Kay first on the bus to Leghowney Kay Sinclair made history as the first passenger on the new Local Link bus service to Leghowney Country Market. The recently announced service had its first outing running from Donegal Town to Leghowney Country Market last Saturday, 9th June. Starting from the Diamond, the route is determined by expressions of interest from those wishing to travel to the Market. The next Market at Leghowney is on Saturday 22nd June from 10am to 1pm - the bus will leave the Diamond at 10am and 11.15am. If you or somebody you know would like to avail of this service contact James McCrudden on 086‑3592668 and the bus pick-up points can be arranged to accommodate you. At the market you can see and purchase all the wonderful local produce on offer, take a stroll around the Leghowney Loop Scenic Walk and be back in time for that yummy

(Serves 4-6) How do you make an expensive chicken fillet go further? Simply place the fillet in a large plastic bag and flatten it evenly to 1cm thickness using a rolling pin. Remove and cut in half diagonally. Repeat if more than one fillet available. Yes, a 150grm chicken fillet will serve two when prepped and made into an escalope. Make sure to buy Bord Bia Quality Mark chicken fillets, as this guarantees traceability and that fillets haven’t been pumped with water and additives. Ingredients 3 x 150grms Bord Bia chicken fillets 1 lemon (zest and juice) 2 tblsp finely chopped parsley 1 tblsp rapeseed oil Seasoning Method 1. Using the 3 chicken fillets make 6 chicken escalopes following instructions above. 2. Into the same plastic bag, pop in the rest of the ingredients. Pop in the chicken escalopes and shake around in the marinade. 3. Place the bag in a fridge on the bottom shelf for a minimum 30 minutes and no longer than 2 hours (after 2 hours the citric acid in the lemon juice changes the structure of the chicken with a negative effect). 4. Heat up a frying pan. Remove the escalopes and when the pan is hot, place the 6 chicken escalopes on the pan, cook for 6 - 7 minutes, turn over and cook for a further 5 – 6 minutes or until golden brown and when pressed the juices run clear not pink. (Discard the plastic bag and marinade). 5. Serve immediately with a salad or vegetables and crushed new potatoes.

Check out our own Irishgrown first, if these aren’t available make sure potatoes are small and waxy. Ingredients 500grms New Potatoes Salt Olive Oil or butter Method 1. Wash the potatoes and boil or steam until cooked. 2. Whilst hot, crush the potatoes very gently with a potato masher. 3. Season and drizzle with oil or melted butter. 4. Serve immediately. Ingredients: 4oz. cornflour; 4 oz. sugar; 4oz butter 2 eggs; 2 tablespoons flour A good tablespoon B. Powder Method: Beat butter and sugar to a cream. Beat up the eggs and add them with cornflour, by degrees, beating well after each addition. Add the B. Powder last of all beating it well in. Pour into a small well-greased and papered tin and put into a hot oven to bake for 20 minutes to half an hour.

Most people have a gap under the inside of their foot when they are standing. This is called your medial arch and in some people this arch is very low or completely fallen; this is known as flat feet. Flat feet can be inherited or can be a result of flexible ligaments, arthritis or torn tendons in the foot. Flat fleet is not a disease or condition and if your flat fleet cause you no problems then leave them alone.
You may need to seek advice about flat feet if… • they have recently developed • your shoes wear out very quickly • you have foot, leg or back pain that is not helped by wearing supportive, well-fitted shoes If you are getting pain from your flat feet a physiotherapist or podiatrist will be able to assess and provide advice on the best course of action. Following on from publishing an old photo of McCaffrey’s shop on Main Street, Donegal Town in last week’s issue, we received this fascinating piece of history from James McDaid, Finadoose.
Henry McCaffrey - The man behind the photo The Carrs moved to Bridge Street and Henry McCaffrey from Skreen moved in. He married Annie - daughter of Francis and Mary Cassidy (née Flaherty) of Drumbar - on 20th Jan 1907 at St Agatha’s Church, Clar. The property and another were put up for sale in September 1905.
At the Donegal Petty Sessions held July 1906 before Messrs James Timoney JP, Hugh MacDonnell Hughes JP, and Babington Millar JP, Henry McCaffrey applied for and was granted a transfer of licence from Mrs Bridget Gallagher for a property further up the street (now the Manhattan). He never used the licence and in September 1908, he transferred it to Patrick Gildea. A meeting of the Gaelic League was held in the Shamrock Hall on Main Street in October 1905 when Henry McCaffrey was presiding. He called for an endeavour “by every means in our powers” to organise a Gaelic football and hurling team. A committee was This property was once part of a terrace of three houses set back from the line of houses on Main Street, situated where now stands the Central Bar, Studio Five and F. Gallagher. The valuation of 1839 shows one of the three nearest the Diamond was occupied by T. Rea; the house had an office and small confined yard and it was used as a shop. The next or middle house was unoccupied and was described as a small house which was recently occupied by Alexander Thomson. It had offices and a yard. The third of the three and furthest from the Diamond was described as a private house, office and small yard; Andrew Fyfe was a tenant before the present Mrs Cassidy. By the Griffith’s valuation of 1857 the houses had been demolished and rebuilt with frontage alligned with the properties on either side. The landlord was Jane Gallagher who had tenants in them; Neal Martin was in what is now the Central Bar, Anne Kelly in what is now Studio Five and James Floyd in what is now F. Gallagher’s. By the 1901 census the occupiers of the middle building were John and Mary Anne Carr (née Quinn), merchants’, and their two children Bridget and Charles. Camie Quinn (a sister) and Michael Byrne, a School Teacher, were also living there.

Monsignor Walker was unanimously chosen chairman and Rev Chapman vice-chairman. Henry McCaffrey was appointed clerk to the committee, remuneration to be in accordance with the scale. The 1911 census shows Annie Cecilia age 30 as head of the family. She was a widow with three young children - Mary Winifred age 3, Annie Christina age 2 and new born Henry Joseph. Annie was carrying on the Grocery business with the help of John Kelly, age 16, a shop man. Henry had died of pneumonia on 4th May 1910 age 39 years, two days before his son was born.

Be careful with Giant Hogweed People are being urged to be careful not to have contact with Giant Hogweed a plant that is growing along some of our roadsides and riverbanks. The plant can cause severe skin burns and blisters. Recently the plant has seen a spurt in growth due to the warm temperatures and accordingly there has been an increase in the amounts of Giant Hogweed burns reported. Giant Hogweed is sometimes know by its common name of cow parsley and can grow up to five meters (16ft) tall. Donegal County Council have warning signs erected along roadsides where Giant Hogweed is growing and have said they will be including the treatment of Giant Hogweed along public roads in their Invasive Species treatment programme this year.

There are a few prerequisites before securing a loan from Donegal Town Credit Union ■ You must be a Member (either working or living in our Common Bond Area) ■ You must be able to produce documentation i.e. Photo ID, Proof of Address, Proof of PPS and Proof of Income ■ There is a myth that you must have at least half savings against your loan…actually you will be advised by the Loans Officer of the amount needed to secure a loan.
Personal Loans
All loans are personal loans as there is a contractual agreement between you the Member and the Credit Union – what is different are perhaps the repayment terms, duration of loan or interest rates. When comparing and measuring differences for repayments, it is important to ‘compare apples with apples’, hence the need to find the APR% (Annual Percentage Rate) for each product. APR% rate is the value that includes all additional charges i.e. setup charges, insurance and by law, all lenders must display this under the Consumer Credit Act 1995. Our rate for a personal loan is 12.68% APR. The Member may receive an interest rebate on the value of all interest paid for the year. One
of the many benefits of a CU loan is that as your principal reduces so too will the interest paid, as opposed to a fixed interest payment for the duration of the loan. Personal loans can also be paid early without penalty and every loan at the Credit Union is insured so that a loan obligation does not fall to another family member in event of death. For a €1000, 1-year variable loan with weekly repayments of €20.43 and an interest rate of 12.68% (APR), the total repayments would be €1061.95
Secure Loans
Donegal Town Credit Union members can borrow against their current savings with a ‘share secured loan’ meaning that their shares will be frozen against the new loan amount. We offer a very competitive rate of 6.18%APR, however there are no rebates payable on this loan type. Many Members find it more beneficial to repay a loan rather than replace savings. For a €3,000, 1-year variable rate loan with an interest rate of 6%, an Annual Percentage Rate of 6.18%, the weekly repayment will be €59.48 and the total amount repayable will be €3,092.47

- from the 2018 Irish Bestsellers list. The austere, uninviting building that sits just outside the town of Tuam has always symbolized despair, hopelessness, and sorrow. If the walls could talk, they would tell a tale, beginning in 1841, of people who were shunned from society and forced to reside in a miserable existence. The homeless, the abandoned, the ones deemed “crazy”, lived there because they simply had nowhere else to go. From 1925-1961, the horrific living conditions continued when the Tuam Mother and Baby Home opened its doors to pregnant unmarried women who were deemed sinners and sent to “The Home”. This book tells the detailed, true story of one of these women, Bridget Dolan, who endured the shame and deplorable conditions, not once but twice, at a place that few could fathom today. The author’s facts are based on in-depth interviews with Anna Corrigan, Bridget’s legitimate daughter, who learned that her mother had a secret life long before her birth. Little did Anna know of the agony her mother endured at the hands of those in charge of caring for these naive women. It was the discovery in 2017 of numerous corpses buried in Tuam that propelled Anna to question if her siblings could actually be buried there, discarded and forgotten like so many others. Her mother never spoke of giving birth to two sons, so Anna became determined to find the truth of what actually happened to her brothers. This is a painstaking look at a dark period in history. Throughout the book are fascinating photos of Bridget and her family in happier days when she eventually found peace and happiness with Anna’s father. The list of names of the deceased at the end of the book sheds light on the magnitude of how many lives were lost. So much of this story remains a mystery, a period of time many would like to forget. But to Anna Corrigan and author Alison O’Reilly, this is a story that needs to be told, and together, they will continue their quest into 2019 as the investigation continues. It is their mission to ensure that these unfortunate souls will find the peace and recognition that eluded them so long ago.

Congratulations to Chef Mark Johnston from Copany, who is co-owner of the The Beara Coast Hotel in Castletownbere, on coming 2nd in the World Chowder Championship last week. Mark won the All-Ireland Chowder Championship in Kinsale in April this year. That win positioned him to represent Ireland at the World Chowder Championship. He served out over 7,000 portions of chowder last Saturday in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, as part of the World Chowder Championship competition. Coming second in the world is a fantastic achievement for Mark and we are all very proud of him.

Gardening with Emer WILDFLOWER PATCH With current gardening trends leaning towards wildlife friendly areas and low maintenance plants, it is no surprise that wildflower patches and meadows are increasing in popularity. You may even notice that wildflowers are being added along some roadside grass verges in an attempt to create more diversity for native pollinators. If you would like to create your own patch at home, wildflowers are ideal for an area in full sun with poor soil. To get started, measure the area you would like to plant, clear it of any weeds or grass, scatter a mixture of wildflower seeds at the rate recommended on the packet and then rake them over to ensure good contact with the soil. Germination can take 3-8 weeks depending on the varieties but after that you can just sit back and enjoy the mixtures of colours bursting to life and the swarms of butterflies, bees and other pollinators coming to visit. Most mixes
include self-seeding annuals, biennials and perennials so that your wildflower patch will increase in colour every year. Once established, there is very little maintenance required. It will need to be cut down once a year in September. The cut material should be removed, whether by lawn mower or by rake as this prevents the dead material putting nutrients back into the soil. Your wildflower patch will get much fuller and more colourful year after year so have a little patience and you will be rewarded with a beautiful, wildlife friendly, low maintenance garden bed. Rare visitors spotted in Donegal
A walk at Sheskinmore Nature Reserve, near Ardara, last Sunday turned out to be special as we spotted two unusual birds in a flock of starlings. A closer look identified them as Rose Coloured, or Rosy, Starlings. This species is a native of eastern Europe and southern Asia where they are found on the steppes and on open agricultural land. In years when their food is abundant, numbers can erupt and birds migrate to western Europe. This year they have been seen in a few places in the UK and France as well as here in Ireland. Look out for them as they are very distinctive and it may be a long while before they reappear. A Rosy Starling at Sheskinmore Nature Reserve.

Padre Pio
Padre Pio was born in the small farming town of Pietrelcina, Italy on May 25, 1887. Even as a young boy, he had already shown signs of extraordinary gifts of grace. His mother described him as a quiet child who, from his earliest years, loved to go to church and to pray. When he was fifteen years old, he was admitted to the novitiate of the Capuchin Order of the Friars Minor in Morcone, Italy. On August 10, 1910, at the age of twenty-three, Padre Pio was ordained to the priesthood. His parishioners were deeply impressed by his piety and they began to come to him, seeking his counsel. Padre Pio was a man of prayer. He prayed almost continuously. His prayers were usually very simple. He loved to pray the Rosary and recommended it to others. Padre Pio suffered from poor health his entire life. After his ordination to the priesthood, he remained in his hometown of Pietrelcina and was separated from his religious community for more than five years due to his poor health. Although the cause of his prolonged and debilitating illnesses remained a mystery to his doctors, Padre Pio did not become discouraged. He offered all of his bodily sufferings to God as a sacrifice, for the conversion of souls. The marks of the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, appeared on Padre Pio’s body, on Friday, September 20, 1918. With resignation and serenity, he bore the painful wounds in his hands, feet, and side for fifty years. In his monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo, he lived the Franciscan spirit of poverty with detachment from self, from possessions, and from comforts. Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one. Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio on June 16, 2002.

Bus Éireann launches Summer Service for Pilgrims to Lough Derg
Bus Éireann is running Route 486 service to the island of Lough Derg for the season. Based on demand, the service will be available from Friday to Monday each week, including the August Bank Holiday. The service will operate from 1st June until 13th August 2018. One daily service will depart Ballyshannon at 10.15am, arriving in Lough Derg, via Pettigo, at 11am. Another daily service will depart from Enniskillen at 1pm, arriving at Lough Derg, via Pettigo, at 2.05pm. Services returning to Enniskillen from Lough Derg will leave at 11am and arrive at Enniskillen at 12.20pm. Services to Ballyshannon will depart Lough Derg at 2.05pm and arrive at Ballyshannon at 2.50pm. Day Return fares to Lough Derg from Enniskillen cost €18, and from Ballyshannon will cost €19.50. Free Travel passes will also be accepted on these services.

Glenswilly the boys from St Francis National School, Barnesmore wrote themselves into the history books by winning the Cumann na mBunscol title for small to medium sized schools against a very good Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg team. Playing in extremely warm conditions the boys got off to a great start by hitting the first two points of the game, only for Derrybeg to get a goal to lead. Barnes hit back straight away with scores from the Carr brothers and Calum Dunnion. The game was nip and tuck for the first half, with some great play from both sides. However, St Francis were getting on top and a superb point from full back Theo Colhoun really lifted them. They pushed on and led by

New members are welcome with quarterly and half yearly subscription. U8 & U10 girls Four Masters U8 & U10 girls took on near neighbours St Naul’s in Tirconnaill Park on Tuesday evening. We fielded 3 teams, 2 x U10s and 1 x U8s. It was the first outing of the year with some girls representing the Four Masters for the first time. A great effort from all the girls and coaches, thanks to all who helped out this evening.

This jolted the Barnes boys into action and from then on, they took control of the game. Shayne Martin Kilcoyne scored a goal to get them back on track, after good work from Cian Gallagher and they never really looked back after that, tagging on some lovely team scores. The boys dominated from there on, with a
and determination. In fairness to Derrybeg, they never gave up and only for some superb goalkeeping by Daniel O’ Sullivan, the Barnes net minder, it would have been closer. As the final whistle sounded, there were great scenes of celebration as the boys realised what they had achieved for their school and the Barnesmore area. There were some great individual performances but really, this was down to a great team effort from fourteen boys, thirteen boys who were togged out, and one who was injured and could not play, all of whom played their part. There will be more matches in the coming weeks. Under 12 Girls On Tuesday evening our U12 girls treated us to another entertaining game in Tir Chonaill Park. On a very changeable evening, they played out a commendable draw with McChumhaills in a friendly game. All 24 girls got some gametime against a bigger & stronger team. There was never more than a few points between the teams in a game that ebbed & flowed in both directions. The Four Masters girls showed great determination & some fantastic teamwork to create a lot of good scoring opportunities. Our defence was very solid with the girls reading the game well and ensuring they were first to the ball. If it wasn’t for some great saves by the McChumhaills goalkeeper we could have won the match but with a result of 0-14 to 2-08, we are delighted with a draw. Ladies Congratulations to Donegal ladies who beat Monaghan this evening and advance to Ulster Final. Also huge congratulations to Kate Keaney
who came on in second half. This is Kate’s first game with Donegal in over a year, due to injury. Great to see her back! Under 9 Boys The Four Masters U9 boys made the short trip to the border town of Pettigo to take on home side and near neighbours Naomh Brid in an U10 blitz on Saturday morning. With our U10 first team away in Crossmaglen, we still managed to field 2 teams with the other clubs having only one team each. The matches were extremely competitive with excellent defending, tackling and forward play by all our boys. The A team on the day matched their U10 opposition and came away with a win against Naomh Brid and a draw against Pettigo, coming away overall winners. The B team on the day, including some U8 players, were very competitive against the same opposition. A great morning’s football and thanks to Pettigo for hosting and all who attended and helped out.

We had our Annual National Schools 3 v 3 day in St Brigid’s Community Centre, Ballintra on Friday with over 50 kids enjoying a fantastic day’s basketball. This is an introduction to the game for these schools but the winners came from schools with strong ties to our club with the winning teams all featuring our players.

The boys’ competition was won by Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala (Donegal Town) whose players are all currently playing club basketball while the girls’ winners were Scoil an Linbh Íosa (Killymard) again boasting 4 players who play club basketball. The Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala boys were pushed hard in the final by St Francis NS with the Gaelscoil and Killian NS also playing some nice basketball but just losing out in the semi finals. MVP in the boys’ section went to Leo McGowan of the winning team for his all round contribution to his team with some nice passes, drives to the basket and great finishing.
The girls’ section was dominated by Scoil an Linbh Íosa (Killymard) going through the day undefeated playing some great stuff, but it was their efficiency around the basket that made the difference, rarely missing a layup. Again St Francis were the team to put it up to them in the final with Kayleigh Boyle outstanding for them all day but the surprise package in the girls were St Naul’s NS who got better and better as the day went on. They were involved in the game of the day which was a play off to get into the final with St Francis just pipping them 21-20. Aoife Cox was MVP for the Girls tournament as she was fantastic all day and no team got to grips with her ability to drive at the basket and finish. Roisin Lynch and Aine McGuckian (St Naul’s) were impressive, while Kayleigh Boyle (St Francis) and Emma Sweeney (Scoil an Linbh Íosa) all stood out.
Great to see them kitted out in their new basketball gear too. We wouldn’t have been able to run this year’s event without the help of our u16 girls who did a great job all day. Thanks girls, special mention to Natasha Prendiville who did a fantastic job and also to Conneely Transport who always do a great job for us.
Others who served their teams well were Eoghan McPartlan (SARAN), Hugh McGettigan (St Francis), Christian Ward (St Naul’s), Kevin Muldoon was terrific for the Gael Scoil with David Monaghan (St

Donegal scored 1-08 before Down got off the mark and despite losing full back Neil McGee to a straight red card on thirteen minutes the result was never in doubt, with Donegal ultimately winning on a scoreline of 2-22 to 1-12. Donegal now face the provincial decider where they will meet their old manager Rory Gallagher and his new team, Fermanagh. Donegal qualify for their seventh Ulster Final in eight years.

U8’s – The U8’s played a training blitz last week in Killymard. It was a great evening for football with all children getting lots of game time and enjoying themselves. Well done to all. U12 – Donegal Town had a good victory over Drumbar Celtic last Thursday and have two games in quick succession this week firstly against Eany Celtic followed by an away trip to Drumbar United. Donegal/ Killymard lost out to Copany Rovers last week but put in a good team performance. Next up is a home game versus Dunkineely Celtic. U14 – Our U14 team were very unfortunate not to come away with a more positive result at the weekend losing out narrowly to Drumbar Celtic despite scoring four excellent goals. League action continues this week with a trip to play Killybegs. A.G.M. – The Donegal Town F.C. A.G.M. will be held in the Abbey Hotel Donegal Town on Monday 18th June at 8pm.
