WE Adopt a Pet Crystal is a beautiful 2 year old Pit Bull Terrier brought to the shelter by the Sheriff’s Department due to neglect. Crystal is very calm, sweet, and loving to people, but not with other dogs. She would love a fenced yard to safely run and play. Crystal has been at the shelter over a year and is becoming depressed. Please save Crystal and give her the loving home she deserves.

Kimberlee Dannette Thomas is a Chandler, Oklahoma native. She relocated to Jackson County in 1986.

She has five children, five grandchildren, is co-owner, creator, and ad builder for Water’s Edge and Eye On Magazine.

She is recognized from her years of cohosting Cable Channel programming in Jackson and Independence County. She earned her Associates from ASUN in Fine Arts.

WE see you The Heber Springs Fire Department received a grant for nearly $50,000 towards the purchase of a new rescue vehicle in mid June. The Fire Department applied through the USDA rural development community facility program, which resulted in covering approximately 1/3 of the total $148,000 purchase price. Rescue 1’s main mission is to carry specialized equipment used for vehicle extrication, technical rope rescue, dive and swift water rescue, heavy lifting and fire ground support. HSFD would like to thank Tammy Moser with USDA for all her professional assistance during this process.

The old rescue will be transferred to the police department and used by their SWAT team.

Water’s Edge - Where did you go to grow up? Go to school?

Brandon Bell - I was born and raised in Heber Springs. I went to Heber Springs public schools from Kindergarten until graduation in 2000. Following high school, I attended the University of Central Arkansas on a music scholarship. After the first semester, it was pretty clear it wasn’t the right fit for me, and I started looking for other options to study music production. In 2001, I was accepted to Middle Tennessee State University and moved to Murfreesboro, TN. In 2004, I graduated with a degree in Recording Industry with an emphasis 2022 Grammy, Photographer Erin Bell.

Water’s Edge - Tell us about your family.

Brandon Bell - My paternal grandparents, the Bells, moved to Heber Springs in the 1970s and bought Red River Honda. They managed it for 30 years before selling it to my Dad and Aunt Jill. My maternal grandparents, the Redwines, also moved to Heber Springs in the ‘70s. My grandfather was a welder and took a job with JC May’s tree transplanting business. My mom graduated from Heber Springs High School, and my dad moved to Heber Springs after graduating from high school in Michigan.

I also have to know how to put a song together. I’m the person that helps the producer or artist find the sonic vibe or soundscape they are after for a song or album. Occasionally I get asked to work on music for films or remix live shows. Those projects often require a different kind of problem solving which can be a lot of fun.

I work in 2 different phases of making records. Tracking - is where the artist and producer record all the separate instruments and parts of a song.

Mixing - is when the engineer balances all the elements and rides the volume of individual instruments so that the song moves and

I have 2 step-brothers in central and northwest Arkansas. Like me, my wife graduated from Heber Springs High School. She moved to Nashville in 2001 to pursue a master’s degree in education from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. We have been married since 2003 and have a 14 year old daughter.

Water’s Edge - Tell us what you do being a sound engineer.

Brandon Bell - Engineering music is both an art and a science. I’m the person that knows what all those knobs and buttons do! It’s also my job to know what all the microphones and gear sound like. Always trying to fit the right 8 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine

hopefully the listener feels what the artist is singing about.

Recording music is an intensely collaborative process. A big part of my job is to make space for the artist or band to explore or experiment in a shared space, and then capture the magic that comes from it. If I’ve done my job well, you hear the music -not the effects and the edits, just the music - and it makes you feel something.

Water’s Edge - How did you become interested and get started in your profession?

Brandon Bell - I’ve always loved playing and creating music. My parents were very supportive of this and let me explore different instruments. I started playing guitar at age 9 then clarinet in the 5th grade band. I took piano lessons for 5 or 6 years, then started playing the drums. When I was in 9th grade I switched from clarinet to percussion in the school band.

From the beginning my mom and dad have always been my biggest fans. They endured a lot of squeaks and interesting noises in those early years, but they always encouraged me (sometimes with great effort) to practice and stick with it.

In high school, I began to explore music in a new way with my best friend, Jordan Trotter.

We started out recording ourselves with 2 cassette decks. We soon upgraded to a 4 track recorder so that we could layer multiple instruments to a cassette tape. We were essentially building a band with just the two of us. He’d play drums and I’d play bass.

We both played guitars and sometimes keys as well.

Looking back, that’s when my obsession for recording music started.

I got my first job in the recording industry in 2001. My uncle, Keith Lynch, was the chief engineer at Family life, a syndicated radio program that recorded and edited all of their content in Little Rock. He hired me to work part time, editing mostly

Brandon Bell - Personally, 20 years ago I never would have dreamed of working with the artists and musicians that I have! It’s hard to process the fact that I have worked with Paul McCartney, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, the Foo Fighters and so many more over the past 20 years. I’m honored to get to work with and learn from some of the best engineers and producers in the industry.

Most of my closest friends are local musicians or fellow engineers. I’m really proud to be a part of the Nashville music community. One of the greatest compliments for an engineer is to get to a 2nd or 3rd record with an artist.

As far as critical accomplishments, Gary and I received a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical in 2006 for our work on Alan Jackson’s Like Red on a Rose and again in 2010 for Sarah Jarosz’s album, Follow Me Down. While we didn’t win them, it truly was such an honor to even be nominated. To have an album that I worked on considered one of the top 5 for engineering in 2 different years is still surreal! In 2012 I received a Grammy award for my work on the Steep Canyon Rangers album, Nobody Knows You, which won Best Bluegrass Album.

Professionally, this year has been unlike any other. Brandi Carlile’s “Right on Time” received a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. As a songwriter and musician, she is on a whole other level. Another record I’m particularly proud of is “The Marfa Tapes” because it’s so different from anything I’ve ever recorded before - it’s very raw and kind of wild in its own way. “The Marfa Tapes” received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album. In February, The Water’s Edge - What are some of your proudest Academy of Country Music nominated me for dialogue and some music. I was learning to use Pro Tools for the first time. It was fairly new recording software at the time, but I still use it almost everyday. This job was an important step for me because I found that I really enjoyed that kind of work and wanted to be in a studio full time. That’s about the time that I enrolled in MTSU’s RIM program to pursue a career in the music industry.

My real start in recording music came while I was still at MTSU. I started out interning for Gary Paczosa, who I knew to be an exceptional engineer from his work on records with Alison Kraus & Union Station, along with many of the best bluegrass and Americana artists. I worked as his assistant engineer before becoming an independent engineer in 2011. We still work together occasionally. If he’s involved,I know it’s going to be great.

I was an independent engineer until 2014 when I was hired as the studio manager and chief engineer for Southern Ground Nashville, Zac Brown’s studio in downtown Nashville. I was fortunate to have some of the best co-workers at SGN. We recorded some exciting new artists, such as: Sam Lewis, Adam Chaffins, and Brit Taylor. If you’ve not heard them yet, definitely check them out.

Currently I am an independent engineer working mostly out of a studio in East Nashville, “The Cabin Studio”, with my good friend Matty Alger. I also do a lot of work at RCA Studio A with Dave Cobb. Jon Randall Stewart is another great producer that I work with a lot. There is so much talent here - Nashville is called Music City for good reason! moments? Accomplishments?

Audio Engineer of the Year. When I saw my name alongside some of Country Music’s best engineers, like Jim Cooley who actually won, I was overwhelmed. It’s a funny thing to hope to win while you’re actively rooting for your friends to win!

I sometimes have to pinch myself to reassure myself that these things really happened! In so many ways I’m still that same kid from Heber Springs, experimenting with music to see what’s possible. When you can turn what you love to do into a career, to get to do that thing for a living, it doesn’t get much better!

Water’s Edge - What are your future Goals?

Brandon Bell - I guess it would be to keep learning and not be afraid to keep trying new things. Engineering music is a hard job, but it’s very rewarding. I enjoy the process of transforming music from the client’s imagination into something real that they can share with others. It’s never boring; each project is unique, and the job is always changing. I’m always pushing myself to be a better engineer and record producer. It’s fun because I’m still learning something new on every project.

I come from a long line of creative folks who thrived on making something from scratch.

Whether it’s building up a local business, raising a family, restoring a vintage car, or creating an airplane from spare parts, happiness often comes as much from the process as the product.

That’s what recording music is for me. My job gives me the opportunity to tinker with sound and create great music. With a little luck, I hope to be recording and mixing records for many years to come. A best engineer Grammy wouldn’t be so bad either :-)

Holland Wall will be a 5th grader next year. She was selected to do voice overs at PBS. To boost summer learning for K-5 students, Arkansas PBS produces a morning program in the summer called “Rise and Shine.” Holland was chosen to voice the character based on Randi House, a kindergarten teacher at Theodore Jones Elementary School in the Conway School District, and 2018 Arkansas Teacher Of The Year. Holland was beyond excited to be given this opportunity. She hopes to be able to work with Arkansas PBS again in the future ESPECIALLY since they support her first love - education.

WE see you Cleburne County Community Foundation awards $17,000 in Grants to Local Nonprofits.

Cleburne County Community Foundation, an affiliate of Arkansas Community Foundation has awarded $17,000 to twelve area nonprofits through their Giving Tree grantmaking program. The grants were presented at the Heber Springs Chamber of Commerce Banquet that took place on May 12.

“Funding for these grants comes from Cleburne County families and individuals who have set up unrestricted endowments to benefit our local nonprofits,” said Susan Vowels, executive director of Cleburne County Community Foundation. “Each year any nonprofit with the 501(c)3 status can apply for our Giving Tree grants from Jan 10-Feb 15. Our local board of directors determines how we can effectively and efficiently use the funds to benefit local area nonprofits.”

The 2022 grant recipients include: Heber Springs Elementary, Quitman Elementary, Westside Greers Ferry Elementary, Heber Springs HIPPY, Breakin’ Bread, NLC Outreach, Heber Springs Humane Society, Fight Like a Kid, Single Parent Scholarship, YoungLife, The CALL, and the Heber Christian School.

Since 2004, Cleburne County Community Foundation has awarded over 250 grants, totaling over $680,000 through our annual Giving Tree program.

Home Town Heroes Deputy Sarah Burger , Tell us a little bit about your family.

My name is Sarah Burger. I am happily married with 5 children ranging from 3 years old to 20 years old. I was raised in Heber Springs AR and attended school in Heber Springs. I was raised in a very conservative home as my Father pastored a small home missions church in Concord AR in Cleburne County with my mother by his side until he passed in 2021 due to COVID complications. I was raised and taught throughout my life to reach out and help people and always have an open mind and to be understanding. I became a Deputy Sheriff in 2011.

be. Yes the excitement does happen in this job but it is also one of the most difficult, emotional rollercoasters of my life daily. I’ve shed many tears in this job and laughed with many throughout the years. The good of people outweighs the bad.

I took the Oath To Save lives, To make our community a safer place and to help others make better life choices. I am Blessed being a Cleburne County Deputy Sheriff in my hometown!

What is your favorite part about being a deputy for Cleburne County?

My favorite part of being a Deputy Sheriff is community policing and seeing the smiles on the faces in the Community I live in and am raising my children in. Whether it’s in a small town parade or in one of the worst situations of someone’s life young or old, letting my fellow citizens know they are not alone and giving them my support brings peace to my heart daily.

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is “Do the right thing”. I live by this quote in my daily life and have counseling sessions with individuals daily good and bad. I have people ask me regularly if I like being a Deputy and how exciting it would

I have a wife, Savanah, and an eight month old, Emberly.

Savanah is a travel nurse and Emberly is a baby. *chuckle* We have three dogs, a golden, a lab mix, and an Australian cattle dog.

Who is your hero in life?

Someone I look up to is another paramedic named Micah.

He mentored me and got me through paramedic school. He helped me out quite a bit. He was just a great guy and friend through all of that. And still is.

What do you find most rewarding about being a paramedic?

You get to help people and actually see a difference right away. Like if you have a patient and you get to help them, then you get to see, hopefully and improvement towards the end. Getting to put a smile a hurt face is rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a paramedic?

It’s hard, but it’s worth it. It’s a rewarding job. Always keep learning. Don’t have the attitude that you know it all,

I am taller than the sky, stronger than my body, greater than the sum of my parts.

I feel unique and right and whole, reaching further than my arms and legs allow. I appear subjective, depending on who you ask, but I see potential to become everything.
