10th Anniversary Donegal Town Summer Festival Preparations are almost complete for this weekend’s 10th Anniversary Donegal Town Summer Festival. Running from Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018 it will feature some of Ireland’s most talented bands. Since first taking place in 2008 the concept of live, open air concerts in the centre of town has attracted people from both the local area and also from all over the country. Opening with the McNelis Cunningham Boyle School of Irish Dance, Friday night continues with the final of the “Jim White Lady Nuala” Competition and later live on

the Diamond Marty Mone “Hit the Diff ”. The Lady Nuala Competition was revived in 2016 and dedicated to the memory of Jim White, who was always a huge supporter of the Summer Festival On Saturday the Kids’ Fun Day starts at 1pm at the AVS and the live music starts on the Diamond at 2pm. Minbenders will be live on stage from 7pm and Hermitage Green will take over from 9pm. On Sunday Donegal’s first ever 10K Run will take place in association with Tír Chonaill Athletic Club at 10.30am. From

12-2pm there will be Kids’ and Adults’ Tractor Races on the Diamond while over at Rossylongan at 4pm a Clay Pigeon Shooting Competition will take place. Concerts on Sunday will be Bagatelle at 6.30pm and closing the weekend from 9pm The Logues. The Festival Weekend promises to be full of family fun with lots of live music, plenty of ceol agus craic in all the surrounding bars and lots of lovely food offerings and shopping to suit all ages and tastes.

Tea by the Sea

The scenic walk around Mountcharles shore which is enjoyed by many has a new added attraction, the Salthill Cabin which opened its doors last Friday. At the helm in the Cabin is Aisling Chatman who is no stranger to the catering business having worked in the Cope House, Killybegs, and most recently in Baskins Cafe, Dunkineely. Married to Andrew Chatman whose mother was Cathy McInaw of the shore, Aisling has revamped the small garden at the side of the McInaw home. The ‘old cottage’ style wooden cabin was built by local men Francis and Pauric Gillespie and is tastefully decorated with hanging baskets and surrounded by Mountcharles stone.

Aisling told The Eye, “Uncle George encouraged us to open the cabin and we are so happy he did. Andrew is a chef and I have worked in the catering business for a long time. Since we opened our doors on Friday it has been so busy with a queue out the gate on Sunday. The weather is a huge factor and people like to sit outside, enjoy a beverage or an ice cream and take in the ambieance of the shore surrounded by the mountains.” An added attraction at Salthill Cabin are the two pygmy goats which are grazing in the field beside the premises where children can take them for a walk or feed them. The Cabin is open seven days a week from 10am to 9pm and has a variety of coffee, a selection of herbal teas, hot chocolate, soft drinks, snacks, ice cream and much more.

Donegal sits at the bottom of income table After Donegal people pay all their bills they have the least amount of cash to play with in Ireland, according to a report compiled by the Western Development Commission. The report, which uses figures from 2016, show that Donegal continues to have a significantly lower disposable income than any other county at €16,099, followed by Roscommon on €17,016 and Mayo on €17,852. This is 2.5% higher than 2015 when Donegal people had €15,705 on average to spend.

Parking Tickets Over 10,000 issued in three years

Donegal County Council has issued over 10,000 Fixed Charged Notices (FCNs) between 2015 and 2017. The Council has raised almost €3million from issuing these FCNs for parking offences. Former Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Sinn Fein’s Gerry McMonagle, said “the revenue generated proves very beneficial to the local economy, the money that is made from the issuing of these notices is reinvested into the local economy.” He continued “the money goes towards the upkeep of car parks, the fixing of roads and some of the money is used to pay for staff.”

He went on to say that exports had risen by 20% in the first five months of 1964. During the last forty-five years Eamonn has seen a lot of changes in Magee’s and also met a lot of high profile customers such as former President Mary McAleese, her husband Martin, John Hume and many more. CHOCOLATE TART

Ingredients: 1 egg, 3/4oz cocoa, 2oz cornflour, 3 /4 pt milk, 2oz sugar, Pastry. Method: Bring milk to the boil, stir in cornflour and cocoa mixed to a cream in cold milk; add the sugar and stir until thick. Cool slightly and stir in the yolk of egg well beaten. Line a sandwich tin with a plain shortcrust and bake until just cooked. Pour into it the filling and bake in a moderate oven for 5 minutes. Beat the white of egg with a pinch of white sugar to a stiff froth, spread this on top of chocolate filling and place in a very cool oven until the meringue is set and lightly browned.

Born in the 50s but a fan of the 70s As the song by the 80s band The Police goes… “I was born in the 50s”, well the late 50s anyway and reached my teenage years in the early 70s. This was a time long before the word technology was invented. Every week we waited for the No.1 in the charts to be announced on Tuesday lunchtimes, whooping with delight when our favourites, Slade, entered the charts in the top spot. Things were distinctly ‘low tech’ then. Recording the Top Twenty charts run-down on Sunday evenings on a cassette recorder with a tiny plugin microphone propped up in front of the radio in the front room was our only means of having up-to-date music. My dad always seemed to barge in and speak in a loud voice while this delicate operation was in progress. Myself and my sisters would try and signal that we were recording, but it made no difference - he carried on talking. When we replayed our precious recording back there was always mumbling in the background “What’s going on in here?” and the reply “Sssh - we’re taping the charts” - “Huh, bloody rubbish - it’s a waste of time” - “Sssssh”. I fondly remember owning a very old and well-used copy of Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 on cassette. It had a silver star design on the cover. This most treasured item had been played so many times that the tape had stretched and creased. The music on it wobbled and the singers would warble parts of the songs. “I’m gonna maaake yooou love meee, Oh yeees I will, you knooww I wiiiil” sang Diana Ross and the Supremes helped along by the Temptations followed by Stevie Wonder’s “Myy Cherriiiee Amooour. When I hear those great tunes today I still expect to hear those distortions to the sound. The early 1970s may have been a time of great creativity in the music world, but it was wasted on a thirteen year old. I left

the Osmonds, David Cassidy and the Bay City Rollers to the ‘teenyboppers’. I thought myself too sophisticated for them. I was into REAL music - Slade, Roxy Music, David Bowie, and later Northern Soul. As it turned out Bowie was a real genius but I still have a soft spot for Slade - to me ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ is the greatest ever festive song.

Every Thursday at 7pm came the proclamation - ‘It’s Number One - It’s Top of the Pops’. A great institution, and the only chance we got to see our heroes on TV, other than rare guest appearances on Saturday night shows like the Val Doonican Show on BBC1. Clad in super-high platform shoes with outlandish costumes topped off with terrible haircuts, we lapped up every second of it, despite my dad (and possibly every other dad in the universe) saying “Is that a bloke?”, “Is he wearing make-up”, “What IS he wearing?” and “They could do with a good haircut”. There were very few magazines that featured pop stars - Jackie was the only one I remember or was allowed to have. Along with stories, fashion and a problem page, it featured centre page pull-out posters -

treasure to me when Noddy Holder or David Bowie were featured. In 1975 I went off to Art College - and a whole new world of music. Considering myself quite mature and discerning, I never really understood Prog Rock and the bands touring at the time were not to my taste (The Who, Yes, Genesis etc - all the classic bands). I had left behind Glam Rock but was still into Northern Soul, dancing through the wee hours into the morning at AllNighters now I was free of parental rules. Around this time a friend bought a new album called ‘Exodus’ by Bob Marley my first introduction to Reggae, a real classic. But big changes were just around the corner… In 1977 the Punk explosion happened! We may have sung ‘Anarchy in the UK’ with gusto, but it never happened, and I don’t think we really knew (or cared) what it meant, but the whole movement brought a breath of fresh air and youthfulness with it. Things were never the same again. I’m not saying it was all good, but it brought with it a generation gap that was needed - who wants to enjoy the same music as their parents? Youth movements need their own tribal identities of which music is a very important part. As the 70s came to a close, the 80s was welcomed in with the ‘Futurists’, oh dear! the clothes and image were much more important than the tunes. A few still stand up today but most we never want to hear again. I remain to this day a big fan of 70s music. It was great, terrible, cheesy, classic, sing-along and sloppy all at the same time. It was an era that covered so many genres and featured so many brilliant artists, it really is hard to beat. If looking back is part of getting old - I think the soundtrack to my teenage years will keep me musically in that decade. I may be in my 60s - but my heart is in the 70s.

Home cooking with Sian FRESH SUMMER FRUIT, ROSE WATER TARTLETS Pastry recipe again? Why? Simply because it’s Summer and because I have had the pleasure of sharing this eye pleasing, melt in the mouth recipe for three Afternoon Tea Party Cookery Classes this week. A mum and adult daughter class, a 50th Birthday Party Class and a small Hen Party Class. Whilst I would encourage making both the sweet shortcrust pastry and the Diplomat Cream, the pastry can be bought frozen or chilled if you are pushed for time. But please, please take the time to make the Diplomat Cream, you won’t be disappointed. Makes approximately 24 tartlets or 1 large tart base Ingredients Sweet Shortcrust Pastry 125g butter (cold and cubed); 200g Plain flour (sieved); 25 g Caster Sugar; 1 Egg Yolk (beaten); 1-2 tblsp cold water. Diplomat Cream 2 medium eggs yolks; 1 generous tblsp caster sugar 1rounded tblsp cornflour; 200 grms milk; 1 tsp rose water or ½ tsp vanilla extract; 150mls cream (firmly whipped.) Topping Variety of summer fruits (washed), small mint leaves Instructions Pastry - Rub butter into flour until like the consistency of breadcrumbs. Mix in sugar. Make a well and add the egg. Use a table knife to mix in the egg. Dribble in 1 tblsp of water to bind pastry together. If the mixture seems dry, dribble in a tiny bit more water. Bring to a ball. Leave to rest in the fridge for at least 15 minutes. The pastry will be much easier to roll after resting. Diplomat Cream – whisk the egg yolks, sugar and cornflour together until thick and paler in colour. Heat the milk and flavouring. Cool for a second or two. Pour the hot milk into the egg mix, stirring continuously. I find a cloth under the bowl of egg mix helps hold the bowl in place. Wash the saucepan and return the egg and milk mix into the saucepan, over a medium to low heat and stir, until the mixture thickens. Continue for 1-2 minutes to cook the cornflour, beating to make the mix glossy. Place in a cold bowl and cover the surface directly with cling film. This stage can be made the night before. If you’re in a hurry to cool, place in a bowl of ice. When cold, mix thoroughly with the firm whipped cream. Taste and add more flavouring if required. Remove the pastry from the fridge and roll out on a lightly floured surface, cut into circles using pastry cutters. Line the greased patty tins with the pastry circles. Bake in a pre-heated oven 180⁰C until golden brown, approximately 10 – 12 minutes. When cooked, place tartlets on a wire rack to cool completely. To assemble tartlets -Spoon or pipe the diplomat cream into the pastry cases. Top with fruit and a mint leaf. Serve almost immediately. Enjoy. Mountcharles Old Fair Day Mountcharles Heritage and Walking Group was delighted to welcome the Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland to the village this weekend. This is the second time they have based their festival with us. A very successful programme saw them extend the dry stone wall at the Big Pier. Please take a spin out and take a look. The weekend culminated with the Fair Day which was held in beautiful sunshine on the Main Street on Sunday afternoon. Children enjoyed story telling, old style games, stone and face painting and a fun farm. Leghowney Country Market was a popular stall with the garden club and blacksmith also drawing crowds. …continued from Issue 17 I shall now fast forward to 1946 - the year after World War II ended when I first laid eyes on this mythical hero the knowledge of whose great wealth, generosity, love of children and all things Irish had preceded him. I was not to be disappointed - he arrived one day in early June and went straight to the very imposing bungalow which his family had built and in which Brian McGroary and his wife Josie lived. Brian, a nephew of Seamus, lived permanently here and looked after the 76 year old man on his visits. After a day’s rest Seamus made his appearance on a sunny day at the front of the house. We all peered through the gate and watched this tall distinguished man with battleship grey hair and moustache do exercises, stretching down to tip his toes, arms akimbo, and then a couple of little feints. If he saw us there he gave no sign of recognition as he went indoors again. Later on in the afternoon word filtered down the village that Seamus would be meeting with all of the school children on the following day and each child was to have his certificate with him or her. Let me explain, Seamus expected each pupil in our school, the same school he had taught in, to have learned a certain number of poems by Ethna Carbery or by himself. Our teachers in the school would examine us on the said poems and certificates were issued to the effect that Johnny so and so or Mary O’Donnell had recited or sung four, six or maybe even eight poems. This delighted Seamus and his generosity would be there to be seen when a lorry carrying two or three large trunks would arrive from Cobh in County Cork where Seamus had

disembarked from his transatlantic trip. He had been picked up by a hired hackney car and the trunks would follow a day or two later. When the trunks were opened and all of the gifts were put on display along the front of the bungalow I can only say that Howard Carter’s excitement and ecstasy when he finally beheld the wonders of Tutankhamun’s sarcophagus and tomb could not have been any greater than the joy and disbelief on the faces of the one hundred and fifty children who were agog at all of the wonders and pleasures of the world which had been laid out for them all around the bungalow which overlooked our tiny village. We now had our very own ‘Valley of the Kings’. We clambered about, eyes popping from their sockets at this priceless trove of Americana - cowboy outfits, jeans, footballs the like of which we had never seen (these were American Footballs the shape of rugby balls which in our outpost we did not have a working knowledge of either). There were roller skates, Dick Tracy wrist radios, two way radios - the list went on. The girls excited themselves about their own troves, feminine to observe and of no interest to the boys. Each child over the two days would queue patiently, be introduced to Seamus, present his or her certificate and on the odd occasion be asked to recite one of the poems on their personal syllabus. I do remember being asked did I know his own poem ‘Inver Bay’ - a beautiful little poem written in the early 1900’s. He was happy

that I knew the poem exactly as he had written it and to this day when I think of the lovely cove where the Eany River flows from its source - a cascade of water way up in the Bluestacks and wonderfully named “The Grey Mare’s Tail” - this beautiful little poem springs from some strange hidden part of the recesses of my brain. Och Inver bay of a harvest day And the sun going down the sky With many’s the laugh, the boats set aft And many’s the merry cry To Cork’s own Cobh Tho’ one might rove And never find machree A rarer bay a fairer bay A sweeter bay nor thee For the Kaiser’s rod and his realm so broad I wouldn’t swop not I My Inver Bay of a harvest day And the sun going down the sky.

But I indulge myself and wander off a little from the great happy memories we inherited from our very own Odysseus who had come to rest for a little time in the quiet haven of his own beloved Donegal. He brought mirth and happiness to all the young of his birthplace and our summer holidays were a time spent awaiting the call of our own ‘pied piper’ and the carefree delights of our school holidays. He led us up into the Bluestack mountains maybe three or four miles to a Mass Rock - a relic of the penal days of the eighteenth century when the saying of mass was forbidden on pain of death. Ramrod straight, this seventy six year old man led us up the gentle slopes and told us with not a little hint of venom how our ancestors had been treated by the euphemistically termed “The Strangers”. There was a very large turnout for the South Donegal Vintage and Heritage Club’s annual presentation of funds raised throughout the year from the many events which they organised. The Limit Bar and Restaurant in Ballyshannon provided an excellent venue along with refreshments and finger food. All of the organisations who received cheques on the night returned their grateful thanks to the club for all their time and effort put in to raising so much needed funds. Loraine McGarrigle from the organising committee said it was great to see so much support for their different days and thanked everyone who has helped out in any way over the year. Loraine said, “It is all possible to have these days when there are so many people willing to give their time and help to make these outings so successful.”

EYE on SPORT Donegal Town F.C. Notes A.G.M. – Donegal Town F.C. held its A.G.M. in the Abbey Hotel on Monday 18th June. The outgoing Executive outlined the healthy position the club is in at present, both on and off the pitch. Chairman Pauric O’Neill thanked the outgoing committee for their hard work all year and congratulated players and managers at all levels for their performances this year. The committee has remained largely unchanged for the upcoming season with the majority of the positions to remain the same with Rory Dunlevy replacing Paddy Martin as Vice Chairman. Outgoing Chairman Pauric O’Neill stated that Paddy Martin was stepping down from Club commitments and thanked him for his

many years service to the club in a variety of positions. Four Masters U12 Camogs

The Four Masters U12 Camogs welcomed Na Magha from Derry to Tirchonaill Park last Monday evening. The teams were very well matched and our girls put in some super performances and finished with a well deserved win. Well done girls. U12 Camogs had a great evening last Friday in St Eunans and were given the honour of playing on the county pitch. They faced a very strong St Eunans team but held their own throughout the match and were very unlucky to come out on the losing side. Well done girls. Their final matches are this Saturday. They will play two matches v Muff and Carndonagh away.

There was no winner of the lotto jackpot €6,500 in week 50 of the season draw held in the Abbey Hotel on Monday 25th June. Naomh Brid Notes Congratulations to the U12 team on winning the regional final against Kilcar. They now move forward to take part in the County blitz in Carndonagh. The annual Naomh Brid GAA Golf classic was held in Donegal Golf Club Murvagh on Friday last. With over 40 teams competing it turned out to be the most competitively contested yet. Teams from Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Tyrone, and Derry, and our winners came all the way from Galway to win this year’s event. Naomh Brid would like to thank our main sponsor Declan Gallagher Financial Services Ltd and all the other sponsors who gave generously to support our event. A special mention to David Robinson PGA Professional, Bundoran Golf Club, who was very generous and supplied the prizes. The second half saw Fanad extend their lead to 4 points before a Naomh Brid comeback started with points from Dermot Langan, and Keelan Heeney winning a penalty with Dermot Langan hitting it hard and low to the back of the net to leave a point between them. Naomh Brid responded well with a Dermot Langan free and Tommy Gallagher’s efforts. Fanad responded with the centre half back getting the goal to leave the full-time score Fanad Reserve 1-13 to Naomh Brid reserve 1-9. There were good performances from Conor McGloin, Ryan O’Leary and Keelan Heeney.
