WE LCOME HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL ARMED FORCES & EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMUNITY DIRECTORY FOR 2024 IN ASSOCIATION WITH MILTARY VS CANCER. It gives me great delight to be asked to collate and edit the first ever edition under the guise of Project Editor and produce content for the Armed Forces, Emergency and Volunteer Services communities. Inside the Directory, the reader will find an array of resources with contact details to anything from training providers for those wishing to resettle or retrade, to charities covering the range of communities, to top tips and guidance on keeping your ducks in a row, whilst serving our great nation. On behalf of the NAFESE team, I would like to thank all sponsors, advertisers and supporters for the directory, without your backing, the directory would not be produced without your help. The final thanks goes to you, the reader, be you a firefighter, police officer, volunteer worker, a member of the NHS, a British Army soldier, a sailor, an aviator, a Merchant Navy member, a Veteran of any of the services mentioned, a cadet, spouse or partner to any of our service based communities - thank you for picking up a copy or reading online. We hope the DIrectory remains of constant guidance and relevance throughout 2024. Kind regards Mal Robinson Project Editor,National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Community Directory 2024.

A BOU T THE D IR ECTORY The National Armed Forces & Emergency Services Community Directory 2024 in association with Military vs Cancer is designed to be a turn to resource throughout 2024 for the reader, be they serving in the services or forces, a cadet or veteran, spouse or partner. You are serving or have served our great nation in some form or another, or supporting people who have, or who are. Included inside this publication are a few pointers, tips and general awareness for your reference as well as the all important contact details of a range of companies, bodies and charities and educational providers to assist you throughout the 12 months.

A LWAYS B E PR E PA R E DFOR THE UNEXPECTED I served 9 years in the Royal Air Force and then 6 and a half years as editor of a military resettlement magazine, in between various other roles. Whilst this directory is not predominantly aimed at leaving any of the services communities, nor advising you to do so, there always remains the question of “what next?” in the back of one’s mind, or at least “what if?” I leave my current occupation. For those looking to join any of the services from a cadet or student perspective, it is always good to establish some kind of long term plan and a plan with contingencies built in, remaining fluid for any potential life changes along the way. For those reading this who have served in any of the service related communities, because of the unique nature of the roles in which we played and the workplace families we were part of, some find it easier than others to either retire or resettle and bear this in mind and don’t beat yourself up! Many people in the forces enter the worlds of the blue light

nafese2023.com | 6

or volunteer sectors to maintain this feeling of camaraderie and sense of purpose, whilst many reservists in the forces are professionals in the blue light arena, providing a plethora of synergy between the forces and services. For family members of serving personnel or veterans, there is also a requirement to both support your partner, yet also to have your own support network, to give everyone within your family, the best possible flow of life. Hence, it is always good to have a publication such as this Directory in your hands to provide some support and whilst it may not be an exhaustive list, it may at least provoke some thoughts and advice to either help you in the next steps or help you perform your role with perhaps some of peace of mind. I always tell people, always prepare for the unexpected and I suppose in a professional sense in the services sector, this could be anything from a medical discharge from the forces or a change in family circumstances meaning a relocation from one police force to another, or fire service or NHS Trust. With that in mind, sometimes it is good to get ahead of the game and prepare for that day or in a reactive sense for those who have left the communities, use this publication as a turn to resource in either a primary or secondary sense. Always be prepared, never be afraid to seek advice. Mal Robinson, Project Editor.

Tim Peake - From The Forces To Outer Space The NAFESE 2024 Community Directory covers the entire range of the service and public sector community and to reinforce this notion, Project Editor, Mal Robinson includes his interview with former British Army Major, turned Astronaut for the European Space Agency, originally conducted for NAFESE magazine - Eyes Front! - in which Tim talks about his transition into orbit. We jump straight into the questions about how Tim made Astronaut selection with the European Space Agency and how much of a life changer this was… “For me it was a huge change. We had just had our eldest child who was 3 months old at that point, so new baby and new job, going abroad and we didn’t really know where we were going to live. We were told my training initially would be in Germany, but then we were told by the Space Agency you could live anywhere, it could be Moscow, it could be Houston or Tokyo, so it was a real leap into the unknown. The Space Agency themselves didn’t even know what they were going to do with us, or where we were going to live, but sometimes in life you have to just take these big leaps and just go with the flow.”

Did you realise at the time just how life changing the move was? “No not at all. I had that phone call on the Monday night saying you have been selected. Would you like to come and join us and they say well the announcement is going to be in Paris on Wednesday and so can you make it? I was like Okay let me speak to my boss and ask for the day off and I said well when will I be back to work? They said, we will probably have a drink and a meal after the announcement, so plan on flying back Thursday morning. So, I thought I would take a couple of days off. Yet the reality was, as soon as it was announced on that Wednesday, that I had been selected, Jonathan Amos, the BBC Science reporter was there in Paris and he reported this breaking news and things just went crazy. Before I knew it, we weren’t going for a nice meal and a drink afterwards at all, I was on a Eurostar straight back to London where there were about fifty interviews and went on until about midnight and it was a complete PR frenzy and so nobody expected that from the off.” What was the thinking about joining the European Space Agency as an Astronaut, was it next level career progression in terms of flying? “It was another challenge, the next sort of progression from test flying. I was loving test flying and would have loved to have carried on being a test pilot if I had not been successful with the Space Agency. For me it seemed like doing a test pilot’s job on an International level in a different environment and one that would continue to push the boundaries of technology, engineering and what we are doing in space. And so it seemed like the next level of challenge.” Eyes Front is a free bi-monthly magazine produced by the team at NAFESE.

JO B O P P O CV ADVI CE We live in a time-poor environment – no matter how organised we are, and nowadays, the decision to bring someone in for an interview is made in a matter of seconds. The thing standing between a veteran or service leaver and their ability to sell themselves? Sure there are LinkedIn profiles, covering letters and application forms, but nothing comes close (still) to your CV. Here are a few pointers to help your forces CV. Lose The Military Lingo You might assume your previous rank or position is selfexplanatory. Or maybe that course you went on offered a universally recognised qualification. But, you need to look at every turn of phrase from an outsider’s perspective. That means swapping out words like ‘Troop’ for ‘Team’, ‘Patrol’ for ‘Project’!. Talk ‘I’ not ‘We’ – this is hard and may feel Jack. Avoiding acronyms like ‘WO2’ or ‘MOD’. If you’re like some of the JobOppO team, you might not realise when you’re dropping in military terms, so before sending it off, show your CV to someone who doesn’t have the foggiest about military! If they start asking questions about a word or a job title, then you need to keep working on it. Always assume the reader has no prior knowledge and it’s your job to help them see the merits of each role you’ve held and how it has shaped you as a person. Keep It Concise Not everything on your CV will be relevant to the job you’re applying for. You might think that your first job 20 years ago still needs to appear on your CV for chronological sake, but if it isn’t adding value or showing off a different skill then why include it in detail? Explain The Why It’s easy to describe what you did in previous roles, but your CV shouldn’t resemble your old job spec or a journal. Everytime you write a sentence about a previous responsibility, ask yourself - so what? Why did you do that? What was the outcome/impact? nafese2023.com | 22

Always look to use tangible results (stats, figures, percentages etc) the end of each point as the person reading it needs to be able to see results. Tailor It To The Job We know that this is probably the point where we may lose your attention, because what we’re suggesting takes extra time. But, adapting your CV specifically to the role you’re applying for is well worth the effort – in fact, it’s a must do. Show Off Your Transferable Skills We talk about this ALL the time. If you’re looking for a Civvy job, you need to show how your Military skills are transferable to the workplace you’re hoping to get into. It’s often quite a mental leap for people to realise that the skills you learnt in service can be applied to other environments like an office or a hospital. Make it really clear that your Military experience, whatever it may be, has taught you things you can take into a new role and as importantly, into your new company. Need inspiration? Start with how working in a high-pressured environment built your character - resilience, adaptability, leadership lateral thinking etc. Need more CV advice? Please register on www.JobOppO.co.uk and get in touch with our in-house expert Garrath.

Veterans at Ease was established in 2010 by a veteran who decided that more choice was needed when it came to effective psychological treatments for fellow veterans after his own lived experience of having psychological issues. The charity provides Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy to the men and women who, having served our country, are now struggling. Importantly, our service is openended and free of charge to the service user. All the charity’s therapists are veterans who have that same lived experience, so genuinely understand the issues faced. Around 40% of all those who walk through our door and ask for help are contemplating suicide. Happily, all those men and women are still alive today and thriving thanks to our understanding of what it means serving in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. To enable us to carry on with the great work we are doing, please consider supporting us, either through a one-off donation or regular giving or even by leaving us a legacy in your will. Just scan the appropriate QR Code which will take you directly

to the information you need to help us. • £50 will help pay for a one-hour session with a veteran. • £200 will pay for the materials a trainee therapist needs for their studies. • £500 will pay for a trainee therapist to attend 2 weekend training sessions. Take part in our annual Total Warrior event and enjoy being in the great outdoors with other like-minded people. Scan the QR code below to register. Please think about volunteering for us, we are always looking for motivated people willing to shake a tin or volunteer in one of our shops around the country. Its looks great on your CV and you really will be helping to save a Veteran’s life. If you are a veteran and have the time and desire to come on board as a therapist, email us at info@ veteransatease.org for more details and to speak to the lead psychotherapist. Any money above and beyond costs is then distributed via a small grants scheme to smaller CIC's and Charities who work at grass routes level within the veterans community and have a turnover of under 100k per annum! In the UK we have a huge number of highly successful Armed Forces Veterans that have made the transition from the Military to civilian life we want to reward these veterans who have gone above and beyond and excelled in their relevant fields. They will act as role models for future service leavers. We want to find the people who even during the most difficult periods have excelled. We hope that the individuals/Organizations who get shortlisted at our awards can tell their story and act as role models for future service leavers. We plan to make a series of short videos form our shortlisted finalists giving tips and advice to help other service leavers, hopefully making the transition from the Military to civilian life that little bit easier. Rewarding Veterans in Business, Fitness, Sport and the wider community. F RANCHIS I NG Did you know 1 in 7 military service leavers enter the world of franchising and business? Here we provide three steps to get into this sector… Step One - Ask yourself, “can I afford to buy a franchise?” Be honest with yourself and see how much realistically you can invest into a franchise. Do not overstretch your finances and remove franchises that are outside of your budget. Step Two - What do you need to earn? Make a list of all of your outgoings and add 25% on top of this. The additional 25% allows for any unforeseen costs and gives flexibility. Take out all franchises that will be unable to meet your costs of living. Step Three - Can I do it? Franchise agreements normally last for 5 years, so search inside and ask yourself, is it something I can see myself doing over this time. Take out any franchises on your list that don’t fit this criteria.

FROM COMMISSIONED OFFICER TO OUTSTANDING HOMECARE BUSINESS OWNER “Right at Home offers a lot of support, which allowed me to be my own boss and follow my passion. By offering local jobs, community engagement, and the best in quality care, we really have made a difference to my local community. “I’m really proud of the business I’ve built. Highlights have included getting an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission, winning a Service Leaver Franchisee of the Year award and reaching the finals of the bfa Franchisee of the Year Award – but the real icing on the cake is seeing the impact that great quality care has on the lives of our clients and their families.” Andrew Davis, owner, Right at Home Bournemouth & Poole Ex-British Army, veteran of tours in the Balkans and Iraq

ED U CATIO N Did you know? The UK Education Advisory Team (UK EAT) – formerly CEAS gives advice, information and support on all aspects of your child’s education, including boarding school. It holds the Accredited Schools Database (ASD), a list of schools for which CEA is admissible. To claim this allowance, the school you choose must be on this list. This database now includes more detail about the schools, including latest inspection reports, boarding capacity, fees and discounts to Service families in receipt of CEA. Families can also use filters to identify suitable schools. The information provided is for guidance only and all Service personnel should verify the details with the school prior to accepting a boarding offer. You can request access to the database by emailing RC-DCS-HQ-EAT@mod.gov.uk Source: The Army Families Federation (AFF) aff.org.uk Please see a selection below of boarding and independent schools in the UK offering services discounted rates.
