Summer Cabaret Line-up Revealed At a launch event in Magee of Donegal on Wednesday 6th June, Noel Cunningham revealed the line‑up of stars who will appear in the famous Harvey’s Point Summer Cabaret this year. Without doubt the cabaret is back and better than ever. For a family outing, a pre-wedding celebration, a group excursion, a birthday or just any old excuse for a fabulous night, then Harvey’s Point is the place. It is truly a night of song, dance, fun and superb food and the stars of the cabaret are ready to make your special occasion extra special this year. The Stars of this year’s cabaret will include Red Hurley, Philomena Begley, Cliona Hagan and Des Willoughby along with resident performers Gary Gamble, Fiddler Adam, Adrian Cullen, Conal Gallen, David James, Gerard & Aine Byrne who are a must see and hear and the Queen of the dance floor Mary B, with the legendary Jody Gallagher and House Band “The Bluestack Ensemble”. Add to this a delicious dinner cooked by award-winning chefs under the direction of Chris McMenamin, the attention and 5-star service from their wonderful staff and of course the inimitable host, Noel Cunningham, to make sure you have the night of a lifetime. The cabaret will run every Wednesday from 27th June until 31st October. The two and a half hour evening will include a fivecourse dinner featuring the Harvey’s Point famous starter and dessert buffets, cabaret and dancing. Tickets cost €59 and special packages are also available combining an evening at the cabaret with an extended stay at Harvey’s Point Hotel.

Last Sunday a large number of people both young and old climbed Carnaween in keeping with the tradition of climbing Carn on the first Sunday in June. It was a glorious day and when a lot of the climbers reached the summit they spent some time taking in the magnificent view.

A proud day for Killybegs
Last Saturday St. Catherines Band, Killybegs, made history when they played at the Aviva Stadium where one of their own, Seamie Coleman led his team out in the first home match since his horrific injury. The band travelled to Dublin on Saturday morning leaving Killybegs at 11am and the family bus left two hours later. Rehearsals were at six o’clock and afterwards it was dinner in the hospitality lounge in the Aviva. “We couldn’t have been treated better”, a parent told The Eye on Donegal. St. Catherines band lined up at 7.40pm to parade onto the pitch and performed both National Anthems in front of a crowd of 33,000. It was a huge honour for them and certainly an unforgettable experience, especially to play on the same pitch as their local hero Seamie Coleman.

A delicious vegan burger could be as simple as a portobello mushroom dusted with garlic powder, very lightly seasoned, sautéed in a frying pan on both sides in a little rapeseed oil for 3 mins and left to cook for 5-7 minutes with a lid on. However, as much I love a simple mushroom burger I absolutely adore a rustic vegan burger made with chickpeas and spices. This recipe is also suitable if following a gluten free and dairy free diet. Vegan Burgers (Makes 8 burgers or 20 - 24 Falafels) 250 grms dried chickpeas (soaked overnight in plenty of boiling water) 2 medium carrots (grated) 1 Onion (peeled and chopped roughly) 2 – 3 cloves garlic (peeled) 1 cup porridge oats (Gluten free if required) 1 tblsp linseed oil (substitute with 1 egg if not following a vegan or dairy free diet) 2tblsp parsley (finely chopped) half tblsp. Ground cumin half tblsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground turmeric Seasoning Method Place all the ingredients into a food processor and blend until combined and making a tight mixture. The mixture is ready when you take out a handful and it easily forms a burger without falling apart. Blend again for a minute or two if this doesn’t happen first time. Shape into 8 burgers or more if you prefer smaller ones. Alternatively make falafels by shaping into balls, slightly smaller than golf ball size. Place in a fridge for at least 10 minutes. Heat oil in a deep fat fryer, fry for 7-9 minutes or 5-6 minutes for smaller burgers and falafels, or until hot in the middle. Serve in a toasted bap, pitta bread or two slices of toast with salsa and *home-made tomato sauce. And of course, if you don’t follow a vegan diet, drizzle the burger with yoghurt and *mint dressing. *recipes in previous weeks’ issues. Salsa Serves 4 -6 With the addition of fresh lime juice to the finely diced fruit and vegetables in this recipe, it becomes the perfect accompaniment to a Vegan Burger. 2 Plum Tomatoes, (de-seeded and finely diced) Half a Green Cucumber (deseeded and finely diced) 1 medium onion (finely diced) Half a Green Pepper (deseeded and finely diced) Juice of half a lime (more if desired) Seasoning Place the prepared fruit and vegetables into a bowl, add the lime juice and season to taste. Go with the extra lime juice if you feel like it. Next Week: Marinated Chicken Escalope with Crushed New Potatoes. Leghowney Community Hall was packed to capacity for Friday night’s Annual Donegal Seafood Extravaganza. What an absolutely fabulous night! Congrats to Chef Zack Gallagher, Mary Crawford and Mary Canavan and all helpers who did a massive amount of work in a very hot kitchen, and made many people very happy with a fantastic array of local seafoods, hot and cold dishes, mixed salads and even something to suit the non fish-lovers. Chef Zack Gallagher even managed to get time to dress the Salmon for his starring role on the Seafood Banquet Table. Well done on all the hard work Zack and thanks and well done to all the younger members of the community who helped for the night.

Minister Simon Harris has been called on to fund expansion of Renal Dialysis services in LUH in next year’s budget. Following confirmation from the HSE that they have no plans for a second Renal Dialysis Unit although a business case was made for further enhancement of the existing unit, Deputy Thomas Pringle has called on the minister to fast-track funding.

A new fast ferry service has come into operation for Tory Island for the summer months. Operating twice daily the ferry will expand transport links to Tory. The contract, which runs from May 26th until July 31st, was finalised last week.
Leap Cards for Donegal
The National Transport Authority has confirmed to Deputy Thomas Pringle that Leap Card services will be rolled out to 11 services across the county shortly. It is understood that initially Leap cards will not be usable on Expressway buses; however new ticket machines may make these services compatible in the future.

While meal routines, particularly lunches and dinners, may be different over the summer months, it is still possible to eat healthy, satisfying meals and stay on your weight loss plan. Many avoid slaving over a hot stove in the good weather and this is where the temptation of takeaways comes in. It’s times like this that a salad is a good option. The dictionary definition of a salad is: a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish or other ingredients.
To keep your salad healthy be aware of dressings! Lighter than light Mayonnaise has improved immensely. Any of the vinegar dressings, like Balsamic are a healthy choice. I love fruit on my salads. Strawberries, grapes, sliced apple, pineapple rings, banana work well. I have also found that this means I need far less calorie laden salad dressing.
Don’t be afraid to add protein ham, chicken, egg, tuna etc. Why not make a healthier homemade coleslaw and potato salad to reduce the calories and keep your weight loss on track? Musings of Times Past Lamps, Lights and Lamplighters by Eamon Monahan Rural Electrification had still not penetrated as far as Mountcharles but our neighbour Donegal Town had its own little powerhouse situated beside the Railway Station run by the McGowan family. It appeared to us out in Mountcharles to fulfil all of the lighting needs of the town. It also fulfilled a need for the people of our own village and the general hinterland. Those of us who owned a radio or wireless as it was then known had to supply the motive power to these much admired appliances by means of a ‘dry battery’ and a ‘wet battery’. To this very day I do not know why the two batteries were required. The ‘dry battery’ was a very large rectangular unit with ‘Ever Ready’ emblazoned on its sides. This unit when properly husbanded could last up to six months and I still remember the price £1 which never changed. Probably these were pre‑inflation days. The wet battery was different totally. Made of very heavy duty glass and the acid could be seen through this almost opaque glass. Some reaction or other occurred inside to produce electricity. However this particular battery had a shorter life span and had to be recharged in McGowan’s power house, roughly every two weeks and this entailed a rail car journey of four miles, and a one hundred yards walk to McGowans, leave your depleted wet battery, pick up your second one which had been charged, pay Mr. McGowan one shilling and head off home with a few pals who were on the same mission. Those at home could then again listen to the conduct of the war or maybe Tom Jenkins and his Palm Court music while they worked. I still remember my father switching on the wireless to hear Hitler’s Propagandist William Joyce commonly called ‘Lord Haw Haw’ starting whatever message he had to impart with “Germany calling, Germany calling”. These Wirelesses, three of whose names I remember were Pye, Cossor and Decca, needed an aerial which ideally would run twenty yards or so outside to a twenty foot high pole to improve the reception. A lovely little story did the rounds of the village regarding the aerials. Charlie O’Sullivan, a well known businessman, bought himself a top of the range ‘Pye’ wireless and ran his aerial away out from the house to a thirty foot high pole. A carter in the village who was of lesser means purchased a much cheaper wireless and as he could not afford the extra for the pole he ran his aerial out into his yard and joined it to his cart which was the highest point he could find. One Sunday evening a local ‘wag’ met the businessman and asked him had he heard the results of the Gaelic football match played that afternoon. “No unfortunately”, said the businessman “there was terrible static, and interference on the wireless this evening”. “I don’t know what kind of a wireless you
have”, said the ‘wag’. “We were down in Packie Dickie’s house last night and from the shaft of his cart we could hear Joe Stalin talking as clear as a bell from Moscow”. For lighting we depended mainly on paraffin oil, candles were always there as a standby but the oil lamp was the main source of illumination. Some of these lamps were quite basic with the wick running down into the oil held at the bottom of the lamp. The top of the wick had always to be kept clean and when lit it drew on the oil in the reservoir below. A globe of very fine glass was attached around the wick and this appeared to give adequate light to the room it was in. Some lamps were larger and some were quite decorative and designed to sit in the middle of a table in the sitting room. To my memory some of these lamps were quite attractive and can still be seen in some homes as family heirlooms. There was also the Aladdin lamp of which I only remember one in Mrs O’Boyle’s, our local dressmaker’s workroom. I still remember it gave a rather silvery type glow. But by far and away the tilley lamp gave the brightest illumination. At one end was a reservoir for oil which could be pressurized with a pump fitted to the reservoir which was then half filled with paraffin oil. A pipe ran from the reservoir for about twelve inches then it turned up at a 90 degree angle and at the top of this was attached the mantle which was made of some type of flame resistant material. A caliper soaked in methylated spirits was hooked to this pipe and then lit. This warmed the oil and air mixture which came through from the now pressurized reservoir. After thirty to forty seconds turn the little valve under the mantle and the hot oil and air pressurised fixture would ignite when a lit match was put to the mantle. This light was much brighter than the standard oil lamp and the sound of the gas and the glow of the mantle is a memory I still treasure as I think of our little kitchen cozy and warm from our tiny Stanley range burning little black clods of turf as us six and our mother and father said the rosary before the younger ones were packed off to bed having had a mug of cocoa. In the really cold nights we luxuriated in the warmth of an earthenware hot water bottle which had been tucked under the bed clothes waiting to greet us. When sleep came as it always quickly did to our tired little frames the hot water bottle would be removed and later with more boiling water used to assist our older siblings on the way to the land of Nod. My father who was the sergeant in the village and his three guards had two fine stout Raleigh bicycles in the garda station and if they were called out at night to go to any of the neighbouring townlands for whatever
reason they brought a peculiar contraption called the Carbide Lamp. Carbide was a dark grey powder and was stored in the ‘Sergeants Office’ under lock and key because it was a form of explosive. This powder was stored in the bottom of the lamp. Over it was a small reservoir of water which went drip, drip, on to the powder which gave off a flammable gas which came through a jet at the top of the lamp and when lit gave some form of illumination. How good it was I do not know but I do know that on a few occasions when the lamp was being prepared my brother and I managed to secrete some of this magical powder. I remember putting it into a sealed tin then we put a little hole in the tin soaked a string in paraffin oil and used it as a fuse and when lit I think it may have caused some little bang because if my big brother said it banged it banged. He could do great things and in my eyes never could he fail. He was just that kind of fellow. Our street lighting ritual was a time of great excitement. We had our very own lamplighter, Jimmy Breslin a lovely old man with a huge white mustache stained with the nicotine from the clay pipe that he always appeared to be smoking and I clearly remember him taking his little pipe from his mouth, hold it out from him with a definite certain smile and pronounce to us all ‘sweet as a nut’ referring to the quality of his Mick McQuaid tobacco. Jimmy cleaned and trimmed his storm lanterns every winter evening, filled them with oil and lit them. He then would hang the seven or eight lamps to his stepladder and two of us would have the honour of carrying the ladder replete with lamps to our first lamppost beside Master Gallagher’s at the top of the village. All lamps except the one required were removed from the stepladder. Jimmy mounted the ladder, fitted the lamp and then Pied Piperish led us on to our next lamppost. After more than sixty five years I can see this little ritual being played on dark evenings with our beloved old gentleman Jimmy. Happiness was then - Adolf Hitler may have been creating havoc and diabolical evils across Europe but we, oblivious to these abominations, were safe, secure and happy in our own little part of northwestern Ireland unaware of the suffering of children of our own age and their parents in villages not dissimilar to Mountcharles.

Joey Murrin A pioneer and champion of fishermen Tribute from Pat the Cope I knew Joey all my adult life from the first time I went to Killybegs to work within the fish processing sector. At that time Joey worked on the San Paulin, a boat belonging to the late Tommy Watson. Joey was an exceptional person, who used his talents, attributes and gifts extremely well for the direct benefit of others and the causes he was engaged in. He played a central role in the development and expansion of the fisheries and indeed the entire Marine sector within Ireland. Joey first became involved with the then named Killybegs Fisherman’s Association in 1958, first as Secretary, and later Chairperson. In 1974 he became Chairperson of the Irish Fisherman’s Organisation. Then in 1979 Joey was a founding member of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation where he served as Chief Executive for 22 years. Joey also served as Chairperson of BIM and more recently the Marine Institute. As a consummate professional Joey worked effectively with each of the 15 different Marine Ministers from various Governments during his term while holding them to account for the development of the fishing sector and working with them to progress the potential of coastal communities. The great advantage Joey had over others was he knew the fishing industry so well; having worked as a fisherman as well as a Chief Executive he could speak with complete confidence when dealing with the sector. On a personal level Joey was a true and loyal friend and a trusted confidante, someone who you could always go to for advice or guidance. During my time as Minister for the Marine Joey was a frequent and constant advocate for Killybegs and the broader fishing community. To his wife Betty, his sons Malachy, Joseph, Alan and his daughters Elish, Edel his grandchildren and wider family circle I express my profound sympathies. You have lost a dear husband, an excellent father and an unequalled grandfather. Joey leaves a legacy that will be never be equalled in the fishing community, a legacy of achievement and progression. He lead the sector at the most difficult of times as well as in good times but he never lost focus or direction of what the purpose or goals of his Organisation were. Eternal rest grant to him and may the far shores of Heaven grant you the rest you so richly deserve.

Donegal Airport to extend The county’s only airport has got the green light to go ahead with its expansion plans from Donegal County Council. This will involve extending the existing apron and taxiway at Carrickfinn just months after the airport was voted the world’s most scenic landing. This proposed extension to Donegal Airport will accommodate new aircraft and the grant funding of €326,700 which the airport received recently will go towards covering the costs of the extension.

Donegal Town Credit Union holds a quarterly car draw for members. The Credit Union have been operating Car Draws since 2009, and ensures that it is completed in a fair and transparent way. In addition to distributing over €50,000 in cash prizes in 2017, we also rotate the quarterly car purchase between all the local garages.
Eligibility to join the car draw
The car draws are held quarterly in October, December, March and June. Date, time and locations will be advertised through Facebook, text message and in-house posters. ■ The entrant must be over 16 years of age on or before the draw date. Prior to every car draw, a full review of the entrants is carried out. ■ The entrant must be a member of Donegal Town Credit Union ■ The entrant must pay the annual fee of €40 and ensure that there are funds in their account annually to meet their annual fee. The draw fees will be deducted on the first week of October. ■ The entrant must provide their written consent and agree to the terms and conditions of the car draw.
■ If a member wants to join during the year, they must pay the relevant amount for the remaining draws that are left to end of the draw year. ■ Volunteers, Directors and Staff are eligible to enter the car draw.
Leaving the car draw
■ The member must contact the credit union and provide us with a written instruction (car draw withdrawal form) that they no longer want to take part in the car draw ■ The member will be automatically removed from the car draw if they do not have the funds in their account to pay the annual fee.
Prizes
■ The prize allocation is allocated on the funds received from the car draw subscription. It is monitored on a quarterly basis. ■ The make and type of the car is at the sole discretion of the Directors of the Credit Union. Cash will be given in lieu of the car. The cash equivalent will be decided by the Board of Directors on a fair value basis. ■ Donegal Town Credit Union will not be liable for any defects, or otherwise found in the vehicle supplied. ■ Additional door prizes and junior prizes are also allocated from the car draw funds. ■ All winners are notified by phone the next morning. A full list of winners is also put up on the website. Members call into the credit union to pick up their prizes and they sign to confirm that they received their prize. ■ In the event that the winning member is a person who is in arrears or in default of carrying out any financial commitment to the Credit Union, the Board of Directors may make a decision to withhold the delivery of the prize won by the member until the arrears have been paid or the default has been rectified. ■ Only paid up Members are entitled to receive Door Prizes.

■ Prize draws will be regularly reviewed by both the internal and external audit to ensure that systems and controls are in place and operating ■ The car draw account is held in AIB with a mandate in place ■ The car draw account is reconciled monthly with full detail on all transactions checked. This is reviewed by the CEO. ■ There is dual control on all car draw transactions. ■ Transactions on the prize draw are reviewed on an annual basis by the external auditor ■ The draw is non-profit making. After deduction of operational costs (staff, SMS, refreshments) any surplus funds will be disposed of by way of extra draws. It is operated on a ‘breakeven’ basis. ■ All draws will be held publicly under the supervision of a Peace Commissioner ■ Prize draw transactions and balances are reported in the AGM booklet.

Donegal Castle open for locals and tourists alike
Donegal Castle Manager Sean McLoone and guides Sean Browne, Anne McCaughey, Christina Jose Irwin and Mark Keane have been very busy to date in 2018 welcoming large visitor numbers to the castle. US and European visitors account for a large portion of overall visitors, while Irish and local visitors also feature strongly. In addition to coach bookings and personal visits, the arrival in Killybegs of cruise liners has added to visitor numbers to the castle. The Office of Public Works has introduced a number of initiatives to encourage local visitors to visit the castle; these include free admission to all under 12’s with an accompanying adult, free admission to all visitors on the first Wednesday of each month during the summer season, free admission for all primary and secondary schools, free admission for visitors with physical and intellectual disabilities and their accompanying carers. The castle will host several upcoming events such as the Leghowney market on Saturday 18th August and a family Halloween day on October 28th as well as two Heritage events including storytelling and medieval displays on August 18th and 26th. Admission is free on all of those dates. In the past few years Donegal Castle has hosted a number of high profile events including the royal visit of Prince Charles and Camilla Duchess of Cornwall. Gardening with Emer STRAWBERRY WEEK This week celebrates Bord na Móna’s National Strawberry Week. Here at Ashtree Garden Centre we will have great offers on strawberry plants and strawberry hanging baskets for the week. We also have strawberry themed games set up for children to enjoy. The Potting Shed Tearoom are joining us in the celebrations by offering lots of new strawberry based desserts and treats which will be available all week. If you have never grown your own fruit before, strawberry plants are one of the best to start with. They will grow happily in pots or hanging baskets as well as raised beds or ridges. They require full sun, free draining compost or soil and a taste of tomato food in their water once every fortnight. This will ensure you get an abundance of sweet juicy strawberries to enjoy. If you intend growing your strawberries in hanging baskets,
make sure not to let them dry out as this will hinder growth and fruit production. Strawberries grown in the soil will require mulching with straw to prevent the ripe fruit from coming in contact with the wet soil, as this can cause them to rot. The flavour of home grown strawberries cannot be beaten, but unfortunately the birds know this too, so if you are growing your strawberries outdoors, make sure to cover them with netting before the fruits ripen. The early bird catches the worm but don’t let him put all your work to loss by letting him catch your strawberries too! Prayers were said at Disert Graveyard last Saturday 2nd June. A 3km loop walk from Tymeen clubhouse to the graveyard took place and afterwards there were talks in the clubhouse by Helen Meehan and Fiona Beglane about the history of Disert. Refreshments were served and there was also traditional music with a number of local musicians playing.

The Feast of St. Anthony at Rossnowlagh There is a perpetual Novena to St. Anthony every Tuesday night throughout the year with Mass at 7.30pm at the Fransican Friary, Rossnowlagh. The feast of St. Anthony is 13th June and each year there is a Triduum (three days) in preparation for the feast starting on 10th June with a Mass each evening at 7.30pm. Then on the feast day itself there is a special blessing of lillies (St. Anthony’s flower) after both the 10am and 7.30pm Masses. There is also a special blessing of children at 4pm in the afternoon. Seniors Unfortunately our Reserves were unsuccessful v Fanad Gaels in the AllIreland Gaeltacht in Downings at the weekend. Equally our Seniors were defeated v Termon on Saturday evening. U8’s – The U8’s had an enjoyable blitz down in Eany Celtic last Friday evening. The boys and girls had a great evening and all managers and coaches were extremely proud of their performances. We’re looking forward to seeing these players in action again in the coming weeks. U12 – Donegal/Killymard got their post split season underway with a highly entertaining 3-3 draw with Erne Youths. Next up for Donegal/ Killymard is a trip to play Copany Rovers. Donegal Town had a good result last week against a strong St. Catherines side, earning a positive result. Next up for Donegal Town is a trip to play Killybegs.

Donegal Town U12’s at the Showgrounds recently
Our U12’s recently enjoyed a trip to Sligo Rovers. The team played a few challenge games at the Rovers training ground before heading off for a well earned dinner in Supermacs. The team then returned to the Showgrounds to watch Sligo take on Shamrock Rovers. At half time during the game the boys headed out onto the pitch to be announced to the crowd and have photographs taken. It was a great experience for the boys, and perhaps the experience might inspire some to follow in the steps of club players Liam Martin and Jack Keaney, who have represented Rovers at senior level in recent years. Congratulations to the young Donegal Town players who represented Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí in their Fran Fields Primary Soccer competition and won the overall competition. Congratulations to all involved. Socco Lotto – There was no jackpot winner last week and the jackpot is now €800. The next draw will be held on Monday June 18th. A.G.M. – The Donegal Town F.C. NATIONAL BIKE WEEK
Dublin to Drimarone Charity Cycle
As part of National Bike Week there will be a family cycle starting at 7.00pm from the Bluestack Centre, Drimarone on Tue 12th June 2018. This free event is open to all and the distance is approximately 5km. There will be refreshments served afterwards in the Bluestack Centre. We will also have the launch of the second Drimarone to Dublin Charity Cycle at this event. This year, over 50 cyclists will cycle from Dublin to Drimarone from 27th - 29th July to raise money for local causes. The main benefactor this year is the Hospice Department of Donegal Community Hospital. We look forward to your support as it promises to be a very enjoyable evening.
