‘Donegal Town Service Station’ opens with Supermac’s and Londis By Margaret Gallagher ‘Donegal Town Service Station’, the new plaza at Drumlonagher, opens its doors this Friday, 3rd August, at 12 o’clock. The multimillion euro development is complete and the bright modern complex houses a Londis shop, Hot Carvery and Deli, Supermac’s, Papa John’s Pizza, SuperSubs, Bewley’s coffee and Top Oil fuel pumps. Breakfast is served from 7am followed by carvery lunch at 12 noon with seating for 100 customers downstairs and 60 upstairs. This new plaza has brought seventy new jobs to Donegal town which includes full-time and parttime. Talking to the Eye on Donegal, Director

Ken Foley said they were delighted with the finished high standard plaza which is on target to open this week “Donegal Town Service Station fondly referred to as The New Plaza, are very excited about opening the first Supermac’s in Donegal Town and just in time for the Donegal / Tyrone game on Sunday,” he said. The New Plaza will open from 7am to 12pm and customers can avail of an after-hours hatch service all night. Breakfast is served from 7am, both sit in or take away plus hot carvery lunch each day with a special Sunday lunch carvery. “We have ample car parking,” Ken said, “I feel new development reinvigorates people.”

Trip to Fleadh Cheoil

Donegal Town Women’s Group are going on a day trip to Fleadh Cheoil in Drogheda on Thursday 16th August, bus Leaving Donegal Town at 8.30am and back around 8.30pm. Funding approved for Bluestack Foundation

€36,000 of interim funding is to assist until permanent solution obtained Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has welcomed the decision to approve interim funding of €36,000 for the Bluestack Foundation in Donegal Town. This funding measure will assist in the running of the organisation in the coming months. The Bluestack Foundation assists young people with disabilities in south and west Donegal and the organisation thus far has been run totally on voluntary contributions from the general public organised by a group of volunteers. Earlier this year the Government failed to include the Foundation in the “Ability Programme”, which when announced failed to include any disability organisation in the Northwest of Ireland. “This announcement will in some way ease the disappointment of the failure to include the Bluestack Foundation in

the Ability Programme, but this interim measure cannot be a substitute for the need for mainstream funding for this group. The Bluestack Foundation on its own merits deserves to be in receipt of mainstream annual funding such as can be availed of through the Ability Programme. The Bluestack Foundation has a long history of helping and assisting young people with disabilities,” stated Pat the Cope. “After contacting An Taoiseach with a map highlighting the regional imbalance as a result of the decision taken by the Government the HSE reacted and allocated this interim funding, but I can assure the Bluestack Foundation that this is not the end of the campaign and until they are in receipt of permanent funding I for one will not rest,” concluded Pat the Cope.

ARDARA On Saturday 4th August there will be a RE‑ENACTMENT WALK for the 430th Anniversary of the Spanish Armada 1588 2018. Come walk with historic re-enactors in the footsteps of the 900 survivors of La Duquesa Santa Ana from Kiltoorish (Rosbeg) to Killybegs. This is a family friendly event. A new three-year limit to charges applied to farm land and productive business assets under the Fair Deal Nursing Home Scheme has been announced by the Government. At present a 7.5% charge is levied every year as long as you stay in full-time care. The new legislation would mean this only applies for the first three years, similar to other assets. Charges already paid will count towards the three years. It is hoped that the legislation will pass through the Oireachtas in time to be included in the 2019 Budget this October.

Areas could lose their Post Offices Concerns growing for Post Office network as new redundancy scheme could lead to permanent closures – Pat the Cope. Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has warned that the newly introduced voluntary redundancy scheme for Post Offices approved by the Government could potentially lead to the permanent closure of local Post Offices within the county. “It is now apparent that any Post Office which avails of this scheme cannot reopen once the present office accepts the redundancy scheme. There seems to be no flexibility in relation to the terms of the scheme and it seems to be a foregone conclusion therefore that Post Offices will close as a direct result of this newly adopted approach by Government,” he said.

He continued, “Once again this Government demonstrates its continuing failure to rural proof its policies before it implements them. If this scheme is allowed to continue in its present form it goes without saying areas will lose their post offices.”

Speaking at an event in Kilkenny last week, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Andrew Doyle, assured farmers present that the new ANC maps would be almost the same as the ones currently in use. This follows concerns amongst farming groups that changes to the maps would disqualify land from payments. The Minister explained that there is a 10% flexibility in land categorisation in the redrawing of the maps and a fine-tuning and identification process is underway to target support under the scheme from 2019 onwards.

Danny McMenamin wishes to congratulate Michael and Mandy Brown who celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary recently and commented on how wonderful they both looked in the photo which The Eye on Donegal featured in last week’s issue. Danny went on to say that Michael met his wife Mandy in Magee’s factory where the love story began on the assembly line, Michael was the supervisor and Mandy an operator.

The Frosses and Cranny Road Cemetery Sunday Mass is this coming Sunday 5th August at 11 am. The Frosses golf society are in Letterkenny this Wednesday.

Cannonball Run update By Margaret Gallagher

Cannonball Road Trip visits Donegal Town for the first time on Sunday the 7th September. The Cannonball is the largest organized road trip in Europe and most exciting motoring and social event of the year. After a pitstop at Supermac’s out at Drimlonagher some of the world’s top marque cars such as McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati and Rolls Royce will blaze the trail around the Diamond en-route to Westport where they will stay overnight. Ken Foley told the Eye on Donegal that the cars are expected to go around the Diamond at lunch time and the event is expected to bring a large crowd to town.

From humble beginnings and since it was first launched in 2008 the success of the festival has evolved over the years. A record number of food lovers, visitors and locals will descend on Donegal Town from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th August 2018 for its 10th anniversary. This year’s festival once again gathers together top restaurants, hotels, food and drink providers. Cllr. Michael Naughton, Cathaoirleach With 130 renowned exhibitors being showcased, of the Donegal Municipal District you can meander, browse, meet the producers, smell, taste and purchase some of the finest food and drink available from all over the country and sample products which are new and unfamiliar. Alongside all the celebrity chefs like Neven Maguire, Gary O’Hanlon, Kevin Dundon, Stephen McAllister, Edward Hayden and others a Taste of Donegal Food Festival provides a full entertainment programme throughout the weekend, with fireworks over Donegal Bay, live music, interactive street theatre, family fun and mime all evident. The committee feel that food festivals like A Taste of Donegal play a very important role in driving Food Tourism in Ireland by creating the perfect atmosphere and an everlasting experience for all involved. REFLECTIONS by Paddy Gaffney

â€Ścontinued from last week THE CONGO It was certainly a culture shock to say the least when we disembarked from the plane on our arrival to Leopoldville, the capital of the Congo, now known as Kinshasa. People were milling about everywhere, speaking in languages that we did not understand, but it was great, I had arrived in darkest Africa. The only prior knowledge that I had of Africa was to see it outlined on a map when I was going to school or to see it referred to on the side of the various charity collection boxes, which were in schools all over Ireland. We lived in tented accommodation where conditions were basic and the food was sparse but I loved it all. Our mission was to try to bring peace and stability to the country, which was torn apart by civil war after gaining Independence from former rulers, Belgium. It involved long hard nights and days of constant patrolling of towns and villages, sometimes by undertaking long rail journeys, and by internal flights by helicopter to the most inhospitable places of this vast country. For most of the time things ran smoothly enough but on occasions, dangerous and sometimes life threatening incidents did occur. However, we took it all in our stride and put it down to gaining experience at peacekeeping. All too soon our six months tour of duty was ending and before too long we were heading back home to avail of a well-earned leave period. I was sad to have to leave the Congo, as I had met and made friends with many local people and other nationalities serving with us, who had welcomed us warmly. SECOND HELPINGS Six months after arriving home, the opportunity arose whereby I was asked if I would travel on another mission back to the Congo. I jumped at the chance and before too long I was heading back again to Africa and renewing friendships with the local people who I had bade farewell to six months previously and who I thought I would never see again. This six months tour of duty was similar to the first tour but this time I gave myself more time to observe the local culture and traditions, view the wild animals and to try to visit as many places of interest as the security conditions would allow. Again, like the time previous, many incidents took place, but we survived and once again this tour of duty had ended and we were heading home.

OTHER MISSIONS Other missions soon followed such as Cyprus, the Sinai Desert, Lebanon and Eritrea. All of the missions had one thing in common and that was to try and keep the peace between two warring factions. This often meant being based right in the middle of the opposing forces, which at times did cause some problems. However, not all of the time was spent avoiding trouble, as I did get to see a lot of historical sights and places. I toured where possible and when the situation dictated, all the historical sights of Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan and of course Israel to visit the Holy Land. PEACEKEEPING Service with United Nations missions is strictly on a volunteer basis and I did volunteer on many occasions. In fact, I spent five years in Lebanon on ten sixmonth tours of duty, and I can honestly say that I loved the country and its people. The mission there was to observe a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and to confirm the Israeli withdrawal of their forces from the occupied areas, which they controlled. This mission was one of the most dangerous missions ever undertaken by Irish Troops as clashes between Israeli Forces and Lebanese Resistance Fighters was ongoing on almost a daily basis. ERITREA United Nations missions continued to dominate my Army career right up to a short time before I retired from the Army. My final United Nations mission was to Eritrea in East Africa. This, like all the rest of the missions, was to observe a ceasefire between the forces of Eritrea and Ethiopia who had been to war and who were anxious to make peace with each other as neither could afford to be at war. However, a land dispute and a refugee problem had to be settled first, before they would agree to a permanent end of hostilities. This was a lovely mission with little or no trouble as the people were so nice and friendly and had had enough of war. I had a nice holiday in Kenya where I went on a safari and I got the chance to visit Sudan, Addis Ababa and Djibouti as well. RETIREMENT Eritrea was my last overseas posting before retiring and so ended for me the greatest and most exciting period of my life. I have been so very lucky to have been given the opportunity to travel to foreign countries, to have seen and done so many exciting things, I have learnt so much about the lives that other people live, their culture and traditions, their wonderful countries and climates. I have shared and observed their suffering and loss and unashamedly shared their joy when invading armies withdrew from their homeland. I have met so many people, some of them famous,

others not so famous, some notorious, but in the main all of them interesting and willing to make friends. I have met and spoken to Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers, high ranking and low ranking Army Officers from several other nations, who at all times, treated me with respect, and who appreciated the good work that the Irish Troops were doing in order to help to preserve the peace in very difficult and sometimes very dangerous circumstances. THE FUTURE When I left school at fourteen, I was so disappointed that I did not get a chance to continue my education, but my two years spent on the VTOS Fetac Courses has changed all of that. My tutor, Anne Colgan, was excellent and gave me at all times enormous help and encouragement to succeed, as did all of my fellow students. Since that first day two years ago when I passed through the door of the Adult Education and Training Centre, uncertain of what to expect, I now leave with a feeling that I have achieved my goal in life, which was to further my education. Many opportunities exist nowadays for people who missed out on education, for one reason or another, and they should look no further than the Adult Education and Training Centre where they will get all the help, support and friendship needed to succeed in life. Now that my two years education have come to an end, I will be sad to leave, as I will miss all of my fellow students, tutors and staff, the daily light hearted banter, the fun, and the comradeship. But I leave a better person, with the knowledge and confidence to stride forward and to pursue a career for which I was educated for at the Adult Education and Training Centre, Donegal Town. The Meehan family on behalf of Mary’s Meals thank all who participated in their guest tea, those who hosted tables, gave donations and raffle prizes, guests, the music men Francis and Frankie. Thanks to the Frosses hall committee for the use of the hall. €4,668.40 was raised from the guest tea plus €1,365 “Jug Money”. The total of €6,033.50 was presented to Fr Eammon Kelly from Mary’s Meals group on the night. Your generosity means 386 children will receive a meal a day in a place of education for the next year. Mary’s Meals now provide for 1,257,278 children at a cost of €15.60 per child per year.

Funding for Men’s Sheds

Twenty-two groups to benefit from grants as part of fund worth €31,884 Minister Joe McHugh has welcomed an allocation of €31,884 for 22 Men’s Sheds groups across Donegal – the highest funding package outside of Dublin. “The message I hear from Men’s Sheds in the county is that a little goes a long way in terms of improving the lives of the men who get involved and the communities they support,” Mr McHugh said. “The work they do in the local community, whether it’s through Tidy Towns or lending expertise for local festivals and projects, is one of the strongest symbols of volunteer spirit and deepening community relations that has developed in recent years. “This funding round is open to Men’s Sheds groups for small grants to buy equipment or to carry out minor works. I would urge anyone involved in running these groups to get your applications in by the August 31 deadline.” Mr McHugh said: “Men’s Sheds are a massive asset to our towns and villages. They help prevent isolation. At their heart is a safe and inclusive environment for men of all ages to pick up new skills and share their know-how with a new generation but above all else it’s to feel part of a community.” The funding is being provided through the Department of Rural and Community Development and Minister Michael Ring T.D. following discussions with the Irish Men’s Shed Association.

Donegal GAA star Michael Murphy joined the team in Specsavers Donegal Town last Thursday, 26 July to help raise money for The Hope Foundation. There was a raffle for a five-foot tall Donegal supporting teddy bear - see winner on front page. Customers were invited to guess the teddy’s name to be in with a chance to win. Specsavers Donegal store director Eddie Dolan commented: “As one of Specsavers’ supported charities, we were delighted to take part in a fun activity to support The Hope Foundation. We thank Michael Murphy, Ocean FM and the local community for their support of this worthwhile charity.” In 2017, a team of optometrists from Specsavers stores in Ireland embarked on a volunteering trip with The Hope Foundation to Kolkata, carrying out over 1,000 eye tests on people across slums, schools, hospitals and rural villages in the region. They dispensed over 300 pairs of glasses and 600 pairs of premade bifocals to those who were tested. In addition to this, urgent referrals were made for eye disease and trauma-related issues, as well as 100 referrals for cataracts, to The Hope Hospital. As part of the new fundraising campaign, Specsavers staff will return to Kolkata in October 2018, alongside new Specsavers’ new style ambassador – Darren Kennedy. Specsavers Donegal Town is a local

FISH SHOP FISH ‘N’ CHIPS

The bad news - Deep fat frying foods has been scientifically proven to be a poorer cooking option, yes calories are bulked up but did you know that some oils react harmfully to extreme heat which doesn’t bode well with our well being. Time to throw out the deep fat frier? No, too extreme - just err on the side of caution. 1. Use either sunflower or rapeseed oil and regularly change oil. 2. Fry at a slightly lower temperature, 3. Deep fry food only as a treat not as a habit. The good news - proper crispy battered fresh Donegal fish is always on the treat list. Getting the batter crisp and light like real fish and chip shop is doable at home. Frying at home means you get to choose the healthier oils. Ingredients Crispy Oven Chips 4 -6 Potatoes (not waxy) Crispy Golden Batter 3 heaped tblsp S.R. Flour (sieved) 1 heaped tblsp Cornflour (sieved) 1 level tsp Turmeric (sieved) Good pinch of Salt 150mls (approx.) Cold sparkling water Fish 4 firm white fish pieces (bones removed) e.g. Haddock, cod; A little flour Method 1. Par boil washed potatoes for 10 minutes, skin on is good but cut away all blemishes. 2. Drain, dry and cut into thick chips. Spray with oil and bake in a good preheated hot oven for 20 minutes. Turn the chips, once or twice whilst cooking 3. Make the batter in a bowl by adding enough water or beer or carbonated drink to the dry ingredients. Do not overbeat. Mixture should be slightly thick so that it doesn’t pour off the fish. Leave to stand for a few minutes. The batter works without the turmeric but you’ll miss the golden colour created when cooked. 4. Heat the oil in the deep fat fryer, just below high. Leave the basket in the fryer. 5. Test the oil by spooning in a little batter into the hot oil. If it rises to the surface fairly quickly, the oil is good to go. 6. Dip the fish in the flour and place in the batter, lift out of the batter and let the extra batter run off. 7. Place one or two of the battered fish pieces into the oil very gently. They will rise to the surface. Leave to cook for 10 – 15 minutes depending on the thickness of the pieces. Once cooked lift the basket and place fish on kitchen roll to dry. Leaving the basket in the fryer is optional, if you have a good slotted spoon to lift the fish out of the batter, use this method. 8. NB Sparkling water leaves a crispy plain flavour to the fish whilst beer or carbonated drink leaves a distinct flavour/sweetness which might not be liked. 9. Always serve with lemon slices and veggies or salad. Disert in the Bluestacks by Helen Meehan

The Disert Heritage Group have organised a ‘Big Night’ (the name for local social gatherings before WWII) in Drimarone’s Bluestack Centre on the night of August 5th. Firstly there is a concert by local musicians playing mostly songs and tunes connected with the area. This will be followed by a book launch and refreshments and will end with dancing to ‘Country Traditions’. The book ‘Disert in the Bluestacks’ to be launched by local County Councillor John Campbell, is a brief account of a small area in the Bluestacks noted for its natural beauty - Disert Graveyard. The impetus in publishing this book is the desire of the Disert Heritage Group to record for posterity the history, archaeology, folklore, traditions and songs of this historic site. The Disert Heritage Group was set up in 2016 following a meeting between Dr Fiona Beglane and Helen Meehan. Fiona is an archaeology lecturer in IT Sligo. Helen taught in Frosses NS, which the pupils from the area attended after Letterfad NS was closed in the 1970s. These past pupils are now adults and many have become eager members of the Disert Heritage Group. Indeed the group is unusual in that it has a larger proportion of younger people than is the norm for historical societies. Various people have contributed to the volume. John Burke is an active walker and a member of the Bluestack Centre committee. He has been involved in recording the names of roads, streams and other places in the area. Other committee

members have shared their expertise, e.g. Rita Kerrigan, a former art teacher, has designed the cover for the book. Gerry Meehan and Raphael Meehan are both well-known on the Donegal music scene and have collected not alone words of local songs but the music for them as well. Fiona, her colleagues and students, and a number of local volunteers have carried out an archaeological survey and more is planned. Helen has gathered information on the history of Disert and the surrounding area. Michelle Ward has pulled together all the contributions and done much of the administration to bring the book together. We hope this short publication will lead to more interest in Disert and the lovely country under the shadow of Carnaween. All are welcome on the night.

Alpacas at Ardara Family Fun Day Two alpacas will feature at a special animal farm during a Family Fun Day at the Rectory, Ardara, on Saturday, August 4th. The alpacas, owned locally, will be one of the key attractions at the new event which will also include a special electric model train display inside the rectory. Gardening with Emer POTTED GARDEN Whether it’s because you only have a small outdoor area, you are living in a rented house or your garden has hostile soil, you may feel that you can’t grow the choice of plants you desire. The good news is that all plants, including trees, shrubs and roses can grow very well in pots. The beauty of growing in pots is that you can control the soil, food, water, weeds and the maximum height of your larger plants. You will have no worries about one plant smothering another or stealing the nutrients. Even pests and diseases are easier managed when dealing with potted plants. Pot gardening also allows you to change displays with the seasons. For example, potted daffodils and tulips can have pride of place in spring and then can be tucked away until next year when they are past their best.

When potting ornamental or fruit trees, you should choose a large pot with a steady base that will not blow over easily. Place some stones in the bottom of the pot to add weight and aid drainage. A mixture of topsoil and compost will suit most trees but there are exceptions that have more specific requirements, for example, Japanese Maples prefer ericaceous compost. To ensure success with your pot garden, make sure you choose plants to suit your situation. Plants for full sun will not thrive in deep shade no matter how well they are fed or watered. Keep an eye out for slugs, snails and other pests. Feed your pots regularly with a suitable fertiliser during the growing season and be careful they don’t dry out. Bishop Ken Good (Church of Ireland) is delighted to announce that he has offered Rev Lindsey Farrell the position of Bishop’s Curate in the Inver Group of Parishes and she has accepted the appointment. Lindsey is from Fermanagh and has been serving as Deacon Intern in Rossory Parish, Enniskillen. She will be ordained on Sunday 2nd September at 4pm in St. Columb’s Cathedral and will be introduced in the Inver Group of Parishes on Tuesday 4th September. Lindsey, her husband Keith and their three children will be moving into Inver Rectory in due course and are very much looking forward to their future there.

Spanish Armada Walk

La Duquesa Santa Ana re-enactment walk: Saturday 4th August 2018 The Ardara GAP Heritage and History Group and the Killybegs History and Heritage Group have come together to organise the first event that commemorates the 430th anniversary of the Spanish Armada in Donegal. The two groups are organising a 16th century style historic re-enactment walk from Kiltoorish, Rosbeg to Killybegs. Walking in the footsteps of the survivors of La Duquesa Santa Ana will be a poignant recognition and memory of the many tragedies that befell at least one of twenty-six or so Spanish Armada ships wrecked off the Atlantic coast of Ireland between September and October 1588. On the 28th/29th September 1588, the Andalusian hulk La Duquesa Santa Ana was shipwrecked off Loughros Mor Peninsula, Co. Donegal. The crew, under the captaincy of Don Alonso de Leyva, second-in-command of the entire Armada fleet, managed to scramble ashore and spent nine days in the Rosbeg and Kiltoorish areas of south west Donegal. Preparations were made to make a one day march to Killybegs and ‘a hoped for escape back to Spain’. On the 8th or 9th October the Duquesa Santa Ana survivors, accompanied by McSweeny Na Doe, a loyal Irish supporter, broke camp and traversed a terrain that would have been difficult with a mountain pass to be negotiated. Their goal was one of the three Spanish ships anchored in Killybegs. The only one left when they arrived was La Girona. La Girona set sail for Scotland on the 26th October with some 1,300 on board a ship that had the capacity of about half that number. There is evidence that up to 240 foreigners were left behind in the Killybegs area. Where did they go? La Girona sank with the loss of over one thousand lives off Lacada Point, Co. Antrim on the 28th October. It is reported that there were between five and nine survivors only. This was one of the costliest shipwrecks in the history of seafaring. Our commemorative walk will take a route along track, main and minor roads. As part of this walk, we will be placing specially commissioned stone memorials to mark this tragic human story.

Over 50 cyclists took part in the Dublin to Drimarone cycle last weekend. 60% of the money raised will go to Donegal Hospice to be used at the Palliative Care wing of Donegal Community Hospital, with remainder going to the local community organisations - Drimarone Development Association and Letterbarrow Celtic Football Club.

Ladies Congratulations to Eilish Ward and the Donegal Ladies on their fine win over Kerry at the weekend. We wish the team well against Armagh on Saturday August 4th in the All-Ireland Quarter Final. The Girls U12 Team took part in the Ulster Development Blitz in Kilcar at the weekend which was a great success. Four Masters Senior Camogie took part in the first senior blitz for many years in Donegal last Thursday in Convoy Centre of Excellence - as much an evening for catching up as playing with the skills being a bit rusty for some! The second of three blitzes takes place this Thursday in Convoy with training on Tuesday evening 8-9pm at Four Masters pitch - all senior players welcome to join. CONGRATULATIONS ... FOUR MASTERS SOUTHERN BOARD U15 ÓG SPORT CHAMPIONS. Played in Gerard Gallagher Memorial Park Mountcharles Saturday 28/07/2018. With 10 teams taking part in the tournament and two groups of 5, our boys won their group. Four Masters boys first game against Killybegs saw them win by 2-6 to 1-4. Second game played Ardara, winning by 3-6 to 2-4. Third game against Naomh Muire, won by 6-2 to 0-3. Fourth round game against a very good Aodh Ruadh team saw them win by 6-3 to 3-5, a very exciting match. Four Masters topped their group. Played a strong Dungloe team in semi finals which was neck and neck at half time, but Four Masters boys pulled away in the second half to win 6-2 to 3-5. Played Naomh Ultan in the final with a comfortable win of 7-2 to 0-4 . Andrew Monaghan accepted the cup on behalf of the 10 players in squad. Andrew had an excellent day in goals with some brilliant

Maybe it was the earlier kick-off of 10.30 or maybe it was the welcome return of Kate Keaney but when Four Masters Ladies took to the pitch on Sunday morning to meet top-of-the-table Convoy, there was a definite sense of purpose about this team on whom Lady Fortune has not shone too brightly for this season. Indeed, the small crowd who gathered to cheer them on held their breath in the opening few minutes as Convoy pinged in two quick goals before Four Masters had time to settle. But settle they did and with some determined defending from the Brady sisters and full back Rosa Devaney, Four Masters soon found their rhythm. Kate Keaney was immense in midfield, ably supported by Orla Mackel, and soon got the home team on the scoreboard with a left footed point. Convoy added five points before half time as did the Masters and when the whistle blew for half time Convoy led by 2-5 to 0-6. Encouraged on by managers Matthew Shovlin and Deirdre Dillon, the plan going back to play was to feed long, quick balls into Rachel Crawford and Aine McGroarty. Half forwards Grace Nolan and Ellie Muldoon stepped up their game and supported the mid field players very well. Four Masters was really to the fore in the second half and with some tenacious defending especially by Dionne Carr and Katie O Donnell, Convoy was held to a mere 4 points in this half. In contrast, Four Masters found their shooting legs and with goals firstly from Kate Keaney and then two from Rachel Crawford the supporters began to hope that a victory was imminent. Grace Nolan struck over some fine scores, five points in total and when at last the final whistle blew, it was the home team that emerged victorious on a score of 3-12 to 2-9. Overall, this was a great team performance, with everybody giving their utmost, right up to the final whistle. Rebecca Faulkner proved a feisty sub for Amy Jordan and Dionne Carr replaced the much improved Jennifer McIntyre, who is as comfortable in the forwards as in the backs. A huge well done to these players who have shown tremendous commitment and determination all year. Hopefully this will be the start of a steady climb upwards from down the league ladder.

Donegal Town Community Band ULSTER CHAMPIONS 2018

Donegal Town Community Band are Ulster Champions 2018 following their win in the youth section of the Marching Band Competitions at the Ulster Fleadh in Castlewellan, Co. Down on Sunday. After a very long day beginning at the Bosco Centre at 7.30am, an extremely happy band arrived back at 8.30 in the evening triumphant with their Ulster Marching Band Champions 2018 Winners Cup. The Band was greeted on the Diamond, Donegal Town by a nice crowd of family and well-wishers where they performed some of the sharp and intricate routines which won them Ulster Champions 2018. Congratulations to all the young members, a wonderful achievement and a great endorsement of all the hard work put in throughout the year but particularly coming up to competition time by leaders and trainers. The Band now set their sights on the All-Ireland Fleadh Competition in Drogheda, Co. Louth on Sunday 19th August. Wishing Donegal Town Community Band continued success and enjoyment.
