Katie is a granddaughter of Georgie and Katherine of the former Dunlevy’s Bar on the Main Street in Mountcharles. The double World Champion who lives in Crawley, England came home to make a presentation of her framed rainbow jersey to Donegal Bay Cycling Club in memory of one of their loyal members, the late Liam Hyland.

The boutique will open on the 21st September and be called ‘V2 Boutique’. Proprietor Mary Meehan is going from strength to strength opening this boutique in addition to Verve and The Outlet in Donegal Town. Talking to The Eye, Mary is very excited about opening in Ardara as she is returning back to her home turf. The Ardara lady started her retail career in Alan Given’s along with her sister Deirdre many years ago and the rest is history. The new boutique will stock casual wear with popular labels such as B-Young, Street One and many more as well as nightwear, daily essentials, shoes, jewellery and accessories. The shop will employ local staff and will be open six days a week. We wish Mary every success with her new venture.

Heritage Week Talks at St John’s Point World War II, also known as “The Emergency”, left its mark on the landscape of Southwest Donegal. Dunkineely Community Ltd presented several talks about this period in our history and how it affected the people of this area. The talk centred around the Local Defence Force’s Lookout Post at St. John’s Point, from where volunteers kept an eye on the unfolding drama offshore.

The construction of the ‘EIRE’ sign, at the end of ‘the point’, made from whitewashed stones and which could be seen from the air by passing aircraft was discussed, as were the two war graves from this period; one beside St. Peter’s Church and another in Killaghtee Old Church Graveyard. All of these things had an intertwined and fascinating story to tell.

Mountcharles Community Walkers enjoy a day trip

On Wednesday 28th August Mountcharles Community Walkers had a day trip to Gola Island just off the Donegal Coast. The walkers meet every Wednesday at 10am at the Green Pump in Mountcharles for a walk around the locality with a cuppa at the end of the walk. New members are always welcome.

Cycling Presentation Continued from page 1 Katie, who is partially sighted, along with her pilot Eve McCrystal riding as a pair, picked up their first gold medal in the time trial and silver in the road race (75k) at the Rio Paralympics in 2016. Up until 2011 Katie had been concentrating on rowing at a national level in England until she was approached by the head coach of Irish cycling to see if she would be interested in trying out the sport. This she did with great success, declaring herself for Ireland as her father was a native of Mountcharles. Katie’s role is known as ‘The Stoker’ and pilot Eve controls the gears and the brakes but in all other aspects it is an equal partnership. Katie has a gruelling regime for training, doing six varied length rides on the road every week, combined with daily gym

sessions. In September 2017 Katie‑George and Eve McCrystal secured gold in the UCI 2017 Para-cycling Road World Championships in South Africa. The pair earned a WB Tandem Time Trial win with a six second advantage in the 31km race against the clock. The Mountcharles girl said after the race it felt amazing and that they really wanted the title and that their aim was to get the world stripes which they decided to focus on straight after winning in Rio. After her first win in 2016 Katie got a hero’s welcome when she returned and was paraded on the Main Street by the Mountcharles band in the company of her parents John and Alana, town Mayor Michael Kerrigan and Cllr Noel Jordan. The Gold Medallist was overwhelmed with the welcome. See photo spread of the presentation on centre pages.

Sliabh Liag Distillery to move to Ardara

At a meeting of Carrick Development Committee earlier this week, James Doherty, founder of Sliabh Liag Distillery, laid out the reasons that have led to the decision not to build the new distillery in Carrick but instead to build at a newly purchased location in Sandfield, Ardara. The loss of 40 jobs and a huge ongoing tourism potential left many of the 100 in attendance in shock, however Mr. Doherty explained in great detail the reasons behind this decision which principally relate to planning and objections to the development. Now exporting the Silkie Whiskey and Dulaman â€œMaritime Ginâ€? globally the company plans to continue its growth and development in the new location in Ardara and Mr Doherty expressd his sincere regret that the plans could not go ahead in Carrick.

Public Meeting to discuss Policing in Donegal

Members of the public are invited to come along to a public meeting hosted by Donegal Joint Policing Committee on Tuesday 25th September at 7pm in the Abbey Hotel. Chair of the Committee Cllr. Gerry McMonagle believes that this meeting is an opportunity for the public to engage with the members of the committee and to raise issues relating to community safety. “This is a great opportunity for both the public and the committee to engage on important community safety issues across the county. We are also offering the public an opportunity make submissions and observations prior to the meeting and to raise questions on matters relating to crime and safety issues within their own

community” said Cllr. McMonagle. The 2019 Donegal Policing Plan is also being prepared and submissions are being sought under the following headings: Community Engagement and Public Safety; Confronting Crime; Roads Policing; National and International Security; Organisational Development and Capacity Improvement. New Computer Science Room opened at AVS

AVS Principal Geraldine Diver with Gerard Grant Vice President of Technology,Pramerica and Ronan Doherty Deputy Principal of AVS. The AVS is one of only two schools in the county to offer leaving cert computer science as a subject. There are forty schools across the country offering the subject and two of those are in county Donegal, St. Eunans in Letterkenny and the AVS in Donegal Town. This project has been supported by Pramerica who have sponsored 20 PCs and 10 laptops for the class. Last Wednesday the official opening of the new computer room took place with a team from Pramerica attending along with ETB representatives, members of the Board of Management, Parents’ Association, teachers and students. Calls for support for pre-school transition SIPTU is calling on the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) to adequately support a pre-school to primary school transition plan developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). Early Years manager and SIPTU activist, Mick Kenny, said: “The journey from preschool to primary is a big step for a child. The average rate of pay for a qualified Early Years educator is €10.88 per hour, with thousands employed on 15 hours a week, 38 weeks a year contracts. Ireland spends just 0.2% of GDP on Early Years education which is well below the OECD average of 0.7% and the UNICEF target of 1%.” The SIPTU Big Start campaign organises thousands of Early Years educators and providers across the country. The core demand of the campaign is for the creation of high quality, affordable Early Years services delivered by professionals who are paid a decent wage.

Bishop Introduces New Curate to Inver Group Members of the Church of Ireland Grouped Parishes of Inver, Mountcharles, Killaghtee and Killybegs got a first opportunity to meet their new Curate since her ordination when Rev Lindsey Farrell was introduced formally to parishioners at a Service in St John’s Church in Inver on Tuesday last week. The church was filled to capacity for the Service of Introduction, which was led by the Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Ken Good, and attended by Church of Ireland clergy from throughout the Diocese of Raphoe, many representatives of other Christian denominations in south Donegal and local politicians. Also in the congregation were Rev Farrell’s husband, Keith, their three children and all four of the children’s grandparents. During the Service, Rev Farrell revealed – while being interviewed by Bishop Good before the congregation – that she had first felt the call to ministry in her late teens, although she had subsequently worked in business for a period of time. “Selection was quite daunting,” she said, “quite intense, but also a time of fellowship.” She had been a keen distance runner – taking part in 10k events – but explained that her knees were “starting to go”. Bishop Good later suggested that praying was a good remedy for this. A presentation was made to Rev Canon

Rev Farrell’s Profile

I am originally from Enniskillen and I am married to Keith. We have three children; Grace (13), Emily (11) and Harry (9). Before going into ministry I worked as a Finance and Monitoring Officer in a Grant Funding Agency. My hobbies include swimming, walking and spending time with family. I felt a call to ministry from my late teens but didn’t take the step until much later.

I have spent the last three years training at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in Dublin, and spent most of last year working alongside Canon Ian Ellis in Rossorry Parish Church in Clogher Diocese. The elements of ministry that I most enjoy are sharing God’s word and working alongside the people of the parish and the wider community. I am looking forward to moving to South West Donegal, getting to know the people, and supporting them as much as possible. It has been confirmed that Bosco will visit County Donegal as part of his 40th Anniversary Tour when he will have a performance in An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny, on March 23rd 2019. Ireland’s most famous puppet has been around since the late seventies, but is still just five years old. It’s been a while since he had his own TV show on RTE but he still travels all over the country doing live shows to entertain boys and girls of all ages. Calls for “Wild Rhubarb” Eradication Calls have been made for Donegal County Council to implement an eradication programme to tackle the invasive plant commonly called “Wild Rhubarb” but officially know by its Latin name Gunnera Tinctoria. The Gweedore area is affected particularly at present and the local community have called for a similar programme to that which was very successful on Achill Island recently. Wild Rhubarb is native to Chile and can live in what most plants would consider poor conditions. First brought to Ireland in 1939 as an ornamental plant, its popularity as a garden plant grew quickly, and the plant did well since it was growing in a climate

similar to its southern hemisphere home. However, despite the similarities of climatic conditions, it was growing in a community of completely different plants without its natural competitors and predators. It began to spread, and now Gunnera Tinctoria is found on western Ireland’s coastal cliffs, waterways, roadsides, wet meadows and derelict gardens and fields. Propagating both by seed and by vegetative means, in early spring its leaves begin to grow and in just weeks can reach over 2 metres in height, shading all plants growing below its wide leaves. Gunnera Tinctoria is now a major threat to plant biodiversity in some areas of Ireland, because smaller plants cannot grow in the shadow created by the giant leaves.

Sean (25) is a son of Terence McDermott and was goalkeeper for Letterbarrow for some time before he served his apprenticeship with Arsenal and then the family moved to Norway. WELCOME BACK The staff and management of The Abbey Vocational School would like to welcome all of our students back to school. LEAVING CERT RESULTS Congratulations to each and every one of our Leaving Cert students. We are so proud of you all. The Leaving Certs results this year were once again excellent and well ahead of national averages. FIRST YEAR INDUCTION We are delighted to welcome our new first years to the AVS. They are by now beginning to find their feet and settle in. They took part in a two-day induction programme, which went extremely well. We will be holding a first year parents Information Night on October 4th to assist you in supporting your son/daughter during this transition. STUDY SKILLS LEAVING CERTS The study skills guru and motivator Michael Bond will spend a day delivering study skills courses to our Leaving Cert students. This Co. Galway man is known to many for his exploits on the side-line of hurling pitches, having brought the Offaly Hurling Team of 1998 to All Ireland success. He is also widely acknowledged for his skills of communicating with young people and Michael will work with our Leaving Certs around focus motivation and planning for a successful leaving cert year. SECOND AND THIRD YEARS Amazing Brains, an educational and motivational company, will deliver a study programme to second and third years. FIRST YEARS The first year of secondary school is crucial in enabling students to develop both the mind-set and study habits to succeed at school. BLAST OFF is an upbeat, interactive and fun programme that has been designed to captivate, motivate and educate young people about their brain and learning. This programme is guaranteed to reinforce and complement the work being done by teachers in the school. STUDENT VOICE Student Voice is a very important part of the success of our school and we continue

to develop this area with the introduction of class captains. Our Leaving Cert students have submitted a Prefect application form for the role of Leaving Cert Prefect. These students will be interviewed in the coming weeks and a team of prefects for 2018/2019 selected. The Student Council will be elected in the coming weeks. COMPUTER SCIENCE ROOM OFFICIALLY OPENED We have officially opened our new computer suite for our Leaving Certificate students. The computer suite has been fully kitted out with state of the art computers, 20 PCs and 10 laptops, which have been funded by Letterkenny based company Pramerica. The school is one of only 40 schools in the country and one of only two in Donegal who were chosen to offer the new Leaving Certificate Computer Science subject to twenty-five of their students starting this September. TY Our Transition Year has got off to a busy start this year. The Year Head is Mr. Griffin. The bonding trip takes place this week where all of our students head off to Gartan Outdoor Education Centre. WELLBEING HEALTHY SCHOOLS Two members of the Healthy Schools Committee will be attending a training day on 25th September in Letterkenny. Following this event the committee select a focus for 2018/2019. FIRST YEAR GAELIC FOOTBALL BLITZ Congratulations to all of our first years who took part in a Blitz on Friday last. Thank you to Mr. Griffin who organised the Blitz in conjunction with John Joe O Shea. The day went very well and the AVS fielded two teams. One of the teams took the Shield trophy and the other team were runners up in the final where St Columba’s Stranorlar beat them narrowly. Thanks to the Four Masters for the use of their pitch and to Mr. McLoone and Mr. O’Donnell for assisting in the running of the event as well as to the many teams who took part.

WILD BLACKBERRY, BRIOCHE AND BUTTER PUDDING. SERVES 4 - 6 It’s the season for foraging wild blackberries and tucking into Sunday lunch puddings. This delicious recipe allows you to do both. Once the blackberry season is over simply use frozen raspberries. Hate throwing away stale bread? Forget the brioche - cut off the crusts from stale bread, butter and cut into diagonal quarters. Ingredients • 90 grms butter (approx.) • 1 small brioche loaf (sliced) or 6 small brioche rolls (halved lengthways) • 3 eggs • 150 mls cream • 150 mls milk • 3 tblsp sugar • 150 – 200 grms blackberries (washed) Method 1. Pre heat oven 180⁰c 2. Butter the sliced/halved brioche bread/rolls. 3. Place half the bread/rolls in a shallow (approx. 6 – 8 cms deep) ovenproof dish, butter side down. 4. Place half the fruit and half the sugar evenly over the bread layer. 5. Top with the rest of the bread, butter side up and place the rest of the fruit and sugar evenly over the buttered bread. 6. Make the custard by whisking the eggs, milk and cream together. 7. Pour evenly over the layered, bread, fruit and sugar. 8. Leave for 30 minutes for the bread to soak up the custard. Press the surface down with a fork to soak any remaining dry areas. 9. Place the pudding in a roasting tin half filled with hot water. 10. Place in the preheated oven to cook for 20 – 25 minutes until the custard is cooked and the sugar has caramelized to give a delicious golden-brown soft crust. 11. It is important not to overcook as it results in a pudding that is heavy and stodgy. A perfect brioche and butter pudding is light and soft. 12. Serve warm, dusted with icing sugar. Serve cold leftovers in slices with a dollop of ice cream. She taught home economics for 25 years and now runs Donegal Cookery School at Donegal Manor. Tom Lyons has announced that he will be retiring from the restaurant trade on Sunday 30th September. He would like to thank all his customers, staff and suppliers for their support over the past eight years in the Manhattan Steakhouse. He also wants to assure all customers who have bookings or plan to visit the restaurant between now and the end of the month that the food and service will continue to be of the current high standard. For those who have Manhattan Steakhouse vouchers, they can spend them over the next three weeks or Tom has said he will refund the balance in cash. Tom says everyone involved in the business from customers to staff and suppliers have made the eight years he spent in the Manhattan Steakhouse very special. He said that he hopes people will continue to visit for a meal or a drink over the next few weeks. Hundreds of golf balls were found on the beach at Rossnowlagh last week after a number of tourists from outside the area used the beach as a driving range. Residents in the area were appalled to find such a large number of golf balls on the sand and some commented on the terrible environmental impact that they would have had if they were washed out to sea.

Up here it’s different! The Summer of 2018 has been one of the best we have experienced in Donegal for several years. The end of May and the month of June gave us higher temperatures and drier conditions than we had been having in recent years. However in late July and August Donegal did not experience the high temperatures other parts of the country were having and much to the relief of farmers and gardeners, the rain began to return and our Summer began to resemble what we were used to. At Shannon Airport the Summer’s highest temperature of 32°C was recorded, and

Cork Airport reported its driest Summer since 1962. Meanwhile Malin Head had the lowest average seasonal temperature in the country where the average temperature was 14.3°C, and rainfall levels recorded at Finner Camp were not below average for the Summer, being the only place in the country to hold this dubious honour. All in all we had a really good Summer in Donegal without experiencing too many extremes in temperature or the drought conditions that a lot of the country had to cope with.

Pringle speaks at US conference on his Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill

Independent TD for Donegal Thomas Pringle spoke this week at an international conference in San Francisco on his successful Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill which makes Ireland the first country in the world to divest public money from fossil fuel companies. The Bill will compel the Government to remove public money from investments in fossil fuel companies as part of Ireland’s obligations under the Paris Agreement and was passed in July with cross-party support and is due to pass the Seanad shortly in the new term. The event took place on last Monday, 10th September, where Deputy Pringle spoke alongside former President Mary Robinson and others.

From this time of year on, they will find it harder to get food naturally due to wet weather and freezing conditions. It can be quite rewarding to know you are helping the young birds survive their first winter or giving migratory birds the added energy to travel thousands of miles. It can also be entertaining to watch and identify the different birds that visit. In order to fatten up your resident birds for the cool weather or give those migratory birds the added calories to sustain them on their travels you should choose a feed rich in fat and oils. Peanuts, suet treats and nyjer seed are the most beneficial for autumn/ winter feeding. Water is also essential for the survival of birds and other

wildlife over the winter so keeping a bird bath or even just a saucer of fresh water out for them will greatly help. Add a drop of warm water on the cooler mornings to keep it from freezing and if you place a copper cent in the water you will prevent algae from growing on it too. Keep in mind that not all birds will eat from feeders. There are a few that prefer to eat from the ground like the wagtail and the robin, so don’t forget to scatter some seed or peanuts for them too. It is important to clean feeders and water holders regularly to prevent the spread of disease among your garden birds. The Wealthy Irish–American in Donegal Workhouse

Researched and written by James McDaid In September 1903, a man in his fifties or early sixties enters the Workhouse in Donegal Town as an inmate. He hasn’t walked or arrived on the back of a cart but arrives here in style as would befit a gentleman, in a carriage and pair. There is criticism as well as humour in the action of this man who has been living at The Cottage, Ballhill, since his arrival from New York in April. Although known as “The Cottage and Green Island” it is a fine two storey house with extensive out‑buildings and beautiful views of the bay and distant mountains. Until recently occupied by Dr Swan it is owned by wealthy merchant and business man John Welsh who has contributed a substantial sum for the erection of the Sacred Heart Chapel in Mountcharles. PAUPER MILLIONAIRE The story comes to light at one of the weekly meetings of the Board of Guardians held at the Workhouse, Donegal Town. The Master said he wished to have the instructions of the Board as to what he should charge for the maintenance of Mr McGroary, who was occupying a room in the Workhouse which he had exclusively to himself. As to the circumstances of the case, the Master stated that Mr McGroary had lately arrived in Donegal from America, where he had made “tons of money”. McGroary, a native of Shannagh just outside Laghey on the Pettigo road, was born in mid 1800s, went to Scotland as a young lad and

then on to New York where he worked as a labourer. As time went on he was employed by the Corporation Works, taking on small sewer contracts, in which he was successful and was then able to fund larger contracts. As his health began to deteriorate, having made what he considered enough money for future independence, he returned to Donegal in April of 1903. At first he stayed at one of the hotels in the town before renting a house near the sea at Ballhill. Having become ill and unable to look after himself, being under the care of Dr Warnock he was advised to enter the infirmary. The story gets reported in the papers when the news of his strange choice of abode is discovered, “He did not find hotels in the northwest of Ireland to his liking, he asked to be admitted to the Workhouse as a paying boarder. When his request was granted he drove to the Workhouse in a carriage and pair”. The papers reported that he was making a protest against the standard of the hotels in the town, taken as an effective method of criticising his countrymen on the lack of good hotels in the area. It goes on to say, “How many tourists every year desire to go to Ireland but shrink from it? Owing solely to the doleful tales of hotel accommodation and railways; and how much wealth the island thereby loses.” He is quickly dubbed the ‘Pauper Millionaire’ by the press. As unusual as the case is, paying inmates in Poorhouses were more common than supposed. It often

happened that when a person became a burden on a family, they would prefer to pay guardians for their keep rather than to look after them themselves; much like the modern‑day nursing home. FRANCE TO RECUPERATE Donegal Town at the time had at least three fine hotels. The Arran Arms, now the Bank of Ireland, McGinty’s which evolved into the Abbey Hotel and Smullen’s Commercial Hotel on the corner of the Diamond, now the Irish House, as well as many other lodging houses. McGroary finds the Workhouse officials civil and obliging. His room is austere with bare whitewashed walls, devoid of all furniture except a couple of chairs and a bedstead. He is also allowed to have some of the ingredients of his meals purchased outside. For this he agrees to pay the Guardians £1 a week. At a later meeting of the Board of Guardians it is stated that his health continues to be fairly good. He is greatly annoyed by the attention given to him by the newspapers, even some of the London dailies making a special of his case reporting that his diet is under medical supervision. They are also anxious to report that sets of solid silver from his seaside villa are used in the services of his meals and that since his arrival the Master has only received £1 in cash but the strange visitor is regarded as wealthy. He is being medically advised to go to the South of France to recuperate. Continued next week…

International Peace Torch in Donegal Town The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run is a global torch relay that seeks to promote international friendship and understanding. On the 1st March, Bulgaria played host to the opening ceremony for the European leg of the 2018 Peace Run. An international team of runners will carry a flaming torch as a symbol of Peace passing it from hand to hand and heart to heart through all of Europe. The runners are visiting school children, community groups, organisations from all walks of life, country leaders, dignitaries and athletes, sharing with them the ideals of encouragement and support for others and fostering teamwork and peace in our dayto-day lives. The runners will travel on a 20,000 km journey through 47 European countries to finish in Lisbon, Portugal on 7th October. The Irish leg of 2018 run began in Derry on the 4th of September when the team arrived from Scotland. The run will pass through Derry, Donegal, Enniskillen, Cavan, Kells to reception at the Mansion House, hosted

by Dublin’s Lord Mayor followed by a meeting with TDs at Dail Eireann before departing for Wales. The simple aim of this non-profit event is to foster goodwill among people of all nations. It is organised and financed entirely by local volunteers. The torch has been held by many prominent people such as Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev and sports personalities such as Muhammad Ali and Carl Lewis. In Ireland, Sonia O’Sullivan, Catriona McKiernan and Bernard Dunne have held the Peace Torch. Presidents Mary McAleese and Mary Robinson have also welcomed previous Peace Run teams.

We read in the gospel of Mary who ‘treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.’ The revised programme on our One Day Retreats seeks to open greater opportunity to ponder how the Lord may be speaking to us in our lives and our experience.” One Day Retreats are on the following days this month; 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 30th. The day is facilitated by the authors of the new book ‘Finding God in the Mess’ - Jim Deeds & Brendan McManus SJ - who will offer ways to support people to pray with difficult situations in their lives; help remove blocks to realising God is close to them, especially in tough times; share several different methods of praying and how to integrate these methods into everyday living. It challenges us to question the assumption that God is to be found only in the ‘tidy’ parts of our lives. The two workshop sessions of the programme will offer space for participants to put the life-giving insights, born of the authors’ own experience, into dialogue with their own life experience.

SATURDAY TEAM - The Saturday Team got their league campaign off to a great start with a comfortable 5-0 win away to Keadue Rovers. The lads dominated throughout with Adrian Ward and Ronan McHugh on the scoresheet in the first half. Eany Celtic U16’s produced a good performance at the weekend against a strong Finn Harps Academy side to earn a 3-3 draw. It was a performance that should give the team great encouragement with their impending champions league campaign on the horizon. Although Eany went in 2-0 up at half-time after a brace from Nathan Maxwell, Harps were unlucky Oisin Meehan, scorer not to be level after Tom Daly cleared Nathan Maxwell scorer of two first half goals for Eany. of Eany’s third goal. one off the line and they saw another strike the crossbar. Oisin Meehan extended Eany’s lead in the Harps started the second half well and 65th minute with a fine finish after a goal on the 50th minute were rewarded for mouth scramble but two late goals from their endeavours when Cian McEntee Sean Gallagher and Peadar O’Baoighill saw beat three Eany men and duly converted. Harps come away with a share of the spoils.

Donegal Town RFC Notes Donegal 1XV 5 Cooke 2XV 36 Donegal Town 1XV started their season on Saturday with a game where the scoreboard didn’t reflect the contest. A disastrous start for Donegal losing Zack Balogun, who was stretchered off with a knee injury in the opening minutes. Nevertheless the 14 men opened the scoring on 15 minutes with Eddie Gallagher touching down following good work from Props Jason Conway and Danny Toland. Cookstown were awarded a penalty which they converted and then got a soft try in the 25th minute with the touch judge calling for a knock on, but to no avail. Donegal’s day did not improve any with the home side losing try scorer Eddie Gallagher to

a suspected concussion. Half time score 5-10. The second half was always going to be a tough ask but the 13 men did themselves proud. Cookstown eventually wore them down to run in a number of scores and the game was over as a contest midway through the second half. However, Donegal stuck to their task well and camped in the opposition 22 for long periods but were unable to break down a solid Cooke defence. Under the circumstances there were plenty of positives to take with some fine individual performances from Danny Toland, Jason Conway and Gareth Marais. Best wishes to Zack for a speedy recovery and hopefully Eddie Gallagher can remember where he is now.

Past Lady Captains Celebrate in Murvagh

Donegal Golf Club past Lady Captains with 2018 Lady Captain Mary Walsh. In spite of strong winds on Sunday last, there was a great turnout of past Lady Captains to play in the annual competition. Following the play on the fairways, there was great craic and reminiscing in the clubhouse as many past Lady Captains returned to enjoy a delicious meal and catch up on all the latest news and events going on in Murvagh. It is always a great occasion to welcome back former members. It is clear to see how Murvagh still holds a special place in their hearts. Mrs Maureen Temple spoke of her long association with Donegal Golf Club, both at Tullycullion in the early days and then at Murvagh. She recalled with fondness matches / encounters over the years, with a little “pressure” on her sometimes. Maureen also acknowledged and praised Mrs Máire O Donnell who gave so much of

Credit Unions have a nomination facility whereby, if you are over 16 years old, as a Member can nominate who is to receive the property of your Credit Union accounts upon your death. To be valid, a nomination must:

■ be made by a person of 16 years or over who has been duly admitted as a Member of the Credit Union in accordance with the Act and the Rules; ■ be in writing and delivered during the Member’s lifetime to, or made in a book kept at, the registered office of the Credit Union; ■ name and clearly identify (e.g. there is more than one person of the same name) the person or persons to be entitled to the benefit of the nomination (the “Nominee”). Note that this person or persons (who need not be a Member of the Credit Union or next of kin) cannot be an Officer of the Credit Union unless he/she is also a Member of the family of the nominator; ■ and specify the property involved i.e. whether it is all or part only of the nominator’s property in the Credit Union, subject to the statutory maximum of €23,000 (increased from €13,000 with effect from 17 October 2006).

Considerations when selecting your Nominee

■ A valid nomination covers all Credit Union property. Property may be assigned to one person only (not necessarily next of kin) or divided between various people. Such division of property between various Nominees should be made absolutely

clear on the form of nomination. Where only one person is nominated by the Member, they will be the sole beneficiary of their Credit Union property on death. ■ The nomination will supersede their Will and is not revocable or variable by the Will or any Codicil to it. ■ Where a Member marries after having completed a nomination, that marriage will automatically revoke the nomination (meaning no nomination is in existence) and they may wish to consider completing a new nomination at that time. ■ The death of the Nominee (prior to that of the Nominator) will automatically revoke a nomination and they may wish to consider completing a new nomination at that time. ■ Completion of a new nomination revokes all previous nominations. ■ If the nomination does not cover all the nominator’s property, the unaffected property forms part of the nominator’s estate and as such, may only be released by the Credit Union to the executor or administrator on production of a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration ■ In order to be valid, the form of nomination must either: - be on file at the registered office of the Credit Union; or - be delivered to the registered office during the Nominator’s lifetime.
