Donegal “Rose of Tralee” Event in the Central Hotel, Donegal Town, Saturday 21st April

This Saturday, 21st April, in the Central Hotel the culmination of a selection process for the County Donegal “Rose of Tralee 2018” will take place at a gala event. Speaking to the Eye on Donegal this week, Elaine McInaw, the County Donegal Selection Organiser, revealed the 13 girls (pictured below) who have made it through to the final stage of the County process. On Saturday they will all go through individual and group interviews with experienced judges before the public event which commences at 8pm. Lee Gooch from Highland Radio will once again be the MC and interviewer and a great evening’s

entertainment is promised. Now in her 8th year as the selection organiser, Elaine spoke about the great camaraderie and genuine friendships which develop between the girls and also about the tremendous support she gets from previous Donegal Roses. The chosen Rose who will go forward to the world famous festival in Tralee will be the Donegal Rose for the year. The festival takes place from 16th-23rd August. Every county in Ireland will send a Rose to join the 33 other Roses from around the world. During the week of the festival, these 65 Roses will be interviewed and 32 will be

selected for the television broadcast. Twelve Roses will be chosen from Ireland with at least two from each province. Twenty Roses will be chosen from around the world to appear on the TV show which takes place over two nights on RTE 1 from the “Festival Dome” in Tralee. The Rose of Tralee will serve as an ambassador for the year and, in addition to many events all over Ireland, will visit all of the Rose of Tralee “Centres” around the world during her tenure. Some tickets for the gala event are still available from Abbey and Central Hotels at a cost of €15.

Top International Buyers Set Sights on Donegal ahead of Major Trade Fair

Top international buyers toured the Wild Atlantic Way ahead of attending the country’s most influential travel event Tourism buyers from 23 countries, including key markets like GB, the US and Mainland Europe, have undertaken several fact-finding tours across Ireland this weekend, ahead of attending Meitheal, Ireland’s largest tourism trade fair. Meitheal 2018 took place in Citywest Hotel in Dublin this week, and was organised by Fáilte Ireland, the national tourism development authority, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland. During their tour of Donegal, the buyers enjoyed a visit to Glenveagh Castle in the Glenveagh National Park, Irish coffee demonstration and a traditional music

session at Leo’s Tavern, at Burtonport Harbour they headed to Arranmore Island to enjoy a cookery demonstration and tasting at Muldowney’s B&B, followed back on mainland with a visit to the Donegal Design Makers in Ardara and a trip via the Glen Gesh Pass to Sliabh Liag Distillery and the visitor centre at Sliabh Liag. Bespoke itineraries for the fact-finding tours were designed by Fáilte Ireland to give the overseas buyers a first-hand experience of what their clients can expect to see and do while in Ireland with a key focus on the tourism development authority’s destination brands – the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s

Ancient East and Dublin. Speaking about the importance of these trips, Fáilte Ireland’s Director of Marketing, Niall Tracey emphasised: “With world-class scenery, hospitality, activities, attractions, culture, heritage and food, it is little wonder that tourists from every corner of the globe set their sights on Ireland. Travel Conference Brings Top Canadian Writers to Donegal

Fáilte Ireland hosted international journalists to boost Ireland’s Canadian media coverage ahead of new flights between Ireland and Canada this summer Fáilte Ireland hosted 28 members of The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) Canada Chapter last week, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland. Representing Lonely Planet, Air Canada Vacations, Fodor’s and other publications these are some of the most influential writers in the Canadian travel industry. Among the many places showcased to the group on their visit to the Wild Atlantic Way were Ireland’s highest sea cliffs at Slieve League, Glencolmcille Folk Village and Glenveagh National Park. They also visited Lisadell House in Sligo, and Kylemore Abbey in County Galway. With Air Canada due to launch new seasonal non-stop flights and increased frequencies of existing services between Canada and Ireland this summer, a number of tailored press trips have been organised by Fáilte Ireland to encourage the members

to get out to experience and explore Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way and in Ireland’s Ancient East, giving delegates a taste of what the island of Ireland has to offer to Canadian tourists. Tips for discouraging sugary snacks When children are asking for sugary treats and snacks it can be hard to say no, but it is so important that these types of foods are limited and given only as a treat. Foods that are high in added sugar tend to also be high in calories and low in other valuable nutrients. As a result, a highsugar diet is often linked with obesity. Eating too many sugary foods also can lead to tooth decay, energy lows, poor sleeping patterns and anxiety problems in young children. Foods and drinks to watch out for include fizzy drinks, biscuits, cake, sweets, chocolate, yoghurts, and some fruit drinks. Look out for hidden sugars and take the time to read the labels.

Here are some great tips to help control the sugar in your child’s diet: • Offer alternatives and make your children feel like they’re choosing • Don’t buy treats so they are not in the house • Defer or delay giving it to them (not until you clean your room or not until Friday) • Give them smaller portions (half a bag of crisps in a bowl rather than a whole portion out of the pack) • Have defined treat days/times, for example, only on Fridays or at the weekend or only after their activity or after school

TIDY TOWNS ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN UP IN DONEGAL TOWN The National Tidy Towns competition is celebrating its 60th birthday in 2018. Glenties in County Donegal were the first national winners of the competition. Donegal Town Tidy Towns Committee was formed in 2003 and in its first year of entry was delighted to receive 200 points. have increased our marks every year since 2003 to 298 marks in 2017. During the year The Donegal Town Tidy Towns rural social scheme workers continue ongoing maintenance around the town with weekly litter picking, maintaining the Bank Walk, the Playground, Famine Graveyard and

Urgent Review of Postal Voting Required

The Irish postal voting system is outdated and archaic, according to Pat the Cope Gallagher TD. Unlike numerous other countries in Europe the Irish system does not currently permit voting for those who may be abroad on polling day on holidays, pilgrimage or work related matters. Similarly any Irish students who are attending English colleges are not entitled to a postal vote at present. Deputy Gallagher feels that the Irish system of postal voting is far too restrictive and does not cater for modern day living where some individuals may work abroad during the week and return home at weekends. “It is baffling how our system of postal voting has not changed with time and progress of modern day living,” he said. Pat the Cope continued, “Many European countries allow for early voting for those who will be abroad on business, work related matters or holidays and this would also apply to students. “In the forthcoming referendum hundreds if not thousands will be deprived of their voting rights because they happen to be abroad on their annual holiday, or work or studying, furthermore the proposed referendum day of the 25th of May coincides with the annual Raphoe Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes. This alone will possibily deprive 300 people of their right to vote due to the narrow and out of date postal voting system we have at present in our country.” Pat the Cope stated that no reform has occurred in over 30 years and our society has changed utterly in that time. He is calling on the Government to look actively at other voting models in European countries and to introduce the necessary changes here in the Irish system. “These anomalies can easily be corrected if there is sufficient goodwill on the part of the Government,” he concluded.

Home cooking with Sian CHICKEN BROTH It’s been a long cold Winter. Where would we be without the comfort of a good hot meal. So just before the weather changes for the better, a serving of home made delicious chicken broth is both welcome and worth the effort. And with chickens from €3 each in selected Irish supermarkets this week, good nutrition comes cheap. There are several ways to make chicken broth. But remember this is slow cooking, you can’t rush a good broth. Ingredients 1.5 kilo Chicken (small) 2-4 stalks Celery 2 Carrots 2 Onions Seasoning or/and Chicken Stock Cube 2 Bay leaves or a bouquet garni (great for adding flavour but optional) 500g Mixed Chopped Vegetables, fresh or frozen (just as nutritious and tasty unless you grow your own.) Method 1 Poach the whole chicken in water with the celery, carrots, onions (leave skins on to colour stock), bay leaves, bouquet garni and stock cube. Bring to boil, turn down and simmer for approximately 1.5 hours and make sure the water doesn’t dry. Skim off any white residue from time to time. Remove the chicken from the pot. The chicken meat will slide off the bone, shred with two forks or dice in fairly large lumps. Sieve the liquid into a clean saucepan. Discard the bones and vegetables as these will be too mushy and will have little nutritional value at this stage. Instead, add the fresh or frozen vegetables to the nutritious stock, season and simmer gently for a further 20 minutes. Add the chicken, simmer for ten minutes. Taste and season. Serve in bowls with crusty bread or ladle on top of some hot pasta. Method 2 (Sunday Dinner Method) Roast the chicken as you would for Sunday dinner. Remove all the chicken (and skin if you are counting calories). Use ½ or more of the chicken meat for Sunday dinner and dice the rest roughly for the broth. Make the stock whilst the chicken carcass is still hot. Cover the carcass with cold water. Add some vegetables and simmer for 20-30minutes. Sieve the stock into a fresh saucepan. Continue from Stage 8 above. Taste at this stage, you may need to add some chicken stock cubes or reduce the liquid by boiling rapidly to concentrate the flavour. Make sure that the chicken is re-heated thoroughly. She taught home economics for 25 years and now runs Donegal Cookery School at Donegal Manor. New Car Park for Upper Main Street At the recent Donegal Municipal District meeting Roads Engineer Mark Sweeney told the members that as soon as the work on the new footpath on the Sligo Road towards Magherabeg was finished he expects work to commence on the demolition of the old

Fire Station on Upper Main Street. Once this has been completed work will begin on making this area into a full car park which it is hoped will aid in the alleviation of some of the parking issues in Donegal Town.

Many of us are guilty of only spending time in our gardens when there is work to be done. We unconsciously search out the weeds that need picking, the gap in the hedge that needs filled and the slugs that we have a never-ending war with. Organising the furniture and other accessories in an asymmetrical form will create a more casual atmosphere. Before buying new furniture measure your area and remember to allow for space to walk around it while it is being used. No new Schools for Donegal

The Department of Education building plan for 2019-2022 includes no Donegal schools. A number of schools throughout the county are awaiting approval for construction, while other schools are waiting to get to the building process. The plan announced last week includes 42 new schools over the next 4 years (26 new primary schools and 16 post‑primary schools). Pat the Cope Gallagher T.D. has called on the Minister to favourably consider all Donegal school applications under the Summer Works Scheme, Emergency Works Scheme and Minor Works Scheme, in order that these schools are maintained until such time as further Capital works can be approved. Schools such as the Abbey Vocational School, Dunkineely NS and others require extensions due to capacity issues or due to the fact that the school buildings are deteriorating rapidly and require upgrading or renewal in order to be fit for purpose, he said.

There will be up to 620 passengers on board, mainly German and British, and the cruise ship has a crew of 278.

Harvey’s Point opens new Garden Suite

Brian and Kathleen McDaid toast Jody. Last Thursday evening the Mayor of Donegal Town, Pauric Kennedy, cut the tape along with Deirdre and Marc Gysling to officially open the stunning new suite. Guests were greeted by a champagne reception followed by a scrumptious buffet and lots of fine wine while Andrew Monk entertained. General Manager Noel Cunningham welcomed everybody and Deirdre gave us all a laugh telling of how her staff bedroom when she started working in Harvey’s many years ago was where the suite is now built. “Marc’s room was a few doors up and he occasionally knocked on my door to borrow my toothpaste,” she laughed.

Deirdre told the guests that the Garden suite was Jody’s brainwave which started as a small plan but grew into this magnificent suite. The €1.5 million investment comprises a conference centre catering for up to 220 people and has state of the art facilities including a very attractive modern bar. Spring into Story-time is a huge hit

Spring into Story-time is a Libraries Ireland initiative running during the month of April. 12 libraries across Donegal are delivering specific sessions aimed at preschoolers and their families to reinforce the importance of reading at home. All events are free of charge, and no booking is required. Donna Cavanagh, Senior Executive Librarian said “This is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the joy of reading. The sessions are interactive, fun and informative, and our staff share hints and tips with parents to help their children develop a love of reading.” Members can avail of up to 12 books at a time for 3 weeks at a time. Children often love to read the same story over and over, and libraries can facilitate an extension so parents can ensure their young ones get to read their favourite book. CHURCH OF IRELAND Weekly services are held in St Peter’s Church, Killaghtee on Sundays at 10.45am. SYMPATHY Catherine Dobbyn passed away peacefully at Killybegs Community Hospital on 5th April. Catherine was a regular worshipper on a Sunday morning in St Peter’s and we will miss her presence in her pew. She served many years on the select vestry and was involved in fundraising down through the years. She always kept a keen interest in parish life up until her passing. Her family and faith were an important part of her everyday life. Our deepest sympathy is extended to David, Roberta, grandchildren Shaun, Jason and Alisha, her daughters Suzette, Linda, Joan, niece Jennifer Mackey and the extended family circle. Shelia Deane and her family mourn the loss of her brother Ben. Our heartfelt sympathy for their loss goes out to them. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Emma Tinney and Tom Brideland who were married in St Peters on Monday 9th April. Emma is a daughter of Heather Deane and a granddaughter of Sadie Deane. Good News for Cleary Centre

Cllr. Michael Naughton has advised the Eye on Donegal that funding has been approved for the Cleary Centre in Donegal Town and the works should be out to tender before the end of 2018.

Roads Engineer Mark Sweeney, speaking at the recent Donegal Municipal District meeting, told the members present that there was no budget to remove the fallen trees on the Bank Walk or to deal with other trees which might be in danger of falling. Saying that there were a number of trees potentially in danger of falling, Mr. Sweeney said that as the Bank Walk is neither a footpath nor a road there is no provision for it in the budget. After some discussion, €10,000 was allocated to remove some the fallen trees and to investigate solutions for dealing with the other trees. It is also hoped to plant replacement young trees in the area.

Restoration underway at Church of Ireland

Photo: Nathan Wray Work has begun on the tower and spire of the Church of Ireland, in order to repair the stonework, leadwork and pointing. The main contractor is Rainey Restoration Ltd. and so far things are off to a good start. This project will cost around â‚Ź150,000 and the church are actively seeking grant aid from several sources, as well as doing their own fundraising. Setting Unreasonable Goals Can Backfire

If you start out expecting perfection every step of the way, or with a weight loss goal that is too ambitious, you are likely to be disappointed. The weight did not go on overnight so it won’t come off overnight! At the beginning of a study done at the University of Pennsylvania, participants were asked how they would feel about losing the amount of weight that the researchers could predict would be the likely result. The reply was that they would be disappointed. To be satisfied or “happy” about their weight loss, those taking part said that the amount would have to be substantially more. BEING DISSATISFIED WITH A REALISTIC WEIGHT LOSS IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. So what is a realistic weight loss? Successful weight loss is typically losing about 1-2lbs per week. More rapid or dramatic loss is possible, but it is the exception, not the rule. One-way system for Killybegs

Cllr. Niamh Kennedy held a meeting in Killybegs on Tuesday night to discuss the traffic flow problem in the town. Over forty people attended and it was decided to make Bridge Street a one-way-system.

“We got 100% agreement from the residents of Bridge Street with regard to the oneway-system. I held a meeting with the roads engineer two weeks ago and outlined our concerns. A proposal for a new car park was discussed and a potential site was the County Council Yard which we would consider a good location but an alternative site for the yard would have to be agreed. This meeting is the start of a long process,” Cllr. Kennedy told The Eye on Donegal.

Magee Donegal Bay Spring Sportive 2018

The 2018 Magee Donegal Bay Spring Sportive proved to be another great success with almost 450 cyclists registering to take part. With limited places this year, the 140/100k routes were completely sold out and the 50k route also saw a sizeable crowd take part.

The cyclists began to arrive early on Saturday morning at event HQ, the Abbey Vocational School, and there was a real buzz around the place with the music pumping in the background. When the rain appeared just before the off, there was a sinking feeling that it would be a poor day for cycling, but fortunately the clouds cleared and participants were treated to a chilly but dry day to take in the scenery.

Cycle Against Suicide 2018

If you wish to take part in Cycle Against Suicide 2018 then come along and join in. You don’t have to take part in all stages; you can choose to do one stage or more. The event runs from Saturday, April 28th to Monday, May 7th. Cyclists will leave the Dublin area heading towards Newry and then Belfast, from there they continue on to Omagh arriving in Ballyshannon on Thursday 3rd May making their way back to the start of the route the following morning, via Ballina. The Lady members of Donegal Golf Club, Murvagh, had their first club night of the season on Tuesday 9th April. A very enjoyable night was had by all. The Lady Captain, Mary Walsh, welcomed everyone especially the ladies who have just taken to the fairways. Ciara Mooney from Physio Eireann gave an excellent, informative talk on the importance of “warm up” exercises before going out to golf in order to avoid injury and lower the handicap, of course. Ciara advised the ladies to keep fit and active to achieve better results. The Handicap secretary, Gillian O’Callaghan explained the new handicap system. The minor monthly prizes were then presented and the night concluded with the Lady Captain wishing all the clubs team’s success for the season.

In cold and windy conditions the reserves showed plenty of football skills and determination. The Fishermen made the early running and were 1-3 to 0-1 ahead after 15 minutes. Naomh Brid Reserve replied with points from Eoin Rush and Pauric McDaid to cut the margin to three, leaving the half-time score 1-4 to 0-4 in favour of Killybegs. Naomh Brid Reserve dominated the second half with a Conor McNulty goal after 37 minutes. Then centre half forwards Eoin Quinn and Conor McNulty had two points in 5 minutes.

Dunkineely Celtic U14s game on Saturday 14th April was cancelled. 5K Fun Walk There will be a 5K Fun Walk in aid of Killaghtee Accordion Band, on Saturday 21st April, leaving Floyd’s Corner at 11am. Fund Raising night in McIntyre’s Bar at 9pm. Live music on the night. All contributions will go to the Band.

There was no overall winner of this week’s lotto draw. The jackpot now stands at €6,600. The numbers drawn were 11, 13, 18, 23, 24. Our senior men went down against a wellprepared Killybegs team last Sunday. The lads were level at half time. The Senior Team had a hard earned victory over Na Rossa in Dunkineely on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-10. A goal by corner Daragh Murrin mid-way through the second half was the difference for the home side who at one stage led by six points.
