Developments continue apace at The Mullans

Things have started to take shape at the new roundabout near BLAS Restaurant, Donegal Town.

Last weekend the roundabout was open completely to traffic from all entrances, and the road off the roundabout going over to the Mullans was reopened.

The final layer of tarmacadam has yet to be laid and road markings to be put in place, but already motorists are finding the ease of traffic flow an improvement.

Ashtree Garden Centre Event Ashtree Garden Centre have gone all out to provide an experience for ‘little ones’ to create an original Mother’s Day gift.

It’s all happening on Saturday 10th March at 2pm. The event begins with the children creating unique hand-made cards for Mum from the paper and colouring materials provided by Ashtree Garden Centre with gentle guidance and instruction coming from Emer Campbell in an atmosphere of creativity and calm.

Booking in advance before March 9th is advised. Phone 074 9722303.

This is a great idea for creative little hands and minds and a gift hand-made by a child is always precious.

With the card making completed the children can then progress to the outdoor sheltered area where they assemble their own basket of flowers, starting with pressing the compost into the basket and choosing and planting flowers from a colourful array of seasonal bedding. Again all this is completed under the watchful eye of Emer Campbell and Robert Ellis.

Parents or guardians can accompany the children at all times, especially those of more tender years, but the Potting Shed tearoom is nearby where a well deserved tea or coffee with fresh baking can be purchased if a break is needed.

The experience lasts from 30 - 45 minutes and costs €10 per child.

Gardening with Emer SPRING INTO MARCH With the evenings inching a little longer every day, we are quickly approaching most gardeners’ favourite time of year. There are already signs of life re-emerging in our gardens with the snowdrops in full flower and the first daffodils not far behind.

Every dry bright day brings back a forgotten enthusiasm to get outside and start preparing for the gardening year. Empty pots and window-boxes can be cheered up with early flowering Narcissi, dwarf Tulips and a selection of multicoloured Primroses.

Early Spring is a great time to remove weed seedlings and mulch your beds and borders. It is also a good idea to clear fallen leaves from around emerging bulbs and herbaceous perennials to improve light and air circulation and to remove a hiding place for slugs and other pests.

As the gardens awaken, the Garden Centre becomes a hive of activity with weekly deliveries and monthly events. RAILWAY HERITAGE CENTRE

“Ready to Roll” for the Tourist Season

The County Donegal Railway Restoration CLG at the Railway Heritage Centre in Donegal Town have commenced a scheme of works so the centre will be ready for the summer months. The improvements include the main entrance, layout in the garden space, layout and display inside the museum, signage (on and off site) and internal displays.

The centre is housed in part of the beautiful Old Station House, previously known as Donegal Town Railway Station and it commemorates the operations of the County Donegal Railways Committee which operated two narrow gauge railways in County Donegal from 1863 until 1959.

This railway station serves as an important historical reminder of the County Donegal Railway, which is considered one of the most evocative of all railway lines in Ireland, and is an integral element of the built heritage of Donegal Town.

Donegal Tourism provide support in terms of information and promote events at the museum.

The CDRR have made contact with the restorers of the Old Weighbridge Hut (formerly situated on the Diamond) and a plan for joint working is being developed for this summer.

WELL READ INITIATIVE Guest Speaker - Josephine O’Donnell Josephine O’Donnell is conducting a workshop with Ms Canning’s class 3A on Friday 2nd March. Josephine is a local historian and writer, she will be going through the creative process of writing a book, composing and the publishing stages.

The initiative aims to create heightened awareness about the importance of creating a culture of reading in school communities for our young people as part of their personal and academic development.

COUCH TO 5K Our runners are still training hard for the ‘Couch to 5k’! There are many mental health benefits of running as well as health benefits for our students and staff.

The programme will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school on the track. Please feel free to join regardless of your fitness level!

OPERATION TRANSFORMATION The pounds are slowly dropping off as the staff continue to battle with shifting weight as part of ‘Operation Transformation’.

New Building for Gaelscoil

Donegal Town pupils to benefit

After 19 years in prefabricated classrooms the pupils of Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí can look forward to moving in to a new modern, purpose build school in 2021.

A design team was appointed by the Department of Education in late 2017 to design a new, 8 classroom facility.

The new school will also host a library, general purpose hall, multipurpose room, four special education rooms as well as administration and reception areas. The children will be able to explore multiple play areas outside, including a basketball court and both junior and senior play areas.

Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí is a multidenominational school currently teaching 100 pupils. Rosin McCool, Principal, said “We are excited for this new chapter in our school’s development and recognise the benefits to our children of continuing their immersion education in a state of the art building.”

Children can now experience Irish medium education from pre-school in the Naonraí through to junior cert in the new AVS Aonad set to open in September 2018.

AVS Launches Aonad Gaeilge An Irish Medium Educational Initiative

The Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town, under the management of Donegal ETB is pleased to announce that from September 2018 they are establishing an Aonad Gaeilge within the school.

The Aonad Gaeilge will cater for students who wish to be educated in an Irish medium environment, instilling a love of Irish language and culture among the students.

The subjects offered in the Aonad Gaeilge will include: Gaeilge, Maths, History, Geography, Science and Religion, Physical Education, Civics, Social and Political Education.

Pupils will integrate with the wider school community for optional subjects e.g. Metalwork, Woodwork, Technical Graphics, Music and Art. English and Modern Languages will be taught through the language of the subject.

1. Back pain is very common - 84% of us will experience back pain in our lives. There is no doubt it can be very painful and worrying but it is rarely dangerous and for most of us, with a little help, it will improve.

2. MRI scans can be misleading - In a study of health individuals with NO back pain, MRI results showed that 80% of 50 year olds had disk degeneration, this increases to 93% at 70. Disk degeneration is another term for “normal change over time”. If your scan shows changes it doesn’t mean your pain will last forever. In fact, the older we get the less likely we are to have back pain.

3. The spine is not fragile - Our backs are made to move and twist, bend and take load. We do not need to avoid movement to protect our backs.

4. Rest is not best - When it comes to back pain don’t take things lying down.

Keep moving, as much as you feel you can, as often as you can. Exercise has been shown to reduce pain and improve function.

5. If in doubt get it checked out - If you are in any doubt about how to manage your back pain then get in touch with your healthcare professional.

Paul Kennedy has been passionate about photography since his teenage years.

He received his very first camera at the age of 16 and even though many years have gone by since, he still remembers the excitement of developing his first photos. His passion then became his profession after achieving his degree in Art and Design, majoring in Photography. His talent for creating photographic memories to promotional videos of diverse events from weddings, landscapes to car competitions and sports wear, has taken him to many countries such as England, France, Luxembourg and Switzerland and as far afield as Bali in Indonesia. In the past few years, he has worked with companies such as Mimram Media, Key Finance, ProTime Fitness, Fallout Factory and Prodrift Academy through which he has gained recognition and been featured on websites and in winning photo competitions.

Now that Paul has moved back to his hometown of Donegal from London, he intends to promote tourism through stunning landscape photography along with promotional videos for small to large businesses.
