Local man withdraws from Presidential race Kevin Sharkey (57), who sought a nomination to run in the presidential election, has withdrawn from the race. Sharkey who was brought up in Killybegs had many different career paths along the way including a chef, a fisherman, an artist, a singer-songwriter and a TV presenter. In withdrawing from the presidential race he thanked the councils and
councillors who had promised him their votes and asked them to transfer their votes to the journalist Gemma O’Doherty. Kevin is now going to focus on his new collection of paintings with his exhibition ‘The Presidential Collection 2018’ opening on Friday evening at The Basement Gallery on South Frederick Street, Dublin.
Improvements to Donegal Town footpaths and paving to cost €46,000 Works expected to be completed by Christmas At the meeting of the Municipal District last week €46,031 was allocated to Donegal Town for repairs to the footpaths around the Diamond area and for localised paving repairs on the Diamond itself. Cllr Michael Naughton, Chair of the Municipal District, said that engineers had carried out surveys across the towns in the
District and the funding being allocated was directly related to this and focussed on areas of greatest need. Other towns in the District also received allocations from the three-year footpath repair programme - €21,795 for Killybegs; €8,020 for Mountcharles and €133,314 for Ballyshannon.

Drimarone Cycle Presentation The total amount raised by the Dublin to Drimarone Cycle was €26,000. The presentation of cheques was made at a function last Saturday night in the Bluestack Centre. €15,600 was presented to Donegal Hospital (Hospice Unit); and €5,200 each to Letterbarrow FC and Drimarone Development. Well done to all involved in the 259k cycle which took place in July.

HELP YOUR PETS TO WEATHER THE STORM
With the Autumn and Winter approaching, Animals In Need Donegal (AIN) are appealing to pet owners to bring their animals indoors well in advance of any stormy weather. A spokesperson for the animal rescue charity said, “Every time there is a storm, we have a huge surge in calls relating to dogs and cats that have gone missing and many more about frightened animals that have been found wandering around lost”. She continued “Dogs can sense a drop in barometric pressure and with their acute hearing and keen sense of smell can hear rumbles of thunder and wind
and scent rain long before we do and can get themselves into a state long before the storm arrives”. Scientific studies have revealed that dog fur is prone to static build up, especially in large dogs, those with long fur or double coats. It is now believed that dogs can experience numerous shocks from static electricity
during thunderstorms. AIN continued, “Dogs have been known to get in such a panic during storms that they've scaled extremely high fences and dug through seemingly impenetrable boundaries. Running around in a storm they then face all sorts of dangers from being hit by a car to being shot if they end up near livestock”. The charity advises that to keep a frightened dog calm, try distracting him/her but let the animal decide where they want to go to feel safe. Having a radio or TV on in the room can help block out the storm's noise but most importantly act calmly and normally around your pet.
O’Cleary Centre needs funding for new building in 2019 Budget Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has called on the Minister for Disabilities Finian McGrath to ensure that the O’Cleary Centre in Donegal Town is included in Budget 2019. Earlier this year a delegation from the O’Cleary Centre met with the Minister and received a commitment that the centre would be included in the building programme of the Department and the HSE, but subsequently it became clear that there was no funding in 2018. “Therefore, as the budget talks progress I am publicly calling on the Minister to ensure that he makes provision for the capital costs for the construction of a
new Centre in Donegal Town”, said Pat the Cope. He went on to say that the O’Cleary Centre carries out trojan work on behalf of the disability sector, providing supports for those with intellectual disabilities. In 2014 the centre was deemed to be no longer fit for purpose and a new centre would be required to ensure the long-term future of the service. Initially the centre was refused inclusion on the building programme of the Department but following pressure applied on the Minister and the Department it was subsequently agreed to be included on the programme but no funding was approved at the time.
Civil Engineering Research Association Award for Ardara Engineer Declan Gavigan from Ardara received the “Young Researchers Award” at the Civil Engineering Research Association of Ireland (CERAI) conference last month. Declan works with OpenHydro as R&D Manager researching tidal energy. Declan is the son of Hugh Gerard and Eileen Gavigan and brother of well known local singer Grainne.
Jennifer swims English Channel Jennifer Murrin from Killybegs as part of the Mná na Mara relay team including Kathryn Desmond, Colette Kelly, Christine Mahoney and coach Fiana O’Keeffe, completed a swim of the English Channel last Thursday in a time of 13hrs 45mins. Each member of the team swam for an hour at a time and had to keep up a pace of at least 3km per hour. The map shows the track of the swim which had to allow for tidal currents in the channel.

Update on Distillery in Ardara
A new dawn for Ardara with plans for a new distillery to be located on a proposed site on what previously was the show field located on the Donegal Road out of the town. The decision comes amid ongoing issues with the existing site in Carrick, which have delayed construction of the new distillery which had full planning permission granted in 2017 on a 20 acre site. Sliabh Liag Distillery director James Doherty has a passion to reclaim the distilling heritage of Donegal and presently has the gin distillery in Carrick and also produces Silkie Irish Whiskey. Cllr Terence Slowey told The Eye, “While I welcome this great project to Ardara I am very conscious of the sad loss to Carrick. I attended the launch of the gin distillery in Carrick and it was a great occasion. We here in Ardara welcome the development which will bring much needed employment and also boost our tourist industry.”

Following on from a planning permission granted in 2015, Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick have commenced work on a major extension and renovation of their cottage in Kilcar. The home which has been in Broderick’s family for 40 years will more than double in floor area and the byre at the back of the cottage will be converted into “habitable space”. Work commenced recently following the Hollywood couple’s Summer visit to Donegal last month. Designed by Donaghy+Dimond Architects, whose founding director Marcus Donaghy is himself from Kilcar, the development plan is described in the application as - “aiming to respect the existing layout and scale of buildings while allowing the rooms to take full advantage of their aspect and location. The additions will be detailed to have the character of a careful graft on to an existing construction. The plan is to give a new lease of sustainable life to this homestead.”

Charity Shop closes
Donal Cox has been appointed as General Manager at Lough Eske Castle. Donal had previously worked there as Operations Manager and more recently has worked in the Redcastle Oceanfront Golf & Spa Hotel in North Donegal.
The Friends of Bill W Club have announced the closure of their Charity Shop on Quay Street. Martin McFadden said, “Many many thanks to all involved over the last four years, particularly the volunteers who worked so hard sorting everything out and running the shop so well. A BIG thank you also to the local community who generously supported and donated regularly to the shop. Thanks also to our wonderful landlady Anna who was also very good to us. “On a more positive note the Club itself will in no way be affected by the shop’s closure, it will continue to provide a safe space for the recovery community and work for the best possible outcomes for all who avail of its service. Once again and from a very personal point of view I want to say Go raibh maith agat to each and everyone who contributed to the wee charity shop over the last few years.”

A Love Story
Mags Murphy, granddaughter of Patrick Doherty who was born in Mountcharles and was married to Brigid McHugh, Donegal Town, dropped into the office last week to tell us a story about the mature Elm tree over at Tirchonaill Bridge which had some branches cut back before the work began on the bridge. This tree, which is over 200 years old, has the initials of her granddad, or as Mags calls him ‘Pop’, engraved on the bark ‘PD’. “When my pop, Patrick Doherty was emigrating from Donegal back in 1907 at the age of 17, he carved his initials on

I passed this cherished information on to my three children and this became part of our family history and an important visit on each trip from Scotland to Donegal Town. Eighteen years ago when my own son James was visiting Donegal along with his girlfriend Maggie he brought her over on New Year’s Eve to Pop’s tree and got down on one knee and popped the question. To his delight Maggie said “Yes” and they married the following September. “Last year I climbed up on the wall at Castle Street and saw the initials carved out on the bark. This Elm tree is a big chunk of our life and my family and I would be very upset if it was cut down,” Mags told The Eye. There was a massive turnout for the Mid-West Donegal Vintage Club’s final run of the year in Dunkineely in aid of the Manse refurbishment. ROAD SAFETY SHOW: The Safety Roadshow will take place in the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny on Tuesday 10th Oct. It will be hosted by the Donegal County Council. It offers young people the opportunity to learn about the consequences of poor driving behaviour on the roads. Renowned Irish Folk singer Eleanor Shanley and Ireland’s leading classical guitarist John Feeley will perform in Leghowney Hall on Saturday 6th October - part of this year’s Donegal Bay and Bluestacks Festival. This one-night-only show at Leghowney Hall will be the 3rd in an annual series following on from a hugely successful Donal Lunny, Zoe Conway and Máirtin O’Connor Concert in 2016 and wonderful Sean Keane Concert in 2017. Eleanor Shanley possesses a voice as pure and lyrical as the first day she stepped in front of a microphone with De Danann in 1990. Eleanor is renowned for her unique interpretation of Irish and Roots songs. She recorded two critically acclaimed albums with De Danann, ‘A Jacket of Batteries’ and ‘Half Set in Harlem’ and also toured with them throughout Europe, Australia, China, Japan and the USA as well as taking part in several Irish tours. Eleanor has worked with many great musicians through the years and recorded with The Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Donal Lunny, U2 and many more. She and Ronnie Drew formed a great musical partnership with her sweet tones and his unmistakable gravelly voice. They recorded two albums together, “A Couple More Years”, and “El Amor De Mi Vida”, which was recorded shortly before Ronnie died. Eleanor and Ronnie also performed live together on many occasions.
John Feeley from Ballinasloe, Co. Galway has appeared at such festivals as the Guitar Festival of Ireland, Bath International Guitar Festival, the Dundee International Guitar Festival and the Wirral International Guitar Festival. He has appeared as a soloist with The American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Contempo Quartet. He performs regularly in duet with the flautist William Dowdall. Feeley is an enthusiastic champion of contemporary Irish music and in this capacity has commissioned works from many of Ireland’s leading composers
including Seoirse Bodley, John Buckley, Jerome de Bromhead, Jane O’Leary, Brent Parker and Eric Sweeney. He also has a great interest in traditional Irish and Scottish music and has recorded with The Chieftains and published his own arrangements of traditional melodies. He has been described by The Washington Post as ‘Ireland’s leading classical guitarist’ and by Michael Dervan in The Irish Times as ‘a trailblazer...when it comes to the guitar and guitar-playing in Ireland’.

Asthma
Asthma is a disease affecting the airways of the lungs. In asthma, the inside walls of the airways become sore and swollen. This makes them narrower leading to less air supply. Art Collection Sale for Charity The art collection of late playwright Brian Friel is to be auctioned this month in Dublin and the proceeds donated to a homeless charity, the Peter McVerry Trust. Twenty three works from well known Irish artists will be included in the sale which has been donated by Brian's wife Anne who hopes to raise in the region of €100,000 for the charity. Brian Friel's famous works include Dancing at Lughnasa which was based on his five aunts who lived in a small cottage, 'The Laurels' in a wooded area on the outskirts of Glenties. This cottage is presently being restored to become a Brian Friel Centre which will be a permanent monument to Brian and his works in the birth place of his mother. The playwright died in 2015 at the age of 86 and was laid to rest in Glenties cemetery.

Last Saturday I saw a lady taking some photos of the graveyard and went over to her to see if she was looking for any particular family grave. She said that she was not and had been passing through the village and thought what a well kept and unique cemetery. The lady was holidaying in Ireland from France. It just goes to show that people do appreciate our remembrance of the people who have gone before us.

COME TO ME, I WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY All the press coverage has generated great interest in his case and he is inundated with letters and telegrams from all parts of the country. The English newspapers are asking for his life stories and private individuals and institutions begging for subscriptions. One institution asked that he “would be good enough to relieve their present necessities by sending a cheque for ten thousand pounds” Numerous offers of a home are also made to him, but most romantic of the epistles he received was a letter from a widow residing in Windsor. She writes:Dear Sir, I am no longer young; I am past forty, fair and of placid disposition. Five years ago the light of my life passed from this world to what I hope is a better sphere. Since then my life has been one of utter loneliness and misery. My home is situated upon the banks of the beautiful Thames, within sight of the historic Windsor Castle. I keep but one servant and she is a treasure. I feel that we have many sympathies in common. Come to me; I will try to make you happy. Terms we can discuss afterwards. He carried on living in the infirmary for the next thirteen weeks. Somewhat abruptly and without notice he left the workhouse; this is reported at the next meeting of the Board. They began to ponder over whether the breakfast and dinner sets left behind, might cover the cost of his maintenance or even if they had the power to dispose of them under the circumstances. Their fears were allayed by the receipt of a cheque some days later by Dr Warnock, the workhouse medical officer, for the full amount due, except for a small balance of 19 shillings. McGroary is on his way to Paisley in Scotland where his sister and her family live.
REAL NAME OF MILLIONAIRE PAUPER When in Paisley he was attended by Dr. William Livingstone a local medical practitioner, who found he was suffering from spinal disease and kidney disorder. Ultimately his doctor advised him to enter the Royal Alexandra Infirmary in Paisley as a paying patient, which advice he took and remained there for ten weeks. Then as suddenly as he left the Donegal Workhouse and without reason he was driven about twelve miles to an institution in Glasgow, into which he failed to gain admission. This institution had a policy which decreed that inmates were to enjoy a desirable measure of liberty, good company, and convenience for retirement, peace and quiet, freedom from all hurtful toil and care with good provisions, liberty to go to church on the Sabbath and to week-day sermons, and to see their friends. Returning to Paisley he again consulted his doctor and on his advice took up residence in the Globe Hotel. During his stay there he was attended by two trained nurses and besides his doctor was visited by a local priest Fr McLaughlin and several relatives. For a few days his health seemed too improve, but on Wednesday 27th January 1904 he dies. Only after his death do we learn the real name of the millionaire pauper when the Northern Whig newspaper on 3rd of February 1904, reports that “the death was registered as that of John Rodgers and his age given as fifty-four”. When news of his death reaches Donegal there is great speculation on his wealth and what and who has he left it to. How he left matters is still uncertain and the cause of much gossip. The bulk of his money is on deposit at the Donegal branch of the Ulster Bank, and it is rumoured to be just £1,700 besides the household furniture of his villa and other effects. Mr Stewart,
manager of the Ulster Bank, together with Mr PM Gallagher, solicitor, are to carry out his funeral arrangements. His nephew John McGroary went to Paisley and arranged for the body to be brought home. A week later his remains encased in a beautiful oak coffin richly mounted reached Donegal Railway Station by the mid-day train, accompanied by his nephew. The coffin was placed in the hearse and conveyed to the old home in the townland of Shannagh for interment in the family burial grounds at Drumholm. Rodgers, otherwise McGroary John, late of Ballhill, Donegal, contractor who died 27th January 1904 at the Globe Hotel, Paisley, granted at Dublin to Anne Campbell, married woman, effects £1,831 19s 1d. The will came up for proof before Lord Justice Walker at County Derry Assizes, a caveat having been entered in behalf of a nephew, a farmer, residing near Donegal Town. At the last moment, however, a settlement was arrived at. When Rodgers died he was worth £2,100, leaving as his principal beneficiary his sister Anne who was living at Millar Street, Paisley. She was the plaintiff in the probate suit. Dr William Livingstone, Paisley, proved to have been in attendance on the deceased. The will was written out by Rev McLaughlin and witnessed by him and a nurse. Rodgers was then of sound mind, memory and understanding. The terms of the consent were read by Mr McLoone. It is herby consented and agreed between the parties that the Will, dated 23rd January 1904, of John Rodgers be admitted to probate, that the defendant John McGroary, receive out of the assets the sum of £70 on foot of all costs. Mr McLoone said this would absorb the whole estate. Mrs Campbell received £1,000; £100 was left to an old sweetheart in America, legacies were also left to other relatives. Gardening with Emer NO SPRING REGRETS Every spring we get a number of customers that have seen great displays of snowdrops, bluebells or daffodils and they are regretting not having set them the previous autumn. September to November is the ideal time for planting these bulbs. Spring flowering bulbs are versatile, great value for money, are easy to grow, they multiply and come back every year. There is such a great selection of them available that you can have them flowering in your garden from January to May. You can find bulbs to suit every situation in your garden, for example, bluebells like dappled shade so are ideal planted underneath deciduous trees or along a shady bank. Crocus, daffodils and snowdrops can be naturalised scattered through a lawn or can be planted in clumps to make more of an impact in beds or borders. The bulbs should be planted at a depth of 2-3 times their own height and should have the pointed end facing up as this is where the shoot will form from.

Spring flowering bulbs can also make beautiful seasonal displays in pots. To get the best show they should be planted side by side. It is also possible to ‘layer’ bulbs in a large pot to allow for a display of different flowers from February to May. An example of a layered bulb selection might include tulips at the back on the bottom layer, daffodils further forward in the second layer, crocus at the front in the third layer and snowdrops over the top layer, covered with a thin layer of compost to secure the bulbs in place. Bulbs prefer well drained soil so ensuring your pots have good drainage holes and adding grit or horticultural sand to your compost will help with this. Michaelmas Day Michaelmas Day is the 29th September and is the feast of St. Michael who is the patron saint of soldiers, paramedics, paratroopers, police and security officers. Donegal Schoolboys Under 12 Champions League - Round 1 Illistrin 2 - 1 Eany Celtic There was heartbreak for Eany's U12's as they went down to a last minute winner against many people's favourites for the tournament Illistrin. Eany began the tie brightly and went ahead through a free kick from Matthew Byrne. After a good first half the visitors went in at half-time with their lead intact but it was Illistrin who began the second half the stronger and were soon level, courtesy of a thumping shot from outside the box. As the half progressed Eany continued to frustrate Illistrin and even looked dangerous on the counter-attack but the home side committed numbers forward and with only a minute left on the clock managed to break Eany hearts with a last gasp winner. A brilliant battling performance from Eany with Danny Browne, James Boyd and Nathan McInern shining and Peadar Shallow outstanding in goal.

Four Masters U13 girls The Four Masters U13 girls celebrated their first home game of the season with a win over Glenfin on Friday evening with a score line of 3-10 to 1-01. In a dominant display the Masters’ girls were in charge all over the pitch and a put in a great team performance overall. Next game away to St Naul’s in two weeks. Thanks to all who came out to support and provide refreshments for the teams.

Sunday Team - There was late late drama at the Hospital Field on Sunday afternoon which saw Castlefin Celtic score twice late on to snatch victory. Donegal Town looked to be heading through to the next round, until Niall McConnell struck in the last minute to equalise. There was still time however for Raymond Foy to find room on the edge of the area to fire an excellent shot past Enda Kenny in the Town net, to seal a dramatic victory with the last kick of the game. Donegal had done fantastically well to get back into the game, having given away two goals early in the first half with JP Malley and Raymond Foy putting the Fin two goals to the good. A spirited Town comeback followed with Declan Brown pulling one back before half time. The game was well and truly back in the balance after the break when Stephen Graham headed home from a set piece. Donegal looked to have completed an impressive comeback when Barry Mulligan struck home from the edge of the box to put the Town in front, with fifteen minutes left on the clock. As Castlefin pushed for an equaliser, Donegal were a constant threat on the counter attack and will rue a couple of missed chances to extend their lead. Next up is a return to league action this weekend with an away trip to Kilmacrennan Celtic on Sunday, to finally get the league campaign underway. Saturday Team - Donegal Town came out on top in this one after a closely fought battle at the Hospital Field. James Kerrigan was the match winner after having omewhat of a mixed afternoon. Kerrigan was sprung from the bench with twenty minutes to go and earned himself a penalty, before pulling the resulting effort just wide. His head never dropped though, and he got his just reward when he latched onto a through ball late on to fire home the winner. Oldtown had taken the lead in the first half with the lively Daniel Sweeney flicking home a long ball from the keeper to give his side the lead. RESERVES: Our Reserve Team had better days. Despite a level score before half-time, they were defeated by Buncrana. We look forward to their next game coming up soon with Cloghaneely SENIORS: Plenty of excitement at the senior game in Pairc Naomh Brid. While Buncrana levelled at the 59th minute, Naomh Brid came right back with a point that caused controversy. Under 13s team as Debbie was selected for the Southern County panel for the Ulster Blitz. Best wishes to Debbie and her team on Sunday. Now that our underage players have Michael Murphy signed O’Neills footballs, we can expect great things. On that note, well done to the Under 8’s at the Patsy Furey Memorial Cup, this group played 7 a side. The boys put on a great display of skill in every game they played. Our B team won the plate in their games, Our A team had a lot of victories bringing

Ward will feel somewhat aggrieved not to have got on the scoresheet himself, having hit the woodwork three times throughout the ninety minutes. Oldtown pressed hard late on but the Donegal defence marshalled by JP Byrne held on for a deserved win. This weekend sees the visit of last year's Champions Strand Rovers to the Hospital Field with Rory Dunlevy's men looking to maintain their hundred percent record. U16 - The U16s return to action this weekend with a trip to play St Catherines on Saturday in the Cup. Champions League action returns in the coming weeks and the boys have been drawn in a group along with Letterkenny Rovers, Gweedore United and Lagan Harps. Dates to be scheduled later. U14 - Our U14's lost out to Dunkineely Celtic at the weekend in the Shield final which was played in Copany on Saturday morning. It was a great team effort from everyone in a game which they actually led at half time. A strong 2nd half showing from Dunkineely Celtic was enough to earn them a deserved victory. U12 - Donegal/Killymard had a good victory over Eany Athletic at the weekend and they will have another game in a couple of weeks. Donegal Town will travel to St. Catherine’s this weekend in the Cup. them to the final versus Naomh Ultan with a narrow defeat of a point. The low scoring over the weekend was a testament to the difficult conditions that prevailed so well done to Liam Moran (17) for claiming the top spot with 36 pts. 2nd (and finally showing a bit of consistency) was Damien Hanna (18) on 35 pts in a bot from Ryan McNelis (-1) in 3rd. Kieran Mullin (10) was 4th on 33 pts bot. Gross Prize went to Pauric McNelis (03) with 31 pts. Sunday was a busy day around Murvagh with 3 interclub finals being played. First up were the Murvagh Ladies who claimed a narrow 3-2 lead to take them into the 2nd leg of the Maire O’Donnell Competition against Letterkenny G.C. Well done Ladies and best of luck in the return leg next week. Next out was the Senior Scratch Matchplay between Letterkenny and Rosapenna, with Letterkenny G.C. winning by 3.5/1.5 to claim the title. Congrats to Letterkenny. And finally massive congratulations to Oliver Plunkett and his Junior Scratch Matchplay team who overcame a tenacious Ballybofey & Stranorlar challenge to win the final on home soil. With a healthy mix of youth and experience, Murvagh prevailed in tough conditions to claim a maiden victory in the competition for the club. Well done to the whole panel of players involved. Colm Campell took his charges to Ballybofey & Stranorlar G.C on Saturday in the first leg of the Donegal Seniors Final but came up against a very formidable opposition, going down 4.5-0.5 to the home side. Colm will be hoping to make home advantage count in the return leg on Sunday so good luck to all involved. The O’Reilly family hit a rich vein of form recently with mother and son featuring heavily in the prizes. Congratulations firstly to Crona O’Reilly and Mervyn Walker who won the DNG Billy Johnston & Company sponsored Mixed Foursomes, by beating Padraig Farragher and Mary Talbot in the final. Talk about keeping it in the family... congratulations also to Ciaran O’Reilly who was the winner of the Kevin Britton Memorial Cup recently as well.

Thursday Specials The 9-hole competition brought some of the ‘veterans’ from years past to the fore on Thursday last as Des Daly secured victory in a bot from Donnie McIntyre when both finished on 19 pts. Another wily veteran, Sean Diver, won the Members Prize with 15pts. Next weekend’s competition sponsored by Fletcher Golf (Singles Stableford) 22nd/23rd September. HEARTS & HIPS SCRAMBLE. The 5th Annual Hearts & Hips Scramble (in memory of Jimmy Higgins) took place here last Friday on a day when the course was battered by strong winds and torrential rain. The organising committee made the wise decision to curtail the competition to the first 9 holes and, thankfully, the rain eased off as play commenced.

The winning team set out their stall early on when Donal McGill pitched a magnificent 3rd shot straight into the 1st hole for an opening Eagle. Backed up by experienced team members Brendan Reck, Paul Murphy and Margaret Buckley, they then battened down the hatches and reeled off 8 straight pars to chalk up the winning score of 27.3. The Lady Captain, Mary Walsh, played a major role to ensure that her team ended up in 2nd place by the narrowest of margins from the 3rd placed team, capably led by the prolific winner from through the Gap, Betty Kelly. Proceeds from the outing amounted to €300 and this money was presented to the Patients Comfort Fund at Donegal Community Hospital and this ensured that the day was a great success.
