30,000 to visit Food Festival

Up to 30,000 visitors are expected in Donegal Town this weekend for the 10th Anniversary “A Taste of Donegal” Food Festival

“Discover, Dine and Delight in Donegal Town”

First held in 2008 the success of the festival has evolved over the years to reach its 10th Anniversary this year. Held over three days at the end of August each year, “A Taste of Donegal” has earned its place on the annual calendar of food events across Ireland. Top restaurants, hotels as well as food and drink providers will exhibit and showcase their offerings. You can browse, meet the producers, smell, taste and purchase some of the finest food and drink available from all over the country and sample products which are new and unfamiliar. RESTART – EMPOWER – SUPPORT A PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN RESTART-EMPOWER-SUPPORT (RES) programme is designed for women, age 35 plus whom have been out of the workplace for 3-years plus for the development of new-job related skills. The participants will have taken a break from employment due to family, caring roles, illness, voluntary career break or a period of unemployment. It will allow women to enhance their own skills and abilities, challenge what they know about the transferable skills they already have while building confidence, assertiveness to believe in themselves and their future. Gaining a road map for their future whether that is in further training or in employment. Oﬀering them an opportunity for a second chance in their career advancement. County Donegal has second lowest average rents, according to Daft.ie survey

According to the latest figures from Daft. ie. Donegal remains one of the cheapest places to rent a home despite a slight rise in cost compared to 2017. In its report, published on Friday, the property website puts the current average monthly rental cost locally at €605, up by 1.7% on the previous year. The county still has some of the lowest rental prices in the country though, second only to Leitrim where tenants pay an average of €557 per month. Nationwide rents are going up with an overall average climb of 12.4%. Tenants in counties like Laois, Offaly, Louth and Wexford saw significant hikes in their monthly bills and for that reason, more and more people are looking north.

New Funeral Home for Donegal A third generation family in the funeral business in Donegal Town has applied this week for planning permission for a funeral home in the town. George Irwin Funeral Directors dates back to the 1920’s with George Irwin, his son Roy and now grandsons Justin and Lawson in charge. The proposed 850 sq ft funeral home will be constructed on the same site as the veterinary surgery over at Irwin’s, Milltown and will comprise of a reception area, visitors’ room with tea and coffee facilities and the provision of car parking. Talking to The Eye Justin said, “At the moment there are no removals from Letterkenny Hospital and recently we have

found that a lot of people don’t want to hold a wake at home, with an increasing demand for a funeral home. “Every funeral gets equal treatment and we treat everyone with dignity and respect. Pending planning we intend to start work early next year and the new funeral home will serve the whole community. “I would like to stress that it will be business as usual at the veterinary clinic and also the proposed funeral home will not affect our existing business at our hardware store.” The Irwin family are delighted to have received a great response and encouragement from the public and locals for their new venture.

Dunkineely Community Centre Upgrade Work has started on the Dunkineely Community Centre this week with the building getting new windows and the existing guttering extended. New signage will also be erected outside and a major refurbishing job inside. Talking to The Eye, John B O’Donnell chairman said, “The building needed a revamp and we are anxious to get the centre up and running again. A new heating system is being installed and the centre will be fully

insulated, refurbished and painted. It is an eight week project and hopefully when work is complete the community will make use of the centre for different activities and social events.” John also commented that while work is taking place the bottle banks have been removed for safety reasons. Funding for the project was received from Government based funding through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Tirchonaill Street Bridge Replacement

Donegal County Council announces that works are about to commence on the replacement of Tirchonaill Street Bridge Originally constructed in 1895, the current structure was put in place in 1920. The four span steel bridge over the River Eske despite maintenance works over the years has deteriorated to the extent that it currently has a 3.5 tonne weight restriction and is in much need of a replacement. In February 2017, a delegation from the Donegal Municipal District met with Shane Ross, Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport, to seek specific funding for the much needed bridge replacement works at Tirchonaill Bridge. Thankfully, the Minister recognised the need for the works and funding was secured and this allowed Donegal Council to proceed with the works. After carrying out tender assessments L & M Keating Ltd were appointed as the contractor to carry out the works. The current contract value for the works

is €924,448.60 The works will involve the following: • Implementing road closures and traffic management measures to facilitate the works and the flow of traffic around the works. • The demolition of the existing bridge steel superstructure. • The cleaning/repair and re-pointing of the existing substructure. • Works to the existing substructure to allow the construction of the replacement steel and concrete composite bridge superstructure. • Construction of replica bridge parapets to match the existing steel riveted panels. • Roadworks on the bridge and approaches. • The temporary and permanent diversion of services and associated new ducting and chambers.

• Bridge deck waterproofing. • Road, footpath, and substructure drainage and ducting works. The Contractor has indicated their intention to commence works on site in the next few days and is expecting to have works completed early next year. Road closures and traffic management measures will take effect on Monday 27th August 2018. Donegal County Council wish to apologise in advance for any inconvenience the closures may cause and ask for members of the public to abide by the traffic management measures when implemented so as to help facilitate traffic flows around the works site. Every effort will be made to expedite the works and re-open the roads as soon as possible.

I’ve returned to the “Cowboy side of California”, to the town of Parkfield, located on the San Andreas Fault Line, known for its minute population of 18 people and being the “Earthquake Capital of the World”.

from San Fran and LA, which consists of a Cafe, a Lodge, some houses and a little red trailer where I now live. The V6 Ranch is what makes this place the Cowboy side of California. The V6 Ranch spans 22,000 acres and is owned by Jack Varian and his family (of which there are 6, hence V6). Jack and his wife Zera bought the ranch in 1961 and since then they and their children have created a place that people from all over the world come to experience their own slice of ranch life. How did I end up here? I was in college in Maynooth in 2014 and at a house party, there was a new girl there playing the guitar and wearing cowboy hat & boots, I turned to my friend and said “Who invited the Yank?” The Yank was in fact Lauren Varian (Jack and Zera’s granddaughter) and from then we became friends and last year she invited me to live in her home town for a couple months, which I accepted, and now here I am again. Although it technically has a small population, there’s always people in town. It’s a

popular place that bikers stop on their rides, there’s even a few regulars that fly their helicopters here just to have a ‘Parkfield Shakin’ Burger’ from the Cafe. (Supermac’s hasn’t made it here just yet). John and Barb, (Lauren’s parents) run the cafe and lodge and events year round that draw tourists to this little town! From Cattle Drives to Dude Ranch Weekends they cater for all horse riding ability. It’s a popular place for city slickers from LA or San Fran to come and pretend to be cowboys. Having grown up watching Classic Westerns like Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 and in my adult life Toy Story 3, my idea of cowboys and ranch life were tainted by Hollywood ideals. Until I got here I had figured the only cowboys I would meet would be plumbers and maintenance men, but as sure as a spade’s a spade they’re real, no snakes in their boots and the watering hole is Brita-filtered but they have their hats, spurs,

chaps and a pretty decent sense of humour. Being here and becoming friends with all these people has been an amazing experience. It’s nice to shake things up a little, kind of like the 3.5 magnitude earthquake that happened here 3 days ago. While temperatures are reaching 40 degrees Celsius every day, there are some similarities between here and home. People complain about the weather, there’s plenty of cows about and a few snakes in the grass. For those of you who have frequented The Forge Bar a little later in the night and heard Joe Sweeney sing the Willie Nelson classic “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, I have to disagree, they’re a sound bunch of lads. DRUMHOME HERITAGE WALK A GREAT SUCCESS The weather was not on our side on Friday evening for our Drumhome Heritage Society Walk 2018 to Ard Fothaidh. The rain did not dampen the spirits of all those (approx. 95 people) who joined on us our adventure. The walk was led by Dr. Brian Lacey who gave very interesting insights into the Ballymagroarty Monastery, Colmcille’s connections to the area, McGonigle’s Fort/Ard Fothaidh and Drumhome Monastery. The Drumhome Heritage Society are very thankful to so many people who put in huge effort to make this event such a success. Big thanks to all the land owners along the track especially Tony McCafferty for allowing us to walk the Fort and so generously letting us have the use of his great barn for refreshments and music after the walk. A sincere thanks to our neighbours for all their good will and cooperation with this event - it would not have happened without all your help.

There were standing ovations at the Bosco Centre recently for the annual McNelis Cunningham Boyle Irish Dance School Beats of Broadway production. A spectacular display of music, song and dance from a cast of over 100 performers ranging in ages from 3 to 23. A unique display of modern Irish dance specially choreographed to many of Broadway’s and Disney’s favourite tunes with special guest performances from current Riverdance stars and a special vocal performance from Emma Warren who currently performs with the hit production “Hairspray” off the West End. The show is designed so that even the youngest performer can shine alongside the professional Riverdancers. Paula McNelis, the show’s director, says “the production gets better and better each year and the talent and confidence of the dancers grows with every production. I think this was our best show to date.”

“Indeed it’s been an amazing week for the Dance School with many of our local dancers along with teachers Shaun and Deirdre performing with Riverdance at the ‘Mary from Dungloe’ Festival followed by mesmerising performances by Donegal Town’s Ruth Mc Kenna and Gerard Byrne as leading dancers in ‘Titanic Dance’ at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. All of these dancers started off performing with Beats of Broadway. “We work all year at the studio preparing for our annual performance and it is the highlight of the school’s year, we are already thinking about the songs we will use for next year’s performance,” she concluded. Busking Festival The annual Busking Festival returns to Letterkenny streets this Saturday.

in its fourth year the festival has become a key fixture on Donegal’s entertainment calendar and attracts singers, songwriters, bands, instrumentalists and entertainers from all over Ireland. There is €1,000 up for grabs and if you are a group, musician, street entertainer or performer of any type you could be in with a chance of taking home some of the cash. Home cooking with Sian CHICKEN POT PIES TOPPED

WITH SMASH THAT MASH

Pot pies are the very essence of easy family eating and should feature regularly on every dinner table. If your family includes children of different ages requiring different portion size meals, pot pies in various size pots - from ramekins to oven proof coffee cups and cereal bowls to earthenware individual pie dishes are ideal. The pot pie filling perfectly teams up with last week’s mash recipes, but feel free to top pies with crusty, glazed puff or shortcrust pastry. INGREDIENTS • Dribble of oil • 1tsp butter • 200grms chicken pieces (no bones or skin) • 1 onion finely chopped • 1-2 tsps. fried tarragon (optional) • 2 carrots finely diced • 2 tblsp plain flour • 200 mls chicken stock • 200mls milk • Small pk frozen peas • Seasoning • Mash (enough for 4 – 8 pot pies) • 150 grms grated cheese. METHOD 1. Heat oil and butter in a frying pan. When butter is melted, add chicken and fry turning once, no need to cook through at this stage. 2. Add onions, carrots and tarragon. Cook for a few minutes. 3. Add the flour and mix into the chicken and vegetables. 4. Take off the heat, add the liquid, a little at a time to start with, always stirring gently. When the mix is quite loose, pour in the rest of the liquid and peas. 5. Place pan back on the heat and stir as it thickens. Leave to cook gently for 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked. 6. Taste and season accordingly. TO FINISH POT PIES 1. ¾ fill pots with chicken filling. Top with hot soft mash and sprinkle with grated cheese. If cheese isn’t available, brush top with beaten egg. 2. Place pies under grill to brown and melt cheese. Serve hot with extra portions of vegetables. 3. Tip: Double the recipe, with intention of freezing pies that aren’t required immediately. Leave out the grilling instructions. RING THE CHANGES: 1. Replace carrots with mushrooms and flavour with a spoon or two of sherry, tasting after each spoonful. 2. Replace chicken with fish such as cod, smoked haddock, salmon and prawns. Add cubed raw fish along with peas. Cook thoroughly. 3. Replace 50% milk with single cream for a richer, creamier tasting sauce. QUICK TIPS If your knife skills aren’t so good or quick, a mini food processor is a welcome addition to the kitchen. I can guarantee this small appliance will never collect dust on the shelf. Use to dice vegetables, make breadcrumbs and grate cheese (if appliance allows). The event will take place on the later date of Saturday September 29th. As in previous years, there will be free family events throughout the day, with the usual displays of crafts and traditional skills from local people. A special attraction of the fair is the scarecrow competition and the committee are encouraging locals, clubs, community groups and businesses to get involved with an entry fee €5. Events for the day will be held in the Old Church and grounds, with some activities such as sheep shearing and rope twisting taking place in the nearby field in the afternoon. Traditional music will fill the air out at Killymard all day with intervals of storytelling in the corner. They were taking part in the Rose of Tralee festival parade. Congratulations to all the Leaving Cert students who got their results. Remember, it’s one door closing and a new opportunity opening. The future’s bright. The Frosses Golf Society were in Letterkenny golf club a few weeks ago. The Mohans Bar sponsored outing was won by Cathal McNeely with John Burke (Killian) second and John Histon in third. Last week’s outing to Donegal Golf Club was won by John Mohan with Charlie Breslin second and Stephen Carty third. Tim Kelly was the sponsor. The next outing is on Wednesday 5th September at Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club and is kindly sponsored by John Burke (Killian). There has been some nice tidying up done around the village recently. Up at the entry to the quarry hole in Ballybrillaghan has been tidied up and fenced off. Looks great. Fr. Seamus and his team have added a nice green fence to the side of the church. It’s a nice touch. Tom has continued his labour of love at the flower beds and they certainly have added to the appearance of the village.

Medieval Artifacts and Weaponry Display at Heritage week in Donegal Castle

Heritage Week opened this year with Leghowney Market in the grounds of Donegal Castle on Sat. August 18th and despite a damp start to the day, nearly 2000 people came through the doors to sample

the best of local produce and crafts. Sunday was another busy day with storytelling and a medieval artifacts and weaponry display.

Gardening with Emer FOOD FOR THOUGHT Recently I have had people coming to me asking for specific qualities in a plant rather than a particular one that they have seen before. For example, they might want a low growing plant to cover a rocky area, or a scented evergreen for a pot outside the door. I find myself returning to the same group of plants over and over, they are herbs! You can find a herb to suit nearly every situation, shade, sun, in a pot or even indoors. There are evergreen and perennial herbs with highly scented foliage, most of which have beautiful flowers that attract butterflies and bees. They add a mixture of flavours to meals, desserts, drinks and you can even grow ones to make your own tea! The cherry on the top is that many have medicinal uses too. For example, Oregano is known to have antibacterial qualities, so a sprinkle of fresh leaves on your pasta or cheese toastie won’t only add a delicious flavour but also some health benefits.

You can grow herbs indoors on a kitchen window throughout the winter which leaves them handy for harvesting a few sprigs when needed. Parsley is a great garnish for every meal and if eaten last it can eliminate bad breath!! Once you’ve added Rosemary to your roast potatoes you will never want them plain again. Mint and Lemon Verbena are the perfect additions to desserts or iced drinks. A mixture of chopped Tarragon, Chives and French Parsley in your scrambled eggs will bring new excitement to the dish. Then to end the day, a tea from dried chamomile flowers or from fennel leaves will have you relaxed before going to sleep. Musings of Times Past THE HOLY YEAR

PART 1 OF 3

The first day of January 1950 ushered in my eleventh birthday. I had long since become aware of the fact that a birthday so close to Christmas suffered from one major drawback. Christmas presents generally came with the caveat “That will have to do you for your birthday as well”. Not being too aware of the financial restraints that might exist in our home I would, as I thought, bear my deprivation with a patient shrug and accept a few pairs of socks or something of the like with feigned excitement even though deep down I felt I was in some way being short changed by my mother as she asked me to fit them on and wouldn’t they keep me lovely and warm for the winter. I would have had to get these socks anyway and the timing of necessities like this had been dovetailed to coincide with a birthday that certainly, if right were right, should be celebrated with a ball or gun something of the like. Eleven or no I was fully aware that my aspirations could not be met with a bicycle or roller skates. These were the preserve of boys coming from better off families who when benign relationships existed between us were available for my limited use. Strangely enough we knew deep down the financial limitations of our parents and felt no rancour whatever. Nor did we feel envy or jealousy towards our friends who might possess these superior baubles. These were the facts of life and we just got on with it. Nurse Meehan, our local midwife, was a different proposition altogether. Because my birthday was New Year’s Day and because she had delivered me she decided on my sixth birthday to give me a sixpence and promised me faithfully that this amount would increase by one penny with each advancing year until the age of twelve when she would present me with my final moiety of twelve pence or one shilling. She now owed me eleven pence and good manners dictated that I just could not call to her house and straight off

remind her of her promise. No, a subtler approach had to be employed. This would entail just happening to meet her, maybe on the street, and wish her a Happy New Year. If this failed to jog her memory I could always, in a round about way, ask her did she know what day this was, that it was my eleventh birthday and that lovely kindly lady would succumb to my diplomacy, remember her promise and on accompanying her to her house would present me with my real birthday present. Financial independence had visited me and I was secure in the knowledge that for maybe a week I would have an ample supply of bulls eyes, brandy balls, cough‑no‑mores or conversation lozenges, the choice was mine. The first day of January 1950 also ushered in ‘The Holy Year’ and we had been made aware of the fact at school by the master and by our local curate Fr. Rowan. A dictat had come from Dr. McFeely, the Bishop of Raphoe, that a plenary indulgence was there to be earned by anyone who visited the four churches in our local parish, the Parish of Inver, all on the one day and the reciting of seven Our Fathers, seven Hail Marys and seven Glory Be’s in each church. Our interpretation of the said indulgences was that we could offer our prayers up for anyone we could think of and the indulgences would automatically flow to these people. With this in mind Paul Gallagher and I decided we would head off on our pilgrimage in May or June when the weather would be milder and the days longer. We decided we would include everybody who lived in the village excluding protestant families who could not really qualify. We had to have a cut off point for those who would benefit from the said indulgences. If we strayed past a

certain point at the end of the village we were encroaching on townlands and if we included one townland say, Glencoagh then why not the next - Drimkeelin. Our cut off point was to be The Lazy Bush at the Upper End of the village and the Railway Bridge at the Lower End. We agreed these to be the town boundaries and everybody living within these boundaries would benefit from our intercessions. This number would have come to about three hundred souls and we decided to write out each name. Paul starting at one end of the village and I at the other. We treated the “Plan” with utmost secrecy as there was always the possibility of being laughed at by some of our friends. So we kept writing names into two separate copy books and every few days we checked each other’s work until the full population had been noted and entered up. These same tomes were then placed somewhere safe and secure from the prying eyes of some busybody who might chance on them. As winter turned to spring I let it be known at home of our intentions to visit the four churches, Mountcharles, Frosses, Ardaghey and Drimarone. I felt I could rely on my eldest sister Mairead for the loan of her bicycle. She had just been married to a local shopkeeper and lived up the village. Her husband had bought her a bicycle for her birthday the previous year and I knew she had a soft spot for me anyway. Continued next week…

Next week’s walk will be Sheskinmore Nature Reserve, Rosbeg. Probably a 3‑hour walk, mainly flat and dependent on tides - a slide down Tramore beach dunes. Paddy also suggests that as parking is limited at the entrance to the Nature Reserve it would be an idea for those travelling to share cars. Seamus McCallig Cup Final The final of the Seamus McCallig Cup took place on Thursday 16th August between St. Catherine’s and Donegal Town. The game started with Donegal on the front foot and they had a few good chances through David Graham after 10min. David also had another good chance after 18min when his header was well saved by Brandon McBrearty. Steven Graham had a good effort for the Town after 22min when he tipped over the bar. The Saints also narrowly missed after 30min with a shot which just went wide, and the score was 0/0 at half time.

St. Catherine’s came out more attackminded in the second half and had some good performers in young Patrick Dowds and Mark Finnerty. The deadlock was broken on the 57th min. when a good cross from David Graham was well struck by Steven Graham resulting in 1/0 to the Town. It was end to end football after that, but it ended up with Donegal Town lifting the Cup for the first time after twice being beaten in two previous finals. A very good sporting game well refereed by Seamus McGrory.

The SENIOR TEAM lost out to Naomh Brid in a top of the table clash at Trummon last Sunday. Final Score: N. Brid 1-9, N. Ultan 0-5. The RESERVE TEAM went down on a scoreline of 3-9 to 1-7. The Club wish club players Jonathan Cassidy, Danny Shovlin and Matthew O’Donnell all the best as they head off to Australia. There was no winner of the Royal Flush Jackpot. Under 12 Girls Our U12 girls finished off their season in style by attending an U12 blitz at Naomh Ultan last Saturday. Many thanks to Naomh Ultan for the invite and best of luck to them as they have just started competing in the Ladies football for the first time and are competing very well. It was great to see many of the county ladies players and their Ulster final trophy at the blitz. The girls started with a difficult game vs Kilcar. Although we were losing at half time, Donegal Senior Camogie team who we battled back to have a good win. defeated Burt recently in Convoy. Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh will host a 3 Ball Mixed Scramble fundraiser for the RNLI Lifeboats on Friday 31st August. The competition is a Shotgun Start @ 5.30pm with an open draw format. As well as club members, the RNLI invite and encourage players from other clubs - Bundoran, Portnoo and Twin Towns - to participate. The event was launched in the Bank of Ireland, Donegal Town. The €15 entry fee per person includes food and €5 to the RNLI. With Storm Ernesto responsible for the cancellation of the Juniors’ Prize on Friday, our President’s Weekend finally got underway with the Ladies competition on Saturday. Margaret Trimble (22) won 1st Prize and the Maureen Temple Perpetual Trophy with a great score of 35 pts. 2nd was Mary Farragher (24) with 34 pts (BOT) from both Maureen Childs (16) and Mary Harley (23). Cat 0-20 winner was Helen O’Shea (16) with 34 pts. Cat 21-28 was Mary McLaughlin (22) with 29 pts. Cat 29+ went to Joan Thomas (32) with 29 pts. Front 9- Rosemary Carr (18) with 17 pts (BOT).
