New Horizons at McMonagle Stone
Renovation works are currently underway at McMonagle Stone’s Head Office and Production Facility in Mountcharles. The company is preparing for the arrival of a new state of the art machine that will increase production and improve the primary sawing process. For over 44 years and 3 generations, this family managed business has been delivering unique cuts of stone from the 4 quarries they operate in Co. Donegal. What started off as a part time business by Dan McMonagle in 1974 has grown from solely producing and supplying stone locally for domestic builds to a leading company that sees demand for its products from international markets. Today McMonagle Stone employs over 70 people across its quarries, production facilities and offices. With a Landscape Centre in Swords, Co. Dublin, the company is excited to announce the
opening of a new Depot and Display Area at the McGrath Business Park in Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Commenting on the move, Dan McMonagle said, “The opening of the new depot in Lisburn adds significant capacity to our market presence, enabling us to respond to the increasing demand for natural stone in Northern Ireland. The move demonstrates our commitment to growing our distribution and improving accessibility for our customers to view our broad range of products on display.” With renovation works at Mountcharles due for completion in May, 2018 is set to be an exciting year for McMonagle Stone as the company prepares to not only launch a new depot but also a new company website and online shop, which will further enhance the company brand and online positioning within the natural stone industry.

Eye on Donegal Profiles… Graine Callaghan
Daffodil Day
Daffodil Day is the Irish Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser, it takes place in March every year and raises millions of euro to support cancer patients, and help provide advice and support, as well as funding life-saving cancer research.
On Daffodil Day, thousands of volunteers take part by selling flowers and daffodil pins to collect funds for the fight against cancer. Many people organise coffee mornings and other fundraising events in their homes, local communities, and workplaces.
Graine Callaghan hails from Barnesmore, and is a full-time photographer. She worked in retail for eleven years and from a young age her passion has been photography. Buying her first camera at just 16, Graine kept adding to her collection and bought her first DLSR - a Canon 70d in 2014. She has since upgraded to a Sony mirrorless camera. Graine’s other passion is travelling. She has visited many places and seen some amazing sights around the world including in Canada, Europe and America. However, now that she is back home, Graine says that she appreciates the beauty of her home county of Donegal and all of the beautiful sights and scenery it has to offer. After finishing a course in the Dublin Institute of Photography Graine worked freelance with the Donegal Times where she gained great experience and got many opportunities to do different kinds of photography and meet some fascinating people along the way. Graine says, “It was always very special when I got a front page photo and one that stands out is the 109th Infantry Battalion that marched through Donegal Town before deployment overseas.” (pictured above). “My aim is to create memories for people to look back on forever. The Irish Cancer Society provides the public with information about cancer. It also provides services and support for patients and advocates for improvements in cancer care and treatment. The first Irish Daffodil Day was organized by Professor Darragh and Society CEO Tom Hudson in 1988. The day quickly became an annual March tradition. In 2001, the daffodil was adopted as the main logo. Daffodil Day is a day for us all to give hope to people affected by cancer. So on Friday, 23rd March please give what you can to make a difference to the lives of people going through cancer.

Donegal Town to get new Health Centre facility It was confirmed by the HSE late last week that a new health centre in Donegal Town is being progressed through a Public Private Partnership. This is welcome news for Donegal where the centre will enhance the delivery of health services – from GP facilities to community nursing to speech and language services. Funding for health centres is a solid and worthwhile investment in the country’s health care. With this approval by the HSE the contract and works will now progress through planning to construction stage hopefully within the next 18 months according to Pat the Cope Gallagher.

Palm Sunday is a Christian Movable Feast which falls each year on the Sunday before Easter. It commemorates the arrival of Jesus on a donkey into Jerusalem, where branches of the palm tree were placed along his path. This happened before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his Crucifixion on Good Friday. Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week. In the Roman Catholic Church and also in many Anglican and Lutheran Churches palm branches are blessed with an aspergillum outside the Church; this is called the ‘Blessing of the Palms’. A solemn procession then takes place before Mass is said. The blessed palms are saved in many Churches and are burned on Shrove Tuesday the following year to make ashes for the Ash Wednesday Service.

Healthy Facts with Physio Éireann This week our healthy facts are all about Total Knee Replacements (TKR)
1. TKR is a surgical treatment for knee osteoarthritis. When patients feel their quality of life is being significantly affected by their knee osteoarthritis their consultant may recommend a TKR. This surgery involves removing the degenerative areas of the knee and replacing them with artificial material. 2. You cannot be too fat or too old to have a TKR. International guidelines recommend that there should be no co-morbidity, such as age or body weight that stops you from having a TKR. Years ago, surgeons could refuse to operate on the basis that you are too old or too heavy… this is no longer best practice. 3. It is safe to walk on your knee straight after surgery. We can get you out of bed just hours after you wake up. This early mobilisation helps you and your knee recover quicker. 4. Exercises are essential, before and after. The stronger you are going into your surgery the easier the recovery. After surgery, your exercises are very important to ensure you regain the range of movement and strength in your knee. If you are struggling with your exercises, it is essential you contact your Chartered Physiotherapist. 5. Getting your TKR with the HSE can take time. Currently within the HSE you may have to wait years to get a TKR. You can get your knee done in Northern Ireland and the HSE will reimburse the cost under the “Cross Border Healthcare Directive” (amount varies). Daylight Saving Time or DTS is where we put our clocks forward by one hour during the Summer months, so we have more daylight in the evenings while making sunrise time a little later in the mornings. The idea of doing this had been around for some time but it was first introduced on the 30th April 1916 by the German Empire and their Austrian - Hungarian Allies to conserve coal during the war. Britain and its allies quickly followed suit, and the USA introduced DTS in 1918. A lot of countries abandoned the idea after the war but it was reintroduced during the Second World War, and was widely used during the Energy Crisis of the 1970’s. Daylight Saving gives most an increase in daylight hours after work and helps energy consumption with reduced need for light and heating. However many farmers’ groups would prefer that it not be changed. In the EU nowadays all put their clocks forward at the same time in accordance with an EU Directive which means the changes happens at 1am Greenwich Mean Time; 2am Central European Time and 3am Eastern European Time, in order to cause as little disruption as possible. European Summer time is from the last Sunday in March (25th this year) to the last Sunday in October.

St Francis NS, Barnes in St Patrick’s Day Parade Our theme this year was “St. Francis of Assisi loved all the animals” - it was a great opportunity to celebrate the patron saint of our school and the patron saint of animals. He founded the Franciscan Brotherhood who have Friaries all over the world including in Donegal where the The Four Masters wrote their “Annals” between 1632 and 1636. A new Friary in Rossnowlagh was opened in 1952. St. Francis is said to have tamed a wolf who was attacking his home town in Italy. This story influenced the centrepiece of our display. Well done to all the children and parents who looked fantastic in their various animal costumes. Thanks to everyone who helped out in preparations. Bríd’s Weight Watching Tips Favourite breakfasts As a follow up to last week’s breakfast article I am including a version of one of our members’ favourite go-to breakfasts. The advantage to this is that it can be prepared the day before and even more conveniently 3-4 days before. From experience I have found that the members who join up and are introducing the breakfast habit find it easier to maintain when all they have to do is reach for the prepared food. This recipe is also a fab breakfast on the go. ENJOY!
Greek yogurt with oats and raspberries
Take a handful of raspberries (or any berries you like), heat half in a microwave for 30 sec or a pan for a few minutes until they just start breaking up and the juice is released. Layer the heated berries in a container with 30g oats, the rest of the berries on top with 0% fat Greek yogurt. You can make this the night before too and keep in the fridge ready for the next day. SERVES 1 Start with the small changes to bring about big results.

Four little girls growing up on a farm, living in a cottage that was falling apart, Playing dress-up with cows, chasing round after ducks, collecting hen eggs before school it did start Houses made of mud, stones for a shop and all kinds of leaves used to pay Trees they were giants, sticks they were swords and every day we had dragons to slay! Bernie, your car didn’t have to be sat on the street for your siblings to know you were home, For on opening the door and entering the house, a pungent smell of dettol did roam With a bucket in one hand, a mop in the other, you gave us a look that could kill! We barely could breathe, we dare not dirty those floors, and until they were dry we stood still! Four little girls on Christmas morn go racing to the tree Grabbing from beneath its branches the wonderful gifts we did see No fancy toys, no costly gadgets, but how we squealed in sheer delight When Santa left us doll sets and stockings, and we played all day ’til night. Bernie, you turned into such a beautiful woman, stunning, stylish and smart You could cook with top chefs, do gardening with pros but it was your skills as a nurse that set you apart Families they loved you, patients adored you, each one was unique in your care You rolled up your sleeves, got on with the job, being a hands-on nurse these days is rare. Four little girls cocooned in innocence, honouring and obeying our Mum and Dad, Dressed in hand-me-downs, treats once a week, luxuries so few to be had But we had what no money could buy, a gift more precious than gold We had love in abundance, hugs and kisses ten thousand fold Bernie, if you were here right now, you’d have that cheeky grin upon your face Watching me up on this Altar feeling oh so out of place Telling not but wonderful things of you, when we both knew you had a temper like thunder! What I wouldn’t give to have you by my side, I’d gladly let you tear me asunder! Four little girls have now become three, children no more are we When the Lord sent his beloved Angels, we had to let you go, we had to set you free You lived your life caring for others, even when you knew you were going to die I’m so proud to have had you for a sister, blessed among women am I. I cannot begin to imagine the torture Wee Mammy must be going through I cannot imagine the loss of a child, for to save their children is what all parents do I cannot begin to imagine how Cailean feels at losing his young mother All I can hope and pray is that we each take care of the other. Four little girls will go charging through Heaven where Angels play St. Peter at the gate will be yelling as we try to stay out of his way Jesus will play hide and seek with us, causing mayhem and delight Until we meet again precious Bernie, we love and miss you, Sleep Tight.

Car Maintenance with Paul This has been a very cold winter in Ireland and although we in Donegal Town have not experienced the worst of it, many parts of the country have had very bad days of frost and snow.
04 The windscreen washer bottle is your friend on bad winter days and nights and keeping it topped up with water and a good detergent is extremely important. Also the aim of the washer jets is critical.
Most if not all households in rural Ireland depend very much on the one mode of transport available to them, “The car”.
05 Wiper blades like the washer bottle are critical to having good vision at all times. You can easily maintain you wiper blades by putting some household Flash liquid on a soft cloth or kitchen towel and cleaning the working edge of the wiper blade. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt you will clean off the wiper blade and this prevents oily streaks building up on your windscreen, simple and effective.
The winter months are the most likely time of year for your car to break down. However you can reduce the possibility of this occurring by carrying out regular maintenance. This week I will deal with the simple weekly checks that can be done by you in particular during the winter but also a very good habit to get into all year round by referring to the Owner’s Manual. 01 Check engine oil level and use the correct grade oil to top up if required. 02 Check coolant level and use the correct grade to top up. 03 It is very important to check that all the lights are working, you will need somebody to assist you doing this check.
06 Clean the glass in your car by using a soft cloth or tissue using a good glass detergent. 07 Tyre pressure can be checked and adjusted at most if not all Filling Stations, recommended inflation pressures will be stated in your owner’s manual.
