GLEBE FURNITURE OPENS

A new Furniture Store is opening in Donegal Town on Thursday 29th March. Located at the Glebe, just behind SuperValu, it will be housed in what was the Foodland Cash and Carry premises. The large new store will be called Glebe Furniture and is owned by Colm and Rosaleen O’Rourke from Donegal Town. Colm and Rosaleen already run The Four Masters Bookshop and The Diamond Store. Speaking with Colm recently, he said, ‘As we already stock furniture in our Four Masters Shop on the Diamond, we feel we have the experience and it’s a natural progression to expand to a much larger premises now that it has become possible for us to do so.’ The Eye on Donegal is printed and published by Cavern Design Printing in Donegal Town. The magazine is entirely funded by advertisements which means it can be provided free to the community and tourists alike. Everything Under One Roof The Food Hall in the Abbey Hotel is celebrating its first birthday in its new format. Just one year ago what was the Abbey Coffee House with 24 seats and a 10 foot food counter was revealed with a new larger, more open and accessible layout with a 34 foot food counter and seating for up to 40 people in addition to the connected seating area of the restaurant which adds over 140 more seats. Open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, the Food Hall offers an array of food to suit all tastes and appetites. From a cup of coffee in the morning with one of Freda’s famous bakes or scones, to an Irish breakfast or a mid-morning sandwich special (hot roast beef on sourdough bread is especially popular), the Food Hall offers a wide range of healthy options. These include full lunches catered by the dynamic duo of Konrad and

Mulreany’s is one of the oldest licensed family run premises in Donegal Town. Myself and my sisters are 4th generation Mulreanys.  My great-grandfather, Michael Mulreany set up the pub in the 1880’s and ran it with his wife Elizabeth. My grandfather William was a good sportsman and studied at St Malachy’s College where he won an Ulster Medal. He moved to London when he finished school and returned upon the death of his father in 1934. William was a very entrepreneurial man. He worked as an auctioneer and also had a wool exporting business which he ran at the rear of the pub, exporting wool to England. He bottled his own beer and my great grandfather would have bottled whiskey. William had the most accurate weighing scale in the town and the boxing club used this frequently to weigh the boxers before fights. He ran the pub from 1934 and then he married my grandmother Anne and they ran the pub together. When William passed away

in 1978, my Dad, Barry ran the pub for 38 years until he passed away in 2016.   We don’t serve draught beer in the pub - there never was any draught. There are definitely no plans to change that going forward, it’s what gives the pub its character and makes it unique! We have a great gang of regulars and the craic is always good!! My Dad had the following line for anyone looking for draught: “The only draught in here is the one coming from under the door” and

this has stuck with us and I suppose as the old saying goes: if it’s not broke, don’t fix it! Nicola Mulreany

Eye on Donegal Profiles… Michelle McKee

Golden Grazers, Glencar

Textile Artist, Michelle McKee uses un-spun wool to make hand felted, atmospheric, landscape pictures. She was introduced to felt making during her studies for a Degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Fine and Applied Art, at the University of Ulster. Since then, Michelle moved from her native town of Belfast and travelled the globe before settling in Donegal Town. Working from her studio at the Donegal Craft Village, Michelle uses soap, water and wool to create colourful, rugged, hand felted scenes. The felt work is finished with machine stitch and hand embroidery which adds unusual and interesting depth and detail. ‘I love nature, animals, dramatic skies, seasons changing. My aim is to create art work which captures an emotion – often I will notice a moment when the light, mood and content of a scene causes me to stop and take a breath. I reflect on that image and I later record those feelings and visions in my felt art work.’ Michelle currently sells hand felted originals, cards and limited edition giclee prints in her gallery. Sisters Soaring Together

Ruth and Katie Gillespie will take to the world Stage on Sunday, 8th April, in Maastricht, Holland to compete in the WIDA World and European Championships. The girls, who dance for Scoil Rince Tir Chonaill in Donegal Town, will be representing our town and county at this prestigious event. Making it to the World Championships is the ultimate goal for every competitive dancer and it is even more special that these two sisters get to achieve it together. A defining characteristic of The World Irish Dance Association (WIDA) is its friendly and welcoming culture. Competition is limited to the dance floor, while off the stage every dancer, parent and teacher becomes part of one big WIDA family with a shared love for Irish dance. To add another dimension to this family story, the girls are trained by their older sister Sarah, who is the teacher of Scoil Rince Tir Chonaill here in Donegal Town. ‘I couldn’t be prouder of the two girls,’ Sarah said. ‘Nobody really understands the hours of work that go into preparing for a competition of this standard and the commitment the two girls have shown has really blown me away. They are the most positive of influences I could have asked for my younger dancers to have, and of course it helps a little that they are my baby sisters!’ Every parent and dancer from Scoil Rince Tir Chonaill is rooting for Ruth and Katie and wishes them every success on their journey to Maastricht.

Gardening with Emer EASTER EGGCITEMENT This Bank Holiday, Monday 2nd April, Ashtree Garden Centre will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt at 2pm. It is an outdoor event suitable for tots to teens, with the under 4s getting a headstart on the more experienced hunters. A â‚Ź2 donation is suggested for the Solace Cancer Support Centre. For those not egg hunting this weekend, it is an ideal time to sow your seeds indoors. Growing from seed can be very rewarding both mentally and financially. As a first time sower, the information available can seem overwhelming. You will be bamboozled with planting depths, optimum germination temperatures and techniques such as scarifying or stratification and you may give up before even trying. Luckily there are a few general rules that apply to most seed. Begin by filling your seed trays or pots with a seed compost. Water them before sowing. The size of the seed will determine the planting depth. For large seed like nasturtium and beetroot, using the end of a pencil, make a hole approximately double the height of the seed. Place it in the hole and cover with compost. Tiny seeds like lobelia can just be scattered on the surface of the damp compost without any covering needed. Leave your trays in a bright place that will hold a temperature of 15-20Â°C. Usually a south facing windowsill does the trick. Germination times vary but you should see your first seedlings emerge in 10-21 days. Bríd’s Weight Watching Tips We are now officially in Spring time and I personally love this time of year. Does it help those on the weight loss journey? It will if you want it to. Brighter evenings give us more daylight hours to be active and as we all know being more active is good for weight loss and overall good health. When people join Weight Watchers we do encourage them to be active and for some, this is a frightening prospect. However I can assure you there is no need for fear! All we ask is that you move more than you did before. If new Members are totally inactive, all we suggest is 3x20 minute walks in the week. That amounts to an hour more than was being done previously. With this approach members find it manageable and sustainable. Most people gradually increase this walking time themselves as this activity becomes an enjoyable aspect of their journey. For those more active we are spoilt for choice here in Town. Chose from Couch to 5K with our local athletics club, boot camps at BFit or DTFitness, walking groups or even dance classes if you like group activities. Otherwise just enjoy your walking whether alone or with a buddy (even the four legged variety!) Longer evenings meansno excuses for not getting out there. 1. A frozen shoulder happens when the ligaments of the shoulder joint become tight. Pain is the first symptom but as the condition progresses, the pain gradually eases while stiffness of the joint increases. 2. The medical term for a frozen shoulder is adhesive capsulitis and it has nothing to do with cold weather! 3. A frozen shoulder is most common in females, 40-60 years old. 4. There are a number of diseases that increase the risk of a frozen shoulder. These diseases don’t cause the condition but it is more common in insulin-dependent diabetics, patients with thyroid problems, cardiovascular disease and Parkinson’s disease. 5. Physiotherapy treatment is aimed at helping to reduce the pain and maintain as much movement as possible. Even with treatment it can take 18-24 months to settle. Good Friday Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion, suffering and death of Jesus Christ and, along with Ash Wednesday, is a fast day in the Catholic Church, and falls within the Paschal Triduum. This year Good Friday falls on March 30th. For Christians, this day commemorates not just a historical event but the sacrificial death of Christ, which along with the resurrection, comprises the heart of the Christian faith. The major Good Friday worship services typically begin in the afternoon at 3:00pm (the time Jesus is said to have died). The Veneration of the Cross is also common. This is when Christians approach a wooden cross and venerate it, often by kneeling before it, or kissing part of it. This custom probably originated in Jerusalem

in the 7th or 8th century, and continues to this day in many Western Churches. In the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, no Masses are said on Good Friday or Holy Saturday, therefore the reserved host from the Holy Thursday Mass is used. Many Churches also offer the Stations of the Cross, also called the "Way of the Cross," on Good Friday. This is a devotion in which fourteen events surrounding the death of Jesus are commemorated. The celebration of Good Friday is ancient. The day gradually became a time of penance and fasting as the anniversary of the death of Christ. The name "Good Friday" possibly comes from "God's Friday," although the exact reason for the current name is unclear.

IRIS HENDERSON, Canada, formerly Inver. Who died on the 4th March, 2018. The family of the late Sean McNelis would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who sympathized and supported us in our recent sad bereavement. We thank those who sent mass cards, sympathy cards, telephoned, sent floral tributes, made donations in lieu of flowers. Our thanks to those who attended the wake and funeral and those who travelled long distances to be with us. A word of thanks to our relations, friends and especially our neighbours and very good friends for always being there to support us and also to those who brought food to the house. A special word of thanks to Gareth O’Donnell of the pharmacy in Glenties for his assistance. Our thanks to Dr Cooke and staff at the Glenties Medical Centre and also to the District Nurse and Palliative Care Nurse who attended to Sean during his illness. We thank the doctors and nurses in Letterkenny University Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital, Dublin who cared for Sean with professionalism and great kindness. A special word of thanks to Fr. Gerard Cunningham who visited Sean at home and in the hospital and for saying the rosary at the wake. Also thanks to Fr. Donnchadh O’Baoill for celebrating the funeral mass, and special thanks to the readers, altar servers and to John Francis O’Donnell for the beautiful singing in the church. Our grateful thanks to Frank McGuinness Undertakers for his professionalism and support and also to the grave diggers. We thank the Highlands Hotel for the funeral lunch. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually we hope that this acknowledgment will be accepted as an expression of our deepest appreciation. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.

Helen will be reposing in the residence at 89 Edergole Road, Mullanboy, Fintona, Omagh, BT78 2NG from 29 March 2018. Helen’s remains will leave the above residence on Saturday 31st March 2018 at 11.15am for funeral service in St Mary’s Chapel, Drumragh, 50 Brook St., Omagh, BT78 5HE at 12noon. Burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. Deeply regretted by her loving entire family circle.

Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif 2018 Community Briefing Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with cycling specialists Ride Wild, are kickstarting the Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif with a community briefing at 7pm on Tuesday 3rd April at the Abbey Hotel. The Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif is Ireland’s only fully supported, multi–stage cycling event that will take place twice this year: in April (20th April – 8th May) and September (8th - 26th). The Fáilte Ireland initiative was created to promote the Wild Atlantic Way as a cycling destination. It is aimed at attracting visitors along the full route during spring and autumn – tourism’s ‘shoulder’ periods.

Participants in the Sportif will have the choice of covering the full distance (2,152km) over 20 days; completing 4 days’ stages or joining the Sportif for a single stage along the route. The towns the cyclists pass through play a huge part in enhancing the experience on the Wild Atlantic Way Cycle Sportif. Each town they spend a night in is a designated Host Town (including Donegal Town) and has been specially chosen. Cyclists are encouraged to explore our Host Towns, embrace their welcome, and immerse themselves in Ireland’s colourful culture – it’s famous for a reason!
