Shock at death of local priest By Margaret Gallagher

A huge crowd of mourners attended the funeral Mass of Fr Seamus Gallagher in St Mary’s Church, Frosses on Monday and later St. Naul’s Cemetery where he was laid to rest. On Friday evening his remains arrived at St. Crona’s Church, Dungloe for Mass at 7.30pm and reposed over night. On Saturday his funeral cortege was piped by a lone piper over the Gweebarra Bridge as he left the Rosses for the last time and returned to Frosses where his remains reposed in the Parochial House on Saturday evening and all day Sunday. Ordained in 1985, Fr Seamus originally from Dungloe where his parents Susie (formerly Meehan from Drimalost)and his father John Híudaí Dan, Dungloe had a grocery shop on the Main Street. They had seven children: Mary Catherine, Hugh, Seamus, Anne, Edel, Regina and Sean. Fr Seamus was the third eldest, born in May 1961. Seamus was a frequent visitor to Drimarone in his childhood and stayed with grandparents Jimmy and Nan Meehan in Drimalost where faith, prayers and music were very much to the fore. When Fr Seamus came to Frosses as Parish Priest in 2013 after the sad passing of Fr John McLoone the parishioners were delighted again to have ‘one of their own’ as PP in the Parish of Inver.

Fr Seamus served in many parishes throughout the Diocese of Raphoe and no matter where he went he was well received. He Affordable had a special gift-ofFriendly making people feel at ease, especially during First Holy Communion and Confirmation preparations and with brides and grooms who were nervous about the nuptials. The popular priest was known to burst into song to calm the situation when there were anxious moments. Fr Seamus was a sacred priest with a special devotion to the healing of the sick with a good ‘office’ administered at many a sick bed. He was a brilliant musician, a talented tin whistle and flute player and a man who loved Irish traditional music. Fr Seamus was a tremendous priest and a great character and will be sadly missed by his family, neighbours, parishioners, his brother priests and so many across Donegal and further afield. May he rest in peace.

Great News for The Bank Walk …continued from front page The aim of the allocated funding is to continue to protect the area known locally as the Bank Walk in Donegal Town by taking a variety of measures which will be beneficial to this beautiful established riverside area and will also guarantee the continuation of all of the natural species which already make this area their habitat and also encourage new wildlife e.g. Birds, Squirrels, Bats, Bees, etc. One of the distinct strands to be included

is to erect interpretive signage that will inform and involve walkers in the local area. The signs will also boost people’s knowledge of water quality and biodiversity in the River Eske and Donegal Bay as well as encouraging wildlife into the area through installation of wildlife boxes. The closing date for applications to relocate Donegal Town Post Office was last Friday. Angus Laverty from An Post told The Eye that they were happy with the response and have received a number of applications from retail partners. “We are happy with the response and will process all the applications received which will go to a

selection board and we will have a decision late December or early January.” The new contract for the post office is open to all retail partners with a proven retail and business development skill and suitable premises. The existing post office building will become a complete mail sorting office for the area.

Community Garden

Up behind the Old Tech the Donegal Community Garden meet every Thursday from March to October. Here they grow their own fruit and vegetables and have a social cup of tea where everyone is welcome to drop in. Last year the garden produced tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, onions, cabbage, potatoes and cucumbers all organically grown by the group with help from horticulturist and landscaper Marcus Flannery. The members learned all that is needed to grow vegetables and fruit in their own gardens and a lot of useful tips along the way. A few workshops were held where the growers cooked their fresh vegetables from the garden and how rewarding this proved to be. Over the summer the group also went on a day trip to Oakfield Gardens and Lissadell House. The group told The Eye that the Community Garden will be kicking off again next March and anybody interested can call Marcus on 087Â 4103204.

Fr Seamus Gallagher - An Appreciation

Colm Kelly Last Thursday afternoon when I heard in what was going on around the area and the news that Fr. Seamus Gallagher, our always was very welcoming to visitors to Parish Priest had died my thoughts went the village. For a man that had lived in into overdrive. You question the truth of it, Frosses for just over five years he has left hopefully someone got a statement wrong, an everlasting impression on us all and I’m or how can this happen to such a good sure for future generations to come. Seamus never forgot his birthplace person at such a young age. I sat down to consider my thoughts. We though and shortly after he came to had been to St. Eunan’s College together Frosses he had a finger pointing sign up at over forty five years ago and had kept in the back gate to the parochial house with touch over the years, finding out about the “The Rosses” on it. He loved his music and was able to play new places where Seamus was stationed. He was always excited about a new move many instruments, the great thing was but had always made many friends where you didn’t have to force him to play - he he had been so there was always an air of loved to play. He took part in many great music sessions and would always throw in sadness on a move to a new parish. He had a special Grá for the Parish of some wonderful stories. Successful fundraising event for Cancer Research DONEGAL CYCLE FOR CANCER RESEARCH 2018 - 25th August 2018

In glorious sunshine on Saturday 25th August over 50 cyclists took off from Carrick on a 100k cycle via Malinmore, Glencolmcille, Glengesh, Ardara, Frosses, Killybegs, Kilcar and back to Carrick. The event was organised by The Kelly Group and Tir Chonaill Gaels GAA Club in London and many cyclists travelled from London for the cycle. Refreshments were provided along the way by Corner House, Ardara; Mohan’s Bar, Frosses; The Blue Haven, Kilcar and Cooks Pantry at the Slieve League Lodge. This is the most recent of a number of fundraising events for Cancer Research since the death in 2014 of Brid Carr

(Glencolmcille and London) from Ovarian Cancer. Before her death it was her request that friends and family would do some fundraising for Ovarian Cancer Research and to make other women more aware of the signs and symptoms (which are quite silent until too late) of this disease. Ovarian cancer is one of the poor prognosis cancers with less than a 20% survival rate and the unfortunate fact is that this has not improved in the last 20 years. This is due to the lack of funding for research. Since Brid’s death her family and friends from Donegal and London have organised a number of awareness and fundraising events and their donations to Breakthrough Cancer

Research has reached over €25,000. The total raised so far from the Donegal Cycle, Auction and Raffle in August is €9,700. The Organising Committee wish to thank most sincerely everyone who supported any or all of our fundraising events, volunteered or donated online over the last few years. Petre Novacovici opened his new barber shop on Main Street last Friday and has been very busy since. Called Peter’s Barber Shop it is open six days a week - Monday and Tuesday 10 - 6pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9 - 6pm, Friday 9 - 7pm, Saturday 9 - 6pm. Petre told The Eye that he has had a great mix of customers since he started and he caters for the young and old with regular hair cuts, the Skin Fade, Fade, children’s hair cuts and he also does beard trims. Petre who is from Romania is very happy in Donegal and looks forward to meeting all his new customers.

“King of Tory” Dies

Patsy Dan Rodgers, better known as the “King of Tory Island”, has died aged 74. He is survived by his wife Caitlin and their four children. Born in 1944 in Dublin, he was adopted aged 4 by a family living on Tory Island off the north Donegal coast. Patsy Dan’s love of and devotion to the island, its culture and history was clear through his many campaigns over the years for better services and support for the island. In his youth on the island, the famous artist Derek Hill stayed on Tory many times and Patsy Dan, as well as many other islanders, learned to paint and the Tory Island School of Primitive Art was founded. Patsy Dan's art has been exhibited both in Ireland and internationally and his last exhibition which celebrated his 50th year as an artist was held earlier this year. When the last King of Tory, Padraig Óg Rodgers, died in the 1990s, Patsy Dan was asked by Padraig’s children to accept the honour of their father and become King. Among the campaigns waged by Patsy Dan were the fight to prevent plans to relocate islanders to the mainland in the 1970s and 1980s; he also fought for better transport links to Tory and for development to grow employment and tourism on the island.

The Active Schools banner was launched last Friday in the Abbey Vocational School. It is a project run by Mrs O’Mahony and Active Schools Flag staff committee who include Mr Monaghan, Mr O’Donnell, Ms Rooney and the class 4C to help get students on their feet and more active. Partnerships - our school has always valued the student voice. Behind the “Old Tech”, Donegal ETB’s Learning for Living programme is currently running a QQI Level 3 course in Horticulture. The course started in April 2018 with little to work with by way of a garden, but the class soon got to work and the garden is now transformed into a hive of activity. The course is a major award in Employability Skills. As well as covering Outdoor Vegetable Crop Production, Planting & Potting by Hand and Plant Propagation, it covers Internet Skills, Functional Maths, Communications and Career Preparation (looking at horticulture as a possible employment option). It is a part-time course which runs one day a week from 9.30am-4pm, working both in the garden and in the classroom. The course is aimed at adults who have less than a Leaving Certificate level of education and is free of charge. The class organised Tea in the Tunnel and invited people to visit the garden, browse the beds and talk to the participants. A local man Phonsie Canning bought a 16mm projector and a little petrol driven van supplied the motive power for the whole operation. The films were hired from a company in Middle Abbey Street, Dublin. They arrived in a large square hard leather box and it was always important to be present at the bus for its arrival. We would peer to see the name of the film we were about to escape into the delights of and when we might see printed on the case that Roy Rogers or Gene Autrey was about to visit we would run bare footedly whooping to let everyone know of the delights that were in store on Friday evening. In times like these some of us children would head off to local houses and borrow chairs. Names of the chairs’ owners were written underneath the seat with chalk and we were responsible to return them the next day. I gained free admission to a film by providing live entertainment before the film show. I had three songs “Little Brown Jug”, Brahm’s “Lullaby” and “Dear Old Donegal”, the last song being delivered with some gusto and the odd ‘Boo’ from some well hidden member of my peers in the audience. Later in life I was to discover that my singing constituted a live performance and there was a consequential tax relief for the cinema operator.

Roy Rogers, Gene Autrey and Hopalong Cassidy were our heroes and their steeds were known to us personally - ‘Trigger’, ‘Champion’ and ‘Topper’ – these were the good guys, lightning fast on the draw. Men who arrived at small western towns who might be completely downtrodden by one big criminal landowner or a bullying gunfighter who had all of the people living in fear. Invariably good prevailed under the guidance of one of these great men. The bad men would be overthrown and humiliated and run out of town. Our hero would then head off into the west and leave a grateful people and possibly a young local teacher with a broken heart. A contented happy sadness would come over us all as our hero rode off, strumming his guitar and singing ‘The Lonesome West’. We trudged home to bed, sad but satisfied in our happy little idyll. My singing talents, much to the embarrassment of my parents, were not always to be heard in the hall. These aforementioned arias were often used, at a price, to entertain holidaymakers. I would point out here that this was in direct competition to ‘Joe Brassbuttons’. I would approach a group of Scottish visitors, “Scotchies’ as we called them, and for the princely sum of one penny I would break into song. This turned into a nice little earner until one Fair Day in the middle of a performance I spotted the large frame of my father in his sergeant’s uniform bearing down on me. Without speaking he marched me in front of him down the street into the barracks, out the back door and into one of the two cells. He opened

the door, signalled me to enter, rattled the bolts, looked in a little observation window and pronounced “one half hour detention for you my man and if I catch you again it will be one hour”. Suitably chastened I sat on the wooden bed bemoaning the fact that a promising day’s work had been cut short. I still remember my eight years older brother, who was about fifteen years of age, crying to see myself being incarcerated. It mattered not a whit to myself. I would just have to be a little more circumspect in dealing with my entertainment. After a very short time daddy relented and as the bolts rattled I was again a free man. “If you need a penny that badly”, he said, “come to me and I will give it to you. I can’t have you begging on the street. One Joe Brassbuttons is enough in any town”. In all my childhood and until I became an adult that was the only time my father punished me. He spoke gently and I suppose the big stick he carried was his immense size which was enough for all in the village and any malign interlopers. He was half lovingly called the ‘Sheriff ’, a name which stayed with him long after he retired and lived to a great age of ninety four. Continued next week…

The Mission ‘Bring and Buy’

I take this opportunity to thank each and every one who contributed or helped in any way to make the sale held in aid of the Missions in Frosses Hall on Sunday 14th October so successful.

This was the 43rd sale, the first sale was in Frosses N.S. on Mission Sunday 1976. I was then teaching in Frosses and felt that teaching Religion shouldn’t be all ‘theory’, and getting the pupils involved in the sale was a practical way of showing them the need to help others. In those days the ‘sellers’ were the senior pupils with help from some recent past pupils who had begun work in shops and offices. We also held a children’s sale in the school before Christmas. The ‘adult’ sale soon outgrew the school and I moved it to the Hall. When the media gives publicity to scandals in Church organizations, people point them out to me and query where the Sale money goes. None of it goes to charities who have paid workers (I may add I know that they do good and necessary work). The Sale firstly helps two locals, Sr. Brigid Kennedy R.N.D.M. who set up and runs a clinic in a remote area in Kenya, and Sr. Eileen Kenny’s Holy Cross Mission in Cape Town. The SMA Fathers from Dromantine, Co. Down have been involved from the early days – the late Fr. V. O’Neill when on Mission promotion visited the

There have been changes in the ‘social scene’ which have affected the sale over the years. When fundraising, one is now competing with many groups including Sporting Clubs. In the early days there was no women’s football so men and boys mostly attended matches. Women and girls were free to come and spend an afternoon in the Hall. Though this has changed people continue to support – many who never actually appear in the hall on the day contribute generously. Many of the same workers have helped over the years – I don’t want to name names as there are so many I fear I’d leave somebody out. Again sincere thanks to one and all. It was the Drumbar Celtic side that were winners in a match that could have gone to either side. Both sides progress in their competitions this weekend, Drumbar Celtic play in Drumbar against Donegal Town at 11am, while Drumbar United are on the road to Eany also kicking off at 11am. Best of luck to both sides. Our Seniors had no match fixture and have arranged for a practice game in Drumbar this Saturday at 2pm. Best of Luck to the Finn Harps Seniors Squad in the play-offs taking place in the coming weeks.

SUNDAY TEAM - The Sunday Team ran out comfortable winners in this local derby after a great performance at the Hospital Field. Donegal were in front early on when great work from Ronan McHugh and Peadar Mogan allowed David Graham to fire home from close range. St. Catherine’s were level on the twenty minute mark when Ryan Cunningham coolly slotted home from the spot after a Saints player was upended in the area. Donegal got their noses in front right on half time when McHugh flicked on a throw in for Graham to score. St Catherines were right in it up to this point but the game got away from them ten minutes into the second half when two quick goals, first from Joe McIntyre, and then Eoin Slevin, effectively ended the game as a contest. Slevin’s pinpoint accuracy from a free kick just outside the area was the highlight of the game. Peadar Mogan struck from the edge of the area to make it five before Timmy Gorrell got one back. A quick fire brace from David Graham finished the scoring, the first from the penalty spot, to

seal his hat-trick, with the second coming at the back post after a great ball in from Nathan Ward. Team performance from the visitors with Graham the Town’s standout performer. Next up is a trip to Monaghan to play Lighthouse F.C. in the F.A.I. Junior Cup. The game is in Monaghan this Sunday at 1.30pm. U12 - Donegal Town qualified for the semi final of the Cup with a victory over St. Catherines. In a tight game, things ended level at a goal apiece so the tie was settled on penalties. Donegal held out in the shootout to progress to the semi final where they will face Drumbar Celtic. The game takes place this Saturday in Drumbar at 11am. SOCCO-LOTTO - The last draw was held on Sunday, October 22nd. The winning sequence was 2,1,7,4,6,3,5. There was no jackpot winner. Congratulations to John Sinclair who won the draw prize of €50. Well done to Niamh Moohan who finished fourth at the All Ireland Schools Pentathlon final in Athlone last Saturday. Niamh competed against the top athletes from all over Ireland. She competed exceptionally well with personal best performances in 4 out of the 5 events. This result has now qualified her for the Irish Schools International team that will travel to Glasgow at the end of October. This weekend she will attend a training weekend in Tipperary in preparation for international duty. Niamh is the first student to represent the school at this high level in 15 years. Well done in this fantastic achievement and good luck in Glasgow. Thank you to Tir Chonaill AC who have put a lot of work into coaching our athletes to compete at this high level.

On arrival, the ladies were treated to a Champagne Reception and it was fantastic to see some new faces (and many long-standing members) at this special occasion. It was a night to celebrate a wonderful golfing year and during the course of the evening, the various team captains/vice captains received a small presentation in appreciation of their leadership and commitment to the club. Team players were lauded for their enthusiasm, focus and energy (not to mention a small degree of skill). The loyal supporters were thanked for their continued encouragement, for their presence at various matches and for their good wishes/text messages and cards. EYE on SPORT International Call-Up for Conor

3rd year student Conor Campbell has been called up to the U15’s Ireland International soccer squad. Conor started off playing football with Eany Celtic. He played for the Donegal Schoolboys County Team from 2014-2017. During his time playing for the County team, Conor attended trials in 2016 for the Ireland squad but didn't make the cut. Conor was then chosen to play for the U15 Finn Harps team by Coach Kevin McHugh, even though this was an age group above his own. Conor had an exceptional season with Finn Harps in the national league which caught the eye of the Ireland squad coaches. He was called up for trials for the second time and was picked to play for the Ireland U15 International squad this year. Conor will attend a training camp on the 27th and the 29th October and he will then play against Poland on the 14th and 16th November at Home Farm, Dublin. “Forwards win games, backs decide by how much” Donegal Town 2xv made the short trip to neighbours Ballyshannon on Saturday to play a well contested game in fine conditions at the Lakeside Centre. Donegal played some good territory in the opening minutes with plenty of ball carriers in the pack. Ballyshannon defended well under pressure, however following a number of penetrating runs Donegal Town out-half Victor Mitchell spread the ball wide for winger David Giblin to score in the corner, unconverted. Donegal forwards continued to dominate the battle retaining their own ball in scrums and Jason Conway pin point with the lineouts. Centre partnership of Alex Boyd and Gareth Marias were in fine form and caused untold confusion in the Ballyshannon defence. Once again Mitchell spread the ball following good work from the pack and Giblin got in for his second try, converted. Following a loose opposition lineout Patrick Forde made some serious ground well into the Ballyshannon 22, rounding a would-be tackler with a step that Simon Zebo would be proud of. Ball was recycled quickly and this time rather than spread it out to the pretty boys, Robert Hannafin picked at the base of the ruck and showed some great power to finish under pressure. Converted. Half Time score 0-19. The second half started as the first ended, once again the pack retaining possession

Ballyshannon then began to come into the game and contested the ruck well, securing a number of turnovers and playing some good rugby deep in Donegal territory. Following some indiscipline Ballyshannon were awarded a penalty try on the 65th minute 7-26. Donegal veterans Gary Brogan and Kevin McGinty used all their experience to settle Donegal and regain control of the game. Donegal once again retained possession well sucking in the Ballyshannon defence before spreading to the backs, this time John Harkin on the opposite wing touching down in the corner following a good offload from Alex Boyd, unconverted. Donegal continued to dominate for the remainder of the game with John Harkin picking up a kick inside his own half and beating 4 Ballyshannon defenders before touching down under the posts. Harkin showing the kind of pace not seen in a red jersey since Eddie Gallagher was in his prime!
