Refurbishment work will enhance offering with bright new look

By Margaret Gallagher The Society of St Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop Donegal Town is currently closed for renovation. Work on the building started this week with the contractor Liam Duffy moving in with a target of six weeks to have work complete. The Water Street Shop which is a parish building has housed the SVP thrift shop for over forty years, with the Snooker Club next door. The shop will have its floor replaced, the ceilings dropped and a facelift on the front facade with three new display windows.

Following on there will be a professional shop fit-out and overall the SVP thrift shop will become a bright modern state of the art building.

work here and the shop is growing all the time. Our customers have expressed their disappointment at the shop closing for renovation, not only for the shopping but also the social aspect where people meet, talk and browse for hours through the stock.”

During the renovation clothes will be accepted and can be dropped at the side door but no furniture to be left.

In the basement where furniture is displayed, the stock will be stored while construction work continues upstairs.

“We hope to be back up and running at the end of August and we will revisit our opening hours,” Frank concluded.

181 Registrations Down 9.6% in Donegal as 182 Sales Begin

Official figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) last week show that nationally new car registrations in the 181 period (January to June) were down by 4.5% to 87,151 cars while in County Donegal the figures show a 9.6% decline down to 1,840 cars compared to the same period in 2017.

New Light Commercial Vehicle registrations (LCV) were up nationally by 5.7% to 16,633 compared to the 171 period. Meanwhile new Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HGV) have seen an increase nationally in June but are down 1.1% to 1,571 year to date.

Imported Used Cars have shown an increase of 11.5% for the month of June 2018 (8,142) when compared to June 2017 (7,304) while in the year to date are 12.8% (51,879) ahead of 2017 (46,002) Commenting on the figures SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan stated “While June has seen a decline in new car registrations of 10.4%, registrations in this month are relatively small numbers as many consumers will have waited for a

The 5 top selling car brands so far this year in Ireland were: Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford and Nissan.

The top selling 181 models were: Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Skoda Octavia.

The top selling car in June was the Opel Corsa.

HOUSE OF STORIES will take place on Friday 13th July (third Friday) in the Coach House Bar from 8pm - 11pm. All welcome.

DONEGAL TOWN SHOWJUMPING will take place at Billy Graham’s farm beside The Holmes Beach on 15th July. With the weather being so dry and warm, the show field should be in excellent condition for good competitive showjumping.

The MOUNTCHARLES COMMUNITY WALKERS meet every Wednesday in the village at 10am for a walk in the locality and a cup of tea after the walk. Gaeltacht Tourism Officer

Donegal County Council are looking for applicants to fill the post of Gaeltacht Tourism Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for a number of projects, marketing, developing and promoting Gaeltacht areas in Donegal. This will be a two year contract and the closing date for completed applications is Friday July 20th.

Diggers are back this week on the site of Thomas and Norah Gallagher at the Mullans, Donegal Town. Phase 1 of the development was completed in March with the introduction of a new roundabout.

Norah told the Eye on Donegal that the diggers have moved back in to prepare the site for the next phase which will take about eight to ten weeks.

By Margaret Gallagher On Danny McMenamin’s farm out in Clarlougheske the good weather has caused the land to dry up to such an extent that Danny told the Eye this week that during his sixty years farming he has not seen water as scarce for his sheep or the water levels so low.

He is thankful for the trickle of water which flows from a neighbouring farm through a brook.

Danny recalls how he drank the best cold water ever from a spring well which bubbles from the granite rock on the face of the Barnes mountain at Casinwadie. It is a natural spring which has not been touched and was a welcomed drink stop for all the local sheep farmers while herding their flock on the hills at Barnesmore. He said that he often yearns for a drink of this spring water especially during the recent high temperatures but explained the climb is now too steep for him.

Donegal’s Oldest Person Passes Away The funeral took place earlier this week of Bridget Greene, Ardsbeg, Gortahork.

Bridget was Donegal’s oldest person at 106 years old and would have celebrated her 107th birthday in August. Bridget was predeceased by her husband Barney and son James. She is survived by her four sons and two daughters. She has 29 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Bridget was honoured last year as Donegal’s oldest person by President Michael D Higgins.

As reported in the Eye on Donegal of 3rd May, the business survey was carried out by Deputy Pringle in recent months and gathered over 100 responses from businesses in Donegal.

Speaking to the Taoiseach, Deputy Pringle said “results from my business survey show that over 80% of local businesses surveyed in Donegal are worried about depopulation and the retreat of rural services. They are aware that all around them post offices, garda stations and even banking facilities are closing down caused by the anti-rural sentiment pervasive in Fine Gael quarters.

“I’m not talking about businesses ready to export or IDA sponsored companies.

I’m talking about the local coffee shops, hairdressers, butchers, furniture shops or newsagents, businesses that will never be primed for export.”

“These are the businesses that are largely left outside Government supports yet are the drivers of local economic growth creating sustainable local employment across rural communities and helping to retain rural populations as a result.

Supports don’t have to be financial, they can assist in vital networking between businesses and across sectors such as tourism and retail.”

Traditional Music & Dancing Summer Sessions 2018 In Frosses Hall every Wednesday

This unique event is now in its fifteenth year and has been growing in popularity since it was started by the Frosses branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann. It grew out of a realisation that in summertime many family members returned from abroad to spend some time with their own ones in Donegal. This, coupled with the influx of visitors wanting to experience Irish music and dance in an informal homely setting, led to the sessions moving from their winter pub venue to the community hall. Here the extra floor space meant that dancing could be accommodated also. The hall, which has been recently renovated and decorated, is ideal.

The Frosses branch of Comhaltas is joined by visiting musicians on the stage. Many musicians with local connections who live in America and England enjoy playing their tunes with the group. The added element of dance makes the music available to those who don’t play but love the musical heartbeat of the Irish traditional genre.

Clement Gallagher is the man who assumes the role of “Fear an Ti” every

night. He has an expert, easy manner in encouraging dancers to try the Donegal two-hand dances such as Highlands, Barndances and Shoe the Donkey. Some ceili and sets are included. Clement has recently revived forgotten and seldom performed dances and there is a sense of fun and laughter as everyone tries them out together.

The musicians and dancers are supported by a hardworking committee who provide an excellent supper on the night. A cup of tea is enjoyed with a plentiful supply of scones and jam, homemade breads and cakes. Indeed this is when most of the chat and catching up is done!

The entertainment is available to everyone and all are welcome to come along with their family and visitors. There is a “Céad míle faílte” waiting for you every Wednesday in July and August from 9 pm to 11.30. pm. At only €6 it’s the best entertainment around.

July is the optimum month for taking softwood cuttings of shrubs and evergreen hedging. Why not take the opportunity this year to see if you can increase the number of your favourite plants for free!?

When choosing a parent plant make sure it is healthy and not under any stress, as this will affect the viability of the cuttings Water it well the evening before and check it for signs of pests or disease.

Using sharp, clean bladed secateurs cut the tip of a branch to a length of roughly 4 inches. The cut should be at a slant directly below a leaf node. The tip of a branch possesses more growth hormone, meaning it can produce roots quicker. The slanted cut serves two purposes. It allows water to run away from a forming leaf bud on the parent plant and it gives the cutting a greater surface area under the soil to absorb water and produce roots.

Fill a seed tray with seed and cutting compost. Water it well and poke holes in the soil with a the tip of a pencil to a depth

of 1½ -2 inches. You will be putting your cutting into these holes so allow sufficient space between them to ensure adequate air flow between the plants.

Remove the bottom leaves of the cutting, leaving two or three on the tip. Dip the bottom inch into rooting gel or powder. This promotes root growth and prevents the rotting of the stem. Place your cuttings carefully in the holes and stabilise them by securing the compost around the stem.

Heat and humidity are essential for good rooting so place your tray under a plastic cover on a bright windowsill or in a polytunnel or greenhouse. Rooting will take approximately 8 weeks so try to avoid checking them too often as you will compromise the humidity by removing the cover.

Official opening of “Chapman’s

Last Friday night saw the official opening of the new dining experience in the Central Hotel, Donegal Town - “Chapman’s Restaurant”.

The restaurant has been named after the famous mosaic on the street outside the hotel which has been in place since Robert S Chapman had a Pharmacy in the same building back in the late 1800s.

We at The Eye were delighted to receive invitations to this event as, in a strange co‑incidence Herbert Coburn, grandfather of the publisher of this magazine, worked for Mr Chapman as a pharmacist in the very same building before going on to set up his own pharmacy in the premises now occupied by Britton’s Pharmacy.

Home cooking with Sian CHICKEN FAJITAS (IRISH STYLE)

Serves 4 Fajita is a delicious spicy Mexican filling for wraps, tortillas baskets or with crunchy nachos. The dish is usually finished with any of the following - shredded lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, cheese, guacamole, limes. Like hot? Simply add more Tabasco sauce or chilli powder - keep stirring and tasting before adding too much heat – whoops too late! - add milk, cream or even some coconut milk and make chicken fajita pasta or use to fill tortilla baskets.

Ingredients 4 chicken breasts (trimmed and sliced into 6 -8 even pieces per fillet) 2 onions (sliced finely) 2 red bell peppers (deseeded and sliced into similar size pieces as chicken) 3 tsp smoked paprika 3tsp garlic powder 3 tsp coriander powder 1 tsp cumin powder 1 tsp chilli powder (or 5- 6 drops Tabasco sauce or 1tblsp sweet chilli sauce) 1 lime (juice) 1 - 2 tblsp olive or rapeseed oil Pinch or two of salt.

4 large tortillas or 8 small or 4 medium tortilla baskets Method Place all the ingredients except the tortillas into a large bowl. Cover with cling film and leave in the fridge to marinade for 20 minutes to 2 hours.

In a large saucepan, heat a little oil and gently lift the marinated chicken and vegetables into the hot frying pan. Cook, stirring to prevent sticking and burning. It will take approximate 12–15 minutes to cook the chicken depending on the size of the pieces.

Heat up the tortillas in a microwave, dry frying pan or oven.

Place the warm tortillas on a plate and transfer the chicken fajitas into a warm serving bowl.

Serve with all or any of the ingredients/dishes in introduction.

Chicken Fajita Pasta – replace the tortillas with hot cooked pasta. Add 300 ml chicken stock and 150ml milk or cream to the cooked chicken fajita. Stir in hot cooked pasta. Serve immediately.

If you have a chance, reach out for last week’s tortilla recipe and again, encourage the children to mix and roll. For a change: Instead of cooking the tortillas on a griddle or frying pan which means cooking one at a time, bake all the tortillas in an oven after rolling to make tortilla baskets. Bake tortillas in greased heat proof cereal bowls to make bowl shapes and fill with the cooked fajita mix.

Donegal… on the crest of a wave at Seafest Donegal County Council was delighted to be part of Ireland’s national maritime festival SeaFest which attracted 103,416 visitors to Galway Harbour during the three day event, last weekend.

Donegal County Council had a Donegal Tourism branded marquee on the Central Pier in Galway showcasing our beautiful county and all the many maritime projects that the council is involved in, such as Cool Route (promoting cruising from Cork, up to Donegal and onwards to Norway), Malin Waters (encouraging visitors to Sail, Experience and Explore the North West of Ireland and Northern Ireland), Wild Sea Europe and WAOH – Wildsea Atlantic Ocean Heritage Route and CAPITEN (European Destinations promoting our maritime tourism innovations).

A record 50,000 visitors flocked to Galway Harbour and Docks for the final day of SeaFest 2018.

Another liner cruises into Killybegs

Last week’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open held at Ballyliffin has led to a €100,000 donation to the Donegal Hospice.

The funds were jointly raised by the European Tour, Rory Foundation, Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and Ballyliffin Golf Club.

The “Rory Foundation” hosted this year’s Irish Open on the Glashedy Links course at Ballyliffin. Speaking at the press conference Rory McIlroy said “it’s really what we wanted to do, make a difference in the community that we’re playing in, and it’s nice to be a part of that.”

He continued “to be able to donate €100,000 to the hospice, I think is a tremendous achievement.”

Tidy Towns update

Donegal Town Tidy Towns Committee and Donegal Town Community Chamber CLG would like to clarify the arrangements regarding the upkeep of the Old Abbey Graveyard. Following a discussion in early June of this year it was agreed that Donegal County Council would organise to have their section of the graveyard maintained until the end of the summer season.

Donegal Town Community Chamber CLG Community Employment participants would continue to upkeep the area designated to them as has been the normal practice during 2018.

We would like to thank Donegal County Council local elected members for their assistance and support with this matter. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Community Employment participants, Donegal Town Tidy Towns workers and the volunteers who continue to work tirelessly throughout the year in their own areas to keep Donegal Town looking its best for all our locals and visitors.

As a group we are always looking for new volunteers to help us continue with our efforts to have Donegal Town looking its best at all times. Following on from publishing an old photo of Rossylongan House, in an earlier issue of The Eye, we received this fascinating piece of history researched and compiled by James McDaid, Finadoose.

The Horstman Mystery at Rossylongan House

Kistor of Germany, furnishing him with an order of £24 8s 8d, for a quantity of china and porcelain ornaments and figurines from that company. He attended the sales at Cumber-Claudy to look for a horse.

Afterwards he mentioned in conversion that he saw nothing good enough. He wanted to get the best thoroughbred that money could buy.

COUNTRY LIFE They arrived at Rossylongan in the spring of 1903, a fine looking gentleman and his new bride. Mr and Mrs Horstman. He was German and she was Annie Engel from Liverpool Road London, the only daughter of a wealthy merchant.

They had taken a lease of ten years, at £125 per year, on the estate of Mr J E B Bevan JP, which included Rossylongan House the modest demesne about the house, paddock, gardens etc. They had a first class livery with a coachman, gardeners and staff of indoor servants.

The location of Rossylongan House itself was in a beautiful situation overlooking Donegal Bay to the west of Donegal Town.

The residence had well laid out gardens, lawns and conservatories and at the lower reach of the large garden a brook, which in one place opened up to form a miniature lake.

The Horstmans settled down to life at Rossylongan, with Mr Horstman conducting himself like a country squire, by his outward show and behaviour. His only occupation and main pastime seemed to be driving around the countryside of Donegal.

Described as very reserved and almost moody in his disposition, often he would take the train to Derry and while waiting, he was known to walk up and down the platform of Donegal Station taking not the slightest notice of anyone.

Despite this he and his young bride seemed to have endeared themselves to the locals. They were said to be extremely agreeable to the people around them. He appeared to be a gentleman of unlimited means and generous to a fault. He was described as a young man aged in his midthirties, of splendid physique and excellent

address, wearing glasses and kid boots.

He soon gained hosts of admirers and established himself in the full confidence of tradesmen and shopkeepers whom he honoured with his orders and in whose books he had large credit.

All who knew him considered him as a wealthy and open-handed country gentleman, who a week or so before Christmas of 1903, handed out a £5 note to be spent in entertaining the children of the town at Christmas. They also knew him as a gentleman of such musical ability that, upon occasions, he was able to preside at the Parish Church organ.

NEW TRANSPORT No sooner had he settled in Rossylongan than Horstman went to Messrs T Young & Sons of Derry and ordered from them a landau, a brougham and a trap, all to the highest specification. When the account for these was presented it was promptly paid by cheque on the Belfast Bank. A Londonderry clothier with whom he had a number of transactions was also promptly paid in a most efficient and satisfactory manner. He purchased an American organ which he also got in Derry, on an instalments system; all payments were regularly paid up.

In September 1903, Horstman honoured Robert S Chapman, Apothecary and General Dealer, Donegal Town, when he requested Chapman to become an agent for

PROFESSIONAL COURTESY CALL On Wednesday 30th December 1903 Inspector Bartels of Scotland Yard, accompanied by Mr F W Margrett of Grand Hotel Building, Trafalgar Square and four detectives, left London for the overnight mail boat for Kingstown and from there to a small town on the north-west coast of Ireland. When he arrived, Inspector Bartels paid a professional courtesy call on the local Sergeant of the RIC in Donegal Town. He had with him a warrant for the arrest of a man called Max Franks. Margrett was along with Bartels to identify Franks, as he was wanted in Germany for embezzlement and obtaining goods under false pretence.

They made their way to Rossylongan House and at the early hour of 3am on Thursday 31st December 1903, Horstman was interrupted from his sleep and arrested on the foot of the warrant for Max Franks.

In reply to the warrant Horstman said “can’t understand this; I can’t imagine who has made these charges”.

On being arrested Horstman did not appear greatly troubled. He and Inspector Bartels drove in one of Horstman’s splendid carriages to the town. It was only when he reached the police barracks, where the formal charge was made, that he showed any embarrassment.

The news of the arrest quickly spread, a hopeful feeling prevailing amongst the traders and shopkeepers in Donegal that a terrible mistake was made, that a gentleman of such respectability and affluence could not be the person who was wanted on such charges of fraud and embezzlement. They hoped and prayed, most of whom he would have been in debt to, that a serious mistake had been made, and that Mr Horstman was not the Max Franks wanted by the German and London police.

After his arrest the house was closed and a police guard placed on it for fear some might take things into their own hands and try and recover goods to the value owed.

Famous Five go golfing

Garda sergeant Tony Cornyn who retired from An Garda Sióchána last week pictured (far left) at the Irish Open in Ballyliffin with Francis Brogan, Sean Diver, John Meehan and Cllr Martin Harley. Tony retired after 35 years with An Garda Sióchána and was one of the most popular members of the force in the area having been stationed in Donegal Town since November 2005. A native of Co. Leitrim he was involved with the Four Masters GAA club, a keen golfer on the greens out at Murvagh and also has a huge interest in farming. Tony’s many friends and work colleagues wish him health and happiness in his retirement.

New clinic to open in Killybegs

By Margaret Gallagher Physio Eireann continues to go from strength to strength with the opening of a new fulltime state of the art clinic in Killybegs next Monday 16th July. The new premises will open on the Shore Road, Killybegs beside McLoone Butchers with hours of business, Monday to Friday 9am - 6pm.

Physio Eireann opened their first clinic in Ardara in 2014 and Donegal Town in January 2016. There are three practitioners now working between the three clinics, Ciara, Ollie and Elaine and the team deals with a full range of injuries and conditions. Pilates classes will also take place in the new clinic.

Ollie told the Eye on Donegal that their business is expanding all the time and the Killybegs clinic will accommodate people from Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolmcille which has a direct bus route to Killybegs, and also the people from Killybegs. “We do home visits for people who are house bound and for patients just after surgery.” Ollie said.

Donegal Association present €4,490 to Lifford Hospital On Tuesday, 3rd of July members of the Donegal Association along with current Donegal Person of the Year Shay Given were in Lifford Hospital to present the proceeds of the raffle from the Gala Ball. The total amount raised was €4490.95.

Four Masters Notes CAMOGIE U16s and Minors have both started their leagues with away trips to Burt and Carndonagh, unfortunately no wins yet.

U12s are finished their league and will have a finals day in a few weeks. Senior camogie training on Tuesday evening 8.30pm. This is open to any girls born 2002 and before - up to any age!! This fun league will hopefully be starting soon.

Cúl Camp The annual Cúl camp takes place in Tir Conaill Park from Monday July 30th to Friday August 3rd. The camp is open to boys and girls aged 6-13 years of age.

Thank you Dew Drop Inn Bar are the Drumbar United Interfirms Brendan Cassidy Memorial Cup Winners 2018. At full time the score was Dew Drop Inn 1, Happi Taxis 1. There were no goals in extra time. After a penalty shoot-out decider Dew Drop Inn won 4-2.

Naomh Ultan The Senior Team had a splendid victory over Moville in the League Game played at Dunkineely on Saturday evening. The only drawback was an injury to full forward Alan Lyons. Hopefully he will be back in action soon.

The U-14 Team had mixed fortunes during the week losing to Kilcar and defeating Killybegs in the League.

DONEGAL TOWN SHOWJUMPING Holmes 15 July 2018 Preparations are well under way for this year’s show at Billy Graham’s farm beside The Holmes Beach. With the weather being so dry and warm, the show field should be in excellent condition for good competitive showjumping.

Jumping commences at 10am and will run throughout the day with classes for novice horses right up to the last event which is a Mini Grand Prix.

So come along to a great family day out and witness the fantastic spectacle of horses and riders going through their paces.

Naomh Brid Notes SENIOR A depleted Naomh Brid struck late against Red Hughs to secure a share of the spoils.

The sides drew an entertaining division 3 league league affair at killygordon, Naomh Brid 0-10 to Red Hughs 1-7. Scores came from Dara Brogan 0-5, Ross Gallagher 0-3, Gary McCafferty 0-3.

RESERVE The reserve team had a disappointing performance when they went down to a hungier Red Hughs. The home side got out of the traps early and led by 1-9 to 0-5 at halftime.

Red Hughs got the first score of the game shortly after the break to open up a eight point gap. This was addressed by Pauric Mc Daid, Pauric Gormley, response with scores. Unfortunately, Red Hughs picked up the pace and found scores to kill the match. Pauric McDaid scored 7 points. Final score:Naomh Brid 0-9 Red Hughs 1-17.

U14S The u14s played their last game of the league against St Naul’s at home on Friday evening.

They got off to a great start with goals from Mickey Harron and Liam Given and were leading at halftime 2-3 to 1-3. St Naul’s got

back into the game in the second half and scored 2-2 without reply. Naomh Brid replied with three goals in quick succession scored

by Adam Lyons (2) and Liam Gallagher which left them a point up with with 15 minutes to go. St Naul’s responded with 2 goals back to back which left the Naomh Brid men with a lot of work in the last 10 minutes and finished the game by scoring 2 points which was cancelled out by St Naul’s who also scored five points to leave the full time score in favour of St Naul’s. A great team display and also great performances from Adam Burr, Tadhg Mc Garrigle, Donal Gallagher, Liam Given, Liam Gallagher and Adam Lyons.

LOTTO There was no overall winner of this week’s lotto draw. The jackpot now stands at €7,200. The numbers drawn were 1, 10, 12, 13, 16. The €25 euro winners were Eamon Mc Calliog, Sean M Quinn, Margaret O’Loughlin, Arlene Walsh. The next draw will take place in the Bay Bush Bar, Ballintra, on the 16th July 2018.

Donegal Town F.C. held its Summer Soccer Camp last week at the Hospital Field. A fantastic week was enjoyed by all with over one hundred children taking part. The sun shone and the action was equally impressive with some fantastic skills on show. The club would like to thank Seamus Hannafin for the great work he did on the pitch prior to the camp, as it was in superb condition. We would also like to thank all our coaches, who volunteered their time during the week. Over 25 coaches took part during the week and without whom the camp would not have been possible. Thanks to Brian Ward, Paddy Martin and Paul Keeney for working the car park and also to Frank Sweeney, James Canny and Anne Marie Byrne who helped with registrations.

Finally to our campers, a massive thank you for your attitude and effort all week which was the main reason the camp was such a success. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year.
