Town Band to Lead Parade

The Donegal Town Community Band will this year once again proudly lead the Donegal Town St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The band has gone from strength to strength since reforming in 2010. With over 50 members ranging in age from 8 to 18 years, the opportunity is available to learn any instrument they wish, e.g. accordion, tin whistle, drums, glockenspiel etc.

In addition to three All Ireland titles in a row, the band has won numerous Ulster and County titles. They have also had the honour of performing at a garden party in Aras an Uachtarain hosted by President Michael D. Higgins and have led the Disney Parade in Disneyland Paris.

The preparation required to perform at this standard takes a lot of time and dedication from the members and from the tutors who give up their time voluntarily to teach them. Most recently the band presented “Grease the Musical” Local Tours and Full Taxi Service to rave reviews.

Cyndi Graham was born and brought up on the stunning peninsula of St. John’s Point. Tweed, sewing and weaving were a part of everyday life as her mother worked from home as a dressmaker, and her father, together with fishing and farming, also wove.

An apprenticeship with Ann Morrow in Donegal Craft Village in the early ’90’s armed Cyndi with the skills to open her unique studio in 1999. A lovely little thatched cottage, situated 3 miles down St. John’s Point on the family farm, was converted into a studio. Her father’s loom was refurbished and Cyndi began weaving tweeds and producing textiles, clothing and accessories.

The studio has been welcoming visitors from all over the world for almost 20 years. As well as providing unique products and gifts, callers also experience the process and are welcome to stand by the loom while Cyndi weaves, have a chat about the process and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. The beautiful little thatched studio overlooks McSwynes Bay, Crownarad mountain and Killybegs lighthouse. This stunning backdrop provides the inspiration for many colour combinations.

Visitors are welcome from the 1st April until 31st October.

If you decide to go all traditional in the kitchen on St. Patrick’s Day here are some ideas you might consider - all foods can be bought fresh and found in our local shops.

BREAKFAST: Full Irish, consisting of rashers of bacon either cured or smoked, pork sausages, fried egg, black and white puddings, beans, fried tomato and maybe some potato bread all washed down with a nice pot of steaming hot tea.

LUNCH: You might try a heartwarming bowl of Irish Stew, some lamb or beef which has been slow cooked with traditional locally grown vegetables, carrots, onions, potatoes and some pearl barley added to give substance - all simmered together for two hours or more.

DINNER: Some Irish bacon boiled with green cabbage or kale served with freshly boiled potatoes is a meal that includes all the food groups, you can also serve a white sauce or just some good Irish butter to put on the potatoes.

At the end of the day after all that cooking why not sit down and treat yourself to an Irish Coffee!

Gardening with Emer PREPARING YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN The term ‘Kitchen Garden’ may strike fear into a lot of gardeners. It conjures up images of digging over heavy soil to form ridges, hours of backache while keeping beds weed free and memories of failure, as one night of late frost or an evening of blight wipes out an entire crop.

The experience of the freshness and the superior taste of home grown food is the best reward for all the hard work. What’s more, there are now so many options that make the growing experience much easier.

For our damp, cool springs growing in raised beds is ideal. They are proven to heat the soil quicker, allow for better drainage, reduce the need for weeding and can be made to a suitable height for easier management. Many vegetable and herb crops also grow well in pots and containers.

Good preparation in spring allows for less effort during the growing year. As the proverb states ‘Tús maith, leath na hoibre’ – a good start is half the work. Why not get started on your kitchen garden this week by planting out onion sets and chitting your seed potatoes.

Speaking to the Eye on Donegal recently, Claire Harkin, Senior Travel Advisor, of Donegal Town Tourist Office said that they are very hopeful that 2018 will be another busy season for tourists coming to Donegal.

The office has progressed from a small building on the quay in what is now the Donegal Bay Waterbus office to the showcase premises which was opened in May 2008. The “Discover Ireland” Donegal Tourist Office is in the top 10 most visited tourist offices in the country.

Employing two advisors full time and two additional staff from May to September to cope with the busy season the office is professionally managed by Esther O’Donnell.

Catering to the home market as well as visitors from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Europe and an ever increasing number from the US, the office has seen a steady increase in tourist numbers over the years.

Many visitors from Australia and New Zealand are now including Ireland as part of a European tour and the Wild

Atlantic Way has encouraged many of them to come to Donegal.

A surprising number of Dutch visitors have been coming in recent years for walking and cycling tours. Watersports including surfing and also fishing are always in big demand.

Despite what we locals may feel, the Donegal weather is not a deterrent to the tourist - many like to see rain as they don’t get much at home!

All books, maps and guides are provided free and the office also has free Wi-Fi available. The office has an e-ticketing service allowing visitors to purchase tickets for day tours and major visitor attractions all over Ireland.

They also sell the Wild Atlantic Way passport.

Services offered for locals include bus timetables, information on local events and accommodation out of the county.

Opening hours are 9am - 5pm Monday to Saturday in the off season and from mid-June to mid-September the office is also open on Sundays 10am - 3pm.

AVS Notes PTM for Leaving Cert Parents

We are holding a second PTM for parents of Leaving Cert students following the completion of the Mock Exams on Wednesday 21st March. Please attend between 3.45pm and 6.15pm. This gives the parents of our 6th year students a second opportunity to speak to teachers.

JCSA - Business in Action CBA From the 12th – 20th March 2018 students in 2nd year will complete their Business Classroom Based Assessment. During this period students spend four weeks completing the Business in Action CBA. Students have to design a product, conduct market research, prepare a business plan and produce a prototype for this task.

This project will contribute to their Junior Cycle result.

Hotel Course TY students will visit Harvey’s Point, Solis Lough Eske Castle, The Sandhouse Hotel and The Abbey Hotel to gain experience on the day to day running of a hotel.

Training will be provided for students in the different areas within the hotel.

Students will also learn what is expected of them when applying for a job in a hotel.

School Tour update The students will be staying in the Hotel Van Vito, Lake Garda, during the trip. The first day’s outing is to Verona to see such sights as the Arena Amphitheatre, Juliet’s House and the Lambreti Tower. The next day is in Venice. Bring good footwear as there will be a 2 hour walking tour of the fabulous city. On Wednesday there will be a tour to the National Museum in Venice. Lastly, on Thursday, the students will visit Gardaland which boasts fifty exciting attractions!

Guidance Department DARE Applicants – please ensure you have made a 1:1 appointment to meet your Guidance Counsellor to complete the Educational Impact Statement. Remember, all paperwork must be given to the CAO by 01 April at 5.15 p.m.

The Guidance Department have set up a Google Classroom for Apprenticeship information provision. The classroom is updated regularly. The classroom code is 9vpzoug.

Lunchtime activities continue as normal.

Famine Memorial Plaque to be unveiled at Lough Eske

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled at the Famine Pot car park, Lough Eske, at 1pm on Thursday March 22nd. Erected by Lough Eske Community Group in association with the Gaelscoil, the plaque outlines the generosity of the Choctaw Native Americans to the famine-stricken people of Ireland in 1847. A History of St. Patrick St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born around 373 but the year of his birth is not certain. He was raised near Banna Vemta Burniae, a village in either lowland Scotland or in Wales, which was under Roman control.

As a youth he was kidnapped, along with many others, by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. In his autobiography Confessio, he relates that he spent the next six years imprisoned in the north of the island working as herdsmen of sheep and pigs on Mount Slemish in Co. Antrim.

During this period, he became increasingly religious and spent a lot of time in prayer.

Patrick escaped and returned to his family in Britain where he had a dream that the Irish were calling him back to tell them about God.

St Patrick’s Day Parade Route & Details St Patrick's Day parade in Donegal Town is one of the biggest parades in the county each year. This year’s parade will take place at the changed time of 1pm.

Vehicles participating in the parade will assemble at Donegal Town Business Park.

From there they will approach the Diamond from the new roundabout at the junction of the Mountcharles and Mullins roads.

As the motorised floats approach the bridge they will be joined by numerous walking participants from local schools and clubs and marching bands. This will expand the array of dazzling colour and comedy, magic and music, fun and frolics for all to enjoy.

The parade will enter the diamond from Bridge Street, move anti clockwise around two sides of the diamond and continue up Main Street before turning at the Community Hospital to retrace the route back to the beginning.

Along with the parade there will be activities to entertain children of all ages on the Diamond throughout the day. With a variety of shops, bars and restaurants open, offering a wide variety of entertainment including sport, music and dance, Donegal Town is the place to be this St Patrick's Day. ‘Come on in - the water’s lovely’

• 500g pork mince • 2 tsp fennel seeds • 250g kale • 25g pine nuts, toasted • crusty bread or mashed potato, to serve (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium pan, heat 1 tbsp of the oil over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook for 5 mins. Tip in the tomatoes with a splash of water, increase the heat and allow to bubble for 15 mins.

2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the lemon zest, mince, fennel seeds and a good pinch of seasoning. Mix well, then shape into walnut-sized balls.

3. Heat the remaining oil in a lidded frying pan over a medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown for 5 mins, then pour the tomato sauce into the pan. Simmer for 10 mins, then add the kale, cover with a lid and cook for 5 mins more until wilted.

Season to taste, and scatter over the pine nuts. Serve with the lemon wedges, for squeezing over, and crusty bread or mash, if you like.

Healthy Facts with Physio Éireann This week our healthy facts are all about the bladder.

1. 1 in 3 women suffer from urinary incontinence. There is a huge number of Irish women affected by the involuntary leakage of urine from their bladder. It can affect women of all ages, for a variety of reasons, from pregnancy and childbirth, through to menopause.

2. It is normal to go to the toilet every 2-4 hours during the day and once a night? Do you go more than this? Do you rush to the toilet? Do you go to the toilet “just in case”? Do you know every public toilet in your town? If so you may have an overactive bladder.

3. Leaking urine is never normal. Some ladies will leak a drop or two, maybe when they laugh or dance. Other ladies may “flood” and feel the urine running down their leg, for no reason at all. Either way, it’s not ok.

4. Too many ladies suffer in silence. Incontinence is a “taboo topic” with many ladies keeping it a secret from their family, friends and even from their doctor.

5. Your Pelvic Floor is a muscle that can be strengthened no matter what your age. Pelvic Floor strengthening exercises have been shown to improve symptoms in the majority of cases. St. Patrick’s Day - Lá Fhéile Padraig is a cultural and religious celebration held on the 17th March, celebrating the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

It was made an official Christian ‘Feast Day’ in the early 17th Century.

St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland.

Lenten restrictions are lifted for the day.

St Patrick’s Day is also a holiday in Northern Ireland.

Legend has it he drove the snakes out of Ireland, which is probably symbolic of driving the Pagan practices from people’s lives.

He is often pictured with a wooden staff (to represent him being a Shepherd of people) and a Shamrock, a native Irish three leafed plant which he used to explain the ‘Trinity’ (three people in one God).

Bríd’s Weight Watching Tips

Eat well to lose well To convince new members of this message can be a challenge. Most people begin the weight loss journey by cutting back on food. This sounds sensible but to cut back to extreme will undermine your efforts.

This is where going along to Weight Watchers will educate you in approaching your new eating regime correctly. It is estimated that we eat 2kg of food a day and I can tell you from experience that those who skimp on meals during the day are searching around the kitchen presses at night looking for “something” and it’s rarely broccoli!!

The message this week is to start each day well. Start the breakfast habit. It does what it says... it breaks the fast. Set yourself up for the day with a decent meal. We rarely even rate breakfast as a meal!

More thought is generally given to lunch and dinner and the first bite of the day is undervalued.

Think “quality” for breakfast. Porridge, Weetabix, if you have toast think of adding eggs or bacon medallions. In doing this you’re adding fibre/ protein. These foods will nourish your body and keep you feeling fuller for longer!

Start with the small changes to bring about big results.
