WE Adopt a Pet Gorgeous Gladys is a 1 ½ year old domestic long-haired cat that was brought to the shelter as a stray. Patiently waiting to be adopted, she prefers to be the only animal with adults. She is an inside lounging cat that enjoys people talking to her with a nice soft voice, but never wants to be touched or rubbed. Gladys’ adoption fee is $60.00 which includes first shots, worming, and sterilization. Lanny, a beautiful 2 year old Hound/Pit mix brought to the shelter because her owner could not care for her. Lanny is an active gal that enjoys plenty of exercise and would love to go on adventures with her special person. She loves to play and craves love and attention. She would also make a wonderful cuddle companion. Lanny gets along with other dogs and misses home life.

She is recognized from her years of cohosting Cable Channel programming in Jackson and Independence County. She earned her Associates from ASUN in Fine Arts.

Where did you grow up?

I am originally from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, I then married and we moved to California and then back to Arkansas.

Family: Marvin husband of 60 years. Lisa of Bristol VA and Teri of Willerzell , Switzerland. Three grandchildren.

Rulers of the home, Smoky, Miss Kitty and Charlie.

Hobbies: Hobby is reading. I can’t go into a bookstore as I will add to my haven’t read library.

Community Activities: Past President of Seven Springs Extension Homemakers Club. Helped with fundraisers for Humane Society.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of the Heber Springs Community?

The people. We traveled to many towns looking for the right place to retire . The downtown merchants made us feel welcome. After the first visit, they would greet us and seemed excited about our continuing house hunt. Made us want to stay. Since then we have made wonderful friends and feel that if any help is needed we just need to ask.

What is something people don’t know about you?

People do not know that I’m a Razorback fan and that if a game is televised I want to watch. It doesn’t matter which sport.

I want to add that I am enjoying the Water’s Edge magazine.

It’s a beautiful display of the town and people of Heber Springs. There is coverage of the library, the schools, people, clubs, events and what I like most is the “Adopt a Pet”. Photography is beautiful.

During the fall of 1986, with the support of the Ministerial Alliance, the Cleburne County Department of Human Services and interested local citizens, Cleburne County Cares, Inc. opened it's doors and Bergman operations. It is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with no paid staff, operating with the help of volunteers only.

In 2021, the organization distributed an impressive 186,609 pounds of food to 4,359 individuals in 1,603 households. During the worst of the Pandemic, CCC offered help to the very needy.

Programs and Assistance CCC Provides: HOMELESS PREVENTION This program helps clients stay in their homes and actually helps families stay together. Services may include rent and mortgage assistance, help with utilities, and help with transportation costs to medical or job sites to help keep their jobs.

FOOD PANTRY The food is purchased from Arkansas Food Bank local vendors, and through donations.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Provides up to $1500 per semester to qualified Cleburne County residents for vocational / technical training.

CCC MISSION STATEMENT Hunger, homelessness, and lack of education rob people of their dignity, health, and hope for the future. Sudden loss of income, illness or injury, and inadequate education are significant factors in the causes of these human crises. Providing food, shelter, clothing, medicines, and educational opportunities for those in crises will help maintain their dignity and hope for the future.

Cleburne County Cares (CCC) exists to alleviate these human crises, improving the quality of life for the people of Cleburne County, Arkansas.

The CCC Mission is to provide a central place to respond to human crises through cooperation and coordination of caring persons and community organizations. We Have continued to identify and add programs through the years as they were needed.

Programs and assistance are offered to residents of Cleburne County, Arkansas.

On Wednesday April 20th the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service visited the Heber Springs High School campus. They met with the Junior class and presented the GET REAL program.

This is a hands-on simulation where students are able to: Practice future financial decision making, increase personal finance knowledge, learn skills in check writing, debit card use and online banking. They were shown the importance of balancing a transaction register, budget management, understanding the difference of gross and net income and the impact of education on career options, as well as impact of occupation and family matters on lifestyle.

Students were provided a checkbook register indicating their family dynamics and then an employment card stating their occupation, gross annual income, and monthly income. Students were then asked to total up the amount of deductions from their family dynamic withholdings to find their monthly net income.

The Panther Den was set up with three different stations where groups of students would decide on what was needed for their family: The amount of food needed a month, internet, purchasing a vehicle, phone bill, cable bill, childcare, education, insurance and renting vs. buying a home.

Students had to remember their monthly net income and budget for their family wisely.

And as an extra bonus the students participated in a bit of yoga to relax after making all those big decisions.

Heber Springs Public Schools would like to thank the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service for coming out to Heber Springs Schools, the many volunteers who came out to help with each station, and to the Juniors who stayed for the program.

What a wonderful eye-opening experience for these young people as they edge ever closer to adulthood.

Juniors from Heber Springs High School took the opportunity on April 19th to learn more about ASU Beebe’s one-of-a-kind majors.

The students met with faculty from the Pharmacy Technician, Agriculture, Veterinary Technology, and John Deere programs and learned about other majors that will teach the skills needed to start a rewarding career or prepare for transfer to over 120+ majors at a 4-year university.

Home Town Heroes Tell us a little bit about your family.

I grew up in the Concord and Floral area. My family has lived in the area since I was a baby. We all still live in the area too. My mom is an RN at Arkansas Childrens and my dads been a mason his whole life. My fiancé and I are expecting our baby girl named Stella in June. I’m also the first EMS worker in my family.

The tedious tasks that are required for the job. To me those are the most challenging.

What made you decide to serve your community?

I’ve always had the desire to help. It started with volunteering in the fire service…I would call myself an adrenaline junkie. *chuckle* I grew a love for emergency response. Every scene is different…you never know what you’re going to get. And I just love Cleburne County.

What do you find most rewarding about being an EMT? Working for Heber Fire and Survival Flight, I have found a work family. It wasn’t my planned career, but I’m glad that I did find it. I greatly value getting along and having a family where I work and being able to get along with everybody. I feel everyone is connected and there’s a lot of shared communion between coworkers, it’s not just another job.

What do you find most challenging about your

Tell us a little bit about your family.

My wife and I have been married for almost 10 years.

She is a 6th grade teacher, and we have two daughters— Lexi (7) and Lanie (5) What made you decide to serve the city of Heber Springs?

I grew up in this community - this is where my roots are. I want to help serve in the city that means a lot to me and family.

What do you find most rewarding about the job?

Being able to help others is the most rewarding part.

Fighting fires is one way of helping, but there is a lot more that we do as well. It’s a good feeling knowing we were able to help someone when they need it.

Who is your hero in life?

My heroes are my parents. They taught me the value of working hard to achieve goals. I hope I can pass on some of those life lessons to my own children.

Notes from the Clearing Joey Thomas

Even as the sky was clearing, the rain inside the man’s head poured, ever so loudly. He wasn’t haunted by the usual suspect voices that we all learn to appease, or get driven mad by. His was a billion little drops over a lifetime of breathing. He didn’t know what his purpose was or why he had to question it. He didn’t know how to do this, this living thing with any real sense of happiness.

Was it chemical? Could it be helped with pills? Was that honestly his only solution, and was that better than the alternative? He didn’t know where to turn or what to do, until one day he met Laura.

He didn’t know her, or where she came from when she walked up out of nowhere. He was trying to quiet the dripping depression when she was just there, behind him on his park bench. The wind blew and she spoke, as if she knew him, as if she knew his thoughts; reading them like she was forseeing the oncoming clear day. She said, “You know, all you have to do is, to do for you.”

He looked at her with wild curiousity and her knowing eyes seemed overwhelming, so he turned back to the ground. The next thought was clear and precise, ‘I need 20 Heber Spring’s Social and Community Magazine

to make myself healthy, then happy will follow. Healthy boundries with people and things, healthy food for medicine, and exercise until happiness rides me home.’

When he turned to ask her, to thank her, to discover how she knew and who she was; she was gone.

He looked around to find no trace of her in the open field of the park, the empty sidewalk that led to and around it. He stood mistified and chills covered his body.

He was scared of the answer, that it might work, but he was exhilarated too. His only lingering question was, where did it come from, where did she come from and who was she if she wasn’t flesh and blood? Couldn’t have been, unless she could communicate telepathically, and was that really a thing?

The wind seemed to buffet him in waves, quick burst, that he couldn’t help but read as Morse Code, though he didn’t know it. It felt reassuring, however, as if now he had all he needed and the universe knew it; was happy for him. Then the sparrow, a baby sparrow from the look of it, landed on his shoulder. He was certain that this was its first flight, though he had no reason to assume so.

He knew it though, and all he could do was watch from the corner of his eyes as the fledgling eyed the world from its fleshy perch. He relaxed and watched the world before them and just as he felt a building anticipation, a growing pride, the tiny bird pushed off his chip heavy shoulder and the release was the beginning.
