97.69 million.

Like so many worthy philanthropic initiatives that depend on events for fundraising, WBCS was faced with a two-year hiatus forced by the global pandemic of Covid-19 and its variants. Despite the challenges, WBCS leaders took the opportunity to rebrand the organization’s logo to better reflect who we are: an organization focused on advancing research, treatments and, ultimately, cures for two very common and still deadly diseases. Statistics tell the story: one in nine men will face a diagnosis of prostate cancer in their lifetime. One in eight people will face a diagnosis of breast cancer during their lifetime. Men get breast cancer, too.

To close the inevitable revenue gap of having to cancel in-person events due to the pandemic, we reached out on social media to keep in touch with our WBCS friends, held virtual fundraisers and created a new event that could be safely held, a traveling holiday wine pull, to be offered for a third year in 2022. We anticipate a successful year as we kickstart 2022 with healthy measures in place. Traditional in-person events begin again with our beautiful 2022 Showhouse for a Cure and surrounding events.

WBCS, INC. Endowed Chair Updates Significantly, in 2020 WBCS met its goal to fulfill a $1 million commitment to MCW to endow a Prostate Cancer Research Professorship made to the College in 2017. We were motivated to accept the opportunity and challenge of this initiative because of the success and impact of endowing the WBCS Breast Cancer Research Professorship. In 2015, Hallgeir Rui, MD, PhD, was successfully recruited as the Founding WBCS Breast Cancer Research Professor.

His leadership influence and mentorship are key to fostering basic breast cancer research that can help lead to better treatments and outcomes at MCWCC.

Scientific Review Commitee The WBCS Scientific Review Committee (SRC) is charged with stewardship of the funds entrusted to WBCS by donors. The SRC is composed of knowledgeable survivors, WBCS representatives, community oncology specialists and MCW scientists and MCWCC leadership. The SRC meets at least annually to review funding opportunities that fall within our mission. Research we support goes through a rigorous peer-review process before being presented to the SRC for consideration and recommendation for final approval for funding by the WBCS board of directors. Peer-reviewed progress reports are assessed before second year funding is approved. To avoid conflicts of interest, any MCW representative on the committee who is in consideration for a WBCS grant or has a potential conflict is recused from meetings where discussions and decisions associated with them take place.

The past two SRC meetings occurred virtually, with significant work being done. In 2020, WBCS $100,000 Independent Seed Grants were approved for funding over two years for Carol Williams, PhD, and Yunguang Sun, MD, PhD. A No Cost Extension (NCE) was approved for awardee Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD, based on recommendation of MCWCC Director Gustavo Leone, PhD. In 2021, the SRC approved release of second year funding for Drs. Williams and Sun, based on significant research progress.

Partnerships Make The Difference Importantly, partnerships are critical to the success of WBCS. Our partnership with MCWCC enables us to fund significant research opportunities. Scientists we support locally are collaborative in ways that give WBCS-supported research the potential for a global impact. Our army of volunteers makes it possible to host inspirational events that generate investment dollars, while offering guests cancer prevention education and awareness. Donors range from foundations, businesses, philanthropists, community partners, the media, to generous individuals who simply open their hearts to support our mission. Collectively, our partnerships make possible investing the innovative capital critical to unlocking science mysteries leading to better treatments and survival. Together, we foster hope by investing in options for those patients now and in the future who are challenged by breast cancer and prostate cancer. ~

Cancer Center Director Hails Importance of Philanthropy for Reasearch Gustavo Leone, PhD, Director of the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center (MCWCC), the Dr. Glenn R. and Nancy A. Linnerson Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, Senior Associate Dean of Cancer Research, and Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, is a tireless advocate for philanthropic research support. Speaking at a recent WBCS event, Dr. Leone emphasized the critical role of philanthropy to fuel innovative research ideas into cancer research advancements.

Dr. Leone works closely with the Froedtert Clinical Cancer Center to ensure that scientific breakthroughs made possible by the support of WBCS and other philanthropic entities are translating into treatment options and that patients benefit from the most current therapies available.

MCW scientists have successfully leveraged the significant WBCS investment of $7.09 million in earlystage, promising research into an additional $90.6 million of external research support, for an overall breast cancer and prostate cancer research impact by WBCS of $97.69 million.

To cite just one current example, WBCS philanthropy furthered research in the lab of Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD (see synopsis below) that has led to Dr. Nevalainen’s

receiving a highly competitive and prestigious NCI R01 grant. The Nevalainen NCI-R01 project is important because of its translational significance and potential for high impact on disease.

As an MCW community engagement leader, Dr. Leone never fails to emphasize the critical importance of philanthropy as an igniter for new avenues of research.

Funding innovative ideas that translate into larger external grants both advances discoveries in immunotherapies and precision oncology and leads to an understanding and reducing of cancer treatment disparities.

WBCS and its Scientific Review Committee approve support for only the most promising, peer-reviewed research proposals that fall within its mission. While this important stewardship has led to a 12:1 return on our philanthropic investment to defeat breast cancer and prostate cancer locally, the partnership of our all-volunteer charity with collaborative MCW researchers has the potential for a global reach that might otherwise not be possible.

Dr. Leone recently celebrated his second anniversary as Director of MCWCC. Thinking about the tasks ahead, Dr. Leone noted with his unfailing optimism, “Our mission is set and goals are lofty, and the road to achieve them is the best part.”

As a strong MCWCC philanthropic partner, WBCS looks forward to continuing to work with Dr. Leone, as we raise funds critical to investing in science with the potential to lead to cures. ~

Independent Seed Grants 2020 & 2021 Carol Williams, PhD, Joan K. Van Deuren Professor in Breast Cancer Research, Director, Cancer Biology Program, MCW Cancer Center, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology A Novel Strategy to Suppress the Activity of Oncogenic Small GTPases in Breast Cancer Breast cancer remains a leading killer of women, despite much progress made in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease during the past decade. Our research has been investigating the mechanisms that promote breast cancer, with the goal of identifying new ways to treat breast cancer. Our studies focus on the protein called SmgGDS that helps breast cancer cells multiply and form tumors. We discovered that breast cancer cells make two forms of SmgGDS, named SmgGDS-607 and SmgGDS-558. We are investigating how these two forms of SmgGDS function in breast cancer, in order to determine how to stop SmgGDS from promoting tumor formation.

Yunguang Sun, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine New Therapeutic Approaches to Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer.

80% of newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC) cases are Estrogen receptor-α positive (ER+). More than 20% of patients with ER+ BC are projected to die from recurrent disease despite anti-estrogen therapy. Lack of effective preclinical models of the aggressive and spontaneously metastasizing ER+ Luminal B BC subtype has hampered efforts to find better treatments to 1) overcome established endocrine resistance in metastatic BC, or 2) block development of endocrine resistance in latent metastases frequently occurring in patients with Luminal B ER+ BC. We will test selected drugs in mice with already established endocrine resistant BC lung metastases and determine using therapy naïve tumor models whether combinations of these drugs with anti-estrogens can eliminate micro metastatic BC lung metastases and cure the mice.

Third Year No Cost Extension Approval Leading To A New NCI RO1 Award Marja Nevalainen MD, PhD, Professor, Eminent Scholar, Dept. of Pathology and Pharmacology & Toxicology “Stat5 and Anti-Androgen-Induced Metastatic Phenotype of Prostate Cancer” Treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer (MPC) are limited to androgen-deprivation-therapy. The new-generation antiandrogen, Enzalutamide dominates the clinical space and is FDA approved in pre- and post-chemotherapy settings. Resistance to Enzalutamide arises within 3-6 months, with patients developing terminal castrate-resistant (CR)-MPC. There are no effective therapies for CR-MPC. Our data support a novel concept that Stat5 promotes development of Enzalutamide-resistant prostate cancer (ERPC). We previously showed that Stat5 induces metastatic behavior of PC cells. Also, Enzalutamide has been shown to induce metastatic phenotype of PC. Our new data show that Enzalutamide induces Jak2-Stat5 activation in PC. This proposal will test whether Enzalutamide induction of Jak2-Stat5 signaling in PC mediates Enzalutamide promotion of CR-MPC and may result in a new therapeutic strategy for ERPC by exploiting Jak2-Stat5 pathway inhibitors that are in clinical development for leukemias.

Our goal is that this project results in development of a new therapy for ERPC.

2022 Research for a Cure 2022 Progress Report from WBCS Professor Hallgeir Rui, MD, PhD I am excited to provide an update on breast cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Despite the two years of pandemic challenges, great progress continues to be made at the MCW Cancer Center. The Cancer Center is in great hands under new leadership. The new director, Dr. Gustavo Leone, has since 2020 brought impressive vision and energy to the Cancer Center’s efforts to gain NCI-designation. Supporting these efforts, Dr. Mary Horwitz has taken on the role of deputy director. Attesting to key progress under the new leadership, a very successful Cancer Center scientific retreat was held at the Discovery World in mid-May. Advanced research was highlighted, including studies of breast and prostate cancer, which are the focal areas of support by WBCS. Among the most stimulating aspects of working at MCW are the outstanding colleagues, staff and trainees. Below I will briefly highlight some of the recent progress and efforts related to breast cancer research by MCW faculty members. Outstanding work spans the range from basic and translational studies of the molecular features of breast cancer, to clinical studies focused on improving diagnostic methods and exploring better treatments, to population science and investigations into how to improve the health of breast cancer survivors.

MCW is fortunate to have a strong team of researchers focusing on population science, community outreach, and disparities in breast cancer risk and survival. These investigators include Drs. Melinda Stolley, Joan Neuner, Kirsten Beyer, Tina Yen, Amanda Kong, Ellen Velie, Jamila Kwarteng, Sailaja Kamaraju, Ann Nattinger and others. Important progress is being made in understanding differences in risk factors for developing breast cancer, and understanding disparities in survival among patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Key areas of investigation include socioeconomic factors, race/ethnicity, stress, nutrition, obesity, and exercise. An effort led by Drs. Nattinger and Beyer showed that breast cancer patients who lived in neighborhoods with restricted mortgage access had lower odds of surviving, even among women with health insurance.

Dr. Velie published the first report describing the Young Women’s Health History Study, which is a large case-control study of nearly 2000 women with the goal of identifying risk factors for breast cancer in young Black and White women. Dr. Velie and her team collected life-course exposures from in-person interviews, including information on socioeconomic, reproductive, and energy balance factors. My laboratory has the fortune to collaborate with Dr. Velie on analyses of molecular features of these tumors, which is important to consider since risk factors likely differ between breast cancer subtypes. In other work, the laboratories of Drs. Carol Williams, Amit Joshi, Ben Gantner, Guan Chen, Pradeep ChaluvallyRaghavan, Sunila Pradeep, and Ling Wang carry out exciting and innovative basic and translational work on specific molecular signaling pathways in breast tumors or develop and use novel imaging technologies to detect breast cancer.

My laboratory continues to work on methods to match patients more effectively with optimal treatments. An important collaborative effort published last fall, documented more accurate drug testing of patient breast cancer when grown in a new mouse strain that we developed with a hormone profile that better matches that of patients. This collaboration was supported in part

by WBCS and involved many MCW faculty members, including

Drs. Yunguang Sun, John Langenheim, Julie Jorns, Sharon Tsaih and Marja Nevalainen. More than half of breast cancer deaths are caused by therapy-resistant, estrogen receptor-positive disease. Research progress has been hampered by the lack of experimental breast cancer models for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer that mimics human tumors and metastasize in mice. The hormone prolactin collaborates with estrogen and is a risk factor for development of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Because we discovered that mouse prolactin fails to activate human receptors on patient breast tumors, we developed mice with human prolactin.

In these new mice, it is much easier to grow human breast tumors. We have generated a panel of untreated, estrogendependent tumors that also spontaneously metastasize.

Extensive molecular profiling of patient tumors grown in these mice allowed us to identify several effective treatment strategies.

Drug testing of patient-derived tumors in these mice is expected to help inform treatment selection for patients in the future. We also continue to apply new methods to measure patient tumor markers, including profiling of tumor-infiltrating immune cells, to help individualize treatment selection with immune-boosting drugs. We work closely with clinician scientists to employ these tumor biomarkers in novel breast cancer clinical trials at MCW/ Froedtert hospital, including Drs. Lubna Chaudhary, Sailaja Kamaraju, Yee Chung Chen, Adam Currey and Julie Jorns.

The generous funds raised by the dedicated WBCS members continue to support the thriving breast cancer and prostate cancer research programs at MCW. Investigators are spending the funds wisely for maximum research impact and progress, and the work leads to further research support from federal and foundation sources. Hope, optimism and excitement for breast cancer research continue to flourish. ~

Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence (PC-COE) At MCW Cancer Center~A Brief Overview The Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence (PC-COE), at the MCW Cancer Center (MCWCC), is a multidisciplinary active research hub of both basic and clinical scientists with research focus on prostate cancer. The PC-COE includes researchers from the three MCWCC Research Programs (Cancer Biology-CB, Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics-DDT and Cancer Prevention and Outcomes-CPO) and the PCCOE works closely with both the Community Outreach & Engagement Section and the Clinical Trials Office of the MCWCC. Since founded in 2018, the PC-COE has been led by Dr. Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD (Professor, Pathology) and Dr. William See, MD, (Professor, Chair, Urology) as the Clinical Co-Director. After the retirement of Dr. See, Dr. William A. Hall, MD (Associate Professor, Radiation Dr. Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD Dr. William A. Hall, MD Oncology) has been named as the new Clinical Professor, Pathology Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology Co-Director of the PC-COE. Drs. Ken Jacobsohn, MD research initiatives focused on prostate cancer. The structure (Professor, Urology) and Scott Johnson MD (Associate and composition of the PC-COE enables formulation of Professor, Urology) are the Surgical Urology Liaisons for the research initiative on diagnostic tools, predictive biomarkers PC-COE. 2022 Showhouse Dedication Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) physician scientist Marja Nevalainen, MD, PhD carries prestigious academic titles reflective of her expertise, talent and commitment to medicine and research: Professor, Eminent Scholar, MCW Department of Pathology and Pharmacology/Toxicology; Co-Director, Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence (PC-COE) within the MCW Cancer Center; and MCW Assistant Dean of Research. In December 2020, Dr. Nevalainen added a title to the personal side of her life equation: breast cancer patient.

In a recent interview, Dr. Nevalainen spoke about the realization she faced with this new and unwelcome personal challenge.

“A cancer diagnosis can strike, non-exclusively, anyone. A cancer diagnosis gives a renewed sense of meaning to the phrase that life is very short. My breast cancer diagnosis shocked my family, especially my teenage daughters, causing them varying levels of depression, as they also dealt with the isolation and social restrictions of Covid at the same time.”

Looking at her diagnosis from a clinical perspective, Dr. Nevalainen felt she was in a privileged position to address her daughters’ emotions with knowledge and information, both as a cancer scientist and as a physician, to help manage their fears about what the future might hold. Professionally, she observed, it was renewed validation of her research philosophy: “While basic science in cancer research is important, it is equally important to make sure that what is being done at the bench side can be translated and will be translated to actual therapy development and patient stratification methods to improve cancer care at the bedside.”

Dr. Nevalainen was recruited to MCW in 2015, when her spouse, Hallgeir Rui, MD, PhD, was successfully recruited to MCW as the Founding WBCS, Inc. Endowed Professor of Breast Cancer Research.

She left academic roles as Cancer Center Associate Director (Education/Training), Co-Director, PhD Program, Genetic, Genomic and Cancer Biology, Thomas Jefferson University, and Co-Director, Greater Philadelphia Prostate Cancer Working Group, Department of Cancer Biology and Urology, the NCI designated Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.

When asked what inspired her to accept an MCW faculty appointment, Dr. Nevalainen responded, “The opportunity to work in an emerging new cancer center in the active growth phase in an academic institution with basic science integrated tightly with the clinical enterprise was intriguing. This setting provides an excellent opportunity to bring mature cancer biology findings to the clinical space. I saw the opportunity of building prostate cancer research within the MCW Cancer Center.”

In addition, Dr. Nevalainen credits William A. See, MD, now retired MCW Department of Urology Professor and Chair, as critical for her recruitment to MCW. Dean Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Provost and Executive Vice President, The Julia A. Uihlein, MA, Dean of the School of Medicine, impressed her as an excellent, supportive and friendly leader.

In partnership with the MCW Cancer Center, WBCS focuses its support on research to defeat both breast cancer and prostate cancer. Ironically, added to the good fortune of MCW’s ability to attract together two nationally recognized physician scientists who are specialists in these fields, Drs. Nevalainen and Rui purchased the 2015 WBCS, Inc. Showhouse for a Cure as their new residence.

One might easily assume their relocation to MCW and to Milwaukee was written in the stars.

Dr. Nevalainen‘s aspirational goals as co-founder and co-director of the Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence are many. Among the top priorities, she includes building an excellent, multi-disciplinary prostate cancer research program that will help MCW obtain National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation by supporting the key research programs critical for the MCW Cancer Center Support Grant (Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Program, Cancer Biology Program and Cancer Prevention and Outcomes Program). Another critical goal is to build a highly collaborative group of faculty and trainees whose shared focus is on prostate cancer research and improvement of cancer care, in addition to expanding collaborative papers and grants.

When asked about what the PC-COE is achieving that is translating into better treatments and increased patient survival, Dr. Nevalainen responded, “We are identifying new therapeutic targets, bridging developmental therapies to new clinical trials in the prostate cancer space, refining innovative new imaging for improved diagnostics of prostate cancer, improving radiation therapy (RT) of prostate cancer by better patient stratification and development of adjuvant therapies for RT, and, not least, insuring improved community outreach programs for prostate cancer patients and survivors.”

2022 Christy Foote Fighter Award Kadie and Steve Jelenchick Local power couple Kadie and Steve Jelenchick have been chosen as recipients of the 2022 WBCS Christy Foote Fighter Award. Established in 2014, the award recognizes the tireless efforts of individuals or entities to help defeat breast cancer and prostate cancer through research.

Upon their acceptance of the award, Kadie remarked, “To join the distinguished roster of honorees has great meaning for us. Not necessarily for the personal recognition, but knowing our participation and involvement over the years has benefited the organization in an impactful way for a sustained period of time in the hopes of funding much needed cures.”

WBCS, Inc. was founded in 1998. Also, in 1998, Kadie enrolled as a freshman at the University of Rochester. There, she earned a Biomedical Engineering degree, with distinction, in 2002. That same year, Kadie matriculated at the University of Houston Law Center, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, in 2005.

Steve received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1998, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Marquette University in 2001.

The adage “three’s a charm” might be invoked for the year 1998’s significance for the future intersection of the WBCS mission with Kadie and Steve in the year 2009. That year, Kadie readily agreed to take on the invitation and challenge by WBCS to help establish an event to attract support for its research mission by young professionals.

As a co-founder and organizer of what began as Raise a Glass to Hope, and is now the Showhouse preview gala moniker, Kadie and Steve reached out to their extensive networks to engage wide support. Looking back, the couple said of the inaugural event, “It was a fun and successful evening raising money for such an important Milwaukee-based all-volunteer organization grounded in science and research.”

Kadie accepted the invitation by WBCS to join its board in 2010 and served until 2018, including taking on the mantle of board chair from 2012-2015. Kadie also co-chaired significant fundraising events to raise awareness and dollars for research, continuing to co-chair Raise a Glass to Hope until 2012 and the WBCS Tee Up for a Cure golf outing from 2015-2017.

Steve is Kadie’s full partner in making their philanthropic support of charitable events a success. As a couple, they continue as significant participants of Tee Up for a Cure. Fittingly, the formal CFFA presentation by WBCS to Kadie and Steve will take place at the outing on Monday, August 29, 2022. A Commercial Litigator in his professional life, and sometimes on the course, Steve is a partner at the law firm of Beck, Chaet, Bamberger & Polsky, S.C., where he has been for 19 years.

Opening their “Castle on Newberry” as the 2013 Showhouse for a Cure is a highlight in the annals of WBCS. Steve was Homeowner Liaison that year, guiding much of the process.

Kadie reminisced about how they felt opening their home. “Our experience was extremely positive. It allowed us to amplify our support to the organization and the [MCW] Cancer Center in a more personal and meaningful way. The design review board was faithful to its charge in selecting, agreeing, and stewarding an overall design aesthetic that we incorporated into our Eastside home, which we had just recently purchased and still live in today.

The added benefit is the friendships we cemented along the way.”

Kadie also reflected on that year’s “younger crowd” event, from the perspective of having been its 2009 co-founder and co-chair.

“We will always remember the Raise a Glass to Hope party that was thrown on Newberry Boulevard, which was quite a spectacle.”

Offering some advice to potential Showhouse hosts, she added, “The volunteers and Showhouse operatives always had our best interests in mind. We encourage anyone considering the possibility of making their home the Showhouse to take that chance. As the marquee event for the organization, it is vital to have a Showhouse to get to the cures.”

Kadie’s philanthropic bent, as is Steve’s, is woven into both her private and professional worlds, as she lends her energy and expertise to philanthropic initiatives. She has received many awards to recognize the importance of her involvement.

Kadie was recruited to Milwaukee’s lauded Foley & Lardner LLP, as Associate in 2005, becoming Partner in 2015. She is an integral member and Vice-Chair of the Firm’s nationally recognized intellectual property litigation practice. In addition, as part of Firm Governance, since 2014 Kadie has been the Firm’s Vice-Chair of the National Pro Bono Committee. She commented, “At the executive level, I have the opportunity to directly impact Firm-wide strategy and attorney pro bono engagement with more than 90% of my colleagues across 24 offices participating in efforts to provide meaningful access to quality legal representation for individuals and organizations with limited means.”

Kadie and Steve bring time, talent, treasure, heart, and their extensive networks, not only to WBCS, but to countless personal and professional philanthropic efforts. As a couple, and as individuals, they help make possible that which many might easily deem impossible to achieve. Naysayers, stand aside.

A Showhouse with a Majestic History The 2022 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse’s Architectural Gem on Milwaukee’s East Side

Sitting majestically on the edge of a high bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, one of Milwaukee’s finest Tudor-style mansions has been chosen as the 2022 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse. Located at 3230 East Kenwood Boulevard in Milwaukee, the 25,553-square-foot grand mansion was originally designed with 14 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms and 10 fireplaces for Myron T. MacLaren and Gertrude Schlesinger Roller MacLaren

by Fitzhugh Scott, Sr. The asymmetrical structure is architecturally significant as one of the Midwest’s finest and purest example of Tudor-style mansions as it adheres closely to the historical precedent of the Tudor style. It was constructed with authentic materials, with no expense spared, and the very finest craftsmanship. It is also significant as one of the major works of the firm Scott & Mayer Architects.

The permit to build the house was obtained in July, 1920 and shows an estimated cost of $85,000 although the final cost was said to be $335,000. Before construction began, to prevent erosion, Mrs. MacLaren insisted that the steep embankment of the bluff be reinforced with drain tile, steel rods, concrete walls and thick plantings.

Construction was started in 1920 and was not completed until June, 1923. Gertrude MacLaren and her father traveled to Europe several times during the construction period to buy decorative elements from estates and castles in England, Scotland and France for inclusion in the house. The trips to Europe and the death of Mrs. MacLaren’s father in 1921 halted the construction work several times.

The original plan for the estate included a sunken garden surrounding the “largest private swimming pool in Wisconsin”, a garage connected to the home by an eight-foot high underground tunnel, tennis courts, a fish pond, and a private 20

beach at the foot of the bluff. The estate’s grounds were filled with over 100 elm trees, which were lost to Dutch elm disease in the 1970s. Footings for a garage, which was to match the style of the house, were built but construction never materialized.

The MacLarens had purchased the same stone to be used on the exterior of the house. They buried these materials on the site for safekeeping for the garage they had planned to build. Recently, the current homeowner located the stone two feet below the ground. Architectural historian, H. Russell Zimmerman, has designed a new garage. The foundation has been poured and the garage will be mid-construction during the showhouse run.

The exterior is clad with imported brown Plymouth stone.

The original roof was made of slate quarried in Scotland.

That roof was replaced in 2011 with compatible Vermont slate of variegated green and purple. The roof begins with large and thick pieces of slate at the eaves and tapers down to smaller and thinner pieces at the ridge. The leaded gutters hold the motifs of the Tudor rose and French fleur-de-lis. The roof is pierced by numerous chimney stacks with tall chimney pots.

The façade includes an arched opening recessed within an arched porch. The large oriel window above the arched main entrance holds four hand-painted heraldic crests purchased by Mrs. MacLaren and said to have come from old English castles and manor houses. Numerous casement windows are placed randomly and tall gables decorate the asymmetrical exterior.

Window sashes hold highly ornamental leaded glazing patterns.

A corner tower contains the entrance to the service wing.

The grandeur of the interior holds many treasures as well.

Carefully selected rugs were chosen to add scale and color and the vintage chandeliers were curated from the owner’s lighting collection.

Lots of comfortable seating is available for guests to enjoy the artwork and beautiful room.

A fireplace expertly finished by Carrie Chimenti is the focal point for the room. The historical paneled walls add a layer of warmth and character that is the perfect backdrop for the pop art in the room. Yves Klein coffee tables were selected to give the room life and energy with their dramatic colors and texture.

The result of all these pieces together is one of comfort but excitement, historical but yet designed for today.

A sophisticated palette of blacks, grays, and whites, mixed with some wood elements keep it warm and inviting. Pops of brass along with soft blues and natural greens add a bit of personality to the environment.

This room is rich, cozy, and masculine with hints of worldly colors and textures. Believe it or not, the space was originally painted white! The new trim, ceiling and wall color brings an intensity to the space that pushes guests to focus on the beautiful built-in bookshelves, now highlighted with watercolor metallic wallpaper and layered with memories. The rugs in the space feature traditional designs in vibrant colors, and layering the rugs lends to a more eclectic casual feel perfect for swanky evening gatherings with friends whether you’re wearing jeans and a t-shirt or a tuxedo.

I dedicate this space to all of the amazing designers (who are now mentors) and tradespeople I’ve met over the years working on this project-they were key in me starting my business in 2020.

Our tablescape features mythical creatures, starcrossed lovers and a riotous color palette designed to celebrate the 2022 Dragon Boat Festival.

Dining Chairs were brought into the 21st century with F. Schumacher upholstery and whimsical Brimar tassel trim. Custom window treatments were fabricated to filter sunlight while giving the room a modern mood; the Ikat fabric pattern pays homage to the room's rug design. Standing at the window, Quan Yin watches over our room offering compassion and mercy.

Intentionally eclectic, this room crosses generations and cultures to create an elegant but lively space.

The success of this kitchen results from the design partnership with the homeowner to create layers of interest with a strong historic architectural theme. Dreaming of leaning into a traditional English country kitchen the process unfolded. Thankfully, the existing footprint of this home allowed for a kitchen of vast proportions by incorporating the original butler’s pantry with the rest of the kitchen space. Through wall mounted pot racks, European stove and antique island coupled with a timelessness of modernity in deep purple played against the more neutral stone wall and cream-colored island and stove gave us the depth in color play needed to stand alone as well as support the owner’s contemporary artwork.

Using its original cabinetry to accommodate modern amenities while maintaining its history, we combined antique items such as the large island, an early 1900’s mercantile counter, with the richness of bronze/copper accents throughout, giving new brilliance to the grand space. Strategic architectural lighting highlights the volume of space to incorporate an artistic quality with the pendants and accentuating the owner’s artwork as well as creating various lighting schemes to accommodate mood with time of day.

The strength of the room’s look is translated through built-in/panel-ready appliances, large slab counters, integration of custom copper sheet designs within the upper cabinets (mirroring the home’s lovely leaded windows), and one-of-akind copper-plated Aga stove accents to compliment the copper exhaust hood.

Corner Observatory Nicholas Carl Design Nicholas Konzal 414.510.3449 nick@nicholascarldesign.com www.nicholascarldesign.com Room Dedicated to Mariza Konzal The design inspiration for this cozy corner sitting room came from the view outside. I wanted to bring the view outside inside through oil paintings and photography of the sea when you first walk in, this sets the scene for the unparalleled view of the lake. Inside the room you are greeted with the warmth of full grain leather walls. Adorned in rich cognac-colored leather, we went through the detailed task of hand cutting and installing over 50 hides of leather to the walls-an installation taking over a week to complete.

The ceiling has a bronze mylar paper installed to give the reflection of the sun off the water into the room and reflected back through the ceiling.

The result is a rich bronze glow into the room. Lighting was selected for its ambiance and radiance, a crystal globe chandelier was installed to give a sparkle of light in the room. Color was added in the upholstered pieces to give a sense of elegance; the emerald pillows and navy sofa play well off each other and add a sophistication to the room. Antiques mix with modern pieces in this classic room. The result of the details in the room combine to create a space for reflection, inspiration, warmth, beauty, and entertainment.

There was a time when murals were primarily hand-painted Chinese panels and French panoramas. Digital printing technology has made the once luxury mural more accessible to the homeowner. It has allowed us to bring the outdoors in with botanical and nature scenes that can fill an entire wall or define a space.

My hope is that guests find a sense of calm, beauty, and peace during their stay in this room!

Created in love to honor our family members, friends and clients who have bravely fought a cancer battle, while remembering with fondness those we carry in our hearts.

The existing bathroom was smaller space with a single sink, narrow tub, small space for the toilet and a very tight shower.

The original space was enlarged.

Creating a luxurious space for guests with dual sinks, and a large shower area was desired.

The owner wanted the tile materials to reflect older Milwaukee homes. Hand made “subway” style tile echo back to a time when not everything was made by machine. The floor tile, white squares with black dots, unified the vision the owner wanted for this bathroom. Keeping with the historic feel of the home, the plumbing fixtures are all chrome.

3rd Floor Gallery & Hall of History Continuing the Collaboration of Suzan J Designs and Modern Health Living 3rd Floor Gallery The 60 foot long hallway is less than 6 feet wide. It was a challenge to design it in such a way as to make it interesting while also having it serve as the gateway to the other areas of the 3rd floor. We had a few parameters to work around, such as several specific pieces of art from the homeowner’s vast collection as well as limited options to change things like wall color. We decided to create multiple vignettes, with each one speaking to a different style, color, vibe, genre. The coup in this space was getting a rug runner, thanks to a local rug dealer, that was long enough and colorful enough to anchor the space.

Hallway of History The homeowner loves all things Milwaukee history. The home itself has a wonderful historical background; there is a room on the 3rd floor solely dedicated to that. The mural was created from a favorite photo of Milwaukee’s lakefront when the Chicago & North Western Railway resided there. The mural combines the homeowner’s love of Milwaukee, the lakefront, architecture and trains. The railway once stood near the existing War Memorial and Calatrava, so we blended old and new in this hallway. We also wanted to give a nod to celebrities who have ties to Milwaukee, and the space ends with the original blueprint of the home, courtesy of the homeowner.

The room was too small to use as a bedroom, and another sitting room was not needed on the 3rd floor.

The room was just large enough for a desk, and this one can adjust so that it can be used either standing or sitting - perfect for standing while wrapping and sitting while addressing cards. A wrapping paper dispenser is permanently attached to the wall, making it easy to wrap. Colorful walls with angled stripes makes the room bold and fun - no wall art needed.

As a nod to the original intent and also, as fur coats are no longer in vogue, I, instead, designed the room for the furry family dog and also for Sam, Susann’s dog who has helped her through the past several months.

It is an honor to dedicate this room to my very dear, young friend, Susann, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and is presently undergoing treatment. Her courage is an inspiration to all who know and love her.

Podcast Room Podcast Room and a Nod to the Musical Past Andy Nunemaker When my friends and I first saw the space on the third floor originally used as a playroom by the MacLaren family, we envisioned a podcast studio with an adjacent recording studio. AV and IT specialist Tom Smith collaborated with recording artist Alex Grams to create a space in which bands or artists could record their work.

They also created a podcast room reminiscent of the early recording rooms of the 1950s. The vintage record players belonged to my parents, and most of the record sleeves on the walls were from my parents’ collection-with the records still in the sleeves.

The lakefront depot is one of the lost treasures of Milwaukee. When I saw that Philadelphia-based artist Kambel Smith had created a sculpture of the depot, I immediately thought it belonged in Milwaukee.”

History Room Andy Nunemaker, Homeowner Shortly after I purchased the MacLaren house, I received several calls and visits from MacLaren family members and early residents of Kenwood Hall.

They brought photographs, historical records and other artifacts from the home’s past.

I also found the original architectural drawings in the archives of the Milwaukee Public Library as well as architectural models from UWM. Since so many people had an interest in the history of the house, we decided to create a ‘History Room’ where guests could peruse the items and follow the history themselves.

It’s an odd little area, too large to be a hallway, too unusually shaped to be an actual room. We chose to create a quaint sitting area, accenting the space with a uniquely shaped sofa.

We lightened up the walls in a neutral gray/white which allowed us to showcase some colorful original art.

coming in from the pool through the Sunroom led them straight upstairs without dripping water on the main staircase. It was also used by Mrs. MacLaren when coming in from the garden with muddy boots. Both MacLaren daughters were married in the Sunroom.

The Library features a green marble fireplace, built-in book cases and decorative dental ceiling moldings. The family gathered in the Library every night to play games or listen to the radio. The first commercial radio broadcast was received on Election Day, November 2, 1920. This room was recently transformed into a Billiards Room.

The Living Room walls are a reproduction of Elizabethan oak paneling assembled with wooden dowel pegs that hide a number of compartments and storage areas. A focal point in the room is the large carved stone fireplace with a rose motif in the raised plaster above it. Inside the fireplace, as in all others in the house, is a cast iron fireback (one of which is dated A.D. 1588) installed to protect the intricate stone or marble from the heat of the fire.

Imported stained glass medallions from France decorate the Front Entry Hall windows. A broad staircase with a carved balustrade leads to the second floor.

White oak was used for the floors in the mahogany paneled Dining Room. A fireplace of green Italian marble, built-in bookcases and, decorative ceiling cornices grace the room.

The spectacular crystal chandelier was transported from Paris to Milwaukee by Mrs. MacLaren’s father in five suitcases.

It was understood by the family that they were to convene in the Dining Room for dinner each evening.

The Breakfast Room features hand-hewn beams and two sandstone walls. Two walls facing Lake Michigan present leaded and stained glass windows holding more heraldic crests. The single piece on the northeast corner, with a ship at the bottom, is said to be the MacLaren family crest.

The Kitchen originally hosted a special opal glass-lined refrigerator that opened from both sides. There was a countertop island with a lazy susan. Mrs. MacLaren kept her silver flatware and jewelry in a walk-in safe at the south end of the kitchen when she was traveling. An elevator shaft between the Foyer and Butler’s Pantry was constructed but no elevator was ever installed. A Help’s Room just inside the tower entrance was used as a dining room and lounge for the servants.

The Kitchen/Butler’s Pantry and Help’s Room were all reconfigured under UWM’s ownership. The space has recently been transformed into a state-of-the art English Country Kitchen and Mud Room.

The second floor had six bedrooms, one each for the MacLarens and the four children. All but one had a fireplace.

Mrs. MacLaren’s south bedroom had leaded glass windows on three sides of the room. The current owner has reconfigured this area into a master bedroom suite. A library was used as Mrs. MacLaren’s office where she planned many social activities.

One more small room with a corner sink was referred to as the Nurse’s Room, but was probably used by the nanny. Tucked 60

into the corners were small rooms used by the servants as a sewing/ironing room, a large walk-in linen closet, and other storage spaces.

Each room on the third floor had a distinct purpose. The large room on the northeast corner was the children’s playroom. It featured a swing hanging from the ceiling and the daughters kept their dollhouses in this room. There was a suite of rooms on the south side where a family member or guest could be isolated should they contract a communicable disease. Two bedrooms, one for the patient and one for a nurse and a full bathroom, could all be closed off completely from the rest of the house. The cook’s room was located near the northwest stairway and other rooms were designated for the upstairs maid, the downstairs made, houseman, outside caretaker and butler. Several small closets were used for storage of furs, trunks, and draperies.

Ten fireplaces filled the house, five of which have been walled in. The current homeowner has plans to bring all of them back to their original state over the course of the next several years.

Myron T. MacLaren was born in Milwaukee in 1886. His mother died shortly after his birth and he spent the majority of his childhood living in Canada with his grandparents. After moving back to Milwaukee to live with his father, he attended the old Milwaukee Academy and went on to graduate from Williams College in Massachusetts. After his return, he worked for his father who was the manager of Gimbel Bros. Subsequently, he worked as a bank teller, a bond salesman, and a mortgage broker for several financial institutions and businesses.

Gertrude Schlesinger was born in 1889, the daughter of Ferdinand and Matilda Stern Schlesinger. Her father, a prosperous industrialist, was reputed to be the “most wealthy Milwaukeean of his generation”. The family frequently traveled to Europe.

In 1909, on one of the trips, Gertrude met and married Oskar Roller, an Austrian army officer. They had one son, Gordon, and lived primarily in Europe until she filed for divorce in 1917. Oskar died shortly before the divorce was finalized in September 1918.

Gertrude married Myron MacLaren later that same year.

Soon after the marriage, Myron began working for the Schlesinger family business. He soon became a member of the most prominent clubs in Milwaukee and Gertrude served on several board of directors. Myron eventually left the family business and became an officer of the Mitchell Street State Bank.

In addition to Gertrude’s son Gordon from her first marriage, the MacLarens adopted three more children. Douglas and Mary were named after Gertrude’s Hollywood friends Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks and Gertrude was named after her mother, but called Peggy.

Myron and Gertrude MacLaren were divorced in 1927.

Gertrude remained in the mansion while Myron moved to the Astor Hotel. He married Mary A. Stock in 1930 and moved to Whitefish Bay. He was widowed in 1934. Gertrude married Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company executive Clifford McMillen in 1929 and moved to New York. Gertrude and Clifford were divorced in 1936. From 1928 to 1936 the mansion was empty and was maintained by a caretaker.

With Gertrude and Myron both single, they remarried in Manhattan in 1936 and moved back into the mansion.

During this time, the property was described in several newspaper articles as “the scene of much of Milwaukee’s social life”. Myron died in the home in 1941 and is buried in Forest Home Cemetery.

Gertrude lived alone in the house for several years until she married Theron MacLeod in 1948. They then moved to California and lived next door to Fairbanks and Pickford. They divorced in 1950 and shortly after Gertrude married Douglas Parmentier of Beverly Hills who died in 1967. In 1969, Gertrude married William Joseph Marios. She died in 1974 at the age of 84 and is buried in California.

During the MacLaren time in the mansion, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks visited several times. They were so impressed by the style and elegance of the home it is said that they used the MacLaren mansion as the inspiration for their renowned home “Pickfair”, a remodeled hunting lodge in Beverly Hills.

In 1949 at a cost of $75,000 plus $5,000 for furnishings, the mansion was acquired by the Board of Regents of Normal Schools, State of Wisconsin (also known as the Milwaukee State Teacher’s College) to be used as a women’s residence hall. It accommodated 50 women. It was named Downer College Hall from 1950 to 1952 and Kenwood Hall from 1952 to 1964.

In early 1960, Eleanor Roosevelt spent the night in Kenwood Hall while at UWM delivering a speech on women’s rights.

After its tenure as a dorm, the mansion was renamed Kenwood Conference Center and housed UWM’s Center for Great Lakes as well as the Office of Continuing Education for Adults from 1969 to 1975. The UWM Alumni Association and UWM Foundation occupied the building from the late 1970s to 2010. The name was formerly changed to the UWM Alumni House in 1983.

The UWM Alumni Association and the UWM Foundation occupied the building along with the Helen Bader Institute for Non-Profit Management and WUWM Innovative Weather offices. In 2011, the Alumni Association moved to the Hefter Conference Center at 3217 N. Lake Drive and the Foundation to Cambridge Commons. UWM will retain an easement on the property to allow freshwater intake from Lake Michigan for cooling other buildings on the campus.

In 1991, the City of Milwaukee’s Historic Preservation Commission designated the Myron T. MacLaren House a Historic Structure. It is listed on the Wisconsin State Historical Registry and is located in the Historic Water Tower Neighborhood. It also has an interior historical easement from the State Historical Society.

Andy Nunemaker, Milwaukee entrepreneur and philanthropist, bought the mansion in January, 2021. Andy is committed to restoring the original single- family mansion back to its original purpose and grandeur. The MacLaren residence is the third house that Andy has graciously shared with Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse to be used as its major annual fundraiser for the benefit of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s research for breast cancer and prostate cancer.
