500 Jobs for Donegal
It has been announced that, as part of the ongoing expansion at Abbott Laboratories facility at Lurganboy outside Donegal Town, 500 new jobs will be created over the next number of years. At present Abbott are not revealing details of the jobs or exactly when they will be in place only to say that it is part of a multi-year project.
Road Closures for next 6 Months in Donegal Town
As part of the replacement of the Tirconnaill Bridge (“Iron Bridge”) in Donegal Town, the County Council have announced temporary road closures and a one-way system. From the Monday 30th July 2018 until Friday 14th December 2018 • Tirchonaill Street will be CLOSED as the bridge is removed. • NO THROUGH ROAD on New Row to facilitate the bridge removal and replacement. Access only to houses from the Old School Surgery to 25m from the Iron Bridge and also from Peter Kennedy Bridge junction to 5m from the Iron Bridge for houses and businesses. • Water Street to be ONE-WAY downhill only. • Castle Street to be ONE-WAY only towards the Castle • Tirchonaill Street to be ONE-WAY only from Castle Street to Bridge Street. To access the Post Office and other parts of Tirchonaill Street you will need to go down Water Street, past Magee’s Factory and up Tirchonaill Street. Returning you will have to go via the Mullans and new roundabout at Blas.

Donegal has lowest turnover of homes GeoView Residential Buildings Report The national average housing turnover rate was 2.6% in the twelve months to April 2018. Donegal had the lowest rate in the country at 1.4% followed by Monaghan and Mayo. Kildare had the highest rate of housing turnover at 3.41%.

Home cooking with Sian THREE INGREDIENTS FLATBREADS WITH MELTED CHEESE FILLING Stuck for fresh, unprocessed meal time ideas? Love baking? Then you’ll love making these cheesy flatbreads. Eat hot straight off the pan as a snack or serve at breakfast, lunch or dinner time. Fill or just top like a pizza with your choice of ingredient – really anything goes. Young children will love helping you make these flatbreads, teenagers should be able to make their own. Flatbreads (Makes 4 large flatbreads or 6 medium flatbreads) 4 heaped tblsp. SR Flour (sieved) Good pinch of salt. 3 level tblsp plain yogurt 100 – 150grms grated cheese Method 1. Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl. 2. Make a well and add the yogurt. 3. Using a metal spoon, mix the yogurt into the flour. You will find it takes time to work the yogurt through the flour. 4. Once you can’t see any of the yogurt, squeeze the mixture with your hand until you are left with a dough and the side of the bowl is clean. If at this point the mixture is too sticky, work in some more flour or if you find the mixture too dry, add drops of yogurt and work through the flour. 5. Place the dough on a slightly floured surface, knead for a few minutes. 6. Cut the dough into 4 or 6 pieces. Roll out very thinly to a circle about 24cm (8’’) diameter. Keep each uncooked flatbread in a clean tea towel to stop drying out. 7. Heat a griddle or frying pan until hot, shake off excess flour from 1 flatbread and place on the hot pan. Leave to cook on the pan for approximately 3-4 minutes or once brown and bubbly on the underneath. 8. Flip over and spread cheese on one half, fold over one half of the flatbread. Press down to melt the cheese, turn over to brown the final side of the cheesy flatbread. 9. Eat immediately or keep warm in a tea towel until the remaining flatbreads are cooked. Repeat with each flatbread. To make Flatbread pizza. 1. Once flatbreads are rolled out, place on a greased baking sheet, top with tomato sauce, your favourite cooked or raw topping and sliced, grated or torn cheese. 2. Bake for approx. 15-20 minutes. Serve immediately. Flavoured Flatbreads To the dry ingredients add 1 or more of the following: 1 teaspoon caraway seeds, 1 – 2 tsp finely chopped garlic, Pinch or two dried chilli flakes, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 2 tsp finely chopped rosemary or coriander . Donegal Town Women’s Group
The Donegal Town Women’s Group met on Friday 13th July at the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre, Tirconnell St, Donegal Town, for our weekly cuppa and chat...and delicious homemade cakes. A railway carriage was made available and we were provided with a screen depicting historic and nostalgic photos of Donegal and the railway system. The staff were so helpful and they couldn’t have done more to make us feel welcome. We were invited to visit the heritage centre/museum and see the unique array of memorabilia and artefacts from Donegal’s railway history. We would like to thank Donna and her staff for looking after us so well we wish them every success with their future plans for the centre. Patsy Pilots Super Liner into Killybegs

Local man Patsy Kelly was the pilot who guided Cunard’s liner Queen Elizabeth into Killybegs last Friday. Heading out in the pilot boat on a very overcast Donegal morning Patsy took charge of the delicate operation to guide in the largest vessel ever to dock in Killybegs. Slightly longer than the Queen Victoria
which visited Killybegs earlier this year, the Queen Elizabeth took up the entire length of the deep water pier at the entrance to Killybegs Harbour. Patsy is pictured above right with the

Dublin to Drimarone Charity Cycle This weekend, 27-29 July, over 50 cyclists will take to the road to cycle from Dublin to Drimarone to raise funds for local causes. Departing Dublin on Friday morning, this 265km cycle will finish at the Bluestack Centre, Drimarone on Sunday evening. The main benefactor, receiving 60% of money raised, is the Palliative Care Unit in Donegal Community Hospital. They will be using all money raised to purchase much needed pain relief equipment for palliative care patients. Local clubs Letterbarrow FC and Drimarone Development Association will receive 20% each, which will be used for improvements in their respective facilities. There are bucket collections in Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town and Drimarone on Sunday 29th. Please try your very best to make a donation. Gardai have no internet access Two Garda stations in the local area Ballintra and Pettigo - have no internet access which also means Gardai in the stations have to travel to another station in order to access the PULSE system which collects and stores information about crime, firearms licensing, traffic management, driving licences, insurance and character vetting. Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan, TD, said last week that an examination is currently underway to figure out a strategy for the connection of the stations nationwide which do not have internet access.

Donegal Town actors to star in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ this summer
Following the phenomenal success of last year's soldout and critically acclaimed production of 'Phantom of the Opera', Donegal Youth Musical Theatre (DYMT) are now preparing for this year's run of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. As the result of a North-West search of talent, forty successful cast members from Donegal to Belfast have been shortlisted to star in this hit production which comes to the county in August.

has been drawn to the company with the announcement of this year's gender blind cast - where the well-known roles of Judas and Herod will be played by two female actors. Joining the cast for this modern adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous rock opera are several young actors from the Donegal Town area: Conor McAllister, Anna Mitchell, Rachel Reid, Victoria Bradley, Gabriella Byrne, Helen Howells, Jennifer Martin, Susanna Martin, Jack Myres, Kian O'Donnell and Mark Meehan. The cast and crew begin intensive rehearsals on 1st August and will rehearse daily for three weeks before the production runs in An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny from 21st - 25th August. The production will be led by DYMT Director, Séimí Campbell, with musical direction by Herta Kelly, choreography by Amy Jordan and Michael Duffy and design under Sinead O'Donnell Carey. The team is joined by several international stars and coaches for this summer's production including vocal coach to Bono and The Script, Tine Verbeke, and West End and Broadway star, Fra Fee. The production was recently launched in An Grianan Theatre, and tickets are now on sale from www.angrianan.com. 2018 marks the 60th Anniversary of UN Peacekeeping and we are pleased to bring you these memories from the late Paddy Gaffney of his time as a UN Peacekeeper while in the Irish Army. They were written in 2006, two years after he went “back to education”. Thanks to Adorina Gaffney for bringing this story to us.
REFLECTIONS by Paddy Gaffney
Monday morning and the late September sunshine felt warm on my neck as I climbed the sharp incline from the roadway to the main door of The Adult Education and Training Centre. As I passed through the doorway, school bag in hand, a million thoughts were racing through my mind and I can tell you none of them were positive. The daunting task of meeting my fellow pupils and tutors was my greatest concern, as my lack of confidence, self belief and the age gap weighed heavily on my shoulders as I climbed the green terrazzo stairs which led to the classrooms. So, I can tell you that I was more than a little bit uneasy as to how I was going to get by over the next two years; that is if I lasted that long. Little did I know that I was about to meet up with a group of people who were prepared to accept me into their camp (so to speak) with open arms, and from there on to extend to me all the help and encouragement I so badly needed. After all the nervous introductions had been made I was assigned a seat at a computer and so began my first lesson on that September morning two years ago. As I sat there my mind began to wander back to the time when I first attended school as a young boy and the exciting times and the life education that I had received since leaving school the first time around. The following is a brief account of that period of my life which I have put down on paper. This is mainly due to the confidence and self belief that I have gained as a result of the two years I have spent at The Adult Education and Training Centre. My learning activity began a long time ago when I was born in a small rural
town in the midlands called Boyle in the County of Roscommon. The eldest of seven children, I was the only boy amongst six sister siblings. My early school years were marred by an accident, which left me in hospital for over a year, which meant that I missed a full term of my early school life. I completed my primary education and then at the age of fourteen I left school. This was through necessity rather than through choice, as at that time “free education” did not exist, and anyhow it was expected that the eldest would leave school when the time came, in order to get a job to help with the upbringing of the younger members of the family. FIRST JOB I worked in a grocery shop for a short while and then progressed on to working in a clothing and shoe shop. At the age of fifteen I decided to enlist in the Army; I managed to achieve this by giving a false age to the Army authorities. The minimum age for enlistment at that time was eighteen years of age, the age which still applies for recruits enlisting in the Defence Forces at present. At that time, the United Nations had requested the Government to provide Irish Troops to serve overseas in Africa, in the former Belgian Congo, as part of a United Nations Force, so the thought of serving overseas in a foreign land was uppermost in my mind when I enlisted. BASIC TRAINING After completing my basic training, which I got through easy enough, I then, as well as many others, volunteered to serve overseas. I did not rate my chances of being selected very high, but lo and behold; nine months after first enlisting, I found myself
on an American Air Force transport plane bound for Africa. My education of life was about to begin. EXCITEMENT For someone who had come from a small tightly knit community, the sight of seeing a plane (never mind the thought of travelling in one) was, to say the least, overwhelming. Before joining the Army I had never travelled outside the boundaries of our town; this of course applied to most residents as in those days - people did not venture too far from home unless they had moved to England or to America in search of work. Seeing the plane with its four massive engines at full throttle trundling down the runway for take-off, was for me the most frightening but at the same time the most exciting experience I had ever encountered. The journey itself was noisy and uncomfortable, but I did not care, as it was all an adventure to me and I savoured every minute of it. We stopped off en-route for repairs and for refuelling at Wheelus Airbase in Libya and at Kano in Nigeria. At last I had arrived in a foreign country. We spent a couple of days in each location so I was getting to see other countries that were not on the original route plan. What struck me most of all on landing in those countries was the intense heat. We were dressed in serge wool uniforms nicknamed “bull’s wool” and they were certainly not adaptable for wearing in tropical countries; however, shortly after arriving at our destination we were soon issued with a light tropical uniform, which helped us to acclimatise to the hot sticky conditions that prevailed.

The Weathervane is an exhibition of paintings and poems in the Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo, from the 24th of July until the 21st August. Donegal artist Aideen Connolly, daughter of Mary and the late Aidan Connolly, and poet Tom Morgan were inspired by the landscape of North Leitrim and Sligo to collaborate visually and poetically to explore the area in all its stunning moods. Like other parts of the North West, Sligo and Leitrim are rich in folklore, mythology, ring-forts and other geological inheritances which makes the place home. MS Artania to visit Killybegs At a ceremony in Southampton, England, on 15 November 1984, the ship was named “Royal Princess” by Princess Diana. After entering service on 19 November 1984, she cruised as Royal Princess until April 2005, when she was transferred to the control of P&O Cruises, and was renamed Artemis. In
2011, she moved to Phoenix Reisen’s fleet, under the modified name Artania. MS Artania will arrive in Killybegs at 9am on Tuesday 31st July and depart at 6pm. 1260 passengers are booked on board along with a crew of 537. The ship is 230m long with a gross weight of 44,000 tonnes.

“West Point Villa” & “Belshade”, Donegal Town
In the early 1960’s Dr Browne purchased West Point Villa from the Sweeneys as the elder Mrs Sweeney had moved into the newer house “Belshade” which had been constructed by her son Jack and his wife in the early 1940s. Belshade sat on a raised portion of the site overlooking the older West Point Villa. Dr Browne later married Doreen Gallagher. The National Monuments Service lists West Point Villa in the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, describing it as a detached five-bay single-storey house with attic, built about 1850 and altered around 1890. It is stated by them: “this interesting house… retains much of its early form and character. Its architectural integrity is enhanced by the retention of much of its early fabric including timber sliding sash windows and a natural slate roof. Of particular interest is the unusual timber joinery to the window to the advanced gable-fronted bay, which helps add some decorative interest to this otherwise plain vernacular-type building.” The house was built by Lord Arran for his Land Agent in the early nineteenth century. Originally it may have been known as West Rock Cottage due to its location near to Doonan Rock; Joshua Jackson was agent in the 1880’s. By the time Alexander Kyle was agent and harbour master and was living there, it was known as West Point Villa. In 1928 while blasting operations were taking place in the nearby Doonan Quarry, a large rock was propelled through the roof causing considerable damage to the roof and a ceiling of a bedroom, which fortunately was unoccupied at the time and no one was hurt. John Sweeney, cattle dealer, auctioneer and J. P. was the next occupying it in the early part of the twentieth century and the Sweeneys were still living in the house when his son John Grant “Jack” Sweeney married Eileen Mabel Hynes in 1941. At this time Jack built “Belshade”, known locally as “Sweeney’s” with its famous daffodil-lined drive. He lived there until his death and Eileen continued to live in the house until her death in 2012, since that time it has been unoccupied. Both houses have now been demolished as part of the works to construct a new retail park for Donegal Town.

Along with seven other tourism companies from Ireland, Lisa, pictured at centre above, travelled to Florida to join Tourism Ireland at the annual Global Travel Marketplace. This three-day event involved one-toone appointments and networking sessions, enabling the representatives from Ireland to meet, and do business with, top travel
advisors from North America. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America said, “Last year, we welcomed 1.8 million North American visitors to Ireland. Locked in Love on Donegal Bridge Is this the start of a trend?
A growing number of locks have been spotted attached to the railings on the stone bridge in Donegal Town. The practice was famously started in Paris where attaching a “love lock” on to the Pont des Arts bridge before throwing the key into the River Seine beneath has been a tradition for some years. The trend has spread to famous bridges in other cities, notably the Ha’penny Bridge in Dublin. It seems now to have reached Donegal Town where a lock in place since April has recently been joined by a companion.

Gardening with Emer MIND YOUR FRUIT As we are nearing the end of summer, the excitement of autumn’s harvest is around the corner. To avoid disappointment, it is good to be aware of a few pests and diseases that affect fruit trees. These can be easily remedied but if left untreated can be detrimental to both the plant and your yield. Common pests to keep an eye out for include aphids, caterpillars, wasps and birds. Aphids congregate in large numbers on the soft tips of the buds and branches. They suck the sap, distorting the growth. Caterpillars can usually be found on the underneath of a leaf, sometimes disguised along the leaf vein when small. Their signature holes in the middle of the leaves can identify them even if they cannot be seen. Organic control for aphids includes mixing washing up liquid in water and spraying it generously on infected leaves and branches. Caterpillars can be picked off at dusk, when they are
most active. Alternatively, a chemical pesticide suitable for food crops can be applied to the leaves to kill both. Wasps and birds tend to target ripe fruit. They can be deterred with netting or mesh. Fruit trees are susceptible to a number of fungal diseases including canker, scab and brown rot. Canker infects a plant through a cut or broken branch. It causes die back of a branch from the tip. Scab and brown rot can be identified by brown fungus on the fruit, leaves and stems. If you notice any of these, remove the affected growth as spores will overwinter in the soil and re-infect next year. Prune your fruit trees at the correct time to avoid stress. Keep your trees healthy by ensuring they have adequate feed and water throughout the year. Donegal GAA star Michael Murphy will be joining the team in Specsavers, Donegal Town, on Thursday, 26 July from 10 – 2pm in a bid to raise money for The Hope Foundation. Michael will be meeting young and old fans and will have pen in hand if any young autograph hunters are in with their jerseys! In addition to this, Ocean FM’s The Francie Boylan Show, hosted by Francie Boylan and Michelle Gildea, will be broadcast live from the store from 11am to 2pm bringing an electric atmosphere for customers. The store is encouraging customers of all ages to pop in on Thursday where they will be raffling off a five-foot Donegal supporting teddy bear. Customers will be invited to buy guesses of the teddy's name for €2 for their chance of winning this prized possession. Seniors - The Reserves played valiantly on Sunday vs Glenfin to bring the game to a draw. The Seniors were unfortunate to lose by one point in their game vs Glenfin.
Both teams now play Realt na Mara Bundoran on Sunday in Bundoran. Ladies - The U16 girls play St Eunans on Tuesday evening in Letterkenny at 7pm. Cúl Camp will take place August 13th-17th. You can book on line to secure a place. The club are taking names for tickets for the Donegal-Tyrone game on Wednesday July 25th from 8.30pm to 9.30pm in the clubhouse.

The seniors recorded a good away win in Killybegs on Sunday last. Scores came from Declan Mc Cafferty 1-0, Dara Brogan 0-5, Callum Gallagher 0-3, Pauric Gormley 0-1. Best of luck to NaomhBrid/ Pettigo in the County U16 final this weekend. Ethan Mangan will captain the side. Time and venue to be confirmed. They will take on Naomh Padraig/ Robert Emmett on Sunday 29th July. There was no overall winner of this week’s lotto draw. The jackpot now stands at €1,050 . The Minor Team were defeated by Burt in the Championship. The Club hosted a very successful Cúl Camp last week. Well done to all the coaches and children who participated in the camp. The Point 10k Charity Fun Run/Walk The Point 10k Charity Fun Run/Walk returns this year on Saturday 4th August. Registration from 9am at Dunkineely Methodist Hall with Run/Walk starting at 11am sharp. The two main beneficiaries this year are the Darragh Daly Rehabilitation Fund and The Bruckless Community Centre Renovation Fund. There will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the duration of The Point 10k in the grounds of the Methodist Hall in Dunkineely thanks to Born to Bounce and Laura from Face and Body Art Donegal. South Donegal Pony Club Pony Club members enjoyed a fantastic action packed camp last week near Markree Castle in Co Sligo. Three of our youngest members were awarded their E Test and all improved their riding skills and had a huge amount of fun.
