Liam Kennedy, Fanaghan, Inver met the love of his life, Sofie Gallagher, Mountcharles, when they both worked in Sheerin’s Londis, and last Saturday they married in the Sacred Heart Church, Mountcharles. After Mass they strolled down memory lane and went behind the counter in Sheerin’s to pull ice cream cones for their guests. Proprietor Anna Marie Sheerin told the Eye on Donegal that it all started at a Christmas staff night out at the Bluestack Centre in Drimarone, but the tell-tale signs of romance began before that. “Liam worked in the store upstairs and Sofie always insisted on going up to take down the stock; now I know what the long delay was when Sophie went up to restock!” Liam and Sofie flew home from Vancouver, where they have lived for the past five years, to be married in Mountcharles followed by a reception in the Blue Haven.

Incredibly this was the second love match made in Londis as Liam’s brother Sean Kennedy met his wife Helena Kerrigan there also while they both worked in the shop. Now that the word is out Seamus and Anna Marie Sheerin will no doubt be inundated with job applications from all those single people looking for love in the parish of Inver!

Well what an event, what a crowd and what sunshine. The Fingal organisers of this year’s Irish Orienteering Championships were bowled over with the welcome and the facilities at Leghowney Community Hall. The competition had 350 entries from all over Ireland, Europe and even Russia; these were accompanied by friends and family, all were catered for from the Hall kitchen with soup, stew, tea/coffee, Leghowney Country Market scones and fresh bakes all day. Very well done to all who helped with the planning of this exciting event and who worked so hard all day to keep the whole event running so smoothly and successfully. Funding for Home Adaptations

The Fair in Frosses

Just over €1 million has been allocated to County Donegal in funding for Housing Adaptations as part of a national package of €66.25 million announced by Housing Minister Damien English last week. The Housing Adaptation Grant is intended to help people make changes and adaptations to their home, e.g. making it wheelchair-accessible, adding a stair-lift or adding a ground-floor bathroom. The grant will facilitate changes needed to make homes suitable for a person with a physical or other disability and to enable older people and people with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes for longer and also to facilitate an earlier return from hospital.

Admission is €5 and €10 for family.

Frosses Fair Day will be held on Sunday 3rd of June at Frosses Hall from 2-5pm.

On Thursday 17th May the MS Silver Cloud will arrive in Killybegs at 9am and depart at 1pm. It will have a crew of 185 and 296 passengers, mostly British and American. head usually on self tapping screws. Dome Heads = a countersunk screw with a small threaded hole in the centre of the head into which a separate dome head can be screwed. RAWLPLUGS: Rawlplugs were made from brown fibre in sizes to match screw sizes and hole sizes.

A more recent photo of the shop IRONMONGERY PLATE LOCK: Plate lock was a large surface fitted dead lock with a large centre warded key. There were skeleton keys available ( keys with the centre cut away ). This was one of the few types of lock that skeleton keys were available for. Earlier versions of this type of lock were wooden cased and had steel works, often seen in old buildings. DOUBLE HANDED LOCK : This is a lock that can be fitted on a right or left hand hung door. It has a keyhole that you can put the key in either way up. IRON HOLD FAST: This is a square pointed steel pin with a flat lug welded on top. It was used for securing timber, door frames etc. It was usually driven into the joint between stones and there was a hole in the lug so you could put a nail in to secure the timber. WOOD SCREWS: Screws were usually made by Irish Wire Products ( IWP). They were cross head (used a flat screwdriver). They were sized in wire gauged sizes No 4-6-8-10-12-14. A No. 8 would be equal to a 4mm in the present range. The following types of screw heads (still available) but not often referred to: CSK = Countersunk which is the common one, RSD = countersunk with a rounded top, Round Head = half round head with square shoulders (no countersink), Pan head = a raised flat type

RAWL TOOL: This was a hand punch for making holes in masonry for rawlplugs. It consisted of a handle and bits in a range of sizes matching rawlplug sizes. The bits were held in the handle by a tapered drift and needed a taper known as an ejector to remove in order to change sizes. The hole was made by turning the punch each time you struck it with the hammer. This was the tool used prior to hammer drills. CUT NAILS: Nails that were stamped or cut from a sheet of steel. They were used for making doors and putting down floor boards. DRIVE SCREWS: A twisted galvinised dome head nail usually used with a lead washer for fastening corrugated roof sheeting prior to the springhead nail being used. BIFURCATED RIVETS: A brass or copper coloured split rivet used to join two pieces of leather etc. It was put through a hole in the two pieces, then the split tails were spread and flattened. They were used for Belts, Harness, Schoolbags etc. CORRUGATED FASTENER: A sharp wavy piece of blue steel used to join boards edge to edge when driven across the grain. It was shaped to tighten the two boards together, used in making boxes etc. HORSE SHOES: Sold in sets of four in sizes ranging from four to seven inches. Each set has two pointed shoes for the hind hoofs and two rounded shoes for the front hoofs. The big seven inch shoes were usually for Clydesdale horses sometimes used for dragging logs out of the forest. Mordox studs were usually used in shoes for horses travelling on the road to avoid slipping especially on ice.

PAINTS SNOWCEM: Used for painting outside walls prior to exterior emulsions coming on the market. Snowcem came in powder form in 7, 14 and 56 pound drums. It had to be mixed with water first to a paste and then thinned out. Colours available were white, cream, mid cream, pale grey and slate. It was made by Blue Circle. READY MIXED OIL PAINT: This was on the market before the gloss paint of today. It was called ready mixed oil paint because prior to it coming on the market painters had to mix their own paints from powder colours, oils and turps. Shandon and Bird were two brands of oil paint made by Harrington Goodlass & Wall in Cork, now the Dulux factory. Paint brands no longer in existence were Duradio made by Walpamur Co., later taken over by Crown paints. Robalac was also a brand. Hadfields was made by Preston & Hadfields. There was a brown fox on the tin. DISTEMPER: Known as oil bound Distemper, it was used on inside walls prior to emulsions coming on the market. The common brands were Walpamur & Halls. PAINT TIN SIZES: Paint tins were sized in pounds up to the sixties, then it changed to Imperial measure: Pints, Quarts & Gallons and now Litres. Example - Two pound tin = One Pint = 500ml approx. LEADS: White Lead came in grey steel drums and was ground in oil like thin putty. It had to be further thinned with Linseed Oil and Turpentine. Orange lead came in powder form and had to be mixed with Linseed Oil and Turpentine. Leads were very good primers for both wood and iron. They were poisonous if licked by animals for example. LINSEED OIL: Boiled Linseed Oil was used in coloured paints and raw linseed had to be used in white paints as boiled would cream the white. Raw Linseed Oil slows the drying properties of paints. Boiled oil is used to treat the skin of Bodhrans.

SIAN’S DIP IN DIP OUT SALAD BOWL Following on from last week’s ‘ready to go salad’ this is an excellent way of getting and giving your nearest and dearest their 3 a day. Top it up with extra veggies and fruit such as grated carrots, sliced peppers, beetroot, radishes, grapes, apple, orange etc easily making it 5 a day. By adding a different protein, carbs and a dressing each day, Summer meals sorted. This salad will last up to 7 days when stored as instructed but from experience you’ll be making a fresh batch well before the week is up. Basic Ingredients • 1 Lettuce e.g. Little Gem, Romaine, Butterhead (not Iceberg) • 1 Pk Baby Tomatoes e.g. Piccolo. • 1 Cucumber • 1 Bunch Spring Onions Equipment • Large plastic or glass bowl with air tight lid. • 4 pieces good quality absorbent kitchen paper Method 1. Wet 2 pieces of kitchen paper, squeeze out most of the water. Leave damp. Spread out the paper and place in the base of the airtight bowl/container 2. Wash all vegetables by immersing in salted water for a few minutes. Drain, rinse quickly and dry the vegetables between two very clean tea towels or kitchen paper. A salad spinner can be used to dry lettuce. 3. Roll up the lettuce leaves and shred 1cm apart, place in the bowl / container. 4. Cut the tomatoes in half, (if using large tomatoes, cut in half, scrape out the inside and dry, then dice roughly, not too small). Place in container. 5. Top and tail the spring onions and slice the remains at an angle (for presentation, no other reason). Place in container. 6. Cut the top and bottom off the cucumber, slice in half-length ways, scoop out all the seeds and water from each half, using a teaspoon or dessert spoon. Dice roughly. Place in container. 7. Wet the remaining two pieces of kitchen paper, squeeze out some of the water, spread out the paper and lay it over the salad ingredients. 8. Store in the fridge for up to 7 days. Dip in and dip out as required. Always making sure to keep the kitchen paper over the salad. 9. Add extra washed salad ingredients and fruit to plated dip in dip out salad as some of the ingredients e.g. grated carrots go off much quicker. 10. Protein and carb suggestions, quiche, boiled eggs, ham, spicy chicken goujons, grilled salmon, smoked mackerel, fish cakes, falafels, vegetarian burgers, lasagne, curried cous cous, boiled baby potatoes, mac’n’cheese, to name but a few. ENCOURAGE WILDLIFE TO YOUR GARDEN

There is nothing more peaceful than sitting outside listening to the birds sing, watching the busy bees collecting nectar and hoping that the brightly coloured butterfly will settle a few seconds so you can get a good look at it. Encouraging wildlife will bring greater diversity to even the smallest garden. The addition of a water source, whether it be a bird bath or small pond is essential for attracting lots of beneficial visitors. You will be amazed how quickly the birds will use it to clean their feathers, the frogspawn will appear and it will be a hive of activity with butterflies, beetles and many others. Carefully placed nesting boxes, bee hotels, large stones and logs will give beneficial wildlife places to nest and feast. Successions of flowering plants with simple flowers are the best for attracting pollinators, which are essential for a plant’s fruit and seed production. Such plants include Alyssum, Cosmos, Marigold, Lemon Balm, Fennel and Borage. Native trees and flowers are also great for local wildlife so you have a good excuse to leave the odd weed here and there! Most importantly, avoid using general pesticides as these will kill off the good insects too. Once you have encouraged the natural predators to your garden you won’t have to worry about an attack of aphids as your ladybird friends will quickly find them and keep them under control. The slugs and snails will be enjoyed by the song thrush and frogs during the day and by the hedgehog at night. Evening extension to Local Link service A new state-subsidised bus service to transport rural residents to and from social events is to be piloted in Donegal this summer. Locally the service will run from Glencolmcille to Donegal Town. The new evening bus service will also operate in eighteen other counties and will mostly operate on weekends between the hours of 6pm and 11pm. Transport Minister, Shane Ross confirmed fifty extended Local Link bus routes across the country will be rolled out which will help alleviate rural isolation. As part of the scheme these extended runs will be in operation from June until December on a trial basis at an estimated cost of €450,000 nationally.

The Donegal County Museum is bringing the large scale “REMEMBERING WORLD WAR ONE – THE DONEGAL STORY” exhibition to the Dolmen Centre at Kilclooney in Portnoo. The exhibition will be running from Thursday, 10th of May to Friday 18th May and the museum are promoting it as part of the Bealtaine festival. Displays are open from 9am to 4pm and 7pm to 10pm daily (closed weekends). It is expected that there will be a great expression of interest as we are currently in the 100th year from the historical event. Caroline Carr from the museum is to give a talk ‘COUNTY DONEGAL AND WORLD WAR ONE’ on Thursday 10th May at 8pm. On the final evening, there will be a CONCERT with local school children who will sing World War One songs under the guidance of Sara Laughlin and the local primary school will recite poetry from this era. Gerry Moore (History Teacher) in Glenties Comprehensive School will give a talk on local participants in the war as he has brought groups of students to France as part of the ‘Adopt a Soldier’ project.

It was in Rome, towards the end of the eighteenth century, one fine evening in May. The Month of Mary was founded. “This is the month in which, in the churches and individual homes, the most affectionate and fervent homage of prayers and devotions from the hearts of Christians are raised to Mary. It is also the month in which from his throne descend upon us the most generous and abundant gifts of the Divine Mercy.” In our own times, we Catholics, wanting to be close to her always, offer her special presents in May: pilgrimages, visits to churches dedicated to her, little sacrifices in her honour, periods of study and wellfinished work offered up to her, and a more attentive recitation of the rosary. Sunshine and Blue Skies for Irish Orienteering Championships 2018 in Donegal

Leghowney Hall was the base for day one of the Irish Orienteering Championships 2018. The course for day one brought the competitors up over the hills of Barnes. This is the first time the Championships have been held in Donegal with 350 participants and the highest number of entries from outside of Ireland in the competitionâ€™s history. Leghowney Hall was a hive of activity from early on Saturday morning with the traffic management under pressure from 11 o'clock with campers, cars and buses on the move all day. The competition was organised by Fingal Orienteers Dublin who made The Bluestack Centre in Drimarone their base for the weekend. The huge crowds which converged at Leghowney were fed and watered all day by a very busy Hall Committee and Leghowney Country Market members. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase what a fantastic facility is available at Leghowney and the stunning natural beauty of the area. The community was highly commended by the organisers and competitors for the wonderful hospitality and professional approach given the huge numbers. The competition moved over to Townawilly, Lough Eske on Sunday where the competitors got a glimpse of Lough Eske under blue skies. The final dayâ€™s event took place on Bank Holiday Monday at Finner, Bundoran.

DBCC riders in Tour of Ulster STAGE 1 It was a tough day at the office for the Donegal Bay team on stage one of the Tour of Ulster. It was a long stage of 190k around Lough Neagh. Early on a group of 26 sneaked off the front going around a roundabout and the chase was on. Then the trouble started.

Marc Potts had a mechanical and whilst chasing back on had a mishap that saw him off the bike again. By the time he was back on the bike, he had a long chase back. As his pursuit was underway, another Donegal Bay jersey was spotted on the side of the road. Paul McCarter had damaged his bicycle frame hitting a pothole and was forced to abandon. Meanwhile as Marc was trying to get back to the main bunch, several

attacks were sparking off the front with Darragh McCarter getting away in the main chase. They were slowly closing back up to the leaders, but traffic congestion in a village killed their momentum and the enthusiasm for the chase ebbed away. Darragh came home in the second group with Marc, Aaron McBride and Caolem McCarter finishing in the main bunch. STAGE 2 Stage 2 was another tough stage with seven categorised climbs taking in the Mourne mountains. Once again, the race was on from the gun and the field was split all over the place. After his mishaps yesterday, Marc Potts was the first Donegal Bay rider over the line in 24th place. Aaron finished in what was left of the main bunch, a group that Darragh was also in before a mechanical saw him finish in a small group further behind. Caolem was still hanging in there in a top class field. STAGE 3 The final stage proved to be another super fast one with 24 riders not making it to the finish including our own Caolem McCarter. The other three lads made it home to round out a tough weekend of racing. In the overall they finished: Marc Potts 41st, Darragh McCarter 52nd, Aaron McBride 57th.

The club hosted a very successful U8 blitz on Saturday last, teams from Naomh Múire and Na Rossa took part. Despite an impressive performance from Jack Hegarty, who scored 7-3, the U12 team went down to a strong Killybegs team, on a scoreline of 11-6 to 8-4. There was no winner of the Royal Flush Jackpot. The numbers Drawn were: 8, 10, 16 and 22. Consolation prizes went to: Conor McShane, Kilcar; John Duddy, Corkermore; and Mary McNern, Castleview. Jackpot next week: €3,440. Royal Flush tickets can be bought in Floyd’s and Baskin’s Café. Bingo in clubhouse every Friday night at 9pm. Both Senior and Reserve teams are at home to Naomh Bríd on Saturday next.

The standard was super high with all the top names in Ireland as well as teams from England and France. A combination of missing the big break and bad luck on Stage One took the lads out of contention, but they battled hard all weekend. This will set them up nicely for the upcoming races.

DBCC Summer League Round 1 Results There was an excellent turn-out of 30 for the first round of the 2018 Summer League on May 3rd, though it felt more like winter well done to all who braved the less than ideal weather conditions. As always, they started with a 10mile TT on the Barnesmore circuit, there was a strong headwind into town with a nice tailwind to push the riders back to the finish. Darragh McCarter (Donegal Bay) was fastest on the night with a 21.42, followed home by Johnny Kane (Foyle) 22.37, and Paul Keogh (Yeats CC) 23.10. The category winners were: 1st Unplaced M40: Peter McGee (Tir Chonaill); 1st Unplaced M50: Kevin McCrossan (Four Masters); M60 Pat Dunnion (Finn Wh); M70 Terry McIntyre (Donegal Bay); Junior Oisin Doherty (Donegal Bay). Thanks to the marshals who stood out on a chilly night. Next will be a return to the Laghey/Ballintra circuit for a Road Race.

AVS sports news Athletics On Friday 4th May the team travelled to the Antrim Forum for the Ulsters E District. The students were exceptional on the day; congratulations to Rachel Gallagher who came first and Niamh Moohan who placed 2nd in the 75m Hurdles. Savannah Timony also won bronze in the 1500m. It was an excellent achievement by the three students and it promotes and encourages others to participate in track and field athletics and cross country running in secondary schools. We encourage students to attend training and it continues every Tuesday after school for all age groups. Cross country training is on Fridays at lunch time. The local primary school athletics

EYE on SPORT competition takes place on 11th May on the school track. This has been very successful in previous years. This event caters for over 800 students from local schools, it will be organised by the TY Sports Leaders and it is run in conjunction with Tir Chonaill A.C. All schools should have received information, if not contact Eamon Harvey or the school office. Active Schools Sports Day is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 22nd May weather permitting. The students are guaranteed a full filled day with events taking place such as spud and spoon, sack race and more challenging events like the shot putt.

U16 play their first Championship game Tuesday at home v Naomh Colmcille at 7.30pm. Our U12s were unfortunate to lose to Naomh Bríd on Friday but now face Bundoran at home, this Friday at 7pm. Our U14s won against Bundoran last Wednesday in their first league game, well done to all. Four Masters Notes Ladies - Four Masters senior ladies met a very experienced skillful Buncrana side in the first leg of the preliminary round of Intermediate Championship. Four Masters contested until the end but Buncrana was by far the stronger side. Five of the starting fifteen were unavailable but will be playing next Sunday when Buncrana travel to Donegal Town. Kick off 11.30am.

On a positive note it was a terrific boost to the squad to see Kate Keaney return from a long injury. Her presence for the last twenty minutes was clearly felt and hopefully she will extend playing time next week. Well done to all players who never gave up and fought until the end. A proud performance! Under 12 Girls - Four Masters U12 girls continued their winning streak in sunny Glencolmcille on Saturday. We travelled with a smaller squad than normal due to First Holy Communions being held. After winning the toss our captain for the day – Kenya opted to play with the wind – which was swirling around the Naomh Columba pitch. This proved a vital decision as we opened up a good lead scoring 5 goals in the first half – going into the half time break with a 9 point lead. Playing the second half against a stiff breeze, we saw our lead being rapidly clawed back with the Glen girls scoring some lovely points and goals. Our young ladies dug deep and in a great team move – Jessica found the back of the net in the dying minutes to earn us a 3 point win, 6-1 to 3-7. Well done girls on a great performance in difficult conditions. Underage Boys - Well done to underage players Richard O’Rourke and Shay Travers who were part of the Donegal U16’s Buncrana Cup winning squad this week.

Donegal beat Tyrone on a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-12 in a great contest. Pauric Harvey was also involved with the backroom team. Richard started corner back, putting in a terrific performance against a good Tyrone forward line. Well done lads. Bruckless Boat Club

Bruckless Boat Club held their annual Rowathon on Sunday, 6th May, from 12pm to 6pm. They set up shop under a canopy, outside Mac’s Bar in Dunkineely, on what was the hottest day anybody had experienced for years. There were several competitions throughout the day, with a cash prize of €200 going to the team that could row the farthest distance in eight minutes. The prize went to Danny Ryan’s team from ‘Box Fit’ in Letterkenny; he, Michael O’Hara, Bernard Doohan and John Doohan rowed an impressive 2,649 meters in 8 minutes! Congratulations also go to members of Loughros Point Rowing Club on winning the 1,000m male/female challenge. They were Patrick Boomer, with a time of 2.55 and Aeva Andersson with a time of 3.58. Bruckless Boat Club would like to thank everybody for their support, on what was a brilliant day, with a special thank you to Damien, for providing the venue.

Congratulations to Jack Keaney on scoring his first senior goal for Sligo Rovers in their win over Bray by 2-1 recently with the Donegal man heading the first goal into the net after 32 minutes. Jack is a son of Paddy Keeney and Deirdre Dillon.

Donegal Town F.C. Notes

The Saturday Team are back in action this weekend taking on Glencar Celtic in the Voodoo Venue Cup semi-final. The game is to be played in Rathmullan with the action getting underway at 1.30pm. The Sunday Team finish off their season this weekend with a home game versus Rathmullan Celtic. Paul McHugh’s side ensured Premier Division football for next season last weekend when an Eoin Slevin goal earned a point versus Kilmacrennan Celtic. Action on Sunday gets underway at the Hospital Field at the usual time of 2pm. U16 – The U16 team had a disappointing evening last Saturday in Eany going down to a 3-2 defeat. Goals from Senan Quinn and Alex McAlmont were not enough to get the point required for the league title. The league is now set for a playoff match versus Eany in Eany on Thursday evening getting underway at 6.30pm. Best of luck to Benny Byrne and all his players. All support on the evening would be greatly appreciated.

U14 – The U14’s have had a quiet few weeks but are back in action this week when they travel to play Drumbar United on Thursday evening at 7pm. Training continues every Monday evening at the Astro from 6-7.15pm. U12 – We have a very interesting game in store for both our under 12 teams this Wednesday as they face off against each other in the league. It is encouraging to see so many players representing the club at this level. Golf Classic – We are currently putting the final touches in place for our Golf Classic in Donegal Golf Club on Friday 11th May, kindly sponsored by The Kelly Group. A Journey Back in Time

Reminiscences of Killybegs “Sir – May I request the use of your columns to trace upon them a few reminiscences of a short tour I enjoyed some winters ago to Killybegs.

At Killybegs all is the architecture of nature, and the rocks are shaped as they had turrets been in mockery of man’s art, and the mountains of Cronard and Slieveleag are to be seen towering aloft, ‘Soaring to the sky in all the wild pomp of mountain majesty’. The morning to which I allude was beautifully ﬁne, and the bay literally studded over with all kinds of craft — the fouroared galley plying against the current river — the heavy lug boat standing idly with its sail ﬂoating in the breeze — the open

sailing boat looking on whilst her cargo was gradually diminishing — the broad and expansive bay with its ships at anchor on the roads — the burst of sunshine shedding its splendour, and beautifully deﬁning in rich and sombre tints the alternations of light and shade — the blue mountains of Benbulben sparkling towards the west — the villages of Carntullagh and Townsligo contributing to the scenery — Carricknagore, with its romantic cliffs, and the craggy ramparts of Benroe, the riddlings of creation — the two light houses of St. John’s Point and the Rutten Island, directing to the safest harbour, and the best bay of Ireland ships of every tonnage at every state and offering them the best anchorage of the tide.
