Tír Chonaill Stone Festival returns to Mountcharles Now in its 5th year, the Tír Chonaill Stone Festival returns to Mountcharles Pier after three successful years in Glencolmcille during which the famous 1916 commemoration monument ‘Clocha na hÉireann’’ was created. This monument continues to draw attention from all over the world for its uniqueness and craftsmanship. Running from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June, the Festival will include Stone Carving and Walling Workshops in addition to restoring a stretch of the Mountcharles Shore Wall which was originally built as part of a poverty relief scheme during the Famine. Over the past three years the Mountcharles Walking and Heritage Group have made a superb effort in keeping up the repairs to the wall and as 2018 is the 170th anniversary of the Great Hunger, this restoration project will be a fitting commemoration. Stone carving and letter cutting workshops will also take place, led by talented instructors Seamus Dunbar and Brendan McGloin. While learning this skill participants could carve, for example, the

name of a house or the number of the door, to take home. Included in the programme of events is a visit Patsy McInaw’s farm at Turas Hill where over three miles of dry stone wall has been single handedly built as part of restoring field patterns. Patsy will give a rare demonstration of the almost forgotten art of cutting flagstone field drains, the method by which all land was drained before pipes. Running alongside the Stone Festival on Sunday is the Mountcharles Fair Day with lots to enjoy including traditional crafts, sheep shearing, children’s activities, drama and a busking competition. In addition the wonderful St. Peter’s Marching Band, who are celebrating 60 years, will close the Festival and Fair Day with a performance on the Main Street. Let’s Get Creative

As summer holidays approach, now is a great time to start thinking of ways to entertain the kids! While getting as much activity and exercise is obviously a must, it is also vitally important for your child to have outlets for creativity and down time. What better way than sticking, painting, gluing and coloring! But how can you help your child develop their creativity at home? 1. Turn off the TV, iPad, DVDs and whatever other screens are in their reach – how about turning a time that is usually TV time into creative time. For example, how about the TV doesn’t turn on in your house until after dinner, or perhaps it turns off for an hour before bed? While it may cause upset for the first day or two, your children will very quickly learn that this is routine and will turn to other means of entertaining themselves. 2. Provide them with a designated creative space – Give your kids an art area. Maybe you have space under the stairs or in their play room, or even at the end of the bed where you could put a table that is always ready for them to be creative. Make it easy to access so as creative time doesn’t

Keep your creative space well stocked and interesting – Make sure there is always a supply of coloured card, markers and pencils, stickers, googly eyes, stencils, pipe cleaners etc in boxes under the table. Any bargain store will have supplies at a great price. Every now and then introduce something new – felt, colouring books, glitter (if you’re feeling patient!!) and keep the area novel. 4. Don’t expect perfection – Your child’s creation is perfect just the way it is! Village Tavern to Reopen Margaret Gallagher

Phonsie O’Donnell has purchased the Village Tavern, Mountcharles and is in the process of a total renovation. This award winning bar and restaurant was previously owned by Enda O’Rourke. The new proprietor is no stranger to the hospitality business as he also owns the premises in Donegal Town which is presently leased out as “The House Gastro Pub”. Originally from Glenties, Phonsie told The Eye on Donegal, “I am excited about owning a premises in Mountcharles and we are presently working there to have a fresh quirky bar ready to open at the beginning of August. We will open the small bar seven days a week and the lounge bar at weekends with music on a Saturday night. The restaurant will be launched next spring as we have to relocate the kitchen within the building while also carrying out a total revamp. There are seven bedrooms upstairs which I also intend to renovate and provide first class accommodation early next year.” This is great news for the revellers in Mountcharles and the environs and we wish Phonsie every success with his new premises.

Safer Cycling Campaign

The Donegal Road Safety Working Group (DRSWG) have launched a campaign to encourage cyclists to wear high viz tops. Following research and discussions with local cycling clubs the DRSWG have had cycling gilets manufactured in high viz material with the logo ‘1.5m Please Share the Road’ printed on the back of the gilet which will be clearly visible to motorists overtaking cyclists. These gilets will be distributed to cycling clubs as part of the campaign with the central message being ‘Let’s Make Cycling Safer’. 15 cyclists lost their lives on Irish roads in 2017 and 6 have died to date in 2018.

QUICHE SERVES 6 Eggs are very versatile and inexpensive. Baking is therapeutic. Which makes eating quiche a pleasure; warm or cold; for breakfast, lunch, tea, supper or picnic times. Wholemeal Short Crust Pastry This pastry is wholesome, rustic and should cut like a good biscuit. 100 g wholemeal flour 100 g plain flour (sieved) 100 g butter - cold (or butter and lard) Cold water to bind. Quiche Filling 1 onion (finely diced) 4 – 6 slices of bacon or ham (finely diced) 4 eggs (beaten) 100ml cream or milk 150g grated cheddar cheese 2 tomatoes (sliced) Method To make the pastry: Place the flours into a large bowl. Cut the butter into small squares and place into the flour. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour, until resembling fine breadcrumbs. The colder your hands the better for this stage. Add 4 tbspn of cold water. Using a dining knife, mix the water into the flour and butter mix. Repeat with one spoon of water at a time, until you can make a firm dough with your hand. This stage can be made in the food processor using butter taken out of the fridge seconds before processing. NB: If the pastry is soft too much water or butter was used. If the pastry is hard usually not enough butter or water has been used. Leave to cool in the fridge for at least 10 minutes. Pre heat oven Temp 190⁰C 375°F Gas 5 Roll out the pastry to fit a 20 - 23cm flan ring. Trim the edges. Line the base and sides of the pastry with a circle of greaseproof paper. Fill with spoons or dried peas. Place in the oven to bake for 10 - 15 minutes. (Called ‘Baking Blind’). Remove the peas or spoons and greaseproof paper, seal the pastry with some beaten egg and pop in the oven for another 5 minutes. Turn down the oven to 170⁰C 325°F Gas 3 To make the filling: Fry the bacon and onion in a little butter and oil in a frying pan. Place the beaten eggs and cream into a jug, add the onions, bacon and cheese. Stir until combined. Pour into the cooked pastry case. Place slices of tomatoes on top of the filling, press down a little into the filling. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the filling is set. Serve hot or cold with dip-in dip-out salad (previous recipe) and a dressing of your choice. NB: Milk can be used instead of cream, allow extra time for setting. For a change try smoked salmon and asparagus filling, or mixed peppers and goat’s cheese. AN EYE ON THE NEWS IN JUNE 1979 INFLATION Inflation was running at 7.4% for the first six months of the year and the cost of living was predicted to double in the full year. BANK HOME LOANS 15.75% rate set for mortgages and 20% for overdrafts after 2.5% increase. OIL OPEC increased the price of a barrel of oil to $18 - a 50% increase on the price just six months earlier. Micheál Naughton appointed Cathaoirleach of the Donegal Municipal District Cllr. Naughton was co-opted to the council following the death of Cllr Sean McEniff last year. He was proposed for MD Cathaoirleach by Cllr John Campbell (Ind) and seconded by Cllr Noel Jordan (SF). Cllr. Naughton thanked his fellow members of Donegal Municipal District and praised outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Tom Conaghan (Ind). He went on to say that it was a great honour to be elected as Cathaoirleach after such a short period in the council. He added, “When we work together for the betterment of this Municipal District we get better results. This Municipal District is doing well at the moment. We are getting our share of entitlements for the area. I look forward to working with each and every one of you.” Cllr Naughton stated that he hopes to do everything in his power to provide for the Donegal MD in the next year as well as adding that he is delighted to have been given the opportunity to take over the role. “My goal is to deliver the best for the area, to see more infrastructure and employment in this MD. In my forthcoming year I would also like to see the completion of the Mountcharles bypass and the bridge in Donegal Town; the fire station issue in Bundoran & Ballyshannon resolved, and further developments at the pier in Killybegs which is one of our main assets in the South of the County; I would love to see works started on the Fintra Bridge, also I would like to see the footpaths from Donegal Town to Killymard, Ballyshannon bypass and Dunkineely to Killaghtee

Micheál has been actively involved in local politics in Donegal over the past number of years. He has held a number of positions including Constituency Delegate for Donegal to the Ard Chomhairle; he served as Committee Member for Agriculture & Northern Ireland on the Ard Chomhairle; he was also Chairman of the Ballintra/ Laghey Cumann for over 15 years and was vice chair of the Donegal Chomhairle Dail Ceantair. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Chomhairle Dáil Ceantair. Micheál always had a passion for politics and has nearly 20 years’ involvement with the Fianna Faìl party in the County. Micheál got involved in politics to help the ordinary people in the community and to get involved in building relationships. He enjoys being able to meet people locally and being able to assist them in the issues that are important to them. Cllr. Naughton is also hugely involved in the GAA both locally and at national level, Micheál is the current President of Ulster Ladies GAA and National Vice President.

He first got involved with the Four Masters Club in Donegal Town at underage and led the Four Masters club to their first senior title in 2006 and back to back in 2007. In 2009 Michael got involved with the Donegal County Ladies Senior Team and led them to their first Division 2 title, Ulster Intermediate title and an All-Ireland intermediate title in 2010. He was awarded Bord Gais Manager of the year in 2010 and subsequently managed the All Star Ladies team on its tour to Toronto. More recently in 2016 Micheál led the Ladies to a National league final, promotion to Division 1 and their Ulster senior final win. Micheál is the General Manager of the 4 Star Clanree Hotel and McGettigan’s Hotel in Letterkenny. He is married to Annette, they live in Laghey and are expecting their first child in July.

The summer solstice is the moment in time when the Earth’s tilt towards the Sun is at its maximum and the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky providing us with the most daylight of the year. When it ends, the nights will began to close in as the earth rotates away from the sun. In the Northern Hemisphere where we live the day of the summer solstice is the longest day of the year (the day with the most daylight and the shortest night) and occurs every year between June 20 and June 22. The summer solstice marks the end of spring and

the beginning of summer.

The two elements that drive this all-important seasonal clock are the Earth’s tilted axis and the planet’s orbit around the sun. The day has been celebrated by pagans and druids, with rituals of rebirth performed throughout history on the day. Midsummer festivities are still held across the world in many different cultures. In many cases, the rituals are linked with themes of religion or fertility.

From Stateside to Lakeside A couple of months ago, I got an email from Mark, in Oklahoma, USA. He was coming to Ireland with his girlfriend Maddie, and he was planning a surprise wedding proposal. He chose his location, the stunning Harvey’s Point, the ring, the time and then he needed someone to secretly capture it... this is where I came in. Mark and I secretly met in the foyer for a quick brief, then he went off to collect Maddie for a lakeside walk before their dinner reservation. I had an idea to bring my son along with me as a decoy, and I pretended to be photographing him when I was really shooting the proposal (thank God for my 70-200 lens). Photographer Barbara McGroary.

As The Cannonball Run celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, Ken Foley of the Supermac’s Plaza has convinced the organizers to visit Donegal Town. The unique three‑day event travels from Dublin to Westport but this year will take a detour to Donegal Town. Over one hundred Exotic and Supercars will come to town and bring up to 15,000 followers. Ken told The Eye on Donegal that this event is a great boost for the town at the end of the season and the orgainisers are presently in negotiations to have the cavalcade of cars pass through the town. Donegal County Council plan to reduce the speed limit on the N13 road from near Burt to the Bridgend roundabout from 100km per hour to 60km per hour. The Council are planning on bringing in the lower speed limit from 9th July. The new speed limit is being implemented for safety reasons as road strengthening works are planned for the area.

Third-generation steeplejack company working on Church repairs Cross Community Support for Church Restoration

by Margaret Gallagher One of the most talked about projects in the town is the ongoing work on the tower and spire of Donegal Parish Church of Ireland. Work commenced on the church in March and is expected to be completed by mid‑July. There are currently five men on site, steeplejacks and stonemasons. Last Friday The Eye on Donegal caught up with Brian Rainey, Managing Director of Rainey Restoration. “I am almost 20 years in the business and we are now the only company in Ireland that have successfully amalgamated the traditional steeplejack methods with the more modern rope access techniques. This work goes back for three generations in my family - my grandfather started in 1901, then my uncles worked in it and now me. I myself worked previously as a tennis coach which I found monotonous but when I joined the steeplejack trade it was so different, a different challenge every day working with historic buildings. I have a good head for heights and am quite daring but my grandfather always said fear is healthy and I am always concerned if there is no fear as complacency kills.” Brian went on to explain he read about the lightning strike on the church which happened last Christmas Day after which he contacted Archdeacon Huss. “Lightning protection is part of our work. We agreed to run a survey on the spire and the structure during which we discovered there was damage to stonework which had

work done on it 25 years ago. Back then sand and cement was used to re‑point some of the stone, and in older buildings, this can cause untold damage to the stonework. We started re‑pointing, as well as doing stone replacement and stone indents. The steeplejack work on the spire is the least of the work while the stone masons are carrying out work around the arch on the doorway which has to be replaced.” Brian commended the stonemasons who originally built the church on their work and skill which was second to none, he said. “If you ran a plumb line from the top of the church spire to the ground it wouldn’t be 2mm out,” he said. As locals and tourists watched in amazement tradesmen on ropes carry out their work on the steeple Brian explained the importance of health and safety to their company. “Health and Safety is to the fore - we are trained and certified every three years which entails a week long course. This is great for us and we also carry out our own training in-between times looking at safety in depth as one mistake on site could be final.” In conclusion Brian praised the support of the people of Donegal for the project. “We have carried out a lot of work over the

years on churches of different religions and very seldom have seen the support from all corners of the community that this work on Donegal Parish Church has received, I think it is tremendous.” Rainey Restoration are no strangers to the town as they have previously carried out work on Donegal Castle for the OPW.

Musings of Times Past Seamus McManus

Seamus first made his appearance into our lives in 1946, the year after the Ssecond World War had ended. The older children in the village all remembered Seamus who had come to the village almost every year up until the outbreak of war in 1939. Tales of his generosity, his storytelling and his ‘Pied Piper’ stature were well written into local folklore and during the years of his absence he took on the mantle of a giant mythical man returning to his place of birth annually, a harbinger of unending summer days spent in his almost God-like presence.

But let me at this stage go back to the beginning and to a Seamus of whom not a great amount was known regarding his earlier years. He was born in the village of Mountcharles around 1870. The house where he was born no longer stands but I remember it belonging to Willie Griffin, a tailor with long flowing white hair. Willie’s workroom and tailor’s bench looked down on the Village Main Street and Willie told us as children that this was the room Seamus was born in. He was educated in Glencoagh National School, the self same academy I and all the children of the village were taught in. He then moved to the ‘Model’ School in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh and here he trained as a teacher. Upon graduating he returned the 40 miles or so to become head teacher in his old primary school. His title here was the rather anachronistically termed ‘monitor’ which had a certain Dickensian ring about it.

Around this time there was a Gaelic Revival starting to blossom in Ireland. This resurgence could be seen in the works of W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. Seamus, imbued with this spirit of Nationalism, visited a Feis in Belfast in 1896. The Feis or Feiseanna were gatherings of like minded people who wished to give expression to their Irishness, their patriotism and Irish republicanism through the medium of Irish song, dance and music. At this Feis in 1896 he met with two of the leading lights of this revival, Anna Johnston and Alice Milligan, who produced a ‘Gaelic’ newspaper entitled ‘The Shan Van Vocht’ translated as the ‘poor old woman’. No doubt they had Ireland in mind with this attribution. Anna Johnston used the penname of Ethna Carbery and she prevailed on Seamus to become a contributor to the production. She was a writer of some repute in the literary circles of the day and her two best known works were ‘The Four Winds of Erin’ and ‘The Passionate Hearts’. She was also a poet of some standing and her great poem ‘The Passing of The Gael’ stands proud in the great anthology of English poetry. Another poem, ‘Rody M’Corley’, the story of a young man from Toome in County Antrim who was executed for his role in the failed insurrection of 1798, is still alive and well and is played unfailingly in Croke Park by the Artane Band before each All Ireland final, both hurling and football. Anna Johnston’s family were reputedly a wealthy merchant family in Belfast and this may have been the reason for using the pseudonym Ethna Carbery. In 1898 there were a series of Feiseanna held in South West Donegal and on Friday September 1st 1898 a Feis was held at Barnesmore, about eight miles from Mountcharles. Barnesmore Gap is the beautiful azure break in the Bluestack mountains which separates the south of the county from its northern neighbour, hence the old description of someone from Ballybofey or Letterkenny as being from

‘Through The Gap’. Both Ethna Carbery and Alice Milligan attended and it was said that on this occasion Seamus started to take more than a passing interest in the striking looking beauty Ethna. He had been commissioned by a Paris newspaper to visit New York and do a series of articles on the Irish who had recently arrived after the failed Fenian Rising of 1867. He soon returned home and he and Ethna Carbery were married in August 1901 only to be tragically separated by her death in child birth in April 1902. Distraught at the cruel death of his beautiful young wife and child, Seamus was also coming to the attention of the authorities for his thinly veiled anti‑British sentiments which he had no difficulty in passing on to impressionable pupils in his capacity as monitor. His situation became untenable and in 1902 Seamus left finally to settle in America. He used his great knowledge of Irish History and Irish Folklore to good effect and became a visiting lecturer on the subject throughout the universities of the Northern States of the USA where his version of Irish history and the acts of terror performed by ‘Perfidious Albion’ as he saw it fell on the fertile soil of first and second generation Irish Americans. We can only assume that this is how Seamus lived until his eventual retirement in the mid 1930’s when he began again to visit Ireland annually from his retirement home in Florida. Having given a very fleeting and possibly not too accurate oversight of the early part of Seamus McManus’s younger days, I shall now fast forward to 1946 - the year after World War II ended when I first laid eyes on this mythical hero, the knowledge of whose great wealth, generosity, love of children and all things Irish had preceded him. New classrooms for AVS Pat the Cope Gallagher confirmed to The Eye on Donegal that the Department of Education has approved in principle the provision of two new temporary classrooms and six new permanent general classrooms for the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town. He added the AVS will see its school numbers increase this year with an intake of 185 first year students and further growth is anticipated over the next number of years. This will cause

accommodation problems and this

announcement will go some way to meeting that extra need for classrooms within the school. “It is anticipated this project will make swift progress through the various stages and I know that both the ETB and the Department of Education will work closely together in order to deliver this in a timely fashion. It is essential that there are no further delays in adding these extra rooms to the Abbey Vocational School,” he said.

Gardening with Emer STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES

After a recent visit to Salthill Gardens in Mountcharles my appreciation for the beautiful scents a garden can produce has been reawakened. Climbing roses, paeonies, lilies and herbs were among the multitude of sweet smells you could pick up as you followed the paths around the garden. It created an atmosphere that I imagine would be equally as pleasing to someone who couldn’t see the great display of June blooms. For many years there was a desire among plant breeders to create new colours and varieties of popular flowers. Due to extensive crossbreeding, the beautiful scents that the originals possessed were often absent from the new plants. It is a complaint that I often hear, especially regarding roses. Smell is one of the most powerful triggers for memories and many are nostalgic for the scent of the roses of their childhoods. That being said, the trend is starting to come back around

and there is a surge in popularity for perennials, roses, climbers and annuals that are heavily scented. There are too many to mention but a number of my favourite scented plants include: Rosa ‘Zepherine Drouhin’ – a large pink flowered climbing rose, Rosa ‘Korresia’ – a bright yellow flowering floribunda rose, Jasmine nudiflorum – a yellow winter flowering climber, Lavender ‘Hidcote’ – a dark blue flowering shrub with scented flowers and foliage, Lemon Verbena – a tender herb with leaves that have a strong citrus fragrance, and for seasonal pots it is hard to beat the soft scent of Violas. If your garden is missing the essential invisible layer of fragrance, call in to us at Ashtree Garden Centre to browse through our benches and ask for our advice on finding some scented plants that you won’t be able to wait to bring home! Cllr Conaghan stated that there will be considerable inconvenience during the work with road closures and diversions in place. Donegal Town Women’s Group

The Women’s Group meet every Friday at 11am in the Family Resource Centre, Upper Main Street, Donegal Town, for a chat and cuppa. Every third week the group meets in different cafés in town for tea and scones. We have a wide variety of outings, events, taster classes, guest speakers and courses. Presently the group’s activities include horse-riding, beginners’ swimming classes, kayaking and Spanish for your holidays. The Family Resource Centre has organised many arts and crafts sessions which the group have enjoyed. The recent découpage course proved hugely popular. Recently we have hosted guest speakers on wide-ranging topics including “Protecting your Banking and Data” and “Personal Development and Awareness”; coming up in August there will be a talk on Road Safety Awareness. Outings are organised to the theatre and musicals, and we are looking forward to the

group’s outing to Harvey’s Cabaret Night in July. On Thursday August 16th we plan to visit the Fleadh Cheoil in Drogheda. Bus leaving Donegal Town at 8.30am and returning approximately 8.30pm. Jim Gallagher - An Appreciation It was with a great sadness that the parish of Inver said goodbye to a much-loved man on the 22nd of June 2017. On that day, Jim Gallagher lost his five year battle with illness and said goodbye to the people and place he had lived in, loved and served for almost all his seventy years. Although Jim was born in Scotland, the family moved to Bundoran while his father John worked on the construction of the Cathaleen’s Falls’ hydroelectric scheme in Ballyshannon. Jim’s mother, Theresa, was a native of Frosses Village. When they returned to live there, Jim was nine years old. He would continue to reside in the village and get married and raise his own family there over the next sixty years. After his secondary education at St. Eunan’s College in Letterkenny he completed a marine radio officer’s course, receiving his City and Guilds qualification in electronics at Atlantic College in Dublin, later to become the Institute of Technology, Kevin Street. Being multi-skilled and talented in electrics, plumbing, painting, tiling and decorating his “can-do”, “Jim’ll fix it” attitude was to take him into every home in the village and beyond. His sense of perfection and taste guaranteed satisfaction. Jim married Bernadette Carr from Kilcar in 1979 and his four children and two grandchildren live in Frosses now. Jim was a talented guitar player and singer who with his brother John and Uncle Brendan and various friends played in the group “The Glen Eany Folk” in the 1970’s. Well known at the time in singing lounges and hotels, their varied repertoire and style was much in demand. This love of

music would last through his whole life and indeed as recently as two years ago he sang on stage at the Frosses Fair Day Show. His inimitable style was appreciated by younger audiences too. With the Frosses Drama Society he sang his way through “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Oliver” and enjoyed lead roles in their many productions.

Most people will remember Jim from his starring role as sacristan in St. Mary’s chapel. At weddings, funerals and christenings he was always there to ensure everyone was at ease and things ran smoothly. He kept many of the parish priests on time and in order! He was recently personally grieved to part with his great friend Fr. John McLoone. The bishops and priests of the diocese knew him well and trusted his opinion and judgement on all matters relating to the upkeep of the church.

But his greatest starring role was as husband, father and grandfather – a role which he carried out and completed with love and dedication. His wife Bernadette, his daughters Tracy, Laura and Jacqueline and his son Ian, while sorely grieved, are his greatest legacy of love. His funeral Mass concelebrated by Fr. Seamas Gallagher P.P. with Fr. McBrearty, Fr. Sweeney, Fr. Ferry, Fr. Dagens, Fr. Eamonn, Fr. Rory and Fr Eddie in attendance was a testament to the love and esteem in which Jim was held by all who knew him. As someone commented at the wake “How will we do without him? Jim WAS Frosses”. But alas Jim we would not hold onto you as your illness progressed and you bore it so bravely. So with a sense of thanksgiving and gratitude for the love you shared with us we gladly hand you back to God. Thank you for the gift you are. Ar dheis Dé go raibh d’anam dilis.

U8 & U10 girls Ballyshannon The Four Masters U8 & U10 girls had their first away game in Ballyshannon on Tuesday evening, a great evening’s football and thanks to Aodh Ruadh for the invitation and all who travelled and helped out. U8 & U10 girls Ardara Four Masters Girls, U8’s and U10’s travelled to Ardara for a blitz against Ardara, Dungloe and Aodh Rua. Both teams performed admirably playing excellent football and showing great commitment and determination in a very windy and cold Kentucky. Thank you to all the girls, parents and coaches who travelled to Ardara. Finally, thank you to Clg An Ratha for their invitation and hospitality. Under 12’s Burt Our U12 girls travelled Burt on Saturday to play our Division 2 All County Blitz. We played four difficult games in very windy conditions vs Gaobh Dobhair, Burt, St Eunans and Glenfin. The girls battled well, improving with every game. There was some great teamwork and well worked scores along with resolute defending. The girls’ efforts were rewarded with a win in the final game vs Glenfin. With a squad of 22 travelling to Burt, we were the best represented club in the blitz and the girls did Four Masters proud. Thanks to all the parents who travelled and supported the girls. Thanks also to the Burt GAA club who were great hosts on the day. Under 14’s Girls U14 Girls League Result. Four Masters 1-11 Moville 3-9. There is a saying in football that goals win games, it certainly was the case in this enthralling and nail biting contest between two very evenly matched teams. Moville started the

game on the front foot and looked like they were going to over-run their opponents as they scored two quick goals and a point. Then Aoife Cox, Aisling Kee and Ellen Canavaghan scored some wonderful points. Moville tagged on another two points before Emma Sweeney blasted to the Moville net from close range to get Four Masters right back into the game. It was now Four Masters turn to pile on the pressure as Aisling Kee, Emma Sweeney and Kayleigh Boyle all scored points and in truth several goal chances went a begging. As half time sounded the teams were all square. Second half began in much the same fashion as the first, with Moville scoring 1-5 to 1 point, before the Four Masters girls clicked into gear and laid siege on the Moville goal area. Points from Kayleigh Boyle, Lucy Monaghan, Aoife Cox, Aisling Kee, and Emma Sweeney, but in all fairness several goal chances were missed or not taken. Full time sounded to leave a very relieved Moville winners by 4 points. This was a game the Four Masters girls will feel they let slip by. But it was a fantastic effort from all the girls. Best for Four Masters were, Lucy Monaghan, Aoife Cox, Emma and Laura Sweeney, Aine Ward, Holly Roarty, Ellen Canavaghan, but all the girls put in a fantastic effort. Best for Moville were Katherine McLaughlin, Shannon Leach and Olivia Doherty. Killymard Team The Killymard NS team won the semi final in The Cumann na mBunscol. After a tight first 10 minutes the Killymard girls took complete control of the game and from then on until the end they never let up in their relentless score taking as they ran out comprehensive winners, and will now play the final probably next week. Four Masters Ladies There was no correct guess in the recent Four Masters Ladies ‘Guess the Score’ competition, therefore a winner was drawn from those who entered and selected the winning county. The winner of the prize of €100 is John Murphy (sold by Aoife Mackle). The seller prizes go to Ava Ward and Katie Timoney. All winners will be contacted shortly with their prizes

Donegal Ladies Retain Their Title The Donegal Senior Ladies amassed an incredible scoreline of 9-21 in the Ulster Ladies final at Brewster Park in Enniskillen on Sunday last to retain their title and become Ulster Ladies Senior Football Champions 2018. The sides were level in the 21st minute, 1-7 to 2-4 before the Donegal side upped their game and went on to win the match by an amazing 28 point margin. Final score: Donegal 9-21, Armagh 4-8.

Naomh Brid Notes There was no overall winner of this week’s lotto draw. The jackpot now stands at €7,050. The numbers drawn were 8, 13, 15, 18, 23. Mountcharles Rowing Club Mountcharles Rowing Club open evenings every Tuesday, 7pm to 9pm at the Big Pier. Everyone welcome, come along and give it a go. They are a very welcoming club and would love to see new faces. Life jackets and training provided for beginners.

EYE on SPORT Donegal Town F.C. Notes U12 – Donegal/Killymard put in a battling display away at Dunkineely Celtic last time out and were unfortunate not to get something out of the game. Next up is a home game this week v Erne Wanderers. Donegal Town had a narrow victory over Drumbar United at the weekend with the team putting in an excellent performance. Donegal Town will return to action after the summer break. U14 – Our U14s had a free weekend last weekend but return to action with a double header this week. First up is a trip to play Killybegs before a home game v Dunkineely Celtic next Saturday. Summer Camp Donegal Town F.C.’s Summer Soccer Camp returns this year once again and will take place from July 3rd-6th.
