12 acts to compete as Aodh Ruadh GAA club and Ballyshannon Musical Society team up for Lip Sync. By Geraldine Rodgers Aodh Ruadh GAA club and Ballyshannon Musical Society are teaming up to stage a Lip Sync battle in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran on Friday, October 12. On the night performers will be doing their best to wow the judges and the audience with their moves as they bid to be crowned Lip Sync champions. There will be 12 acts in total taking part with some big local personalities revealing hitherto hidden talents. The performers will be performing pieces running the spectrum from Tina Turner to The Spice Girls, Abba, Michael Jackson and Bucks Fizz. The acts have been working hard at rehearsals at the Sandhouse Hotel and the Breezy Centre over the past two weeks and are really coming together as can be seen from the footage on facebook of some of them going through their paces for Aodh Ruadh and Ballyshannon Musical Society.

Work progressing on Donegal Parish Church Spire Works to repair Donegal Town's tallest structure - the spire of the Church of Ireland parish church - are nearing completion. The team supervising the project recently paid a visit to inspect the work and were duly impressed with the quality of the pointing, stone work and lead work as well as repairs to the windows, louvres and other fittings. A final phase of the project will begin soon, after which there will be a grand unveiling and re-dedication event: details to follow soon. The Rector of

Donate your Bikes‑4‑Africa during October for National Reuse Month
“October is National Reuse month and everyone is being encouraged to ‘reuse every day at home, at work, at play’” says Suzanne Bogan, Waste Awareness Officer with Donegal County Council. As part of Reuse Month, Donegal County Council is supporting Letterkenny Rotary Club and Bryson Recycling’s ‘Bikes 4 Africa’ campaign where people are being encouraged to donate their old bikes by leaving them at any Bryson Recycling Centre (locally in Laghey) during October. Adult bikes and bikes suitable for teenagers similar to those pictured are most suitable. Small children’s bikes are not sought as part of this campaign but can go for recycling at the recycling centres.

Donegal ICT/FinTech Working Group to Host Information Sessions for Parents and School Staff
Donegal ICT-FinTech Working Group delivering a recent information session. The Donegal ICT/FinTech Working Group invites parents, teachers, postprimary school Guidance Counsellors and Principals along to an upcoming information event to find out more about career, education and training opportunities for their children and students in the areas of ICT/FinTech in Donegal. The Donegal ICT/FinTech Working Group is comprised of many leading international employers based in the county including Pramerica, Optum, SITA, Randox, Gartan Technologies, ERNACT, and supported by Donegal Education Training Board (ETB) and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT). A recent report published by the North West Regional Skills Forum identified the ICT/FinTech sectors amongst the fastest growing in the region with significant numbers of new high tech jobs being created

The companies will highlight the career opportunities in IT, finance, business, marketing, engineering, law, design and sciences. Do you want to adjust your clocks? The Department of Justice is to ask members of the public and interest groups whether or not Ireland should scrap the practice of Daylight Savings Time. The decision to set up the consultation process was signed off by Cabinet this week. The European Commission has recommended the abolition of the tradition of member states alternating between summertime and wintertime
every year. However, Mr Flanagan said the island of Ireland is unique in terms of having two jurisdictions and says the possibility of having two different time zones is not one he would welcome. The plan, which requires the approval of the European Council and the European Parliament, would mean the last mandatory change to summertime would take place on Sunday 31st March 2019.

Clinics for blood disorder in Donegal Plans to expand blood donation clinics for people with Haemochromatosis have been confirmed by the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. Known as the ‘Celtic Curse’ Haemochromatosis affects one in 83 people in Ireland and causes too much iron in the blood, which can have ultimately fatal consequences if not diagnosed. Increasing numbers of Donegal people are being diagnosed with the condition. Donegal, Derry and Tyrone are among locations in Ireland where the condition is most prevalent. In response to Deputy McConalogue submitting a parliamentary question this week the Minister for Health said that it is hoped that the mobile service will be expanded to other parts of the country.

Transition Year Art students from the Abbey Vocational School visited Glebe House and Gallery at Churchill recently to tour the home of renowned English painter and collector Derek Hill. While they were there the students took in an exhibition of work by Donegal born artist Rian Kerrane called Line of Enquiry. In her work Rian explores imagery from her past and her upbringing in Ireland in the 1970’s using objects that she uncovered in her parents’ attic. To round off the visit students got the opportunity to produce some selfies in clay and on the way home stopped for much needed refreshments in Letterkenny.

Anne Jane Thornton - The Female Sailor
…continued from Issue 32 The Sarah was bound for London, where it docked in February 1835. As Jim, she proved a great asset to the ship, cooking and also helping out on deck when needed, as the ship was sailing with an under-strength crew. She would run up the top gallant-sail in any sort of weather and it was a severe passage. She had a hard time of it, she suffered greatly, bore it all excellently and was a capital seaman. During the journey the crew had their suspicions about Thornton, for her having refused to drink grog. One member of the crew discovered her secret when she was washing and he caught sight of her bare breasts, threatening that unless she agreed to have sex with him, he would report her to the captain. Thornton refused and was reported to the master. This posed quite a problem for McIntyre for the ship was in the middle of the Atlantic, the weather was rugged and he needed every hand. So he told her to carry on as before. When the news of her story broke she became a great novelty, Londoners sympathised with her and she was offered £500 to appear on the stage, but she refused, stating that she wanted only to go home to her father. Thornton's story became even better known after she wrote an autobiographical book - “The Interesting Life and Wonderful Adventures of that Extraordinary Woman Anne Jane Thornton, The Female Sailor”. Thornton's story inspired the ballad The Female Sailor Bold. Copies of the ballad were sold as far away as the United States. In the archive of the Royal Museum at Greenwich
is a broadsheet entitled “The female sailor: a faithful history of the romantic and perilous adventures of that interesting young female Anne Jane Thornton”. It's a popularised account of a woman who ran away to sea to find her lost love - a sad story, but also a lovely example of the way such stories were told and sold by sensationalist street publishers. She also came to the attention of King William IV who granted her a pension of £10 a year. While he berated her for running away from her father, the Lord Mayor of London wrote to her father and made inquiries in Donegal. It was found that her father had himself emigrated to Canada aboard the brig Mayflower, although her sister still lived in Donegal and was glad to hear news of Anne Jane. The Lord Mayor booked Thornton a seat on the London to Liverpool coach, and she left for Ireland on 2nd April 1835. On the 13th of April 1835, a newspaper in Ballyshannon reported her arrival in Donegal. A vast crowd collected to see her, but the sailor hurried to the house of her sister, in the back lane. We were fortunate enough to have seen the young woman. She is now quite tired of the sea. She says she would not join a ship again for £500 a year as it is the most wretched life imaginable. She says she will never marry. On her return to Donegal, Andrew Murray gave her the use of a farm near Lough Eske, rent-free. In February 1836, Thornton married under unusual circumstances. One day a friend named Gallagher from Ballyshannon went to Donegal to visit her and found her being dragged to a clergyman by a group of men, who intended her to marry one of them. Her friend rescued her and they were married the next day. She gave birth to a son in November 1836. Anne again came to the attention of the press when the Enniskillen Impartial Reporter in 1841 reported under the heading:RESISTANCE TO COUNTY RATES On Friday last while Mr John Graham, Drumnagowan, was collecting the county cess (local tax) in Donegal town, a mob obstructed him and a scuffle ensued in which Mr Graham nearly lost his life. A person known by the name of the “female sailor” made a stab at him with a knife, which cut in through his waistcoat and halfway into his pocket book, which fortunately was in his inside breast pocket. DEATH OF A ROMANTIC CHARACTER In 1847 during the height of the famine the newspaper reported the funeral of Anne Jane Gallagher. On Monday the 3rd May, the remains of Jane Gallagher “the female sailor” were attended to the burial ground at the Abbey near Donegal town. She caught the fatal malady whilst attending on her husband who had been for a length of time confined with the disease which took her life. It may probably be within the recollection of most of our readers, that some years ago and during the time of his Majesty William IV she had been discovered on board a ship in London, disguised in the dress of a sailor boy, having at the time her apprenticeship nearly served. It was thought she went in pursuit of her lover, as she first immigrated to America, missed her design then went on board a ship as a boy. The novel circumstance excited so much wonder and amusement that it at once reached the Royal ear. She was introduced to his Royal Company with the assurance of his future protection and support. A pension was then granted her during life of £10 a year, which she enjoyed up to her death; she has left to mourn her premature demise a large family of very young Tars all of whom bear the names of her Royal mistress and present Queen’s children. It is anxiously hoped that the pension will be continued till they are able to appear in our Navy, in the dress in which their poor mother was discovered. During her peregrinations she has been frequently in company with ladies and gentlemen, has used snuff, smoked her pipe, drank punch, never was seen in the least intoxicated and was not discovered till in London. Ballad of the Female Sailor Bold It was to seek her lover that sailed across the main, Thro' love she did encounter storms, tempest, wind and rain. It was love caused all her troubles and hardships we are told; May she rest at home contented now the female sailor bold. NOTE: Victoria, Edward, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold and Beatrice were the names of the children of Queen Victoria. Is there a family of Gallaghers who can trace the family back to the Lough Eske area who have a tradition of any of the above names in their family?

Fine Gael councillor Barry O’Neill has announced that €200,000 has been secured for regeneration schemes in Donegal Town and Killybegs. “This is a phenomenal return on the applications to the Town and Village Renewal Scheme,” Councillor O’Neill said. “The idea of reviving the old railway for new tourism in Donegal Town is brilliant and getting €100,000 to help get the project off the ground is phenomenal. We wish all involved every success and a special word of thanks goes to Donna Maskery for her drive and ambition in the early stages of this project.” In Killybegs former councillor John Boyle said: “This €100,000 funding is badly needed to help enhance the streets of the town. The Government has invested heavily in Killybegs again this year with €6.5million already spent on the harbour and €4million more to come, and Minister McHugh has secured €3million for the tourism college. This is another win for the town.” Eleven schemes are being supported in total in Donegal under the enhanced and expanded Town and Village Renewal scheme through the Department of Rural and Community Development. Minister Joe McHugh said: “Exactly a week ago we had Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring in the county to show him just where the money was needed – we are delighted with the result. This is huge for our local communities. “This Government is delivering for communities. This money will make a massive difference to quality of life, for young people especially, revitalise communities, make them more welcoming places to live, work and socialise and sustain the unique vibrancy that you only get in our county.”

Major Maritime Centre Planned for Pier Area Donegal Bay Rowing Club and Gym is spearheading a planning application for a facility at the pier in Donegal Town together with a number of local water based clubs, local interest groups and with the support of local businessman, Seamus Quinn. The proposed new building, the Donegal Bay Maritime Centre, will cater not only for the local water based clubs actively using the pier but it has the potential to be a fantastic addition to the community infrastructure of the town and to the tourism industry. Donegal County Council has been very active in the development and support of the Marine Tourism industry in Donegal through Donegal Tourism and Malin Waters. Earlier this year the Council outlined an area at the pier for potential

future development for boating facilities in the County Development Plan published this year. DBRC Chairman Seamus Maguire spotted this and immediately set about developing a design proposal for a maritime facility at the pier that will cater for the clubs utilising the pier and also have the potential to be a signature building worthy of such a significant location in Donegal Town. Donegal Bay Rowing Club and Gym through its chairperson Seamus Maguire initially met with Seamus Quinn some years ago when the club was hosting the 2016 and 2017 All-Ireland. At that time Seamus Quinn provided much needed sponsorship and support for both events. It was obvious from these early meetings that Seamus had an interest in being involved in a project that would benefit the wider community. In more recent discussions Seamus Maguire presented his plans for a maritime facility at the pier. Thankfully due to Seamus Quinn’s generosity and philanthropic interests the plans will now become a reality with Seamus Quinn funding the planning application which will shortly be lodged with Donegal County Council. Paul Doherty Architects have skilfully modified the plans for the centre and have held pre-planning meetings with Donegal County Council planners where proposals were received positively. Donegal Bay Rowing Club and Gym is one of the largest coastal clubs in Ireland with over €100,000 worth of equipment including boats, trailers, oars, lifejackets and safety equipment. The club have successfully hosted two Coastal Championships back to back in 2016 and 2017 bringing over €2 million to the local economy. The hosting of the championships in Donegal would not

Commending the application Councillor John Campbell stated that the proposed development would greatly improve the use and storage of equipment and boats at the pier and that the overall design was very much in keeping with the landscape and respectful of the historic nature of its environment. Recently DBRC has partnered with Donegal Education and Training Board and The Abbey Vocational School in accessing a Sports Capital Grant worth €18,625 for non-personal gym equipment for the school gym which is now in use for training by both students and club members. Patrick Brady, a trained Rowing Ireland coach, has commenced coaching first year AVS students in their PE class as part of an 8 week intervention to introduce the sport of Rowing to secondary school students in Donegal. The programme

#RowingDonegal is being supported by Donegal Sports Partnership. Hopefully, in future, we will have Donegal rowers wearing the green jersey following in the footsteps of rowers like Sinead Jennings, Sanita Puspure and of course the O’Donovan Brothers. This year DBRC club members ranging from U16 to Senior rowed in the National Rowing Centre in Farran Woods against the top clubs in Ireland. The results and times in Cork this year prove the Donegal Bay Rowing Club have some of the fastest rowers on the water in the county. The club which has been actively rowing from the pier in Donegal Town for some 45 years has been joined in recent years by the Donegal Dragon Boat Club and the Kayak club. The Donegal Dragon Boat Club has been established as a club and operating from the pier in Donegal Town for the past 4 years and has gone from strength to strength. The club now has over 60 members from 1880yrs, both male and female and especially aims to encourage those with a breast cancer diagnosis to join, but all are welcome. Members come mostly from Donegal Town
but also increasingly from further afield. This summer the Dragon Boat club held a very successful regatta at the pier with Irish and International teams competing. The pier is also actively utilised by local sailing enthusiasts, charter boat operators and private boat owners, both fishermen and leisure craft enthusiasts, who have always been a feature of the Bay. This year has seen an explosion in activity much of which has been facilitated by and promoted by the Waterbus Manager Eddie Marshall, an active sailor himself, and the Waterbus board members who have been working with all interest groups and users of the Bay. town is certainly entering a very exciting period of positive growth and development for the benefit of the whole community”. The proposed development is respectful of the historic nature of the pier with the Old Abbey of the Four Masters and adjacent graveyards. The fact that the pier is a significant tourist attraction overlooking Donegal Bay has been maximised in the design of the building which boasts an extensive upper floor balcony area with magnificent views over the pier and the bay. DBRC Chairman, Seamus Maguire, believes the Donegal Bay Maritime Centre could be the catalyst for the development of a new maritime experience within Donegal. “The pier is in one respect a hidden gem within the town’s many tourist attractions. We have the potential with this development to draw locals and visitors down to the pier and thereby open up this area of outstanding natural beauty enriched by unique maritime culture and history and provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the “wildness” of the Atlantic in a variety of onthe-water activities.”

“Bundoran, a Village, in The Parish of Innismacsaint, Barony of Tyrhugh, County of Donegal, and province of Ulster, 4 miles (S.W.) from Ballyshannon: the population is returned with the parish. This village, which consists of one street on the road from Ballyshannon to Sligo, is situated on Ballyshannon harbour, on the western coast, and on the confines of the county of Sligo: the coast is bold and rocky. It is a favourite place of resort for sea-bathing during the summer; several small but respectable houses have been built for the accommodation of visitors; and extensive hot and cold sea-water baths have been fitted up. There is a daily penny post to Ballyshannon and Sligo.” Notes: Although the Topographical Dictionary of Ireland - By Samuel Lewis wasn’t published until 1837 – it notes:

Where once was Bella’s garden now stands St. Mary’s Hall And the old Donegal Railway line is gone for good and all. As I stand on the steps of St. Mary’s and look away out towards Tribane I think of the nights in the 50’s when we danced to McCafferty’s band. We would wail all day on a Sunday and watch for the band coming down Then we’d walk up the steps to the pay box and pay out our last half crown. Now those are the days that I cherish and the fun we had at the dance
And my children would say to each other, look Dad has gone into a trance. So you’d walk up the street to Floyd’s corner, the jokes I remember them still And you don’t have to ask where they came from when you pay a wee visit to Phil. And so I have wandered my way up to Storm Hill and I’m looking straight down the town I think of when we played cowboys out on Carney Hill and around And now I’m down at the Cross Roads, outside your community Hall I’ll bid you adieu and good bye to you, I’m going home to old Donegal.

Warp and Weft of Heritage 2018 weekend Remembering the 430th Anniversary of the Spanish Armada Friday 12th - Sunday 14th October Ardara - Glenties - Rosbeg
This year, the festival will host a unique series of events including historic talks, an official documentary screening, wine theatre, living history demonstrations and an Armada excursion by bus. Talks will focus on Armada history, archaeology, heritage, folklore and 16th century Hiberno-Spanish links. These commemorative events are of national and international importance. They also take place during the European Year of Cultural Heritage. The weekend is the third and final event in a series that our group has been involved in. The first was held in July. An historical walk was organised from Kiltoorish (castle site) to Killybegs (harbour) in Co. Donegal. We had an official unveiling of a footprint memorial stone commemorating those that set sail from Killybegs and met their fate, on the Girona, at Lacada Point on the Antrim coast in September 1588. Artifacts from this wreck were recovered and form a key part of the exhibition in the Ulster Museum today. The second event took place last weekend where a sister stone marker was unveiled at Rosbeg Pier, Ardara, Co. Donegal.

What begins as a relaxing, winter weekend getaway for a motley group of strangers, turns into a nightmare of murder and mayhem. Mitchell’s Inn is a quaint retreat cozily nestled in the breathtaking Catskills Mountains. The guests arriving on this particular day don’t know one another, but they do have one thing in common. Each person harbours a deep, dark secret. The powdery, crystalline beauty of falling snow lulls them all into peaceful tranquillity, until the first night when a devastatingly beautiful guest plunges to her death after falling down the grand staircase. An accident, or is her rich boyfriend to blame? After all, they were heard arguing in the middle of the night. When another guest is found bludgeoned to death, and then another, panic sets in and accusations fly. An ice storm means no power and impassable roads, leaving a terrified group of people with no way out. A devious murderer is in their midst, and it’s anyone’s guess who the next unfortunate victim will be. The frigid, forlorn isolation of The Inn tucked away in the desolate mountains, is the perfect setting for murder. Agatha Christie fans will enjoy this good, old-fashioned mystery reminiscent of her “Ten Little Indians”. Have fun deciding who the evil culprit really is.

Once the foliage of your summer bulbs like the Dahlias, Double Begonias and Gladioli start to yellow and die back, it is time to dig them up for storage over the winter. They can sometimes survive a mild dry winter in the soil but it is not worth taking the chance here in Donegal. The dying material of herbaceous perennials should now be cut back too. This will allow you to see where there will be gaps in your bed during early spring. By filling these spaces with a selection of spring flowering bulbs you will get some early colour and there will be fewer places for weeds to grow! Once you have removed the dying material and planted your bulbs, it is a good idea to remove any weeds and then cover the area with mulch. This will
insulate the bed over the winter along with keeping the frost from the roots of your tender perennials. It will also suppress weeds and then break down into the soil improving its structure thus leading to stronger spring growth. Donegal AOH trip to Knock
A celebration of our Lady of Fatima will take place at Knock on Saturday 13th October. The Ceremony starts at 2pm with Stations of the Cross followed by the Rosary. Mass is at 3pm with the Anointing of the sick and disabled. A bus will leave Glencolmcille on Saturday morning at 8am, Carrick 8.10am, Kilcar 8.15am, Killybegs 8.20am, Bruckless 8.30am, Dunkineely 8.40am, Mountcharles 8.50am, Donegal Town 9.10am (Abbey Hotel), Laghey 9.25am, Ballintra 9.30am and Ballyshannon 9.45am (bus stop). St Naul’s Notes
The Club’s 25 Card Drive has resumed for the winter months and is held on Wednesday evenings in Mary Murrin’s, from 9.00pm. New card players welcome. There was no winner of the Royal Flush Jackpot. Trials for the Donegal Youth League side will take place in Ballyare on Thursday October 11th at 7pm sharp. Eamon McConigley will once again be at the helm with the FAI inter Youth League competition starting on the last weekend of October with further group games in November and next February. Please bear in mind that only players born on or after January 1st 2001 are allowed to participate in this years competition as per tournament rules. Club secretaries of the entrants in the interim Donegal Youth League have been notified urging them to send players of the standard required so hopefully a large selection for the management to choose from as they attempt to select a squad.
Donegal Bay Rowing Club and Gym Coach Patrick Brady and Sharon Meehan assisted by the transition year students started the #RowingDonegal coaching programme in the Abbey Vocational School on the 3rd October. The programme will run for 8 weeks culminating in the students getting the opportunity to row on the water in the club’s new Fisa Offshore Quad. Donegal Bay Rowing Club and Gym recently acquired a Fisa Offshore Quad. This is a sliding seat boat with double banked oars for sculling as opposed to sweep oar or single blade rowing. The development is in line with the club’s ambitions to
