Pearse Doherty TD will lobby for Spire funding

Last Monday afternoon Pearse Doherty TD along with Cllr Noel Jordan visited the Church of Ireland in Donegal Town to meet with Glebe Wardens David Henderson and Gordon Robinson, Treasurer Justin Irwin and Select Vestry member Nigel Elvin to view the ongoing project of restoring the tower and spire. Pearse Doherty told the Eye that he was invited to view the structure and ongoing work and he pledged his support to the application for funding. “There is very much need for this work and I have raised it with the Minister and contacted the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht about securing funding. It is not until you stand here on the church grounds and look around 360° that you see what is really here. I will be bringing all this back

to the Minister and also our local County Councillor, Noel Jordan, will be raising the matter for funding with Donegal County Council”, the TD said. Archdeacon David Huss commented that he was happy that Pearse Doherty took the time to visit the church project and pledge his support. “The local support has been great and to date the amount raised is €80,000 of the €150,000 needed.” He also confirmed that they have applied for funding and contacted all the TDs with regard to receiving central government funding. Meanwhile the fundraising is continuing and a scrap metal collection is underway over at George Irwin’s yard. The estimated time of completion for the present project is three more weeks.

New Library still on track

Last May Minister Joe McHugh announced a substantial investment package for a new multi use community building for Donegal Town and The Eye can now confirm that the plans for this development are at an advanced stage.

The proposed new building will provide, a quality space for a public library facility with associated public space, there will be a modern space for a community project focussed on the development and support of the youth in the area, the centre will also provide a centrally located enterprise hub with a focus on IT based businesses thus helping to create job opportunities in the area and boost local community confidence. This in turn will encourage a positive environment and ecosystem for strong community development and job creation.

The current library premises is located in the Old Tech building on the Killybegs Road and is open part-time 14 hours per week. It is located on an elevated site and not easily accessible to people of restricted mobility. The proposed community building will be a great facility for the local area and a place for people to gather and develop skills and interests.

Seven Strategic Towns Local Area Plan now in effect

The “Seven Strategic Towns” Local Area Plan came into effect on Monday last week.

The Plan was adopted by Donegal County Council on 23rd July 2018 and is a consolidated local area plan for An Clochán Liath / Dungloe, Ballybofey - Stranorlar, Ballyshannon, Bridgend, Carndonagh, Donegal Town and Killybegs for the period 2018 to 2024.

The new plan which supersedes the County Donegal Development Plan 2012 – 2018 was adopted following an extensive public consultation process and sets out an overall strategy, land use and zoning objectives for the proper planning and sustainable development of the seven towns.

Council Seamus Neely said, “The timing is excellent in that this Plan was adopted shortly after the County Donegal Development Plan came into effect and also following the recent publication of the new National Planning Framework. This is a very important document and will have a key role in unlocking the strategic potential of these towns which will in turn contribute to the social, cultural, environmental and economic growth and well being of the entire county”.

Copies of the Plan are available on the County Council’s website and will also be made available for inspection at Council Offices and public libraries across the county.

Eddie Mulligan is pictured standing at back right Thousands of people from across the 33 parishes in Donegal travelled to events in Dublin and Knock over the weekend for Pope Francis’s visit to Ireland. Daniel O’Donnell along with a number of other singers and dancers from the county entertained the Pope at the different venues. Barnesmore man, Eddie Mulligan was honoured to be one of these. He is a member of the Choir of Ages who sang ‘Forever Young’ in Croke Park on Saturday evening at the Festival of Families. The Pope arrived in Croke Park to a rapturous welcome from more than 80,000 people and The Choir of Ages was one of a number of choirs who sang. Talking to ‘The Eye’ Eddie told how they arrived in Croke Park by bus at 10.30am and were shown to the corporate box in the Hogan Stand where they were treated with great courtesy.

“On arrival we were delighted to be informed that we would sing in the innercircle area with the Pope. This meant we were within twenty yards of the Pontiff and were privileged to be one of two choirs in this area with all the dignitaries and families taking part.

“It was a glorious day from start to finish.

The sun broke through and even though we were given rain capes we didn’t have to use them. There were two rehearsals during the day, the first with the orchestra and then with the production camera crew. Patrick Bergin was singing when the Pope arrived around 6.30pm and continued singing even though the entire park was ecstatic. It was exhilarating. We watched the Pope travel through the crowd on the big screen until he arrived beside us. Emotions were high, everybody in the stadium was clapping and cheering. When the Pope left the crowd dispersed quite quickly and we waited on our bus which departed for home around 10.30pm,” Eddie concluded.

Why the Queen Elizabeth returned

The Cunard cruise liner MS Queen Elizabeth revisited Killybegs last week.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the boat was unable to go to Stornaway in Scotland as scheduled after a round trip to Iceland.

After ensuring a berth was available, the Captain made the decision to come to Killybegs above all other ports he could have chosen. On the previous visit in July this year both passengers and crew were very impressed with Killybges.

The Captain was more than complimentary to ships agents Sinbad Marine, the pilot and the overall professionalism of everyone involved.

The feedback from the passengers was generous to a fault. Some of the attractions mentioned in particular were Bunglass, Donegal Tweed, Hanna Hats, the blanket bogs and Yeats’ Grave among others.

MS Queen Victoria and MS Queen Elizabeth were the first Cunard liners ever to visit Killybegs. Many people and groups locally have worked diligently in order to make this happen, for a number of years. In addition to Cunard vessels, Killybegs has had a very successful season of cruise ship visits and is looking forward to another busy year in 2019.

The feedback from all these visits has been very favourable for the entire region, with tours going from the ships all around the county and adjacent areas. Cunard is considered to be the top of the list as far as cruising is concerned and the prestige of their visits is hoped to increase the number of other cruise ship companies who will include Killybegs on their itineraries.

Five more cruise ships will call to Killybegs during September, the first of which will be MS Ocean Majesty on Friday 7th September.

Drimalost welcomes Patrick Meighan Legendary Saxophone Player

Throughout his career Patrick has performed with many musical legends including Sammy Davis Jr., Vic Damone, The Four Tops, The Temptations and the Jackson Five but his trip to Donegal saw him hook up with a musical legend of a different kind, Donegal fiddle player and cousin Danny Meehan. The two musicians accompanied

by Danny’s sister Rosabelle quickly set about making up for lost time. The walls of the old house in Drimalost that have hosted many a musical extravaganza over the years bore witness to their first fiddle and sax combo with an eclectic mix of Traditional Irish, Jazz and Easy Listening. A great night’s entertainment concluded with a song from Danny’s brother Kevin and the visitors departed with a promise that it wouldn’t be as long again.

Danny Meehan on fiddle and Patrick Meighan on saxophone perform at the ancestral home in Drimalost Last week legendary saxophonist Patrick Meighan came to Donegal to visit the home of his great grandfather Bartholomew Constantine Meighan in Drimalost, near Mountcharles. Bartholomew left our shores for Pittsburgh and later Chicago in the early 1870’s returning home only once after he left, making Patrick the first of his line to visit Drimalost in over 100 years.

Patrick recently retired from his post as Artist-Professor of Saxophone at Florida State University which he held since 1974 and was returning from a performance and workshop in Wolszytn in Poland when he made the trip. He has performed as a soloist and ensemble recitalist throughout the world and has made many appearances on TV, radio and at music festivals.

SIPTU calls for improved Childcare in Budget The SIPTU “Big Start” Campaign has called on Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone to develop a ‘new deal’ for childcare.

SIPTU activist Aisling O’Rourke stated, “this week Minister Zappone rightly said

that parents are paying too much for childcare; parents are struggling with the second highest childcare fees in the OECD. However simply increasing subsidies as proposed won’t make childcare affordable or address the fundamental issues in the sector.” The recent Early Childhood Ireland survey advised that 49% of services were finding it difficult to retain staff. The sector had a staff turnover rate of 28.4% in the last 12 months.

SIPTU Sector Organiser Martin O’Rourke stated, “Ireland needs a new deal for childcare, one that delivers for parents, children and providers. The government currently invests just 0.2% of GDP in

SIPTU Activist Kirsty Toner stated, “Qualified childcare workers are paid on average just €10.88 per hour, with many on the minimum wage and/or precarious contracts. We need fundamental reform of the current childcare system, one that puts high quality for children at its heart.”

The Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., has announced that he has allocated €4.25 million to a new Fodder Import Support measure.

“In light of the recent severe drought conditions and their impact on an already difficult fodder situation, I am introducing a support measure contributing to the cost of importing fodder from abroad.

This additional commitment to securing adequate fodder supplies builds on a range of supports already put in place,” the Minister said.

This measure is being introduced to reduce the cost to farmers of imported forage (hay, silage, haylage, alfalfa etc.) from outside the island of Ireland. The measure will operate through the Co-operatives/ registered importers and will cover forage imported from 12th August 2018 to 31st December 2018 and will be subject to EU State Aid (de-minimis) rules.

The Minister stressed that while the measure will operate through the Co-operatives / registered importers, the actual beneficiaries will be farmers who need supplies of fodder.

Minister Creed added that, “As was the case in the earlier Fodder Import measure of last spring, participation will be straightforward for the farmer who contacts a participating Co-op or registered importer and purchases fodder. My Department will subsequently reimburse the Co-op / importer with a contribution towards the cost of transport.”

Application forms and terms and conditions will be available shortly.

GLAS Adjustments for Fodder

The Minister also welcomed the European Commission’s agreement to proposed adjustments to the GLAS scheme for this year in response to the current fodder shortages.

The Commission signalled that the Irish request will be considered for formal approval. It is proposed that the measures will be effective from Saturday 1st September and this will be confirmed in advance subject to all remaining procedures being completed.

The Minister said that, “These measures will provide a valuable extra source of fodder, complementing the range of initiatives I have already introduced this summer.

My Department will confirm when the procedures to formally agree the measures are concluded as soon as possible. I will continue to monitor the fodder situation closely and work with all stakeholders until we have successfully addressed the issues around fodder availability.”

The Minister concluded by saying that “The measure I am announcing today will provide a valuable extra source of fodder, complementing the range of initiatives I have already introduced this summer focused on maximising the production of fodder from our own land resources. I will continue to monitor the fodder situation closely and work with all stakeholders until we have successfully addressed the issues around fodder availability.”

GARDENING TALK - Donegal Garden Society will host a talk by Esker Daffodils from Omagh.

Entitled ‘Starting from Scratch’ it gives a potted history of how they got into gardening and eventually finished up where they are today breeding and growing Irish daffodils.

Save Our P.O.” Broadcast Last Wednesday morning the Ocean FM team arrived in Dunkineely where Niall Delaney and Margaret Carr Flynn broadcast from a packed McLaughlin’s Bar. The purpose of the show was for the public to highlight the need for the Post Office to be retained in the village and to let the powers that be know that the local community, businesses and professionals are not going to stand by and watch An Post and the Government strip them of this much needed service. The Kennedy family who ran the post office for so many years were commended and wished every happiness on their retirement.

Many speakers, including Roger Meehan, Kerrill O’Donnell, Janet Deane, Terence McGinley, Michael McNelis, Maureen Feeney, Eileen White, John “the Barber”, Christy Kelly, local representatives Cllr Noel Jordan, Cllr Niamh Kennedy, Cllr Michael Naughton, as well as Fr. James Sweeney, Rev Des Davis and Dr McManus, spoke passionately about the importance of retaining the Post Office in Dunkineely.

The need for investment in rural Ireland was highlighted as everybody cannot live in big towns and cities. Locals recalled how Dunkineely once was a vibrant town with a bank, post office, four grocery shops, two butchers, a shoe shop, a hardware store, a chemist, seven pubs, a mart and a Garda station. Slowly all is being taken away from the people, the young people are moving away with two of their young footballers heading away to Australia in the coming days.

Senior residents told of how going to the post office was a social occasion, businesses commented on their customers collecting their money in the post office and then treating themselves in the village before going home, should it be a haircut, a fish and chips, a wee drink or getting their weekly groceries and meat - it is all so important to everybody.

The local GP told Ocean FM that rural Ireland is diminishing and how he had to fight to keep the Health Centre open when he came to Dunkineely and the support he

He said that he uses the services of the post office himself every day. Rev Davis spoke of his disappointment with the government making this announcement and then going into summer recess. Ann White, a former telephonist in Dunkineely post office, said that Dunkineely is a commuter town for Donegal and with all the new jobs coming to Abbott there are not enough houses or rented accommodation for the workers, but these could be provided in Dunkineely.

Irish Water, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, will begin works in September to replace approximately 40km of ageing water mains across 13 priority sections in Co. Donegal. The work is expected to take around 14 months to complete.

Replacing these ageing water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and help ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses throughout the county. It will also lead to improved water quality by removing old cast iron pipes from the network and replacing them with modern plastic pipes which will reduce the risk of contamination.

Locally areas covered by the improvements will include Rossnowlagh, Ballyshannon and Bundoran West End. In Ballyshannon the project will include the removal of 116 backyard services and will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the street/road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply.

Residents and businesses will be notified ahead of works commencing.

Gardening with Emer TEXTURE IN THE GARDEN If you have read about garden design or watched a gardening programme, you may have heard of how you should include ‘texture’ in your garden among other elements such as height, depth, movement, fragrance, colour, sound and repetition. Most of these are selfexplanatory but how do we get texture into our gardens and why is it so important?

Automatically, you would think that texture refers to the feel of a plant. It can be nice to have wispy grasses or feathery foliage at hand height along a path so you can run your fingers through them as you pass, however this is not what is meant by texture when it comes to garden design.

Many people veer towards a monoculture of low growing waxy evergreens as they are hardy and keep their leaves year round; however without texture diversity they blend into one another and can look bland overall.

Texture refers to the overall appearance, size and density of the plant and its leaves. Plant textures range from fine to coarse and everything in between. For example, picture the airy foliage of Fennel or Cosmos in

…continued from Issue 26 So my mode of transport was more or less secure even though a man’s bicycle with a crossbar would be preferable. Paul being the eldest son of the Gallagher family would have first call on their family bicycle. As the great day grew closer I asked my father to plot out our itinerary for us. I had been to Frosses for my confirmation but had never been to Ardaghey, and Drimarone was away up into the mountains and we only knew of it by name. My father, because of his job as Sergeant, knew all of the mountain roads in our part of South Donegal so he drew a detailed map of our route.

Ardaghey was first call, then Frosses, and then on to the big climb to Drimarone a distance of seven or eight miles mostly uphill. In reality we felt we were embarking on a very long journey on roads we had never seen or heard of before and who knows what dangers we might encounter on the way. In any case ‘Ilea Jacta Erat’ ‘The Die Was Cast’. Our appointed day arrived, a good Sunday morning in June.

We had served Mass and nonchalantly announced to the other altar boys our intentions to do the four churches that day and that we fully intended to be back and see them all in that same sacristy for Sunday evening devotions and benediction at seven o’clock. Fr Rowan pronounced us as two great lads and maybe, God willing, we might wind up with vocations and have our own parishes in later life.

Despite our recently acquired missionary zeal I might add that the good priest’s pronouncements had never even entered my head. Straight home after Mass I had my breakfast, checked the bicycle tyres, checked the bicycle pump, put my bicycle clips on the bottom legs of my recently acquired long pants, the better to keep the oil on the bicycle chain from destroying the turn ups on my new flannel trousers.

Two egg sandwiches and the usual blue Milk of Magnesia bottle filled with milk were to provide sustenance on the way. My sister’s bicycle had a wicker carrier basket attached to the handlebars. This basket I felt was a bit sissyish but as it could not be removed I tried to ignore this blemish on my manhood and anyway it was handy for carrying both of our lunches. We parked our bicycles outside our now totally empty chapel, said our first set of seven Our Fathers, seven Hail Marys and seven Glory Be’s, made known our invocation on behalf of all of the village’s residents

who were now peacefully going about their mid Sunday morning business.

We made our way back to our bicycles leaning against the Chapel Porch, put our bicycle clips on again and headed up the village on a road less travelled to Ardaghey chapel. Neither of us had been to Ardaghey before but it was all laid out before us on Daddy’s map. Down Drimconnor Hill was easy, then we pressed on along the flat through the Milltown and on until we crossed the bridge over the River Eany as it made its way into Inver Bay. Stopping we leaned over the bridge to see the black swirling water as it eddied around the stone arches.

This was our first sight of the Eany whose source we knew of and could see from our back gardens. The Grey Mare’s Tail deep up in the Bluestacks is aptly named as it cascades down from a lake

deep in the mountain until it meets the Atlantic in a gentle flow often rich in salmon at Inver. We pressed on, took a right turn as indicated and there on the hill as our map predicted was Ardaghey chapel.

We knelt at the back of a church which looked uncannily like our own, said our prayers and gained our indulgences.

Outside the temptation was to take our lunch early as there were a few pangs of hunger starting to make themselves felt but we knew there was still the greater part of our crusade in front of us so we studied our map and headed off back a part of the road we had come and then branched off to Frosses.

I had been to Frosses once before for my confirmation a year earlier. We had been told the Holy Ghost, as he was called at the time, would descend on us and somewhere deep down we both agreed that our latest religious zeal was a product of the intervention of the said Holy Spirit into our very beings as witnessed on our confirmation day.

Frosses is a strange little village with its row of houses on one side and the church and graveyard on the other. It was always the subject of a local joke about “The people on one side of the street not speaking to the people on the other side”.

Tea and Entertainment fit for “High Kings” at McCafferty’s Barn following Drumhome Heritage Walk

The weather was not on our side on Friday 17th August for the 3rd Annual Drumhome Heritage Society Walk to Ard Fothaidh, Glasbolie. The rain did not dampen the spirits of all those (approx. 95 people) who joined on us our adventure. The walk was led by Dr. Brian Lacey who gave very interesting insights into the Ballymagroarty Monastery, Colmcille’s connections to the area, McGonigle’s Fort/Ard Fothaidh and Drumhome Monastery. The Drumhome Heritage Society are very thankful to so many people who put in a huge effort to make this event such a success. Big thanks to all the land owners along the track especially Tony McCafferty for allowing us to walk to the Fort and so generously letting us have the use of his great barn for refreshments and music after the walk. A sincere thanks to our neighbours for all their good will and co-operation with this event.

It would not have happened without all your help.

A massive thanks to all willing hands who worked over the past number of weeks to clear the track of brambles and overgrown hedges and grass and made it such a delightful approach to the fort for all the walkers.

Entertainment and tea was served up in McCafferty’s Barn following our Heritage Week 2018 Walk. The damp conditions outdoors were soon forgotten with the wonderful entertainment and plenty of hot tea/coffee, scones and home bakes served up in our pop-up rustic tea house.

The new volunteer group have gone live in conjunction with the national Ambulance Service to assist in medical emergency situations.

More people flying to Donegal There has been a 7% increase in the number of passengers flying to Donegal from Dublin on the Aer Lingus Regional route over the past six months.

They will assist in emergencies between 7pm to 7am pending the arrival of an Emergency Ambulance.

The service is operated by Stobart Air who also provide a Dublin to Kerry link and this route has also seen its numbers increase over the same period.

This follows on just weeks after a similar group was launched in Ardara.

A community first responder scheme operates whereby the ambulance service, upon receiving the 112 or 999 call, in addition to the usual ambulance/EMS personnel, simultaneously dispatches a rostered on-call community based first responder. A new defibrillator has been installed outside Sheerin’s Londis in Mountcharles for public use 24/7.

Figures also reveal that 25% of passengers that use the Dublin to Carrickfinn service are travelling on business, while 23% who use the route are on a day trip.

The Dublin to Donegal service has acquired a new aircraft due to Stobart Air having invested €14 million in its fleet.

A day to remember

Having been privileged to attend the Papal Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on Sunday, 26th August, I can confirm that it was no ‘lark in the Park’! It was indeed a pilgrimage involving walking up to 14 km on a damp, rainy blustery day. However, it was most rewarding to be present for this Mass with Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church and a constant proponent of peace and justice, especially for the marginalised in our society.

Travelling from Donegal required an early start, 5.45 a.m. for myself and very many others. That was the easy part! We then had queues and more queues and seemingly endless walking before we arrived at our allotted space around 1.30 p.m. and a large number of people were still arriving during most of the Mass, probably having encountered difficulties in accessing the Park.

Before the start of Mass, Pope Francis spent a half hour being driven through the crowd which, of course, caused great excitement and must have been a big headache for those providing his security.

He said ‘it was their daily witness of fidelity to Christ and to each other that won hearts yearning for a word of grace and helped give birth to the culture of Europe’ and ‘that witness remains a perennial source of spiritual and missionary renewal for God's holy and faithful people’. his homily saying: ‘as we now prepare to go our separate ways, let us renew our fidelity to the Lord and to the vocation he has given to each of us.’ Taking up the prayer of Saint Patrick let each of us repeat with joy “Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me. Travelling home, I think I speak for many, in saying while our journey really was a pilgrimage, we were happy and felt privileged to have been able to attend such a momentous event and encouraged to take the Pope’s words to heart in striving to follow in the footsteps of Jesus in treating all as our brothers and sisters as He would have us treat them.

Turas Mass at St. Peter’s Lake On Thursday 16th August a large crowd gathered to celebrate the annual Turas Mass at St. Peter’s Lake, Mountcharles. Fr Patsy McDermott celebrated the Mass and thankfully there was no rain or midges. While there were a lot of locals in attendance there were some visitors from outside the area and the tradition of The Turas at St. Peter’s Lake is popular among young and old. Helen Meehan gave a very interesting talk on the history of the Turas and Patrick Dorrian played the bagpipes.

Underage - Unfortunately our U14 team lost to Four Masters on Friday despite a valiant effort.

There will be an U10 blitz on Saturday please support, volunteers welcome on the day.

Ladies - We wish our U13 girls well on Saturday in their game v Glenfin away to Glenfin.

Congratulations to Niamh Boyle and Catherine Campbell on receiving their Donegal LGFA awards. Well done to Eilish Ward, Michaela Breslin and the Donegal Ladies who did their county proud on Saturday.

Seniors It was a very competitive weekend for both seniors and reserves against Ardara.

We were unsuccessful at the reserve game but played well at senior level to achieve a draw.

Our Reserve Team play Termon on Tuesday at 7.30 pm in Termon and both teams face Naomh Columba on Saturday evening at home.

PRESENTATION TO DONEGAL TOWN HOSPICE CARE UNIT

Donegal Bay Cycling Club recently made a presentation of a cheque for €1500 to the Hospice Care Unit at Donegal Town Community Hospital from the proceeds of the Magee Donegal Bay Spring Sportive held earlier in the year. Club Chairperson Paul McGroary and Leisure Secretary Kevin McGlynn were on hand to make the presentation to Susan Rose and her hardworking team.

The Spring Sportive is widely regarded as one of the best cycle events in the Country and received recognition in 2017 by being voted as the Best Leisure Cycle event in Ulster by the Regional governing body Cycling Ulster. Donegal Bay Leisure Secretary Kevin McGlynn said, “The Sportive is going very well at the moment and is proving very popular with participants and whilst the event is not a fundraiser, the Club have committed to making a donation to a local charity/provider each year from the proceeds raised at the event.”

This year, the club agreed to make the donation to the Hospice Unit at Donegal Town Hospital. Donegal Bay Club Chairperson Paul McGroary said the club were delighted to make a contribution towards such an important local facility, “We all know of someone impacted by cancer and the Hospice Unit in Donegal Town is very important for the local community. Speaking from personal experience, my father spent time in the Hospice Unit and it was so much more convenient for family members and friends to visit him in Donegal Town, rather than having to travel to Letterkenny or elsewhere and the team in the hospital do such a fantastic job of looking after their patients. As a club we are only too happy to make a contribution.”

U17 Donegal Ladies Development Squad Well done to Beibhinn Reid and Dion Carr who played on Donegal U17 Development Squad in Dublin at the weekend - great to see Four Masters girls on county squads.

Four Masters U16s reach All County Division 1 League Final

Our U16 boys put in a strong display on Sunday evening 26th August in Newtowncunningham against Malin to qualify for the All County Division 1 League Final. Missing a few regular starters the lads opened brightly with points from play from Dermot Slevin and Shay Travers putting them two up after just three minutes. Malin were not about to let our boys have it all their own way and they struck for a goal in the fifth minute to give them a one point lead in the game. Ultan O’Grady then drew the sides level in the ninth minute and further points from Shay Travers (2) and Dermot Slevin were added to by a fine goal from Jamie Gorrell to give our boys a six point lead with ten minutes to the break. In this period our defenders had held Malin scoreless with Liam McLaughlin making a vital interception when Malin had a promising overlap in attack and Christopher Gallagher, Andrew Monahan and Diarmuid O’Domhnaill also working

Daragh Geary and Ultan O’Grady were on top in the middle of the park with the industrious Joe Leape and Jamie Gorrell working to great effect in the middle third.

In the the full forward line Carl McCarry and Mark Jordan were offering attacking options and winning ample possession to ensure chances were never far away.

Carl McCarry put on an exhibition of ball winning at full forward, and it was from one of his sliding catches followed by a deft hand pass that a shot at goal rebounded into the path of Dermot Slevin who finished to the net to leave a half time score of 2-07 to 1-00.

Shay Travers quickly settled the boys in the second half with two well taken points.

Both Senan Quinn and Frank Cornyn were also having a significant impact on proceedings with Senan Quinn scoring six minutes into the half and Frank Cornyn settling for a point when his goal bound shot was touched over by the outstretched hand of the Malin keeper. The defence also held strong, with Ross O’Keeney and Josh McCrea slotting seamlessly in when introduced, and the great defensive work on the night was exemplified by a diving block from Diarmuid O’Domhnaill denying a clear point scoring opportunity for Malin mid way through the second period. Up front saw the introduction of Ethan Potter and further points from Dermot Slevin and Shay Travers (2) saw our boys run out deserving 2-14 to 1-02 winners.

Termon now await in the final and no doubt Damien, Tony, Eamonn and the lads are looking forward to the county final and the chance to add further silverware to the southern title, and cap a fine season for these young players.

In spite of the inconsistent weather which ranged from dazzling sunshine to wet and windy "true links" conditions, we had a hugely successful mini-open week with some fabulous scoring recorded. Thanks to all our members and the high volume of visitors who played and a special mention for our sponsors for their generous and continued support.

Open Week Results Alan O'Keeffe (11) took advantage of the calm conditions to win the A.I.B. Open on Wednesday 22nd of August with a massive score of 44 pts, one ahead of Joseph Timoney (16) with 43 pts. 3rd place went to Kieran McElroy (15) from Omagh G.C. with 42 pts.

The Gross prize winner was Billy Madden (07) with 32 gross pts.

Seamus Faulkner with Murvagh and Gweedore U-16 Teams gross winner on Wednesday as well so definitely a man in form.

Fresh from his runners-up performance of the previous day, Joseph Timoney (14) scored a very impressive 38 pts in tough conditions Eddie Walsh & Sons Family Meats. Unfortunately Sunday's to go one better and claim top spot. Playing off 7 John Meehan was competition fell victim to the weather and had to be cancelled.

2nd with 35 pts and Robbie Donovan (12) was 3rd with 34 pts (bot). Team News: Congratulations to our Junior League Team who Gross went to Martin Cassidy (08) with 27 gross pts (bot). overcame Rosapenna G.C by 4-3 in a keenly contested match on 24th August. The C&C Gleeson's Open was won by Andy Graham (19) from Hilton Templepatrick G.C. with 39 pts. The good form of Jaden Mgbam (12) continued and despite losing 4 shots on President's Day, was second on 37 pts (bot) just edging out Justin Coughan (07) who had 37 pts also. The Gross prize winner was Shaun Meehan (07) with 30 Gross pts.

Leslie Robinson's Saturday Open was won by John Boyle (12) whose outstanding score of 44 pts continued the high scoring trend of the past few days. With 41 pts, Mark Burns (10) was 2nd and in-form Jaden Mgbam (12) featured for the second day in a row with 40 pts to take 3rd place.
