Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has welcomed the vote by Dáil Eireann to prevent the closure of 159 Post Offices. The Fianna Fáil amendment came in two parts, firstly to guarantee the current post office network and ensure all citizens have access to their important services by introducing a new Public Service Obligation model; and secondly to prevent the loss of Post Office services in the 159 communities where Postmasters and Postmistresses are retiring, by advertising a contract under the new PSO model. The motion was accepted by the Dáil. Pat the Cope stated, “I would expect the Government to immediately review the current Post Offices which are on the closure lists and set a timeline whereby they can be advertised under a new PSO model which will guarantee their longterm survival.”

The Flu Vaccine

Many of us may have already suffered the common cold this year, as has been evident from the number of people seeking over the counter remedies in the last few weeks. We all know the feeling - blocked and runny nose, sore throat, irritating cough. However, influenza can be much more severe incorporating fever, headaches, aches and pains and extreme exhaustion which can last for 2-3 weeks. Flu is highly contagious and can cause complications in the elderly and those suffering from chronic conditions. Getting the flu vaccine reduces circulation of the virus in the community and reduces the risk of hospitalisation or even flu related deaths. As has been widely publicised, the flu vaccine can now be administered in your local pharmacy and is free of charge for those with a medical card. The following at risk groups should ensure to get vaccinated:

Should you not fall into one of these categories or if you are not fortunate enough to hold a medical card, the flu vaccine can still be administered for a fee of €15. The vaccine works by causing the body to produce antibodies against the flu and is effective within two weeks. Side effects are generally mild. They include slight soreness or redness at the injection site (upper arm) and perhaps a headache and mild fever which lasts only a day or so. You cannot catch the flu from the vaccine.

“The aim of this research work, under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, is to identify measures that could be put in place to mitigate against future flooding in the area. “This latest investment from the OPW comes on the back of funding of €11million for flood relief schemes in nine other towns and villages in Donegal including Burnfoot, Castlefinn, Ballybofey and Stranorlar, as well as Lifford, Glenties, Kerrykeel, Downings and Raphoe.”

Planning Clinics Cut Back

The planning clinic in Donegal Town Public Service Centre which was held twice a month has been reduced to one clinic per month. This clinic had been introduced to give the public a chance to engage directly with planning officers after the planning services were transferred from the Public Service Centre. Donegal Municipal District councillors expressed their concerns as the demand for access to planning officers is greater than ever and felt that one a month was not enough. Planning officer Collette Beattie who was in attendance at the meeting agreed to report back to planning officials on their concerns. The planning clinics in Donegal Town Public Service Centre are scheduled for October 3rd, November 7th and December 5th.

Possible Funding for Church Spire

Minister Joe McHugh has confirmed that his Department are considering an application for funding for the vital repairs which have been ongoing to the spire and tower at Donegal Parish Church recently. “Donegal Parish Church is a highly significant Gothic-style church. It is hugely important to ensure that heritage such as this is protected for this generation and future generations. It is a landmark feature in the skyline of Donegal Town.”

This week, in advance of our upcoming Car Draw on October 3rd, we will review the details around the quarterly car draw for members. The Credit Union have been operating Car Draws since 2009, and ensure that it is completed in a fair and transparent way. In addition to distributing over €50,000 in cash prizes in 2017, we also rotate the quarterly car purchase between local garages.

Eligibility to join the car draw

The car draws are held quarterly in October, December, March and June. Date, time and locations will be advertised through Facebook, text message and in-house posters. ■ The entrant must be over 16 years of age on or before the draw date. Prior to every car draw, a full review of the entrants is carried out. ■ The entrant must be a member of Donegal Town Credit Union. ■ The entrant must pay the annual fee of €40 and ensure that there are funds in their account annually to meet their annual fee. The draw fees will be deducted on the first week of October.

Prizes

■ The prize allocation is allocated on the funds received from the car draw subscription. It is monitored on a quarterly basis. ■ The make and type of the car is at the sole discretion of the Directors of the Credit Union. Cash will be given in lieu of the car. The cash equivalent will be decided by the Board of Directors on a fair value basis. ■ Donegal Town Credit Union will not be liable for any defects, or otherwise found in the vehicle supplied. ■ Additional door prizes and junior prizes are also allocated from the car draw funds. ■ All winners are notified by phone the next morning. A full list of winners is also put up on the website. Members call into the Credit Union to pick up their prizes and they sign to confirm that they received their prize.

■ In the event that the winning member is a person who is in arrears or in default of carrying out any financial commitment to the Credit Union, the Board of Directors may make a decision to withhold the delivery of the prize won by the member until the arrears have been paid or the default has been rectified. ■ Only paid up Members are entitled to receive Door Prizes.

Accounting and Monitoring

■ Prize draws will be regularly reviewed by both the internal and external audit to ensure that systems and controls are in place and operating. ■ The car draw account is held in AIB with a mandate in place. ■ The car draw account is reconciled monthly with full detail on all transactions checked. This is reviewed by the CEO. ■ There is dual control on all car draw transactions. ■ Transactions on the prize draw are reviewed on an annual basis by the external auditor ■ The draw is non-profit making. After deduction of operational costs (staff, SMS, refreshments) any surplus funds will be disposed of by way of extra draws. It is operated on a ‘breakeven’ basis. ■ All draws will be held publicly under the supervision of a Peace Commissioner. ■ Prize draw transactions and balances are reported on the AGM booklet.

Grandma’s Apron

Do children know today what an apron is? The official purpose of Grandma’s apron was to protect her dress because she only had a few. Also it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy children. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Sticks and kindling were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the Autumn the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma stood at the back door, waved her apron, and we all knew it was time to come in for dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace the traditional apron that served so many purposes. Based on a poem by Tina Tivett.

Positive Ageing Week October 1st to October 7th 2018

The theme for this year is ‘celebrating the 100-year life’. Life expectancies have been rising by up to three months a year since 1840, and there is no sign of that changing. A recent study shows that more than half the babies born in wealthier countries since 2000 may reach their 100th birthdays. Many of us have been raised on the traditional notion of a threestage approach to our working

lives: education, followed by work and then retirement. The benefits of living longer and getting older are immense and they affect all parts of our lives; our finances, health and leisure. But because we’re so focussed on the negative things, we forget to enjoy the good things. Positive Ageing Week allows us to look at enjoying living longer and getting older.

Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan fails to deliver for Donegal

Independent TD Thomas Pringle has asked the Minister for Housing about the number of people in Donegal who have applied and have been approved for the Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan scheme introduced last year. “Despite Donegal being a rural constituency people are finding it difficult to obtain mortgages where they currently live and work. A Government-backed scheme is needed to help those who can’t access social housing but who earn too little to afford the house prices at the moment. “Unfortunately the Minister’s reply makes for dismal reading. Firstly it shows that as of Q4 in 2017 only 23 applications for the Home Loan were made by individuals in Donegal indicating the criteria are too restrictive, requiring people to jump through multiple hoops before they get anywhere. “Furthermore, out of those 23 applications three were deemed invalid and 8 were refused. That leaves with only 12 applications “recommended for approval” by the Department of Housing to Donegal County Council resulting in only a 50% success rate. We can only assume that “recommended for approval” will lead to the applicant securing that loan but there’s still a chance they could be denied.

National Fire Safety Week October 1st to October 8th 2018 “STOP Fire - Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives” National Fire Safety Week has its roots in the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 8th, 1871. The former American President, Calvin Coolidge, proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1925 in memory of those who perished in that fire. Since then, in early October, it has been observed each year around the world. Smoke Alarms Save Lives Fit smoke alarms today and make sure they are in good working order. Working smoke alarms will warn you if there is a fire. Remember: Your sense of smell does not work when you are asleep and smoke can put you in a deeper sleep. If someone in the home is deaf, or has impaired hearing, they may not hear an audible warning from a smoke alarm, e.g. if not wearing a hearing aid at night. There are smoke alarm systems on the market that use strobe lights or vibrating pads to give alert of danger from fire. These offer improved warning for people who may

have difficulty hearing a smoke alarm with audible warning. Test Regularly and Replace Batteries Smoke alarms may be tested by pressing the test button with the handle tip of a floor brush. Replace the batteries when they are not working and once a year in standard alarms, or as soon as you hear the warning beep. If you have 10 year smoke alarms, you need to replace the whole alarm after 10 years. At Least One Alarm per Floor Get at least one smoke alarm for each floor in the home. Fit them between the sleeping areas and the kitchen & living rooms – one in the hallway at ground floor, and one at

each upper level, in the landing. For an enhanced level of protection, consideration may also be given to fitting alarms in living rooms and kitchen, in bedrooms used by vulnerable people, or in bedrooms where there is a television or large electrical appliance (such as a computer). (Heat alarms may be considered where fumes from cooking or smoke from cigarettes or open fires could lead to unwanted alarms.) Position smoke alarms at ceiling level in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Vacuum the smoke alarms regularly and wipe the cover. If they get clogged with dust they may not work properly.

Killymard Old Fair Day Returns Get out your vintage gear for the big day out this Saturday!

Now in its fourth year, the Old Fair Day is being held a month later than in previous years and will take place on Saturday, September 29th. Margaret Harte said: “We found in previous years that a lot of people were away in August. We felt there was an appetite for having it a bit later in the year once everyone was settled back at school and in their routines.” As in previous years, there will be free family events throughout the day, with the usual displays of crafts and traditional skills from local people. There will be sheep competitions, children’s games, farm produce, baked goods, jam etc for sale. Organisers are adding a few new competitions including tug-o’-war. People are invited to get teams together from families, clubs, townlands, streets or workplaces to take part in the tug-o’-war. There will also be traditional music, dance and storytelling throughout the day. The scarecrow competition is back, and the committee would love to see the whole community as well as local businesses get involved. Mrs Harte said: “What we would really like to see is townlands, streets, sports clubs, community groups or work colleagues come together to create a scarecrow for the competition. The entry fee for the competition is €5 and they could share it between them. “The Old Fair Day is very much about community and our shared skills and traditions, so this is a great way to get involved and do something together. A high standard was set by last year’s winners, and rumour has it that there is plenty of jiving and waltz practice going on in the homes of Killymard at the moment. There will also be a few surprises on the day - the committee haven’t revealed the

nature of these yet but everyone can expect to be highly entertained. Entry to the Old Fair Day is free. Any donations will go towards the ongoing restoration work at the old church. There is an admission charge of €5 to the house dance in the evening. Meanwhile, work has been progressing well on the old church restoration. The Old Fair Day is a great opportunity to see the craftsmanship of John Friel and his team, Martin McNern builders and everyone who has been involved in the work to date. Spanish Navy in Killybegs and Sligo for Armada Commemorations

This is the Spanish navy ship “ATALAYA” arriving in Killybegs, visiting Ireland for the commemorations of the Spanish Armada tragedy. These were held on last Saturday evening on Streedagh Strand just south of Mullaghmore in Co. Sligo. The Atalaya was just off shore for the occasion. The Atalaya then spent the night at anchor in Mullaghmore. Three of the Armada ships ran aground in this area with terrible loss of life. Incidentally this is where the first potatoes arrived in Ireland.

Captain Izquierdo is directly descended from Medina Sidonia who was the overall commander of the Armada. His family has had a presence in the Spanish Naval forces since before the Armada. He had several other ancestral relatives on the GIRONA which sailed from Killybegs with over 1300 souls and was lost on the Antrim coast with only 9 survivors on 26th October 1588. Gardening with Emer STILL HUNGRY FOR GARDENING? In an ideal world we would all have been sowing vegetables in succession and be in a position to have food ready for harvest all year round. Realistically many of us are over enthusiastic for a short space of time, we find ourselves overeating one particular vegetable that did especially well and then we lose interest as the weather turns cooler. The first thing that needs to be done is to prepare the beds for the winter. This will save you valuable time and effort when spring comes back around. Remove any dead or decayed plants, hoe or pull the weeds, replenish the soil with well rotted farmyard manure or compost and then cover the soil with plastic or weed membrane. Covering the soil keeps in the heat and allows the microorganisms break down the manure quicker and get the soil in good condition for spring sowing. An alternative to covering the bed with plastic would be to sow a green

manure. This is a crop that will grow over the winter and can be dug into the soil in spring to add nutrients back into the soil. If you are eager to keep production levels up, there are a number of crops that are suitable for growing over the winter, including spring cabbages, onions, garlic, spinach, peas, beans and purple sprouting broccoli. These will need an area of sun and well drained soil. This is also a good time of year to set new rhubarb plants. Don’t forget to take precautions against slugs and snails as these are still quite active during the autumn months. Musings of Times Past SCHOOL AND SCHOOLING

Our National School was at the very top of Mountcharles village in a place called ‘Glencoagh’. Built sometime in the 1880’s the building had not changed in any way since its construction, a fact shared I am sure with most country villages of the time. I have recently seen the roll book of the year I started school, 1943, and there were 186 pupils and 4 teachers in our academy of learning. He’s Gone to School Wee Hughie And him not four Sure I saw the look was on him As he crossed the door And he took the hand of Jennie And he took the hand of Dan And with Joan’s wee coat upon him Och the poor wee man. These lovely lines of poetry evoke all the memories of little children everywhere who take that first step into a world that’s ‘full of things to do’. Even though I only have a hazy memory of that long ago day it seemed to signify in some way the severing of a metaphorical umbilical cord. Four teachers taught in our school - three ladies, Miss McAloone, Mrs Gillespie and Miss Dunleavy. Miss Agnes McAloone taught infants and first class and in later life I saw her whole persona reenacted in ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’. She spent most of the school day being kind to us and then retiring to her high chair gazing out the window, dreaming her dreams, and every so often saying “Now, now, I was watching you”. After one year of high babies and one year in first class we were passed on to Mrs Gillespie who appeared to be aware that our academic progress was not what it might be. For the next three years both she and Miss Dunleavy tried valiantly, and in the main succeeded, in bringing us up to the standard required when we would

enter the master’s room for our last three years of primary education. If ever a man was transported from Oliver Goldsmith’s “The Village Schoolmaster” Master Cunningham was he. Master Cunningham loved education, he loved knowledge and by hook or by crook he was determined to impart it and equally determined that it would be retained. If you were bright as in ‘fairly intelligent’ you had some chance with this. But if you were not disposed or able to grasp his words of learning he could be quite brutal. In some ways I belonged to the former category and because of this I got a relatively smooth passage through his kingdom in which his power was absolute. We watched in fear as he would administer quite severe beatings to children who, through no fault of their own, could not come up to the standards required. He taught three classes - 5th, 6th and 7th - and between these three classes he had somewhere in the region of sixty pupils, so as you can imagine there was not much time for, or interest in, special needs. He played poker or snooker in a local businessman’s house on a Sunday night and his visage on Monday morning taught us all we needed to know about the day ahead. “Full well the boding tremblers learned to trace the day’s disaster in his morning face”. On good days he would expound and tell us of world affairs like the Korean War or why president Harry Truman dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even then might come a gentler, kinder moment when he might even crack a joke. The mighty laughs would come from all and sundry each trying to outdo the other in their appreciation of the joke whether we understood it or not.

Oliver Goldsmith had prophesied this man would appear in our midst almost two hundred years earlier. ‘Full well they laughed with counterfeited glee At all his jokes for many a joke had he.’ In some peculiar way there was an inverse symbiosis in his relationship with his pupils - no quarter was asked for or given and nobody took their tales of woe home to parents who seemed to feel and understand this was the way it was. But the other side of this coin was that Master Jim Cunningham turned out some of the brightest pupils and sharpest minds of any school. When preparing us for exams or for scholarships he was quite unstinting in giving all of his time, maybe two hours’ tutorials after school or the same in the sitting room of his own house on Saturdays. For anybody interested, and quite a few were, he taught subjects not on the primary curriculum but which would be of great help for those who were going on to second level - quite advanced geometry, trigonometry, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Oliver Godsmith got it right with: Yet he was kind And if severe in Aught The love he bore to learning Was at fault. This type of schooling has passed into history and a more benign, enlightened approach has replaced it.

Remember if you are interested in gaining skills at knitting or crochet, classes take place on Wednesday mornings in the hall. It’s a great way to make new friends. Happy birthday to Shaun Kelly (Frosses) and Tara Coughlan (Frosses). As most of our readers know there is a great affiliation between the parish of Inver and Tír Chonaill Gaels GAA club in London with Paddy Burke (Killian) its current president and Tom Mohan (Lettermore) chairman. Since the club’s foundation in the early 1960s it has always had a very strong representation from this area both on and off the field. The club made history in GAA circles last weekend when their junior team beat Dulwich Harps at Ruislip to become county champions with all English born players on the team. Congratulations to all involved in the club.

Bunny (Bernard) Carr, whose most famous catchphrase may have been “Stop the Lights!” from the popular RTÉ quiz show Quicksilver, was laid to rest in Sutton, Co. Dublin last week. Bunny was devoted to his late wife Joan who died in 2005. She had contracted polio in the 1960s epidemic but survived, confined to a wheelchair. His career with RTÉ followed a brief period as a bank clerk. Bunny was considered to be a pioneering broadcaster on many shows including 16 years of the quiz show “Quicksilver” as well as “Teen Talk” and “Going Strong”. He left RTÉ in the 1980s to concentrate on his career in Carr Communications where he is widely regarded as the founder of modern media training in Ireland. Among his clients were six Taoisigh who he schooled on media appearances. He also advised many ministers and business leaders. He famously advised both government and opposition politicians. Bunny Carr is survived by his three children, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The annual Sean Dunnion Snr Memorial tournament began in the rain and ended in the sunshine as the boys and girls played some fantastic football in memory of one of Four Masters great stalwarts. After an hour of end to end matches the U8/10s Cup final was decided on a golden point

much to the delight of the winning team. Evelyn Dunnion and her son Sean Jnr were on hand to make the presentation to the fantastic boys and girls who received their trophies before enjoying the well deserved refreshments. Thanks to everyone who helped to organise the tournament, the club

Club Competitions: Congratulations to Eamonn Canney and Peter Sweeney who defeated Eddie McGarrigle and Donie McIntyre to become the Spring League champions for 2018. The Plate Final was won by Michael McGarvey and Raymond Nolan who got the better of Martin Cassidy and Liam Mundy. Well done to Billy Johnston who won the Past Captain’s prize recently, emerging from a very distinguished group of men to claim victory. In the Club Singles, David Sweeney is the first man to reach the final after he emerged victorious in a tight-fought match with Shaun Meehan. One down with two holes left to play, he kept his composure to see off his younger rival. Thursday Specials: After the strong winds and heavy rain that battered our shores earlier in the week, the Thursday's competition was played in glorious conditions by comparison. This allowed John Fleury to take advantage by posting a great score of 22 pts over 9 holes. The ever-youthful Liam Mundy was next with

Friendly The ladies of Donegal Golf Club were delighted to welcome the Narin/Portnoo ladies to the Annual Friendly Competition which was held in Murvagh this year in glorious golfing conditions on Saturday 22nd September. Storm “Ali” had long passed over and the ladies were able to enjoy beautiful sunshine in stunning surroundings. There was a great turnout from both clubs and a very enjoyable day was had by all. The home club may have had a slight advantage numerically. This annual event is always a lovely occasion with friendship and camaraderie to the fore, though a little rivalry creeps in as both clubs want to win/ hold on to the trophy. On this occasion, it was the home club (Murvagh) who reclaimed the trophy with the best 5 scores counting on the day. The winning scores from Murvagh came from Miriam Bennett, Gaye McGoldrick, Michelle O’Rourke, Helen O’Shea and Eibhlín O’Donnell. Top scorers from Narin/Portnoo were Deirdre Patton and Lady Captain Claire Bonner. Following play, the ladies enjoyed a delicious meal in the clubhouse. Lady Captain Mary Walsh extended a Céad Míle Fáilte to

Drumbar United F.C. Notes Under 14s: Our Under 14’s had a hard fought win over Copany on Saturday in the shield Semi final, eventually winning on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Adam Burr in goals saved two penalties proving to be the difference. Thanks to John Potter, Felix Gillespie and Marie McGinty for managing the team on the day. The Shield final is set for Saturday the 29th of September at 2pm against Erne Wanderers. The final will take place in Copany’s ground. Bosco Centre Monday 1st October from 7.00-8.00pm Seniors: Our seniors had their second game of the season on Saturday and got their first win of the season against a strong Drumkeen side. The boys went behind by two goals early on in the game as Drumkeen dominated the first half. However “a game of two halves” couldn’t have been more evident than in this game on Saturday. Tirone O’ Shea came from the bench to score two quickfire goals to level proceedings before Keelan Heeney added another to kill off Drumkeen and take the three points for Drumbar.
