Gardening with Emer CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY Now that autumn is upon us, it is time to check your gardens for any damage, diseases or losses that may have occurred during the summer months. It is the ideal planting time for new shrubs, hedging and perennials as the ground is warm and damp! It is also the perfect time to divide or move your existing perennials. If they are still in flower, leave them until they start to go over before lifting them for division. A good tip for dividing a large clump is to dig it up, place two forks in the centre back to back and prize the clump apart with minimum root damage. This will give your perennials a greater lifespan as it cuts down on competition and encourages new growth. You will also have a number of new plants for free to fill gaps in your garden or to share with friends! On Saturday 18th August, Ashtree Garden Centre is holding a ‘Customer Appreciation Day’. It is our way of

thanking you for your loyal custom throughout the year and it offers you the chance to get some great bargains during the ideal planting season. There will be reductions and multi-buy offers on shrubs, roses, hedging, trees, fruit trees and bushes, herbs and garden furniture. These offers will be in place for one day only from 9am-6pm. During the afternoon from 2pm-5pm we have organised a number of activities for children, including crazy golf, a small animal farm and day long free access to our indoor beach. Adult supervision will be required during these activities. There will also be a barbeque in place with plenty of nibbles to tempt you. Book Launch

The Disert Heritage Project, have produced a book entitled, ‘Disert in the Blue Stacks’. It is a collection of poems, songs, music, folklore, history and archaeology centred on Disert and the surrounding Bluestack Mountains. To celebrate the launch, the Bluestack Centre put on an evening of music, recitation, dance, tea and homebakes, on Sunday 5th August.

Eamonn Monaghan recited from ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes; the first of seventeen verses goes as follows: The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees. The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas. The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor, And the highwayman came riding— Riding—riding— The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door. It brought many of us back to our school days, when we sat, row upon row of little Philistines, without any appreciation of how fine and moving poetry can be. Oh how times have changed!

Councillor John Campbell, who officially launched the book with his mother, Moya other similar projects are composed entirely of, what Helen called, ‘Golden Oldies’. She thanked all involved and those who couldn’t be there that evening, especially the project archaeologist, Dr Fiona Beglane, and Kim Pereira, who did the graphic design for the book. She thanked Dr Brian Lambkin who travelled from the Ulster-American Folk Park to be at the launch. She also thanked Councillor John Campbell for his financial support.

Folksy Gerry, MC for the Evening The MC for the evening’s musical entertainment was Gerry Meehan, affectionately known to all as ‘Folksy Gerry’. Gerry and a host of local musicians entertained us with familiar, and not-so-familiar tunes. We were also entertained with recitations: Ernan O’Donnell (who insisted that he was from Kilrane, not Glenties!) is something of a cultural connoisseur. His piece on ‘Poochin’, elevated the illegal capture of fish to something approaching the level of a refined cultural activity: he made us all smile!

The Royal Place of the High Kings

Ard Fothaidh known locally as “McGonigle’s Fort” in the Townland of Glasbolie (located in the Parish of Drumhome between Ballintra and Rossnowlagh, Co. Donegal) was a hugely important ancient seat of the high kings of Ireland. In fact, between 568 AD and 639 AD, the fort at Ard Fothaidh in South Donegal was the royal residence of many Irish High Kings. In the period 460 to 470 Patrick was active establishing Christian settlements in

the region. This conversion to Christianity wasn’t an easy task. Holy men such as Patrick had to be tough and level headed to gain the trust of Clans. Chieftains guarded their land and power, and many were not prepared to hand away land to evangelists. Patrick set out from the Monastery at Assaroe near Ballyshannon northwards along the coast towards Rossnowlagh. Upon reaching Ard Fothaidh meaning ‘the Height of the Green’, Patrick was taken by the beauty of the place and considered establishing a foundation or monastery there. It is said that Patrick was warned off by a heavenly vision or he may have had a quiet word in his ear from local hostile chief who had great plans for that site. And so, Patrick declared that Ard Fothaidh was destined to be a future site for Irish High Kings. It must have sounded absurd to suggest that any place other than the Royal Hill of Tara in Co. Meath could be considered for this exalted honour. Come along to our Heritage walk on Friday 17th August at 6pm to find out more of Ard Fothaidh's intriguing past. (Ref. PETTIGO The WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES 2018 will open on the evening of Tuesday 21st August in parishes and dioceses across the country with a special liturgy. Tirchonaill Street Bridge Update

Donegal County Council have advised the Eye on Donegal that the planned start date for the works at Tirchonaill Street Bridge has been deferred to 13th August 2018. Temporary road closures have been granted to facilitate the works up to 14th December 2018 but the County Council have emphasised that these closures will only be implemented when necessary. Works are expected to take approximately five months. Donegal County Council have asked for members of the public to abide by the traffic management measures when works are underway so as to help facilitate traffic flows around the works site. They also thanked the public in advance for their co‑operation and patience while the works are ongoing.

Update on Spire Works Archdeacon David Huss

Work is progressing well on the Church of Ireland tower and spire restoration and should be completed in a few weeks’ time. The spire has been completely repointed and the tower has almost finished receiving the same treatment. With the protective sacking removed, the spire is now revealed in its splendour. The professional cleaning (using a high temperature, low pressure system) has brought out the lovely colours of the original Mountcharles sandstone. We are pleased to have been able to source replacement stone from McMonagle’s to repair the most worn sections. The largest area of new stone will be around the door, where the stone arch is being completely re-built. This will be the last major stage of the work and will bring the Church’s main entrance back to its former glory.

Plans for “Orphan Girls” Memorial in Australia James McDaid

Many people may not be aware of the story of the Orphan Girls who were shipped to Australia between 1848 and 1850, from the workhouses of Ireland including Donegal. I have traced the life story and met one of the descendants of Anne Edwards from the Parish of Inver who was in the workhouse at the time. I have a project in mind to make a connection between her birth place outside Mountcharles and where she is buried in Eaglehawk, Victoria, about two hours from Melbourne. She was buried in what the Australian’s call an “earth grave” - unmarked apart from a rectangle of dry bricks. My idea is to get a group together and organise a memorial made from local Mountcharles stone and have it shipped to Eaglehawk, connect with her descendants in Australia, and have it erected by them. This could be a memorial not only to her but also to the other orphan girls who found themselves in the Eaglehawk area. This would also give them a relationship with and a reason to discover their roots in Donegal. The subject, I believe, would make a great television programme as well as generating great publicity for Donegal and Mountcharles. Help is needed to get this project off the ground and preparing a proposal to present to a TV production company. Tons of Timber

The MV Afalina was in Killbegs harbour over the weekend loading a consignment of 12,000 tons of timber bound for Germany.

The timber was of mixed species destined for pulping as it is not suitable for processing here in Ireland. Pictured is Harbour Pilot Patsy Kelly with Captain Victor Drozdov on the wing of the bridge after berthing on Sunday morning around 8am. The crew of the vessel were Lithuanian. The Â vessel was loaded over Sunday and Monday and departed for Germany around 6.30pm on Monday. The shipâ€™s hold was filled with the timber and there was so much that the excess was carried as deck cargo.

To the saucepan add all carrots (halved), halved onions with skin on or 1 roughly chopped leek, and 2 sticks of celery and the stock cubes. 3. Bring to boil, turn down the heat and simmer gently for approximately 90 minutes for a full chicken (longer if over 2.5kg) TIP: If you are in a hurry for the shredded chicken, poach 2-4 chicken fillets instead. These take approximately 40 minutes. Important: Chicken must be cooked thoroughly. How to Shred the Cooked Chicken 1. Shredding must be done when the chicken is hot. 2. Drain the chicken and dry on kitchen paper. Keep the stock for soup or sauce. 3. With your hands, gently dispose of the skin and tear the chicken meat away from the bones. 4. Using two forks, pulling away from each other, shred the chicken into fairly decent sizes. 5. Cool the shredded chicken by spreading out on a cold plate. Place in a fridge and use up within 3 days. Shredded chicken freezes well but can only be reheated once. Defrost overnight in a fridge.

‘Wild Atlantic Crafts’ in Killybegs

This new bright modern craft shop has opened in recent weeks on Main Street, Killybegs in the premises which previously housed “The Front Porch”. The crafts in the shop are all hand made locally and are unique - tweeds, knitwear, driftwood, jewellery, pictures - a treasure trove of gifts for special occasions. A rejuvenating group headed by Cllr. Niamh Kennedy created a small co-op to open the shop where members get involved in the day to day running of the business. Niamh told The Eye on Donegal that she is delighted with the new shop which is doing very, very well. “It is great to have all the businesses under one roof and the expenses shared. I realize how difficult it is to set up a business with rent costs etc. this way we have around 15 crafters under

one roof who work voluntarily in the day to day running of the shop and share the costs while showcasing and selling their crafts and designs. The shop is very busy, we have had two cruise ships visit town since we opened, we distributed flyers on board and this was a great boost to the shop”. One of the ladies involved - Martina Kennedy - told The Eye on Donegal that she is delighted with the new shop and how busy they are with both tourists and locals. “The first day we opened there was a cruise ship in town and the shop was full all day. The crafts sold in the shop are hand made locally and one of these is driftwood crafted by my husband Pauric Gallagher”, she said. The shop is open seven days a week Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 12 noon - 6pm.

WILLIAM HEMMERSBACH & DRUMBEG

IMPERIAL WINDSOR HOTEL Born in Cologne Germany in 1878, William Hemmersbach first moved to England as a young man where he worked in the hotel business and then later came to Donaghadee in Co. Down around 1909. In January of that year a company was incorporated with the registered offices at The Parade, Donaghadee by William Hemmersbach and a stated purpose of taking over as a going concern and carrying on the business of the New Imperial Windsor Hotel, Donaghadee.

THE FAMILY William married Emily Florence Johnston of Belfast in February 1909 and their first child William James was born on 24th October; they had at least four other children - Florence Marie, Katherine Violet, James Andrew and Regina Madeline. Florence Marie would later marry Thomas John Coyle at St Conal’s Roman Catholic Church Kilclooney, Ardara on 4th June 1935. Thomas was in the RAF during WWII and was killed in an accident in North Wales in 1939 and buried in Frosses.

DEATH FROM DROWNING Tragedy came to the Hemmersback family on 10th May of 1914 when their oldest son William James, aged four and half, went missing and a frantic search was made by the family, police and staff of the hotel. William and his mother had had dinner in the afternoon and then she saw him again playing outside later in the day; he was not missed till about 6pm when he didn’t come in for his tea. The family and staff set out to look for him but he couldn’t be found and the police were informed. It wasn’t till the tide had gone out at 4 o’clock the following morning and a pond used by guests of the hotel for bathing was drained, that the body of the little boy was found face down in the sand. A verdict of accidental death from drowning was returned at the inquest by the coroner.

ENEMY ALIENS Misfortune came to the family again in August 1914 when at the outbreak of WWI hundreds of German men who were resident in Ireland were arrested as enemy aliens. However inoffensive they might have been before, they were now a threat. These men, including William Hemmersbach, were rounded up and interned in Oldcastle Workhouse in Co. Meath. As a result of his interment William was no longer able to run his business and in 1916, an order for the winding-up of the New Imperial & Windsor Hotels Co. Ltd, was applied for. At first, there was no offer for the premises. In October 1916 before Justice Kenny, in the Chancery Division, the liquidator, applied for an order authorising the acceptance of the tender of Mr Angus Campbell of Holyrood Barone Road, Rothesay, to purchase for £525 the premises of the Imperial Hotel, Donaghadee, Co. Down and the hotel furniture and effects.

NEW BEGINNING During this period Emily moved the family to Inniskeel House, Narin, Co. Donegal. Having been closed since 1920 the Portnoo Hotel was offered for sale by auction in 1925 and William Hemmersbach, seeing an opportunity, secured a ten-year lease on the property. A newspaper article of 27th May 1932 reported the residents of Narin were preparing for the summer visitors, several new buildings were in the course of erection. Mr B Gallagher, Co. Councillor has almost completed his tea rooms quite close to the beach and his tennis court adjacent will provide what was a much needed want. The golf greens have been renovated under the supervision of Mr Hemmersbach and should give every satisfaction to devotees of the game. We, the family of the late Patsy Kerrigan, are sincerely grateful to everyone who sympathised with us on our recent bereavement - those who attended the wake and funeral especially those who travelled long distances to be with us. We truly appreciate our good neighbours and friends and the kindness of local businesses who helped out in so many ways during the wake and the funeral. Saturday morning last was perfect in Dunkineely - no rain, not too sunny and the 124 participants in the 6th “Point 10k” headed off just after 11am following a warm up conducted by Sharon Cunningham. The winner, Conor Brennan of Letterkenny AC, came across the line in 38 minutes 16.7 seconds as if he had just stepped around the corner. First woman home was Helen McCready of Rosses AC in a time of 42 minutes 12.7 seconds. Organiser Pauric McNern was delighted with the turnout and thanked all involved for their participation and support of this year’s charities - The Darragh Daly Rehabilitation Fund and Bruckless Community Centre Restoration Fund.

Golf Club

Played in perfect golfing conditions, the Bank Holiday Weekend Competition, sponsored by The Abbey & Central Hotels, saw John McIntyre (15) return to the winners’ podium with a great score of 41pts. A close-fought battle for 2nd place saw Gerry Forde (17) pip Shaun Meehan (07) and playing partner Fergus Towey (15) in a bot when all finished on 38pts. Gross winner was Enda Campbell (4) on 30pts. FOUR MASTERS U14 The Four Masters U14 Girls won the County Division 2 Championship on Monday against Buncrana on a score line of 3-07 to 1-03 Four Masters U14 girls produced a battling performance to overcome a physical Buncrana team to bring the County Division 2 title back through the Gap after the final in Killygordon. It was great to see all the blue and white flags in the large travelling support for the girls.

Buncrana threw everything at the Four Masters defence in the second half but with some resilient defending superbly marshalled by Holly Roarty and Aine Ward the team rearguard couldn’t be breached. Buncrana only managed to score 2 points with the wind in the second half. Four Masters were always in control. Points from Ashling Kee and Lucy Monaghan, and a great goal from Captain Ellen Canavan sealed an emphatic victory for the Donegal Town girls.

The girls played with a strong wind in the first half and made it tell early on. An early point from Ellen Canavan followed by an opportunist goal by Aoife Cox settled the girls down. Ellen tagged on a few more points before Buncrana responded with a point. Aine Ward then scored a goal straight from a ‘45’ which put Four Masters in the driving seat. But a hard running Buncrana team responded with a goal of their own. Aine Ward then scored another monster score from a ‘45’ which lifted the girls again. Ashling Kee followed with a great point. We felt as a team at half time that we hadn’t scored enough with the wind and now we had to face into the stiff breeze in the second half.

Wild celebrations from the players and supporters followed the final whistle. Captain Ellen Canavan accepted the trophy on behalf of the team giving a very mature and gracious speech. A cavalcade of cars escorted the girls back to The Diamond in Donegal where they were greeted by a large home crowd. The celebrations continued in Quay West Restaurant where the team and management were treated to a lovely meal generously sponsored by owners Jo Daly and Debbie O’Reilly.

Congratulations to Noel, Gavan and Lily Tanham who won the 3 Generations competition with a score of 63.4. Our Donegal Seniors League team claimed a dramatic victory over Ballyliffen G.C., winning by the narrowest of margins. Leading 3-2 after the away leg, the game went down to the wire with Murvagh eventually winning by 1 hole. Played in the true spirit of the game, credit to both teams for such a sporting and memorable match.
