This Saturday, 7th July, will once again see hundreds of bikers turn out to support “Sandra’s Run” - now in its 13th year. Named in memory of Sandra Boyle who died in 1991 after a three year battle with leukaemia, the annual event follows a route around County Donegal from Killybegs. Organised by Sandra’s parents Rosaleen and Jim Boyle, funds will be raised this year for the Temple Street Foundation with a
donation to Killybegs Town Development. The first Sandra’s Run in 2005 had just 14 bikes - by last year’s event this had grown to 320 bikers on everything from scooters to trikes to a selection of motorbikes from all counties of Ireland and further afield. Famously now trees, fences, gates, doors and other items along the route have teddy bears and other stuffed toys attached to them in memory of Sandra.
In total over the years Sandra’s Run has raised over €250,000 for good causes and it is hoped that this year’s event will make a significant contribution to the Temple Street charity. This year’s route will first head to Kilcar before coming back through Killybegs to Donegal Town and then on to Fintown before making its way back to Killybegs via Glenties and Ardara.

Rory Gallagher of “The Revs” and son of “Paul & Mary B” who is perhaps even more famous for “Jimmy’s Winning Matches” which became the anthem of Donegal GAA, has announced that he is leaving the Island Bar in Lanzarote and returning home to Donegal with his wife Cara and child. September 30th will see Rory play his final gig in the Island Bar on he which took out a 5-year lease in 2013. He has spent a total of 12 years in Lanzarote and describes the time he spent there as an “absolute thrill”. Now expecting their second child, Rory and Cara will return home in October. Rory mother’s “Mary B”, formerly of Pluto, is part of the line-up for Harvey’s Point’s famous cabaret this season as is his uncle Jody Gallagher. Arriving in Lanzarote with only €20, Rory played many gigs in the “Brian Boru”, “Buddy’s Bar”, “Charlie’s” and the “Craic n Ceol” before opening the Island Bar with Cara in March 2013. Rory said, “I hope when people remember their holidays they think fondly of the fun they had in there as we tried to make it like a live music version of what Cream was in Ibiza in the 1990s. “I want to thank everyone so much for all their support,” Rory concluded.

Daniel for the Hall of Fame Daniel O’Donnell has earned his place in the Scandinavian Hall of Fame for his charity work. The ceremony will take place at the Norse Hostfest in Kakota where he will be performing. He will be receiving their Humanitarian Award as a Hostfest performer and for his work for charitable causes and his notable contribution to the Romanian Challenge
Appeal which has raised more than €700,000. Daniel will be formally inducted in September and will join such famous names as Buzz Aldrin and Charles Lindberg. Places in the Hall of Fame are usually only for persons of Norse descent but Daniel has been specially selected.

On Saturday 4th August there will be a RE‑ENACTMENT WALK for the 430th Anniversary of the Spanish Armada 1588 2018. Come walk with historic re-enactors in the footsteps of the 900 survivors of La Duquesa Santa Ana from Kiltoorish (Rosbeg) to Killybegs. This is a family friendly event. Walk duration and length approx 30km (8hrs or walk what you can). Registration will take place at Ardara Community Centre from 8.30am to 9am. Bus transfers to / from start / finish. More wind turbines
This week An Bord Pleanála has given the go-ahead for a wind farm close to Barnesmore Gap. Cork based Planree Ltd. have been granted permission for nineteen wind turbines in the townlands of Meenbog, Croaghonagh and Cashelnavean. At a meeting of Donegal County Council in February councillors voted to object to the wind farm but admitted the final decision was out of their hands. The councillors’ proposal to object to the plans went against the Council planners recommendation which was the go ahead but with sixteen conditions attached. The planners favoured the wind farm because of the community gain element and said the Council would receive €2.5million in local funding over the 30 years from contributions. The wind farm will provide employment for 80 people, including 60 during construction and most workers and materials will be sourced locally. It was agreed to grant permission for the development with 21 conditions attached. A traffic management plan will also have to be submitted before construction and an ecologist will have to survey the land. Agreement must be reached with Irish Water on access to Lough Mourne.

Memories of Another Summer

The sun is shining, the weather is beautiful, but not that long ago most of us were complaining as we thought the winter would never end. Some have said that when it comes to weather this has been a year of extremes. But this is by no means unique with other years being very different to what we might consider normal Irish weather. If you remember back to 1995 it was also an unusually hot summer. Recently I was reading some of my late grandfather, Alfred Berry’s, personal weather records from 1995 and it seems that in this year spring also arrived very late with limited grass growth by the end of April. St Patrick’s Day brought a west-northwest gale with very violent gusts in the afternoon. I remember losing the top of our mature palm tree that day in our garden as well as other trees being blown over locally. March that year also brought us very heavy snow, the heaviest snowfall my grandfather ever recalls since he moved to Lough Eske in the 1960s. I measured thirteen inches of snow on my grandparents’ lawn at Lough Eske and from 4-6 inches around Donegal Town. I recall walking the two mile trek to National School with my sister as the normal school bus wasn’t running only to be sent home an hour later as less than half the students had arrived. It took three weeks for the snow to completely melt away at Greenan, Lough Eske. On the 12th of May I recall waking up to a heavy snow shower after staying the night with my grandparents. The newly formed foliage on their mature Horse Chestnut, Japanese Maple and Norway Maple trees were particularly beautiful as the early
morning sunlight glistened on the snow. These trees are normally leafless when we experience snowfall. There was also a heavy hail shower later that afternoon in the Lough Eske area. July brought a change, starting warmer and mostly dry and the warm weather continued well into August. There was even an unusual summer thunderstorm that lasted a good hour on the 10th of July at Lough Eske by which time our own decapitated palm tree had happily resprouted with over seventy new shoots all the way up the eight foot stem. Hot summer weather continued with long standing records being broken nearly every day. My grandfather recorded that the temperature would peak around 83° Fahrenheit (28.3° C) in the afternoon shade at his home and that there were hardly any of the troublesome midges left throughout their densely wooded garden. It would be the 24th of August before any substantial rain would fall. 1995 brought us a white Christmas, one I particularly remember as we sledged daily with friends down a nearby steep hill up until New Year. The year ended with eight consecutive days of snow. There was frost virtually day and night. This week also saw record-breaking low temperatures in Scotland reaching -4° Fahrenheit (-19.7° C) in Glasgow on the 29th of December and -17° Fahrenheit (-27° C) at Altnahara in the north of Scotland which my grandfather notes as possibly an all-time record for these islands. If this year follows 1995 perhaps there is still plenty of warm weather to come and maybe even a white Christmas too!

Mountcharles Opera Festival
In 2008, Deborah Cunningham had the idea of an evening of music at Salthill Gardens. She roped in her husband, Gerry and her good friend Ethna Sneddon and, along with Elizabeth Temple, what has now become known as The Mountcharles Opera Festival, came to be. That first year, Ethna single handedly made sure of a capacity audience, by selling tickets to anyone and everyone she thought might be interested as well as securing funding for a piano. Gerry co-ordinated the parking while manning the ‘box office’ and Deborah’s mother came down from Carrigart to help serve wine, along with one or two other friends. The evening was a huge success and it became clear, very quickly, that there is a definite demand for opera and classical music in south Donegal.
Paul Martin and Evan McGarrigle came on board in 2009 and things have gone from strength to strength since. These two talented gentlemen, along with Deborah, are the core of the event and between them decide on a programme which will appeal to as many as possible, while bringing diversity and interest. At this stage they know their audience well, and have a strong idea of what will work. The majority of that audience might know a little about opera and classical music, but such effort is put into deciding on the programme, that everyone will go away having recognised at least one piece. In 2011 The Bluestack Chorale was formed to bring a further element to the evening. This small chamber choir was hand-picked for their ability and experience
and while there have been one or two changes over the years, it’s still made up of most of the original members. The first performance for the Chorale was Fauré’s Requiem and their repertoire has grown dramatically since, covering everything from early sacred music right up to modern Disney songs! An event like this can only survive and grow with lots of dedication – not only from those on the inside! Schools get Funding Donegal TD Joe McHugh has welcomed funding under the Clar programme for six schools in Donegal to undertake work to improve safety. Local schools to benefit from the programme are St. Catherine’s Vocational School, Killybegs which will receive €45,000 and Scoil Mhuire, Pettigo, which is also to receive €45,000. The funding is to go towards improving safety for pupils coming and going to the schools. It will also help towards installing pedestrian crossings, flashing lights and speed indicators adjacent to the schools.

DUNKINEELY / BRUCKLESS / KILLAGHTEE NEWS THE GIRLS’ FRIENDLY SOCIETY Last Tuesday (26th June) the Girls’ Friendly Society presented a tub of flowers to Dunkineely Community Ltd (DCL). This was one of the tasks the girls had to carry out to earn a ‘Nature Study and Environment Badge’; they had to grow flowers for a variety of community groups, and DCL was one of those lucky groups. The Girls’ Friendly Society (GFS) is affiliated to the Church of Ireland but, most important to mention, it is open to all denominations. Their aim is to promote friendship and fellowship among girls; they engage in ‘Badge’ and ‘Craft’ work, Bible study and games. It is a measure of their success that later this year, Inver Union of GFS will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Georgina Armstrong, Branch Leader of the Inver Union, is depicted with members of GFS presenting a tub of flowers, which was gratefully received by Michael Cunningham on behalf of DCL.

Burritos are tortillas (wraps) with a choice of fillings, folded at the base, the tortilla is lifted and then wrapped around the filling. Burrito Filling 1 onion (chopped finely) 350 grms minced beef 1 pepper (red, green or yellow) chopped finely 1-2 pinch salt 1 – 2 pinch chilli powder (optional) ½ tsp oregano (optional) 1 tsp cumin powder (optional) 1 tablsp water 100grms grated cheese Salad ingredients, chopped Sour cream or mayonnaise Method In a frying pan with a drizzle of oil, fry the onion and beef until onion is soft. Add the rest of the ingredients except for the cheese, salad ingredients and sour cream. Cook gently until the beef is cooked. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. Taste and adjust flavourings which are approximate measures for your family. Place the beef dish along with the cheese, salad, sour cream and warm tortillas on the dinner table and tuck in. If the tortillas are too crispy to fold, simply sandwich the fillings between two tortillas and enjoy. Tortillas (Wraps) Homemade tortillas (wraps) have no additives or preservatives are a million times tastier than commercial ones, a fraction of the price and fun to make. This is baking at its best - no fat, no sugar, no guilt. Make them often. Makes 8 medium tortillas or 12 small. 200grms plain flour 2 tblsp. olive or rapeseed oil Pinch of salt 8 tblsp cold water (approximately) Method Place flour, oil and salt into a medium size bowl. Add 6 tblspn of cold water. Using a metal spoon, stir the ingredients until they start to bind. If the ingredients are still dry, keep adding water a tablespoon at a time until you have a ball of dough. It should not be sticky, but if it is, add a little more flour. Knead or squeeze the dough together until it is smooth and pliable. Cut into 8 or 12 pieces. On a floured surface roll each piece into a very thin circle. You should be able to see your hand through the pastry. Don’t worry what shape the children roll out their tortillas into at first, they will get better with practice and of course they will still taste delicious. Heat up a heavy based saucepan or griddle, no oil required, bake the tortillas for a few minutes on one side and then the other. They will bubble up a little and brown in areas. This is all part of the fun! Fill and wrap, eat immediately. If the filling isn’t ready, keep the tortillas/wraps warm and soft in a clean tea towel. Road Noise Action Plan for Donegal Donegal County Council has drawn up a Noise Action Plan 2018-2023 to address environmental noise from sections of major roads in the county with more than three million vehicles per annum. Environmental noise is unwanted or harmful outdoor sound created by human activities, including noise emitted by means of transport. Sections of the N56, N15, N14 and N13 in County Donegal as well as sections of the R229, R238, R245 and the R250 are on the list of roads which may require measures to control the noise in order to meet the requirements of the EU regulations. Some of the measures under consideration to reduce noise for residents near major roads are building of bypasses,
traffic calming in built-up areas, changes to road surfaces, changes to noise insulation in new social housing. The route affected locally is the N56 from Donegal Town which passes through some residential/industrial areas to the west of the town and goes through the villages of Inver, Dunkineely and Bruckless. In total approximately 109 residential dwellings have been identified as likely to be affected by transport noise throughout the County Council’s action plan area. A public consultation on the Draft 5-year Plan is now underway and will remain open until August 24th. The draft plan may now be obtained on the Donegal County Council website along with noise maps of the affected roads.

Drowing Victim was French National The man who drowned at Killybegs Harbour on Sunday 24th June has been named as Khalid Laajaj, a French National aged in his 50s. After receiving reports of a person in the water, Killybegs Coastguard discovered Mr Laajaj who was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was then removed to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post‑mortem was carried out. His death is believed to have been a tragic accident.

Say hello to summer with a delicious Tapas menu at the Market House Restaurant at the Abbey Hotel which is available from 6pm - 7pm Monday to Friday. After a busy day in the office and temperatures in the high twenties last Wednesday evening, we decided to sample some of the delicious menu on offer at the Abbey. With a continental feeling around we were shown to our table where we ordered a large jug of sangria (available in alcoholic or non-alcoholic versions) and was most refreshing. After pondering over the extensive menu we decided to go for four small plates - Cilantro, lime and chilli chicken wings, Focaccia Bruschetta topped with cherry, tomato, garlic, fresh basil and parmesan shavings, Salt ‘n’ pepper Crumbed Calamari with balsamic and garlic dip and the Chicken Strips in a crispy coconut panko crumb which was served with a light and refreshing mint yoghurt dip. One dish was more delicious than the other. There was also a ‘something sweet’ menu where we indulged in a scrumptious mini cake; what a very enjoyable evening with great food. With the hot summer evenings and many of us not feeling like a large meal it is nice to sit back and enjoy a variety of small nibbles while sipping a glass of sangria, so make a visit to the Market House top of your list this season. Gardening with Emer BEACH GARDENING This month at Ashtree Garden Centre we have an indoor beach set up for children of all ages to come and enjoy playing in the sand in the comfort and safety of an enclosed area. There is a small entry charge per child and buckets and spades are provided. Seating is available beside the beach for you to enjoy a take-away coffee and ice-cream from the Potting Shed Tearoom while you supervise your children. If you have found your garden resembles a beach after this hot, dry spell, you may be tempted to dowse it in water every evening in the attempt to revive some tired, stressed plants. With people being urged to conserve water, you might find it useful to know that there are a number of plants that can withstand drought conditions and that many established trees and shrubs can source their own
water with deep roots. Some common drought tolerant plants include Buxus (Boxwood), Pampas Grass, Cordylines, Sedums and Lavender. Many silver, succulent or hairy leafed plants are better suited to withstand periods of dry weather. If you have an area of well drained soil you can create a quirky beach themed bed with the use of these plants, some pebbles and a feature piece of driftwood! At the launch of the Government’s Five Year Action Plan for the Irish Language 2018-2022 on Friday last in Gweedore, Ministers Charlie Flanagan and Katherine Zappone announced they will be spending a week in Donegal to brush up on their Irish language skills. The ministers will be in Oideas Gael in Glencolmcille in the coming weeks and will partake in a course at the Irish College. Minister Flanagan studied Irish at National School but wants to update his skills while Minister Zappone will be learning Irish for the first time. The Government’s Five Year Plan hopes to halt the decline in Irish speakers and help foster a revival of the language.

Digger unearths gold bracelets
While digging drains on the farm of Norman Witherow near Convoy last week, four gold bracelets or arm bands were discovered hidden under a stone approximately two feet below ground. After a jeweller friend of the farmer advised that the items were significant, Mr Witherow contacted Donegal County Museum who in turn made the find known to the National Museum in Dublin. Maeve Sikora, keeper of Irish antiquities at the National Museum, commended the workers who found the treasures for reporting the find promptly to officials. “It’s very significant,” Ms Skiora said of the find, “they could go back as far as the late Bronze Age in 1,200-500BC”. The gold bands will remain in Dublin for full examination and will then go on show in the National Museum. It is hoped that the artefacts will return to Donegal at some point to be exhibited. Discoveries such as this are legally the property of the state and are not owned by those who find them or on whose land they may be found.

Fáilte Ireland’s KNOW DONEGAL Local Experts Programme to Welcome Visitors Fáilte Ireland last week held workshops on its new KNOW DONEGAL Local Experts Programme initiative for over 111 attendees who are involved in the tourism sector and the local community, who welcome and engage with visitors to Donegal. Explaining the programme, Amanda Boyle, Visitor Engagement, with Fáilte Ireland said that those attending came from a diverse range of tourism businesses who all wanted to provide visitors with the best experience of Donegal, its attractions and people: “Donegal’s historical buildings and towns, its stunning landscapes and world class festivals are brought to life every day by the front line employees and volunteers. Visitors not only seek out local people and their advice, they trust it. Car Free Zone for Rossnowlagh Beach
Rossnowlagh Beach has got a designated area for car parking which will keep vehicles off one section of the beach. Rossnowlagh is one of only two beaches in Donegal where cars are allowed to drive and park but concerns over public safety have surfaced during the recent spell of sunny weather when thousands of people flocked to the coastal resort. Buoys have been laid out on the sand between the two slipways to create the carfree area. The car free zone has been much welcomed by beach goers and community members.

Duffy’s Circus made its annual visit to Donegal Town and one of Seamus’ more flamboyant gestures was to hire the circus for a private showing to the children of Glencoagh school. A special steam train was laid on with countless carriages. We all queued on the platform of our little railway station until we heard the chuff chuff of the engine come merrily along the railway line, not burdened down with Guinness, cement, sugar and all the practicalities of a normal engine labouring. We almost felt the little train was entering into the spirit of the day. Our teachers shepherded us into the carriages and as each new carriage filled the train driver would move the beast along so that more carriages could be filled from the platform. With over one hundred and fifty souls on board the train with maybe twenty carriages snaked its way gently down the Mountcharles Glen with a carefree panache seldom seen when making the return journey, fighting every yard of the way up the same Glen pulling tons of provisions for the villages it passed through on its way to Killybegs. No, today was different - when the four miles to Donegal was completed we left our train and our teachers lined us up to march through Donegal Town, out to the Clar Road where Duffy’s Circus had encamped. Arms swinging, tweed suit, eyes straight ahead Seamus led us, looking neither to the right or to the left. At the circus field Mr John Duffy himself awaited at the entrance, a middle sized very rotund man dressed in a top hat and formal evening wear. He carried a very long whip and welcomed Mr McManus and the young people from Mountcharles to his circus. He spoke with a croaky deep baritone voice and we were all very impressed. A black man walked past me and that was the first time I had seen any person who did not have white skin. The circus acts have all been forgotten, but the train journey, the march to the circus field, Mr

John Duffy and of course the black man are as clear to my memory as if they had happened last year. Another year, possibly 1947 or 1948 Seamus took us on a trip to Bundoran seaside resort. We were chaperoned by teachers and some volunteers from the village. The same steam train picked us up and took us past Donegal and up along the other side of Donegal Bay to the terminus at Ballyshannon; we then transferred to a fleet of Great Northern buses for the final three miles to Bundoran. We each had our sandwiches and bottle of milk with us and our parents gave us what they could afford financially, a sixpence for some or maybe one shilling or more for some luckier child. As we boarded the buses from Ballyshannon, Seamus produced a largish stout leather case full of silver coins. Each child was handed one half crown, equivalent to two shillings and six pence. I made my way to my seat on the bus, sweaty little hands squeezing tightly on my great wealth. I now had three shillings and sixpence and felt as rich as Croesus. I have often thought later on in life about all the trouble this relatively old man incurred on himself at the age of 76 or thereabouts. Organising the train, the buses, and of course making sure the bank had 150 or 160 bright half crowns made ready for the great man. Our age of innocence was manifest on this particular day. Bundoran was packed with day trippers and as we made our way down to the amusements my sister Philomena found a bright russet coloured ten shilling note on the ground. She handed it to me and I manfully marched up to the first man I met on the thronged street. Holding up the ten shilling note I asked him, “Did you lose a ten shilling note? “Oh indeed I did”, he said, “and you are a very good boy to find it for me”. He melted into the throngs of people ten shillings the richer. Even as a childish innocent I felt he claimed it almost too quickly, and not even a penny reward for my good deed. Maybe it was a first little lesson that perfidy might even walk the streets of Bundoran on this the sunniest and happiest day of my life. However it did not mar my wonderful day in beautiful, bracing Bundoran, a day I have forever treasured in my life’s anthology of happy days which are so worthwhile revisiting in our minds. Seamus was probably best known for his stories. On a good summer evening
word would pass around the village that at 7pm he would be at the big green pump at the top of the village. All other pursuits were put on hold, flying kites, paddling in the little river, playing cowboys in the plantation, hop scotch, yes all of these games important and all as they were, were set aside and we thronged towards the pump. The bush telegraph had done its job well. When we were all in place he would stride down from the bungalow, throw a glance over his serried troops and make a mental note of an absentee if there were one. Then with his arms outheld and his shoulders hunched he would dolefully launch into one of his many fables, usually starting off in a sad mode where trouble was brewing in ‘Na Fianna’, our great ancestral warriors. Invasion was imminent but over the course of the next hour little glimmers of hope would appear and eventually the denouement was always full of hope and happiness. Some prince would marry a beautiful princess and their castle would have 365 rooms, one for every day of the year. The wedding would last for 100 days and the last day was better than the first. This type of wedding ended every story and then Seamus would stand up, pick up his cushion, wave us all good night and stride off up the hill to his bungalow. He loved all of the children and all things Irish, he knew all our names and would sit with arms folded and eyes closed as those of us who had a reasonably good voice would sing songs like, “Fainne Geal an Lae” for him, or his dear Ethna Carbery’s “Roddie McCorley”. “Dragons live forever but not so little boys” and after a few more years I was shipped off to boarding school. But Seamus seemed eternal, our age group were replaced by just as enthusiastic open eyed younger children for whom he created that magic wonderland again and again until he left us all for the last time. He died in New York in 1960 having just returned from his beloved village. He was 90 years of age and his legacy is always with us. God Bless You Seamus. You were a true ‘Knights of Knockagar’ - the title of his last book.

To coincide with the announcement of new flights from Canada to Shannon, Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, showcased the Wild Atlantic Way to a number of representatives from Air Canada along with a group of Canadian tour operators. The tour operators, specialising in the corporate and leisure areas, included both those who currently sell Ireland in Canada, as well as new operators interested in programming Ireland. Fáilte Ireland’s bespoke itinerary which encompassed Donegal, Sligo, Galway and Clare, was designed to give the group a taste of what an Irish holiday on the Wild Atlantic Way has to offer. The group were particularly interested in Ireland’s golf offering and had the opportunity to play golf at Enniscrone Golf Links, Sligo and the Trump International Golf Links, Clare, as well as visiting the Cliffs of Moher before departing via Shannon Airport. Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Commercial Development, Paul Mockler, commented: “The Canadian market is very important for Ireland - in 2017, over 200,000 Canadian tourists visited Ireland, spending an estimated €180 million. Following the grant of planning permission in January, work is now well underway to extend the Abbott Ireland plant at Lurganboy. The development consists of four elements: a 1,287 sq m warehouse extension at the rear north‑east corner; a new two‑storey office extension of 763 sq m at the front north‑west corner of the plant; a new single storey extension of 168 sq m housing extended sanitary facilities at the front south west corner; and a new internal first floor extension of 1,083 sq m to provide new first floor plant area and additional office accommodation.

Donegal basked in Mediterranean conditions last week with temperatures reaching 30 degrees on Thursday. This year weather forecast after weather forecast issued yellow, orange and red alerts for wind, rain and snow and lo and behold a yellow warning issued last week for a heat wave. Supply could not meet demand for fans with one shop, McGroarty Electrical on the Mountcharles Road, selling 25 desk fans in two hours. Neil McGroarty told The Eye, “There was not another one left in the country and customers were so desperate to cool down price didn’t matter. I sold four top of the range Dyson fans at a cost of €249 in an hour, desperation had set in”. As most adults and children enjoyed the sunshine with crowds flocking to local beaches, the searing temperatures caused problems for others. Donegal County Council workers were drafted out to sand the roads as the tar began to boil, an unusual sight on the highways and byways of rural Donegal. The hot weather proved serious business for farmers: there was delight at saving the hay and silage without rain but the down side was water shortage for crops and livestock. An interesting statistic revealed that one cow drinks 100 litres of water a day but in the heat last week needed 150 litres. Irish Water issued a drought warning and in some counties a hosepipe ban. Temperatures are still high but more bearable this week and while the holiday season is in full swing and popular holiday resorts abroad experience rain, Ireland is topping the holiday destination list. Walk While You Can…
Fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease to go through Donegal Town on 11th and 12th July In Ireland there are over 400 people living with Motor Neurone Disease; however the MND Association can only provide three nurses for the whole country with their salaries being paid for by church gate collections. Fr Tony Coote was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease early in 2018. Like others he was terrified at the news but has committed himself to living each day, looking to the future and choosing to live rather than exist. “I used to play squash twice a week and was always on the go thinking of the next plan and idea. This illness has slowed me up and for the first time since I was a child I fall over easily and have to watch the ground as I walk,” he said. Fr Tony has organised the “Walk While You Can” which will see him walking with a team of five others from Letterkenny to Ballydehob in County Cork. Starting on the 10th July in Letterkenny, the group will arrive in Donegal Town on the 11th of July setting off again the next day at 10am. We invite you to become part of Walk While You Can, to donate, walk with us, organise a fundraising event or offer accommodation to around 6 of us doing the whole walk. All funds will be donated for research for new medication RMN and to the IMNDA for the care of those living with the illness.
Colm Gallagher - A Political Eagle
Requiem Mass for the late Colm Gallagher took place in the Church of the Sacred Heart Mountcharles at 11am on Wednesday 4th July followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Mr Gallagher, who was a former County Councillor, passed away suddenly at his home in Glencoagh last Sunday. A widely respected member of Donegal County Council, he was first coopted onto the Council in 1966 and was continuously re-elected until his retirement in 1999. He was an active member of Fine Gael in South West Donegal for over 60 years and was a key supporter of Fine Gael TDs Pa O’Donnell, Paddy Harte, Jim White and Dinny McGinley. Mr Gallagher was Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council from 19821983 and served on a number of committees including the Environment Committee, Housing Committee, Roads Committee, Library Committee, Arts Committee, Museum Steering Committee and County Donegal Old Age Pension Committee. During his term as councillor he also represented Donegal County Council on the Donegal Local Committee of the North Western Health Board, North West Regional Tourism, County Donegal VEC and as a delegate to the Local Authority
Members’ Association (LAMA). Locally, many consider Colm Gallagher’s greatest achievement was the role he played together with J.J. Harvey in the development of the Abbey Vocational School when he was a member of Donegal VEC. Well done to the Máire O Donnell team from Murvagh who narrowly defeated the Portnoo ladies on Sunday 24th June. On a beautiful sunny day, surrounded by stunning views from Portnoo Links, the matches went down to the wire with a nail biting conclusion. The Murvagh ladies now progress to the next round of the competition against Greencastle with the away leg to be played shortly. Coincidentally, the Revive team from Murvagh also came up against the Portnoo ladies in the second round of the competition on Sunday 1st July. Three matches were played at home with two matches being played in Portnoo. Once again, each match was keenly contested but it was the Murvagh ladies who succeeded, winning three matches and now progress to the next round of the competition. Congratulations to all team/panel members and to the team captains. Good luck in the upcoming rounds. There will be a Ladies Club Night in the Club House on Tuesday 10th July at 8pm. Grace Gerry (counsellor) will be in attendance as guest speaker to give tips on how to be confident and relaxed in any social situation and simply to be comfortable in one’s own skin. Mr Denis Kelly will be present to award minor prizes from his Captain’s Day. The draw for partners to play on Lady Captain’s Day will also be held on the night.
