Planning application for new Library and Community Building could be lodged in weeks By Margaret Gallagher
Subject to a review of the existing design, a planning application for the new library in Donegal Town could be lodged in weeks. Award-winning local architect Declan McCabe drew up the initial plans for the new building in 2016 and while these will be revised in line with the funding available it is understood that they will remain substantially unchanged as the design was previously approved by the key stakeholders. Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh announced last week a €2.1 million investment package to develop a new community building
The current library is housed in the “Old Tech” building on the Killybegs Road
which will house the long awaited library and will also accommodate a number of other community facilities. In a statement to the Eye on Donegal, Donegal County Council welcomed the Minister’s funding announcement. Donegal Town has been at the top of the Council’s priority list of library developments for quite some years and is included in Cultúr: A Strategic Vision for Cultural Services 20162020. In order to deliver on this project, substantial external funding was required. Joe McHugh TD said, “I cannot thank Minister Ring highly enough for the work that he and his department have put into getting this over the line. Libraries are a part of the social fabric of a community and this significant investment will do wonders for bringing people together to learn from each other, not just from books, this new facility will become a community hub and a place for people to develop skills and interests.” The Department’s investment in the building is €1m and this will be matched by significant contributions from both Donegal County Council and the local sources. The current library is open part-time at 14 hours per week and is housed in the ETB building on the Mountcharles Road. The new library will have a floor area of 500sq metres and will open full time including Saturdays.

There will be an open plan area with access to a multipurpose ICT/training space, community meeting areas, learning areas, space for young people, local history and much more besides. Architecturally, the building is intended to be seen as an important public building and the exterior building shape is evocative of the shape of the Bluestack Mountains against the backdrop of Miller’s Hill. The 2016 plans indicated a two level building of over 1100sq metres and including a plaza outside and inside the building intended for public gatherings, exhibitions and ceremonies. be located within the space which would add to the atmosphere in the building. The Eye on Donegal understands that the new development will be built on the previously proposed site adjacent to the Credit Union with completion expected by 2020. A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said that when Donegal Town Credit Union approached them with their innovative proposal in 2016, it provided the impetus for a new application to the Department’s Capital Investment Programme. The Department is particularly interested in the partnership approach to providing the new library. The County Council says it looks forward to working with local groups to bring this new public building to fruition and to providing new and improved services to the community in Donegal and the wider South and South-West Donegal area.

It was a very steep learning curve and I’ve learned a lot over the years. It’s been thirty years of school runs, lunches, exams and uniforms! The first Catholic graveyard in the parish was opened in 1841 beside the church in Frosses. From this time no priest would officiate at funerals in Disert and the graveyard fell into disuse. Since the Columbian year (1997) mass has been celebrated here near St. Colmcille’s feast day - June 9th. The 2017 mass was celebrated by Fr. Ferry C.C. Mountcharles. Refreshments and home baking were served in the Tymeen clubrooms and Helen Meehan gave a talk on the history and folklore of Disert. Dr. Fiona Beglane archaeologist from IT Sligo, pointed out the main features of the site and their significance; she also explained the aerial drone photographs and geophysical survey done in 2016. Preliminary results of this are being included in a forthcoming publication which will be launched at a ‘Disert night’ in the Bluestack Centre on Sunday 5th August. Other project plans for the coming years include further archaeological and oral history work for Disert and the wider landscape, including Carnaween. A religious gathering will be held at the altar on Saturday 2nd June at 2pm and during Heritage Week on Wednesday 22nd August. Fiona Beglane will lead a walk of the Disert area. The committee would welcome further material including photos etc for their forthcoming book ‘Disert in the Blue Stacks’ Helen Meehan.

Twenty-five changes to Donegal Town draft plan The draft town plans for Donegal Town and Killybegs, have now gone back to public consultation along with Dungloe, Ballybofey-Stranorlar, Ballyshannon, Bridgend and Carndonagh. The public are being asked to consider the proposed material alterations for the plans. There are 118 material alterations being proposed following on from the March meeting of Donegal County Council when the councillors made the changes. Seventeen changes were made to the Dungloe plan, 17 were made to the Ballybofey Stranorlar plan, 26 were made to the Ballyshannon plan, nine to the Bridgend plan, nine to the Carnodonagh plan, 25 to the Donegal Town plan, 12 to the Killybegs plan and three general material alterations. A copy of the proposed Material Alterations can be viewed in the Bayview Hotel, main reception foyer, Killybegs or Donegal Town library, VEC offices, Mountcharles Road. Submissions or observations can be made by post to the Council’s Central Planning Unit at County House in Lifford or by email to sevenlap@donegalcoco.ie before the deadline on Thursday, June 7th.

Flying ace landed in Inishowen In May of 1932 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She took off from Harbour Grace, in Newfoundland, on May 20th heading for Paris but a leak in the plane’s petrol tank forced her to land in Ireland, in fact on the side of a hill in Inishowen close to the border. The owner of the field where she landed, a man by the name of Gallagher, picked her up and drove her into Derry where she contacted her family in America by phone. She apparently did some shopping in Derry and spent the night with the Gallagher Above: Amelia Earhart family. She soon continued on her journey firstly to London and outside the Gallagher then on to Paris. home, May 22nd 1932. Amelia Earhart was awarded The American Flying Cross from Right: Amelia president Hoover. She had a very successful flying career and set with her plane. many records in aviation. Sadly in 1937 she endeavoured to circumnavigate the globe; however her plane went down over the Central Pacific Ocean. Her body has never been found and mystery surrounds her disappearance to this day.

STORIES & CUSTOMERS Over the years working in the shop one comes in contact with many types of characters: pleasant, funny, contrary, thankful and those who don’t believe you. It is always nice when people ask your advice, take it and come back to thank you. In the sixties and seventies customers were much more layed back and easier pleased. Our customers came from a wide area. For example, in the Drimarone area, a man called Emby Meehan had a mini bus service which took many passengers in and out of town on Saturdays for their weekly shopping. He also collected their wet radio batteries from the electrical shop. One day in the early sixties a man came in and asked for four dozen (rolls) of ceiling paper; when asked if he required paste he said no but would take a large roll of string. He went on to explain that he had no ceiling
One day a woman we knew well and could take a joke bought an alarm clock. She left it and said she would collect it before going home on the mini bus at six o’clock. We wound the clock, set the alarm for ten past six and put four or five layers of paper on it all well taped. During the journey off went the alarm and of course she tried to get it un-wrapped; she nearly killed us the next day. Close to closing time on a Christmas Eve a man came in and asked an assistant for a mouse trap, and without smiling the assistant said “Could you not get a turkey?”. Many years ago a very nice customer called Mr. Druery who had an account in the shop, came in and asked me for a Gimlet which I gave him. At the time a new assistant had just started so I told him to charge a Gimlet at two shillings to Mr. Druery. Later when I looked at the book it read: Mr. Gimlet one Druery two shillings. We often laugh about it since.

a Mancuna key cutting machine from J.C. Parkes. It was turned by hand and due to lack of space it was stored under the counter and taken up on top when required. When I started to work part time about 1966 the challenge of cutting keys and working at locks appealed to me. I remember writing to Fogarty Lock & Safe Co., Crane Lane, Dublin for a key blank catalogue. They were agents for DL key blanks. One of the directors, Mr Eamon Williams, has often called in for a chat when on holiday in Donegal and has been very helpful over the years. The key and lock buisness has developed and become more complicated over the years. George now takes charge of a lot of the code cutting and immobiliser programming. My father always had a great interest in clocks. He sold and repaired a lot of Mantel, Wall and Alarm clocks. In the seventies after moving into the present premises we expanded into stocking wallpapers and a larger range of paints. We got a Dulux tinting machine in 1970/71. At that time it boasted 220 colours. At the same time we were stocking Crown ready mixed colours. Later with encouragement from Mr Harry Connelly, area manager for Harringtons/Dulux and a true gentleman, we went all Dulux. In the mid seventies and for some years we dealt in furniture, buying it in Navan. During the 70s/80s we supplied and serviced lawnmowers and chainsaws. Up until 2000 we supplied and fitted window blinds.

Home wanted for cats A colony of 26 cats have been left homeless after their owner died this week suddenly. The Donegal based charity Animals in Need Donegal is appealing to the public to adopt the animals as they have been left without food or shelter. The cats are feral but had been cared for by a local man in Bundoran for many years until his recent death. The charity have found homes for a number of the cats so far and are looking for homes for the rest. How to encourage fitness when your child has no interest in sport? Growing up in a rural community where local sports are such a huge part of life for so many people can make it very difficult for a child to find their way when they have no interest in sport at all! I was one of those children – useless at all ball sports but thankfully found a love for dance. However, I regularly hear from parents who have kids that have no desire to break a sweat in any way. These kids are quite happy painting, drawing and playing musical instruments but don’t have any interest in physical activities or sports. Then there are also those kids who are happy doing nothing at all and need to be motivated to move. Here are a few simple ideas to encourage non-sporty kids to get involved: Remember that kids quickly pick up who is good at something and who isn’t – if they feel inadequate at a sport it can be quite intimidating to join a team. Spend time practicing together before starting a class or club to help build their confidence first Not every child is interested in sport. This is perfectly fine. No child should ever be made feel guilty because of their likes and dislikes – build their confidence and make them proud of the talents they already have and then encourage them to try new things outside of those talents, letting
them know that it’s ok to make mistakes initially. Maybe they never will play for a team or join an athletic class but fitness can become a thing they do with you – take up swimming, go for a walk, take on a project in the garden over the summer months. Buy pedometers for the whole family and help your children become aware of how many steps they should be doing each day – think up fun ways you can achieve these as a family. Donegal Dragons get grant The Donegal Dragons are to receive over €5,000 as part of a wider €300,000 package earmarked for coastal and marine projects across the county. The Dragons applied for grant funding for a defibrillator following an incident last year when a spectator collapsed while enjoying the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Ballyshannon. Following the intervention of the Irish Red Cross and local volunteers, the patient was successfully revived. As well as a defibrillator, the Dragons have been granted enough money to purchase a road trailer for transporting gear to and from the jetty at the pier.

This money can help people who are in hospital come home and remain living independently in their own house for as long as they wish. The housing application grant helps people to make change and adaptions to their home to cater better for their needs; this could include making it wheelchair accessible, extending to create more space, adding a ground floor bathroom or toilet or adding a stair lift grants up to €30,000 are available to assist people with a disability.

Healthy Facts with Physio Éireann This week’s Healthy Facts from Physio Éireann are about the Anterior Cruciate Ligament ACL stands for Anterior Cruciate Ligament: this piece of tissue is in the knee and stops the two bones of the knee from sliding apart. It is most frequently injured during high impact twisting and pivoting sports such as gaelic football and soccer. 70% of ACL tears happen in a non-contact situation: it is the twisting movement that often causes the ligament to tear. When your ACL tears and your knee is unstable you may need surgery to replace it. The surgeon will take a section of your hamstring tendon or your patella tendon and use it to replace your torn ACL. With appropriate rehab it is an excellent replacement and a very successful surgery. Rehabilitation after an ACL tear takes months but when done correctly you can get back playing your sport in 9-12months.
1 - 2tblsp tikka paste 1 tblsp lime juice (use the rest to dress the salad) 3 - 4 Chicken breasts 4 skewers (optional) soaked in water for an hour and dried. Method To make the marinade, mix the first three ingredients together in a medium size glass or metal bowl Place the chicken pieces in a plastic bag, pound the thickest part of the breasts gently with a rolling pin until very slightly flattened. Remove and cut into 7 x 3cm (1½ inch) chunks Place chicken into the yoghurt mix. Stir, cover the bowl with a plate or cling film and place in the fridge to marinade for 20 minutes or up to 4 hours Place 5-7 chicken chunks onto each skewer. (optional – but handy for turning under the grill) Oil the grill pan and place skewers on the grill, cook for 6 or 7 minutes and turn over. Repeat for 4-6 minutes or until chicken is cooked thoroughly. Great for barbecues too. Chicken pieces can be removed from skewers for serving. Serve with Dip In - Dip Out Salad, Yoghurt and Mint Dressing

Potatoes are the main ingredient in this War Pudding which takes three-quarters of an hour to bake in a moderate oven.
WAR PUDDING
Ingredients: 8oz cooked and sieved potatoes, 2oz ground rice; 1 ½ oz fat, 1 tbsp golden syrup; half a lemon; 1 egg, 1 tsp baking powder; 1 tbsp milk Place potatoes and rice in a bowl. Make a hole in the centre. Grate rind and squeeze juice of lemon into the hole. Add syrup, egg (well beaten), fat (melted) and milk and beat well together. Add baking powder and pour into a mould. Bake for 45 minutes in a moderate oven.

Like ourselves, plants need food and water to survive. Understanding the minerals each plant needs can help us choose the correct fertiliser. Every feed will have the ratio of NPK printed on the label. These three numbers represent the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that it contains. Nitrogen is required for producing lush green growth, phosphorus promotes strong roots and potassium is essential in flower and fruit production. Potted plants like those in hanging baskets and window-boxes are likely to suffer without regular feeding. Their roots are restricted and quite often they are competing with a number of plants for food and water. They will benefit greatly from a fortnightly feed of ‘Tomato Food’ as it is high in Potassium (K) which will boost the flower production. Fruiting plants like tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes also require a high potassium feed to increase yield. When you are planting young shrubs, trees or hedging it is advised to add a scattering of ‘Bonemeal’ which is rich in phosphorus (P). This will promote root growth, allowing the plant to anchor itself quicker and search out its own water and feed from the soil. ‘Bonemeal’ is also recommended as a fertiliser for root vegetables including carrots, swedes and potatoes. ‘Poultry Manure’ has become a very popular fertiliser as it is both organic and very effective in promoting green leafy growth in hedges, established shrubs and trees. It has a high nitrogen (N) percentage so it is not recommended for use with bedding plants or fruit bushes. As important as it is to feed your plant, it is equally as important not to over-feed. Adding a little extra than what is recommended can do more damage than good. It can lead to stunted growth, root burn and leaf discolouration. Rising Insurance Costs affecting Men’s Sheds
Thomas Pringle TD raised the issue of rising insurance costs on the community sector in a Dáil question last week. “We know that this is an ongoing issue for the motor industry but little focus has been put on the effects rising insurance costs are having on the community sector and for vital outlets like the Men’s Shed. “The value of the services provided by Men’s Sheds is priceless. They are saving the State by actively engaging with men in the community who would otherwise have little to no other social outlet. “The Minister needs to adequately address the impact of insurance costs on the community sector.” Pringle concluded.

‘Dunkineely, Monday. – A phenomenon of a most remarkable character presented itself to the wondering gaze of the people of this town and neighbourhood upon the night of Thursday last, 7th instant. At about half-past nine o’clock p.m. a luminous, elongated, slender nebula shot itself up from the north-eastern horizon. It resembled the tail of a comet

whose nucleus had not yet made its appearance. Soon the long, slender haze extended itself in a south-west direction till it completely over-arched the sky. Its eastern end then broke loose from the horizon, and in this position the whole band of nebulous light presented a most beautiful appearance. Both extremities glowed with a rich effulgence, whereas the central portion, which passed across the zenith, and was more attenuate, exhibited a less intense degree of luminosity, and might be mistaken for the nebulosity of the milky way. In its whole length it seemed a long, slender streak of beautifully illuminated vapour, passing through the
zenith, and terminating at opposite points of the horizon. The whole gauzelike band appeared to be rapidly moving along its line of length from north-east to southwest, while some other force seemed to carry it slowly southward, that is, in a transverse direction. At first it was seen stretching along between Ursa Major on one side, and the polar star on the other, and extending onward through Auriga, till it veiled the Pleiades in Taurus. Then shifting its place as it moved southward it covered Hyades, Gemini, &c., and lastly, Orion, Leo, &c. At this stage, just as it seemed obscuring the belt of Orion, a group of black clouds spread themselves…’

Vintage Austins at the Mill Park

Members of the Vintage Austin Register Car Club stayed overnight at the Mill Park Hotel last Thursday at the end of their run from England along the north coast ending in Donegal Town. A number of drivers were planning to continue on down the Wild Atlantic Way while the main group returned home. The club is celebrating 60 years this year and this run was part of their Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Pictured are some of the beautifully preserved Austins at the Mill Park last Friday morning.

New artist’s workshop at Craft Village
Lynn with her daughter Emily in their new Craft Shop workshop.
Lynn Costello Erskine, Clar, has moved out to the Craft Village at Lurganboy to join the other crafters. Lynn has set up a letterpress and linoprint workshop where she prints letterpress greeting cards, posters, custom stationery and handpulled linoprints. She told The Eye on Donegal that after restoring ‘Florrie’ which is a treadle based platen dating back to 1872 and a Korrex printing press where she can print old antique wood type, she needed more space so she decided to join the Craft Village. What is unique about all of this is that Lynn does not use electricity to work the machines - it is just the old reliable elbow grease.

Prayers at Disert Prayers will be said at Disert Graveyard on Saturday 2nd June at 2pm. We will meet at Tymeen clubhouse for a 3km loop walk to the graveyard starting at 1pm. Congratulations to the boys’ football team from Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí. They participated in lots of gaelic and soccer competitions during the year and won the Donegal Primary 7's County Final and the Fran Fields Cup. Well done to Maistir Colmán who prepared them for the competitions.

Naomh Brid notes Congratulations to the U16 footballers. The future is bright for Naomh Brid/Pettigo. On Sunday afternoon in Mountcharles the Naomh Brid / Pettigo team played Naomh Ultan in the regional final and had a great win. Naomh Brid / Pettigo won by 3 points, 2-7 to 0-10 in a tough match played in wet conditions where every Naomh Brid/ Pettigo player gave their all to bring home the trophy. They were out on their feet at the final whistle. They are credit to themselves, their families and Naomh Brid / Pettigo and well deserved their victory after their efforts this year. Ethan Mangan had the honour of accepting the trophy on behalf of the team.

Abbey Vocational School Sport
Leaving Cert Students vs the AVS Teachers Tuesday 15th was one enjoyable afternoon as some of our Leaving Cert students played a volleyball match against our very own AVS teachers. Our brave teachers took to the court to take on a mix of Leaving Certs. It was entertaining to say the least! The teachers were victorious in the end. Refreshments followed the heated game so students could relax and enjoy the social event. Thanks to the PE Dept. and also the Guidance Dept. for all of their work in the planning of this event. Active Week Active Week runs from Monday 21st May until Friday 25th the AVS will host Active Week. Our ‘Drop Everything and Walk’ was very successful with staff and students last year and it is guaranteed to be a success this year too as we take to the school track. The active school committee has organised other activities for the week, some of the activities include yoga, self-defence and rowing. Golf Three of our students competed in the Donegal Golf finals last week. Jamie Crawford, Jayden Mgbam and Connor McGoldrick travelled to Dunfanaghy. Four Masters Notes Under 12 Girls
The Four Masters U12 girls played their final league game in a sunny Tir Chonaill Park. With 22 girls available for selection, it was great that Naomh Brid agreed to play 13 a side to give the girls more game time. A much improved Naomh Brid side gave the team management a scare in a tight first half. With plenty of good play throughout the pitch by both sides, scores were level at half time 3-3 to 4 goals. The second half saw the Four Masters girls taking control of the game and continued with some good teamwork scoring a further 2-4 to no reply. The effort and improvement in both teams since the start of the season was remarkable. Well done to all. This victory should secure 2nd place in the league for the Four Masters girls and we all look forward to our upcoming All County Blitz. Club Lotto - There was no winner of the lotto jackpot €5,700 in week 45 of the 2017/18 season draw held in the Abbey Hotel on Monday 21st May 2018. Senior Teams - Donegal Town Saturday Team claimed the Voodoo Venue Cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Cappry Rovers in Convoy. Donegal earned their passage to the final after hard fought victories over Glenea United and Cup favourites Glencar Celtic. The Town dominated this encounter throughout and took a deserved lead when quick thinking from Sean Boyle from a free kick resulted in James Kerrigan hammering home from the back post. Kerrigan doubled the lead shortly after and was once again the right man in the right place nodding home from an Eoin Slevin delivery. The game was effectively over as a contest when Gary Ward lobbed the keeper from a Ciaran O’Reilly through ball. Ward kept his composure well to dink the keeper from the edge of the area. It was a well deserved advantage at the break and Donegal showed no signs of letting up as they added a fourth ten minutes into the second half. David Bustard was the instigator playing a defence splitting ball though to Eoin Slevin who made no mistake. Cappry tried in vain to get back into things but a Donegal defence marshalled by the veteran JP Byrne was never going to be breached. It was a comfortable victory for the Town and Donegal manager Rory Dunlevy was delighted by an excellent display. U14 - The U14 team had a home game versus a strong St. Catherines outfit on Saturday. Next up is a trip to Copany Rovers next Saturday.
