Developments continue apace at The Mullans

Things have started to take shape at the new roundabout near BLAS Restaurant, Donegal Town. Last weekend the roundabout was open completely to traffic from all entrances, and the road off the roundabout going over to the Mullans was reopened.
The final layer of tarmacadam has yet to be laid and road markings to be put in place, but already motorists are finding the ease of traffic flow an improvement. Work on what will become the Retail Park is continuing and despite inclement weather the project

Foodland Cash and Carry was a large part of the wholesale landscape for many years supplying many shops and other businesses in the south of the county. It was owned and run by the O’Rourke family who also ran the successful and innovative Foodland Supermarket on the Diamond in Donegal Town for many years. In its time Foodland led the way with many retailing innovations later seen in national chains.

To mark the start of Seachtain na Gaeilge the first verse of the famous poem “Cill Aodáin”, often called “Anois teacht an earraigh”, is printed here. Generations of schoolchildren have learned the words of this Irish poem by the blind poet Anthony Raftery or Antoine Ó Raifteirí.

Ashtree Garden Centre Event Ashtree Garden Centre have gone all out to provide an experience for ‘little ones’ to create an original Mother’s Day gift. It’s all happening on Saturday 10th March at 2pm. The event begins with the children creating unique hand-made cards for Mum from the paper and colouring materials provided by Ashtree Garden Centre with gentle guidance and instruction coming from Emer Campbell in an atmosphere of creativity and calm.
Booking in advance before March 9th is advised. Phone 074 9722303.
This is a great idea for creative little hands and minds and a gift hand-made by a child is always precious.
With the card making completed the children can then progress to the outdoor sheltered area where they assemble their own basket of flowers, starting with pressing the compost into the basket and choosing and planting flowers from a colourful array of seasonal bedding. Again all this is completed under the watchful eye of Emer Campbell and Robert Ellis. Parents or guardians can accompany the children at all times, especially those of more tender years, but the Potting Shed tearoom is nearby where a well deserved tea or coffee with fresh baking can be purchased if a break is needed. The experience lasts from 30 - 45 minutes and costs €10 per child.

Gardening with Emer SPRING INTO MARCH With the evenings inching a little longer every day, we are quickly approaching most gardeners’ favourite time of year. There are already signs of life re-emerging in our gardens with the snowdrops in full flower and the first daffodils not far behind. Every dry bright day brings back a forgotten enthusiasm to get outside and start preparing for the gardening year. Empty pots and window-boxes can be cheered up with early flowering Narcissi, dwarf Tulips and a selection of multicoloured Primroses. Early Spring is a great time to remove weed seedlings and mulch your beds and borders. It is also a good idea to clear fallen leaves from around emerging bulbs and herbaceous perennials to improve light and air circulation and to remove a hiding place for slugs and other pests. As the gardens awaken, the Garden Centre becomes a hive of activity with weekly deliveries and monthly events. Ashtree Garden Centre’s first children’s event of the year takes place on March 10th for Mother’s Day. Further details will be published next week and will also be available on our Facebook page. Call in to us at Ashtree with any gardening queries and to browse through our great selection of Spring flowering plants.

RAILWAY HERITAGE CENTRE
“Ready to Roll” for the Tourist Season
Photo: Louise Histon
The County Donegal Railway Restoration CLG at the Railway Heritage Centre in Donegal Town have commenced a scheme of works so the centre will be ready for the summer months. The improvements include the main entrance, layout in the garden space, layout and display inside the museum, signage (on and off site) and internal displays. The centre is housed in part of the beautiful Old Station House, previously known as Donegal Town Railway Station and it commemorates the operations of the County Donegal Railways Committee which operated two narrow gauge railways in County Donegal from 1863 until 1959. This railway station serves as an important historical reminder of the County Donegal Railway, which is considered one of the most evocative of all railway lines in Ireland, and is an integral element of the built heritage of Donegal Town.

New Building for Gaelscoil
Donegal Town pupils to benefit
After 19 years in prefabricated classrooms the pupils of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí can look forward to moving in to a new modern, purpose build school in 2021. A design team was appointed by the Department of Education in late 2017 to design a new, 8 classroom facility. The new school will also host a library, general purpose hall, multipurpose room, four special education rooms as well as administration and reception areas. The children will be able to explore multiple play areas outside, including a basketball court and both junior and senior play areas. Cathal MacSuibhne, Richard Bruton TD, Minister for Education and Skills, Catherine James and Seosamh MacSuibhne at their meeting on Friday 23rd February.
Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí is a multidenominational school currently teaching 100 pupils. Rosin McCool, Principal, said “We are excited for this new chapter in our school’s development and recognise the benefits to our children of continuing their immersion education in a state of the art building.” Children can now experience Irish medium education from pre-school in the Naonraí through to junior cert in the new AVS Aonad set to open in September 2018. Seosamh MacSuibhne, Board of Management member, said “Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí is a light of hope in the celebration of diversity that occurs in the cultural and spiritual ethos of the school. This new building is a wonderful thing.”

The difference between them is
sometimes as great as a month.” - Henry Van Dyke “In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours.” - Mark Twain
1. Back pain is very common - 84% of us will experience back pain in our lives. There is no doubt it can be very painful and worrying but it is rarely dangerous and for most of us, with a little help, it will improve. 2. MRI scans can be misleading - In a study of health individuals with NO back pain, MRI results showed that 80% of 50 year olds had disk degeneration, this increases to 93% at 70. Disk degeneration is another term for “normal change over time”. If your scan shows changes it doesn’t mean your pain will last forever. In fact, the older we get the less likely we are to have back pain. 3. The spine is not fragile - Our backs are made to move and twist, bend and take load. We do not need to avoid movement to protect our backs. 4. Rest is not best - When it comes to back pain don’t take things lying down. Keep moving, as much as you feel you can, as often as you can. Exercise has been shown to reduce pain and improve function. 5. If in doubt get it checked out - If you are in any doubt about how to manage your back pain then get in touch with your healthcare professional. Ciara Mooney CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST RSA_V_0123

Bríd’s Weight Watching Tips New Year’s Resolutions! Where are they now? 8 weeks into 2018 and for most that promise they made to themselves is a memory. Why is that? Do we make it too challenging? set unrealistic goals? In my role as a Weight Watchers Coach I find most people commit to losing the extra pounds and proceed to do it in a manner that they couldn’t sustain! The “diet/deprivation” mentality sets in and this is generally the end of the weight loss resolution. Slowly but surely our mindset is changing..... There was a time weight loss was about fashion and appearance but thankfully over the past few years more and more people are approaching this journey from a health perspective. By committing instead to lifestyle changes more people are having success with weight loss. This brings about the added benefits of feeling healthier, fitter and happier in yourself. Weight Watchers introduced a new initiative in January which supports members achieve all the above. FLEX offers you a more flexible weight loss healthy eating plan and encourages you to make lifestyle changes you can live with. It’s never too late to start. Come along and join the success. Say Yes to Success!

A Good Hair Day with Fiona
Hi All, The winter can play havoc with your hair, for weeks on end it’s exposed to the elements, the harsh winter winds with their drying effect or that unexpected shower of hail or sleet. Then you spend your time outdoors in a woolly hat, flattening and taking all the life from your lustrous locks. Now that Spring is just around the corner it’s time to give your hair the treat it deserves to get it back to its full health and beauty. A special treatment of oils is always a good place to start. The nourishing and keratin laden oils bring back health and vitality to your hair giving it a smooth and glossy sheen. L’Oreal Professional is a treatment I recommend as its results are amazing on any hair type or colour.

To help bring your hair back to life after the winter season a professional cut or trim is always a good idea. Why not try out one of this season’s popular styles from the long blunt bob to the loose textured hair look now being showcased by celebrities such as Selina Gomez and Jennifer Lawson. Of course for a real lift to your hair and spirits a new colour can give both you and your hair a new lease of life. Colours for this season include tones of French browns and changing your whole look or enhancing your existing shade could be just what you need to set you up for a wonderful Spring and Summer. For helpful advice, a friendly atmosphere, flexi appointments and a great professional service call into us here at Fiona’s Hair and Beauty Studio, Castle Centre, Donegal Town, (over SPAR shop) or call us on 074 9723858

Stepping it out for a healthy childhood We often hear about the recommended 1. Walk to school each day (the return walk will increase your own steps) 10,000 steps per day adults should be getting to maintain a healthy 2. Schedule an evening nature walk lifestyle but did you know that a for the family to do together once a child’s recommended amount is in week fact higher? Girls aged between 6 and 12 years should be achieving 12,000 3. Bring a ball to the beach on a steps daily and that number is higher Sunday morning again at 15,000 for boys. We know how easy it can be to fall short of the target 4. Run races or time the kids doing laps in the back garden before so how can you make sure sitting in to do homework you and your kids are stepping it out enough 5. Play a simple game like What Time each day? is it Mr Wolf for 10 mins before dinner Here’s a few simple and fun ideas that can be 6. Get out the Wii fit and have easily adopted into family tournaments – who will your weekly routine win in your house? and remember Rome wasn’t built 7. Dig out the skipping ropes and spend time outdoors in a day – pick together practicing one or two each week and reward yourselves when you complete them. Being aware of how much activity your kids get is half the battle and taking steps to increase that is your goal.
Movement in childhood isn’t optional – it’s an essential requirement for their wellbeing. Make exercise sessions fun, enjoyable and a chance to bond as a family – it’s a win win all round!

Glenda’s “Fifty Shades of Grey”
After thirteen successful years in business Glenda Love, owner of Upper Cuts Barbers on Bridge Street, Donegal Town, recently decided it was time to do a revamp of her premises to keep up with changing trends.
‘I decided to go for grey as my theme colour’, Glenda said, ‘as grey is in vogue at the moment and seems very popular.’ Not only has “Upper Cuts” got a whole new paint job but it has all been tastefully decorated with lots of interesting pictures. The USA figures prominently with a large mural of Brooklyn Bridge. Also featured are shades of London and Paris.

A great attraction is the ‘Car Chair’ where children can get their first haircut. ‘It’s amazing how well it works,’ said Glenda, ‘as soon as the child is placed in the car chair they relax and so do their anxious parents!’
