Primary Care Centre approved for Donegal Town
Local architect part of Public-Private Partnership for major development William Donoghue & Associates Ltd of Mountcharles and DHM Developments Ltd have been awarded the contract for delivery of a new Primary Care Centre for Donegal Town in a Public-Private Partnership with the HSE. The site for the Primary Care Centre is located adjacent to the existing Donegal County Council Public Service Centre at Drumlonagher as shown in the photo below. In addtion the site has previously been granted full planning permission for a Nursing Home development and also for the Supermac’s Plaza development, which is under construction at present.
Donegal Town and its environs will soon have the benefit of a state-of-the-art Healthcare Facility. Primary Care refers to all of the health and social care services which are typically available in the community outside of a hospital. The centre will include GPs, Public Health Nurses and a vast range of other services whilst providing a single point of contact to the health care system in a modern state-of-the-art facility. William Donoghue & Associates Ltd have been awarded the contract to design the centre. Both construction and operation of the centre will be tendered to the local area creating a significant number of jobs.

The wider economic benefits to local businesses and the community at large will be immeasurable. The project is in the early design stage at present; however, speaking with the Eye on Donegal this week, William Donoghue said, “You can expect to see a planning application lodged in the coming weeks.” The site at Drumlonagher, which has long been intended to provide services to the local area, is now taking a significant step in the deliverance of that vision. This will ensure that Donegal Town and surrounding areas will be provided with the services that an expanding town requires.

Donegal Town and The O’Donnell Castle The rise of the O’Donnell clan in the 13th century saw the emergence of Donegal Town as the ruling seat of the Kingdom of Tir Conaill (the present County Donegal). It was the first Red Hugh O’Donnell who built the original Norman-style tower house and, with his wife Nuala O’Brien, brought the Franciscan friars to Donegal in 1474.

Among the local restaurants nominated in The Irish Restaurant Awards 2018 are The Market House Restaurant in the Abbey Hotel. We are humbled and delighted!” Chapman’s Restaurant in the Central Hotel has been shortlisted in the Irish Hotel Awards 2018 for “Hotel Restaurant of the Year”. Peter Mullaney

Peter Mullaney, from Mullinasole, is a full time Videographer. From an early age, he had an avid interest in Film and TV. Peter spent most of his childhood taking pictures and making short films inspired by the picturesque scenery on his doorstep. From 2010 to 2013, Peter studied a B.A. in Film & Documentary at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). In his final year he specialised in Cinematography, Audio and Documentary. Peter has been fortunate to gain work experience on TV shows such as Jack Taylor and Vikings. One of Peter’s projects in his final year of college was a short documentary with renowned Irish actor Sean McGinley. This was successfully entered in the “Harnessing Creativity” Festival in 2013 where it was showcased along with other Irish documentaries and short films. In October 2014, Peter set up his own business - Mullaney Media - a creative video provider that specialises in online promotional videos for the commercial and public sector. Mullaney Media also produces wedding videos, music videos and a wide range of different live events. Peter says: “A video presence is an integral part of promoting your business online. Railway Heritage The Donegal Railway Heritage Centre showcases the operations of the County Donegal Railways - two narrow gauge railways which operated in County Donegal from 1863 until 1959. Easter Soccer Academy Coaching Camp Was attended by around 30 boys and girls, aged 5-16 years, all enjoyed it very much. Each child got a new football and camp certificate. Coaches were: Gerry Ebbs, Paddy Gallagher, Steven Curnen. Ray Flynn did great work assisted by young players Eoin McManus, Charlie Cannard, Peter Lang, Oisin McCallig, Joe Gillespie, Wayne McMenamin. Ruth Harron and Marie McGinty ran a little tuck shop each day. Kevin Martin and Enda Brogan set up the camp. We are hosting an FAI Summer Camp in July. Inter Firms will be held mid-June. U16s have one team, both U14s and U12s have two teams taking part in the local leagues at the moment.

AVS Notes Induction Day for incoming sixth class students:
The incoming first year Induction Day now takes place on Tuesday, May 15th. There will be no school for Transition Year, LCA or 1st year on this day. All other students will have class as normal on this day.
Junior Certificate Home Economics Junior Certificate Home Economics Practical Examination will take place between the 9th and 20th of April. The examination involves a culinary skills assessment. This is held in school where an external examiner comes and assesses students’ skills. Students are aware of their tasks at least two weeks before the examination. It accounts for 50% of the higher level overall grade and 60% of the ordinary level. Days are yet to be confirmed.
Music Music practicals will also take place after the holidays from the 9th to 11th April. The performance component of the course involves preparing a programme of music to perform for an examiner who will visit the school. Performance activities can include: singing and/or playing solo, singing or playing as a member of a musical group or conducting a musical group. Higher level students are expected to perform three songs or pieces, ordinary level students must perform two songs or pieces.

Architect in Schools Project TY students are continuing to work on their Architect in Schools Project. The National Architects in Schools Initiative is an exciting programme for Transition Year students. Architects are placed in schools to facilitate hands-on design workshops with student groups in 25 schools across Ireland. Students learn a variety of new skills and gain insight to the professional life of designers and architects.

Senior Teams The Sunday Team had
a comfortable victory over Lagan Harps at the weekend running out 5-0 winners. Daniel McHugh scored a hat-trick, Ben Sweeney and David Graham were the other scorers. An excellent team performance.
The Saturday Team made it through to the semi-final of the Voodoo Venue Cup after a highly entertaining game against Glenea United. Gavin Mulreany was the hero for Rory Dunlevy’s men saving a last minute penalty to ensure a semi-final encounter with Glencar Celtic. It was a deserved victory with Stephen Graham and Michael O’Donnell on the score sheet in a game that ended 2-1. It’s a return to league action this Saturday with Cappry Rovers visiting the Hospital Field. U16 The U16s produced another good team performance versus Drumbar United last Thursday evening running out comfortable winners. Some great individual performances on show. The term organic is cropping up more and more often over recent years. There are still those that consider it as an extremist’s notion and think shops use it as an excuse to increase the price of a product. Many others are coming around to the idea of sustainability and even if they don’t garden themselves, prefer their food to be safe, flavoursome and chemical free. Organic principles don’t just apply to the growing of food however. There are many ways you can introduce some organic practices into your own gardening. By improving soil fertility you will not only be ensuring your plants are well fed, you will also be encouraging beneficial insects to help keep natural control over unwanted pests e.g. Ladybirds love to feast on aphids! Opting to use a general pesticide as a quick fix risks killing the natural predators too, thus leaving you open to a worse attack in following years. It is not too late to preserve or renew the complex ecosystem in your garden. By adding well rotted farmyard manure, leafmould or ‘Living Green Organic Compost’ to your beds, you will greatly improve the soil structure. This will allow for better plant growth and the survival of beneficial micro-organisms. Feed your pots with ‘Fish, Blood and Bone’ or a seaweed fertiliser. Find alternatives to spraying weeds with useful tools or flame weeders. Campaign to Retain Full Garda Station

A public meeting was held last Thursday, 29th March, to discuss concerns about the future of Donegal Town Garda Station. The meeting was attended by approximately 50 concerned locals as well as Deputy Pearse Doherty TD, Deputy Thomas Pringle TD, Cllr. Noel Jordan, Cllr. Tom Conaghan and Cllr. John Campbell and was chaired by Mayor Pauric Kennedy. Deputy Doherty said that the number of Gardai in Donegal Town has fallen from 34 in 2008 to 22 by 2016. Despite a planned upgrade of the station, at an estimated cost of €1.5 million, which is soon to commence, the opening hours of the station are planned to be reduced considerably according to a recent Garda announcement. Donegal Town’s station is the third largest in the county and when Glenties station was closed local representatives were assured that Donegal Town would remain a full time station. Speaking before the meeting, Deputy Pringle stated that “The 24-hour presence of Gardaí is important particularly as the nature of crime is changing and local community policing becomes a vital part of combatting crime. I’ve already had concerned residents and businesses in touch with my office over visible increases in crime since Garda numbers have been reduced across the County. Cleary Centre delegation to meet Minister and HSE
Concerns regarding the centre are to be highlighted directly to Minister Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has arranged a meeting on the 18th of April for a delegation from the Cleary Centre with Minister Finian McGrath and HSE officials regarding ongoing concerns about funding for the centre. Deputy Gallagher said, “I have been lobbying the Department and the Minister on this matter for some time and firmly believe the only way to make progress is to have all parties around the one table in order to resolve the outstanding matters.”
Pat the Cope has confirmed to the Eye on Donegal that the Minister of State Finian McGrath along with HSE officials who have first-hand knowledge of this project have agreed to meet with a delegation from the Cleary Centre in order to move the development of the Centre forward. Pat the Cope stated that he has been assured that there are adequate funds within the HSE budget to deliver this project. Our Seniors saw victory on the field following a very competitive game. Easter Sunday the seniors faced Naomh Columba in Glencolmcille. The Reserves had a well deserved victory but the Seniors were unfortunately on the losing side on this occasion.

So you’ve gone off the rails - eaten a giant Easter egg or a family sized bar of chocolate or had one too many drinks. Beating yourself up or calling yourself a failure is self-sabotage. This “all or nothing” kind of thinking makes you feel bad in the moment and can lead to you giving up altogether. Forgiving yourself and moving on is a much better approach. This is not letting yourself off the hook, it’s about treating yourself as you would your best friend - encouraging and supporting rather than blaming. Tell yourself that one bad weekend doesn’t mean you’ve blown it - it just means... you’ve had a bad/good weekend! Think about what you “could have done” rather than what you “should have done”. This subtle shift in language moves you to a positive place. Consider how you could do things differently when faced with similar challenges - tell yourself this is what you will do!

Easter Sunday win for Naomh Brid Naomh Brid 0-9 Buncrana 0-3 Naomh Brid delivered an Easter Sunday victory and produced a magnificent display to overcome a strong Buncrana side in the Division 3 encounter. Naomh Brid appeared to be in trouble seconds in when Stephen Doherty slipped and John Campbell had a glorious goal chance hitting the side netting. Caolan McGonigle opened Buncrana’s account on 8 mins with a monstrous free after a great fetch. Cian Gallagher also showed he can catch and was in the danger area, his goal shot narrowly going wide. 11mins in, Ryan Brogan claimed the first score of the game for Naomh Brid. Oisin Doherty, Buncrana, hit a free for his team moments later. Dara Brogan after a great run had an
inspirational score with 19 mins on the clock. Callum Gallagher started the move to Gary McCafferty, with Shane Walsh getting a good point, with 9 mins remaining to the change over. I am often bewildered to hear about the comings and goings of the kids that come to my classes weekly – they have far busier social lives than I do! Getting your kids involved in afterschool activities is fantastic for their little minds and bodies but often there is a host of learning going on that we don’t see. Obviously, here in The Energy Hub, our focus is on helping kids burn energy and learn that fitness is fun, in a safe and welcoming environment. However, regardless of the sport or hobby your child takes part in here are some of the other skills they are developing at the same time:

Pathologists in LUH had decided to withdraw services from Wednesday 3rd April as the HSE were unable to fund the agreed upgrading of the Mortuary. This would have meant that all 150 post‑mortems annually would have to be carried out in Sligo with serious implications for service provision within the county. Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher said, “I was asked to become involved with a view to securing an agreement between all parties and to avoid the withdrawal of services from LUH. “I am happy to confirm that after days of consultations between the Pathologist, County Coroner and the HSE that agreement has been reached to proceed with the upgrading works which are urgently required for the mortuary. As a result of this the pathologists have accepted the revised proposal and all sides have now signed up.”

Currently dozens of participants each year are denied a place on these social employment schemes due to the fact they are on Jobpath at the time such a vacancy arises. “I and my colleagues have been inundated with complaints from people who feel that they are being unfairly coerced into JobPath but would prefer to take up place on a CE, RSS or Tús scheme, which in many instances is more appropriate and suitable to their needs,” Pat the Cope said. “I fully acknowledge the massive contribution that schemes such as CE, RSS and Tús offer rural communities right across Donegal and furthermore these schemes are of tremendous benefit to participants and to the community at large and we are determined to safeguard them,” concluded Pat the Cope.

Church of Ireland Tower & Spire Repairs
Work to repoint and repair the stonework and leadwork on the Tower & Spire of the Church of Ireland will begin during April. The whole tower and gable of the church will be covered with scaffolding, but church services will continue as normal. A number of fundraising events will be held to help cover the costs, the first of these will be a dance on Friday 4th May in the Abbey Hotel from 9pm with music from Out & About. Tickets are €10 and are available from any Vestry member.
