Londis and Top Oil confirmed for Supermac’s Donegal Plaza Multi-Million Euro investment on schedule to open in August by Margaret Gallagher

As the Supermac’s plaza at Drumlonagher gets ready for its windows and doors to be fitted, speculation has mounted locally as to who the fuel provider would be and even more interestingly would we have another ‘Under the tree at Spar’? The Eye on Donegal can now confirm that Top Oil will be the fuel provider and Londis the convenience retail store along with anchor tenant Supermac’s. Franchisee of Supermac’s and Papa John’s at the Donegal Plaza, Ken Foley, who is also a director of Koley Ltd, the operators of the entire site, spoke of how a lot of planning went in to this decision taking into consideration existing retail outlets locally. Supermac’s will open its doors at 6.30am for breakfast and will also operate a 24 hour

window service for a smaller food range. Ken went on to say that they are delighted to bring a high standard “Plaza” to Donegal Town and to open the first Supermac’s in the county. “Donegal is a lovely town, we saw the opportunity and took it, the location is perfect”, he said. “We have received a great response to the positions previously advertised for managerial positions and interviews will take place in the next few weeks. We are recruiting a full spectrum of employees full-time and parttime with a good variety of jobs on offer from shop assistants and chefs to deli assistants, grounds people and much more. Out at Drumlonagher the roof is on and Michael Kelly Jnr. of Glebe Builders confirmed that they are on schedule with this turnkey development. The Donegal Plaza will comprise a two storey filling station of over 10,000sq.ft. incorporating a Londis retail shop, a two storey restaurant with drive-through facility - as well as the four Top Oil fuel pumps with forecourt. Seventy one car parking spaces, two HGV parking spaces, a set down bay for buses, delivery bay and five bicycle stands will be on site. The Supermac’s restaurant will incorporate a Papa John’s Pizza and SuperSubs counter. This development will be great boost to the local economy with Glebe Builders employing 30 employees during the construction while when opened the Supermac’s plaza will have created seventy new jobs in town.

McGinty Fruit Expands by Margaret Gallagher

McGinty Fruit who have been offering fruit and veg since 1947 are expanding their range of products to cover a large range of chilled and ambient products. Fruit and veg will remain their main focus but they will also offer extra food services covering wholesale spices, dried herbs, nuts and seeds, dried fruits, all the chefs’ essentials of sugars, salts, breadcrumbs, baking products, flours, fats and oils, cooking wines as well as diary products including cheeses. McGinty’s will also supply rices, pastas, sauces, mayonnaises, dressings, jams and marmalades. Soft drinks and minerals are also available in addition to a range of cleaning products and much more at very

competitive prices. The story began back in the early 1900’s when Bernard McGinty, from Drimenny, served his time as a draper’s apprentice in McLoone’s shop on the Diamond which is now Dunlevy’s. On completion of his apprenticeship he opened his own drapery shop further down the street where Begley’s Pharmacy is now. He ran very successful shops for over thirty years during which time Bernard’s two sons Peter and Cathal took a keen interest in business. However during the war years times in the drapery business got tough and he had to close his shop and his son Cathal took to the road as a commercial traveller working for McCalliogs of Claremoris

selling hardware and crockery. While on the road Cathal made many acquaintances and one day in 1947 he met an importer who received double the quantity of oranges he needed and he asked Cathal if he would take some of the oranges and try and sell them on the road. So began what became McGinty Fruit where oranges were new to the market and Cathal had the supply.

Starting with their ﬁrst fruit store in ‘Crawfords Hall’ at Milltown in the 1950’s Cathal and Peter expanded their very successful fruit and vegetable wholesale company over the years and in 2008 they moved out to a large new premises off the Clar Road which has ample loading and parking space and a lot more room for refrigeration. The next generation is following in their footsteps and Peader McGinty told the Eye on Donegal that they joined forces with Fullerton’s Fruit Company in Buncrana in 1990 and are now delivering in Derry and Strabane now as well as counties Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo. “We provide a six day service to our customers and are happy that we can deliver to them over the weekend after an unexpected rush. Thieves strike once again at Bruckless Pier

Garda investigations are continuing after engines were stolen from two boats at Bruckless Pier last week. This is the third time in the space of ten months that outboard motors have been stolen from Bruckless Pier. Danny Ellison, the owner of the equipment, is asking any fishermen who may be approached to purchase the stolen engines to contact Gardai immediately. A grant application for the erection of CCTV at the pier was made earlier this year, on the grounds that such thefts were economically unsustainable and will drive local fishermen out of business; unfortunately, the application was turned down. In light of this latest outrage, Gerry O’Neill of O’Neill Electronics has undertaken to put CCTV up himself.

KEEPING KIDS ACTIVE WITH THE ENERGY HUB

Are you a model of fitness for your child? This weekend I was a presenter at Ireland’s leading health and fitness event, WellFest. The weekend saw over 8,000 visitors all keen to learn about different ways of keeping fit and healthy. This year, the event also focused on children (this is where I came in!) with a designated WellKids tent. With my RINKA team, we led over 300 children through fun-filled activities all weekend long. What struck me over the weekend was the number of parents bringing children along to the event, spending time together in the outdoors, having picnics and not a mobile phone in sight! It was really refreshing to meet so many parents taking active steps to protect their family’s health and well-being. The tides are turning and people are becoming aware of the necessity of proactive behaviours against childhood obesity. So I ask you, are you a model of fitness for your child? It’s much easier to motivate children to be active if you lead an active

Royal wedding fever has taken over... Prince Harry and Ms. Markle will walk down the aisle. Rightly or not we are fascinated... a combination of Royal magic... style and glamour. It’s how the other half live! However this wedding is very special in my books. A young man who has struggled in dealing with the death of his Mum and being in the public eye admitted to mental health challenges. He had turned that into a positive by embracing work on behalf of all those injured in wars and on active service. He is fast becoming a much admired hardworking young Prince. As for Ms. Markle... a high achiever in her own right. Long before her betrothal she was an accomplished actress and advocate for many causes. She has addressed the UN... no mean achievement! Let the begrudgers hold off... it’s a lovely story... it will be a lovely spectacle and they are two lovely young people. I for one wish them well and will invite them to visit Donegal one day! Italian Holiday Show to feature Sliabh Liag Paddy Byrne of Sliabh Liag Boat Trips will be featured in an upcoming episode of a leading Italian holiday show which will be on Italian TV station RAI Tre. Paddy is pictured with Annapia Chico and Diego Nicoletti who came to explore Donegal and filmed locations including the Slieve League Cliffs, Donegal Castle, Mount Errigal, Glenveagh National Park, Horn Head, Fanad Lighthouse and Malin Head. SCOTCH EYED AUGER: Probably on the market before the Brace and Bit, the working part was the same as the Brace bit but it had a long stem with a pipe like eye into which a wooden handle was put to form a tee. The auger was used in boat building as it was long and could bore deeper holes straighter. GIMLET: A small tool like a scotch auger but used in one hand as an awl to make a hole to start a wood screw. Wood screws then were not as sharp and self starting as they are now. Ford Fordson 10 CWT As used for deliveries in early days TOOLS Up until the mid seventies tradesmen generally had a very basic set of tools, the electric drill was the first electric tool to go from the workshop to the building site. Sawing, Planing, Boring and Nailing were all done with hand tools. PLANES: Wooden planes were still in use in the sixties but Stanley steel planes were becoming popular; Block, Smoothing, Jack, Jointing, Rebate, and Moulding were just some of the types. They are all still available but rarely used due to electric planes and routers. CARPENTERS’ BRACE & BITS: Used for boring holes in timber. It was available plain or ratchet. The ratchet one allowed one to bore holes in awkward places. The bits had a square tapered shank which is gripped in the brace chuck by two V shaped jaws. The bits had a tapered screw leader followed by two sharp cutting edges. Two patterns of bits were Irwin and Jennings, the Jennings having a closer, faster twist.

ADZE or FOOTAGE: Like an Axe except the blade was at right angles to the handle, more like a Pick. It was used for roughly shaping boat oars etc. SAWS: Disston saws made in America were regarded as the best on the market. Handsaws, Rip saws and Tenon saws were popular. Handsaws and rip saws had skew backs (a downward sweep in the back). Rip saws had chisel like teeth and were for cutting with the grain of the timber. Good quality tenon saws had a brass back (to keep the blade ridgid). They were used for cutting tenons and fine work. PLUMB BOB: A plumb bob is a heavy pointed conical weight which is suspended on a line and used to find a vertical line. It was used by decorators for hanging wallpaper and other applications. FARM FORGED SPADES: Originally farm spades were individually forged. There were different shapes of iron; straight and broken back were two of them. Tee handle and long straight shafted spades were used in different areas. McMahon spades

were forged in Limerick and popular with farmers. Farmers liked to pick through a number of spades to select one: this involved scraping it on a stone and listening to the ring of it. Maybe there was something to it, maybe not, but it kept them happy. GRAPPLE: This was a four pronged fork at right angles to a long straight handle, it was used for pulling clay sods out of deep drains. SCYTHES: Were used for cutting crops. Forged scythes were shaped from one piece of steel. The tang that attached it to the handle (known as a Snath) had to be adjusted by a blacksmith to get the correct cutting angle. This was known as hanging the scythe. Rivet back scythes, as the name suggests, had a blade riveted to a rib of steel, they were more easily damaged. A variety of snaths were available, They were made from ash timber, tubular steel and aluminium. They all had two handles attached. The common forged scythes were Waldron and the common rivet back brand was Tyzack. SCYTHE SHARPENING STONES: Were available in two types, Carborundum which was a blue manufactured stone, and quarried stones which were usually cream or brown in colour. There were stones quarried in Glenfarne, County Leitrim. Some scythes and stones are still available. POT MENDERS: Used for repairing leaks in containers, buckets, cans and saucepans etc. They consisted of two steel discs and a corkwood washer held together with a small bolt and nut. They were available in a variety of sizes.

It was smiles all round on Sunday as Donegal Town Community Band were crowned 2018 County Champions at the first major Marching Band Competition of the season. The competition was held at Moville Community College. The extra practice has paid off once again. Congratulations to all the young members of the band, majorettes and flag bearers the tutors and leaders who put so much time and effort into making sure the band are so well rehearsed and prepared. The next big competition for the Donegal Town Community Band will be at the Ulster Fleadh in Castlewellan, Co. Down on Sunday 29th of July.

Donegal on their way to the Ulster Quarter Final Donegal 2.20 Cavan 1.15 Donegal marched into the quarter-final of the Ulster Senior Football championship last Sunday after they cruised to victory against Cavan with a final score board of Donegal 2 goals and 20 points to Cavan 1 goal and 15 points. Declan Bonner's team got off to a slow start, but settled down in the second quarter to lead by 7 points at one stage. Before half time Cavan had that lead reduced to 4 points but the second half saw Donegal come flying back. However the result was never in doubt, with Bonner’s men the stronger team on the day and a late goal by Cian Mulligan put the final score on the board to secure the victory. The prestigious Cunard cruise ship MS Queen Victoria which is barely shorter than the new pier in Killybegs will dock at 9am on Sunday 20th May for the day. Cllr Niamh Kennedy commented that the number of passengers and crew will be twice the population of Killybegs. Many of the passengers will take trips to Sliabh Liag and other local attractions as well as the towns in the area including Donegal Town.

So let’s start at the beginning with a little history of Credit Unions and the history of Donegal Town Credit Union! The Irish Credit Union movement was founded as a result of the eﬀorts of three dynamic, pioneering people – Nora Herlihy, a teacher in Dublin; Sean Forde, an employee of Peter Kennedy Bakers, Dublin; and Séamus P. MacEoin, a Civil Servant working in Dublin. Having witnessed the abject poverty in 1950’s Dublin, they resolved to find a system that would allow people to gain more control over their finances.

What is a Credit Union?

A Credit Union is a group of people who save together and lend to each other at a fair and reasonable rate, we do not borrow externally from money markets so this is a consideration when setting rates and limits for each loan product. Each Credit Union is owned by the

Members, managed by the employees and monitored by the voluntary Board of Directors. In Ireland over 2.9 million members have recognised the value of Credit Unions and have savings approaching €11.9 billion. There are 9,200 active volunteers with over 3,500 employees nationwide. Credit unions adopt an approach that is familiar to most persons living in rural areas known as “Meitheal” which means a collective eﬀort for the greater good of the Community and this is our primary operating objective and ethos.

History of Donegal Town Credit Union

In 1965, as word filtered throughout Ireland of the work being done in Dublin, Donegal Town Development called a public meeting in the Court House in Donegal Town with the hopes of starting a Credit Union. Following two years of negotiation and training, a newly elected Board of Directors started the Credit Union in September 1967,

opening one evening a week. Following on 1968, they moved up the street to the old cinema (current Ulster Bank location) and opened after 11am Mass on Sundays. Continual growth saw the opening times expand to 3 nights a week, bearing in mind this was all managed by volunteers. In 1969, the first employee was engaged and the Board of Directors continued on with their plans to own a plot of land – several locations were since used until we found our present home at Miller’s Hill. Due to ongoing success, the Credit Union had outgrown its building on Tirchonaill Street and it was decided to construct a new premises for the Credit Union at Miller’s Hill. One year after ‘turning the sod’ on October 19th 2015, the doors of the state-of-the-art contemporary building opened for business. The new building is pictured above along with a picture of Manager Liam Kelly and Director Patrick Keeney in the building during construction. Over the next weeks, we will look at benefits of becoming a Member and also at GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation coming into eﬀect May 25th) and what it means for you the Member.

Leghowney Notes HOOLEY IN THE HALL Hooley in Leghowney Hall - Great Night for HOPE Foundation India Project Thanks so much to the Hooley in Leghowney Hall crew and all those who attended the Hooley last Wednesday night. 100 bags of rubbish were lifted over five hours. Sincere thanks to everyone who gave up their Sunday morning to come out and help - also to our drivers who kept everyone safe with warning lights and gathered all bags as they were filled. Dreadful what rubbish is dumped on our roadsides - some odd items included massive amounts of Red Bull cans, a teapot, wheels, doors, disposable gloves left at farm gates, wet wipes, bags of dumped cans and bottles, old signs, bits of clothing and God knows what else. There may be a few more Clean-Ups happening near you or maybe you could organise one yourself – many hands can do a lot in a few hours. A: It’s not such a good idea as some lettuces are bagged in an environmentally adjusted atmosphere and deteriorate quickly once the bag is opened. It’s always best to use fresh ingredients.

Home cooking with Sian SALAD DRESSINGS

This week we have a selection of home-made delicious fresh dressings. Much easier than you think, flavour is a hundred times better, no artificial additives and an end to half bottles of salad dressings clogging up the fridge. Dressing 1 - Fresh Lime – Simply roll a lime on the kitchen counter to release the juice, cut in half and squeeze the juice over a bowl of salad. Dressing 2 - Strangely this works, as I have used it often, especially when I have added fresh fruit to the salad such as strawberries, pears, etc. Use only topquality jam or preserve, preferably home-made. 3 tblsp Strawberry or raspberry jam (good quality) 1 tblsp vinegar (preferably cider or wine vinegar) 1 – 2 tblsp water or olive oil (for consistency) Method: Mix the jam and vinegar together, add water or olive oil to make a runny consistency. Add more liquid if too thick. Sieve the dressing to remove lumps and seeds. Serve with salad. Dressing 3 - Basic Vinaigrette - Oil is traditionally used in dressings as it sticks to the salad ingredients 3tblsp olive oil (or extra virgin olive oil, rapeseed, coconut) 1 tblsp vinegar (wine, sherry, cider, rice) Seasoning including freshly ground black pepper Variations - Add to above vinaigrette recipe: For a kick – 1tsp mustard paste, For tartness – replace ½ vinegar with 1 tblsp juice of 1 lemon and ½ zest lemon For sweetness – 1 -2 tsp honey Method: Simply place in a screw top bottle and shake. Taste and adjust as required. Keep refrigerated Low Fat Vinaigrette Dressings – the honey or maple syrup helps to adhere to the salad ingredients otherwise the dressings runs off and is better served separately to the salad. ½ cup fruit juice e.g. orange, apple ½ tblsp vinegar e.g. cider, wine, sherry 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional) Method: as above. Yoghurt Mint Dressing - Delicious when serving barbecue dishes or tikka chicken etc. with the salad 1 small carton full fat plain yoghurt 3 tblsp mint leaves (finely chopped) 1 tblsp lemon juice Salt and pepper Method: Simply stir all the ingredients together. Quick Yoghurt Mint (Jar) Dressing 1 small carton full fat plain yoghurt 2-3 tsp mint sauce. Method: as above. Gardening with Emer COTTAGE GARDEN DESIGN

I have already contradicted myself with this title as the essence of a cottage garden is its informal and natural look. It needs to appear as if it was in no way planned or designed and that these beautiful colourful plants just grew where they fancied! Ideally a cottage garden will include a generous mixture of herbaceous perennials, roses, self seeding annuals, climbers, herbs and fruit bushes. If you are not starting from scratch, you can incorporate a cottage garden style bed or border into an established garden. The layout of the bed or garden should have sweeping curves rather than straight edges and sharp corners. A good rich soil in a sunny position is ideal. The hard materials should also reflect the natural style of the cottage garden, for example irregular shaped stepping stones or locally sourced gravel could be used for winding pathways. Wooden benches can be placed among the planting to make them less of a feature. There are no rules for the planting schemes but a variety of heights, textures and flowering seasons will bring the most interest to the bed. The cottage garden should invite you to pick flowers for vases, harvest fruit for jams and tarts and to sit and enjoy the mosaic of colours, the sweet fragrances and the flavours of your chosen herbs and fruit. Hard luck to our U16’s who were beaten 3-1 by Donegal Town in the league playoff at Eany Park. The lads put up a great fight but lost out after conceding twice in extra time. They took the lead in the first half after a superb long range free kick from Nathan Maxwell beat Donegal keeper Shay Travers but the Town equalized shortly before half time through a Jordie Graham shot from the edge of the box. The second half was a tight affair with neither side managing to find the net and the tie went to extra time. With 4 minutes of the first half of extra time left Alex McAlmont put the Town ahead with a volley from just outside the box and with only two minutes of the second half remaining McAlmont struck again to make it 3-1 after Eany pushed for an equalizer. Well done to everyone on what was a very successful league campaign. Cup and Champions League to look forward to in August.

The Sunday Team signed off for the season with a 0-0 draw versus Rathmullan Celtic. Congratulations to Paul McHugh, Marty Byrne, Joe Rodden and all the players on a great season where they finished comfortably in mid table upon their return to the Premier Division. The future of the club is bright with so many promising young players coming to the fore this season. Well done to all. The senior presentation night takes place this Saturday evening in The Coach House getting underway around 9pm. Everyone welcome. The Saturday team booked their place in the Voodoo Venue Cup final on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Cup favourites Glencar Celtic. The mercurial David ‘Ted’ Bustard was the match winner heading home a pin point delivery from Gary Ward midway through the first half. The boys will face off against Cappry Rovers this Saturday in Convoy at 2pm. Best of luck to Rory Dunlevy, Marty Kelly and all the players. If anyone is free to travel over and support the players, it would be great to see as many as possible over to cheer on the lads. U16 – The U16 team put in a fantastic display last Thursday evening versus Eany Celtic in the U16 league playoff. Although they went one behind in the first half, Jordan Graham stepped up and riffled the ball into the corner of the net just before half time to level things up. The sides couldn’t be separated in the second half so the game went to extra time. Alex McAlmont was the hero in extra time, firstly scoring with a long range wonderstrike before sealing the victory with another goal with seconds remaining. A fantastic achievement from a great group of young players who have shown great determination and commitment all season. The management

team of Benny Byrne, Ciaran O’Reilly and Gary Ward were thrilled with the victory which was fully deserved over the course of the season. Well done lads. They team now have a few months off before reconvening for the Champions League in August. U14 – The U14’s played two games recently, firstly having a disappointing evening against Drumbar followed by a game versus Erne Wanderers on Monday evening. Next up is a home game versus St. Catherines this Saturday morning at 11am. U12 – Our U12 teams faced off against one another last week in a great game played in a very sporting manner. Both Donegal Town and Donegal/Killymard can be very proud of their performances with the Donegal Town outfit getting the better of things on this occasion. Next up for Donegal Town is a trip to Erne Youths while Donegal/Killymard host Erne Wanderers on Wednesday evening. Golf Classic - The club held its second Golf Classic in Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh last Friday. Despite poor weather conditions in the morning the Donegal Celtic Supporters Club team were triumphant in the day. The team consisted of Donnie McIntyre, John McHardy, Denis O’Donnell and Ed Markey. 2nd place went to The Laghey Construction team of Tom Geraghty, Noel McGinty, James McGonigle and Joseph Timoney while Paddy O’Reilly, Gerry Forde, Brian Boyle and Cookie Meehan finished in 3rd place. Who is Twisted Limbs & Crooked Branches?

For the last two weeks we have provided readers of the Eye on Donegal with a “Journey Back in Time” courtesy of “Twisted Limbs & Crooked Branches” - you may have been wondering who is behind these fascinating pieces of history. Colleen J Murdoch now lives in Ottawa in Canada and does historical research as “Twisted Limbs & Crooked Branches” and she has a website and Facebook page under that name. This is her biography: Genealogy: Looking For “Dead People”! My Journey Back In Time - Tracing my ancestors and researching the counties, cities and towns where they resided. Taking a “Glimpse” into their lives and stories and the times in which they lived; all in an effort to learn about their “Dash”! “I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning – to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the second with tears, but he said that what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.” I have always been interested in researching my family tree and “hanging out” in cemeteries. Like most of us... I didn’t ask enough questions when elderly family were still living. Oh, what I would give for 24 hours and a camera with my ancestors… just to sit and listen! I’m researching many family lines, including: Murdoch, Wilson, Berry, Love, Scott, Beattie/Beatty, Hendren, Sweeney, Robinson and Elvin; just to name a few. My families are predominantly from counties Antrim, Donegal and Derry/Londonderry. However, it seems that many of my family, both maternal and paternal lines “hailed” from Co. Donegal. I was born and raised in Northern Ireland and now live in Ottawa, Canada, making frequent trips back home to visit with my family. Of course those visits also include treks to the many burial grounds of my ancestors. My most recent trip back home was the summer of 2014.
