…from Page 1 This year the event takes place in Glasgow but already preparations are underway to help take these very talented dancers and their teachers to the World Championships in South Carolina, USA in 2019.

The Mc Nelis Cunningham Boyle Dance School is celebrating ten years and their successes seem to have no end. Already this year they have won the Ulster, All Scotland, Great Britain, American and All Ireland titles with the last of the preparations now underway for the World Championships.

working and talented dancers for their achievements; meanwhile the dancers praise their dedicated and passionate teachers so it seems like good team work is the key to success.

The demand is so great throughout Ulster to be part of this dance school that the teachers have branched out into counties Fermanagh and Cavan where classes are now held weekly. Johnny McCabe was born in London to Irish and Spanish parents and had a love for painting and drawing from an early age. He left home at 17 to do a fine Art degree in Belfast. Since then he has moved many times with a number of jobs eventually qualifying as a general nurse, although the pursuit of a career in art was always a constant.

For the past 12 years he has been a full time artist with a studio gallery in Donegal Craft Village. Here Johnny paints and frames his work but also has a spacious gallery area where visitors can view and buy a selection of local landscapes, figurative work and genre scenes.

The bulk of the business comes from numerous commission work where clients can order something more personal; portraits, pets, hometowns, wedding scenes even old cars have been painted.

Cooking Together across the generations

Passing down skills from generation to generation is something which has always been respected in our society and that concept is highlighted with a very novel intergenerational project at The Manor Cookery School, Clar Road, Donegal Town.

For four weeks members of Care of the Older Person and Active Retirement have come together with members of the Donegal Youth Council to exchange skills and views on cooking.

Each week different foods are cooked from fish pâté, chowder and boxty to pancakes,

Speaking to some of the members of the elder group they said that they had gained so much from mixing and interacting with the younger generation and the course has also reignited their interest in cooking.

Easy does it…

Wouldn’t it be great if the change we want to see in ourselves could be as quick as a wish! Reality however is not like that. The biggest mistake most of us make is we expect too much of ourselves. We start by attempting to make BIG changes.

We try to “fix” everything at once.

Weight gain didn’t happen overnight; weight loss won’t and indeed shouldn’t happen overnight.

A safe sustainable loss is a half pound to two pounds a week. Getting to the point where you realise this means a sensible approach is being taken. You are now willing to give it the time it needs.

Once you have accepted the time factor the next step is to decide on how to lose the pounds.

Many have tried the “do it myself” approach (including myself) and found it worked for a time but having no support it was easy to stop again.

My advice would be - do a bit of research. Find out what’s available locally and avail of the support and expertise. Go with what appeals to you. Believe it or not it’s a journey you should enjoy.

Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.

Traditionally girls who had been sent to work as domestics in estate houses went home to visit their Mother Church and their families on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

They often baked a Simnel cake to take home to their mothers. The day grew to become known as “Mothering Sunday”.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the USA in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Her campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna Jarvis wanted to honour her mother and to set aside a day to honour all mothers because she believed that they were “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world” .

While the US holiday of Mother’s Day is held in May, in Ireland it is still celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent but has lost its traditional name and is generally called Mother’s Day on this side of the Atlantic too.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before.

The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.

It’s important to have the pan quite hot when you add the beef strips, they’ll brown well, giving the stroganoff good colour and rich flavour. Serve with egg noodles and sprinkled with chopped parsley or chives.

INGREDIENTS 600 g Beef Strips 30g Butter 1 Small Onion (chopped) 250g Mushrooms (thinly sliced)

¾ cup Beef Stock 2 tbsp Tomato Paste 250ml Light Sour Cream 1 tsp Cornflour Egg Noodles To Serve

METHOD 1. Coat the beef strips in a little oil. Season with salt and pepper. Preheat a non-stick pan to moderatelyhot. Keep the heat at moderately-high.

2. Cook the beef in 3 batches. Cook the first side until the first sign of moisture appears on the uncooked side, turn and cook other side of beef strips.

Remove each batch and set it aside.

3. Add butter to the pan, add the onion and cook until soft. Add the mushrooms, cook until tender.

Add beef stock and tomato paste, stir to combine and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes.

4. Stir in the combined sour cream and cornflour.

Stir until well mixed, simmer for 1 minute.

Return beef to pan and simmer for 2 minutes.

Killian Band to march in New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Killian Band was formed 50 years ago this week. As part of the celebrations they are taking part in the New York St. Patrick’s Day parade on 17th March. They will be staying in the Roosevelt Hotel 45 East, 45th Street, from 15th to 20th March. If you are in the area they would love to see you!

As I write this we are preparing to head to New York to take part in the St Patrick's Day parade, the high point to date, for our band.

Killian NS Band was formed 50 years ago this week. It was started by Vincent O’Donnell who was the school Principal at that time. Vincent was from Ranafast and had a huge interest in culture and music. The band was very successful and won two Ulster titles and numerous competitions. But what the pupils remember most is the fun and pride they had when they were performing.

In 2015 Vincent and I met at the London St Patrick's Day parade where we were both taking part with different bands. We talked and decided at this point to reform the

Killian Band and to take part in the London St Patrick's Day parade.

In Autumn 2016 we held a meeting and there was great interest from former members and a few younger members.

We met once a week for band practice and twice a week after Christmas. The practice rekindled our friendships and love of music.

Practice times are always enjoyable and filled with laughter. Plans are discussed and we go with the unanimous decision. Going to London and taking part in the London parade in 2017 was a wonderful experience.

We had a lot of goodwill and help from our friends and family living both here at home and in London.

We were buzzing coming back from

London and many members were talking about the possibility of taking part in the New York parade.

After we settled in back home we had a meeting and decided to go for it. We will have the same number of members as we had in London - around 35.

We have a few new members and some past members are also travelling from London, Wales and Chicago to join us.

We are staying in the Roosevelt Hotel for five nights and have plenty of activities planned.

When we march down 5th Avenue on St Patrick’s Day, we intend to do ourselves and our local community proud.

The Gift of Sight Sight has long been one of the things which is most easily assisted by optical advances there are records of early spectacles going back to 1200 AD. However modern spectacles can be expensive and so are not readily accessible to many in less well off countries. Luckily the corrective properties of spectacle lenses are universal and with the correct prescription they can be re-used by different people.

Brendan McCreesh of Brady’s Opticians in Donegal Town has been working with Vision Aid Overseas to gather up used glasses locally and distribute these to children and adults in Africa in order to let them see and thus enable them to get an education or a job which they would not otherwise be able to do.
