UPTOWN MOTORS A Foundation of Unified Family Teamwork

UPTOWN MOTORS IS A THRIVING family-owned dealership and has been throughout its long and successful history, steered by three generations of the Pentler family. The dealer group currently has several longstanding locations: Uptown Ford Lincoln at 2111 North Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa; Uptown Chevrolet at 1101 East Commerce Blvd. in Slinger; and Uptown Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram at 1111 East Commerce Blvd. in Slinger.

Uptown Motors originally began in 1946 when Irv Pentler and his brother Ray opened a used car lot. Irv sold the Mercury Convertible he had put away when he was in World War II and bought three used cars to start the business. The family business grew and flourished over time; the original business took its name from the Uptown neighborhood in Wauwatosa around the Center Street area. Uptown Motors has existed in its current location since 1966.

John Pentler, General Manager at Uptown Motors, is a passionate third-generation participant in his family’s thriving business. He works alongside his father, Glenn Pentler, who is “very active in the business;” John’s brother Mark works in the dealership’s Slinger locations. According to John Pentler, the family’s business has grown over the years due to “a lot of hard work, a lot of good things going on.”

Pentler indicated that as a family, he and his father and brother work to see each other’s strengths.

Part of the enduring success his family business has enjoyed may come in part from this cohesive and team-based, cooperative approach to management.

John Pentler views family business as “a great opportunity,” and he approaches his work knowing that he comes to his job with “a different skill set” than his brother. He views this as an asset, stating that “an appreciation and understanding” of each individual’s unique strengths “[goes] a long way.”

The Pentler family recently opened two new locations of their business in Wauwatosa: Uptown Lincoln, located at 2001 N. Mayfair Road, and a new truck service center at 1501 N. Mayfair Road. At the new Uptown Lincoln showroom, customers will find a “welcoming, lowkey atmosphere,” Pentler said, a “very calm” show room where clients can “take the [purchasing] process at [their] own pace.”

The store will likely also serve many customers who are returning more frequently to select a car to lease.

Pentler noted that the team at Uptown Motors will continue to “excel in taking care of people are help them find what they are looking for.” He additionally mentioned that the new Lincoln store is visible from the freeway and offers Uptown “a better space to cater to luxury clients.”

Uptown Motors n n n The new Uptown truck service center offers an exciting opportunity for Uptown Motors to “fill a big need in Milwaukee right now,” according to John Pentler. There, technicians will be equipped to work on bigger vehicles such as transit vans, Ford Super Duty trucks, and RVs. The Uptown Ford showroom will continue to handle sales of all Ford vehicles.

Businesses who employ this larger class of service vehicle depend on keeping their fleet operational. When work needs to be done, it must be completed promptly to allow business

activities to continue to flow. Pentler noted that, in addition to the exciting opportunity the truck service center will provide in filling this important community business need, it will also create a positive cycle of return. Many of the clients who bring vehicles in for service will then come back to purchase vehicles at Uptown.

Uptown Motors has successfully navigated a variety of challenges through its long history, including the 1970s fuel crisis, high interest rates in the 1980s, and the tragedies associated with September 11, 2001. John Pentler noted that recent challenges have included disruptions with supply chains and car manufacturers

being shut down, which sometimes meant that Uptown might have two new cars in stock rather than the 150 cars they are accustomed to. Pentler emphasized the importance of being able to “work with the market you have” as well as his family’s special ability to “sit with clients, [to] work with them to get them what they want in the most efficient way possible.”

For the Pentler family, their exceptional client base of support serves as another asset that has helped propel Uptown Motors to its current success. “We are very fortunate to have the customers we have,” John Pentler stated. One of the ways the Pentler family has built this base of customer support through the years is by being present at their business each day and by listening to their customers’ needs. “We enjoy talking to our clients,” Pentler said. “We take pride in being able to be there in a time of need, or a time of want, for that matter.” He noted that the family enjoys visiting with their “very loyal customer base.” In some cases, several generations of a family continue to return to Uptown Motors for their varied auto needs.

For John Pentler, his combined love of people and cars has made his work ideal and fulfilling. He enjoys working with the “style, performance, and uniqueness of cars,” and finds it “fun to see a whole realm of different vehicles out there,” in his words. Through careful listening to his customers’ needs and goals, he then employs his expertise and insight in helping them to select the vehicle that will best fit their needs.

John Pentler stressed the importance of having the “ability to be patient with customers,” to “listen to [them] and offer advice on how to get the most value out of a situation.” He noted that his team at Uptown Motors excels at doing this. The care that Pentler and his family-based team have offered their customers brings him pride. Of his customers, Pentler noted, “they trust us and want to work with us.”

Whether through work, hobbies, or creative endeavors, finding meaningful avenues for discovery and self-expression provide lifelong sources of joy.

Former television broadcasting meteorologist Vince Condella has found creative ways to channel his passion for learning and engaging with the world through his pursuit of photography in his retirement. He has found continued connections between his interests, forging a continuity in his own professional and creative endeavors. Of his career as a meteorologist and his recent work as a photographer, Condella remarked, “Both require technical knowledge and both require seeing things deeper than just the surface. I was trained to view the atmosphere as a threedimensional flowing system. I am training myself as a photographer to view things deeper as well.”

Condella’s interest in photography as a creative medium began in high school, where he was editor of the school newspaper and a

Versatile & Multi-talented n n n member of the yearbook staff. In these roles, he took photos of high school news and sports events with the free black and white film provided him. Condella recalls, “I bought a Minolta SLR camera and photographed events at the school. It was a blast!”

As Condella entered his retirement, he began to explore photographing nature and clouds. At this time in his life, he “was drawn to landscapes and bold colors,” Condella said. “I am training my eyes to see shapes, patterns, and stories in every photograph I take. There is more thought going

into each image compared to my earlier days.”

Condella is a self-taught photographer who captures stunning images of nature, viewable online in his portfolio at www.vincecondella. com. He has drawn inspiration from a variety of online photography resources, particularly Matt Kloskowski (mattk.com), Nicole S. Young (nicolesy.com), and the Bryan Peterson School of Photography (bpsop.com).

Currently, Condella uses a Sony a7r3 mirrorless camera with a full frame sensor to capture his beautiful images. He appreciates the camera’s light weight, noting that “the heaviest components are the lenses that get attached

to the camera body.” He uses a variety of lenses that cover everything from wide-angle views (16-35 mm zoom lens) to telephoto views (100-400 mm lens).

Many of Condella’s photographic images capture the breathtaking beauty of the natural world, as well as the striking interplay of light and shadow on objects in nature. “I used to be drawn to landscapes and broad vistas, but I have expanded my interest over the years to anything and everything, from close-up macrophotography to abstract transcendent images and haiku photography,” Condella explained. “Typically, exterior and nature images draw my interest, but anything that looks interesting, inside or out, is fair game,” he added.

In addition to viewing Condella’s extensive portfolio of photography online, individuals may often see samples of his images on display at the Cedarburg Cultural Center, with works of artists from the Cedarburg Artists Guild. Condella has received honors for his high-quality photography and unique and sensitive artistic vision. These include first place awards and honorable mentions in photography contests such as those from the Wisconsin Area Camera Club Organizations (WACCO), the Cedarburg Artists Guild, the Arizona Camera Club Council, and the Photographic Society of America.

For those interested in launching an exploration of photography as a creative and expressive medium, Condella recommends, “Use the most convenient camera at your disposal, the mobile phone camera. The cameras that now exist in our mobile phones are outstanding. Just start taking images of whatever interests you, and then find photography education online or in books.

There are a lot of good resources available.

Always remember: there are no wrong answers.

Your creativity and imagination are endless!”

Condella carries a spirit of discovery with him as he moves into the future, viewing the beauty of the ever-changing world through the photographic eye of his camera lens. “I want to always learn more, to expand my repertoire. My goal is to have more meaningful photographs, imagery that expresses more than just the mere subject matter.”

Condella reflects upon the vital role of photography in his life, offering a thread of engagement with the world around him throughout his retirement years. “I have been fortunate to enjoy several hobbies in retirement. Propane furnaces also emit up to 50% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electric furnaces, according to the 2018 Gas Technology Institute Report, so you can feel good about your impact on the environment. n Make your home more efficient. As homes age, small cracks can develop around doors and windows and let cold air inside your home or allow warm air to escape. If the seals around the windows and doors are damaged, invest a few minutes to replace them and spend time caulking gaps. When your home is well-insulated, propane can efficiently keep your home toasty during chilly winter months.

Some parts of the United States are banning woodburning fireplaces due to their negative effects on the environment. Propane-powered fireplaces are an alternative that emit less soot and other air-polluting emissions. You can enjoy a toasty fire at the flip of a switch with no ash or soot to clean up and no firewood to store. Many models can also operate during electrical power outages, providing a critical source of heat to the home.

Furnaces There can be a bone-chilling feeling when the furnace goes out in the middle of a cold winter. If your furnace is blowing cold air–or no air at all - it’s time for an upgrade. Before you buy, know propane-powered furnaces have 50% longer lifespans than electric heat pumps, which reduces their overall lifetime cost for homeowners. Before the start of each heating season, have a qualified service technician inspect and service your appliances and propane system. This can help ensure your appliances are running as efficiently as possible. n Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it with everyone in your family.

Post a list with contact information for your propane supplier and emergency services along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity and water. If you need to turn off your propane, contact a service technician to inspect your propane system prior to turning it back on. n Prepare a family disaster supply kit.

Include several days’ worth of water and canned foods, along with a can opener, extra clothes, blankets, flashlights and batteries. Also include a battery-powered weather radio so you can stay informed as conditions change. n Check your chimneys, flue pipes, vent connectors and propane tank for damage, blockage or debris caused by snow and ice.

Use a broom rather than a shovel and clear these areas frequently to help reduce the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. n Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

These detectors can provide you and your family with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location and maintenance. n After a storm passes and it is safe to do so, check the entire area for downed power lines, damaged gas lines or damage to your propane tank. Immediately call your local utility company or propane supplier if any of these hazards exist. Do not attempt repairs yourself. n Never use a stove for space heating and never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, particularly in the event of a power outage. Proper ventilation is necessary for safe operation, and the carbon monoxide fumes can be lethal. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. Never store, place or use a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area. n Conserve energy. Keep thermostats at 65 F during the day and 55 F at night, and close off any rooms that don’t need to be heated. n

ARE YOU SEARCHING for the peace that passeth understanding? The peace that the Nazarene carpenter told his disciples he was leaving with them? The peace that he designated as “my peace”? He differentiated between the peace the world gives and “my peace,” the peace he was giving them. You may remember that he comforted them with those loving words, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

And that word “afraid” should remind you at once of God’s promise as found in the book of Isaiah. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” If we would find peace, we must take that promise literally and rest in it. We can rest in it with assurance if we will but remember Paul’s comforting words to Timothy whom he loved dearly: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.”

If you are earnestly searching for peace, then you must accept these promises, not alone with your mind but with your whole being. An intellectual acceptance is variable.

It is too subject to change. An emotional acceptance has no enduring value. Like most emotional reactions it lacks permanency. The only practical acceptance is a spiritual one because when the Spirit within takes possession of our entire being, our personal world is awakened to the power of spiritual truth. Then, as realization sets in, spiritual peace automatically results.

Our problems would be solved much more quickly if we could but accustom ourselves to turning immediately within, as Jesus did, and be content to permit Him to “do the works.” Of our own selves, we can do nothing. Neither could the Nazarene carpenter. He admitted it openly: “Of mine own self I can do nothing. The Father within doeth the works.” Humanly, we are incapable of finding anything that approaches lasting peace. Yet peace cannot possibly escape us if we turn within for it to the source of our being, and let it pour forth.

Peace lies in our accepting the Omnipresence and Omnipotence of God as the only law governing our lives. However, and again I emphasize, mere intellectual acceptance is not sufficient. It is open to argument.

We must live in obedience to that law by making it the dominating force of our existence. We must learn to live and move and have our being in God, in Spirit, in the Father within, He who will perfect that which concerneth us. Then will we be under the constant government of Omnipresence and Omnipotence. Then will we have attained the peace that passeth understanding. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
