Clocks not to go back in future? Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, has said that a recent consultation across the EU had shown that more than 80% were in favour of stopping the time change every winter and summer. The proposal could have the potential for Ireland to have 2 different time zones after Brexit. However the change would need approval from all EU national governments as well as the European parliament to become law. Russia, Turkey, Belarus and Iceland have stopped changing time in recent years.

On Easter Saturday this year, I stood on the Diamond with family and friends to raise money for a very special organisation.
'Sables Nua' is a school and shelter for orphans and vulnerable children, located in the dusty town of Kabwe, Zambia. Run by an Irish couple, Sables provides education, food, clothing and medical care for the poorest children in Kabwe. I raised over €600 in Donegal that Saturday which made up more than half of the total amount raised. All volunteers must selffund their trip so any money raised goes directly to Sables. Visiting a developing country and seeing some of the horrendous conditions that
people live in has been the hardest, but best thing I've ever done. Despite the challenges that the children in Kabwe face on a daily basis, they are happy. I realised that having your health, having a family that love you and having food on your table are the most important things in life. Everything else is a sheer and utter privilege. On behalf of myself and the happy children of Sables, thank you so much for your support. The 20 cent or €2 you threw into a bucket at Easter travelled thousands of miles towards a very worthy cause. Back in the Day Book Launch “A New Day Dawns” Thanks to Ann Sharkey for letting us use the old receipt below from The Central Hotel in March 1945, shortly before the end of World War II. A week’s full board cost £2. Mr Scott stayed for 8 weeks. The 2d stamp on the bill was “Stamp Duty” paid to the government by way of a stamp placed on each bill. The Second World War was known as “The Emergency” in Ireland as the country was neutral. The Emergency Powers Act lapsed in September 1946 but the “State of Emergency” was not officially rescinded until 1st September 1976.
Pen2Paper writers group is made up of people from all over south and west Donegal. They meet every second Tuesday evening at the Family Resource Centre in Donegal. The book is a collection of stories, poems and artwork. It is dedicated to Peggy Hegarty (Donegal) and Susan Underwood (Inver) both members who have sadly passed away. Next Tuesday evening the group will host a trip on the Waterbus to launch the book in Donegal Town. All proceeds from the book and Waterbus trip will go to Donegal charities R.N.L.I., Alzheimer’s Society and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Looking After Your Child’s Eyes Fact or Fiction? Dr Brendan McCreesh optometrist at Brady Opticians discusses some common misconceptions around children’s vision.
Myth 1: Glasses might make my child's vision worse or give them a lazy eye Wearing glasses will not make your child’s eyes weak or dependent on glasses. In most cases, glasses can help to relieve strain on the eyes and to relax the eye muscles. Wearing glasses as recommended can help sight to develop normally and achieve its full potential. 2: I don’t need an eye examination for my child because their school offers vision screening School vision screening is a basic vision assessment, which aims to identify children with significant visual problems so they can be referred to the hospital for further investigation. A sight test at Brady Opticians is a more comprehensive check, which can pick up many conditions, including colour vision defects, problems with the development of 3D vision and any need for glasses or contact lenses. Myth 3: We don’t wear glasses, so our child will not need them either If parents aren’t glasses wearers it doesn’t automatically mean that their child won’t need glasses, as this is influenced by both genetics and environmental factors. Many genes are associated with visual problems.
Family history, ethnic background, environment (living indoors, in cities) and carrying out near tasks, such as screen use, have all been linked to the development of short-sightedness. Myth 4: I need to wait until my child can read before they can have their sight tested Children do not need to be able to read words, or even letters, in order to have a sight test. At Brady Opticians, we use other methods, such as pictures, to check how well your child can see. We recommend that children have a sight test around the age of three, so that conditions are picked up and treated early. After the first test it is a good idea to return every year, or as recommended by your optometrist. Myth 5: It is not safe for children to wear contact lenses The real issue is not age, but how responsible and motivated the child is to wear them. In my experience, children can make very good contact lens patients, and they’re a great option for boosting selfesteem. Contact lenses are excellent for playing sport as the wearer gets better ‘all round’ vision as there is no restriction with frames, and there is less risk of an accident or damaging a pair of glasses.

Sports Capital Grants Available for Schools Mr McHugh, Government Chief Whip and Minister for the Irish language, Gaeltacht and the Islands, has confirmed preparations are being made to open a new €40million Sports Capital fund for applications from September 7th. “I have seen the transformation in a community when Sports Capital investment is secured. Only two weeks ago we were turning the sod for a new pitch thanks to a €90,000 grant for Naomh Padraig CLG in Lifford. There are many, many others. “But the next round of Sports Capital grants has a significant difference. Thanks to reforms by this Government, schools will now also be able to apply for funding to
improve their facilities by partnering with local clubs. “And I strongly urge principals and teachers to consider their options for working with local clubs and sports organisation and to look hard at what investment they think they should secure for their school and make an application in the six weeks from Friday September 7th until October 19th.” The Sports Capital Programme is the Government’s primary vehicle for supporting the development of sports facilities and the purchase of non-personal sports equipment. The guide to making an application has been published on the Department’s website
sportscapitalprogramme.ie and a YouTube video is also available. Registrations will close at 5pm on Friday October 5th. The programme funds: Natural grass sports pitches, tracks and courts (including pitch drainage); floodlighting; artificial sports pitches, tracks, courts and multi-use games areas; security fencing, ball stop netting and goal posts; hurling walls/handball alleys; building or refurbishment of dressing rooms, showers and toilets; building or refurbishment of sports halls and gyms; non-personal equipment including lawn mowers and defibrillators; and any other capital projects that are clearly sporting in nature and that will increase participation in sport or improve performance.

There is nothing the matter with me. I’m as healthy as I can be. I have arthritis in both my knees And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze. The moral is this, as my tale I unfold, That for you and me who are growing old, It’s better to say “I’m fine” with a grin Than to let folks know the shape we are in. How do I know that my youth is all spent? Well, my “get up and go” has got up and went. But I really don’t mind when I think with a grin Of all the grand places my “get up” has been. Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said; But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed With my ears in the drawer, my teeth in a cup, My eyes on the table until I wake up. ’Ere sleep overtakes me, I say to myself, “Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf?” When I was young my slippers were red, I could kick my heels over my head. I get up each morning and dust off my wits And pick up the paper and read the obits. If my name is still missing, I know I’m not dead So I fix me some breakfast and go back to bed.

A move for the 9% VAT rate to be increased to 13½% has been mooted in recent weeks and has been met with much criticism from tourism providers. Hoteliers have insisted that the 9% VAT rate remains essential to the sector. Paul Diver, chairperson of the Donegal branch of the Irish Hoteliers Federation told The Eye that it would be disastrous for Donegal. “With Brexit very much alive and sterling 25% weaker than previous years Donegal is already suffering. While the Minister is basing the figures on Dublin hotels, rural Ireland can not be compared with these statistics. The tourism product is very important to this county and to rural Ireland, it is one of the main employers and employs 7,500 people in the sector here in Donegal. I would be very hopeful that the rural TDs will persuade the minister to see sense. The Northern market has collapsed and the Wild Atlantic Way has been very good to the county but we cannot become complacent. On a positive note the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar a few months ago indicated a willingness to retain the 9% rate saying reversing the reduction would be a mistake,” Paul said. The reduced VAT rate of 9% applies to certain goods and services including: hotels and restaurants, hot take-away food and hot drinks, admissions to cinemas, theatres, musical performances, museums, art galleries or exhibitions, hairdressing services, some printed matter including newspapers and magazines and amusement services. The rate was lowered from 13½% during the height of the recession to boost hospitality and tourism which was then vital in sustaining growth of the tourism sector in this country.

Cannonball Run set for Donegal this Friday
This Friday Donegal Town will be treated to the Cannonball Road Trip which is the largest organized trip of its kind in Europe. This exciting motoring and social event which celebrates its 10th anniversary will see a cavalcade of over 200 of the world’s top marque cars circle the Diamond at approx 2 o’clock. A large crowd is expected in town and the cavalcade will blaze up Main Street for a pitstop at the new Supermac’s Plaza and Donegal Town Service Station who are one of the sponsors for the Donegal Town trip. Ken Foley, Director of the New Plaza at Drumlonagher, told The Eye, “We are delighted that the Cannonball Road Trip is coming to Donegal and stopping off with us, I encourage people to come along and view the cars, there will be lots of photo opportunities and you never know who you might bump into!”

New Playground for Dunkineely NS Donegal TD and Minister Joe McHugh has announced funding of almost €185,000 for several community projects under the Clár programme.
“I am delighted to be able to announce this continued investment in our schools in Donegal and the focus in this latest round of funding is on play areas and is guaranteed to make a difference in the everyday life of youngsters,” Mr McHugh said.
“Communities benefit hugely from the Clár funding programme and this is the second time this year we have been able to bring this kind of good news about safety measures and money for playgrounds to teachers, parents and youngsters. “Five schools are benefitting on this occasion including €49,500 on a new playground at Dunkineely National School.”

DUNKINEELY RECYCLING REQUEST Dunkineely Community Hall Committee have asked the Council to remove the recycling bins permanently due to the ongoing dumping issue. The nearest recycling facilities are in Donegal Town (on the left on the way into the Council offices) and Killybegs on the Shore Road. If there is anyone who can offer an alternative place to relocate them it would be of great service to the local community to keep this facility in Dunkineely.

Home cooking with Sian ONE POT TWO BEEF DINNERS
(SERVES 8 ADULTS)
One pot wonders make the task of family cooking so much easier. Clever cooks double a recipe whenever possible and simply reheat the second time around. But why be satisfied with a reheat when in a jiffy you can deliver a metamorphosis of a meal? ONE POT BEEF DINNER • 1kg Stewing Steak cut into 2.5cm chunks • 3 tblsp plain flour • Seasoning: 2 tsps paprika pepper; 1tblsp dried parsley; 1 tblsp mixed herbs • 2 tblsp rapeseed oil • 3 medium onions (diced finely) • 3 stalks of celery (sliced very thinly) • 4 carrots ( diced roughly) • 3 beef stock cubes • 8 -10 waxy potatoes (cut in half) • Water • 2 handfuls of peas or beans Method 1. In a large bowl, mix the stewing steak with the flour, seasoning, spice and herbs. 2. Heat the oil in a large heavy based saucepan. 3. Fry the onions for 2 minutes, add the beef and any excess flour, stir and fry on medium heat until all the beef is saturated in the oil. 4. Add the rest of the vegetables except for the peas or beans and potatoes. Cover with water to be about 2 inches above the meat and vegetables. Stir in crumbled beef stock cubes. 5. Bring to boil, put on the lid and gently stew for 2½ hours, stirring occasionally and making sure the base isn’t burning. 6. Add the waxy potatoes, making sure there is enough liquid to cover the potatoes, leave to cook gently for 20 minutes. Add the peas or beans and cook for a further 10 minutes. 7. Taste and season as required. MEAL 1 – ONE POT BEEF DINNER 1. Serve half of the delicious ‘one pot beef dinner’ in warm bowls, making sure to serve all the cooked waxy potatoes. 2. Garnish with chopped parsley. Store the remaining dinner in the fridge once it has cooled. MEAL 2 – BEEF POT PIES 1. Divide the cold one pot beef between 4 oven proof containers, top with mashed potatoes, and grated cheese or cover with home made shortcrust pastry or shop bought puff pastry making diagonal scores in the puff pastry and brush with beaten egg. 2. Bake in a pre heated oven 200°C or Gas 6 for 20 – 25 minutes or until beef is bubbling hot. A food probe is the best indicator of food temperature. 75⁰C being the magic number. 3. Serve immediately with extra portions of vegetables and a carbohydrate of your choice. Tip - When you chop the onions and celery finely, they will almost dissolve into the sauce, making the most delicious sauce and disguising them, which is always good if a little person in the family is picky. Gardening with Emer REPAIRING YOUR LAWNS Here we are, back at September already! The days are shorter, the evenings cooler and we need to start thinking about preparing our gardens for whatever the winter might bring. The excellent summer showed us how well some plants can perform with extra heat. I have heard many say they have never seen their roses look as good and others are enjoying their biggest fruit harvest in years. On the other side, many of our old reliables suffered due to the prolonged dry spell. We were lucky here in Donegal that we were blessed with rain a little earlier than the rest of the country but there was still plenty of damage done to our lawns before it came. Grass is shallow rooted so once the surface of the soil had dried out our lawns stopped growing and went into survival mode. Many are recovering nicely but would benefit greatly from a feed to strengthen them before winter. Removing moss
and weeds from the lawn would also aid with its recovery. September is the ideal month to carry out these tasks. There is good heat and moisture in the soil to allow for reseeding any bare patches too. Raking fallen leaves off the lawn prevents the grass from being smothered underneath and helps keep mould and fungus from spreading. You should also raise the height on your mower for the last cut of the season to ensure your grass is at its strongest going in to the winter. Mystery Solved!
Mushrooms and Toadstools sprout on the Bank Walk
The mystery of the metal box found bolted to the side of Tirchonaill Bridge was revealed this week. Senior Road Engineer Mark Sweeney told The Eye that there was a lot of speculation about the contents and much to the disappointment of locals when the box was opened it was the air valve of the water main spur. Mark Sweeney went on to confirm that the work on directing the services out of the bridge is continuing and hopefully the demolition will begin next week.
This year has produced an abundance of varieties of mushrooms and toadstools as seen on a recent visit to the Bank Walk in Donegal Town. A local retailer who is a dab hand in the garden says “it’s a result of the very warm temperatures we experienced earlier in the year.” Remember - these may be poisonous and are not edible!

…continued from Issue 27 It was now mid afternoon so when we had attended to our heavenly duties we wheeled our bicycles into the graveyard and found a suitable old gravestone lying flat on the ground. The names of the dead and the dates of their deaths worn away by weather, we somehow felt that to sit down on this gravestone and have our lunch would in no way be sacrilegious as we could not even read the names of the long departed souls whose earthly remains were in repose beneath us. Lunch finished, Paul checked our time on his father’s pocket watch loaned to him for use on the day. We were doing fine time wise but now came the hard part. We girded our loins and proceeded to take the long trek to Drimarone. The road was rough and there appeared to be no respite from the climb, no chance to just sit on the saddle, freewheel legs swinging aimlessly until we reached another hill. We strained and pedalled for what appeared to be an interminable amount of time. We had to stop and rest, we checked our map and even though we felt a little bit lost and a small bit of panic we pressed on and knew Drimarone could not be too far off according to my father’s map and he was a man to be trusted. After what appeared to be an age we arrived at our destination, Drimarone Chapel, so like our own church standing there looking bravely down on the valley beneath and yet so far away from home. Prayers said and full indulgences gained for ourselves, our families and all of the residents of the village we felt very content and happy within ourselves.

Our work was done and it would be only when the villagers moved on to meet their Creator in that ‘Final Day of Judgement’ would they know that two little boys many years before had shortened their stay in purgatory because of these Holy Year Indulgences so many years ago. The day was wearing on so we finished our sandwiches, put our milk bottles and sandwich wrappers in the bicycle basket. Leaning across the handlebars we discussed our long trek up to Drimarone which we now knew intimately and no longer would it be just a place-name. We now had a special affinity for these far away churches in our parish and would look on the roads into the mountains as we would old friends. Just as we were about to saddle up for the journey home which according to my father’s map was about eight miles, mostly all downhill, we met a shepherd with about fifty sheep. We stood and watched as he and his sheepdog kept the flock together and then the dog gently guided the last sheep through a gate and into a field. It was the first time I had seen a sheepdog work with his master and respond to the little whistles with such precision until all the sheep were safely put away. This would be another story to tell as we did not have sheep in Mountcharles and only saw them on Fair Days. “Aren’t you the Sergeant’s son,” the shepherd asked, “and you are Paul Gallagher’s son,” he said to Paul. “I often see ye when I am in about the town”. We did not give him our reason for being so far from home, nor did he ask. “You have a good run home now except a
wee bit of a climb at Anthony Kelly’s brae but it’s nearly all downhill.” We left our goodbyes with this kindly mountain man and cycled down to Mountcharles. It was after 4pm and we had to get home, washed, changed and surplice and soutane on arm to be ready to clerk at rosary and benediction. We sped down the mountainside singing ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’ a top twenty tune at the time for Frankie Lane. We made short work of Anthony Kelly’s brae and as we breasted the hill at Glencoagh, laid out before us was our tiny village with a lazy pall of smoke above it on this beautiful midsummer evening. Everything looked well in the world. Xenophon, the Greek General, when leading his vanquished army in desperation looked for the sea which would guarantee their escape to safety. Suddenly the forward scouts shouted “Thalatta, Thalatta” - “The Sea, The Sea”. The joy and relief that must have flooded through his army must have been something akin to the joy and relief experienced by two very tired little boys as they freewheeled their dusty bicycles down Glencoagh and into the Main Street of the village happy in the knowledge that at least we had done a good day’s work in helping to save the souls of all of the villagers and we would be rewarded in Heaven.

Deputy Pringle said, “The business community, staff and wider public of Ballybofey and Stranorlar are concerned about the ongoing road works in the towns. Many businesses have had to cut staff hours which has a knock-on effect on those staff being able to make a living and shop locally, with some businesses reporting up to 35% drop in custom. “From the meeting [with the Senior Executive Engineer of the National Roads Design Office in Donegal] it was clear that everyone needs to know when the exact end dates are and I have been given assurances that this will be communicated directly to all affected traders by way of leaflet drop and more regular updates directly to those
affected. “There will be some disruption which is inevitable, but I feel we reached a consensus with the NRDO that works must finish up as quickly as possible so as to minimise the impact on business. “Some works in evening times and night are being considered in terms of final layer of tar but this will be near the end of the works and can be completed quicker. “I will continue to liaise with the businesses, the NRDO and Donegal County Council, to monitor progress and also myself and Alan McMenamin are looking at other aspects that we can explore to alleviate the impact.”

The total raised from this year’s “Point10k” was €2,300, which was divided equally between the two beneficiaries - the Daragh Daly Rehabilitation Fund and Bruckless Community Reroofing Project. Our U13 girls got off to a great start to their season as they travelled to play Glenfin on Friday. UNDERAGE: Our U14s were unfortunate to lose to Glenswilly in the Shield Final last Friday. Well done to the team and the Management on their great performance. U13s got the League off to a great start on Monday with a win against Bundoran. SENIORS: This weekend ended the League competition for the Seniors. They played Naomh Columba in both Reserves and Seniors but unfortunately lost on this occasion. We now play Naomh Columba in Glencolmcille this coming weekend in the first round of the Championship. Best of luck to the team and management.

The 2018/19 season has commenced following some good off-field work in the summer. A very successful golf classic was held at Murvagh, many thanks to all involved. Donegal Town hosted a touring Athy RFC side on the 18th of August – the perfect opportunity for newly appointed management team of Jimmy Brogan and Lance Feaver to assess the players on offer for the season ahead. Donegal Town F.C. SUNDAY TEAM: The Sunday Team booked their place in the Donegal Town Area Final of the Brian McCormick Cup with a convincing victory over St. Catherine’s at the Hospital Field. After a largely uneventful first half, the teams went in level at the break although the Town had a great chance from the spot but the effort was well saved by Catherine’s stopper Michael Mullen. The boys were much better in the second half and took the lead through James Kerrigan who tapped in from close range to finish off a good team move. Declan Brown whipped in a great ball which was headed home by David Graham to double the lead shortly after. The game was effectively over as a contest minutes later when quick thinking from Town 'keeper John Leonard put Ronan McHugh through on goal. McHugh beat
his man well before selflessly squaring the ball to Graham who made no mistake from close range. The lads had several chances to extend their lead with Graham, Gary Ward and McHugh all going close. Next up is Cappry Rovers away this weekend in the first game of the new league season. EYE on SPORT Donegal Golfers Supporting Crumlin Children’s Hospital The annual Crumlin golf classic held at Donegal Golf Club earlier this summer has raised a magnificent €47,400. “Hole in One” winners Margaret Johnston and Aine Enright with Lady Captain Mary Walsh
Lady Winners in July & August Donegal Golf Club Murvagh Lady Captain Mary Walsh presented the prizes to the lady winners of the Club competitions played at Murvagh during the months of July and August at the club night following the Donegal Bay RNLI scramble on Friday 31st August. She thanked all the sponsors on behalf of the ladies for their continued support and gave a special welcome to sponsors Peter McDonnell and Dorothy Woods of the Abbey and Central Hotels.
The lady Captain congratulated all the winners and made special mention of the Hole in One winners during the months, Margaret Johnston who had a ‘hole in one’ on the 13th hole and new player Aine Enright who had a ‘hole in one’ at the 5th hole. She congratulated the Maire O’Donnell team who are now through to the final and will meet the Letterkenny ladies later in the month.

Golf Club Notes
Mixed Open Stableford, Monday 27th August: We had a few familiar names on the podium for the final open competition of the week with Jaden Mgbam (12) again coming out on top with a score of 35 pts. Fair play to Jaden for some magnificent performances recently and losing 5 shots in the past fortnight. Two of our successful Junior League players battled it out for the runnersup position with John Meehan (07) taking 2nd with 34 pts ahead of Justin Coughlin (07) with 33 pts. The Gross was once again won by Billy Madden (06) with 32 gross pts. Singles Stableford 1st & 2nd September sponsored by Kelly's Sales and Services. The winner of Sunday's competition was Peter Teague (15) with 41 pts. 2nd was Kieran Mullin (11) with 40 pts and 3rd was Jaden Mgbam (11) on 39 pts (bot). Conal Cooke took the Gross prize with 33 pts. Next Week’s Competition sponsored by Thursday Specials (Singles Stableford).

A Glimpse of Pettigo in 1831 “The town of Pettigo is situated part in County Donegal and part in County Fermanagh, within three miles of the celebrated pilgrimage of Lough Derg, and has a population of about 500. The places of worship are the Church of Ireland, a Roman Catholic Chapel, Presbyterian Church, and Wesleyan Church. It has a good market, held every Monday, and a good monthly fair on the 20th of each month. The Great Northern Railway have a very compact and neat station adjoining the town It possesses corn and flax mills, built with all modern improvements.
